Prayers of REST

Have you ever desperately wondered: “Where did my joy go? And how do I get it back?” If yes, you’re in good company, friend.

Today's prayer of REST is based on Zephaniah 3:17, which teaches us that God delights in His people: "For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”  

This season, we’re asking God to restore to us the joy of our salvation, and each week we’ll base our prayers on a different Bible passage that speaks of joy. Together, we’ll ask the Lord to do a new work in our hearts as we: 

• Recite God’s Goodness
• Express Our Neediness
• Seek His Stillness, and 
• Trust His Faithfulness

“Sinners in the hands of an angry God” is one of the most well-known sermons of all time… but from cover to cover of Scripture, from the Garden of Eden to the marriage supper of the Lamb in Revelation, JOY is central to the Gospel. If you’re afraid or worried that God is angry with you, if you’re anxious because of God’s wrath, there’s really good news in this truth:

Scripture says that Jesus came to make manifest what has always been true about God the Father. It's been quiet here for a few months, but I'm back today with an update on the podcast: we're coming back for one last season: Prayers for Joy. Hurray!

Over the past 18 months, God has been doing a work in my life, restoring the sparkle to my eyes and restoring the joy of His salvation in my life. I wrote a book about it called Delighting in Jesus, launching this December, and I want to take you along on the journey with me. 🤗

We’re still pulling together the final details, but we hope to launch this season at the end of September.

We’ll have the 10-minute Prayers of REST that you’ve come to know and love, plus bonus conversations with my friend Hannah Nitz sharing the back story of how all this came to be. If you don’t yet know Hannah, I can’t wait for you to meet her. I know you’re going to love her as much as I do! 🥰

A BIG THANK YOU for your ongoing support throughout the summer that lifted the financial burden to make this an easy yes.  I’m excited for how God will move in our hearts in the coming months as we ask Him to restore our joy.

If we ever needed a focused season of prayer for joy, I believe it’s this election season. And if ever the onlooking world needed to see believers whose faces radiate with the joy of God’s presence, it’s this season right here.

Please pray for our team as we record these episodes and prepare to share them with the world. And in the meantime, be thinking of who you can invite to join you in prayer. Our favorite seasons of the Prayers of REST podcast involved little prayer groups popping up all over the country, and we’d love to do that one last time. So ask the Lord to bring to your mind a few friends whom you can invite to pray with you this fall. More details on that coming soon!

Do you struggle with doubt about your faith?

When you look at the world around you, do you feel fearful of the future?

My kids are quite young... they're 9, 7, and 5. Fear is kind of a big thing with them, whether it's being afraid of the dark or a new social interaction.

One of the things that I will say to them is this psalm set to song: "When I am afraid, I will trust in you." (Psalm 56:3)

We sing it together at bedtime or before a scary encounter and I wonder... Maybe sometimes as adults, we need that same reminder. And God wants to set us free from fear!

"When I grow up, I'm never going to do that." Have you ever said those words?

When it comes to spiritual warfare, I'll be the first to admit there's a lot I don't know…

I feel like an absolute kindergartner when it comes to these things, but I can read Scripture and recognize that there are realities at work that I might not understand.

As a child, whenever I heard people talking about the Armor of God in church, usually there was this sketch of a Roman soldier that had the helmet and the belt and the shoes…

If we are told to put on the Armor of God in our stand against Satan, it would stand to reason that Jesus Christ Himself did that when He went against Satan in the wilderness in His 40 days of testing…

When I was a child, I used to spend so much time looking out a window daydreaming.

I mean, my mind would just run away from me! As a child, it was fine, but the problem comes when, as adults, we still do not reign in our thoughts.

This is where part of this spiritual war is fought. Our fears, worries, fantasies, and feelings will try to take over, but we are not left without defense.

God has given us His armor, and he's given us something to protect our minds: the Helmet of Salvation.

When the enemy shoots his fiery arrows, will you be ready?

You know how in movies that portray ancient battles, there would be archers that shoot flaming arrows over the city they're trying to capture? The soldiers on the inside of the city are so busy trying to put out fires that they're distracted from the enemy line that is advancing and trying to barge through the gate.

Well, it was a common tactic back in the day and Scripture says that there's a very similar strategy that the enemy uses against us. His fiery arrows are pointed at us so that we might be so busy chasing down little things that we forget the main thing.

We take our eyes off of Jesus because we're so busy putting out little fires. But God has given us armor to counter the enemy's strategy: the Shield of Faith.

Do you know what the devil's favorite weapon is?

Think about it for a moment. Can you picture it? It might surprise you. I'm firmly convinced that the devil's favorite weapon is lies.

Think back to the Garden of Eden. That's how he got Eve… He deceived her with a lie, a half-truth.

And think about how he tempted Jesus in the wilderness… It was by taking scripture and twisting it into half-truths, charging at Him with lies. So it's no surprise that when we are told to put on the Armor of God, the very first piece we are told to put on has to do with confronting the lies of the enemy: the Belt of Truth.

How do you pray for someone who has lost a child?
