To begin, George Feltenstein takes us through the intricate process of restoring the 1940 Technicolor epic "Northwest Passage," starring Spencer Tracy, discussing the hurdles of working with nitrate negatives and the impressive results. This cinema classic from King Vidor brims with adventure and beautiful landscapes that look better than ever.

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review six films from the 1990s to 2000 that released for the first time on Blu-ray.
We start with the animated "Rover Dangerfield," (1991) where Rodney Dangerfield's hallmark humor is impeccably tailored to tickle the funny bones of both kids and adults alike. Next we review the first film released by MTV Films, "Joe's Apartment," (1996) starring a young Jerry O'Connell and a host of singing cockroaches.
From December we start with the excellent, "Saving Grace" (2000), a Indie darling that should not be forgotten, with standout performances from Brenda Blethyn and Craig Ferguson. We then review the romp "A Midwinter's Tale" (1995), directed by Kenneth Branagh. This mock-u-mentary style film is a delightful look behind-the-scenes of indie Shakespearean theater.
We wrap up our reviews with two films released in November. First is the historical drama "Rapa-Nui" (1994) from Kevin Costner's Tig Productions and directed by Kevin Reynolds. Filmed on location on Easter Island, this story of Polynesian history is a visual and dramatic delight. And our last film is the historical romance "In Love and War" (1996) starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and directed by Richard Attenborough. This beautifully shot film is based on the true-life romance of a young Earnest Hemingway and his experiences in Italy during World War I.
We provide a review of each film, the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review five all-time great classic films released on Blu-ray in December. We go through each of the films and the included extras to help you decide if you want to add these films to your home collection.
We start with the highly requested TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932) from MGM starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. This terrific casting made this film a hit on its initial release and led to a series of films. But this is the one that started it all and the new 4K scan means that you now get to see and hear the film in the best condition since its initial release. The same can be said for our next film, ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) starring Greta Garbo in her first "talkie" film. Garbo shines, and the film still packs a punch 93 years after its initial release. Next is the Academy Award-winning film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936) starring the irrepressible William Powell, Best Actress winner Luise Rainer, and Myrna Loy in the biopic on the famous entertainer. We review all of the extras on this packed disc and George details the restoration and many of the stars of the film. Our fourth film is the powerful drama MADAME BOVARY (1949), starring Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louis Jourdan, and James Mason. We discuss the powerful teaming of director Vincente Minnelli and composer Miklos Rozsa and their importance to the film. And we detail the extras, especially the MGM 25th Anniversary retrospective film. We wrap up our discussion with the fan favorite GENTLEMAN JIM (1942) starring Errol Flynn in his favorite role and directed by one of his favorite collaborators, director Raoul Walsh. This is pure entertainment at its best, combining drama, comedy, and sport. The disc is loaded with extras and makes for a tantalizing release.

Join us for a captivating discussion of classic horror auteur Tod Browning with George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive, and esteemed film historians, Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr. Their 20-year-long collaboration started with the DVD release of Mel Brooks’ "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," and has now extended to creating an audio commentary for the upcoming horror/sci-fi film, "The Devil Doll" (1936). That's the jumping-off point for our discussion and appreciation of four of Tod Browning's films released for the first time on Blu-ray in October.
This episode is also a testament to the importance of preserving and cherishing physical media, highlighted through the restoration of Browning's classic horror masterpiece, "Freaks" (1932), undertaken by the Criterion Collection in partnership with Warner Bros. You don't want to miss George Feltenstein's engaging story about the film master that was used in this restoration, and the fifty-year journey to return it to its rightful owner. We also dissect the artistry behind Browning's 'The Mystic' (1925) and 'The Unknown' (1927), and the wonderful work Criterion did in restoring and presenting these silent films.
Lastly, we revisit the profound themes present in Browning's films, showcasing the darker aspects of human nature and crime. This episode is a celebration of classic horror cinema and a tribute to the artistry of director Tod Browning.

We start with 1931’s classic “The Mummy” starring Boris Karloff and Zita Johann and directed by Karl Freund. Next, we talk about the 1935 science fiction horror classic “The Bride of Frankenstein," starring Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester Colin Clive, and Ernest Thesiger and directed by James Whale. This sequel to the 1931 “Frankenstein” broke new ground with a monster that could talk and that ultimately wanted a wife. Next, we discuss the 1943 romantic horror film “Phantom of the Opera” starring Claude Rains and Susanna Foster and directed by Arthur Rubin. The fourth film we review is the 1954 3D film “Creature from the Black Lagoon” starring Richard Carlson and Julie Adams and directed by Jack Arnold. Screenwriter, producer, and author Julian David Stone joins the podcast to discuss his new novel, IT'S ALIVE, and the fascinating story about the last-minute casting of Frankenstein.
The story involves Bela Lugosi, who was at the height of his popularity having just come off his hit DRACULA (1931), and Boris Karloff, a relatively unknown journeyman actor. And pulling the strings is young 23-year-old Junior Laemmle, head of production at Universal Pictures and son of studio founder Carl Laemmle. Along the way we meet director James Whale, discuss the involvement of Lon Chaney, and explore the backdrop of 1930s Hollywood. It's a fascinating look into the real-life events behind one of the most enduring films and most important developments in the evolution of the Universal Monsters.

GAY PURR-EE (1962) is a forgotten classic of 1960s animation. But the newly remastered Blu-ray release from the Warner Archive has restored the film to the rich, vibrant colors and sound that showcases the original artistry of Chuck Jones and Judy Garland.
Animation and film historian Jerry Beck, film historian and Judy Garland expert John Fricke, and Warner Bros' George Feltenstein join the podcast to discuss the production history of the film, how Judy Garland was brought on board, and why the film has struggled to attain the stature it rightly deserves. We also provide a full review of the stunning new Blu-ray remaster, all of the robust extras, and an explanation of the differences between the film sound and the previously released film soundtrack.
"Gay Purr-ee" was ahead of its time and poorly marketed by UPA and Warner Bros upon its initial release. While this new Warner Archive Blu-ray cannot rectifiy the past, it showcases the artistry and importance of the film for animation fans, Judy Garland devotees, and film collectors everywhere, and will hopefully lead to a newfound appreciation for the brilliance of the film.

My former colleague at Warner Bros and creative executive, Michael Stradford joins the podcast to talk about three iconic films. We start off with SHAFT (1971) and the impact that film had on him as a 10-year-old boy in Cleveland. Then we discuss his first memories of watching ENTER THE DRAGON (1973) and his impressions of Bruce Lee. We reflect on the enduring influence of Bruce Lee and how ENTER THE DRAGON revolutionized martial arts films and Hollywood. We also critique the current Warner Bros 4K release of ENTER THE DRAGON for the 50th anniversary of the film, and what the lack of any new extras says about the current state of physical media at the major studios. This leads to a discussion of the great work being done by many smaller boutique labels who have stepped into the void by creating exceptional box sets and extras. We then transition to a more positive discussion of the fantastic extras Stradford produced for THE BATMAN (2022) release. This is a great example of a studio and filmmaker working in tandem to produce over two hours of high-quality extras. We close with an engaging discussion on Stradford's books on Miles Davis and model Steve Holland, and his newest venture, the graphic novel "Fargo Hell on Wheels."

Ever wondered what's the difference between the Warner Archive and Warner Bros Corporate Archive? We sit down with Warner Bros. archivist Jeff Briggs, and George Feltenstein from the Warner Archive, to discuss the differences and the part each one plays in preserving Warner Bros. film and TV history.
The story originates from how an exhibit at Paris' Pompidou Center led to the birth of the Warner Bros. Corporate Archive and the pivotal role played by Leith Adams. Jeff relates how he was brought onto the team and some of his highlights in working with archival props, costumes, and archival photos. Along the way, we discuss the role of the Academy's new museum, the Jack Warner collection, and the partnership with the USC Film Archive. We also review the evolution of the studio's historic mailroom tour, initiated in the 1940s, and how it has developed into the current studio tour. And George relates some of the recent requests he has received from the press during the 100th Anniversary Celebration.

George Feltenstein joins the podcast to review three new July Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made every effort to impress with its first talking motion picture, setting a new standard for big-budget films and establishing an archetype for decades of movie musicals to follow in "The Broadway Melody." In New York, Eddie and Queenie are attracted to each other, but unwilling to betray her sister, Queenie dates a feckless cad. Now, Hank must sort out the tangle of aspirations and emotions that form this tragic love triangle. George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive announces the April 2023 Blu-ray releases.
Safe in Hell is a 1931 American pre-Code thriller film directed by William A. Wellman (Public Enemy) and starring Dorothy Mackaill. MacKaill gives a phenomenal performance as a woman of ill repute who’s wanted for the murder of a man under accidental circumstances. It’s a horrifying and shocking film, as many Warner Brothers pre-code films are. The previous DVD release of the film came from a 16 mm master, however, this new Blu-ray is taken from a 4K scan of a new 35mm master nitrate print master that was discovered so the film now looks stunning.
One Way Passage is a 1932 American pre-Code romantic film that reunites 2 stars that had arrived at Warner Brothers from Paramount, William Powell and Kay Francis. Powell plays a convicted murderer who meets a terminally ill woman played by Francis in a Hong Kong bar. Aboard the ship on his way to America, Powell spots Francis and over the course of the month-long voyage, they fall in love. This new Blu-ray is taken from a 4K scan from the camera negative.
The Strawberry Blonde (1941) is a delightful romantic comedy set at the turn of the century. directed by Raoul Walsh, it stars James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, and features Rita Hayworth, who was on loan to Warner Brothers for the film. Cagney is irresistible as the leading man who is going to marry his sweetheart de Havilland, but he is seduced somewhat by Hayworth. This is a bona fide classic that has been adored for generations since its release. This Blu-ray is taken from a 4K case scan off of the original camera negative and looks terrific.
Storm Warning is a 1951 American thriller directed by Stuart Heisler and starring Ginger Rogers, Ronald Reagan, Doris Day, and Steve Cochran. Ginger Rogers is a dress company sales representative who goes to visit her sister Doris Day in a little southern town. Inadvertently she witnesses the Ku Klux Klan pulling a guy out of prison and lynching him. Ronald Reagan plays the government agent who is sent to investigate the case and Cochran plays Doris Day’s husband, who is a member of the Klan. This Blu-ray is taken from a 4K scan off the nitrate camera negative with restored picture and sound.
A Lion Is in the Streets is a 1953 American drama directed by Raoul Walsh and starring James Cagney and Barbara Hale as his wife. Cagney plays a charismatic roving peddler who conspires with a local southern political boss to rise to power. His character is loosely based on Huey Long, who was a controversial governor of Louisiana in the late twenties and early thirties. This technicolor film was restored from the 3 technicolor safety negatives and it looks and sounds terrific.

George Feltenstein and Jeff Briggs of Warner Bros join the podcast to discuss one of the most important films in the history of the studio. The political thriller "Confessions of a NAZI SPY," (1939) was the first feature film from a major studio to take on the fascism of Hitler and the Nazi Party. Based on real-life events, the film delves into a spy ring in New York that recruited Americans into the German American Bund. George and Jeff detail the courage of the brothers Warner to take on this material, develop it into a feature film, and the casting of stars Edward G. Robinson, Francis Lederer, George Sanders, and Paul Lukas. Many actors in supporting roles and production crew went uncredited due to fears of reprisals against their familys still in Europe. George also details the remastering of the film for the new Blu-ray and the robust extras that are included. This is a terrific film that is also one of the most important films in the Warner Bros catalog. This episode is part of our 100th year celebration of Warner Bros.

George Feltenstein takes a "look back" at some of the challenges and highlights of 2022 for the Warner Archive in this "Year in Review." Then we discuss the first two Blu-ray releases of January 2023. We start off with the 1928 MGM classic silent film "Our Dancing Daughters" starring Joan Crawford in a star-making role. The music and dancing in this film are a wonderful representation of the era of the flapper and the new restoration from the best elements available now means viewers can see and hear the film in the best condition since its original release. Next, we have a Fritz Lang directed noir western, "Rancho Notorious" (1952), starring Marlene Dietrich as the matron of a criminal hideout called "Chuck-a-Luck." Documentary filmmaker Daniel Griffith joins the podcast to discuss his extras on the IMPRINT Blu-ray release of "Directing Roland Joffe (1984-92)." These four films were released in less than a decade and represent an amazingly creative output in a short amount of time. The films are "The Killing Fields" (1984), "The Mission" (1986), "Fat Man and Little Boy" (1988), and "City of Joy" (1992). Daniel Griffith's 90-minute documentary titled "Prisoners of Our Own History" is an intimate conversation with Roland Joffe discussing the themes and issues of each of these films. The extras alone make this release an important addition to your collection for fans of Roland Joffe and his films.
We also talk about Daniel Griffith's two-hour documentary for the IMPRINT Blu-ray release in September of "The Beast" (1988), directed by Kevin Reynolds (Fandango, Water World). Classic horror expert Tom Weaver joins the podcast for a fun-filled look at some of his favorite Universal Classic Monster films.
Rather than detailing all four of the new to 4K films in the Universal Classic Monsters: Icons of Horror Volume 2 release, Tom picks a favorite scene from each movie and a “why’d they do that” moment. We start with 1931’s classic “The Mummy” starring Boris Karloff and Zita Johann and directed by Karl Freund. Next, we talk about the 1935 science fiction horror classic “The Bride of Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester Colin Clive, and Ernest Thesiger and directed by James Whale. And we wrap up the discussion with a fun-filled rapid-fire segment about all eight of the films in both volumes 1 and 2.

And we discuss the other cast, including then-unknown actress Ursula Andress in one of the most iconic introductions in film history. We also discuss the importance of composer Monty Norman, the opening titles created by Maurice Binder, Peter Hunt's fast-paced editing style, and production designer Ken Adam's incredible sets. We bookend the discussion with a detailed review of the most recent film, “No Time to Die” starring Daniel Craig in his last role as Bond. We review the rocky start of the film and the controversial ending of the movie. We also discuss Craig’s impact on the Bond legacy and some of our favorite stunts and scenes in the films. Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein takes us through the September 2022 Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.
We kick off the discussion with the release of two TV series on Blu-ray. First is the popular comedy “Young Sheldon” season 5, which includes a 100th episode retrospective featurette titled, "Time Flies When You're Having Fun: Young Sheldon at 100." Dave Strohmaier, Director of Film Restorations for Cinerama, and his collaborator Tom March provide a detailed background on the epic restoration of the 1962 Cinerama classic. And the Warner Archives’ George Feltenstein details the history behind the release and the two-disk special edition blu-ray filled with extras.
We start with a review of how Dave’s interest in restoring the Cinerama films led to his first meetings with Warner Home Video, including George Feltenstein, to discuss “How the West Was Won.” This film was found to be in relatively good shape leading to a fairly easy restoration. The re-release of the restored film was hugely successful in both its Cinerama screenings in 2008 and in the Home Video editions. However, previous reviews of “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” film assets stated that they were so badly damaged that it was basically an “un-restorable” film. But advances in digital film restoration, combined with Dave’s work on the technically challenging WINDJAMMER restoration, gave him the confidence to explore the film once again. Starting with meetings in 2018, Dave and George recount the milestones in the collaboration between Cinerama and Warner Bros. And then Dave and Tom explain some of the specific restoration challenges they faced in their epic year-and-a-half spent on the project.

Emmy nominated documentary producer, author, and speaker Steven C. Smith joins the podcast to discuss his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER.
During his illustrious career, composer Max Steiner scored over 300 films and was nominated for 24 Academy Awards. We explore Steiner’s career highlights starting with the groundbreaking King Kong (1933), before detailing his work on the beloved “Gone with the Wind” (1939) and the classic “Casablanca" (1942). We then review Max Steiner’s score on two Warner Archive releases in March of 2022, starting with the 1937 version of “A Star is Born” starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, and the 1942 James Cagney World War II classic “Captains of the Clouds.”
Mr. Smith also touches on Steiner’s positive working relationships with director Michael Curtiz, Warner Bros studio boss Jack Warner, actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, and the relentless David O. Selznick. And we discuss Max Steiner’s tireless efforts on behalf of composer residuals, something that eventually happened toward the end of his career and guaranteed his financial comfort, before briefly touching on Steiner's influence on some contemporary composers and filmmakers.
And finally, Mr. Smith provides his opinion on the recent decision by the Academy of Motion Pictures to not broadcast live the Oscar for “Best Original Score” and what that might mean for the future of the broadcast, and what Max Steiner would have thought of this decision.

Hollywood has a rich legacy of memorable picture cars. And one of the most beloved on television in the last decade is “Baby,” the midnight black 1967 Chevy Impala made famous by the Winchester Brothers - Sam and Dean, in the hit TV show "Supernatural."
For 15 seasons, Jeff Budnick was the Picture Car Coordinator for "Supernatural," and his job was to ensure “Baby” and all of the other cars on the show were ready when needed. In this episode, Jeff takes us through the chance meeting that launched his career on "X-Files," where he had the good fortune to work with highly regarded TV director Kim Manners. Once X-Files ended, Jeff transitioned to the show "Supernatural," beginning with the very first episode. Jeff describes the Impalas that he received from the pilot filming, and how he added to the various show cars over the years. He shares stories from the hectic first season, including his favorite episode, “Route 666.” And he explains what the P.O.S cars are, and details some of them used in the series. Jeff shares personal stories of the crew, how they formed a band called “The Impalas,” and what he has been doing during the time TV production was shut down due to the pandemic. We also go through the challenges in filming the episode "Baby," where the whole episode was filmed from the POV of the car. Jeff then tells us stories of Jensen Ackles's affection for the car, and why he received "Hero car #1." And Jeff explains where the other "Hero" cars ended up. He recounts some of the fan cars used in episodes and events. And in an emotional send-off, Jeff details taking the cars he worked with for 15 seasons to the tractor-trailer for their final journey to the end of the road.

On January 6th, 2022 the film community lost two titans of cinema, director/film historian Peter Bogdanovich and actor/director Sidney Poitier. Recently film historian Constantine Nasr interviewed Peter Bogdanovich for a special feature for the Blu-ray release of Preston Sturges's film, “The Great Moment,” along with Tom Sturges, the son of the director. It may have been one of the last on-camera appearances for Mr. Bogdanovich in his well-accustomed role of film historian and Constantine relates stories from their time together. Constantine also details his thoughts on the career of the ground-breaking actor Sidney Poitier. He reads transcripts from the extras he produced for the DVD releases of the comedies Mr. Poitier directed. And he discusses the current lack of access to some of the films of both Bogdanovich and Poitier.

This is part 2 of "The Origins of Warner Archive" with film historian and Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein. If you haven’t yet listened to part one, I highly recommend that you first listen to episode 15, "The Origins of Warner Archive."
We pick up from the end of that first year and the challenges that lay ahead once the initial batch of good film masters was released. The work of preservation and remastering for DVD was an expensive and laborious task, but ultimately rewarding for the fans. Concurrently, Warner Archive’s pioneering efforts in communicating directly with the fans via social media created a dialogue that informed the preservation and explained to fans the reasoning behind the releases.
On the technology side, the release of the dual-layer DVD-9 allowed for the Warner Archive’s expansion into saturday matinees, television series, and catalog animation, increasing the profits for the fledgling unit. Eventually, the Warner Archive slowly moved into Blu-ray, fulfilling the original vision for high-definition releases. Through it all, the Warner Archive has been run by a small, dedicated team within the larger Warner Home Video division that consistently focused on quality releases that were then embraced by the fans and brought profit to the studio. And finally, George takes a brief look ahead to 2022 and some of the exciting new releases the Warner Archive hopes to bring to the fans.

Filmmaker Constantine Nasr of Rivendell Films joins the podcast to discuss the extras for several classic Horror films.
In December of 2020, the Warner Archive released “The Curse of Frankenstein,” so we review the extras Constantine Nasr created for the special 2-disc release. This Hammer horror classic revitalized the horror genre and led to an explosion of creativity in genre filmmaking worldwide. And it turned Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee into box office stars.
The second half of the podcast delves into the extras Constantine Nasr produced for the Warner Bros adaptation of the Stephen King novel IT, in the two films “IT” and “IT: CHAPTER TWO,” directed by Andy Muschietti and produced by his sister Barbara Muschietti. For the first “IT,” we dive into the intimate extra that explores the bond between the child actors in “The Losers’ Club.” Then we discuss the impressive 2-part documentary “The Summers of IT” and the challenges that went into pulling together this in-depth look into both the child and adult actors on the films from hundreds of hours of on-set footage.
And finally, we touch on Constantine Nasr’s work on the recently released TV classics “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” and the soon-to-be-released “Night Gallery" season 1.

We celebrate the 25th Anniversary release of "Superman: The Animated Series" for the first time on Blu-ray with a discussion with filmmaker Alex Gray about his exclusive special feature extra created for the release.
Alex details for us the challenges posed by the pandemic, and how he re-worked his original creative concepts to accommodate the remote interview restrictions. His pivot to audio interviews with the producers and cast was warmly received and proved to be a brilliant antidote to the pandemic restrictions that led to even more personal stories and remembrances. Alex then worked with the Warner Bros Animation archivist to unearth never-before-used storyboards, character models, and other artwork to blend with the interviews. Personal photos provided by the cast and publicist Gary Miereanu rounded out the visuals. The final touch was an analog score and an audio mix that punctuated the multi-layered final film.
This exceptionally creative extra is the capstone to an arguably must-have new Blu-ray box set for all “Superman: The Animated Series” fans.

Along the way, we’ll discuss our collaboration on the sitcom Two and a Half Men, his anti-career bent in college (it didn’t work out), and stories from his work with Ben Stiller on Tropic Thunder, and Shawn Levy on the Night at the Museum movies.

“Here’s what I do.”
Legendary animation historian Jerry Beck is back for part two of a multi-episode discussion on Looney Tunes.
In this episode, we dive into a fun-filled review of Jerry’s fascinating career curating Looney Tunes titles. He explains the genius he has in hunting and finding and cataloging old cartoons (like all genius, it is actually unexplainable). We try and puzzle out when he and legendary Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein first started curating the Looney Tunes catalog, with little success. But we pick up with the 1996 merger of Warner Bros and Turner, which brought all of the Looney Tunes cartoons from the MGM library back under the WB banner. That allowed Jerry to work with Columbia House for their VHS Looney Toons compilations in the late 1990’s. That research was useful when he began his curation with George Feltenstein on the fan-favorite Looney Tunes Golden Collection, which was an immediate commercial success. That led to five more volumes and then the Blu-ray releases on the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection.
Along the way we make a side journey to a military base for some film research, discuss the value live theatrical screenings have had on Jerry’s instincts for interesting cartoon curation, and learn about Jerry’s passion project (you have to listen to find out).

Legendary Home Entertainment executive George Feltenstein returns to the show to talk about the early days of the Warner Archive. In this episode, George takes us back to his work with Rhino Handmade on small-scale, but profitable soundtrack releases on CD during the late 1990’s. That led to a fateful meeting in 2002 with fellow Warner Bros executive Jim Wuthrich, who was determined to find a way to execute the same concept on the deep Warner Bros film library. That led Mr. Wuthrich to DVD made-on-demand technology, which by 2007 was robust enough that the Warner management team approved the development and launch of a direct-to-consumer service. George’s task was to curate the 100 film releases that would launch the service, a task that grew ever greater when the number was expanded to 150 films soon before launch. On March 23, 2009, The Warner Archive Collection premiered with 150 film titles, to immediate success.
George Feltenstein then takes us through a review of the Warner Archive October 2021 release slate.

"What, no Mickey Mouse?"
Legendary animation historian Jerry Beck joins the podcast for a multi-episode discussion on Looney Tunes.
In this first episode, Jerry provides background on how he got into animation history and the importance of his friendship with the iconic Leonard Maltin. And he provides a brief history of Looney Tunes starting with the character of Bosko, which was influenced by the popularity of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. Mickey’s popularity led moviegoers to pressure the studios for more animation, and led to the popular saying of the day, “what, no Mickey Mouse?” That pressure eventually led to the development of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies to create musical cartoons for theatrical release. Jerry also discusses the development of the Looney Tunes “stars”, including Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and that wacky rabbit Bugs Bunny. He also discusses the impact of key directors including Tex Avery and the voice of so many Looney Tunes characters, Mel Blanc.
Whether you know the history of Looney Tunes already or are a novice, Jerry tells the story in terms we can all enjoy.
