My guest this week is designer Dana Lee of Dana Lee Brown
If the name rings a bell, this isn’t her first time making clothes; she used to run her brand as Dana Lee in the late aughts. I remember getting her twill pants, which I still own, and they were simple, well made, and classic. She recently re-launched her brand not long ago after taking some time off, and it’s incredible.
It’s a small collection, but as you’ll hear, it’s not made or manufactured the way her previous one was. In fact, she’s one of the few brands I know that are leading the way in this “farm to loom” production. In fact, all of her stuff is made in a relatively local radius. It makes you think more.
We chatted about her brand, why she manufactures this way, and her work with local makers to create the best menswear.

Surprise, we have a special episode discussing quite possibly one of my favorite watches of all time. Look, if you’re new here, I’m a SeikoBoi, a Seiko Fan (and btw you can be too!) I have been collecting and obsessing over Seikos forever. It’s how I got into watches – and the golden goose, the holy grail; whatever expression you want is the Seiko 62MAS or what many people know as the classic Seiko diver.
Seiko recently launched a new version of the 62mas which is almost an identical re-issue of the classic 6217, the SJE093.
Naturally, I enlisted the help of Rob Caplan and Zachary Piña from Topper to help me understand this watch, unpack its origins, and learn more about why this little dive watch has every collector going nuts.

When bespoke shoemaker Seiji McCarthy chatted with Peter and Derek last year, he mentioned that he thinks it's much easier to make a living as a craftsperson in Tokyo because of the availability of cheap real estate.
So when Joe McReynolds, co-author of the new book Emergent Tokyo: Designing the Spontaneous City, reached out to see if Peter and Derek wanted to chat about urban policy, they jumped at the chance.
What makes Tokyo such a particularly good breeding ground for bespoke crafts? McReynolds suggests it's about more than culture—it's also about how we build cities.

Nina Penlington is the head cutter at Edward Sexton. She carries forward one of the greatest tailoring legacies of our generation.
The late Edward Sexton was the technical mind behind Nutters of Savile Row. In the 1960's Edward and Tommy Nutter revitalized the Row with their glamorous suits and welcoming shop front. They dressed rock and roll legends such as Mick Jagger, Elton John, and most Beatles members.
The cut was unapologetic and romantic. Edward and Tommy made full-bodied coats with square shoulders, nipped waists, and lapels so wide that they almost grazed the wearer's shoulders. Sexton liked to call his cut "long and leafy."
Sadly, Edward passed away in the summer of '23, and Nina, who previously worked under him, has taken his place as the firm's head cutter. She has almost 20 years of experience as a cutter, having worked at Dege & Skinner and Gieves & Hawks, which gives her a solid foundation for carrying forward Edward's strong and angular cut.
Derek and Peter discuss what it was like working with Edward, how to make bespoke suits for women, and a controversial tailoring topic called "straightening & crookening."

Jeremy, Jian, and Jon talk about Italian shoe factories and Jian shows us his Gucci Adidas and Louis Vuitton Air Force 1s. We talk about Virgil, the legendary Air Menthol 10s, and meander into a discussion of wedding fits. In the midst of a tux vs no tux debate, Jon says something blasphemous about Belgian Loafers. The guys yet again talk about TikTok and inspiration sources, but this time mention a few TikTok accounts they enjoy. Jon decides he wants to get his Screen Actors Guild card. But not necessarily because he wants to act.

This week's guest is dear friend, author, and President of the Beggars Group US, Nabil Ayers. He just published his memoir, My Life in The Sunshine, and it's one of the most refreshing, heartwarming, generous books I've read in years.
A memoir about one man's journey to connect with his musician father, ultimately re-drawing the lines that define family and race.
But Nabil came on the pod to discuss his recent memoir, the music that defined his life, seeing Nirvana before Nevermind came out, opening for Mudhoney, and how he found his way to writing and discovering his family.

When Derek visited Naples about ten years ago, many of the older Italian tailors told him they were worried about the future of their trade. As more tailors retire, fewer and fewer young people are taking their place. Yet, the scarcity of young tailors has only made it more exciting to see new people pick up needles and shears. In our first episode of Blamo Presents: Derek Guy, we talk about some of the more exciting tailoring houses today, what you can expect to pay for a bespoke suit, and the stash of rare Apparel Arts magazines Jeremy found at a garage sale.

Jason has been a force behind the scenes in the worlds of music and fashion for a minute, working with Jamiroquai, A Bathing Ape, Paul Smith, and Drake’s (to name a few), plus his own projects under the name Garmsville. Lately, his Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style has been blowing up in the world of menswear, including earning a co-sign from Tyler, the Creator.
In our conversation, we talk about why musicians are launching brands, how we communicate through what we wear, and what Black Ivy is really about. It’s so epic, we’re crossing the whole ep over into the main Blamo feed to give a bigger taste of Extra to a wider audience.

This week, Rob chats with DJ Justine D.
Justine is a born and raised New Yorker who’s been DJing in the city since the late 90's and became a go-to party promoter at the heart of New York City’s famous nightlife and music scene in the 2000s. She co-hosted weekly parties like Aktion at Lit Lounge, Tiswas at Don Hill’s, and the moveable feast known as Motherfucker. If you know the book and documentary Meet Me in the Bathroom, you'll know how much she was a big part of that time and place.
Rob and Justine talk about New York’s music and club scene of the era, how its inclusivity and grittiness bucked the trends of the 90’s, and what nightlife used to be like in the days before social media. They also talk about her knack for combining vintage designer pieces with contemporary labels to make a style all her own, way before that was a thing. My guest this week is Jared Blake and Ed Be, founders of Lichen New York.
Lichen is a Brooklyn/Queens based interior design shop & incubator that has absolutely blown up the past couple of years.
They don’t have traditional backgrounds; they don’t have a “core piece” in fact, they’ve probably done more awareness and education for brands like Herman Miller and Knoll than those brands could do on their own. But Jared and Ed are doing everything right. They’re creating a world that’s accessible, inspirational, inviting, and democratizing the landscape.
Jared, Ed, and I discuss the origins of Lichen, how they’re evolving the brand, and how their team is paving the way for your next favorite designer.

My guest this week is Erlend Øye.
He’s a singer, songwriter, and musician known for his own music, legendary DJ sets, the electronic, non-electronic band, The Whitest Boy Alive, but to many, he’s one half of the acoustic duo from Bergen, Norway, Kings of Convenience.
Their first album, Quiet is the New Loud released in 2001 and caught the entire industry off guard. Softly spoken, beautiful harmonies with lyrics incredibly specific yet perfectly vague.
Music that, for me, not only influenced my life but brought me out of my hometown to New York.
Kings of Convenience recently released their new album Peace or Love after a 12-year hiatus. And it picks up…exactly where they left off. Softly spoken, beautiful, intimate, and in a way, precisely what I want in my ears these days.
Erlend and I discuss how different projects are essential for his mental health, why Kings of Convenience took over a decade off, how the digital age of music affects promotion, his take on fashion, and their Oblique Strategies for songwriting.

For years, like many of you, I’ve been a massive fan of Derek Guy, the author of the popular site, Die! Workwear.
Derek is a writer and personality unlike any I’ve ever known in the industry. It’s not because of how he dresses – because good luck finding a picture of him anyway – but his writing is often from a historical perspective and reminds us how we dress connects to our culture. Every time I read his work, I walk away enlightened.
So I asked him about the resurgence of #menswear, something I’m ecstatic about and hopeful for – his answer was not what I expected, but after re-listening, it’s what I needed to hear.

Anda Rowland has a lot on her plate. She manages the legendary Savile Row tailoring house Anderson & Sheppard, the haberdashery, and is also working with the rest of the Savile Row houses to re-invigorate the landscape.
But she’s doing just fine and is continuing to remind us of why Savile Row has been around for nearly 300 years. From multiple world wars and recessions. She’s confident they will manage. And they certainly are.
It’s Blamo! Extra and Anda Rowland is back.
We chat about how Anderson & Sheppard has managed the pandemic, the Fran Leibowitz bump, Netflix’s The Crown, and how the new Savile Row is evolving.

My guest this week is Icelandic designer Sruli Recht, who blends fine art, runway fashion, and industrial design.
Originally from Israel, he spent most of his early life in Australia and found his way to designing rave clothes for friends. Eventually moving to London and working for Alexander Mcqueen, and from there, well...it’s not the journey or nostalgia you’d expect.
Sruli and I discuss why his empathy made it impossible for him to be a veterinarian, switching from classic fine art to making clothes for ravers, how the greatest waste in fashion is how it treats and uses up people, and why he values information over money.

If you know, you know...and "The only podcast that matters™" is Throwing Fits.
Lawrence Schlossman and James Harris's podcast is often the highlight of my week, and I'm privileged to be buddies with them.
It's been surreal to watch their show go from essentially a google hangouts chatbox with themselves to the juggernaut podcast and brand that is Throwing Fits.
Larry has been on the pod a few times, so if you want to know his backstory, dig through that archive, but if you want the hot goss now? The answers to your questions? The AMA of all AMA's is here.
It's Throwing Fits and the B!, together, answering your questions.
My guests this week are Saeed and Katy Al-Rubeyi, co-founders of Story MFG.
We discuss how Story MFG emerged out of their relationship, the power and burden of being a small brand, dealing with critics, making things not look “perfect,” and how I believe they’re changing an entire industry with their aesthetic and ethics.

There is a bit of lore with clothing brands from Japan.
Maybe it’s because if you like clothes, nearly every road leads to Japan.
But how do their clothing business and industry work?
What’s the deal with Kapital? And why are so many of these brands hard to find outside of Japan?
I sat down with Jonathan Lukacek, ex Kapital employee and founder of the Bandanna Almanac.
He’s loved Japanese clothes so much he moved there and hasn’t looked back since.
Jonathan and I discussed the myth behind the Japanese fashion trends, what it’s like to work in the industry there, and why he continues to love it. Last but not least, he shares how John Mayer got into Kapital.

I've known Jake Grantham for nearly ten years, and it has been incredible to watch his rise.
Originally from London, Jake moved to HK to join the first team at The Armoury. He met Alex Pirounis there, and they both eventually left to start their shop in London called Anglo Italian. If you want to hear more about that, I def encourage you to listen to Jake's first pod we did together.
Since then, it's been an upward rise in this little world of menswear. From Anglo Italian's jeans to knits. They've nailed this classic/casual/chic aesthetic.
Jake's a bit of an old soul, and while he has a keen eye for detail and aesthetics, he's done a fantastic job with retail and e-commerce. SO much that when lockdown hit, they were able to pivot quite well to online only.
I reached out to Jake to check in and hear how quarantine has had him do some deep thinking. Jake and I discussed how their business evolved in quarantine, why he's anxious to visit the National Gallery, and what Anglo Italian is working for this fall.

Coronavirus has upended every aspect of the fashion industry––especially runway shows. We got zoom shows, socially distanced masked models, its wild to see some of my favorite brands think fast and keep going.
I’m hopeful, but not everyone is. Many critics are lamenting the in person show, but all these new formats have provided an opportunity for brands to distinguish themselves further
Joining me to chat is Jacob Gallagher, Men's Fashion Editor of Off Duty in The Wall Street Journal.
Jacob and I discuss fashion’s pivot to online only shows and how the new format is not as new as we all think.
We also discuss how this scale back and lack of shows has helped democratize the medium for newer designers, and the designer he will drive across Paris for…

So you got your first watch, and you realized––holy cow, this is amazing. I'm ready to dive deeper.
How on earth do you buy a vintage watch, where do you start, is it only for the super-rich? (spoiler alert: it's not.)
We're joined by friend and past guest of the pod, Eric Wind, to ask these questions and the tons of questions you all have asked over the years.
We discuss what you should look for when getting into vintage, great watches under 500, how to develop your style, and Eric shares his thoughts on what he feels is exceptionally overrated. It's surprising, exciting, and the first of many deep dives on Blamo! Extra.

Everyone is just trying to survive; I think this is something you hear everywhere, from every business and perspective.
Then there's Antonio Ciongoli, and 18 East. A brand that yes, is trying to survive but right now is flourishing.
Antonio, the creative director, is an old friend, and something I've loved about him is while he's a designer, he's also an evangelist. Over the years, I've watched him as the influencer's influencer, seeding ideas to friends–– the double monk, the camp mocc, hell, the cargo pant.
Because when Antonio gets into an idea, he gets INTO it, and that's something I genuinely love about him.
Antonio and I chatted about his previous company Eidos, and how the ups and downs of that business helped him launch and run 18 East. A brand that if you haven't been obsessed with yet, you're probably about to be.
