We're back! For today's Dune Talk show, we're happy to bring you this interview with Dominic J. Nardi and N. Trevor Brierly. Our special guests are the editors of Discovering Dune: Essays on Frank Herbert’s Epic Saga (2022), a collection of academic essays that brings together 14 insightful perspectives on the rich themes of Dune—including politics, religion, ecology, and philosophy—as well as explorations into several of its key characters.
Garin and Marcus bring their questions regarding "Political Prescience" and "A Critical Moment", the respective essays that Dominic and Trevor contributed. We're back for our first release of 2022! This week's discussion kicks off as Paul and Jessica leave the stilltent and we meet the desert's cutest inhabitant. We continue our scene-by-scene Dune: Part One movie review. This week on Dune Talk we pick up from the 50-minute mark, with Paul walking into his first strategy meeting. Gurney takes the opportunity to embellish on the incident with the hunter, although this only partially lightens the mood.
This passage of the film establishes how precarious the situation is for House Atreides and introduces us to two Fremen leaders, however highlight is the first encounter of Paul Atreides with the deep desert of Arrakis—there the spice melange causes an awakening deep inside. Finally, we get to see Salusa Secundus, homeworld of the feared Sardaukar warriors. We're going deep into all the details, so the show contains full spoilers for the movie.

As House Atreides arrive to take over Arrakis, there's so much happening—both in conversations and the visual spectacle. There's also the religious aspect of this story and we dive deep into the native peoples' beliefs and how the powers of the Imperium are involved in these messianic myths.
