Well it’s Judge James’s birthday – today, November 25th, and he has some questions. Not “Where do babies come from?” or “Why, god, why?” but “How does one navigate publishing their own RPG?” So in the spirit of James becoming older, we had some friends over to celebrate and help guide us and others, on the foolish journey of creating an RPG!

The smell of woodfire… the crackle of leaves….. The flash of ghostly presences out of the corner of your eye… the sound of Peter Frampton coming alive (wait… wrong podcast.) It’s almost Halloween! We’ve survived another year, another Game Hole Con, and tonight we bring you a bloodcurdling guest from the world of DCC Dark Fantasy…. An esteemed publisher, writer and youtuber, Mr. Nick Baran (even more terrifying, he also runs a merch booth at many conventions!) Welcome Judge Nick!

Hi-tech RPG campaigns take the fantastically magical and turn it into applied science. Tonight’s show is all space, computers, laser guns. The only swords we’ll be talking about are of the vibro variety. We’re going to dive into high tech games like MCC RPG and the various DCC 3rd party publications that bring sci-fi settings to the table in this month’s episode of Spellburn!

We’ve been talking about it for years, we’ve been doing it for months, and now it’s time for a deep dive on Organized Play in DCC RPG! But not with just anyone. No more, “But how does it work?” or “What is that, anyway?” We went to the man himself, the Slime-Lord, the judge who’s run 1000 Insane Worlds, the expert on deep space turtles, the provider of Blades against Bandwidth– yes, of course it’s X-Crawl Classics’s DJ LaBoss himself, Judge Brendan. ALL THIS, and we’re going to talk in the tavern, prep for GENCON (and Summer Knights Con), and much much more on this month’s Spellburn.

And we’ll talk with Dak about ye olden days, plans for Crawl, GENCON, visit the email crypts and then– as if this wasn’t enough– we’re going to go deeper– and reminisce some more with some very special pizza-flavored guests– Joey Royale & Tim Deschene! DCC’s been a gold standard of oldschool gaming for 10 years! There’s a ton of great content out there, from Goodman Games, from 3rd party publishers, free internet resources like Purple Sorcerer, and even (GUGHGHGBLLEAH) social media. But what about people who make it happen behind the scenes? Every adventure is full of good writing and art, but needs an editor and (really, really) needs a playtester or 20! Tonight we talk to some of our favorites (and Judge Jen!) Plus other gossip and malingering and a visit to the Email crypt! All this and more on this month’s Spellburn!

The Great Visp Hunt (DCC Dying Earth adventure)
DCC Dying Earth: it’s every bit as beautiful and faithful to the source material as we’d hoped, but…is it as daunting as the core book? Since DCC fans have come to Spellburn for the low-down on rules for the past decade, we’ll discuss some of the chewier Dying Earth rules with Judge Will Keller, one of the Demo Night judges who cut his teeth on them. We’ll also talk about some of the more entertaining pieces in the new setting with members of the Dying Earth writing team — and we may have a couple tidbits to share from the highly-anticipated Vance Manse trip!

So we were on hiatus for about a year… or a little more and a lot has happened between our last non-Twitch episode and our triumphant return in the holiday special! One thing I was most excited about was to talk about third party DCC & MCC stuff with some of the greatest creators in the field. So tonight I’m trying to make up for lost time with longtime MCC/DCC guys + podcast alums Forrest Aguirre & Jarredd Crader… plus some of the wackiest and most wonderful third party guys out there, Dan Steeby and David Coppolettti. Plus… a real zombie will read some old un-dead emails from the prior era of Spellburn!

Tonight we’ll be Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG has a vibrant community supporting the game through innumerable 3rd party products, including adventures, settings, and many, many zines. Where do all these zines come from anyway? Why are they here? What are they doing to us? Why would I make a zine instead of a full fledged game or setting book? How can I do this zine thing? To kickstart or not to kickstart? We’ll talk zines on this episode of Spellburn with Chris Willett, author of Aeon, Ancient Greece, as well as tackle some emails and whatever other controversies come our way!

Hubris, noun: excessive pride or self-confidence that leads a person to disregard the divinely-fixed limits on human action in an order of chaos.
While defying the gods is no longer viewed as a crime, as it was in ancient Greece, it is regarded as a tragic flaw in the human psyche. That said, if you’ve read anything on the Land of Hubris, World of Visceral Adventure, you’re not surprised that it spawns from the DCC community. It may be hubristic of us, but we’re pretty proud of this episode.

It’s impossible to keep up with all the great stuff being put out for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG! It seems like every day has a new barrage of kickstarters, Goodman Games announcements and hot rumors. But what the heck, I figured we might review some of our favorite projects and get the word out, since the abundance of content for DCC is something that makes our community great!

Spellburn is here again with a first-time guest Marzio Muscadere, author of Steel and Fury, Death Slaves of Eternity and the winner of the 2017 Rodneys Design Award, Star Wound of Abaddon! We’re going to waste copious points of Stamina, Strength and Agility as we hang out with Marzio, learn exactly how to pronounce his name and start the countdown to DCC #100.

Lankhmar is huge! Thousands of people dwell within the eleven quarters that make up the City of Sevenscore Thousand Smokes. Anyone new to town is bound to run into some issues. Were you meeting with that fence to offload some newfound treasures tonight at the corner of Carter Street and Cash Street? …or was that Carter and Crafts Street? Or was it that alleyway just off the corner, between those abandoned shops? On the other side of the table — judges, the party may be looking for a place to lay low for a few weeks after barely escaping some dicey carousing results, but you don’t have any locales in mind from the modules you’ve gone over thus far.
Fear not! We’ve imported “Keeper” Bob Brinkman from the Sanctum Secorum podcast to show us how easy it is to give your players what they (and you) need. While working on the Lankhmar setting, he ran the campaign playtest almost entirely as a sandbox, and gave the community the resulting fully fleshed-out neighborhood. He’s here today to go over the last of the 3 source books in the Lankhmar boxed set with us, and we’re going to start a neighborhood map together!

Sometimes you come back from the con and instead of pulling all the stops out to do that interesting and informative episode on Clerics, or the birthmarks of djinnis or the ecology of the space-wombat or whatever, you just want to talk about the Con and maybe sneak some relevant content in there… like in this case!

Alright everyone. Today is an important day in the history of Spellburn. We are finally going to address the elephant in the room. The Cleric Class. You might be saying to yourself “But Jeff. Spellburn already covered the Cleric class. You know, back with the original line-up. Back when the show was still good.” And to that, I would respond first with “How dare you?” and second with “Yeah, true. But they didn’t discuss the real problem at hand, which is that WE DON’T NEED CLERICS, WE JUST NEED TO GIVE WIZARDS HEALING MAGIC!

Howdy Pardners! If you’re already a fan of Dungeon Crawl Classics, you have been bombarded with Kickstarter after Kickstarter for DCC products – and that’s just in the first 5 months of 2019! The best part, for our community, is that the majority of these projects have been put out — successfully, I might add — by a whole posse of third-party publishers! We wish we could’ve herded all the polecats and promoted EACH of them, but the stars have finally aligned so we can share one of these with you before its completion! Let’s see how that cat jumps!

For generations, it has been whispered of in the back-alleys of Punjar… for untold aeons, a secret on the lips of Sezrekan, shared only with the most devoted of his servants… its power unlocking hidden ways of the Gods, new pacts with mind-bending Patrons, precious artifacts of startling puissance and, perhaps most sanity-stretching of all .. the hirsute glory of THE MUSTACHE… yes.. “You’re no hero,” the DCC RPG rulebook iconically says. “You’re an adventurer: a reaver, a cutpurse, a heathen-slayer, a tight-lipped warlock guarding long-dead secrets.” While our characters may be seeking gold and glory caked in the blood and filth of the weak, as players, it can be extra fun and satisfying doing it all for a good reason. Whether you’re buying raffle tickets at Drinking & Dragons, pledging support to Extra Life campaigns, raising money for charities through Lawful Good Gaming, helping David Baity raise money for kitties in need, or helping support the hard work Jon Marr does for us all in his annual campaign, raising money for good causes while gaming is a long-standing DCC tradition…

Consistency:
“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. — ‘Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.’ — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

Like many listening, I first encountered the mysterious world of Aéreth in the pages of the DCC RPG Core Book. Many others listening will remember the world of Aéreth from back in the days when Dungeon Crawl Classics wasn’t the name of a roleplaying game but was instead the name of a line of adventure modules written for the world’s first fantasy roleplaying game.
Today we are lucky enough to have the man who quite literally wrote the book on the topic of Aéreth back in those days of yore. He’s here to talk to us about the system’s default setting and how it has changed since DCC RPG was launched.

Page 10 of the DCC Core Book asks us to pledge, with our right hand upon our little brown books, that we shall uphold the honor of the hobby of role playing to all comers, whether young or old. In this episode we discuss what it means to uphold the honor of the hobby to all comers and whether or not that only applies to those of different ages. Should we make an effort to make our gaming table and the game itself more open and inclusive to those of all walks of life: regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexuality, etc.
Some of you listening may be saying “Well duh, of course,” and some of you may be saying “Oh great, now Spellburn is gonna get all preachy with their SJW nonsense”. Wherever you fall on that spectrum, we hope you’ll listen and join in on the conversation on social media afterwards!

What IS Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG? Is it just a beautifully made OSR game with superior standards of art and more prodigious production of random tables? Or is it MORE than a retroclone, and if so, how does it differ from the games that hue closer to the traditional elements of the world’s most popular roleplaying game (older edition)? When we talk about OSR Games or retroclones, WHAT’S fundamentally new and different about DCC? How is it that DCC is perhaps one of the most different RPGs of the OSR, and yet is constantly said to rekindle the original spirit and nostalgia of so many oldschoolers?

This week on Spellburn we take a look at how to create a supernatural Patron! Patrons are one of the coolest and most unique aspects of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. This week our episode is on the Appendix H… H for horror films! Horror films have been inspiring fantasy roleplaying from its inception. It is widely believed that the Cleric class’s main inspiration was Peter Cushing as Dr. Van Helsing in the 1950s and 60s Hammer Horror films, and that the Magic Missile spell came from the 1963 movie “The Raven” with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff. Today we will focus on content creation and share ideas we have from some of our favorite horror films for how you can spice up your game! Judge Michael Bolam joins us for another Horror classic!

This week on Spellburn we’re celebrating a very special occasion! Saturday, June 17 marks the 5th FREE RPG DAY since the release of the Dungeon Crawl Classics Roleplaying Game! The heavens shook and the abyss trembled and the masters of reality feared for their grip on the aether! Since then, thousands of adventurers since have fought, lived and died (mostly died) for glory and gold, as we learned to imagine the the wizard, the fighting man, the cleric, even the halfling in a whole new way! How do you celebrate such an auspicious occasion? By summoning the great immortal Dark Master himself, of course!

This week on Spellburn we discuss some of the many third-party classes available for DCC RPG. When you deviate from the core book, you can find all manner of strange, exciting, and bizarre classes. Some of them emulate classes from the various editions of the world’s most popular fantasy roleplaying game, others are templates for futuristic or modern day settings, and some are just plain gonzo. We’ll be discussing this and more in our 51st episode of Spellburn!

This week on Spellburn, we’ll dive into a hot topic: How to win over the uninitiated to the game of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG! We’ve all been there before– trying to sell DCC to oldschool grognards, or devotees of newschool games. We’ll discuss how to prepare a game for newbies, whether at a convention or a FLGS. And we’ll talk about resources to find new players, as well as the differences between DCC and other systems and how to handle some common questions or perceptions. This week on Spellburn, we’re going somewhere totally different. Over the last 45 episodes, we’ve talked about many different aspects of the games: The classes, the magic system, the mighty deeds, the monsters, and more. In this episode, we’re going to talk about how people actually use the rules and specifically how people abuse the rules: What players do to twist and break the game and what Judges might do to respond to those tactics! And we’ll do it with an eye on con games as well as long term campaigns.

This week on Spellburn, we’re taking a deep, dark look at the world of DEMONS. Sure they’ve been around since the days of AD&D, although they apparently got a little too hot for some game companies in the late 80s. But they’ve always been a part of Appendix N and nothing could be more old-school than featuring them in your Dungeon Crawl Classics game. We’ll talk about how to use them as bad guys, Patrons and NPCs, the spells that bind them and even thoughts about running campaigns on their home turf– in the Abyss.

VOID LICHThe Void Lich is a decrepit-looking humanoid completely encloaked in a shaggy coat of fur. The tufts just barely obfuscate deadly rows of quills lurking along its arms and torso. Even more disturbing, its body is pocked by large holes, nearly fist-shaped, within which moving swirls of an interplanar palette of blue can be seen.
Void Lich: Init +2; Atk barbed quill +4 melee (1d6+2 and grappled, then impaled) or dimensional claw +5 melee (1d8, special); AC 13; HD 8d12+8; MV 20’; Act 2d20; SP damage reduction 5, spellcasting (+7 spell check), grappled targets must make DC 14 Strength check to escape, impaled victims must make DC 15 Reflex save to disengage from quill barbs, vulnerable to fire, interdimensional claw attacks (see below), un-dead traits; SV Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +6; AL C.
The Void Lich’s preferred attack is to grab opponents and impale them repeatedly with its razor-sharp, barbed quills. The fist-sized craters marring the Void Lich’s shaggy coat are connected to a pocket dimension. A hideous, ravenous abomination dwells within the demiplane. When the Void Lich is in melee combat, blue-tinted finned tendrils and skeletal ten-fingered claws quickly stab their prey. Roll 1d6 each round of attack: (1-3) abomination makes two claw attacks (may exceed normal Act dice); (4-5) tendril wraps around target’s limb and victim is held, DC 15 Strength check to escape; (6) a claw tries to grab a random item and drag it back into the pocket dimension.
This week on Spellburn your hardy hosts delve into the treasure vaults to uncover every adventurer’s favorite loot: magic items! We’re going to dive deep into the rules for potions, scrolls, magic staffs, magic swords, rods, wands, and more…

The judges, Jim, Jobe, and Jeffrey, have journeyed to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to attend Gary Con 6. We’re still busy running and playing games, but we wanted to share some of the awesome with our listeners. On Friday morning, we recorded the “What’s happening at Goodman Games” seminar. No spoilers, but you don’t want to miss this one. We’ll return in April with our regular programming.
The biggest selling points of the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG aren’t just its old school vibe, easy-to-learn mechanics, and gonzo play style – it’s the art, which visually embodies all of these qualities in spades. Tonight, we’re privileged to talk with one of the primary architects of the visuals for the DCC RPG world and the voice of DCC himself, Doug Kovacs.

It’s our end-of-the-year wrap up episode of Spellburn, and we’re glad that you’ve all come along for the ride with us. We couldn’t have done it without an active audience out there downloading and listening to this podcast, as well as contributing your feedback, emails, and show suggestions. This episode we talk about our favorite DCC RPG adventures, game moments, and authors of 2013 – and we preview what’s coming up on Spellburn in 2014!
“Enter freely, and of your own will…”
This week on Spellburn, we have a special guest for just in time for “Fangsgiving.” Our summon patron spell went awry and opened a portal to an alternate universe… a new world of gods and monsters! This week on Spellburn we drift a little from our talk purely about Dungeon Crawl Classics and branch into topics about OSR gaming in general. First up is a look at how players and judges react to a system where everything is not codified. DCC RPG gives the game back to the judges and throws off the shackles of “rules heavy” games. What does this mean for players and judges of the game?

This week on Spellburn we continue our basic survey of characters classes with the thief class. Not the rogue, not the reprovisioner, not the specialist… the thief! Welcome to our greatest episode yet! Tonight we’re going to take a look at one of the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG’s defining game mechanics. When two wizards meet in a world where magic is wild, dangerous, and often barely understood by mere mortals, chaos quickly ensues. Two wizards go in, and only one wizard walks back out. Somebody’s going down. That’s right, with the help of very special guests Goodman Games writers Harley Stroh and Michael Curtis, we’re talking about the Spell Duel.

This week on Spellburn, we’re continuing our series of up-close-and-personal looks at individual character classes. Tonight, by popular listener request, we’re going to cover the cleric class, which in Dungeon Crawl Classics, is NOT your father’s d20 heal-bot. Second only to fighters and dwarves in raw melee power, this divine class casts spells without armor penalty, turns creatures of opposing alignment, and just generally kicks unholy ass.

This week on Spellburn, we invited a bonafide Dungeon Crawl Classics neophyte to the show to share his reviews, rants, and reservations about our favorite system. You know we love this game – we’re doing a podcast about it – but what about everyone’s favorite grumpy grognard from two of our sister podcasts, Save or Die! and THAC0’s Hammer? By special arrangement with Wild Games Productions and Mrs. Hallstrom, join our judges in welcoming our special guest for this episode, Glamorous Glen Hallstrom! Glen will share his new-to-the-sytem reviews, rants, and raves, as well as take a short trip through the character funnel live on-the-air.
Also – we announce the winner of the “Name That Stroh” contest!

If you listened to this week’s episode of Spellburn then you already learned that Joseph Goodman’s nickname is “The Dark Master”. Alas, poor Harley Stroh, Goodman Games’ most prolific writer, lamented on air that he has no pet name. He has thrown himself upon the mercy of our listeners to give him one. So we’re running a contest to “Name That Stroh!”
1.) Post a comment on this page with a spiffy new moniker for Harley between 7/31/2013 and 8/6/2013. Make sure to post with your own name or handle. If you need some inspiration, we posted the friendliest picture we could find of Harley above.
2.) The triumvirate of Spellburn judges will whittle the entries down to the top 5 finalists.
3.) The winner will be determined DCC-style – with a Zocchi die roll – live on episode 8 of Spellburn.
The winner gets bragging rights and more. Harley will wear a shirt at Gencon 2013 emblazoned with the new sobriquet, and will quite possibly never live down the appellation.
Welcome to our best episode yet, with genial game writer and gentleman grognard Harley Stroh. Harley has written over 40 adventures for Goodman Games, including the some of the most infamous, like Sailors on the Starless Sea, Blades Against Death, and Colossus Arise! Join us as Harley discusses his passions and projects, and shares some tips and tricks for aspiring game designers and Judges.

This week on Spellburn we’re jumping straight to the front of the marching order to spotlight warriors and dwarves. In the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, these two fighter classes aren’t your typical hack-and-slash, one-trick war-ponies. Between Mighty Deeds of Arms and improved critical hit ranges, there’s just the right amount of skull-crushing style to make these two character classes entertaining to play level after level.

This week on Spellburn we take a look at wizard magic! Described by some as a set of rules that out-Vancian the Vancian Magic System, we’ll take you through the entire system with some live-play examples. From spellchecks to mercurial magic effects to spell corruption to patrons, we’ll find out what happens to those who dare dabble in the dangerous and wildly unpredictable arcane arts in the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG.

This week our party’s wizard burned his Strength, Agility, and Stamina down to 1 to max out his Invoke Patron check and ended up rolling a natural 20. A portal opened to the Plane of Looming Deadlines and out stepped out the indefatigable Michael Curtis. Michael is the author of several DCC RPG adventures and a contributing writer for the DCC RPG core rulebook.
