Didn’t I Just Feed You is a candid weekly podcast about feeding our families — because, man, kids need to eat a lot. And frequently too! Co-hosts Stacie Billis and Meghan Splawn dig into everything from the high highs and low lows of meal planning to coping with picky eaters, the joys of dining out with kids to real-life wellness for families, all with a mission to make family meal time more fun and less stressful for busy parents. Armed with culinary prowess, practical advice, guest experts ranging from celebrity chefs to everyday parents in the trenches (you know, the real experts), a microphone and, yes, sometimes whiskey, Stacie and Meghan make life as the family cook easier. Or at least funnier.
The podcast Didn’t I Just Feed You is created by Stacie Billis and Meghan Splawn. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
We love a good plan-ahead moment, but they aren’t always possible. These are our favorite last-minute holiday recipes to keep you in your back pocket, because we also love being real. And! An important reminder:

Honestly, it will help even if you have listened before: we specifically chose this episode because it’s chock full of important annual reminders that will help you keep it both relaxed and delicious.

Today we’re sharing an episode from our friend Maggie Hoffman at The Dinner Plan. Every week, Maggie chats with a great cook about their go-to weeknight recipes, the cookbooks they couldn’t live without, and how they figure out dinner night after night even in challenging seasons. This week, Maggie talks with Dan Souza of America’s Test Kitchen about how to really prep ahead for Thanksgiving, and what he’ll make for dinner before the holiday hits. Grab the recipe and cookbook recommendations for free at The Dinner Plan on Substack.
Don’t know what to cook for the holidays? We’ve got you covered with four different winter holiday menus — no thinking on your part required. Also! An important reminder:

Surprise! We’re back with a fun bonus. We were recently interviewed by our friends at Tink Media and, instead of just writing out our answers, we recorded them — and now we’re excited to share them with you! We’ve learned a lot over the last 6 years of producing Didn’t I Just Feed You — about ourselves, each other, food and the emotional weight that it carries for so many, entrepreneurship, and (so much) more. But these are the 10 most important things that we learned that we hope you’ll take with you too. We hope you’ll listen and walk away feeling like you can (mostly) stay sane and well fed. Xo

What happens when a dream job disappears into thin air?
Today’s episode of Thank You for Your Interest feels like a good gossip sesh and you’re invited. Host Rebekah Sebastian interviews Morgan, an entertainment journalist who channeled her pandemic boredom into a booming business. When industry leaders took notice Morgan was sure her big break was just around the corner; but a passage of time and a social media discovery forced Morgan to re-evaluate everything.
Morgan’s optimism is contagious, sparking a lively debate between Rebekah and Samantha about their personal preferences for how they like to be rejected from a job.
Stick around for the Not Safe for Work (NSFW) segment at the end of the show, featuring listener voicemails. This week — Cody learns the hard way that first impressions don’t matter if nobody is there to meet you.

This one’s a little different: We were just chatting one afternoon, sharing hard feelings about how we’ve been eating and feeding our kids, and we decided to turn on the mic. Our hope in sharing this raw moment is to show that the responsibility of feeding a family and helping shape another human’s relationship with food is heavy sometimes. We all feel unsure in moments. We’re all hard on ourselves. We all want the best for our kids, but can only manage to do the bare minimum sometimes. But at least we have each other.
We’ve been doing some reflecting on the way that we qualify food. Does feeding your family “good” and “clean” foods make you a better parent? A better steward of the environment? An overall better person? And if not, what’s the point of labeling food good or bad, clean or dirty? We dig into some of these questions and explore why doing so as the family cook might be important to the people we feed.
In the second installment of our new series, How We Feed, we’re chatting with Kristen Chase of Cool Mom Picks about feeding a family as a single parent. As it turns out, a lot of what Kristen has learned about being the only grownup in a house full of kids who need to be fed is instructive for all family cooks.

Who else is in another season of cooking burnout? If you’re anything like us, you’d rather be out in spring weather, schlepping between practices, or even clipping toenails than planning and cooking yet another dinner. We’re here to say that it’s okay and there are ways to honor where you are and still get your family fed. We promise.

Feeding a child starts the minute they are born, yet very little feeding education is made available to parents during pregnancy. What many of us expect to be a natural act can actually turn out to be complicated and confusing. Erica Campbell of The Milk Manual talks to us about early feeding and gives breastfeeding tips to make those first few months of feeding more joyful, no matter what baby ends up eating, breastmilk, formula, or a combination of the two.

Cooking and cleaning, they go together like a horse and carriage (or, ahem, love and marriage). Whatever the saying, the point is that if you cook, you inevitably have to clean, so we’re sharing our favorite cleaning products for the kitchen and — because we can’t help ourselves — the rest of the house too.

If you’re an omnivore who has ever sought cooking advice, chances are you’ve been told to consider buying “quality” meat from your local butcher. Ahem: perhaps even by us. In this episode, we chat with 4th generation butcher and founder of Seemore Sausage, Cara Nicoletti, about why this advice matters and how to take it without breaking the bank. (Or dying of intimidation.)
In our new ongoing series, How We Feed, we speak with family cooks to whom mainstream food media doesn’t normally speak. We’re kicking things off with food writer Kim Foster who talks to us about how she thinks about feeding her foster family.
In each of these 15 minute episodes, we’ll walk you all the way through one recipe and then list five others. All in, you’ll get 6 easy weeknight dinner ideas that we’ve tested.

And, yes, you should have a latke playbook even if you don’t celebrate the holiday. We say, latkes for all!
It’s time for our annual best cookbooks of the year episode with Brian Stewart of the Salt + Spine podcast. A Didn’t I Just Feed You tradition, this episode is a go-to wishlist of cookbooks for the family cook — and the people who we want to cook for us more. Ditch all the other best cookbooks of 2021 lists: this one is curated specifically for your busy family life
Thanksgiving sides and desserts may be the best part of every Thanksgiving meal (don’t at us!), but we know that cooking the turkey is what takes up the most time and space in your home cook brain. So this year, we’re talking turkey with a Butterball Turkey Talk-Line Expert who gives us all the easy tips for how to cook a turkey… calmly and successfully.
Our 2021 holiday gift guide is here with kitchen, cooking and food gifts for everyone from the family cook to the kid who loves being in the kitchen (or the science of cooking!). Most people cook and everyone loves to eat, so there’s truly something here for everyone on your list. Yourself included.
Holiday cookie season is around the corner, but first we’re taking a step back. We speak to cookie expert Jesse Szewczyk about everything you need to know about baking cookies. From types of cookies to cookie baking techniques, we get the lowdown on how to master all types of cookies, from everyday treats to holiday sweets.
Nothing is more exciting than prepping our pantries for fall and holiday baking — but then what to do with all the ingredients? We talk to cookbook author and New York Times Cooking senior editor, Genevieve Ko, about all the things we need for fun, affordable, and delicious fall baking, and also get her ideas for how to use it all up so that we’re not stuck with all the same ingredients next fall baking season
Feeding teens can feel alarmingly high stakes. Between diet culture, social media, changing bodies and schedules, hormones, and their growing independence, it’s often hard to know where parents should define boundaries. We speak to a registered adolescent dietitian, Bracha Kopstick, who specializes in teen nutrition to help us feel calm and confident raising tweens and teens to have a positive relationship with food and their bodies.
No matter how you’re celebrating Halloween, one thing is true: it would be great to get a filling meal into everyone’s bellies before the candy onslaught. This year, we’ve got tons of homemade (and semi-homemade) options that cover everything from utilitarian meals that get the job done quickly to cute festive dinners to low-cook crowdpleasers for gathering with family and friends.
There’s a magic strategy that lives between meal prepping and meal planning, and this week’s guest, Cassy Joy Garcia, has mastered it: cook once, eat twice. From a mindset shift to concrete strategies, we talk to Cassy about how to spend less time cooking while eating fresh homemade meals every night, no boring repeats.
The hardest part of feeding a kid — at any age! — is figuring out snacks. Snacking feels near-constant and can cost an arm and a leg. Yet it is an essential part of every person’s diet, so we’re going back to basics and brainstorming both homemade and store-bought snack ideas for all kids, from toddlers to teens.
After 18 months of nearly constant cooking and eating at home, we’re looking to refresh our kitchens without spending too much time or money. From thoughts on organization to playing with color and decor, interior designer David Quarles IV shares simple ideas for breathing new life into a space that we have worn out.
The key to avoiding school lunch packing drudgery is not being more creative the morning of, but rather making sure that you’ve set yourself up for success. When your fridge and pantry are well packed with a variety of ingredients, it’s so much easier to stay inspired — or at least keep it fresh. This is our comprehensive list of what we put in our carts for back-to-school grocery shopping.
In our new series Use It Up, we talk about how to make best use of ingredients that we tend to find lingering (maybe even languishing) in our fridges. First up, summer produce: It’s that time of year when we buy up the last of summer produce in an exuberant frenzy — without a plan. So now what with all that zucchini and basil?
If you’re anything like us, you’ll agree that September is the new January. The beginning of a new school year brings that high energy for cleaning and reorganizing. We’re making the most of it with Kenika Williams, a professional organizer who we tapped for tips and tricks for getting all that lunchbox gear in order.
Packing vegetables as part of school lunch is less about ensuring that said veggies necessarily get eaten and more about relieving the pressure on dinner to deliver all of the veggie exposure in day. Plus, serving up vegetables when you’re not around to manage what your kid eats is incredibly powerful (and sometimes even has surprising results!). So this week is all about creative ways to pack vegetables in school lunch — there are more ways than you might think!
Are you vegan curious, but afraid that your food won’t taste delicious? Or worse, that the kids won’t think that it tastes good? We’ve got answers! This week, Lauren Toyota of Hot For Food spills all her secrets for how to make vegan cooking taste great to all eaters, plant-based or not.
Every summer we make a mental bucket list of foods we want to cook, eat, and savor while we can. Because, before you know it, there will be a never-ending parade of apples, winter squash, and long cooked stews. Here are all the things we’re determined to eat and cook before summer ends and that we hope you’ll take time to enjoy too.
The question of what qualifies as a sandwich has long been debated, but that’s not what we’re talking about today. We figure we’re all, more or less, on the same page about what a sandwich is, but maybe not as much about how they can save us during our busiest times. So this week is all about how sandwiches — from the lunchbox variety to dinner sammies — can help make our transition to back-to-school way easier.
Our favorite episode during our favorite time of year! Nothing beats summer eating and we’re making sure to share what’s on our tables now so that we can inspire each other and, hopefully, all of you with plenty of time for all of us to act on the inspiration. We’re not letting a single summer dish get away this year!
Hot dogs and burgers get all the summer glory, but if you ask us, summer is the perfect time to enjoy seafood. Not only does seafood pair perfectly with summer produce and the light touch of summer-style cooking, but to the delight of many children, it can also be messy and fun. What better way to introduce kids to seafood than to have them dig in with sauces, melted butter, and newspaper on the table?
Both the slow cooker and Instant Pot are strongly associated with cold weather cooking thanks to how well they handle soups, stews, and other cozy foods. But if you ask us, anything that cooks dinner with a plug, is a summer lifesaver. Here’s how we use both kitchen tools to make summer cooking easier and way less hot.
We see you, and we are you. We are also tired of cooking and out enjoying the summer. So this week, it’s all about how NOT to cook. Or perhaps more accurately, how to cook less, since we all still have mouths to feed and aren’t made of money. But seriously, let’s keep it to a minimum. Here’s how.
With life opening up, more of us are planning on hosting and visiting family and friends this summer — but it’s not a complete return to “normal”. In this episode, we share our favorite summer entertaining tips and tricks that still stand, and also talk about the ways in which we’re shifting our summer entertaining habits for a post-Covid world.
Nearly every cuisine in the world includes rice. After all, this agricultural staple has built countries and shaped global economies. This week, we talk with Parisa Parnian, Chef JJ Johnson, and Christine Gallary about the role that rice played on their family tables growing up, and its place in their kitchens today.
You know that meme about how family vacation is just doing the same stuff in a new place? It’s funny, because it’s true — at least when it comes to feeding kids. So we’re sharing our favorite strategies for vacation meals and meal planning ideas that work for all kinds of family travel.
This week we're answering a listener's question on food for picnics. Katie Kurtz asked "Hi hello, I’m a mother of 3 under 4 and I live in California’s armpit. Is there an episode of picnic meals? Or do any of you lovely humans have picnic ideas for kids who eat too many sandwiches and don’t like meat?" We've had similar questions for family meal ideas for eating on the sidelines during summer sports, ideas to bring to the pool, listen for all our best ideas.
Grilling season is officially underway, and who better than The Grill Dads to help us kick things off. This week, Mark and Fey answer all of your burning grilling questions (see what we did there?) — and then some.
Rice is the third largest agricultural commodity, and the only of the top three grown primarily for human consumption. That makes it the most important food crop to human sustenance, providing humans worldwide with a whopping one-fifth of our caloric intake. Rice is that important. And kind of tricky to cook — until you know how to do it right.
What We're Cooking and Eating Now is one of your favorite series, but it is not-so-secretly one of Stacie and Meghan's favorites too. Tune in to hear how Stacie is feeding less meat to her growing dudes and how Meghan is using up freezer leftovers as she preps for her cross-country move.
In this episode, we go over how to make muffins and why you should. The most flexible of the quick bread batters, muffins can be made sweet or savory, serious or fun, for breakfast, snack time or lunch. You can make them ahead, you only need one bowl, they freeze well, and most importantly, they bring serious food joy with very little work.
If you haven’t already heard, Meghan is moving her family back across the country from Boise, Idaho to Chattanooga, Tennessee next month. Even though she’s done one long haul move with a family of four, she asked our listeners group for their best advice and partnered with her own experience is giving advice for moving a family and packing your kitchen, plus what to eat along the way!
There’s no magic to great cooking, but there are some tricks of the trade that can help any cook improve their final dish. From applying high heat to using spices in layers, these are our favorite ways to boost flavor in your cooking.
Many parents feel pressure to be more eco-friendly in the kitchen, but is that a viable answer to the climate crisis? We speak with environmental educator Isaias Hernandez of @queerbrownvegan about adopting an intersectional lens to better understand the relationship between environmentalism and feeding our families, and to empower manageable action in a quest to be more eco-friendly.
Feels like just yesterday we we’re publishing a mini episode on emergency readiness for your kitchen and quietly preparing for a few weeks of lockdown. One year into pandemic life, we’re taking a look back at what quarantine has taught us about feeding our families, grocery shopping, and ourselves.
Food at restaurants just tastes better, it isn’t just that someone else cooked the food either. Chefs know lots of little tricks for prepping, cooking, and serving food. It takes a special kind of magic and skill to turn chef’s dishes into recipes that home cooks can master, and this week’s guest Christine Gallary has all that and more. Christine is one of Meghan’s colleagues at Kitchn.com, but she spent the last 3 years working on an epic Chinese food cookbook. She distills everything she learned to help us cook better too.
Everyone loves a great dip — especially kids — and making it a part of dinner adds much needed fun to the table. While we’ll never complain about eating chips and guac as a meal, we have tips for how to serve dips in a way that turns them into a well-rounded meal that satisfies everyone, even picky eaters.
Both Stacie and Meghan’s kids are headed back to school full time this spring. With Covid precautions in place, they’re both making adjustments to changed lunch room protocols and just straight up getting back in the swing of packing lunches 5 days a week. This month’s mini episode is a a little look at our current routine and what things we are doing a little different for a new lunch room landscape.
A new season calls for a new round of what we’re cooking and eating now. Meghan’s moving fast into spring with big, chopped salads while Stacie hangs a bit longer in the space between winter and spring. Yet! There’s so much overlap in the flavors and ingredients we’re cooking with these days.
One of the hardest parts of cooking is the cleaning that ensues, so it’s no surprise that we’re regularly asked about how to best clean as you go. We chat with cleaning expert Taryn Williford about how to set yourself up to cook without creating a huge mess — or at least without creating a mess that makes you feel overwhelmed and like you’d rather never cook again.
One of the most common parent questions about plant-based eating — from vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore parents alike — is whether a solely plant-based diet is safe. This year, we’re opting out of January’s onslaught of healthy eating content and going back to basics that we’re pretty sure everyone can agree on: the value of starting the day with a well-balanced meal. We’ll never ditch cereal (we’re not monsters!), but we are collecting fresh ideas for making quick, well-balanced breakfasts. And nothing that requires us to give up sleep is allowed.
We spend a lot of time talking about family dinners, school lunches, and easy breakfast ideas, but celebration cakes have been one of the most requested episodes. Both Stacie and Meghan have kids celebrating birthdays this week, so it felt like the perfect time to talk about the ever enduring tradition of birthday cake. We’re sharing our family traditions, recipes, and tips for making everyday cakes into celebratory treats!

Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of weight loss, experiences with disordered eating, and other sensitive topics related to dieting and diet culture.
We’re kicking off the summer season with bikini body talk! When we recently confided in each other that we feel guilty —and even like bad feminists — for wanting to lose weight, we realized it was time to talk. In this week’s episode, we chat about body positivity, Intuitive Eating, Healthy At Every Size, and the anti-diet movement (or are they movements?), and how we reconcile each with our privilege, desires, and motherhood.

We almost titled this "53 Minutes of Meghan Complaining," but agree with writer Cleo Wade: Complaints have no magic. Still, we have a lot to say about the weight we feel being the ones responsible for feeding our families & we have a hunch we're not alone. That's why it felt important to have the conversation. Here it is, but with only the complaints that led to compassion & helpful ideas. Because the real magic happens when families (kids included) find their own, personal sense of balance.

In episode 5, we revealed the truth about eating out with kids. Take all of that, from worrying about impending meltdowns to overtipping staff who rightly hate your children, & do it early in the day so that you can go home buzzed & have to CONTINUE PARENTING FOR HOURS. That's brunch. But if you insist, we have tips for how to survive — or maybe even make it fun. Or at least easy & delicious.

This week is all about nachos — but not for the reason you might expect. Because would we ever dedicate a whole episode to game day food just because of the World Series? (We kid. We know it’s a super white Maroon 5 concert.) No, we’re talking nachos because they are one of the most underrated family meals around. We’ll tell you why, fill you in on all the gloriously easy ways you can use nachos to make a fast meal packed with good stuff your kids will actually eat & give tips on how to build them perfectly. Food writers, editors, and recipes developers love good food and want to spread food joy. Truly, we do! But we also have jobs that rely on selling magazines and getting enough clicks to sell ads on the sites that hire us. So sometimes we can get a bit, well, aggressively helpful, as Meghan puts it.
In this episode, Stacie and Meghan get honest about the holiday cooking tips, kitchen strategies, and eating mindsets that we find actually helpful to get us through the holidays not just feeling sane, but feeling happy and focused on what matters most: spending time with our families.

Not sure how to manage sugar in your house? Press play now. Because if there’s one episode from which you’ll walk away with a blueprint to take action, this is the one.
In our second of three episodes exploring sugar, renowned child nutrition expert Jill Castle brings her magic as a long-time expert and mom of four. Every bit of what Jill says is shared mom-to-mom, yet still manages to be a concrete expert tip shared without judgement. Even when Stacie decides she hasn’t been handling dessert well — for years. But it’s cool, because Jill walks her through what to do. And shares plenty of tips so that you’ll walk away with a plan of what to do too.

There’s something terrible lurking in our pantries. And you bought it knowingly. Even worse? It’s hiding in other foods you bought, too, some of which you may be aware of, but many of which you aren’t. Creepy, right? Even creepier is that some people consider it poison. Even worse, our kids — our precious BABIES — are addicted to it. It’s SUGAR!

Interviewing is an art we’re still mastering, so perhaps it’s no surprise that our very first curveball comes courtesy of Food Network star Aarti Sequeira, who you may not know is also a trained journalist.
We interviewed Aarti for our series on picky eating, but she managed to expand the conversation in such a compelling way that we turned it into a stand-alone episode. There was talk of picky eaters, but Aarti tapped into much something larger — so we had to also. Welcome to something different this week.

In the last episode in our three-part series on picky eaters, we explored the topic from perspectives on two ends of the age spectrum: Amy Palanjian of Yummy Toddler Food spoke to us as about picky young ones while Debbie Koenig chimed in about older picky eaters.
Does it get better? Does how we intervene when they are young improve our picky eaters as they grow up? We may never really know, but talking to each other helps. And maybe that’s what matters most: Helping each other so that we can all relax and let go a little.

In part two of the three-part series on picky eating, Stacie and Meghan chat with TV host and cookbook author Melissa d’Arabian. The mom of four is best known for her budget-friendly family meals, but also spent a great deal of time digging into the root causes of picky eating and trying to shift her daughters’ picky habits for the Food Network video series, The Picky Eaters Project.
With practical tips, a shocking (and totally hilarious) you-can-do-it-tonight takeaway, and non-judgy attitude, Melissa shares what she learned from the experience, including reflections on how successful it was now that her kids are older.

This week, Stacie and Meghan kick off their three-part series on picky eaters. Stacie shares her point of view as a child development expert who’s researched and worked extensively with picky eaters, though she won’t exactly call herself an expert…
See, it's kind of complicated. Because in the end, only you hold the answers to unlocking your picky eater's potential — or at least not making things worse by battling with them. Listen for how Stacie and Meghan think you can deal with pickiness in your home, and stay sane doing it.

Mention meal prepping and visions of spending our entire Sunday in the kitchen dance in our heads. But is this really what it takes?
We chatted with the queen of meal prep, Tracy Benjamin of Shutterbean, to find out. Because we had a feeling there might be a different way. As it turns out, there are several different ways. And if you find the one that's right for you, you might even start to think about meal prepping as a form of self care.
Go figure.

Admit it: Six o'clock on a weeknight is the worst time to be the family cook. The kids are cranky, everyone is hungry, and who knows what your picky 3-year old is going to actually eat tonight. Staring into the fridge wondering what the hell you're going to pull out is one way to get the job of feeding your family done, but what if there was a better way? In the first part of our two part meal planning mini series, Meghan walks us through the magic of meal planning and Stacie asks the tough practical questions about whether meal planning is right for every family and what we can do instead to take the stress out of Wednesday night dinners, because Wednesday are the worst!
Join us as we dive into meal planning for real, family life.

Here's an idea: Let's take feeding kids public! We’ll bring them to a restaurant full of other adults who aren't compelled to think that our kids are cute. We’ll pay to make the experience happen. And let’s throw waiters who are loathe to deal with our small people in the mix, too, so we can pay them extra for having to serve us. Sounds fun, right?
This, friends, is dining out with children. Let us speak of why we partake of this ritual. Because, yes, we believe it's worth it. (But, yes, it's possible we're just crazy.)

Welcome to the show notes for our very first mini episode. Every once and a while, when we just can't resist talking about something in the news or happening in the culture, we'll quickly hop on our mics for a quick chat.
Mini episodes will be topical and a hot 30 minutes (or so). Just enough time to vent, process, and download with each other — and YOU. Because that's what Didn't I Just Feed You?! is all about: parents having conversation, healthy (respectful!) debate, and supporting each other.
So, listen up and chime in (here, on Instagram, or on Facebook). We KNOW you have something to say about this week's topic: Gwyneth Paltrow and her $250 million Goop empire.

In the last episode of this three part series on school lunches, Stacie and Meghan explore the lunch box from three wildly different lenses. We ask an elementary school teacher to dish on what really happens in the lunchroom. Laura Fuentes of MOMables talks us through the perspective shift you'll need when your kiddos is diagnosed with a food allergy — and has great advice for what other parents in the classroom can do to support those allergic kids. Finally we talk with chef and artist Jenny Dorsey about her "Privilege" project and what it is like to grow up eating authentic Chinese cuisine in a cafeteria full of corn dogs and frozen pizza.

It’s easy to think about packing school lunch as just another task to check off your list. You look for tips on how to do it more efficiently. You seek out ways to urge, or maybe even incentivize, your kids to get with the program (and eat their damn lunch). And do this on repeat 180 times during the school year. It’s not much fun, but as long as you get through, it’s good enough.
This week, Stacie and Meghan speak to Catherine McCord of Weelicious who inspires them to think about school lunch as so much more. Not more work, but more freedom for parents and more opportunity for kids. Her tips are more than practical — they actually inspire you to shift your perspective.
