🍽️ Ever made the "perfect" meal for your toddler only to watch it land on the floor? In this episode, pediatrician Dr. Cathryn shares why toddler eating patterns are totally normal, even when they feel chaotic.
Key takeaways:
• Growth explains everything: Children's growth slows down naturally after year one. Some days they'll eat everything, others barely anything – and that's perfectly fine as long as they are growing well! Understanding this pattern helps parents stress less about daily food battles.
• It's all about control: Mealtime behavior is often your toddler's way of showing independence. Dr. Cathryn shares her "cho-cho" story from Grenada to help parents see food from their toddler's perspective.
• Different eating styles: Know if you have an "eat anything" adventurous eater, "maybe not" cautious eater, or the common "might like it" in-between eater. Understanding your child's natural style makes mealtimes smoother.

Ever find yourself starting calm, only to snap after your toddler ignores you again and again? It happens to the best of us—but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Dr. Cathryn is here to show you how to break the calm-snap cycle and manage tough toddler moments with patience and connection.
**3 Key Points to Break the Calm-Snap Cycle:**
✔️ The Power Pause:** When you feel frustration rising, take a quick pause. Breathe, and remind yourself that your toddler is just acting their age. This simple break can stop you from snapping.
✔️ Mindset Shift:** Tantrums are normal and part of healthy development. Instead of seeing them as a sign your child is misbehaving, recognize they’re struggling and need your help to regulate.
✔️ Grounding Techniques:** In the moment, focus on something tangible like your feet pressing into the ground. This practice helps you stay present and calm during challenging behaviors.

Is bedtime becoming a nightly struggle? If your child seems to be battling sleep, it’s not because they’re being difficult. In this episode, we dive into the real reasons kids resist bedtime and how to make evenings smoother for everyone.
Key takeaways:
✔️ Separation Anxiety: Toddlers often feel anxious about being apart from you at bedtime, which leads to stalling tactics like asking for one more story. I share how empathy and clear boundaries can help your child feel secure and ready for sleep.
✔️ Bedtime Fears: Nighttime fears are common in toddlers and can make settling down hard. Learn how to acknowledge your child’s fears and provide comfort without getting stuck in an extended bedtime routine.
✔️ Timing Matters: Missing your child’s natural sleep window can lead to overtiredness, making it harder for them to fall asleep. Discover why an early bedtime works best and how to avoid the “second wind.”

Ever wonder why your toddler keeps hitting, even though you’ve told them it’s not okay a million times? In this episode, I explain the real reasons behind toddler hitting and how you can respond without losing your cool. It’s all about guiding them with kindness, understanding, and big-hearted boundaries.
Here are a few of the must-know insights from today’s episode:
- Toddlers are not mini-adults: Their brains are still developing, and hitting is often just a result of frustration or poor impulse control!
- Negative attention is still attention: They’ll take whatever interaction they can get. Respond calmly to avoid reinforcing the behavior.
- Hitting is their way of communicating: Those little hands sometimes fly when words fail. Put on your detective hat and look for the unmet need behind the behavior.

In this episode of the Toddlers Made Easy podcast, Dr. Cathryn explores how to offer choices to toddlers in a way that empowers them without overwhelming them. She discusses the importance of allowing toddlers to make decisions, which helps foster independence, reduce power struggles, and build confidence.
However, Dr. Cathryn also highlights when choices should be avoided, such as during safety concerns, overwhelming transitions, or times of stress, tiredness, or hunger.
Offering too many options or ambiguous choices can cause frustration. Dr. Cathryn shares practical tips, such as keeping choices simple and ensuring both options are acceptable, to help parents navigate this tricky territory.
Dr. Cathryn also addresses the emotional development of toddlers, explaining why they may struggle with their decisions and react unexpectedly, and emphasizes the importance of balancing choices with boundaries. Shyness isn't a flaw—it's a strength. Some kids need time to warm up, and that's okay! Instead of pushing them to be outgoing, let's support their quiet confidence. Encourage them to take things at their own pace and validate their feelings. Shy kids can be brave too—just in their own way. 🌟

In this episode, we explore the best ways to support your child through potty training without rushing or coaxing. With over 35 years of experience, I recommend a relaxed, zero-pressure approach. While some kids can learn in a weekend, pushing kids can lead to issues like constipation, behavioral problems, and stress.
Key Takeaways:
- Zero-Pressure Approach: Trust that your child will learn when they’re ready. Potty training is about the process, not just the end goal.
- Unconditional Trust: Your child senses your emotions. By trusting their ability to learn, you boost their confidence and independence.
- Big-Hearted Communication: If you’ve been pressuring your child, acknowledge it and reassure them they’ll use the potty when they’re ready.
- Pre-Potty Training: Introduce the potty without expectations, allowing your child to explore it on their own terms. This sets the stage for a smoother transition.

Welcome! I’m Dr. Cathryn, pediatrician with 35 years of experience and mom of 4. This week, we dive into the art of calming a tantrum without saying a word. Timing and approach are key—intervene too soon or in the wrong way, and you might unintentionally escalate the situation. By staying calm, you share that calm with your child, guiding them through their big emotions.
Key Takeaways:
- Anatomy of a Tantrum: Anger dominates early on, but as the tantrum subsides, sadness takes over—this is your moment to step in.
- Empathy Over Intervention: Understanding your child’s perspective helps de-escalate the situation. Sometimes, all they need is your calm presence, not words.
- Examples in Action: Whether it’s a grocery store meltdown or a bedtime battle, staying silent and present can help tantrums pass more quickly.
- Prolonging Factors: Eye-rolling, logic, and bribes can backfire. Stay patient and trust the process.
Remember, tantrums are opportunities for connection. If you struggle with finding the right words during tough moments, check out my guide, *Words That Work*, featuring 200 scripts to handle any challenge. The link is in the show notes.
Thanks for tuning in—see you next week!

Starting school can be tough, with a mix of nerves, excitement, and fear. I’ve been there—my youngest had a hard time with drop-offs, but a simple change made all the difference.
Here are some tips to ease the transition:
- Prepare Ahead: Pick out school clothes and pack lunches the night before. Let your child choose their outfit to avoid morning conflicts.
- Ease into Routine: Prep your child on what to expect and stick to bedtime around 7:30-8:30 pm.
- Calm Mornings: Wake up earlier to manage jitters and leave calmly.
- Handle Separation Anxiety: Validate feelings with statements like, “It’s OK to cry. I’ll be back after naptime.” Avoid telling them not to cry or sneaking away.
- Buddy System: If possible, drop off with a school friend to ease the transition.
- Lunch Box Notes: A sweet reminder of home can be comforting.
- After-School Tips: Be welcoming and offer a snack to prevent tantrums. Allow some flexibility with routines.
For more practical advice, check out my guide Words That Work: 200 Scripts for Tricky Toddler Moments. Perfecting what to say can make all the difference.

Dr. Cathryn tackles the challenging topic of toddler hitting with a compassionate, big-hearted approach. We explore the various reasons behind this common behavior and introduce the E.A.S.Y. method—a practical, step-by-step strategy to help parents respond effectively. The episode breaks down each component of the method:
• E - Evaluate: Create a pause to calm your own nervous system
• A - Acknowledge: Verbalize what you think your child is feeling
• S - Stick to boundaries: Clearly state the rule about hitting
• Y - Yes, shift to something the child can do: Offer an alternative activity
We also discuss the importance of understanding toddlers' developmental stages, the value of consistent guidance, and additional tips for supporting emotional development.
This episode offers parents a nurturing way to address hitting while strengthening their bond with their child and fostering emotional intelligence, ultimately laying the foundation for healthy self-image and interactions throughout their child's life.

In this episode, we dive into the essential topic of helping children manage disappointment and build frustration tolerance. Sharing personal stories, including a time when my daughter bravely tried out for a boys' soccer team and another when my son lost a baseball game, we explore the importance of allowing kids to experience their emotions fully. Instead of shielding them from discomfort, we should validate their feelings, empathize, and provide support without immediately trying to fix the situation. By doing so, we help our children develop resilience and the skills needed to navigate life's challenges.
Tune in for practical tips on how to respond thoughtfully to your child's frustration and why it's crucial to let them feel their emotions while ensuring they don't face them alone. Plus, stay tuned for some exciting news coming up next week!

If this sounds like you: "I love Toddlers Made Easy." <-- Please consider rating and reviewing my show! This helps me support more parents -- just like you.
In this episode of "Toddlers Made Easy," we're diving into the EASY method—a transformative technique to help you navigate toddler tantrums with grace and effectiveness. Inspired by my own experiences as a pediatrician and a mom, EASY is all about creating a calm and connected approach to those challenging moments.
Let’s break it down:
**E**valuate: Take a power pause to create space between your child’s behavior and your reaction. Use deep breathing or grounding techniques to calm your nervous system.
**A**cknowledge Feelings: Show your child that you understand their emotions. A simple acknowledgment like, "You’re upset because you wanted that toy," makes them feel seen and valued.
**S**tick to Boundaries: This is where the real work happens. Being gentle is important, but so is being firm. Setting clear, consistent boundaries helps your child feel safe and learn what's acceptable.
**Y**es: Pivot to a positive yes. It’s not about giving in, but about teaching what they can do instead. “You can’t play with Joey’s truck, but you can choose another toy.”
We’ll see this in action with real-life examples, like how Lily’s hitting at daycare was managed with EASY, leading to a week without incidents. Or handling bedtime slaps with calm acknowledgment, firm boundaries, and offering choices.
Remember, discipline at this age is about teaching, not punishment. Toddlers need guidance and support, not fear and shame. Implementing EASY helps them develop the skills they need to manage their impulses and emotions.
Join us to learn more about this compassionate approach to parenting and become the parent you’ve always wanted to be.

In this episode of Toddlers Made Easy, we explore effective strategies to prevent and manage picky eating in toddlers. Understanding toddler behavior is key, as food choices become a primary area of autonomy. How you respond to this natural pickiness can influence whether it becomes an entrenched habit.
We delve into the concept of the Fussy Food Loop, highlighting how to avoid common reactions that may worsen picky eating. From a developmental perspective, babies are generally open to various foods, while toddlers' growth and cognitive changes can lead to unpredictable eating habits.
A Big-Hearted Interpretation (BHI) encourages looking at mealtime from your toddler's perspective. Trusting and empowering your child, rather than pressuring them, is crucial. We discuss the importance of using positive language to encourage trying new foods and avoiding the pitfalls of becoming a short-order cook.
Recognizing red flags is essential, as picky eating might sometimes indicate a more serious issue, such as poor weight gain or developmental concerns.
For more strategies and support, check out the Toddlers Made Easy course, linked in the show notes. Remember, you don’t have to be a perfect parent to raise an awesome kid.

Dr Cathryn is tackling a topic that might seem simple but is actually a big deal for little ones: understanding time.
Hear about Marcus, a 3.5-year-old who loves the swings but struggles when it's time to leave. Why? Because his mom is giving a warning like this: “We’re leaving in 5 minutes.”
Kids can't see or touch time, so they don't understand it like adults do. But as they grow, they start to get it through routines and daily patterns.
Today’s Tips:
1. Use Sequences: Tell your child, "First park, then lunch, then playdate." It helps them understand the order of events.
2. Visual Timers: These show how much time is left in a way kids can see.
3. Sand Timers: A simple tool that helps kids see time passing.
4. OK WAKE UP Clocks: Helps your child know when it's okay to get out of bed by showing a green light.
5. Bonus Tip: Use calendars or a bead necklace to countdown to special days.

Even though we understand that tantrums are a normal part of a child's development, these moments can still make us feel incredibly uneasy. There's also an innate discomfort with displaying strong emotions in public, a societal pressure to keep everything looking 'perfect'.

Is your toddler’s desire to delay dozing off driving you to distraction?
Bedtime fears usually start at around two years and may last several years. They happen very commonly because children spend their days in imaginative play, and it is tough for them to turn that off at bedtime.
Even though there are many valid reasons for your toddler to fight at bedtime, you still need a chance to get some rest. Your needs matter and you have less to give when you need to recharge. So there is no need to feel guilty about wanting your child to sleep so you can take some time for yourself.
In this episode, I talk about bedtime fears and how to overcome them. I go into why children have those fears and explain why they tend to happen from a developmental perspective.
Stay tuned to learn how to lovingly, respectfully, and effectively manage your toddler’s bedtime fears.
Five things likely to contribute to your toddler’s bedtime fears:

Join Dr. Cathryn in this episode as she guides you through handling tough toddler moments with calmness and empathy. Learn to see past the surface behavior and understand your child's emotions. For example, if your toddler says "I hate the baby", instead of ignoring these feelings, acknowledge and understand them. Think about how you feel when someone dismisses your bad day; your child needs to feel heard just like you do. And teach them to express big emotions with words, not actions.
Keep in mind, it's completely natural for toddlers to go through a wide spectrum of emotions. The key is in how they convey these feelings. In today’s discussion, we’re zeroing in on addressing the emotional side of handling challenging behaviors. Next week, we'll shift our focus to the behavioral side – setting boundaries and maintaining them effectively.

Question 1: Dealing with False Accusations
- A parent shares concern about their 2.5-year-old falsely claiming to be hit by them.
Answer: Understand that toddlers often blur fantasy and reality. It's their way of expressing discomfort with parental disapproval. Focus on the underlying emotions rather than the details, and reassure them with love and understanding.
Question 2: Preparing for a New Sibling
- A parent asks for advice on their toddler who doesn’t want a new sibling.
Answer: Early in the pregnancy, it's okay to wait before discussing the new sibling. When the time comes, involve your toddler in preparations. Acknowledge their mixed feelings about growing up and becoming a big sister while allowing them to still feel like your baby.
Question 3: Handling Defiance and Aggression
- Concerns about a nearly 3-year-old showing defiance and occasional aggression.
Answer: This behavior is a part of testing limits. Use the EASY approach: Evaluate your calmness, Acknowledge feelings, Set boundaries, and offer Yes alternatives. Focus on positive redirection.
Question 4: Potty Training Challenges
- A parent struggles with their 3.5-year-old's reluctance to start potty training.
Answer: Pause the potty training discussion for a while. Model toilet use, focus on pre-potty skills, and choose a start date for training. Make the bathroom environment fun and inviting. Use a no-pressure approach and understand the child's perspective.

Navigating picky eating in toddlers is a common challenge rooted in their developmental journey toward food independence and exploration of tastes.
To ease this phase, it's crucial to avoid pressuring a toddler to eat and instead adopt a relaxed approach. Create a positive mealtime atmosphere by emphasizing enjoyable family gatherings, focusing on the meal experience over food, and keeping mealtimes technology-free for bonding. Steer clear of pressure-inducing phrases and avoid labeling foods as 'good' or 'bad.'
Encouraging children to make some food choices can fulfill their need for independence, and remember that your role is to decide what, where, and when they eat while a child determines how much they eat. Involving kids in meal planning, cooking, and grocery shopping can engage them with food.
Patience is key, as changes in eating habits take time. If picky eating is accompanied by significant behavioral challenges, consulting a doctor is advisable.
Actionable takeaways:
- Avoid pressuring kids to eat.
- Create a positive mealtime atmosphere.
- Refrain from using pressure-inducing phrases.
- Encourage children to make food choices.
- Involve kids in meal planning and cooking.

In this episode, we explored the common belief that sugar causes hyperactivity in children. We delved into the origins of this myth, tracing it back to Dr. Ben Feingold's 1975 book "Why Your Child Is Hyperactive." The episode unpacked the historical context of the 1970s, when concerns over ADHD medications like Ritalin were rising, making the idea of dietary control over hyperactivity attractive to parents.
Key points covered include:
Early Studies:
Initial research suggests a link between sugar intake, insulin production, adrenaline boost, and hyperactivity.
Pivotal 1994 Study:
A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found no connection between sugar consumption and changes in children's behavior or cognitive functions.
Continued Belief in the Myth:
Despite the scientific evidence, the persistence of the sugar-high myth.
Importance of a Balanced Diet:
Emphasizing the benefits of limiting sugar intake for overall health, beyond behavior management.

From wishful thinking to pretend play, toddlers’ big imaginations often blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality. Picture this: Mom sees two and a half year old Johnny squirming and doing the I need to go pee dance. So she tells him to go sit on the potty. Johnny ignores his mom and a minute later he pees in his pants. Needless to say, Johnny's mom was irritated.
Does this sound at all familiar? Pressuring a child to use the potty, well, it often backfires. It's like trying to brush a toddler's teeth while they clamp their mouth shut. Let's face it, nobody likes being forced or pressured into anything and potty training is no exception. So is a parent led approach to potty training really the most effective way to say goodbye to diapers? Let’s consider the power of a no pressure approach, why it's the game changer parents need, and how it empowers our little ones to conquer the potty journey!

Are you a big fan of the dentist??
Imagine for a moment you’re heading off to the dentist. Maybe you're thinking, yikes. You're not exactly thrilled, but you deal with it because you know it's important. Now for a toddler, that same feeling can come up every time they are asked to brush their teeth. It's like going to the dentist, but twice a day, every day.
Our little powerhouses are always on a mission to stake their claim to independence. Asking a toddler to brush their teeth can seem like we're infringing on their newfound autonomy. And just when you thought navigating this couldn't get any more challenging, we add bedtime into the equation at the end of the day.
So what’s the secret sauce to making this a smooth and even enjoyable experience for you and your toddler?? I’ve got a few strategies for you to take on tooth brushing like a champ!

When you were learning to drive a car, did you just show up on the day of the exam?
No, you practiced and prepared for it in stages. Turns out the same approach works with potty training too. We know that prepping a child for changes or events can significantly reduce stress and increase coping skills. But we ignore or forget about this concept when it comes to potty training, which is probably one of the most significant events in a child's early life! Typically we tell our kids, “Okay today we are going to start potty training!” Or maybe we prep them a day or two before. But there is so much more to be done to make potty training easier for your child, and for you! Pre-potty training creates a smoother, easier, and really less stressful experience. If you are approaching the potty training stage, then grab a notebook pen, and let’s dive in!

After working as a pediatrician for more than a quarter of a century, I have learned many big lessons. One of which is that parents are naturally big-hearted. They're loving, kind, and willing to do just about anything when it comes to their kids.
So what does it mean to parent with a big heart? This approach is particularly important for toddlers. When I think of big-hearted parenting, I imagine shedding the negative lens of the terrible twos, and instead, embracing toddlers as incredible, wonderfully unique little individuals who require our support, guidance, and understanding.
Let’s dive into big-hearted parenting together and help our children feel seen, heard, understood, and valued!

Parents often reach out to me concerned about their child's challenging behaviors, such as hitting, throwing toys, and not listening. They wonder how to manage these behaviors while still respecting their child and setting boundaries. If this sounds like you, then know you aren’t alone! This is a very common concern! In this episode, we are going to explore the concept of emotional vitamins and their importance in parenting.
When we focus solely on fixing behavior problems, we miss the opportunity to prevent these situations from happening again. Emotional vitamins are small acts of love and kindness that make children feel seen, heard, understood, and valued. They contribute to good behavior by meeting the emotional need for love and creating a strong emotional foundation between you and your child. Emotional vitamins could be physical touch, kind and loving words, or quality together time.
By incorporating these gestures into daily life, we can strengthen our bond with our children, boost their self-esteem, and create a loving and secure attachment. Remember, even the little things matter the most when it comes to emotional vitamins!

Would you believe me if I said that toddlers are the most misunderstood people on the planet?
In this episode, we’re uncovering the common misconceptions parents have about toddlers' abilities to share, control their emotions, and manage their impulses. Let’s debunk unrealistic expectations and challenge the negative label often associated with the "Terrible Twos" phase. When we remember the vulnerability and natural curiosity of toddlers, we can learn to approach them with patience and compassion, just like we did when they were babies. It's time to break free from old parenting styles and embrace new approaches that truly align with our values and nurture the well-being of our children.
Let's take a step towards building stronger connections and fostering personal growth for both us and our toddlers!

Feel like your toddler is acting out, or throwing more fits than normal, and you’re not sure why? Toddlers often lack the verbal skills to articulate their emotions, but they rely on us as their parents to understand and interpret their behavior. Sometimes this looks like acting out or throwing a “fit”.
By asking the right questions and peeling away the layers, we can uncover the underlying feelings and needs behind their actions. It's important for us to recognize and validate their emotions, creating an environment where they feel safe and valued. This, in turn, strengthens the bond between parent and child.
Remember, even when your toddler is upset, it's important to acknowledge their feelings while maintaining firm boundaries. Building trust and emotional security with our toddlers is a rewarding journey that benefits both parent and child. Together, we can decode their behavior and unlock the superpower of understanding!

Picture this: the breakfast table is set, the sun is shining, and the birds are chirping. You've managed to get your three-year-old to sit down, ready to enjoy your first cup of coffee. But suddenly, their favorite pancakes have turned into the worst thing in the world, and they demand a bagel instead. The power struggle begins.
Sound familiar? In this episode, we’re exploring the concept of the "pivot point," a crucial moment where you, as a mom, can choose to escalate or de-escalate the situation.
As moms, we understand the desire for our children to listen and respect us. But instead of resorting to yelling or threats, I encourage you to sidestep the power struggles. Try using playfulness to inspire cooperation, and meeting your child where they are developmentally and emotionally. By engaging them with characters or playful challenges, you can lighten the mood, strengthen your bond, and reduce frustration!

In this episode, we'll be talking about an issue that we know all too well: dealing with clingy toddlers. We like to call this the snuggle struggle! As both a pediatrician and a mom, I understand how frustrating and emotionally exhausting it can be when your little ones seem to be attached to you at all times. And guess what? You're not alone in this. In a recent Instagram poll, 70% of parents described their toddlers as super-clingy.
If you're tired of your little one pulling at your clothes every time you try to go to the washroom or if you're hoping to get some space during an arts and crafts project only to have your little one want to sit on your lap, then you already know how confusing and challenging it can be to have an overly-clingy toddler. Having a little one constantly attached to you can be emotionally draining.
We’re taking a look at a real-life example of mom Sophie’s story and how she managed her 3-year-old daughter Chelsea’s suffocating clinginess. Stay tuned to hear what you can do to help your little ones through this developmental phase!

Today, we’re diving into a hot topic, potty training! More specifically, we're chatting about why traditional potty training is totally outdated, and your toddler doesn't need it. I mean, come on, who has the time and patience for that anyway? Traditional toilet training is all about control and punishment, which is not cool for our little munchkins' emotional health.
Let's give our toddlers the power they crave and let them learn to use the potty naturally. Just like when they learned to walk, we provided the right environment and let them try and try until they nailed it. And trust me, your little ones will feel so proud of themselves when they finally master peeing and pooping in the potty.
But before you start, I've got a new strategy for you called pre-potty training or toilet training warm-up. Think of it as a little warm-up before you hit the gym. And to make it even easier, I've created a mini e-book for you with the five must-dos before starting potty training. It's filled with strategies to make the process a breeze, even if your little one doesn't show any signs of readiness.
So, if you're ready to ditch the old ways and embrace the new, check out the link below for the 5 Must-Dos Before Potty Training E-Book.

Do you have a tattle tale? If so, today’s episode is for you. Let me paint a picture. Three-and-a-half-year-old Sam is a sweet kid, but he's in the habit of tattling on his older brother Eric, who is just six years old. Whenever Eric does something that Sam thinks isn't nice or fair, he runs to his parents and tells on him. For example, if Eric takes one of Sam's toys or accidentally drops something, Sam runs to his parents and says, Eric did it.
Ready to combat tattletales? Help your child feel seen. When they feel seen, their need to tattletale gradually diminishes. You can empower your child by equipping them with the tools to manage problems on their own. With time, tattletales will fizzle out. But in the meantime, also remember the power of exclusive time or special time or magic time, whatever you wanna call it, for just 10 minutes a day. Let your child choose what they want to do and then the two of you do that together. Playing with your toddler, just the two of you for 10 minutes a day is a research-based way to ease messy toddler behaviors.

Fears can be formidable for toddlers to face! Particularly so before they have formed the skills to express themselves fully.
Fear is a survival mechanism that protects us from danger. Yet it can be overwhelming and confusing for toddlers. Toddlers depend on structure and routine to feel safe, so when something unexpected happens, they may become fearful.
As adults, it is easy to forget how scary the world can seem from a toddler’s point of view. Fear is a perfectly normal part of any toddler's development. But even so, their fears can sometimes be exhausting, frustrating, or even inconvenient for us to cope with as parents.
Today, I explore toddlers’ fears and dive into what you can do to help your little one manage and overcome their fears. Stay tuned to learn strategies to empower your child to accept their fears and make space to overcome them.

All kids curse at some point! (Even though they most likely don’t understand what they are saying.)
Last week, Jillian wrote in asking for help. Her three-year-old daughter discovered the f-word, and Jillian has no idea where she learned it because they don’t swear at home. When it happened, everyone was shocked, so they burst out laughing. Now, Jillian wishes they had not responded that way because wherever they go, her daughter keeps using the f-word.
Toddlers love to feel powerful! They are still trying to understand how things work in the world and often experiment with language when learning how to express themselves. Swearing is one of the ways they do that while also trying to assert their independence.
In this episode, I dive into how to manage things when your toddler starts saying the f-word. I get into why kids swear and explain things from the bigger-picture perspective. Stay tuned to learn how to cope and what to do when your little one uses foul language.

As a parent, you will be pleased to learn that pooping issues are pretty common during potty training!
Toddlers have a short attention span and buzz quickly from one activity to the next. They tend to use the potty much the same, so they sometimes don't sit there as long as they should.
Today I answer some burning questions from parents about potty training. I explain why toddlers may resist pooping and what tends to happen when they don't stay long enough on the potty. I also discuss constipation, how to avoid it, and ways to empower your toddler to use the potty.

Does thinking of introducing your toddler to their new sibling stress you out? If so, the solution may be much simpler than you surmised.
No matter what you do to prepare your toddler beforehand, they will still be surprised when a new baby comes home and stays. All parents share similar fears and concerns about turning their toddlers' worlds upside down when having another baby. So cut yourself some slack. Take the time to make sense of the new relationships and figure out how to balance everyone’s needs.
Your assumptions and attitudes can influence the process of preparing your toddler for the arrival of a new baby. You may worry about giving too much attention to the baby in front of your firstborn. Perhaps you feel sad or guilty about not having the time to focus on your toddler as much as you did before. Or you may even feel you are not fully meeting the needs of anyone.
In this episode, I discuss ways to prepare your toddler for welcoming a new sibling, and I share some strategies to encourage positive sibling relationships. Stay tuned to learn how to help your toddler navigate the potentially difficult transition to becoming a big brother or sister.

Unrealistic expectations start early. Would you believe that most moms magnify what their toddlers can manage?
Having unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment and frustration and cause unnecessary stress and conflict between parents and children. Parents with unreasonable expectations could even result in children having a sense of failure for not pleasing their parents.
A national survey of parents of young children by the ZERO TO THREE Organization found that most parents overestimate their toddler's abilities. The survey also showed that most parents wished they could stop losing their cool with their toddlers.
Today, I focus on what is known as the expectation gap and dive into the results of the survey. Stay tuned to learn about a toddler’s milestones and how to guide them kindly and effectively!

Would it surprise you to learn that pooping problems often prevail during the potty training process?
Toddlers love routines and rituals, so changing them could upset your child and cause problems. When a child who pooped perfectly well in a diaper starts experiencing problems while being potty trained, something about the process is likely upsetting them. It could be due to fear or anxiety. It may be a need for privacy or better support. Or your toddler may be holding their bowel movements to maintain some semblance of control over their life.
Today, I answer a question from Gillian, whose almost three-year-old son refuses to poop on the potty, and dive into the confusing and sometimes overwhelming pooping problems that may happen during potty training.
Poop problems can be stressful and challenging! Stay tuned to learn how to assume a no-pressure approach to potty training and help your child feel more comfortable about pooping on the potty.

Did you know that setting limits for your little ones will let them know they are looked after and loved?
Most parents find it easy to love their kids and ensure they are happy and self-confident. Yet many struggle with setting and holding boundaries.
Toddlers need boundaries to keep them safe and healthy and allow them to feel protected and secure in their world. Even though they are desperate for power, getting too much of it feels uncomfortable for toddlers. That’s why they often cannot cope when they get what they want.
Parents need to understand that when their toddler cries for something, they are actually crying for help. Today, I look into why so many parents struggle with setting boundaries and explain why kids must have limits.

Did you know that encouraging toddlers to entertain themselves independently is essential for their evolution?
I have often heard parents commenting that they cannot get anything done because their children will not play without them. Yet, it is essential to understand that playing on their own helps children develop confidence, build resilience, and increase their problem-solving abilities.
It is not hard to create a simple set-up for your toddler to play independently. But understand that if you have always involved yourself with their play, there will likely be some initial pushback.
In this episode, I explain how to create an environment that reflects your child’s interest and how to encourage them to play there. I also dive into how long you can realistically expect your child to remain content playing on their own and habits to avoid that might discourage independent play.
Stay tuned to learn what to do to encourage your child to play independently!

Did you know toddlers do not typically try to hurt the person they hit?
Your toddler is not a bad kid if they smack someone. Nor does it mean you are no good as a parent or indicate that there may be problems down the road. They are simply acting their age.
Toddlers hit to express their feelings. Their brains are still developing. So they have poor impulse control. They struggle to articulate their feelings and tend to behave however they feel. They are also still learning about cause and effect. So when they hit someone, they fail to understand how it impacts them.
In this episode, I dive into the reasons toddlers hit. I share some helpful strategies to cope with hitting and explain how to teach toddlers better ways to manage their strong feelings.
Stay tuned to learn how to manage hitting in a way that protects your toddler's self-esteem while also allowing you to stay calm.

Did you know that smiling, smirking, or sniggering is a common way for toddlers to cope with the stress of being scolded?
It can be challenging for parents to deal with what looks like sassy behavior. But toddlers are not being purposefully rude if they laugh, cover their ears, stick out their tongue, or get angry and run away when they get criticized or pulled up. They tend to do that because they don't know what to do with their intense feelings. They are still learning about social norms, so they might not understand what others expect of them. They realize they have done something wrong and may feel confused, shameful, uneasy, or uncomfortable.
Today, I respond to a question from a frustrated and confused mom from Ohio. I dive into what is truly happening when kids laugh when they get corrected or reprimanded and explain what to do about it.
Stay tuned to learn how to recognize it when your toddler feels overwhelmed or uncertain and avoid having knee-jerk reactions.

Did you know that spitting might simply be your toddler’s way of showing their singularity?
Spitting is a pretty common toddler problem. It may seem gross to us as parents, but toddlers find it funny and love to watch their parents freaking out! That does not make them bad kids. They just enjoy feeling powerful.
Developmentally, toddlers are starting to realize themselves as separate people, and seeing their parents get upset emphasizes their sense of individuality. An effective way to stop them from spitting is to help them find new ways of exploring their uniqueness and power.
Today, I answer a question from Rebecca, a lovely mom in Canada struggling to stop her two-year-old from spitting. I get into why toddlers tend to spit, discuss ways to empower your child as they evolve as individuals, and share some strategies to help you get through those challenging moments without having knee-jerk reactions you may later regret.

Does your toddler’s extra-enthusiastic, energetic, and excitable temperament ever exasperate you?
Some kids are just naturally more intense, passionate, and emotional than others. Two-year-olds have limited self-control. So even though toddlers with big, exuberant personalities are delightful, their extreme enthusiasm can sometimes cause problems. They cannot restrain their energy, so their hugs and physical interactions can often be too much for other children to bear.
Today, I dive into the topic of excitable kids and answer a question from a lovely mom in Florida, struggling to discipline her passionate and hyper-energetic two-year-old who tends to come on way too strong with other kids.
Stay tuned to learn how to regulate the energy of your excitable child without crushing their personality or enthusiasm.

Did you know that you can reduce troublesome tantrums by tapping into what’s causing them?
Toddlers’ tantrums can be wild, irrational, and confusing. So it helps to understand that tantrums are a normal part of a toddler’s development because their brains are still developing.
When a tantrum happens, the toddler’s right brain, which is the part that is emotional, impulsive, and tuned into non-verbal cues, overwhelms the left brain and takes control. Fortunately, your adult brain is balanced, and you can use it to calm your toddler down.
Children cannot process anything when they are all worked up. So in this episode, I discuss the three phases of a tantrum and share strategies for managing toddlers' tantrums without losing your cool. Tune in to learn how to deal with tantrums in the present moment, and find out how and when to intervene to calm a tantrum down.

Did you know that treating siblings as equals fuels friction and fighting?
Sibling relationships are complex. Observational studies have shown that
some siblings fight as often as eight times an hour! Yet those relationships are essential for shaping children, and from a developmental standpoint, sibling rivalry helps kids figure out their distinctive qualities.
Siblings support one another and learn from each other. But they also compete for their parent's love and attention. So when we strive for equality with our children, they will always tally up and try to figure out who got more than the others.
The more a child is validated and seen, the more secure they feel. In this episode, I focus on why children should be treated as individuals rather than equals and explain how treating kids as individuals improves sibling relationships.

Do you dread the despair of difficult daily drop-offs?
The woeful look on a toddler’s face when parting makes it hard for parents to walk away without feeling heartbroken and guilty.
Most children become clingy between eighteen months and three years of age, and all kids experience anxiety at some point in their early years. So it’s normal and expected for toddlers to feel sad and stressed when saying goodbye. Every child is different, and they all develop at their own pace, so we never know when those painful partings will appear or fade away. Still, it is encouraging to know that children do outgrow separation anxiety.
Parents need to help their children handle separation in a healthy way. In today’s episode, I dive into how to do that. I also explain why you should never sneak out after dropping your toddler off and share something I discovered that made a massive difference after many weeks of difficult drop-offs.

Did you know that toddlers cannot comprehend the concept of sharing?
Snatching toys and shouting “mine” is not a sign of selfishness in toddlers. It only happens because they have no idea what sharing is. Issues around sharing- or not sharing can cause a lot of uncertainty and embarrassment and may even lead parents to doubt themselves. That’s why we need to understand that toddlers are not being selfish when they fail to share. They are simply finding ways to understand the world around them.
Sharing is challenging for toddlers because they don't understand that separate individuals exist. That means they cannot see things from someone else’s point of view, which is necessary to know what sharing is. They also cannot fathom that some things belong to others, and their toddler's brains are still growing, so their impulse areas are not yet fully developed.
In this episode, I answer a question from a lovely mom and offer some helpful parenting tools to teach toddlers to stand up for themselves while also being kind and open-hearted.

Are time-outs truly the best way to tackle your toddlers’ tantrums?
Time-outs have been the go-to method for dealing with children’s undesirable behavior since the 1950s.
From the age of two, most parents start considering what works and what does not. Many parents tend to worry about being too hard or too soft on their children, getting them to listen, or even messing them up.
In this episode, I’m combining my years of first-hand experience with scientific research to discuss whether or not time-outs work, and if they do, at what cost. Stay tuned for more!

Has your toddler been telling tall tales?
If so, don’t panic! All kids stretch the truth at times, and lying is a perfectly normal part of a toddler’s development.
Even though it can be perplexing to hear your toddler tell unlikely stories, it is neither a reflection of bad character nor a sign of moral weakness! Lying is a complex skill. So, when two-year-olds do it, it is considered a sign of advanced cognitive capabilities and shows that they have an active imagination.
Despite that, we still need to teach our kids that lying is not an acceptable way to overcome problems. In this episode, we explain how to teach kids right from wrong, confidently and calmly rather than punitively, and deal with toddlers’ lies effectively, to ensure that they diminish over time! Stay tuned for more!

Toddlers suck their thumb when bored, falling asleep, upset, and watching tv. It creates a yummy feeling, like a day at the spa. Over time, kids develop other calming skills and typically give the habit up.
But what if they don’t?
Most kids will stop sucking their thumbs around 2-4 years of age, or by the time the permanent teeth are ready to erupt. That is, as long as we don’t pester our kids about thumb-sucking. When we pressure our kids to stop, we may inadvertently cause more thumbsucking. So, today let’s talk about how you can help your toddler break the habit.

No one wants their kids flinging toys/objects across the room. I’m not talking about a friendly game of catch. I’m talking about when the remote control goes flying because you said, “No, sweetheart, you can’t have cake for breakfast.” In this episode, Dr. Cathryn helps us understand why kids throw things and how to end this habit in ways that protect a child’s dignity, curiosity, and self-esteem.

Kids whine for many reasons, but driving you crazy isn’t actually one of them. Toddlers lack sophistication… and moaning and groaning is their way of saying, “I need you. Please take care of me.” Instead of viewing whining as a toddler trying to manipulate you, remember that whining is a toddler's attempt at trying to be seen and heard. They just lack the tools to do this.
So, how can we help our kids communicate more effectively?
3 PRO-TIPS:
1. When you want to get through to a toddler, use playfulness. It works like magic because it speaks to them where they’re at developmentally and emotionally.
2. Try responding to whining in a whisper. For many kids, it works let a reset.
3. If your kids are whining because they’re tired, bored, hungry, or scared, you’ll need to take care of those needs first.

The problem with forced apologies is that it causes a child to feel shame without teaching them anything about empathy. And it often doesn’t even necessarily soothe the hurt child because they sense the apology is false.
So, What Should You Do Instead? In this episode, dr cathryn discusses how to raise a child who shows respect and caring for others. And this includes research-based strategies on how to encourage your toddler to give heartfelt apologies. And lastly, a reminder, toddlers are growing and learning . . . and real change takes time.

About Dr. Cathryn:
I’m a pediatrician with more than 30 years of experience. I’ve written two books on parenting, The Parent Problem Solver and The Lull-A-Baby Sleep Plan. I’ve also consulted with hundreds of thousands of parents on how to help with their children’s problem behaviors.
But what makes me uniquely qualified to speak on this subject is that I’m a mom (of 4 kids!) — and I’ve been in your shoes.
I want to help you create an environment where you don’t wake up wishing the day was over. I never want you to turn down another opportunity to meet a friend for lunch or go to the park because you're scared of what your toddler might do.
It’s why I’ve created Toddlers Made Easy.
