This time on IBAITN, we come close to actually doing a bit of serious journalism as we review the recent BBC documentary 'Loaded: Lads, Mags and Mayhem'. Join us as we reflect on the documentary before discussing our own thoughts on lad culture, how we experienced it at the time, and what we believe are the component parts of the archetypal 'lad'.
'Loaded: Lads, Mags and Mayhem' is a fascinating documentary that we highly recommend all 90s enthusiasts watch, although Stu did need to be talked into watching it after being told it contained 'upsetting scenes'. At the time of episode release, you can watch it on BBC iPlayer here:https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002389y/loaded-lads-mags-and-mayhem

Christmas is just around the corner and we need to compile our Christmas lists. What better place to look for inspiration than the trusty Argos catalogue? Stu and Alex take a different catalogue each and pick some choice selections to share. Rather than relying solely on the audio descriptions, we really recommend you read the catalogues along with the episode so you can find Alex's 1991 catalogue HERE and Stu's 1999 one HERE.
Tune in to find out what item Alex considers to be the physical representation of 12 year old Stu, which item Alex still owns to this day, and what sporting item gets Stu searching on eBay live on air.

Here at IBAITN HQ, Geoff is still refusing to pay for satellite TV in the office. It's something to do with the lodge's subscription to the fishing channel needing to take preference, apparently. Anyway, this sorry situation has at least prompted us to take a look at the last great terrestrial TV landmark of the 90s, as we investigate the genesis and launch of Channel 5 in March 1997.
Tune in to find out which former England rugby union captain Alex is personally linked with, which newsreader appears to have disappeared off the face of the earth, and which Channel 5 presenter scolded a crying student live on TV after they had opened their exam results (we think)?

Against all odds, IBAITN has been renewed for a third season. Alex and Stu are back with brand new content, but the same old problems...
To kick off the new year, it's Alex's turn to try and convince Stu that he was wasting his time as a CITV kid, and that he should have nailed his flag to the CBBC mast throughout the decade. It can't all be fun and games when it comes to nostalgia podcasting, you know. On some occasions, your fearless hosts must take it upon themselves to investigate the darker side of their chosen subject matter. But never fear, because in keeping with the spirit of the podcast, this time on IBAITN we apply a suitably light touch to some of the more notable criminal acts of the 90s.

Sometimes on IBAITN the stars really do align, and that's exactly what has happened here. We're delighted to be joined by none other than Peter Lawlor, the man responsible for one of the most recognisable rock songs of the 90s, and a UK number 1 at that - Inside by Stiltskin.

IBAITN hasn't got to where it is today by jumping on any passing nostalgia bandwagons. We've always ploughed our own furrow, gone our own way and done our own thing. So it definitely isn't as a result of the success of their recent smash hit Netflix documentary series that we turn our attentions this time to the life and times of David and Victoria Beckham in the 90s. And joining us to discuss the celebrity couple of the decade is returning legend of the pod, Kate Pro! Come with us as we ruminate on how the Beckhams shaped our own lives in the fields of football, music and fashion, plus there's an in-depth examination of David's links with Chippenham!

We're caught between downcast and celebratory moods this time on the pod as we finally come to terms with the sad demise of Children's ITV. As he was always the CITV kid compared to the CBBC partisan Alex, Stu decides to take us all on a run through of an average CITV afternoon schedule in the mid-90s (Wednesday 12th July 1995 to be specific) in an attempt to convince Alex that CITV really was as good as, if not better than, CBBC. So tune in to find out which cartoon seemed so scary that Stu never even watched it, which theme tune crops up in Alex's brain every 48 hours and which programme both Alex and Stu consider an underrated gem.

It's the 2nd of our year-by-year look at the computer games of the 90s, and we've decided to go for 1998 this time. As usual, we each choose 3 of our favourite games from the year, as well as some honourable mentions, and listener choices of course.

It's time to take another look at a random chart from the 90s on IBAITN, and on this occasion the fates have deposited us at the 20th February 1999. Who better to help us review this fine chart from the end of the decade than one of our regular correspondents and fellow 90s nostalgia nerd, Neil from Channel NEM! Join us as we explore our personal stories around the songs by R&B legends, cartoons, Canadian teen rock bands, and autotuned divas which made up the 40. We're back from our short summer break and we've finally fulfilled Stu's long-held wish and done an episode on goalkeeping in the 90s. We're delighted to welcome as a guest Steve Hale - current goalkeeping coach of Crawley Town and previous coach at numerous Football League clubs, and a handy player in his day, not to mention the owner of Steve Hale Goalkeeping School & GK gloves. In our chat with Steve we discuss our favourite 'keepers from the decade, the stand-out saves, the kits (of course) and how the discipline differs now from back then. Yes, it may sound niche, but trust us, you don't want to drop the ball on this one.

We have a new entry this week - coming in at number 63 in the Wessex-based nostalgia podcasts charts, it's It'll Be Alright in the 90s! That's right, we're talking about the pop charts this week. We've decided to pick a random week from the decade and have a long, hard look at the UK top 40 chart of that week. We've ended up in October 1997 and it surely is a mixed bag. As we're talking about pop music we of course called upon our resident pop expert, Joe Barter, who brings his unrivaled pop wisdom to the pod table. We all give our candid opinions on what's hot and not, and then end by picking our favourites from the chart. Many of our listeners have been wondering when IBAITN is finally going to go highbrow. Well friends, the time is now, as a clause has been inserted into our renewal contract which states that we must at least make a passable attempt to do so (thanks for that Geoff). With that in mind, please join us as we take a look back at some our favourite books of the decade!
As usual we have each selected three weighty tomes to discuss, with some wildcards in the back pocket. Come with us as we pay tribute to the books which introduced the lads to reading as children, which rock legend wrote Alex's favourite ever memoir, and which book Stu withdrew from his local library on so many occasions that they eventually let him keep it.

Unbelievably we've been renewed for a second series! So we're back by little to no demand and we're carrying on right where we left off - knee deep in nostalgia. To start the new season we're taking our next foray into the films of the decade and it's the turn of 1992 to come under the microscope.
As with our two previous film episodes we run down the box office top 10 of the year, then get dolled-up for the awards season results, before each choosing 3 personal favourites to discuss. Plus we choose an extra wildcard to give a mention to. Join us to find out which film Stu watched because he wanted to be cool like Jon Amor, which film satisfies Alex's craving for slow-motion waterfall jumps, and which impression Stu will sadly never be able to perform on the pod. After a short and desperate plea for more listeners in 2023, the lads delve into the myriad of notable events surrounding 31st December 1999. Along the way we revisit Alex's dad's attempt to cash in on the Millennium Bug (alongside his attempt to deal with some inner city car crime), and Stu's struggles with a holiday homework project as well as an underwhelming school trip to the Millennium Dome. Along the way, we re-discover forgotten technology for both the kitchen and the lounge, mourn the loss of the novelty lighter, and get wistful about the rucksacks we used to wear to school. We end by randomly choosing a gift from each other's catalogues to take home, which turns out well for Alex, and not so well for Stu...
Also: Let your fingers do the walking! A Halloween apology! Win a small Peugeot! The world's most horrifying doll! And much much more...

Fingers on buzzers... first question: Which 90s nostalgia podcast has just released a new episode on 90s game shows? Correct, it's us! Join Stu and Alex as they choose some of their personal standouts from the game shows of the decade - from the absurd to the frenetic to the comforting, we cover some real greats. Give it a listen to find out which comedy moment Stu and his dad have been reciting for 20+ years, which gameshow-based after-school club Alex joined in year 7, which show had to resort to giving out mugs as prizes, and experience some on-the-fly gonzo podcasting as Alex encourages Stu to finally watch a bit of wince-inducing footage he had been avoiding for years!

Grab your chamois leathers and your nodding dog toys, and join us this week as your hosts Stubaru Justy and Alex Romeo 164 discuss the cars they would like to place in their dream 90s garage. Along the way we find out which legendary estate car Alex has nominated as his daily driver, which hot hatch Stu wants to relive his younger driving days with, and which supercars they would own simply on the strength of their childhood toy memories. Also of course, there's some chat around the cars the boys would not grant access to the garage, including one of the fastest road cars ever made, alongside one of the slowest. Plus all your brilliant correspondence on the subject, which dramatically sees Daewoo draw level with Ferrari in the nominations!

BOO! Sorry to startle you but we have a very exciting episode for you this time because it’s our first ever collaboration podcast! We’ve teamed up with the Most Millennial Podcast from the the other side of the Atlantic to bring you a special 2-parter. And before you ask, yes, this IS the first Wessex-Colorado collaboration in history, podcast or otherwise.
As we’ve teamed up with a podcast across the pond, and it’s the end of October, what better topic to cover than Halloween? We've decided to split the episode into two parts. We're hosting the first part on our feed, which is what you have here, and then the Most Millennial Podcast will be hosting the second part on their feed - links below. In our half of the double-header we discuss our personal recollections of Halloween, including Stu's family Vauxhall falling foul of an unfortunate trick, Alex choking on now-defunct Italian sweets and Reed's genuine fear of trick or treaters in the Coloradan mountains. We also debate how important it is in the UK vs. the USA, before reading out your brilliant correspondence.
Also: Halloween candy! Terrifying animal noises! Adrian Chiles confusion! and much, much more!

We're continuing our year-by-year deep(ish) dive of the films of the decade. We've done 1990 so you'll not be surprised to hear we're moving on to 1991. We start with a breakdown of the year's box office and award winners before Stu and Alex each select 3 personal highlights from the year. Stu does his best to avoid the infamous ire of Addams Family die-hard fans and does a very brief impression of Arnie, while Alex makes a bold claim about Alan Rickman, and is scandalised by one of the Golden Raspberry award winners. And needless to say, we read out all your great correspondence.

It's football's big 3-0 on the podcast this week as we celebrate the impending 30th anniversary of the inception of the Premier League with our special guest Rob from the excellent Premiership Years on Twitter! We look at the classified results from both the first and last game weeks of the decade, and consider such greatly missed phenomena as half-finished stadia, extremely low attendances and the usage of boot laces on shirts. We also take a look at some of the gimmicks Sky attempted to employ in order to sell their 'whole new ball game' to supporters up and down the country, and there's plenty of quizzes and trivia along the way too, as we come to the inevitable conclusion that football was just better in the nineties.

And what were our personal favourite presents? Stu and Alex also exchange gifts, run through a recap of the ledger and give out some annual awards, in possibly the least glamorous and under-attended awards ceremony since the last Golden Globes.

IBAITN is getting serious (relatively speaking) in this episode, as we take a stroll down the corridors of power for a look at British politics in the 90s.
We discuss a few key talking points of the decade in politics, from personal recollections from Stu's school days ('fence-building diplomacy' anyone?) to more general thoughts on how popular culture and the media dealt with the goings-on at Westminster and out in the constituencies.

IBAITN is going for a trip down Hooky Street this time as comedian, comic artist and official barber of the pod Wil Hodgson returns to join us for a deep dive into the 90s era of Britain's favourite sitcom, Only Fools and Horses!
We look at its transition from the pure comedy of the 80s to a 'sitcom soap' hybrid of the 90s, as well as running down our personal favourite moments from this period of the show. We also tackle the thorny issue of whether or not the show should have returned in 2001 after it had been ended so perfectly in 1996 (spoiler - we all agree it shouldn't have), and find out how Boycie himself, John Challis, almost officiated at Wil's wedding!

Snap the clapperboard down because we're ready to yell ACTION on our new series of episodes exploring the films of the decade, one year at a time. Unsurprisingly we're starting with 1990. We have a look at the big award winners and the box office top 10 before choosing some our personal favourites from the year. It really was a terrific year for nostalgic films! Find out which unloved sequels Stu thinks deserve an afternoon of your time, which non-human actors does Alex think can out-act Jared Leto, and which film do they both agree contains some too often overlooked child neglect. Also, lots of your brilliant correspondence!

We have yet another fantastic guest for you this time on IBAITN, as Grammy award winning drummer Rob Brian drops in to talk us through his version of events from the 1990s!
Rob takes us on his journey throughout the decade from teenage M&S warehouse man to established touring drummer and teacher, and along the way he picks out his favourite car (easy), TV show (not so easy), movie (difficult) and record (impossible) from the decade for us amongst his many other cultural highlights of the time. Watch out for a forthcoming return episode for Rob on his other passion apart from music - the world of sci-fi!

It's the second half of our music video marathon as returning guest Joe Barter rejoins the boys to conclude their look at their favourite examples of the art form from the decade. Come with us as we find out which National Lottery machine Madonna insisted on sharing the stage with in 1998, which video almost causes Stu to lose his hosting job in favour of Joe (yet again), and which banned video we find it difficult to get to the end of, even though we can only find a heavily censored version. Although, all things considered, that's probably for the best,

Paint your face, put on your replica shirt and jump on the cup final bandwagon, because on the podcast this time we're talking non-league football as we speak to legendary Chippenham Town centre half and captain Lee Burns about the team's run to Wembley Stadium and the FA Vase final during the 1999/2000 season!
Burnsy takes us behind the scenes on that famous cup run, as we find out what it's really like to lead a team out at the home of English football in a showpiece final. Among many other fascinating stories from the time, he tells us why he almost got left behind by the team coach in Manchester, how he avoided injury and suspension (just) in the run up to the final, and which song he entertained a packed function room with after the game. We highly recommend checking out the following videos as a companion piece to this episode, which feature many of the people and incidents discussed:

It's a new year and we're returning to finish what we started - it's the second part of Stu and Alex's cult 90s football squads and we've moved into the attacking positions. Is Stu better value on the pod when he's had too much supermarket own brand cough mixture? And a new 90s inspired Christmas drink is invented, plus all your correspondence and much more.

This time on IBAITN we're casting our minds back to the glory days of 90s football and thinking up our own starting elevens of cult 90s footballers. As this was clearly going to be a mammoth task, we've split our elevens in half and will be revealing our goalies and defenders in this episode. Have a listen and discover which forgotten giants of the English leagues Stu thinks deserve more credit, and which uber-cool hardmen from the continent Alex has recalled. Who won the World Cup with Brazil at USA 1994 before a career swansong in the San Marino league? Who led their club's sole, and often forgotten, season in the Premier League? Which player could all 90s football video game players recognise from only a single green pixel? Tune in to find out! Keep an eye open for our midfielders and strikers at some point in the new year.

Then it's onto the live music, and amongst other things we find out what happened when KISS set their outdoor pyros off at an indoor gig, what you probably shouldn't do at a stadium show when you find yourself needing to change from jeans to shorts, and how, at the age of eleven, Stu's prized possession became a size XL Toploader t-shirt.
