More people than ever are appreciating the importance of plants in our day to day lives. Whether it’s a plant-based diet, clothes made from plants, the wellbeing qualities of plants, or simply a fun shelf of cacti and succulents!
The Plant Based Podcast is about anything that can be traced back to plants… with subjects ranging from foraging for medicinal plants and baking with edible flowers, to plant-based body builders and clothes made from bamboo…
This is not just another gardening podcast.. this is The Plant Based Podcast!
The podcast The Plant Based Podcast is created by Michael Perry & Ellen Mary. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Plants don’t always follow the expected rules or genders, and it’s not a big deal for them, yet why is it for us? Connor Butler gives us some some truths about everything LGBTQ+ in the botanical world…and it’s fascinating!
Afterwards @ellenmarygardening and @mr_plantgeek have a new years gossip while driving to Heathrow about travel and of course plants, amongst other random things.
Sponsors of series 17 are Lava-Lite - Naturally The Best
Effortlessly nourish and protect your plants with a collection of totally non-toxic, environmentally friendly, sustainable, pH neutral, lightweight and 100% natural products.
Derived from volcanic deposits, LAVA-LITE was formed by nature over 10,000 years ago.
The collection is made up of eight different horticultural growing/potting media and pest control products, with each continually offering the same natural benefits: thermal protection, moisture retention and control, soil conditioning and providing a nutrient boost; as well as being completely child, pet and environmentally safe.
LAVA-LITE is chemically inert, zero-harm and does not kill pests. It acts as a natural barrier and deterrent, providing an opportunity for them to simply move on.
All the products can be used anywhere in the home and garden without worry and any predators eating prey that have come in to contact with LAVA-LITE will not be harmed, keeping eco-systems balanced, maintained and sustainable.
The LAVA-LITE collection is available in handy 1 litre and 3 litre resealable pouches. They are easy to use, provide great results and don’t require careful handling, making them perfect for the novice gardener and specialist grower.

Kate is a wildlife writer who manages to attract an astounding number of wildlife species into her urban Brighton back garden. She has written for numerous publications over the years, and also features on BBC Gardeners World and is an RHS Ambassador.

What first began as a growing mountain of landfill, that could be seen from Matthew Mead’s classroom, has since transformed into a passion to change the construction industry. Matthew Mead, founder and CEO of Hempitecture, sits down with Michael and Ellen - all the way from Sun Valley, Idaho - to discuss how plants have created the next best building materials.
In part one, he talks about how Hempitecture came about and shares some staggering statistics surrounding building material waste, and how this spurred him to make a change. He also talks through Hempitecture’s plant-based alternatives to traditional materials - such as fibre glass – including Hempwool and Hempcrete and the benefits of each. He also urges us to think about the fact that many of the traditional materials we surround ourselves with can’t be touched without having to wear protection. With Hempitecture, however, even the kids can help install it!
In part two, Matthew surprises us by revealing some of the buildings in the UK that were built using both Hempwool and Hempcrete. He also shares how he made his head board out of Hempwool, and also shares some of the funny requests he’s had about what Hempwool can be used to make – a Hempwool blanket anyone?
We’re then joined by the fabulous Daisy Desire, also known on Instagram as @dragqueen_gardener on Instagram as her alter ego Gardener Tom. Joey and Katy also share a delicious recipe for making the most of summer harvests, and Forage and Folkore give us the latest foraging tips!

In this episode, Chris Packham describes the informal but deliberate planting scheme in his garden, a haven for wildlife. His garden has no lawn and wildflowers flourish, despite Sid and Nancy’s attempts to destroy the lavender patch!
Chris gives listeners his top tips for attracting pollinators and birds to gardens and lets us into the secret to keeping birds in the garden year-round and setting them up to survive the winter.
Ellen asks Chris whether he is a fellow tree hugger and Chris describes what trees can teach us about how to behave in our time and space. They discuss HS2 and the ways it will impact ancient woodlands and the importance of protecting the ancient woodland we have left.
They talk about diets and how we should consider the foods that we eat and the impact food production has on the environment. Chris speaks about becoming a vegan, for ethical and environmental reasons. They round off the episode with the ultimate question – ‘what is your favourite plant?’.

He combines kids’ entertainment and education together at his shows which he tours round schools and festival - all while sporting his glittery jacket! Over lockdown, he released his book ‘How to get kids gardening’ and has been inundated with messages from people who have discovered the endless perks of getting kids out in the garden.
They discuss how lockdown has helped families reconnect with plants and the best ways to grow edible plants at home – in the garden, on the patio or on a windowsill. Lee explains how to set up mini allotments with washing up bowls and how to use buckets to make frog ponds. There’s even a special appearance from the true star of Skinny Jean Gardening, Lees’ daughter, Olive!

Every wondered what a Plant Geek’s plant collection is like?! This episode of The Plant Based Podcast kicks off with Michael showing Ellen around his new home, giving a tour of his extensive houseplant collection. They then interview Greg Bourke, the Curator and Manager of the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Australia.
Greg started his working life as an electrician but has worked in horticulture and conservation at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden for nine years now. Greg explains why the Blue Mountains are blue, and they talk about the incredible variety of plants at the Botanic Garden, including peonies the size of Greg’s head, even in winter. Greg describes what it was like at the garden during the wildfires, when they saw 70 metre flames and they opened the garden as a refuge for local residents.
In part two, Greg tells Ellen and Michael about his lifelong fascination with carnivorous plants and jokes that he loves them more than his family! He has a phenomenal potted collection of over 10,000 plants, 90% of which are carnivorous.
Greg shares his passion for getting kids into conservation through introducing them to edible and carnivorous plants that they find captivating. They round off the episode with Greg’s three easy tips for listeners who want to grow carnivorous plants at home.

RHS Wisley is loved by gardeners worldwide and is visited by 1.2 million people each year. The gardens are diverse with different planting and gardening styles at every turn. With a huge plant collection and over 100 years of gardening history, it has something for everyone and there’s something different to see every time to visit. No mean feat for Matthew to be in charge of!

In 240 acres of stunning, ever-changing gardens how can you pick a favourite area? For Matthew its easy. The conifers – a plant that Matthew thinks is misunderstood and gets a bad press. Plants AND food – what could be a better combo?
allplants unites both of these and brings them together in delicious, easy and convenient plant-based meals that can be delivered frozen to your door.
In this mouth-watering episode of The Plant Based Podcast, Michael and Ellen meet Alex Petrides, one of the founders of allplants, and Joey O'Hare, the senior development chef who is responsible for creating all the tasty recipes for allplants’ meals.
In just three years, allplants has grown from two brothers delivering its meals using London buses for transport to having a team of 100 people making 5000 meals a day. It’s a true testament to the popularity of plant based lifestyles and demonstrates that more and more people are recognising the virtues of a vegan diet!
Alex and Joey reveal how allplants meals are so much more than ready meals. Firstly, they are far more nutritious. They are handmade, chef prepared meals that aren’t mass produced and packed with salt. They are created by a team of experts who spend a long time developing the flavours and dishes to make sure they are delicious in their own right, and not just as a vegan alternative.
In the episode, they discuss their favourite meals from the range, their plans for making plant based meals even more convenient in the future, as well as revealing what they think to meat substitutes entering the market.

Natural Grower is an incredible liquid fertiliser – made by plants for plants. So it makes them the perfect partner for the Plant Based Podcast!
Charlotte, one of the founders of the company, discusses how Natural Grower all started on a family farm in Leicestershire. The farm was once a dairy unit before diversifying into arable crops. As part of their renewable revolution, Charlotte and her husband Richard invested in an anaerobic digester that is fed with maize grown on the farm. A by-product from the digestor is a nutrient-rich organic fertiliser with seriously impressive results – and so Natural Grower was born!
After using the fertiliser on their crops, they saw the amazing results first-hand so the next step was sharing it with the public and getting it out to gardeners.
The product is approved by the Vegan Society and in the episode Charlotte runs through the process of getting that approval and the requirements that the product and process has to meet. As it is made from plants it avoids any residual chemicals that may be found in compost or manure, so is an amazing fertiliser for veganic gardens!
Later in the episode, we hear from fans of the podcast who have sent in their organic and veganic gardening tips so tune in to pick up some handy pointers!

*Virtual Chelsea Special episode*
This extra-special episode of the Plant Based Podcast delves behind the scenes of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and features Sue Biggs, Director General of the RHS, and Jill Otway, who is the Plant Committee Manager.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic means that, along with so many other events, all RHS shows this summer have sadly been cancelled. Most notably the Chelsea Flower Show, which had to be cancelled for the first time since the Second World War.
Sue discusses the weight of the responsibility of having to make the decision of cancelling the show, despite know the impact it will have on the horticultural world. She reveals that it’s the hardest thing she’s had to do in her time at the RHS, but that the interests of public safety had, of course, to come first.
Excitingly, the show must go on! Soon after the cancellation, the RHS announced that Virtual Chelsea would take place instead. In the subsequent eight weeks, teams across the RHS have united and worked around the clock to arrange a fantastic line up. We’ll be able to nosey around gardens of big horticultural names and celebrities, as well as watching Q&As and how-to videos from growers, designers and nurseries.
It all starts on Monday 18th May 2020 where the online content will be available exclusively to RHS members - just like the first day of the real show is.
In the second half of the episode, Michael chats with Jill Otway, who is responsible for organising the incredible Plant of the Year awards at Chelsea. Winning Plant of the Year can have a huge impact on a plant’s sales, so it is a highly coveted title. Jill explains the rigorous process for how all the new plants at the show are whittled down to just one deemed worthy of the title, as well as revealing exactly what the judges are looking for.
They look back at previous winners and how this year, for the first time, the RHS will be celebrating the Plant of the Decade! You can cast your vote and pick your favourite winner from the past ten shows at the RHS website. Jill had always planned for Plant of the Decade to take place this year, and for it be voted for by the public so it lent itself perfectly to the new online format.

“Plants are a great equaliser. A geranium is a geranium, no matter where in the world you are, or what you are experiencing”
Lalage Snow is an award-winning freelance photojournalist, writer and filmmaker who has experienced life in some of the most hostile and war-torn places on the planet. Her book, “War Gardens” explores gardens tended to by those caught up in conflict around the world and shows how gardening can bring peace in times of conflict and in the most extreme places.
Lalage, Michael and Ellen chat about how gardening takes you out of the present, puts you in the future and gives you a sense of hope – quite fitting for an episode recorded during the coronavirus pandemic.
In her book, Lalage uses photography and the domesticity of a garden setting to divert from the horrors of a war zone. She believes that gardening can provide common ground in isolation. In this powerful episode of The Plant Based Podcast, she discusses how people garden in different ways, for different reasons, across different conflicts. She explains how in Ukraine people garden for self-sufficiency out of necessity, with imports from China and Russia being cut off and supermarkets shutting; how in Gaza urban density means gardening brings peace and a sense of returning to what previous generations did; and how in Afghanistan having to garden is second nature.

Gardeners’ World presenter and gardening writer, Mark Lane, meets Michael and Ellen to discuss how he got into gardening, and how it all started with a career in medical and architectural publishing. His love of gardening was sparked by his architectural work and learning how outside landscaping relates to building and design.
Life changed for Mark following a car crash in 2001 which means he is now a wheelchair user. Throughout his rehabilitation, Mark studied garden design and went on to be the UK’s first garden designer in a wheelchair, as well as the first BBC gardening presenter in a wheelchair.
As well as dishing the dirt on what goes on behind the scenes at Gardeners’ World, he reveals how he overcomes issues around accessibility in gardening. He talks about tools he’s discovered that make it easier to garden from his wheelchair, as well as inventions he’s fashioned himself.

The second half of the podcast is all about spiky plants - Agave and the relatively new Mangave which is tipped to be the musthave plant of 2020. Mangave is a hybrid of Agave and Manfreda, and Paul is propagating lots of them! In a special bonus episode, Ellen and Michael have been to the Hampton Court Flower Show. Like the true plantspeople they are, they spent most of the time in the floral marquee, marvelling at how many retro plants seem to be back on trend. From previously disdained Heathers to mumsy Chrysanthemums, the tide has changed. New breeding, new innovation, and new attitudes mean that lots of plants are being re-invigorated for new and old gardeners alike.
We speak to Andy’s Airplants, Chrysanthemums Direct, Ottershaw Cacti, The Hebe Society, Calamazag Nursery and Forest Edge Nursery.
Plus, we also had a chat with Hayley‘s Lottie Haven (a gardening Instagram luvvie!) who is much younger than Ellen and Michael, and gives an interesting viewpoint. She has largely been gardening without judgment, although she did raise a few eyebrows on the allotment..
Lastly, we find out what happens to all of those plants when the flower show closes. We chat to Wayward Plants about their fantastic plant recycling scheme, filling community gardens with colour and wildlife across the UK.
