Blynd Submyshynz is a podcast from the wild minds of Jeff Wilson (KOOK, Glory or Death Records, Heavy San Jose) and JD Norton (Heavy San Jose). We want to expose you to new music in the DIY scene, and hang out with music industry folks we know or want to know better. Every week we’ll take submissions from any band who finds our email address ([email protected])…listen to them for the first time with our special guest and give honest reactions, and talk about things affecting DIY musicians around the globe. Logo by Nick Fox of Mind Reaper Comix!
The podcast Blynd Submyshynz is created by JD Norton and Jeff Wilson. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Aaaaand I'm back! Busy, busy, busy time of year and this episode will be a quick one...which was sort of the intention in the first place. I went and saw Brutus live last week, you should not miss them if they come to your town. I also dig into Renewer, Bandhood and Oslo Tapes. Ramble on way too long about how those core memories of yours meeting your favorite bands are not core memories of theirs...sorry, they just aren't, and urge you all to go watch the KEXP session with New Age Doom. Plus, I dig into an artist I have been fanboying over lately, Lola Young. Probably not what you'd be expecting on this show, but give her a listen and you too may fall hard for her music. Think Adele if she grew up a grimy punk.
Opening clip for Future Echoes with just JD
In this second episode of Future Echoes, I dig into Vancouver, BC band, New Age Doom, their newest album, There is No End, featuring Tuvaband, as well as an album they did with Lee Scratch Perry, "...Guide to the Universe". I then take a look back at their drummer's other band, who I fell in love with while living in Vancouver, Limblifter. You should also check out Mounties, if you dig Limblifter.
Plus, we cover some news, tours, new album announcements and so much more!
I also dig into upcoming releases and announced tours. A bit longer than the last, but hope you enjoy the show.

Send me your echoes or up-and-coming bands: [email protected]

Not really a "welcome back" but more of a "JD got bored and needed to ramble out loud to himself about music". The point of Future Echoes — surprisingly, not an homage to Slomatics, but I do love them — is to have fun remembering great music from the past and digging into the new what next! Showing us old folks that great music is certainly still being made, you just got too busy to search it out, and hopefully introducing you young'uns to bands that influenced who you listen to today. Will there still be heavier music? Yep, but not entirely. Prepare for a JD overdose with lots of lip smacking, heavy breathing (I really need to find that pop filter) and rambling galore
++++
In this episode, JD remembers how much he loved Ministry, as they have announced that their next album will be their last. Al is 65!!
And then he urges you to check out Blues Funeral Records, then dig into the back catalog of Abrams, whose next album will be coming out on Blues Funeral soon.

We're back. Descriptions will be shorter. Maybe we won't have a new episode every week...maybe we will. Scott Evans from Kowloon Walled City and Antisleep Audio was a fantastic guess...kept us on track and off tangents, and has touched (teehee) so many past guests. Enjoy!
Oh...and bands...please put credits on your bandcamp. Production, art, whoever should be acknowledged, even if you did it all yourself. Carry on.

We had a lovely sit-down this week with Andy Gibbs, guitar player for Thou. Andy is a thoughtful chap and has been in the heavy game for a long time. We talked about how/why Thou has been so prolific, what it was like to record a Tiny Desk concert, working with friends on collaborations, playing festivals, and the true nature of Louisiana sludge (hint, it's not the swamp). Enjoy!

This week we chat with Andrew Bansal...man of all the hats. Record label owner, popular review blog, band manager, tour manager, merch lord, and as it turns out, harmonium player! Andrew wrapped up a coast-to-coast tour with Old Blood earlier this year, and went back out on the road selling merch for Exodus on the Bay Strikes Back! tour. This is a wonderful conversation with a person who journeyed from rural India to LA and ended up chasing a bunch of heavy metal dreams. Enjoy!

She baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! In November of 2020 (episode 10) we had a fantastic chat with Lord Dying bass player, tattoo artist, and general artist/video wiz Alyssa Maucere. It was a blast talking to Alyssa again...we talked about what she's been up to since last we spoke including preparing to record a new Lord Dying record in August, playing shows, making music videos, existing in this insane world, how great ISIS (the band) is...and then she discovers her new favorite band...DURING THIS EPSISODE!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndq9a4MHJIc
We really did it this time. 4 hot sauces...each more brutal than the last, including two different versions of the dreaded Da'Bomb. Hang out with Jeff and JD in the backyard...watch their torture as they scorch their mouths (and other parts eventually) and try to listen to hot sauce themed music and the Weedian 420 playlist while trying to have coherent conversations. Special appearance by Jeff's dog, Monkey, too! Lots of chewing, coughing, drinking, sneezing, blowing of noses. You were warned.
CONTEST ALERT!!!
We're giving away 2 copies of the JIRM record The Tunnel, The Well, Holy Bedlam that was recently released. We'll give one copy to a random channel subscriber, and one copy to anyone who comments on any of our videos between now and Friday 5/20! Two years in the making...Jeff finally talked Karl from KOOK into recording...in person (a first). Jeff has been hesitant about self-promotion from the beginning...but here we are...he's in a band with Karl and they make music together and have thoughts about it. We talked about the writing process for the next KOOK record, dipping back into roots rock but making it weird, loving Michael Shenker and Alex Lifeson, recording with Jack Endino...his long-time relationship with Mitch French from Dear Deceased, Operator Generator, Burn Thee Insects, and Lazer Beam. We reminisced about the stoner scene in San Jose, and also other stuff. This one speaks for itself. If you've been listening since the beginning you'll hear some familiar stuff from the source. Operator Generator. Sleep. Fireface. High on Fire. Stoner Steve. We went to all of those places.

We have something different this week. We attended our first music festival in over two years, and hung out with the fine gentlemen in Moon Tooth!!! It was weird and glorious...so we decided to record on the way (and back) in the car. We listened to all the bands on the undercard and gave our two cents...most we had never listened to before. Because we recorded in the car...the quality is not quite our usual...especially for the first 30 seconds or so...but HANG IN THERE...it gets better. We did our best to tone down the road noise...but ultimately we were in a car going 70 miles an hour recording on iPhones with lav mics. Get our pre-show thoughts in the first half, and then an event recap in the second half!
Great people watching, some good and bad music...a bonus hardcore show in a tiny venue, and good times were had. Shortly after we got there we heard one person in front of us say "I saw Good Charlotte when I was 13 and that shit changed my life". That pretty much sums up Swanfest we'd say!
Here's a playlist of the bands we listened to in the order we listened...pause at the sweet guitar solo between each discussion and listen along if you like...for most we sampled the first couple "most popular" tracks on Spotify. Join us...it's fun!!!
We have quite a treat today...all the way from Cardiff Wales, it's Jessica Ball, MWWB's singer and guitar player. We talked about growing up in South Africa and moving back to Wales, studying jazz guitar, how the band was formed, how they got such a cheeky name, and dealing with guitar player Paul's serious health issues. We got some dirt on her other band Eye, and listened to a spectacular set of submissions.

Adult human stuff happened, but now it's podcast time again (we explain right at the beginning)! This week's guest was a long time coming...the final member of Brume, Drummer Jordan Perkins Lewis. Jordan is a fantastic drummer with crazy eclectic musical taste, a wild upbringing among the blue-collar workers in the movie business, and a badass job producing videos, TV content, and working the scoreboard graphics for the San Francisco Giants. He's also not shy with his opinions, as you will quickly discover. We listened to some really cool submissions, but Jordan was up for more so we also dug through the "what are people buying right now" ticker and some of the top seller charts too!

And now for something completely different. Jeff is a regular consumer of dorky music theory content and weird boomer guitar videos on YouTube. JD is not. Jeff was quite sure JD would hate all of it, and he was right...kinda. Watch JD learn what polyrhythms are in real time...it's fun. Plus we tackle boomer bends, Rick Beato, the mystery that is YouTube's obsession with the Polyphia song GOAT, and much more.

She came up on the last episode while we were talking to Mike Scheidt, we love Eight Bells, and they have a new album releasing called Legacy of Ruin on February 25th via Prophecy Productions, so we thought what better time have on vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Melynda Jackson, and she was awesome. Melynda is one of the long list of stalwart underground heavy musicians from the bay area who relocated to Portland to escape rising cost of living and decreasing opportunity...we talk about her beginnings as a musician, her long-running band SubArachnoid Space, growing up in a small town in Texas, cheating guitar center, the artwork for their killer new record (and the music itself), and cats. We also listened to some cool stuff. And to all the new subscribers post Mike Scheidt...welcome aboard!

Nothing really needs to be said here. Mike graced us with over 3 hours of his time to tell stories, laugh, listen to music, discuss the stonerrock.com forums, and talk about the almost incomprehensible ascendance of Yob to the metal pantheon. Our main takeaway after talking with Mike? This is a great guy who simply loves music. Also, the discussion of his new classical composition is awesome. Yob's got 4 shows at Saint Vitus in February followed by a west coast tour in March...go see them if you can!

What a delightful dive into the Long Island hardcore scene with (prog-loving) scenester Artie Shepherd. Artie has been part of the LIHC scene since the beginning, playing in Mind Over Matter (and a bunch of other bands), his band Primitive Weapons with past-guest (and co-owner of Saint Vitus, Chris Enriquez). We talked about Artie's musical past, the decision to open a bar and venue, running a live music venue during a pandemic, touring, launching Wreck-Age records, Yes, Rush, and a whole bunch of other shit. Artie has stories for days, and we could probably easily do another 2.5 hours some day...hopefully in person next time. Also there was music listened to.

Plack Blague (aka Raws Schlesinger) joins us to talk about his particular brand of grimy electronic/industrial dance/not dance music, growing up gay in rural Nebraska, getting into music, booking and playing grindcore shows (he plays guitar, bass, drums, and sings too), and just generally about loving anything that is weird and fringe. In his own words..."if you throw up on your keyboard, I want to book you", or something like that. What a wonderful conversation with a truly great underground artist...who also got to meet Rob Halford because he's a fan of Plack Blague (and even dressed up as Raws for Halloween once). Mind fucking blown. Also, Raws told us we were his favorite podcast he's ever done. That ruled.

This week we have a real treat...Chaney Crabb sings for ???progressive death metal??? band Entheos, now signed to Metal Blade Records. Chaney and her fiancée Navene Koperweis are the creative duo behind the band, and are just wrapping up recording their debut record for Metal Blade. They also just moved from Santa Cruz to Nashville. We talk about a little bit of everything from life on the road, getting you Instagram hacked, relocating to the south, seeing Tom and Christina from the wildly popular Your Mom's House podcast watch her TikTok videos and sing her songs, to seeing true masters hone their craft while touring with people like Dave Davidson (Revocation, Jeff's fractured brain) and Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders). We also had a spectacular batch of bands this week...so get cozy and press play!

We really did break the 4 hour mark with John from Moon Tooth. We shared our favorite music discovered in 2021 and listened to FULL songs. Plus John drank a tiny champagne, JD got whiskey drunk real fast, and dad had to take the wheel. We end with the promise of an airBnB in-person hang vacation, which will happen...it will! Happy 2022 folks. Support DIY musicians and artists, because shit didn't get much better this year.

Happy holidays folks...we didn't forget about you. Time to sit back and enjoy this highly entertaining chat with Tom Frank from Austin Texas' Duel and Wicked Bad concerts (who runs the amazing Wicked Bad Stoner Jam in Austin during SXSW music week. Duel's awesome new record In Carne Persona came out in October on Heavy Psych Sounds! Tom is hilarious, watch the video when it goes up on Facebook for amazing virtual green screen hair shenanigans, and though we lost Tom a little early due to Zoom eating his phone batter faster than he could charge it, we got through a bunch of music, including randomly diving into genre bestsellers and checking out the "what are people buying now" scroll on Bandcamp. Enjoy!

Happy Monday, Happy Holidays, and let's get down to the real question here...DOES IT DOOM???? Today's guest is Steve Reis...face of the very popular YouTube channel Does it Doom? Steve's channel helps break down stoner, sludge, and doom songs, bands, and gear...his goal is to de-mystify doom and help folks play the songs and get the tones. How does Matt Pike do it? How does Sunn 0))) make Sunn 0))) sounds? How can yo use gear aimed at the mass market to get very specific sounds? We talked to Steve about all of that, the birth of the channel, new bands to break down, getting into the business of building gear (pedalboards, pedals, guitars), the legendary First Act customs (he's a collector), and balancing a full-time job, a family, and an exploding YouTube empire.
We also listen to some great music, including songs from the Dominance and Submission Blue Oyster Cult comp that Ripple is putting out featuring past guests Howling Giant, Zeke, Year of the Cobra, and many more. We wrap up by listening to Moon Tooth's new song The Conduit as we look forward to our 2021 wrap-up episode with the one and only John Carbone...singer for Moon Tooth.

This episode nearly killed us. Want to hear Jeff and JD both have a stroke in one episode? Here you go! We talk to Forrest, Isaac, and Jessica, 3/4s of Oakland's ambient doomgaze choose-you-own-label band Daxma, who just released a new record called Unmarked Boxes on Blues Funeral Recordings. 15 minutes in to our first attempt to record, Jeff realized he didn't hit record on Zoom again. Yes. Twice in 5 episodes...but we caught it this time, and ended up having a lovely chat!

We're back celebrating Pop's memory by pulling random records and listening to songs/bands we've never heard of. One thing's for sure after the second round....Pop REALLY was a man who liked his music smooth! Jeff got served up some random awesome bands by the Spotify algorithm (I know, we were shocked too), so he made JD blind listen to The Odious, Thank You Scientist, and Rishloo, plus we tease next week's guest John Brookhouse (Worshipper, Gimme Metal Radio) and listen to a killer Worshipper track called Light in the Wires. There are a ton of laughs in this one.

WE GOT A DO-OVER FOR LAST WEEK'S GOOF. Marc Brandi is a gentleman, scholar, and wicked funny musician who was nice enough to re-join us only a week after we forgot to push record on his first episode. We're forever in your debt Marc. Lowcaster is Marc's bay area heavy prog home, and he's also a permanent member of MG&R (formed by Michael Gallagher from Isis). We listened to lots of music and laughed a lot, and made fun of Jeff a lot.

Well...57 episodes in and it finally happened...Jeff didn't press all the record buttons and our wonderful 2 hour chat with Marc Brandi from Lowcaster and Mustard Gas and Roses is gone...at least Marc's part is gone. We may be able to salvage the recording at a later date for comedy purposes...and a new episode with Marc will be up next Monday. This week, we reassembled the full Trevor Church interview from Episode 11-12. They never should have been 2 episodes, and far fewer people listened to Part 2. Doug Walker (Monolith, The Spice Pistols) comes back shortly after his first episode to talk about the devastating fire that took his (and his bandmates' from The Spice Pistols) house, and most of their belongings, including pretty much all of their music and recording gear. Doug gets real talking about the fire and it's aftermath, gets full of gratitude talking about the music community that's helping to support them, and talks about getting through a full tour supporting Agent Orange in the "Age of Rona". We did manage to listen to some music, and dig into a particularly interesting article about the "post-hardcore) scene in Ontario Canada that devolved into Doug predicting what each "post-hardcore" band would sound like based on band photo, band name, and album cover alone (he's pretty fucking good at it). We also learned about Soft Grunge (look it up), and finished up with a song by Dumb Waiter...a previously listened-to band that we loved who was kind enough to send us a record!
This is a great episode, and please donate to the GoFundMe if you can, and share it if you can't. A few other GoFundme's for folks in our community came up as well, so we're linking those too.

This one requires very little preamble. Sacha Dunable of Dunable Guitars and Intronaut sat down with Jay and Thomas from JML guitars to talk about building guitars, and their collaboration building 8 one-of-a-kind guitars featuring Dunable's shapes, electronics, and finishes on top of JML's hand carved neck-through construction.
Jeff got his grubby hands on of the guitars, but a couple are still out in the wild...check the links below. Also listened to a couple songs and went on random tangents, as per ususal.

To celebrate the one year anniversary of the podcast, it only seemed fitting to catch up with some of our favorite people: Pete Holland from Elephant Tree and Trippy Wicked, Susie McMullen from Brume, and for the first time ever, Jamie McCathie (also from Brume). There was some guitar playing, some sharing of must-listen-to bands, a bit of banter, some righteous feminism, and as always, some submissions. Jeff also played a special selection from his high school band Purple Circus, Jamie and Pete take a crack at the West Country English accent (we had no idea what they were saying, and we took many more twists and turns. It's a rewarding episode for sure!

Do not skip this one. Today's guest is Brett Morris, guitar player for Sub Pop Records weirdos Man Man and Mister Heavenly (w/members of Islands, Man Man, Modest Mouse, and The Shins). The Man Man Record Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between was one of Jeff's favorite records in 2020, and he also shares a deep love of Mr. Bungle. Oh, and music would probably be considered his side-hustle; he's also a podcast engineer/producer and on-air personality for Earwolf podcasts Who Charted?, Off Book, Improv for Humans, Comedy Bang Bang, Hollywood Materclass, Estates of Perfection, The Neighborhood listen, and more.
We talked to Brett about growing up in the bay area and how he got interested in music, as well as what it's like for a musician and audio engineer to infiltrate the world of elite sketch, improv, stand-up, and TV/film comedy. Brett has literally been in the room with all of the funniest people working in comedy today.
We also listened to music, like usual, and one of the submissions actually came from an old friend of JD's, and was produced by past guest Andy Patterson...and it was a gem. We talked the plight of small venues, and the Improv4humans4music vinyl record which Brett produced...all the live recordings from musicians who played on the podcast, and proceeds go to NIVA (National Independent Venue Association).

This week we bring you a lovely chat with Henry Wilson of House of Lightning, Floor, and Dove. As usual, our talk covered ground...growing up feral in Florida, riding BMX, playing drums for Flor, recovering from mystery medical issues, bomb tuning, touring with previous guest Jem from DEAD, his writing process, and more. Coming in hot this week with the one and only DJ Nate Carson...drummer for Witch Mountain, owner and operator of Nanotear booking, DJ, author, and retired goat farmer! We cover a lot of ground...growing up on a goat farm in rural Oregon, the founding of Witch Mountain, being a writer, upcoming projects, life as a tour booker/manager (before and during a pandemic), and Nate's early career as a 2D/3D modeler animator. We also listen to and talk about a lot of music...and maybe a little about Star Wars at the end. Oh, and special for this episode...we'll be giving away a signed copy of Nate's book Starr Creek to the first person who can tell us how Nate met our favorite artist Skinner (and back Skinner's horror comic kickstarter, he rules). Message your answer on whichever social media platform you follow us on, or e-mail the answer to [email protected]!

It's "meet Jeff's favorite luthier" week as we welcome James and Thomas from JML Guitars. Lots of discussion about woodworking and guitar building, JML's collaboration with Dunable Guitars, and of course music (James and Thomas play in bands together, and have pretty eclectic taste come to find out). We wrap up by going down the fascinating rabbit hole that is the incredible bands and album art of Eastbreath Records! The audio quality for JML is a little rough, but improves about 30 minutes in!

What goes together better than beer and metal? Not much really. This week our guests are Sam and Michelle Riggins, owners of Cosmic Eye brewing in Lincoln Nebraska. Sam is a reformed musician, brewer, and passionate support of all things music...he's collaborated with metal podcasts, bands (like past guest Spotlights), and is even one of the partner breweries for the upcoming Decibel Metal and Beer fest. We talked to Sam and Michelle about founding a brewery, integrating metal into the branding (the name of the brewery comes from the lyrics of a Mastodon song, with a concept inspired by Black Sabbath), and even starting to run shows at the brewery in Lincoln. Michelle and Sam were nice enough to ship us a box of beer, so we did a little bit of a tasting during the episode, which ruled. As always, we also listened to some music!

This week's episode is something different! Due to a scheduling snafu, JD and Jeff are solo, and running down Heavy Blog is Heavy's top 25 records of the first half of 2021. There is some familiar stuff on the list...and some brand new goodness (and weirdness). Strap in...one hour, 25 songs, no stopping. No guests, no merch table, no Bandcamp picks, no submissions, no fucks given.

This week we sat down with Sarah and Mario from Spotlights, a band that is absolutely blowing up. From catching the ear of Aaron Harris and Chino Moreno with their demo, to getting signed by Ipecac and opening for one of the legendary Mr. Bungle shows at the beginning of 2020, they really are living Jeff's best life, and his envy was out for all to see! We talked about moving to Eugene, the Bay Area, San Diego, Brooklyn, and now Pittsburg...touring with Deftones and Melvins, their love for their friend HUM drummer Bryan St. Pere who just passed away, and losing a tour with Faith No More because of the pandemic. Sarah talked about how Mike Patton told them backstage that he loves their music, and can't figure out exactly why, which is why he loves it. Circular? Definitely. Welcome to the mind of Mike Patton. They have a streamed concert coming up, recorded at St. Vitus in Brooklyn (with past guests Somnuri playing as well). We also listened to a bunch of music, and there were some gems!

Legend time. Call him Blind Marky Felchtone, Richard Yalowitz, or in our case, just Mark...the legendary frontman of Seattle's Zeke. Mark joins us to talk about all things Zeke past and future, coming up in Arkansas, moving to Seattle, recording with Tad Doyle and Jack Endino, riding motorcycles, playing way too fast, recording solos for the Thin Lizzy Tribute record, and raising a kid in a rock-and-roll family. We also listened to music...including an old live video of Jeff's guitar player's band Imperial Spacepod at the Color Box in Seattle in the 90s (a video Mark said he's watched more than once). ALSO...GET SOME INSTANT BONER!

New ep, who dis? We'll keep this short and sweet this week. Doug Walker from MONOLITH (not Monarch), Call of the Wild, and Alexandria Ocasia Nugent rules. What a treat this week...coming at you from the outskirts of London, it's the one and only Pete Holland from Elephant Tree and Trippy Wicked. Elephant Tree put out one of Jeff and JDs favorite records of 2020...HABITS, which includes the song...SAILS. It's a beautiful and brilliant record, so we talked about it, their collaboration with producer Riley MacIntire art Church Studio, Elephant Tree's double-set Psycho Las Vegas adventure, the formation of the band, what Pete's been up to during the pandemic, cloudy "lemonade" in Las Vegas, releasing a record that charted in 2020 and losing all album launch and tour support plans (including a tour with Elder that was booked an never announced), Jeff's mystery affliction that forced us to skip our first week of releases since launch, and MUCH MUCH MORE. Also, while we were recording, Pete's audio kept turning to shit, which we talk about, but in the lovely podcast and video release we have pristine audio for him, so none of our comments will make sense. This is why we don't rely on Zoom for audio if we don't have to.

We're back! Did you miss us? We missed you...so today it's one episode, 2 guests. After a bit of technical difficulties and a jog/bike ride down the street to their apartment, the boys from Brooklyn prog/sludge (?) outfit Somnuri hopped on to regale us with many tales. We dive deep into what it sounds like when 2 drummers write metal, and what kind of animals start band practice at 11:00pm!!! Their new album Nefarious Wave is out now on Blues Funeral recordings, and it rules hard. If you've been jonesing for Remission/Leviathan era Mastodon with a Brooklyn twist, this is the record for you. Snag one at the link below before all the vinyl is gone! This week we got caught up with our good buddy Marc from Santa Cruz's own Doors To Know Where. They released a new record on 5/31 called Darkness Falls, and it's killer. We talk about recording the new record, working with Bob Balch from Fu Manchu, drinking beer, growing up in a musical surfing family that almost sounds like a Hollywood movie version of a Santa Cruz childhood, the Santa Cruz punk scene, and Marc's side gig as a teacher during a pandemic.

Feast your eyes and ears on a couple hours with Aaron Gray, the one man wrecking machine that is part Boston metal musician, part booking agent, part Boston promoter and talent buyer for legendary Boston venues like The Middle East. We go everywhere....even admitting to liking 311. Yup. It went there. Bands...this is a really important one to listen to, because Aaron has great wisdom if you want to get from opening for bands at your local spot to actually getting booked with a real tour booker and on major festivals. On this week's episode we travel down under to Australia for a super-sized music-filled episode with Jem from the band DEAD. Jem is only our second submission-turned-guest, and it was awesome to talk about what the last year has been like in Australia, the Australian scene in general, geography (maps were pulled out), Australian Rednecks, their record label (We Empty Rooms), handcrafting merch, and Jem's history touring in the states. DEAD is a killer quirky noise-ish band with a lot of shared DNA with bands like Big Business and Melvins, and Jem has some really interesting thoughts about everything, so this one went...for a while....but hey, that's just more podcast for you to enjoy! Oh, we also subjected Jem to a sneak peek of a few tracks from the now-released Glory or Death Records Deep Purple Tribute. So yeah...there's that.

Oh man. This episode. We start off by giving you 2 hours of access to the mind of Jadd Shickler...one of the original folks bringing heavy stoner/doom rock and metal to the world with the founding of All That's Heavy and MetorCity Records in the Late 90s/2000s. Fast forward to 2021 and he's working at MagneticEye Records and Ripple Music handling various label operations, AR, and marketing, and owner of the fantastic subscription-based specialty label Blues Funeral Recordings. Jadd is a busy man with an incredible amount of experience...listen up bands...he drops some serious knowledge. He's a also a great guy and we had an awesome chat.
But really, come for the Jadd, but stay for the Bryan Kenney Fresno. If you know, you know, and if you don't...we're excited for you.

This week we sit down with Josh Espinoza from the band Worship and PinUp Artist Management. Josh discussed the concept of a "semi-professional" band, what jobs are good for touring musicians, securing endorsements for himself and his bands (Josh has a very coveted endorsement from Electrical Guitar Company, and has managed to secure much coveted free Taco Bell cash cards for his bands!), which artists he managing are doing good stuff (Wolf King just performed at Roadburn Redux, and Summoning the Lich just had a crazy successful release with 200k streams in the first week). Bands, Josh drops lots of knowledge on the management/promotion side, so listen up.

This week we had a lovely chat with Daron Beck from Pinkish Black, the synth/keyboard and bass duo who have won the hearts and minds of heavy metal fans around the globe. We chatted about Daron's love for album oriented rock, lots of goth shit, the space rock scene in Denton Texas in the 90s, managing TWO Hot Topic Stores, Showbiz Pizza, doing interior design for offices, and a whole bunch of other great stuff! This week it's a new milestone...our first-ever (that we know of) Grammy nominated guest, the incredibly charming Chris Johnson from Deafheaven, Summoner, Doomriders, running live sound, and engineering lots of great recordings, including the Worshipper tracks on the Glory or Death Thin Lizzy and Deep purple tribute and the Magnetic Eye Records "Live at Day of Doom" records featuring Elephant Tree, Domkraft, Horsehunter, and Summoner. Deafheaven released a career retrospective record titled "10 Years Gone" in December 2020 featuring new recordings of old tracks, handled masterfully by their longtime collaborator Jack Shirley.
As always, we covered ground, including Chris' growing love of surfing, getting a car stolen in San Francisco, attending the Grammys, why the headstock on Dingwall basses is so silly, a new live record from Deafheaven, when touring will start again, coming up in the Boston scene (he has a checkered past...thanks Santos!), and his all-time favorite hometown band (Cave In). As a bonus delight, watch all three of us struggle to remember which song Summoner recorded on Magnetic Eye's Black Sabbath tribute (Chris played and recorded it and it's Jeff's favorite Sabbath song, but still we struggled). We also listened to music and stuff...really good crop of submissions this week!

Get ready to hear about Swedish music and culture in this fascinating chat with our first submission-turned-guest Max Malmer from Cavern Deep. If you’ve been following along, you heard us listen to Max’s band in episode 25 (the Return of the Susie) and we were blown away. Turns out Max is a prolific musician and producer from Umeå Sweden, a small town (100K) population in Norland (Northern Sweden) that has produced a shocking number of popular metal and hardcore bands including Meshuggah, Breach, Nagelfar, Cult of Luna, Refused, and Persuader.
Lots of great discussion of music, culture, video game addiction, support for the arts, Swedish military history, Midsommar and penis poles, Attestupa, the Sámi people, and great Swedish bands who don’t make it out of Sweden because they don’t sing in English.

What else can we say but welcome back Susie for our 6-month-aversary, and we went for it...for 3 and a half hours. We go all over...checking in on the Tom Aspaul situation, cocktail hour and the SF coctail club, picking a new bass for Susie, N'awlins, gumbo, changing the way you make music because of a pandemic, a healthy dose of Enver from Disastroid, Susie's metal buddha Hutch, her favorite Baton Roughe bands, and a revelation that she's working on multiple new music projects BECAUSE OF THIS PODCAST. Also, for the first time ever, we listened to a 6 minute song all the way through...well, there was a minor 20 minute detour after the first two minutes, but we got there. The bands delivered and then some this week. Just listen...you know you won't regret it.

This week we bring you a lovely chat with JJ Koczan from The Obelisk, and his bird....birdy? We dug into his involvement in the heavy music scene...how he got started as a journalist, why he runs the Obelisk as largely a one-man show, how to catch the attention of journalists and bloggers (don't start an e-mail to JJ with "Hey guys!", and how he got involved in editing the Roadburn daily magazine. JJ is a lovely, thoughtful, and funny dude who does an incredible amount of heavy lifting for tons of small bands, labels, and promoters.

What a delight this episode is...to finally sit down and chat with the man who created our theme music! Francis is a composer, player, engineer, producer, YouTuber, streamer, creator, and TEACHER. He has all the hats, and despite the pandemic and a pulmonary embolism that could have killed him, he had an amazing year as a creator in 2020, with major music outlets heaping praise on his work as Old Man Wizard, King Gorm, and his solo work. He also just announced that an animated fantasy series he worked on the score for was picked up for distribution...The Spine of Night, produced by Joe Manganiello and Lucy friggin' Lawless. It's really nice to hear that somebody actually had a good year in 2020! Francis is contemplative and has interesting takes on many aspects of the music business. Trust us...listen to this episode and you'll come away with some really great insights on creating music.

What could be a more appropriate for a Valentine's Day episode than a band that is also a couple? This week we talked to Zachary Livingston and Sarah Pendleton of Asphodel Wine. Their story is a heavy metal love story...they met on tour when both Minsk (Zach's Band) and Subrosa (Sarah's band) were supporting Cult of Luna! We cover lots of topics...the pandemic, long distance relationships, sexy time, the writing process, Zach's guitar collection (Zach is a master builder/luthier at Lakland), the mongolian fiddle Zach built for Sarah, and much much more!

Oh man...so excited about this one. We spent time chatting with Jordan Olds, the brains? behind Two Minutes To Late Night. If you don't know Two Minutes, what are you going....click the link below and dive in. Jordan spent the pandemic organizing an incredible group of "Bedroom Covers"...underground musicians covering some of their favorite songs and artists. Well it was underground until he trotted out a cover of Rush's Anthem by Danny Carey, Les Claypool, Bill Kelliher, Claudio Sanchez, Stephen Brodsky, and Jordan himself. That video has over 1.1 million views on YouTube, and subsequent bedroom covers include Jay Weinberg, and even Jay's dad Max (Bruce Springstein) covering The Misfits.
Two Minutes just launched a new live stream series called Splitsville, taking inspiration from 7-inch punk splits where 2 bands cover each other's songs. The series takes advantage of Bandcamp's new live streaming concert platform, and it was brilliant, with Cave In and Every Time I Die covering each other (with exclusive shirts and 7" records available to purchase if you bought a $5 show ticket.
Things you will learn about Jordan:
Stick around for an epic rant about why singers in heavy bands should just go ahead and take vocal lessons, even if it is goofy as hell. Our sincere thanks to Jordan for spending time with us.

This week we sat down and chatted/listened to music with frontman Alex Petralia of East Bay noise rock's Nopes. They released a new record via Magnetic Eye on January 29th 2021 and it's a banger, with some of the best song titles in music history ("Amber is the Color of Your Alert" is our personal favorite). Our talk covered a bunch of topics, but frequently came back to the east bay punk scene, the use of horns in heavy music, and why ska punk was Jeff's only window into punk rock (sad, we know).

Suh, dude! Three audio engineers in a row?! Yep, buckle up because the one and only Andy Patterson (Subrosa, Insect Ark, DONE) is our guest this week.
You know how we often say “this week’s episode is a real treat”, or “this was a fun one” or “this was a wild ride”? Well, there aren’t enough catchy sayings for this one. We really hit the ground running this week! Even before we started recording, this one went in some interesting places. Get ready for some laughs.
Having been in 30+ bands, and recorded at least twice that many, Andy Patterson has seen some stuff and he has stories for days. From receiving a death threat recently to a seemingly empty tent at Hellfest. And from recording Zach De La Rocha voiceovers in his LA apartment for a RATM DVD release to the corduroy hats his mom made for his entire first band, AP shares some good ones.
Stick around for:
-Clean grunge and melting
-A full re-release of Iceburn's catalog on Southern Lord
-Recording bass direct into the mixer with an Ibanez Soundgear on Hephaestus...oof
-Replacing the snare hits on an entire record with a hand "reamped" snare
-The time James Hetfield said, "I know where my dick's been. Most of the time."
-Getting his first death threat
Just a sampling of Andy’s most recent bands, and sorry, no link to his studio website, gotta have the secret password.

This week’s episode is a real treat, featuring Jeff’s friend, and engineer/mixer/producer on both KOOK records Chris Hughes. Chris is a multi-talented engineer, producer, mastering engineer, and musician producing DIY bands from many genres. We’ve actually already done a (semi) blind listen of Chris’ solo project Silent Type on the Billy Goate episode, and he talks about moving to LA and launching Stereo Lunch Mixing Studio. We also get into the music scene growing up in Denver, why he is a fan of Havoc, and if Denver truly is heavier now.
As of 2020, Chris is a full-blown member of the recording academy and Grammy voter (we talk about it). It was killer to catch up, talk about projects Chris has been working on during the pandemic, hear his story of recording a death metal record on the beach in El Salvador, and have some obligatory beer talk.
And remember, we still have 2 contests going for King Buffalo Live at Freak Valley on double LP. Check Facebook and Instagram for the details!

This week is a real treat as we welcome one of the true heroes off modern heavy music. Billy has the longest and most illustrious engineering and production resumes in the world, and has also spent time playing in some incredible bands (played bass in the Melvins). He has incredible knowledge, and from spending time in the studio with him, stories (and puns) for days. We talked to Billy about what he’s been up to during the pandemic, what music he’s working on, his interest in cave paintings, how things are going with his band High Tone Son of a Bitch, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Bonus segment: Bandcamp Claims “IT GOT HEAVY” in 2020, but we’ll be the judge of that
Where we listened to a number of tunes that Bandcamp wrote up as especially HEAVY releases in 2020. Who better than Billy to stamp them HEAVY or NOT HEAVY.
“In times of crisis, we as listeners tend to gravitate towards two modes of musical escapism: Uplifting sounds that remind us of the light at the end of the tunnel and/or earsplitting songs tethered to the hellish here and now. Both camps are equally valid (more on the glass-half-full camp tomorrow). Still, in a year defined by unprecedented isolation and unrest, the catharsis offered by heavy music felt even more ubiquitous and essential. The chaos wasn’t limited to usual suspects like metal, punk, or noise, either; the records featured below offer everything from revolutionary jazz grooves to harrowing electronic breakdowns to ethereal folk harmonies. All of them epitomize the dumpster fire that was 2020—and bid it good riddance.”

This week we bring you a legendary chat/listen with a legendary NYC hardcore pioneer, Armand Majidi, drummer for Sick of it All. We had some serious “moist talk in the jam room” covering how he got started in music and the beginnings of New York Hardcore and Sick of It all. We went all the way from Iranian politics in the 70s and 80s and the links between refugees and the spreading of culture (food mostly) to touring with Korn. And trigger warning, there is a ton of beer and pizza talk, including Armand’s thoughts on the best pizza in all 5 boroughs. We also forced Armand to listen to Kvelertak. And in two moments of serendipity, we randomly picked a German stoner band (Samavayo) who’s lead singer sings in Farsi (which Armand recognized), and how he’s actually been to one of our favorite tiny breweries in Santa Cruz - Sante Adarius! Enjoy it!

Buckle up your big person britches…this goes all over the place. We only got through three submissions, but somehow listened to more music than ever before. Honestly we could write 10 pages of notes about this episode…but just listen to it. John takes a call from his sister, drops the news that Moon Tooth is recording a new record, takes a pee break (more than once), shows off records, talks about Orcs boning in Mordor. We deep dive into Serbian label LIBRARION’S catalogue because why not and we uncover PUSSEYDONE and some deeply disturbing Serbian death cult pop with sinister voices in the background. He also tells a story about accidentally putting a chair on top of Pound's tour van (he had no idea it was theirs)...so now we have a full-fledged Blynd Submyshynz shared universe.
John also drops out a few times, but always comes back. John gives us the lowdown on one of his early bands Rice Cultivation Society (also featuring Nick Lee from Moon Tooth), and talks about Nick’s Band Exemption. Check the links below, but if you listen to Rice Cultivation Society and Exemption, Moon Tooth’s crazy mix suddenly makes sense. At the end of the episode we tacked on 2 full tracks: Trust from Moon Tooth’s latest LP Crux, and Blood Heaven from Exemption’s Public Cemetery Party. Stick it out…two killer tracks!
Oh, and if you take only one thing from this episode, let it be this: if the government would only fund the arts like they do in other countries, maybe Americans will learn to f*ck better. That's some grade-A John Carbone wisdom.

For episode 13 we sat down and chatted with Christian Lembach, the charming singer and guitar player for pummeling noise rock outfit Whores. Turns out Christian is a chill homebody who has a side-hustle in Atlanta's film and television industry, and a cat named Taco. Taco Cat. We end up talking a lot about how important relationships are to DIY artists, and how strange a media empire eOne is, and what it was like to grow up on tiny Marco island in Florida. We dig back into the Bay Area's history of Noise Rock, including classic bands like Grotus. We discuss a recurring theme...that music is literal magic. He drops a little news bomb...that they've joined Nathan Carson's Nanotear booking agency...when shows happen again that is.
At the merch table. Christian shows off his new Hanoi Rocks recorded, and Jeff flashes a couple of new Boss Keloid records, and his new bass built by JML custom guitars. It's a stunner.
Christian informs who our new favorite old band is...the almighty Asschapel! And then we wrap up with a really touching discussion of Christian's favorite hometown band Smoke. Smoke was a legendary unique dark folk/funeral dirge indie rock band from Atlanta. Two members, who Christian was good friends with, have passed, and he talks about how the hopelessness they expressed touched him because they were a part of his wild youth and ultimately his sobriety. He talks about how he was lucky to get away from drugs, and how his gratitude for getting sober fuels his musical drive. Take a listen, and watch the documentary about Benjamin Smoke's life linked below.

Episode 12…the conclusion of our lengthy interview with the oft-referred to (in this podcast at least) Trevor William Church, the brainchild behind Beastmaker, Haunt, and a bunch of other very cool metal projects.
Kicking off with the Merch Table, Jeff shows off a limited Earthless live record, Trevor shows us a MIJ BC Rich that he bought from Russia. Hmmmm. Long story short, he doesn't like it...because he can't "go" on it...needs a painted neck...so he can be gnarly. And them....Trevor shows off 2 of his dad's basses, including the 1957 P-bass his dad used to record Montrose, Van Morrison, and all the Sammy Hagar records. It's beat to shit, but the scars are earned. Then he shows off an early 80s Grover Jackson Electric Church custom Charvel that was made for his dad. Also live bathroom breaks because JD has a small bladder. Also his dad was not a fan of Beastmaker's "Satan shit". He talks about his love of Japanese pedals from the 80s...his board is mostly Orion pedals, but he has 100+ Japanese pedals from the 80s in a display case in his house. We learn about Trevor's distaste for cockroaches, and how Decibel magazine has supported him. We wrap up with some California heavy talk, and Trevor gushes about his buddy Francis Anger Roberts and his many projects (Old Man Wizard, King Gorm, etc.).

We wrap up with Haunt's take on the classic St. Vitus' Dance off of Black Sabbath Volume 4...part of our ongoing dive into the Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath Redux and Best Of cover records. Trevor decided to flip this song on it's head and turn it into a NWOTHM banger with endless guitar solos. Of course he did.

Episode 11…the episode so big it became 2 episodes. This week, part one of our lengthy interview with the oft-referred to (in this podcast at least) Trevor William Church, the brainchild behind Beastmaker, Haunt, and a bunch of other very cool metal projects.
We talk about sparkling water and sparkling weed, how Trevor got started, growing up the son of Electric Bill Church, bass player for Montrose, Sammy Hagar, and more. He then misses an amp delivery (but gets the footswitch at least). “Hey guys…I think a half-stack just arrived at my door”. Trevor got an endorsement from ENGL…and they sent him some goodies. We dig some info out of him on amp setups for recording…great details for superfans.
We listened to the first batch of submissions, and we have a side chat about how much info you give out on your Bandcamp page about your music. Should you call your music “mesmerizing” or “experimental”…what if you aren’t? Also, Trevor comes up with a brilliant band name…Surrounded by Cockstones.

We wrap up with Night Closing in off of Hysteria’s first album (Hysteria is Trevor’s collaboration with Jake Nunn from Hellfire) because it’s rad as hell. Stay tuned next week for part 2…the merch table, my our weird Bandcamp selection, and the last 3 submissions. It’s insane! Trevor may or may not show off basses from his dad’s collection, including the P bass he used to record with Van Morrison, Montrose, and more.

Episode 10 starts with a bang! Alyssa talks about playing in Eight Bells and Joining Lord Dying, how she started playing music (on a toy piano). She also talks about her other hustles including the digital portrait she did of Jeff’s dog Monkey, which leads to chatting about her spectacular pitbull/husky pooch Crom…who knows the “riddle of steal”, and doing cover art for the Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath Vol. 4 tribute record. "Sabbath chat" continues with another great story about attempting to sing NIB while too drunk. Alyssa is another in our long line of guests with a shady “older cousin” who introduced her to lots of music. Oh, and WILDCARD BITCH!
At the merch table we check out Alyssa's new nothing LP the Great Dismal (which is nearly impossible to find online now). JD shows off the new Zeal and Ardor LP, and Iceburn's classic Hephaestus on vinyl. Jeff shows off the Ecstatic Vision LP he bought after the Nighthawk episode and a live Isis record on Ipecac titled 2.25.10. Then Alyssa whips out a new pedal because "sometimes gear just shows up at our house"; this one was an Abominable Electronics Hellmouth that was a gift from Kurt Ballou.
We wrap up talking about Philly heavy music scene, and Alyssa highlights Fight Amp as a key influence for her. We veer into politics, where Alyssa reminds us that after the Spanish Flu we got the roaring 20s, so that’s good. She also talks about going to art school and why you need to know the rules to really effectively break them. Alyssa mentions the "Mandy Thing" and why it’s OK to put pink everywhere now (even in metal), and talks about being a woman in a bunch of traditionally male environments (Metal, tattooing). Stay to the end and listen to Alyssa's picks!

Blynd Submyshynz is a podcast from the wild minds of Jeff Wilson (KOOK, Glory or Death Records, Heavy San Jose) and JD Norton (Heavy San Jose). Our goal is to expose you to new music in the DIY scene, and hang out with musicians we know or want to know better. Every week we'll take submissions from any band who finds our email address ([email protected])...listen to them for the first time with our special guest and give honest reactions, and talk about things affecting DIY musicians around the globe.
We come in hot with drinks and ice clinking ASMR, and talk to Amy about teaching piano, jamming at home, coming up as a classical pianist, and her old punk band that played the Warped tour (while she was 8.5 months pregnant).
The merch table was busy this week, covering Haunt, Zeal & Ardor, Mastodon, and a new pedal that Amy's husband Jon gifted her.
We shout out to Bizarre Albums and Tony Thaxton for covering Plantasia. Of course we had to sample some of Mort’s other music, including Cathedral of Pleasure, from his album Music for Sensuous Lovers.
We then talk about Year of the Cobra’s latest release, a cover of Black Sabbath’s Planet Caravan on the Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath tribute release. Amy then spills the beans that they recorded a track for a Blue Oyster Cult cover project that was started by the late Steve Hanford (rest in peace Thee Slayer Hippy), and is being completed by Steve’s partner Ian Watts and put out on Ripple Music.
We spend a few minutes talking about what a cool and weird lineup their label Prophecy Productions has. Also...Jadd Shickler...come on baby...be our guest! And stick around after we wrap up, because we dropped the full version of their cover of Planet Caravan at the end! And maybe we got a little political at the end.

In the eighth episode of Blynd Submyshynz, we talk to Nick Harris, drummer for Armed for Apocalypse and booker/agent for Atomic Music Group. This one is a a real treat because we talked to Nick while he was in the apartment above Kurt Ballou's GodCity Studio in Salem Ma., where A4A is busy recording their next record. We of course talk all things Kurt Ballou and GodCity, and Nick drops a ton of wisdom from the recording session with some cool stories about working with Kurt and his team.
Nick goes through the history of the band, from starting the band in 2007, getting signed by Trevor Phipps and Ironclad/Metal Blade. He talks about kickstarting a UK tour, what it's like being a booking agent when there are no shows, what hip hop we all listen to, how much JD and Nick love Far (and Cast Iron Hike), how bands decide on song order when making records, why it's important to be close with your bandmates. Finally we listen to Mass Oblation off of A4As last EP, Palm Reader, and threaten again to have a special episode where we listen to the first music we recorded...Nick's in!
We also hit the Merch Table to look at a couple of records JD got, including Far and Cast Iron Hike, and then Jeff took a minute to show off the Glory or Death Records Thin Lizzy tribute record he worked on.

In the sixth episode of Blynd Submyshynz, we talk to Nighthawk, bass player and lead singer for Heavy Temple. Strap in, because this is a wild one. We talk about festivals in general, and the time we saw Heavy Temple at Psycho Las Vegas...there's a Psycho slide shows, stories about sharing the elevator with Abbath, and our friend Stradton's legendary Psycho spreadsheet going around on Instagram. Nighthawk talks about listening to Billy Idol on the stoop every Saturday. Somehow the trailer for the new Nicholas Cage movie Jiu Jitsu comes up, as do Toby Keith, Guy Fieri, Sex with Legolas, pornographic cryptid fanfiction, and the fact that our friend Gareth produced one of this weeks blind submissions. Also, at the Merch Table Jeff whips out his Pound nightpants and the original painting Adam Burke did for KOOK's first album.
