To tell the story of this once very famous haunted house seems like it should be simple, oh, but it’s not. In fact, there’s nothing simple about this story at all. But I’m not going to tell you what to believe. I get it – every story gets started for a reason, even if that reason is greed. But believe it or not, there is much about this story that has the potential to be the truth. What part of it? I guess we’ll see...

John’s life took an abrupt turn in September 1964 when he met and subsequently married a co-worker named Marlynn Myers, whose parents owned a number of Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Iowa. John’s new father-in-law offered him a position with the company and soon the newlyweds were moving to Waterloo, Iowa. Life seemed to hold great promise for the newlyweds with no foreshadowing of what was to come.

Carmel was a safe place, everyone thought so – well, until the middle 1990s, when the town was rocked to its core by the discovery of a mass burial ground at the home of a prominent local businessman.
It was only later that everyone learned the truth and Herb’s sinister side was revealed – along with the scores of bodies that were buried beneath the earth of Fox Hollow Farm.

If you ever happen to find yourself driving down West Linden Street in Boise, Idaho, you might notice the house that sits at number 805. Covered in a layer of dirt, boarded up, windows broken, and trash scattered all over the yard, the large, two-story Craftsman-style home looks like an abandoned set for a horror film – but in this case, the true story is much more terrifying than fiction.

There is no single residence in America that seems to fit the description of HAUNTED HOUSE better than the Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California. And if there is a house that has a richer history, a more mysterious reputation, and a greater reputation for its connections to the spirit world, I can’t think of it.

On November 29, 1895, the very first professional athlete in America history to receive a death sentence was executed for the murders- a bloody act that had shocked the Illinois town where he lived. The murders and the hanging that followed two months later left a black mark on the city’s history – and they also left two separate hauntings behind.

On the hot New York City afternoon of June 26, 1897, a handful of boys were swimming in the East River just south of an abandoned dock at the foot of East Eleventh Street. The boys soon noticed a package floating nearby. In the package were two human arms attached to a man’s torso.
So much for a fun afternoon….

Violet Grimm knew something was wrong when Ruthie, her tenant, came to the door. She looked tired, and she seemed preoccupied and nervous. She was hoping that Violet’s husband, Howard, could help her with some luggage. H.J. Mapes was the baggageman on the train that night. He’d been with the Southern Pacific Railroad for 23 years and had managed thousands of bags, so he knew right away that something was wrong with the large steamer trunk that had been loaded in Phoenix. He noticed a strange smell and then when he looked closer, he was sure that it was leaking blood.

As Peal handed the rice around the table, Douglas reached for the bowl, but Pearl quickly moved it out of his reach. “You’ve got enough on your plate,” she told the little boy. She pushed it past him and placed it in front of her stepdaughter, Leona. She knew that rice was one of the little girl’s favorite foods.
“There you are, dear,” Pearl smiled widely at the girl. “Please help yourself....”

For decades, stories circulated about the “most haunted house in America.” And the whispers told of bizarre murders, gruesome deaths, human experimentation, and visits to the house inspired not only horror stories but even a great inventor’s fascination with death and the afterworld. If any home in the country deserved the moniker of America’s most haunted house, it was this one. However, only some of what you have heard is true...

The average person probably doesn’t know the name of too many architects. It’s not usually something that easily comes to mind, unless you’re an architecture or history buff, but there is one name that most will recognize – Frank Lloyd Wright.
On August 15, 1914, one home became a scene of horror when a grisly murder spree claimed the lives of Wright’s mistress, two of her children, and four others who worked at the estate.

In August 1928, a woman from a tiny town in Missouri was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder. As you might imagine, the arrest of a 56-year-old woman with a reputation as a nurse and healer in the community where she’d lived wasn’t your run-of-the-mill news story in the late 1920s. It was a shocking event to people who lived in nearby St. Louis, but those from Franklin County, where the woman lived weren’t as surprised.

There are stories, rumors, tall tales, and whispers that tell very different stories about the fate of Red Hamilton, John Dillinger's right-hand man for many a heist. There is speculation about where he died, when he actually died, and whether his ghost – or at least the ghost of the man buried in that grave – still haunts a house where someone breathed his last.

It was June 6, 1980, in the normally quiet suburb of Libertyville, Illinois. Located in the heart of Lake County, it was one of the most affluent communities surrounding Chicago. The residents of Libertyville weren’t accustomed to violent crime – those kinds of things don’t happen here, they’d often say. Until they do.

The smell was overwhelming on that July day in 1968 as Monnie Bliss approached the cabin that his father Chauncey had built years earlier near the community of Good Hart, on the Lower Peninsula of Michigan’s Northwest Coast. And the murders that ended up being discovered in the strange cabin in the woods would be a mystery that has yet to solved.

January in Chicago was always brutal. The winter of 1946 was no different. Three murders with one kidnapping in the same area. Were they all the work of one killer? Or was an "innocent" man put away for life while a more brutal killer was still on the loose, living amongst us...?

There’s a house just outside the town of Ocklawaha, Florida, that stands as one of the most infamous locations in America’s gangland history. It was at this house where the last stand of the Barker gang took place and where Ma Barker and her son, Fred, battled it out with G-men before being shot to death. The violent and blood-soaked battle occurred many decades ago but there are many who believe it’s not quite over for the spirits that still linger behind these walls.

There was nothing unusual about that Easter Sunday in 1975.
“How’s your Volkswagen, Jimmie?” Leonard asked him.
James didn’t speak. He answered the question by shooting his brother, setting off a spiral of violence and rage that ended as the deadliest shooting spree to ever occur in a private home in America’s bloody history.
One that left a grim and troubling haunting behind.

On a windy hill near the small Southern Illinois town of Equality is a decaying mansion that was known for decades as the region’s most haunted house. It was a place dubbed Hickory Hill by its builder and over the years, it’s been many things – a plantation house, farmhouse, a tourist attraction, and many believe, a chamber of horrors for men and women brought to this house in chains. Thanks to the long-standing legend of the terrible things that occurred in the house, locals eventually began referring to it as “The Old Slave House.”

Hidden away in the deep, dark woods of the Chattahoochee National Forest was once an isolated mansion that was the object of terror to most of the people who lived in the small town of Summerville, Georgia.
A terror that lingers to this day.
It was on the chilly night of December 12 that year that a secluded house became a place of torture and bloodshed.
The name of the house – Corpsewood Manor – seems like something right out of a horror novel, but on that dark night, the terror was unbelievably real.

The Myrtles Plantation, located in the small town of Saint Francisville, Louisiana holds the rather dubious record of hosting more ghostly phenomena than just about any other house in the country. But what could be more dubious than the honor itself?
Well, that would be the questionable history that's long been presented to explain why the house is so haunted in the first place.
Known for decades as one of the most haunted houses in America, the Myrtles attracts an almost endless stream of visitors each year, many of whom come searching for ghosts -- and there seems to be little doubt that the house is haunted. It's the reason for the haunting that's been called into question. For several generations, tales have been told that are blatantly false. However, the Myrtles, according to hundreds of people who've encountered the resident spirits, is indeed haunted, just not for the reasons we've been told.
A simple check of historical records reveals the true story, which you're just about to hear. As is often the case, the true story is not as sensational as the story everyone, including myself, grew up with. But it's still strange and macabre. The history of the plantation is filled with death, tragedy, and despair, which leads us to wonder why the fanciful history was created in the first place.

But as an end of the year "thank you" for all the great feedback, story ideas, texts, emails, and support that we’ve gotten from you this season, we wanted to offer you one last story.
We’ll warn you though – this isn’t your typical missing person story. This one has a bit of a twist, which is why I wanted to save it to the very end.

It was on June 6 of that year when two Missouri teenagers and one of their mothers vanished without a trace after a graduation ceremony and have never been seen again. There was no valid reason for the three of them to disappear. They weren’t running from anything or looking for a new life. They’d just celebrated the event of a lifetime and had everything to live for.
So, where did the three of them go? And why have they never been found? We don’t know. The shocking and tragic events of graduation night have created a haunting mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

On March 24, 1998, a young woman named Amy Lynn Bradley vanished from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship while it was on its way to Curacao. Cruises seem to be an escape from reality, but crime happens on board, too. Most reported crimes are, unfortunately, sexual assaults but other things can happen, just like anywhere when you put that many people into one confined space.

When the Jamison family of Eufala, Oklahoma, vanished in October 2009, it got the attention of the entire country. They seemingly disappeared without a trace one night, which was strange enough, but the story that led up to their disappearance was outright bizarre.

Much has changed at the Mineral Springs since it opened more than a century ago, but if you stand in the lobby – when the lighting is just right – you almost expect to see guests in old-fashioned clothing as they hurry past on their way to a mineral cure or to have a cocktail in the hotel bar.
And if the stories are true – they still do.

Every town has a story like the one you just heard. Some places, like Alton, have more than one. Most people dismiss stories like that as nothing more than folklore – a tale to be told around the campfire – but I can’t help but wonder how some of these stories got started in the first place...

“The call is coming from inside the house.”
That’s the line that always gets us – it’s a line from one of the most popular urban legends of all time. But what if I told you that’s not just an urban legend? And what if I told you that it’s based on a real story about a murdered babysitter in 1950? A murder that’s never been solved?
This is the story of Evelyn Hartley.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, Alton was actually the largest town in the state of Illinois. The town was billed as the “most desirable place to live on the east side of the Mississippi River,” St. Louis began to be referred to – much to the dismay of its political and business leaders – as “the little town downriver from Alton.” There are three industries in the area linked to ghostly tales from Alton’s past. We’re going to explore two of them today.

In the summer of 1951, Beverly Potts was just 10 years old. When the Showagon came through Cleveland, Ohio in August 1951, she was ecstatic to go there alone and her mother reluctantly agreed- as long as she was home before dark. Beverly assured her that she’d be careful. That became the last promise that she ever made to her mother.

In 1833, construction was completed on the first penitentiary in Illinois. Located in the riverfront town of Alton, there was no other building like it in the state – and only two others anywhere in the United States. The Alton Penitentiary was – and still is – a very haunted place, and it’s one from which there is really no escape – not even in death.

In 1923, Barbara began her most extensive project yet – a complete novel. Finally, in 1926 – after many drafts and a house fire that destroyed one of them – she finished the book. Ruth was last seen on the night of May 4 by some of her Tri-Delta sorority sisters shortly before 11:00 PM. She had just returned to her dorm, Austin Hall, after choir practice and changed into her pajamas. She had her hair in curlers and seemed like her ordinary, happy self. The other girls would later recall that she didn’t seem to be under any kind of strain or stress...but she was never seen again.

Everett financed his wanderings by selling prints and paintings, but he never stayed in the same place for long. He once wrote, “There is always an undercurrent of restlessness and wild longing. The wind is in my hair, there is a fire in my heels, and I shall always be a rover, I know.”
According to everything that exists, Everett continued to roam the southwest until the age of 20, when he disappeared for good...

In the early 1900s, Ambrose Bierce was one of the most famous writers in America. He was odd, unusual, eccentric, and often disagreeable, but critics loved his gritty stories of war and adventure. He became one of the most acclaimed writers of the period, although his literary career turned out to be tragically short. Why? Well, you see, Ambrose Bierce, like those literary characters he created, vanished one day without a trace, and his disappearance has never been solved.

On August 23, 1912, a four-year-old boy named Bobby Dunbar vanished while on a fishing trip to Swayze Lake in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. When Mrs. Lessie Dunbar realized that her son was gone, she contacted the police, who began a massive search for the boy.
Eight months passed before the family’s hopes for Bobby’s return were finally realized —– or at least that’s how it seemed. But no part of this story would turn out to be simple. The boy who returned home was NOT Bobby Dunbar.

A newspaper in 1910 wrote about Dorothy:
"She disappeared from one of the busiest streets on earth, at the sunniest hours of a brilliant afternoon, with thousands within sight and reach, men and women who knew her on every side, and officers of the law thickly strewn in her path."
Such a young woman simply does not just disappear. And yet she did. Because no matter how perfect Dorothy seemed, not everything was as it appeared.

In 1874, just nine years after President Lincoln was slain, the nation was again shocked by a terrible event. It was not the death of a great leader but the disappearance of a previously unknown four-year-old name Charles Brewster Ross. “Little Charlie Ross” – as Americans would soon know him – was stolen away in what became the first kidnapping for ransom in the history of the United States.

It was at the Sandman where the man in the green pajamas was staying when he came to Jacksonville. Of course, that wasn’t his name. It was Bruce Campbell, and he was a stockbroker from Massachusetts. He came here to visit his son, who was then a professor at MacMurray College in town. Bruce’s first grandchild had just been born and it was meant to be a happy visit for the family.
But it turned out to be a tragic one.

Season seven of the American Hauntings Podcast, "GONE", will include stories of mysterious and impossible disappearances that we found in the archives to be the most intriguing, compelling, and downright chilling.
If all these people vanished so easily from the face of the earth, then it means that it could happen to anyone – perhaps even you.
Because, as you’ll learn this season, a disappearance doesn’t have to be possible in order for it to occur. In fact, one of the most baffling vanishings of all time simply couldn’t have happened – and yet it did.

Charlie Lawson, the quiet, unassuming man had become more outgoing, especially with the children. He laughed and told jokes, which he never did. His wife might have been happy with those changes in her husband if they hadn’t been so abrupt – and if Charlie had not been spending an inordinate amount of time with their 17-year-old daughter, Marie. Something terrible was going to happen, and it would ruin Christmas in a way that only murder and tragedy can do.

One of the strangest murder sprees in American history occurred across Louisiana and Texas in the early 1910s. Local newspapers called the first crime "the most brutal murder in the history of this section," and there would be many more -- all linked to the same killer. The newspapers of the era, dealing with murder victims that were all African-Americans, claimed the killings were connected to a deranged Voodoo woman and a cult called the "Church of Sacrifice," which used the victims for bloody rituals. The story wasn't true – the real story may have been even stranger – and they remain unsolved.

During the early years of the Great Depression, the crimes of Harry Powers appalled and fascinated thousands of people, but he is barely remembered today – much like the methods that he used to find his victims. He sought out women through matrimonial mail-order ads, seeking wives to live on his peaceful West Virginia farm. But those who answered the ads were never seen again.

On March 14, 1960, the bodies of three women from the Chicago suburbs were discovered in St. Louis Canyon, one of the many natural wonders at Starved Rock State Park, near Utica, Illinois. The crime shocked northern Illinois and led to a manhunt that snared a confessed killer who spent the next 59 years behind bars. It is one of the most shocking stories to ever occur in this otherwise peaceful region – and it left lingering spirits behind.

One of the most disturbing multiple murders in California history occurred on April 11, 1981, when three victims – a mother, her teenage son, and the son's friend – were beaten to death in a remote cabin in the woods while children slept soundly in the next room. A fourth victim – a 12-year-old daughter – vanished in the night, and her body was found a year later, miles away from the gruesome scene. The murders remain unsolved to this day, but it went on to inspire THE STRANGERS, one of the most terrifying films ever made.

On January 23, 1897, the body of a young woman named Zona Heaster Shue was discovered in her home in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. It seemed to be a rather ordinary case of perhaps domestic discord gone wrong, but in the end, the case turned out to be anything but ordinary. In fact, it went on to become the only case in which the word of a ghost helped to solve a crime and convict a murderer!

On March 19, 1874, horror came to the small town of Millstadt, Illinois. It was a place where nothing bad could ever really happen – or at least that's what the residents there in the latter part of the nineteenth century believed. However, the murders that occurred on Saxtown Road forever shattered that illusion. When a local German family was brutally slaughtered in 1874, it created a dark, unsolved mystery – and a haunting that continues today.

On November 16, 1982, two Wyoming highway patrolmen discovered an abandoned car along a desolate stretch of rural highway. The engine was running, the driver's door was standing open, but the driver was gone. One of the most shameful events to ever occur in American history happened in the small southern Illinois town of Herrin in the summer of 1922. It would be a horrific labor union massacre that would garner national outrage and would forever stain the area with blood. It would also leave behind a fearful haunting that would linger in a place outside of town called Harrison Woods for more than three decades after the carnage occurred. The ghosts remained as a reminder of the dark deeds of man.

On December 1, 1926, a young woman from Bennington College, located in the Green Mountains of Vermont, vanished without a trace. And while the search for Paula Welden may have gotten the most attention over the years, she was not the only person to disappear near Glastonbury Mountain and its scenic Long Trail. To this day, no trace of any of them has ever been found.

In the spring of 1846, a wagon train of hopeful immigrants left Illinois, bound for California, but they had no idea what awaited them on the trail. Cursed by bad luck and mistakes, they took an untested route through mountains and deserts, only to be stranded in the Sierra Nevadas by heavy winter snowfalls. What followed was the horror of death, starvation, desperation, and cannibalism.

What happened in the town of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, between 1890 and 1910? What caused the once pleasant and thriving small town to become a place of death, horror, and strangeness? The mines and lumber industries shut down at that time, leaving people without jobs and causing the banks and many businesses to fail. Illness spread, and people turned to alcohol for comfort. Bad weather devastated the local crops, and the cold, bleak winters caused starvation and anguish. Talk of witchcraft and devil worship circulated among the residents. During this terrible period, the seemingly doomed inhabitants of Black River Falls surrendered to suicide, murder, destruction, and depravity.

In the wilds of northwestern Connecticut are the remains of a small village called Dudleytown. The homes of this once thriving community are long gone, but the land where the town once stood is far from empty. Amidst the forest and rocks are tales of ghosts, demons, unexplained mysteries, curses, and a rich history that dates back to the very beginnings of America.

Religious zealots have been awaiting the appearance of the Antichrist on earth for centuries. There have been those who have actively sought him out and some who would do anything to destroy him – like a woman named Rhoda Wakeman, a prophet and religious leader of the nineteenth century. In fact, on the morning of December 24, 1855, Rhoda killed a man who was possessed by the Antichrist in New Haven, Connecticut. The man was a member of her sect, and he participated in his own execution… It is a story of murder, prophecy, religious mania, and a death-crazed belief that the end of the world was coming soon.

In the modern days of the 1920s, a pair of homicides that came to be known as the "Hex Murders" – and the subsequent hex scare that followed – marked a substantial turning point in American history, especially in the way that the public perceived the practice of folk magic – or what locals called "pow-wowing" – in the region.

Salem was far from the only "witchcraft outbreak" in American history. Witches – falsely accused and the real thing – can be found throughout the early history of America, from healers to herbalists, hex signs, and hoodoo doctors. And in some cases of accused witches, murder and death followed in the wake of public outcry. Here's what happened.

"The 19th of May 1780, was a remarkable dark day. Candles were lighted in many houses; the birds were silent and disappeared, and the fowls retired to roost. ... A very general opinion prevailed, that the Day of Judgment was at hand," Timothy Dwight wrote. The end was coming, and God had lowered his hand over the people of New England for their wickedness. Or at least that's what a lot of religious zealots believed in the spring of 1780. It seemed that the people of America were doomed. What happened that day? No one knows.

Dark things lurk in what we mistakenly believe is the idyllic setting of America's heartland. The farms, fields, and rural villages are drenched in blood- and we are ready to dive in.
America's forests, farms, and fields will surrender the tales of witchcraft and hexes, cults and curses, calamities and cannibalism, massacres and mysterious disappearances, and more magic, mayhem, sinners, and spirits than we've ever offered before.
Get ready for "Woods & Fields, Dark & Wicked." Coming in January, 2022.
On the surface, Marilyn seemed to live the glamorous life of a movie star and celebrity, but she was also a very private, very smart, and often very troubled woman. Part of his enduring fame comes from the fact that she was gone too soon – a victim of apparent suicide at the age of only 36.

The death of a celebrity is, without a doubt, always an object of morbid curiosity in America. When the Hollywood notable dies under strange or bloody circumstances, then the death becomes even more curious, and gets bigger headlines, for an even longer period of time. Today, we discuss the horrific murder of Colonel Hogan himself, Bob Crane.

On August 23, 1926, the most heartbreaking Hollywood news of the silent film era reached the general public when New York City’s Polyclinic Hospital announced that Rudolph Valentino was dead.
Valentino -- known as the “Sheik” and “Hollywood’s Greatest Lover” – had died from a burst appendix. It seemed too boring of a death for a man like Valentino and, not surprisingly, rumors followed him to the grave.

Fatty was the first Hollywood star to get “CANCELED,” as it’s called today, and his career destruction followed a crime that he not only didn’t commit but was found innocent of at trial. But by then, it was too late, and no one believed him anyway.

On February 1, 1922, William Desmond Taylor, one of the most famous movie directors in early Hollywood, was murdered in his bungalow in the Westlake District of Los Angeles. At first, it was assumed that he died of natural causes – until someone discovered that he had been shot in the back by a .38-caliber revolver.

Hollywood was home to movie stars in the first decades of the twentieth century – which came with their share of scandals, drug overdoses, and sexcapades – but in 1920, Prohibition arrived and created a whole new set of problems for Los Angeles.

On April 26, 1880, the Tombstone, Arizona, newspaper, The Epitaph, printed a startling report. According to the article, two cowboys saw a giant bird outside of town, shot it, and carried its gigantic carcass into Tombstone.
How, I asked myself, could what seemed to be a prehistoric flying creature have been shot down by cowboys in the 1880s? Such a thing seemed impossible, but here was the story – and, of course, there was the photograph. That was the really exciting part! I still remember what that photograph looked like! Or do I?

In today's bonus episode, Troy discusses The Spanish Flu and has some recommendations for this holiday season to avoid having history repeat itself.
Hollywood. As we keep telling you, it’s not really on the maps anymore. It’s not a town and hasn’t been for years. It’s just another part of Los Angeles that doesn’t look nearly as great as it does in the movies or on postcards. It’s a little run-down, more than a little seedy, and desperately trying to hang onto its former glamor like an aging actress that’s had one too many facelifts.
But Hollywood is a place for reinvention. Such is the case with the once famous Knickerbocker Hotel – well, not the by the hour part, but you’ll soon understand what I mean – it started as one thing, became another, and then something else altogether.

Today we talk The Cecil Hotel, Richard Ramirez, Elisa Lam, and numerous suicides.
Hollywood is nothing but a façade these days. It’s not even a real town anymore – it’s just another part of Los Angeles that looks a little worse for wear. And the sun-bleached hotels are much like Hollywood itself. They’re aging, faded, and trying to hang onto the glamor they had in decades past, when it was movie stars and not hookers that you’d find along Hollywood Boulevard. Some of them may be seedy and a little beaten up, but they have a history – and it’s a history that keeps coming back again and again and often, it returns as stories of ghosts and other assorted strangeness...

Many of Hollywood’s older hotels are much like Hollywood itself. They are aging and slightly faded, still trying to hang onto the shimmer of glamour that they enjoyed in the days gone by. Like other parts of Hollywood, a few of the hotels have seen face-lifts in recent years, which have stirred up memories and “spirits” of the past. Not all the ghostly stories, and wicked scandals, are products of recent times, however, many of them have been around for years.

What is about a theater that seems to attract a ghost? Could it be the range of emotions expressed by the actors, from joy to sorrow to fear? Perhaps all that emotion attracts spirits who need that energy to exist. Or perhaps terrible or tragic events occur in a theater – just as they do in other kinds of buildings – and that leaves an impression behind as a haunting.

In 1959, Harold Perelson seemed to be a man with everything going for him. He had a distinguished career as a doctor, a beautiful wife, loving children, and a wonderful home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles that was ideal for what seemed to be the perfect family.
And then on the night of December 6, neighbors were awakened by the sound of Harold Perelson’s daughter, Judye, screaming and banging on their door...When the police arrived, they entered the Perelson house and found Harold’s wife, Lillian, dead in her bed and Harold himself dead from a massive drug overdose. He had apparently committed suicide.
A copy of Dante’s DIVINE COMEDY was open on Harold’s nightstand, highlighting a passage that read:
Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost…
It might as well have been Harold’s suicide note.

What makes Hollywood – “Hollywood?” The movies, of course, and the movie stars. But behind the façade – where the sausage is made, so to speak, are the studios where the magic happens. And the desperate spirits who refuse to vacate long after the director has called "cut."

At just three minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam, which had been designed as a reservoir for the Los Angeles water supply by William Mulholland, suddenly failed, releasing 11 billion gallons of water into a narrow valley in northeastern Los Angeles County, destroying everything in its path. Over the course of the next four hours, a roaring wall of water swept through the night, traveling 55 miles from the San Francisquito Valley, through the Santa Clara Valley, and on to the Pacific Ocean.

On this bonus episode, Troy discusses the "Phantom of the Heights", a tall, thin figure, dressed all in black, who began sprinting across the rooftops of O’Donnell Heights. It leapt on and off buildings, broke into houses, attacked people, enticed a young girl to crawl under a car and played music in the nearby graveyard. Groups of young men patrolled the streets, while others waited by their windows at night, keeping a sleepy watch for the “Phantom Prowler” that eluded his pursuers and vanished into the cemetery before he could be caught.

New Orleans war against vice – like the Great War in Europe – appeared to be nearly at an end. The city was poised to become a normal, orderly, Christian place that the reformers wanted it to be. Until, that is, the appearance of a mysterious figure with an ax that would start a frenzy in New Orleans – over murder and, of all things, jazz music – that was like nothing the city had seen before or since.

Vampires, ghosts, monsters, and an assortment of murderers. All of them have roamed the streets of New Orleans at one time or another and have become part of the city’s spookiest lore. Some of these boogeymen – from the Needle Men to the Gown Man to Hugging Molly – have sometimes even caused more fear than the killers have. And that’s largely because they conjured up some very bad memories of the past, especially when it came to the Night Doctors.

New Orleans is a city that is known for being out of the ordinary. There are dozens and dozens of old, historic hotels, inns, and mansions that have been turned into bed and breakfasts and guest houses in the French Quarter, and all of them have the kind of atmosphere that you won’t find in any other city in America.

There are a lot of things that define the spirit of New Orleans, from its music to its ghosts, but among the top things are its food and drinks. Sometimes the meals are so tempting and memorable that people can't seem to stay away, even after death.

There are 38 cemeteries in New Orleans, so there’s no way that we can get to them all. Instead, we’ll focus on the history of death, burials, and boneyards in the city and then take a closer look at the cemetery that is the most popular among tourists. Of course, just using those two words together – “cemetery” and “tourist” – says a lot what kind of traveler embraces New Orleans. I’m thinking that it’s a lot like the kind of listener that never misses this podcast.

Ask any tourist – or anyone who watched a season of American Horror Story – and they can tell you that Marie Laveau is the undisputed Queen of Voodoo in New Orleans. Voodoo is as big a part of New Orleans as jazz, gumbo, and Mardi Gras. Most tourists, even after seeing the voodoo shops in the French Quarter, assume that voodoo is a thing of the past – but they couldn’t be more wrong. The religious faith is very much alive today and it’s taken just as seriously now as it was in the days of Marie Laveau.

Recorded live at Dead of Winter 2020. Today, we discuss the "unsinkable" ship, the RMS Titanic, and the spirits of the 1,517 people she left behind.
On April 14, 1912, four days into its maiden voyage, the world’s largest passenger steamship, RMS Titanic, struck an iceberg and sank in just 2 hours and 40 minutes – carrying 1,517 people to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Jazz music is, without a doubt, an American invention. That’s about the only thing that we know for sure, other than it originated within the African-American communities of New Orleans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was not actually born in the red-light districts of New Orleans – it just seemed that way. It was in the city’s whorehouses that jazz became famous.

In the early 1800's, New Orleans was a tough place. Business at the popular pirate party cove, Grand Terre, was shabbily conducted, with every man for himself, and it soon became clear that a leader was needed to take matters into hand and bring order out of the chaos. The man who stepped into that role was Jean Lafitte, the infamous pirate to ever call New Orleans "home."

In the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter – just beyond Jackson Square and the St. Louis Cathedral – is the Bourbon Orleans Hotel. It is a place where the past truly collides with the present in both colorful and eccentric ways. The building, and the ground that it stands upon, has seen a wide variety of uses during its history, and it seems that every one of those moments in time has left behind an impression in the shape of ghosts and spirits.

On April 10, 1843, a fire broke out in the home of Dr. Louis LaLaurie and his wife, Delphine. The house, located on Royal Street, was one of the showplaces of Creole New Orleans. The mansion had played host to some of the most elaborate soirees and parties in the city but in recent months, rumors about the treatment of some of the LaLaurie slaves had caused some party invitations to be declined.

In this episode, Troy and Cody break down THE Haunted House in New Orleans- The LaLaurie Mansion. It was --and is-- the best-known haunted house in the French Quarter and yet its name was seldom mentioned. There was no need. Horrible things had happened there – horrible enough to earn the house a reputation that still lingers more than two centuries later.

American Hauntings Podcast discusses history, hauntings, legends, lore, and the dark side of American history. Each episode begins with a quick history lesson and then dives into morbidly curious conversation.
Hosted by Cody Beck and Troy Taylor, the hosts try to make these heavy topics of yesterday a little lighter, and would love for you to take a trip down memory lane each week to explore the dark side of American history.
