I’m Ryan, and I have Autism. From the Spectrum is a podcast about Autism. I am on a mission to explain a likely cause of Autism. Autism suddenly shows up in human evolution, and it seems to be a biological adaption (neuroplasticity) to an environmental change used by living organisms for life- light. Maybe, people fail to understand how living organisms use the energy from light to drive biochemistry. In addition, I want to explain Autism. I use various scientific literature, personal experiences, and opinion. With opinion, I will explain why I feel the way I do, and give examples. I will provide links to various references for each episode. For each episode, we will discuss various aspects of Autism.
Lastly, thank you for listening to From the Spectrum podcast.

The biology that gives us Autism allows us to be comfortable within ourselves.
Our biology orients the Autistic towards our internal state. This is more comfortable for the Autistic in comparison to the outside world. In this episode, we cover brain regions, networks, and internal calculators. All humans use these biological calculators. However, based on the living organisms unique structure of brain regions and networks (connections), it is easy to understand why people are different.

Understanding the roles of Thyroid with Autism & Parkinson's, and what is the missing link.
Research misses the link. Do not rely on research to connect these conditions and point to the real cause. Both, Autism and Parkinson's, have two major factors, 1) clocked timing and 2) A loss of, or a lack of, energy.
Two Questions are asked:
1) What do you think Neuromelanin is?
2) What do you think Light is?

Consider how the autistic phenotype might be judged. We spend more time in educational settings, but our interactions extend beyond these environments. Humans are social creatures, and we need to understand what individuals are trying to accomplish, especially in social settings. These two phenotypes show significant differences.
A Year in Review from previous episodes.
00:00 - Intro
00:42 - Warning Against Comparing Rates; why comparing autism rates across different time periods is misleading due to changes in diagnostic criteria and definitions.
02:07 - Historical Context; the Bayh-Dole Act, DSM acceptance of Autism, and changes in vaccination schedules, affecting Autism definitions; Core Autism Characteristics
04:30 - Educational Challenges; Describes the typical school day's structure as potentially overwhelming for Autistic individuals due to frequent subject changes.
05:36 - Intense Focus; Autistic individuals might fixate on topics with abnormal intensity or focus, which is a hallmark of Autism.
08:40 - The biology of Autism allows us to be comfortable within ourselves; contrasting with societal expectations.
09:09 - Employment and Anxiety; Considers how the expectation to fit into social norms can lead to anxiety and challenges in employment for Autistic individuals.
10:10 - ADHD and Autism; Challenges the notion of coexisting ADHD and Autism,
14:26 - Early Detection; UCLA study on very young children showing altered salience network connectivity, hinting at early signs of Autism.
14:49 - Developmental Timing; emphasizes that Autism likely starts in the womb, suggesting prenatal development as a critical area for research.
15:14 - Neurodevelopmental Perspective; Autism as underdeveloped or abnormally developed cells, linking it to broader neurodevelopmental disorders.
16:03 - Comorbid Conditions: Explores the concept of Autism being associated with various other conditions due to shared developmental issues.
16:47 - Biological Processes: cellular proliferation, differentiation, and migration in the womb, crucial for brain development.
17:41 - Mitochondria and Autism
18:30 - Oxytocin & Autism; oxytocin as a molecule of interest, particularly its pathways and their implications for social behavior in Autism.

In this episode, we discuss some difficulties with eye contact for the Autistic phenotype. Sensory processing and the rate of information comes fast, and this provides additional energy for an already challenging and exhaustive task. Humans are constantly extracting physical phenomena from the environment (sensations) and we process this information to inform our nervous systems (perceptions). Specifically in this episode, we discuss the differences between listening and speaking.

In this brief episode, we discuss keeping up in the classroom during teacher lecture. Specifically, we discuss the delays in sensory processing, taking notes, visual thinking, and some challenges with keeping up. This is a pressing issue for Autistics, and in my opinion, education needs to do better for the Autistic phenotype.

For today's episode, we go back to the origins of Autism. It seems necessary because of the recent shifts in what is Autism and the confusion in the rates of Autism. Autism was here in the 1930's, and it magically showed up in different areas of the world. The two-part series intends to remember the phenotypes that appeared and became known as Autism and Asperger's.
It is my opinion, the recent shifts in defining Autism could be rooted in questionable intentions. Regardless, one goal of the podcast is understanding and explaining Autism. By the end of the episode, and by the end of the two-part series, I hope you gain understanding of the Autistic Phenotype.
If the children described by Asperger in Autistic Psychopathy in Childhood were alive today, they would receive a smorgasbord of diagnosis.

Relationships are challenging.
In this episode, we explore some of the Autistic phenotype challenges in relationships. We discuss symptoms from criteria A are external and criteria B are internal, and how criteria B complicates the symptoms in criteria A. In addition, Autism is a comparison to social-norms, and this is a problem. Some environments/relationships discussed include peer-to-peer, romantic, and parent-child. To begin, we explain the mechanisms behind the speaker-receiver and the use of conveying speech in socialness.
Before we begin, we cover a brief explanation of Speaker-Receiver and human communication.

In this episode, we discuss Autism and the Default Mode Network. According to Lisa Feldman-Barrett, the Default Mode Network has many names because it has been discovered, named, rediscovered, and renamed many times. I do not disagree with the Science regarding Autism and the Default Mode Network. However, I disagree with the Interpretation of the Data. This IS our Default; our preferred state; the core of the Autistic Phenotype.
After listening to this episode and understanding B.3, you can understand MOST of Autism. The only reason you cannot understand ALL of Autism from these two episodes is the amount of Phenotypes branching off of B.3 and our Default Mode. Autism IS preference for ALONENESS and SAMENESS. This minimizes sensations and distractions that interfere with our internal world. This state is NOT abnormal, how society interferes with it makes it abnormal.
If you want more Autistics to ACHIEVE, then understand your interaction, interference, and interpretation of what YOU think Autism is, and that delta determines how much we are prevented in life. This, of course, becomes slightly different the more profound the Autistic Phenotype is with that specific person.
In this episode, we will explore the different brain regions and the goals of these regions as it relates to our phenotypes. We will get into some "Thinking in Picture" and thinking styles. This will be a good time because of a future guest on From the Spectrum Podcast discussing Autism and Creativity. This is exciting for me.

In this episode, we discuss eye-tracking as an early biomarker for Autism. Eye-tracking, on infants, improve assessment outcomes at young ages, as young as 14-months-old. Adding biomarkers to the assessment process is valuable, and Autism research is beginning to offer more biomarkers. We've covered biomarkers in cellular respiration, serotonin, two studies on 6-week-olds- 1) predicted profound Autism with brain cortical organoids and 2) salience network connectivity. Today, we review four scientific papers on eye-tracking being added to the assessment process.
A valuable consideration is the roles our eyes have on brain development, which we cover as well.

In this episode, we discuss the mitochondria. You know mitochondria as the "powerhouse" of the cell, but this biological process is biophysics meeting biochemistry. We discuss glycolysis, the TCA cycle (or Citric Acid cycle or Krebs cycle), and Oxidative Phosphorylation. This discussion goes deep inside the atomic molecular level with electrons and protons. Hang in there with the discussion and topic of Autism and understanding of the generational link to a loss of electrons.

In this episode, we challenge the modern trend of Autism and ADHD comorbid diagnosis. We will use children from Kanner and Asperger to show these so-called ADHD symptoms are simply parts of the Autistic Phenotype. However, society finds it easier to lump these two conditions together, and we question why. We review both, the inattentive criteria and the hyperactivity and impulsivity of ADHD and explain when the Autistic phenotype exhibit these conditions.
The criteria for ADHD are downstream behaviors seen across multiple reasons and act as a collect-all. I did not say ADHD does not exist, but I do say Autism and ADHD existing simultaneously seems unlikely if you really understand the phenotypes. Might it just be easier for society to lump these together instead of challenging the differences?
B.3 and Inattention are complete opposites. Hyperactivity and Impulsivity can show up when anyone is in the wrong or horrible environment.

My guest today is Jonathan Mitchell. Jonathan is a senior citizen Autistic, Author of numerous novels and blogs, and stands up for the purpose of Autism. His blog, Autism Gadfly, provides perspectives of Autism otherwise not considered by the lay-public or researchers in Autism. Jonathan's views have been mentioned in Newsweek, NPR, Autism Daily Newscast, and HuffPost.
Jonathan was born in 1955 in Los Angeles. We discuss his experience at an early age including psychoanalytic therapy, psychological assessment, and troubles through education. Eventually, Jonathan and his family learned about Autism while on a trip to the East. Jonathan faced many challenges through his education in different schools beginning in kindergarten. However, Jonathan graduated from UCLA with a bachelors of arts in psychology.
We also discuss challenges in professional and personal life as an adult where he faced various barriers. In the early 2000s, when the internet allowed for different communication platforms, Jonathan began to call out things wrong in Autism. In addition, he carries a loud voice for a cure/treatment for Autism. Recently, you can find him on X as he continues to be a voice for the Autistic community.

In this episode, we explore typical topics with Autism research and try to understand the purpose. Autism research is confounding, and maybe, lacks direction. We offer a research suggestion based on the most plausible cause of Autism- the new modern day environmental factor- Artificial Light. Remember, Autism just shows up, so it makes sense to send the mother and father back to an environment pre-Autism.

In this episode, we explore some critical dates and understanding of Autism. We will time travel from 1911 to 2024 with a goal of understanding why the sharp increase in Autism diagnosis of late. We review the closeness of schizophrenia and the separation from schizophrenia. In addition, we will review Autism becoming a separate diagnosis in the DSMs from the 1980s and review the closeness of Vaccines and Assessment Standardization that parallels this time. Hopefully, some consideration about the rates of Autism are presented.

Please consider 1) Critical Thinking and 2) Curiosity as we travel upstream in the biological implications causing Autism. In addition, we will explore other common health conditions related to Light. These health conditions are dementia, type 1 diabetes, obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
The episode will discuss light as an electromagnetic strip and how our biology uses this energy. We discuss the embryo, neuroectoderm (brain and skin), proteins being wide-band gap semiconductors, photoelectric effect, cytochromes and mitochondria, chromophores, and related topics.
"... I realized that all biochemistry is the bridesmaid to physics. I then realized that physics are how the business of cells gets completed. Light is the biophysical levers that control substrate level biochemistry in cells." - Dr. Jack Kruse

We expand on a critical network discussed in the Autism and Adaptive Responses episode. The biology that gives us Autism, gives us a condition the outside world is chaotic. The trade off is our inner world is comfortable. See criteria B.3.
The Salience Network is used to determine what we send our attention to as we orient ourselves with the outside world. You can see this in Autism versus Non-Autism. Autistics orient to single objects or single interests more than multiple objects or interests. That's Criteria B of Autism- Restricted, Repetitive Interests, Behaviors, or Activities.
In Autism, the Salience Network connects to different regions compared to Non-Autism, and this is shown at Six-Weeks-Old. And, this implicates our Social Attention and Social Motivation. Remember Hans Aspergers called the children "little professors" because Autism provides a path of Superpowers based on those fixated interests that are "abnormal in intensity or focus."
Covered Here. Also, we prepare for another discussion with a leading scientist from UCLA.

In this episode, we discuss biology of anxiety, responses from anxiety, and common situations causing anxiety with Autism. The stress response system of the body is very finite and the nervous system reflexively responds based on what it knows. A few biological components of anxiety include the amygdala, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), and the spine. Common responses to anxiety include avoidance, shifts in physiology, and valance, or how we feel about the situation. To end, we have a lengthy discussion on some common sources of anxiety.

In this episode, we discuss Autism and Education. We explore some current condition within education and some personal experiences. Specifically, the school day is in complete conflict with Autism- both Criteria A and B. This is the primary factor with the challenges of Autism in Education. The classroom requires a Social Dynamic, a Speech and Language Dynamic, and Sensory-Processing Dynamic, which is 3 strikes against Autism. In addition, the subject switching throughout the school day complicates our path of learning- Our learning style prefers spending extended times on a single subject. Autism gives us the ability to be comfortable within ourselves and this accelerates our learning, our Superpowers. School and the world mostly requires the social communication and interaction.

There is no question Mothers that have children with Autism are incredible. You are loved and appreciated.
Criteria B is Autism. Hans Aspergers called the children with the syndrome "little professors." This is Autism. Our routines and fixated interests. Autism gives us the ability to be comfortable within ourselves, and this accelerates our abilities, our Superpowers. How will society handle these so-called "differences" and the conflict within the so-called "normal" people?

In Part 2 of the Excitation and Inhibition phenomena, we discuss Metabolic "bank" account and demands of navigating the social world. We discuss if we have enough resources or if we will run a metabolic deficits (think burnout and avoidance, and social isolation). We cover NMDA and AMPA and different Autistic Phenotypes. In addition, we review Neuromodulators, which are vast in our biology and determine how and where to direct our attention and energy. Lastly, we discuss the medial Prefrontal Cortex and how it integrates the "self" with the outside world.
Don't try to change an Autistic person because they are different than you or different than others. Don't let that offend your beliefs and capacity to apply critical thinking in life.

In this episode, we discuss the Excitation and Inhibition Phenomena in Autism. There are many biological aspects implicating the E/I balance, and the Nervous System needs a healthy balance. This episode extends slightly downstream of the Genetic and Protein implications previously discussed. We discuss cortical and subcortical areas, sensations, introduce Glutamate and GABA, and discuss the critical period. The critical period is, pardon the pun, a critical period for Autism. In addition, we discuss BDNF and introduce neuroplasticity. Finally, we discuss Melanin and Melanopsin and sunlight and modern light, and the vast implications from our new environment. To end, we connect many modern diseases to these biological factors.

This episode is all about preparing for a future episode about Excitation and Inhibition imbalance- a known phenomena with Autism. I play Tug-of-War with Barbed-Wire and talk about a critical factor of our environment implicating proteins and development- This is huge, and necessary.
