Episode 247 of The Independent Characters witnesses the return of Josh to the show! We continue to have Campbell from the 40kBadcast as our adopted Podcast Partner while Dan is on Paternity leave! (Congrats Dan by the way!)
In this episode Carl, Campbell, and Josh discuss the benefits and drawbacks of two different styles of lists. On one hand, there are those who never, or rarely change anything in their list. While on the other hand, you have those who enjoy changing up their lists every game.
We will go into the pros and cons of each option, and maybe a few ideas on how you might want to adjust your approach.
And yes, that is still new intro music you are hearing at the beginning of the episode. We are going to stick with it for awhile, at least as long as Campbell is guest starring on the show, and see how you folks adapt to it! Be sure to let us know your feedback!
This episode will drop on November 15th.

Episode 246 of The Independent Characters brings onto the roster Campbell McLaughlin of The 40k Badcast fame to join us! While his regular Podcast partner Dan takes some much deserved paternity leave, Campbell will be joining The Independent Characters army roster on a regular basis. We couldn't ask for a better partner!
In this episode, Carl and Campbell talk about the ways that Campaigns, in pretty much any system, fail. We discuss what types of speedbumps campaigns often run into, and how those become dead end streets. Then we take a look at what strategies you can apply to ensure that you campaign is a successful one!
Even with some choice edits, this episode rolls in at about two and a half hours. But we think this is a solid topic of discussion and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it!

Josh will be on a (hopefully) short hiatus from the show. In the meantime we will have a rotating cast of guest hosts as we continue to move forward. Unfortunately, this puts our video efforts temporarily on hold (except for when we do remote interviews). However, the shows audio content continues! This episode has Carl joined by friend, local friendly game store owner, and sponsor, Skye Herrick of Herrick Games and Hobbies! After our usual hobby progress and games played section, we move on to our main topic which seeks to answer the question, "How do you create and sustain a positive gaming community?" With Skye joining us, we have some interesting insight into how the answer to that question may differ for a business as opposed to someone running a club or just local group of friends. Episode 221 of The Independent Characters takes a look at some of our favorite models across the line of Games Workshop support for the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
It isn't easy picking a favorite anything as we find out. It's like trying to decide what your favorite song is, or favorite movie. Sure it sounds simple at first, but then if you are forced to ruthlessly prioritize your choices, that's where it becomes really difficult.
The models that represent the Warhammer 40,000 universe are as diverse as they are lovely. We try to narrow down our favorite models in this discussion and spend some time explaining why our biased opinion is the right one.
It was meant to be a light hearted take on some of the best aspects of the game, but it turned into a demanding breakdown to pick our favorite representative models. That being said, we had a great time recording this episode, and we hope you enjoy it half as much as we did bringing it to you!

I want to thank Jody and Justin for joining us this episode. Their commitment to the show should not go unmentioned. We really hope you enjoy this episode and we are working to get back on some semblance of a schedule for you.
One last thing - during the show we misspeak about the "Sworn Guardians" rule for Adeptus Custodes. In the show we state that a unit with this ability controls an objective even if outnumbered. However, what we didn't read was the second part of the rule which states that if a unit has a similar rule (Objective Secured really), then "the objective marker is controlled by the player who has the most models within range of it as normal." We speak with most of the members of our gaming group, local friends, and others to get their insight on what were the highlights, lowlights, and thoughts on plans for the future of Games Workshop.
Probably our longest, and last episode of the year - this one clocks in at around four whopping hours!
So sit back and get some hobby progress done while we fill your ears with our final thoughts of 2019. Happy New Year to all! May it be better for you than the last year, and may all your hobby dreams (as well as others we suppose) come true!

Episode 198 of The Independent Characters is a return to an Extended Warrior Lodge! Unfortunately, Discord was having some issues with Google today and people could not log into Discord servers around the world. This prevented us from pulling in any live listeners during our live Twitch broadcast unfortunately. That's ok though, we WILL do this again!
Carl is joined by Justin, Jody, and Josh... the three J's all wearing different name tags just to mess things up further! We have some great discussion and a ton of fun recording. I think it comes through.
It's a fantastic episode, and we hope you enjoy it!

After all of that great content, we have an interview with Kat and Caleb of CK Studios, talking about their experience teaching airbrushing at Warhammer World and what they have coming up for 2020.
So sit back and get some hobby progress done while we talk all about Knights in 40k.

Episode 194 of The Independent Characters is a bit of a train wreck. We aren't going to lie.
When Carl was going to be doing so much traveling in September, we expected that he would be able to fit in a couple of interviews. Justin Hill, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, John French, maybe even Robin Cruddace. However, delayed flights, jetlag, expired Drivers licenses... all kinds of things conspired against him to toss those plans right out the window.
In the end we wound up with a great interview (with mediocre sound quality in Bugman's Bar) with Justin Hill and then an extensive Hobby Progress and rambling intro section with Jody and Carl. This is NOT our strongest showing, but we do think it IS a fun episode. It's just not particularly well structured.
Our next episode will have us back on track and back on schedule. No more traveling and just a lot of gaming. But until then we hope this episode tides you over and you enjoy it as much as we did recording it!

Episode 193 of The Independent Characters arrives delayed by about two days since Carl had to deal with majore work issues all weekend.
This episode we are discussing how to get some extra life out of all of your old hobby publications. Be they old campaign materials, old codexes, old mission books, or just old anything - we discuss ideas for how you can look at these things at the changing of an edition and still make them useful in your gaming experience!
This episode again comes in at about two and a half hours. We know folks like the longer ones and we have some things coming up which are going to fill your time at great length. But this is a solid two hours of content and discussion... and it will also be of value to how long you get to use all that old stuff you bought.
Carl and Justin are heading off to the NOVA Open after this and the month of September is incredibly busy with travel and other activities, but we will fit in new episodes where we can. Expect a lot of interviews with people in the industry and some other surprises coming up. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 164 of The Independent Characters is late. Super late in fact. Let us explain:
As you will hear in this episode we have an interview with Steel Wool - a video game company working on a great new game for Warhammer 40k. Unfortunately, we also talked a lot about this interview and its contents. Their announcement was subsequently delayed due to… reasons. As a result, we could not release the episode or even just remove the interview and release it on time, and in fact released it out of order (Episode 165 dropped a few days ago).
We apologize for the delay and we have learned our lesson to never again tie an episode to a PR Announcement of a release!
So with that out of the way, let’s talk about what this episode actually contains! First we have a fairly long and meandering Hobby Progress discussion which also weighs in on a few new announcements from GW and other thoughts and ideas about the community.
We then move into our (delayed) interview with Steel Wool about their new Betrayal at Calth video game! Trust us when we tell you that this thing is VERY cool. Listen to the interview and you will see why.
We then have an interview with returning guests Kat and Caleb of CK Studios. They have some amazing events coming up and we get some insight into what they have going on.
Last but certainly not least, we have a short discussion about our home campaign The Permutation of Arasys, which we have been playing through. We talk about the structure of the campaign, how it is going so far, and what our expectations are going forward.
Again we apologize for the delays in releasing the show, but we really hope you enjoy what we have for you.

Episode 165 of The Independent Characters is a super-sized, nearly four hour episode! Additionally, we have a couple of AMAZING interviews. The first is with Jes Bickham of the Warhammer 40k Design Studio! We ask him a bunch of questions around the development of the game and gain some insights into what the thinking was on many of the questions that have arisen since it’s release. THEN we talk to Dave Taylor, who tells us all about the NOVA Open Charitable Foundations efforts to raise money for those in need, and how you can get a chance to win some amazing prizes by helping out.

Episode 157 of The Independent Characters provides you with our further impressions of The New Warhammer 40,000! (aka: 8th Edition)
Now that we have had time to play many, many games of The New Warhammer 40,000, we feel a little more qualified to give you our opinions on the game. Recently someone stated on our Facebook page that it seems as though all we do is talk about how much we love Games Workshop. Well if you are that person, and that bothers you, you may want to skip this episode.
Once we go through the regular Hobby Progress and Games Played sections, we get down to our continuing discussion of the game, the changes, and what we think it all means. Then, in keeping with the show spirit of making you feel like a part of our gaming group, we pull in four other players from our group and have some discussion with them about their opinions and thoughts on the game. All in all it makes for some pretty interesting and entertaining discussion.
Then, just when you think it's over, we have an interview with painter, artist, renaissance man, Caleb Wissenback. Caleb has just passed over to Carl the Chaos Reaver Titan he was commissioned to paint, and the results are incredible! So incredible, we brought Caleb on to share how the whole process worked.
We also have some discussion about kicking Adan off the show. You will have to listen to find out why.
We hope you enjoy the show!

Episode 156 of The Independent Characters continues to explore our early impressions of The New Warhammer 40,000, but the main focus of the show is about how to bring new players into the game.
With the release of the new edition, the time couldn't be more perfect for people to join the community. The game is easier to learn than ever, but contains enough depth that older players are returning in droves. After a fairly long hobby progress section, we go over some thoughts and ideas on what you can do to help ease people into playing Warhammer 40,000 and not scare them off!

Episode 154 of the Independent Characters is all about Shadow Wars: Armageddon! Ok well maybe not ENTIRELY about SW:A, we have a bunch of 8th edition discussion in here as well as a couple of great interviews!
Our first interview, is with the Terrafirmer! They have a brilliant gaming table product that you are going to want to hear about and see (See show notes links below!)
We then launch into a discussion about Shadow Wars: Armageddon. A tremendous offering from Games Workshop, where the initial run of boxes and rule books sold out too fast! We go into the background the game is based on, some of its historical relation to Necromunda, and then talk about the rules and campaign system a bit.
We then launch into an interview with Matei Lungu (Or Matt as he is known!) about the Warhammer 40k scene in Bucharest, Romania. This is hopefully the first in an ongoing segment titled Warhammer 40k: Around the World, in which we talk to different people from around the world and compare similarities and differences to their gaming scene.
As a side note, Carl has been sidelined with some family issues and so we recognize some of the links didn’t make it into the show notes that should be there. We will add those in the next day or so on the Facebook page. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 150 of The Independent Characters is all about dealing with change in the hobby.
With 8th edition Warhammer 40,000 right around the corner we are sure to see some people get upset about many of the changes. We talk about some good ideas for how to deal with the upcoming upheaval. We start by taking a look back through changes we saw from 5th to 6th and 7th edition and try to put some perspective around how some changes, that were thought to be catastrophic to the game at the time, really panned out.
Building upon this perspective, we talk a bit about good strategies for dealing with change from the point of view of those who deal with this kind of thing on a regular basis. Then we launch into a discussion about what changes we might see ported over from Age of Sigmar into Warhammer 40,000 with this new edition.

Episode 145 of The Independent Characters takes a close look at conflicts within gaming groups. This isn’t a show about how to deal with ‘that guy’ at a tournament, but an episode we hope helps address problems in groups that have long standing relationships.
We have all witnessed poor behavior while gaming. However, when it is friends or communities impacted by this type of behavior when do you say something? And more importantly what do you say? Hopefully this episode shines some light on a complex and difficult topic.
We are lucky enough to get Jason Mullins from the Sons of Heresy Podcast onboard to talk with us about the main topic of the show as well! Make sure you check out his new show.
We also have two quick interviews. The first with Caleb and Kat of CK Studios. This is followed up by an interview with Adam ‘Loopy’ Fasoldt from the Masters of The Forge Podcast. Episode 136 focuses on what it takes for your submissions to Black Library to get noticed. Who knows, maybe you could be the next great Black Library author! To help us out with this we have brought in three experts:
Guy Haley is probably one of the most prolific authors in Black Library to date. He writes more short stories and novels than just about any other author today. He also provides us a wealth of information on what the "Do's and Dont's" are when submitting material or pitching ideas, from an experienced writers perspective.
We also speak with Justin Hill, one of the newer authors for Black Library (but by no means a new author!) about his experience in getting his foot in the door to write Warhammer 40k fiction.
And finally we speak to the legend himself, Nick Kyme. Not only an author for Black Library, but first and foremost, one of the editors behind the portal that Ahriman himself searches for! As an editor, he and his peers are the literal gatekeepers to what does and does not get published by Black Library. He provides a wealth of information about what should go into your pitch for a story, and more importantly what should NOT go into it!

We cover every aspect of Warhammer 40k releases, from Games-Workshop, Forge World, Black Library, Fantasy Flight Games and others. So prepare yourself, because this is going to be a long ride.
And just when you think it couldn't get any more incredible, Loopy from Masters of The Forge, and the master of our hearts, joins Carl to announce the winners of the 2014 Hobby Progress challenge!

Whether you want to create (or leverage!) the ultimate 40k Tournament Missions, or make a really exciting and fun narrative mission for your event or friends, this is the episode you want to listen to
We enlist aid from some of the best in the tournament scene at the moment to delve into their different (but somewhat similar) philosophies on mission design and what makes for a balanced experience. Reece Robbins (of The Las Vegas Open and Frontline Gaming) and Mike Brandt (of the NOVA Open and NOVA Open Charitable Foundatin) both join us to give us some insight into how the missions for their respective events were developed.
As usual we have our Hobby Progress and games played, which is quite extensive as we participated in a few events over this period of time!

We go inside the background, rules, supplements and excitement of the youngest race in the Warhammer 40k Universe!
We will discuss our experiences playing the Tau and how they perform on the tabletop in comparison to their backstory. To help us through all of this, we have brought in Jason McCurry of our local gaming group. Tau were his first army, and although he isn't actively playing them right now, he helps walk us through the confusion of marker drones, and ethereals!

We talk about how she has gotten into 40k, what appeals to her about it, and Justin offers her some advice on playing. This was originally intended to be released as bonus content while Carl was on vacation, but we held on to it until now.

We follow all of that up with two interviews. One with Dave of Dave Paints. This is the commission painter who has painted Carls wifes Eldar. We spend time discussing the mechanics of the Legions represented in this book as well as an overview of the Titan Legions involved and the Mechanicus forces.
Then we leap over to discuss the two (yes we said two!) different campaign styles of play that are in this book. Anything that has us playing the game in different ways strikes our interest and this is no exception!

Geoff joins Carl for this episode and we will find out if he has completed any hobby progress in the intervening time since Episode 100 as well...

Episode 99 of The Independent Characters focuses on our second "Show of Force" episode. This time we are discussing The Unforgiven. We go into great detail about many aspects of the Dark Angels army and how Games Workshop supports them.
We have taken feedback from our previous Show of Force episode and tried to incorporate some of that into this episode as well. Even taking all of that into account - we realize some things we can do to improve this format even further for the next time!
We want to thank Ken Fritts for joining us for this episode, his knowledge and insight into The Dark Angels was very helpful and we couldn't have done it without him. Additionally, we owe a big thank you to Gav Thorpe, who took time out of his busy schedule (and even put up with our missed appointment quite graciously!) to talk to us about his Legacy of Caliban series, and a look at The Dark Angels through a Black Library authors eyes.
The epsiode starts off with a huge amount of Hobby Progress. Well, since we include purchases in our "Hobby Progress" we think you can see where this may be going...

Episode 97 was supposed to be about how assembling large Forge World models is really not as difficult as you think it might be. However, occasionally a show goes in a direction you didn't expect. What we ended up with is a deep dive into the world of Extreme Model Building!
Tim has a background in assembling model cars and trains, but his love of assembling complicated projects has now moved over into the Forge World arena. He is the individual responsible for the incredible assembly work done on Carls Titan and Thunderhawk.
We thought bringing Tim on the show would show people how they shouldn't be intimidated by these large (and expensive) models, however we didn't quite know what we were in for. We think however, you will find some great ideas in this episode and will gain an appreciation for just how passionate some people are about this hobby!
In addition to our regular Workbench and Tabletop discussion, we also present you with The Warrior Lodge #10. Joining us this time around are Ian (aka Crimson Fist Ian), Jason, and Josh (aka Santa Cruz Josh) to tackle a number of topics we have gathered for you.
Last, but not least, we have a quick interview with Teras of Geek Nation Tours. He comes on to talk about Warhammer World (You might have heard Carl went there) and how he can help you get there soon! Sometimes you have to just sit back and enjoy the journey, not necessarily the destination! We hope you enjoy Episode 97 of The Independent Characters.

Episode 96 of The Independent Characters introduces our new special named Show of Force. This Episode Show of Force covers the Veterans of The Long War. To help us out we bring in John French, Black Library author of Ahriman: Exile (and the upcoming Ahriman: Sorcerer) to help us understand this complex villain and the nature of Chaos itself. Additionally, we have input from Alan Dehesa, a tournament Chaos Space Marine player who has placed well at some of the most challenging events around, to give us some insight into how he makes this army perform.
We have the usual Workbench and Games Played segments, but of course the real "meat" of this episode is our coverage. This is our first such episode and we are very interested in your feedback before we move into the next one (3 to 4 episodes from now).

Episode 85 is right around the corner and with this one, we fill our third chair with regular favorite guest Adan. But what is this episode all about
The game has been changing. The introduction of 6th edition has been met with quite a lot of criticism from the tournament scene over the last year. The fast changing release of codexes and codex expansions is quickly changing the face of the game, preventing any one build or codex from maintaining a lead over another for long.
We explore the impact of how this is changing not only the tournament scene, but how this is having an impact on purchasing models & armies for non-tournament gamers, as well as how it is effecting retailers.
We also take an in depth look at the new Imperial Armour Apocalypse released by Forge World as well as the new release of Apocalypse Warzone: Damnos by Games-Workshop.
Not only that, we have an interesting interview for you from Erasmus, the driving force behind the video The Lord Inquisitor, which has the blessing of Games Workshop and the participation of Aaron Dembski-Bowden.
So sit back. Relax. And enjoy Episode 85 of The Independent Characters.
