Making Conversation is a bi-weekly (but sometimes weekly) podcast where we celebrate the act of making in all its forms. We spotlight the incredible individuals powering our creative community, dive into need-to-know stories of craft and its history, and explore issues deeply rooted in our values of diversity and inclusion.
The podcast Making Conversation is created by Making Co.. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
In this special episode, I hit the road to Portland, OR, to sit down with Rachel, the creative mind behind Ritual Dyes and founder of Sacred Sheep, a festival dedicated to makers, especially those passionate about the fiber arts.
From discovering her love for knitting and hand-dyeing yarn to the creation of a highly curated, community-focused fiber arts festival that celebrates all things making, you'll love getting to know Rachel!
Grab your WIP and hit play! Psssst...tickets are still available so I hope to see you there. ;)

The world of crafting and making should be a space where everyone feels welcome and empowered. However, there are barriers—both visible and invisible—that can exclude or marginalize makers with disabilities. In this episode I am joined by the super fabulous Beth Gorishek, The Adaptive Knitter & Kira Dulaney of Kirk K Designs and we chat about the ways in which ableism manifests in our community and, more importantly, how we can actively work to dismantle these barriers. If you prefer to watch this chat, pop over to our YouTube channel. xoxo

To know Jess is to love Jess and Jess' love of this special fiber arts community is very evident in everything she does. From in her yarn shop on Bainbridge Island, WA to Flock Fiber Festival, a yarn show in Seattle, WA, celebrating a love of all things wool, the fibers arts community is so very lucky to have these two spaces to come together and celebrate these things that we love and bring us the most joy!
Jen hopped on a ferry and headed out to Bainbridge to chat with Jess about La Mercerie and their new space (which... spoiler alert was the home of Churchmouse Yarns for years!) and also how Flock is growing in its second year and the things that she's doing to keep it so very special.
So grab your WIP and hit play and we hope to see you at Flock Fiber Festival!

Hello, makers! Super excited to bring you this episode with our pal, Catherine. Just a heads up, there are parts of this episode that are a little more visual as we give a shop tour. Click to watch instead!
Brooklyn General Store has been the go-to place for crafty supplies of all kinds for NYC makers since 2002. We sat down with the Queen of Union Street, BGS owner, designer, maker, event planner extraordinaire–Catherine Clark. Get to know her maker journey, the story of how Brooklyn General moved from the waiting room of Catherine’s midwifery office to the current location, how her and Aimée of La Bien Aimée became besties and more!
Brooklyn General Store
https://brooklyngeneral.com
128 Union St, Brooklyn, NY 11231
Brooklyn General Store is tucked away on a sweet block West of the Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill neighborhoods and North of Red Hook. This commercial block on Union Street used to be a thriving shopping block for all types of foods and goods. Brooklyn General’s home within the Old Frank’s Department Store is a throw back to that era, with its preserved floor to ceiling shelves, rolling ladders and classic old wooden floors. The vintage interior is not reproduced, just uncovered, cleaned and painted.
Brooklyn General Store was created in an effort to provide the highest quality materials to a community of devoted artists and craftspeople and to promote making things by hand through inspiration and education. Not only is it a place to feast your eyes and hands on glorious colors and patterns and textures but it is a place that respects and honors a time when a trip to the country store was a way of life. It is a place where a quick trip for a yard of fabric or a skein of yarn turns into an hour of sharing, teaching, inspiring and encouraging all the amazing and creative makers that are also out for that quick trip to the General Store...
Following its mission to promote all things handmade, Brooklyn General offers a wide variety of classes in knitting, sewing, quilting, felting, spinning, rug hooking and embroidery. Classes are limited in size in order for students to have ample individual attention. Studio time with our fantastic BERNINA classroom machines is also available. BrooklynGeneral.com was created to share our carefully picked goods with all the creative souls outside of Brooklyn, NY.

In this episode of the podcast, we’re taking it back to New York City! If you’ve been following along for a while you know that we’ve been visiting events around the world, collecting and then sharing important stories. (Mostly fiber arts related but we want to expand that. Hey other maker events, hit us up!)
This time we did things a little differently. The lovely Catherine of Brooklyn General Store and Aimée of La Bien Aimée asked us to bring a bit of our Meet and Greets to their 2024 Vogue Knitting Live booth. So we set up shop and gathered some crafty friends, old and new. We laugh. We cry. We get really honest.

Liza Laird is a fiber artist, human mom, dog mom, cancer survivor and author of Yoga of Yarn, a knitter’s guidebook to self discovery. (Don't worry dear maker! The book is for makers of all kinds. We chat about that too!)
We journey through Liza's life--deciding to leave the corporate world to pursue her passions, how she approached writing a book (with good tips if you've been thinking about venturing into it!), her journey with cancer, and of course some of the wonderful learnings from her book.
Oh, and make sure to grab one of your favorite supplies too. Liza leads us in an exercise and you'll need it. ;)
THE AUTHOR
Liza Laird is a knitter, yogi, mama of a few little humans, and homesteader with alpacas, chickens, and a feisty shiba inu. She is a cofounder of Ragline Knits, through which she teaches knitting and mindfulness classes and hosts retreats online and around the world.
She trained as a yoga instructor at YogaWorks, as a yoga therapist at Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, and as a life coach with Coaches Training Institute. She has a BA in psychology from Lafayette College.
THE BOOK
Using a unique combination of yoga philosophy, movements, meditations, breathing techniques and stitch patterns, Yoga of Yarn re-establishes our makers practice on a new, stronger foundation -- a foundation that not only enhances our experience as makers, but also helps us maintain a centered calm in every aspect of our lives.
No prior yoga experience is necessary. All you need is a body, a chair, and a sincere willingness to care for yourself and try new things that will help you knit (or your art of choice!) with greater ease.

Pt 3 of our series that features Flock Fiber Festival meet & greet sneak peeks and the best wifi that Seattle's Parks department has to offer (lol) is here!
This was our 1st festival partnership in this capacity. Meeting everyone and collecting their inspiring stories was so special, but we learned a lot! I cover some of those learnings and of course, you'll hear how these vendors we chatted with began their journeys as a maker! We also have a special peek into how 4 small businesses in WA work together to create beautiful fiber magic!
Andrea of Apple Yarns- With my husband, Andrew Evans, we started Apple Yarns in Bellingham, WA, in 2007 in a 700 sqft retail store. Today Apple Yarns is made up of 4 unique divisions; in-person, online, subscriptions, and wholesale and we now occupy 4,000sq. ft. in Bellingham. In addition to loving colorful fiber, knitting, and crochet, one of the things that makes us unique is my love of small business.
Jeananne of Cerulean Orchid- An online yarnie boutique and pattern house. We explore our curiosities and nerdom through yarn, patterns, stickers, project bags, and other yarnie goodies in collaboration with our favorite creatives.
Jean of Juni and Si - I started dyeing out of curiosity for how it was done and quickly realized I loved seeing my ideas put to yarn. Before I had a plan, I knew I wanted to name my colorways after songs I love. To me, music and color are a perfect match. Both can ignite inspiration, spark a memory or even convey a person’s mood without words.
Jessica of Purls and Postulates - Aside from inspiring the name for her small business, Jessica's passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and cultivating that passion in others helped her lead a successful career in education for almost a decade before she turned her focus to dyeing yarns and ensuring her two boys grow up with an enthusiasm for learning.
Ashleigh of Sewrella - Based in Apex, North Carolina, thousands of skeins of our whimsical, magical colorways get dyed every week for our preorder collections and in-stock tonals. We believe in the maker's experience being an indulgent one, complete with curated tools, housemade wool wash, hand cream formulated for makers, and so much more.
Reshma of Hello Lavender - I launched Hello Lavender in 2016. I started by going to craft fairs and selling knitwear online but then transitioned into making polymer clay stitch markers and earrings in 2020, which took off in a way I could never have imagined.
Fibershed Chat - Sarah from San Juan Woolworks, Jess from Skagit Woolen Works, Lydia of Abundant Earth, and Emily of Local Color - A chat about the ways their businesses collaborate to make local yarn and fiber in western Washington, from raising the sheep and dye plants to carding and spinning.

We're back with more super fun vendor meet & greet sneak peeks from Flock Fiber Festival, featuring the best wifi that Seattle's Parks department has to offer. 🤣
ICYMI-We sat down with some of the vendors and recorded interviews. The goal was to bring a little Flock to those who could not make it or wanted to know more about the vendors that brought all their artistic beauty to year one.
Stay tuned for part 3! Full meet & greet videos coming to the Making app soon! Watch this episode on YouTube.
1- Sarah of Sea Change Fibers - Sea Change Fibers began in October 2016 as The Dye Project in Portland, Oregon. Born of a desire to dye tonal colors on non-superwash bases, which were largely unavailable in the hand dyed yarn market at that time, our color palette and aesthetic developed quickly. We moved to a home near Monterey Bay in 2017 and have evolved into Sea Change Fibers, a new name for 2020 and beyond that reflects both our location and our commitment to social and environmental justice.
2- Sophie of Botanical Yarn - Botanical Yarn is based in York, UK. Inspired by everything botanical, Sophie has created an exclusive colorway, sock set, mini skein set, and project bag exclusively for Flock Fiber Festival. Sophie is obsessed with PINK so expect lots of shades of cerise! Sophie was very excited to be flying over to Seattle from the UK.
3- Bea of Wooldreamers - Wooldreamers is a yarn company based in Spain specializing in Spanish Merino wool with an aim to reestablish the cultivation of wool in Spain, the country of origin of Merino sheep. With a lineage tracing back to the middle ages, the Merino breed was once fiercely guarded for its superior wool—in fact, it was prohibited to take them out of the country! We are excited to grow our community of wool enthusiasts by bringing these incredible fibers to the world in the form of beautiful yarns and thoughtfully made woolen items.
4- Katlin of Porter Wool Co. - My goal is to provide crafters with wearable, classic and eclectic colors. I specifically love to dye tonals that are rich and saturated, are easy to pair with speckled/variegated skeins, and are also perfect as stand-alone colorways in a project! I also love playing with color and texture in my hand-dyed fiber top for spinners, and my large 4oz art batts featuring farm wool from small U.S. farms.
5- Jenny of 316 Dye Studio - A Wichita, KS native (area code 316), I first began experimenting with dyeing just as Wichita was losing its last LYS. What began as a fun side hustle to fulfill a need in the fiber community, has now grown into a full-time business. My colorways are inspired from nature to neons, and everything in between.
6- Aimée of La Bien Aimée - Established in 2015, La Bien Aimée is an artisanal dye studio located in Paris, France. Aimée Gille and her team dye beautiful and sophisticated colors of yarn that reflect a unique and vibrant point of view.

We're back from a mini summer break with an important message! This episode is a celebration of what creativity means to tiny humans. A way to remind us as adults that when we create, it's not about the likes or the pressure to create x amount of new things per year, and it’s not about the perfection we often crave. It's about honoring the act of making, how it makes us happy and helps us feel whole.

Also, they forgot to add in their moment of gratitude at the end so as to continue to spread goodness in the world, here they are:
Lars
I am grateful for my friends. I had a moment recently watching as the pandemic is starting to slip from our collective (short-term) memory and from our day-to-day lives — mask mandates are all but gone, popular restaurants and bars are full again, many of the once-pervasive visual cues of a global pandemic are disappearing — where I felt really lucky to have the friends I do, especially during the darkest moments of the lockdowns. Friends to share concerns with, friends to distract from the horror, friends to share art and music and poetry with, friends to talk with about the books we read together, friends to feel close to even as we FaceTimed from across the country or across the world.
Anyways, yeah. Feeling really grateful to and lucky to know my chosen family.
Jen
I am grateful for the opportunities that I have given myself to stop and celebrate wins. We move so quickly sometimes that it feels like we just have to go go go. Stop and give yourself a moment of cheer. Reflect back on how far you've come, even if it feels hard to give yourself that space. You're amazing and resilient and powerful and don't you forget it. ;)

We believe that the simple act of making can transform your life and in turn change our world. This is why Making exists.

We believe that the simple act of making can transform your life and in turn change our world. This is why Making exists. It all starts with inspiration. We’re inspired by people, by places, by experiences—a beautiful photo, a soft wool, a kind heart. These are the things that motivate us to make.
Making is here to disrupt systems—systems of oppression, systems that only benefit certain groups of people, and systems that extract. We’re here to challenge the narrative of profit over people. We believe a company can be founded for the purpose of good and change the world for better, while also creating opportunity at scale. Makers are tired of the monoliths. The few companies that comprise our only choices of how we connect, how we transact, and how we learn.
Makers are ready for a better alternative and that is what we are building.

I’m your host Ashley Yousling. Today I’m sitting down to talk with the most joyful and loving Paula Pereira. Paula is full of life and her delight is infectious as she tells us stories about her creative journey and the discoveries she’s made along the way. If you’ve followed Paula’s work, you’re likely familiar with her designs in various publications, including Making magazine, and the beautiful techniques, unique stitch patterns, and blended yarns she uses to create timeless knitwear pieces. This coming March Paula is one of instructors at Ritual, our first ever virtual retreat for makers. She will be hosting a knitting ritual workshop during this incredible 2+ day event. We’re going to have the most amazing time, so go learn more at makingzine.com and register to join us.

I’m your host Ashley Yousling and this week I’m talking with the most amazing maker with the most soothing voice ever, Yarrow Magdalena. Yarrow is an incredible artist with a deep devotion to helping others find creative and personal wellbeing through art, reflection, community, and love of our own bodies and souls. We traverse many stories and topics, from personal creative practice, grief, the impact social media and technology has on our lives, and feeding our imaginations.
This month Yarrow is hosting a beautiful creative winter retreat. Join them and others for a five day creative retreat you can do from home, like an artist residency but without the travel and time away from your favorite mug, bed & art supplies. Meet from December 29th to January 2nd every day to close out the year, create together and set meaningful intentions for 2023.
Come to as many sessions as you like, work on whatever project speaks to you and start the year in a magical & creative way that will stay with you throughout 2023.
Expect journaling prompts, tarot spreads, guided meditations and other resources to sweeten your time together. You can come in your pajamas, have kids or pets in the background and stay off video if you like. For more information and to register, visit themakingapp.com or download the Making app and find “Creative Winter Retreat” under classes. We hope to see you there!
You can connect with Yarrow on the Making app @yarrowmagdalena, their website at yarrowmagdelana.com and their podcast Creative Devotion can be found wherever you listen to podcasts.

I’m your host Ashley Yousling and today I’m talking with someone whom I’ve known for many years, all the way back to when I first began this podcast and she purchased some yarn from my little online shop. Françoise Danoy whom you may also know as Frenchie, is the creator behind Aroha Knits, Swatch Studio Circle, and other fun ventures like the Yarn Alchemist. But we don’t spend much time talking about knitting or making, and just like with every episode, we go where the conversation leads and sometimes that means we go deep, to vulnerable and tender parts of our lives and stories. I’m so grateful for Françoise’s openness, for sharing this part of her story, heritage and heart, and for her permission to share that with you. I hope you take a moment to really hear Françoise’s story and all the richness and beauty of it, while also gaining more insight through the lived experience she so graciously takes time to share with us.

Today I’m talking with artist, maker, crafter, and designer Elīza Māra. That intro will make a little more sense once you dive into this episode haha, but I think it’s important to mention that since its inception I’ve approached each podcast episode as a conversation between myself and the guest, because of this these conversations can often be quite intimate and nuanced. My conversation with Elīza is no exception, we cover a lot of ground and it may resonate with some and not others, all of which is ok. I’m grateful to Elīza for her transparency, for sharing her authentic story as she’s still actively navigating her creative journey. I hope we can all be inspired by her courage and bold dreams. I hope you enjoy listening in on our conversation.

Aimée is a whole vibe, one that bubbles up and overflows in the form of joy, encouragement, all things soft, and of course the color yellow. I’m grateful for Aimée and all she brings to this community of ours and I hope you enjoy listening in on our conversation.

Today we’re taking it back, specifically to November 2016 to one of my favorite past episodes of what was then, the Woolful podcast. We’ll be re-sharing some of these highlight episodes over the coming months and I’m excited to re-listen along with you. Paola is an amazing woman with an amazing story, from growing up in rural Italy to immersion in Tibetan life to finding herself in Brooklyn, with a family and a rich history and future for her fiber and textile company mYak. Like with many yarns, mYak has a beautiful story and impact on our global fiber community and I hope you enjoy getting to know Paola and the mYak vision as much as I have. You can find Paola at mYak.it and on Instagram @myak_fibers.

Today I’m talking with embroidery designer and soon-to-be author Melissa Galbraith of McreativeJ. We’ve loved getting to know Melissa over the past year as she was an early maker on the Making app, joined many of our online gatherings, and has shared her love of embroidery and passion for teaching others. Next spring she’s releasing her first book, How to Embroider Texture and Pattern : 20 Designs That Celebrate Pattern, Color, and Pop-Up Stitching, so make sure to keep an eye out! I love Melissa’s down to earth approach not only to embroidery and crafting in general, but also when it comes to building a business. I think you’ll feel encouraged and inspired. You can find Melissa on the Making app @melissa-mcreativej and on Instagram at @mcreativej.

We’re in the midst of a series here on the podcast where we get to know everyone on the Making team. If you haven’t already caught up on some of these more recent episode, I definitely recommend you do. Making is what it is because of a small and very special group of people, people that I feel incredibly lucky to work and experience life together with. Today I’m talking with someone I absolutely adore, Jen Joyce, our head of marketing. It’s likely you’ve seen and heard Jen as she is everywhere and does many things, including all of our TikTok and Instagram content. Jen has the biggest heart of anyone I know and that comes through in our conversation. Many times in our team meetings we all find ourselves in tears, with Jen leading the charge, she is a Cancer after all. I feel incredibly grateful that she “said yes” when I asked her to join the Making team and I’m thrilled you get to hear more of her story today.

Today I’m talking with Adella Colvin the founder of LolaBean Yarn Co. When I was writing this intro I was trying to figure out how to capture who Adella is and her passion for all she does and wants to do, but that’s proven to be a bit difficult and those of you who know Adella can understand why. With an incredibly strong voice and spirit, Adella is on a mission to make the world a better place, whether that be for individuals, communities, aspiring business owners and makers, or her daughter Lola. Adella shares her story and takes us from the South, to Spanish Harlem, to Georgia, and on into the future. She is one of the funniest people I’ve had on the podcast, I left our call with my cheeks sore from laughing and smiling, and I hope you do too.

I’m your host Ashley Yousling. I started this podcast back in 2014 in the laundry room/closet of my San Francisco studio apartment. At the time I was working full time leading product at tech companies and while fulfilling, I was looking for a way to connect with makers and creatives outside of my tech life. I’ve always loved stories and could easily sit for hours listening to others share their creative journey’s. That is where this podcast all began, a way to story tell, a way to come together and connect with others just like ourselves. The podcast aired regular weekly episodes for a few years until I became a mom of two. Still working in tech, I found it nearly impossible to keep up and the podcast went on hiatus. Over the past few years it’s been an intention to relaunch the podcast in a consistent weekly format, to bring back the stories and some fresh new content. So here we are, back and better than ever. We’ve made a lot of changes to Making over the past year and Carrie my co-founder and I thought it would be fun to sit down and share a bit more about these changes, our lives, and what’s to come. So grab your project or go on walk with us as we dive in.

I love hearing people’s stories, the journey, the deep and the not so deep. It’s the very reason I started the podcast back in 2014, because hearing someone’s story, their creative story, is inspiring and motivating. Sanae Ishida is a quiet force in this community, whether you’re familiar with her work or not, her story and message is so very powerful. She’s an incredible maker, designer, author and artist, in fact she painted the cover for our newest issue, COLOR and she’s had projects in nearly all of our past issues. Sometimes we forget that those behind some of the biggest names and companies in the industry are just that; people with a vision, makers with a mission and entrepreneurs with a passion and will so strong. Jared Flood is the force behind one of our favorite companies, Brooklyn Tweed. What started out as an idea, quickly grew into something much greater than even he anticipated. Collectivo began as an idea in 2016 and was founded by Vail Fletcher, a professor of gender and environmental studies with a fascination for the handmade, Jessica Helgerson, an interior designer with a deep affection for Mexico, and Cristina Niculescu, a travel-loving Spanish professor. Collectivo collects beautiful handmade goods straight from the source, with these three women traveling to remote indigenous villages to meet the makers and learn about the age-old traditions behind each craft and document the hours, weeks or even months that go into making a single piece. Each region has its natural materials, each village its speciality, and each family its own take on tradition. Their mission is to share with you their love for Mexico through the artistry and stories they collect along the way and Collectivo brings you these treasures and the stories behind them.
