What happens when organizations don’t address digital ethics effectively? And how much is possible when they do?
DWG’s Director of Knowledge, Shimrit Janes, joins host Nancy Goebel in the Digital Workplace Impact studio for their final conversation on inclusivity in the digital workplace. Shimrit is the author of DWG’s recent thought-provoking three-part research series, which includes The inclusive digital workplace: 2. Forging digital ethics.
The conversation uncovers the nature of ethics and how a dedicated digital strain is now emerging – one that’s being tested even further with the emergence of generative AI. With real-life examples from Oxfam and Comcast, the two bring to life how new ways of working can be nurtured in the digital workplace, with approaches and pace to benefit both employees and organizations.
In the ever-evolving digital workplace, there’s a point at which what’s possible with technology, what’s appropriate from a legal perspective and what’s preferable to a practitioner will intersect or conflict. It’s here that ethics and trust come into play.
Shimrit proposes that widening our conversations on choices, impacts and comfort levels can open up new opportunities, and assist those exploring emergent technologies in ways that are healthy.

Digital inclusivity is a way of working, a culture through which the digital workplace is intentionally made welcoming to everyone – but how can you successfully create this?

If you’d said the word ‘hybrid’ a few years ago, it most likely would have been in connection with a car. Say the word ‘hybrid’ today and it instantly brings to mind the workplace. Following the ‘great working from home experiment’ of 2020/2021, and as the return to the office continues, one big question keeps igniting passionate debates: ‘Where will people work from?’.
In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, host Nancy Goebel is joined by DWG’s Director of Knowledge, Shimrit Janes; together they discuss the complex and multidimensional issues that can arise from this question.
In theory, it might seem like a simple question, with a simple answer. People who are desk-based will work either from an office or from home, often flexing between the two. The ‘hybrid’ at hand is therefore simply a workforce that exists across both locations – or is it?
Earlier this year, Shimrit produced one of DWG’s latest research reports, entitled Hybrid work reimagined: Advanced practices for connected workplaces. Picking up on this, Nancy and Shimrit discuss some of the ideas the research uncovered and consider what may come next.

“Hybrid working is a way of making our employees and customers happier, and allows us to make our organization a healthy and productive one.”
One of the hottest topics in our industry circle right now is the notion of hybrid working. Isabel de Clercq is a lover of hybrid work because it brings together her favourite topics: lifelong learning through asynchronous knowledge sharing; productivity through focus and technology; digital language; and enhanced self-consciousness.
In this episode, Isabel, founder of Connect | Share | Lead, trend catcher, fire starter, sparkle architect and respected author, joins Nancy Goebel to share more about her third book, Hybrid Working: A Manifesto. The book is a reflection on how knowledge workers can bring their effectiveness, creativity and wellbeing at work to the next level, lighting the way through seven suggestions.
In this fascinating discussion with Nancy, Isabel shares the inspirations for her work to date and her dreams for the future. She outlines five of the seven key ideas from the book, highlighting those that are most pertinent to digital workplace practitioners.
As the discussion develops, they talk about the importance of using our time wisely through ‘high value activities’ and ‘slow thinking’, and explore why and when colleagues should come together in person.

In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, Nancy Goebel is joined by Paul Miller, CEO and Founder of DWG, thought leader and co-author of the ground-breaking book Nature of Work. We hear from Paul about the recently released second installment of his Decade of Courage Manifesto.
The first Decade of Courage Manifesto, published in 2020, was a brave and bold actions-based document, which acknowledged the major issues that were concerning us pre-pandemic, including climate crisis, injustice, income inequality, and particularly the effects of these on workplaces.
Now, in more reflective mode, the second installment of the Manifesto, subtitled The year of change that matters, explores what’s happening in 2021, post-pandemic, including the huge and unexpectedly rapid shifts occurring in work right now.
There are deep insights into the changes in people’s feelings towards work, the relative efficiencies of in-office and remote working, and how hybrid working can transform lives. The new Manifesto edition poses the questions organizations should be asking related to our human experience of the crisis and the evolving state of work – and offers some solutions to consider.
As well as these reflections, the episode contains many practical recommendations that will enable digital workplace teams to prepare their organizations for change – both today and in the future.

The global pandemic initiated a great swing in the workplace pendulum from traditional office-based, 9–5 work structures to largely remote and hybrid working environments that have changed the workplace forever.
As we emerge now into a world shaped by the pandemic, with return-to-office strategies front of mind, the pendulum is starting to swing back towards traditional, physical workplaces. Finding the right balance of how to support both remote and in-office work spaces and cultures will enable organizations to rest somewhere in the middle of the pendulum and provide more options and flexibility for when, where and how we will work.
In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, Nancy Goebel is joined by executives from Herman Miller, DoorDash and Braze, all living examples of how such workplace pendulum swings have impacted their own organizations, with lessons learned along the way that they are now drawing on as they prepare for future change.
Discussing key challenges and top priorities for hybrid working, this fascinating conversation explores ideas around agile thinking, the need to tolerate ambiguity and how to turn ‘TBD’s’ into tangible action, helping digital workplace practitioners to pave the way for a balanced and thriving employee experience, no matter which way the pendulum swings next.
Guest speakers: Ryan Anderson, VP Global Research and Insights, Herman Miller; Eric Kerr, Program Manager of Workplace Planning, DoorDash; and Susie Youd, Senior Manager of Workplace Experience, Braze.

The saying ‘Change is the only constant’ took on a new resonance during the global pandemic as disruptive change happened with velocity, transforming organizations and their working structures overnight.
COVID-19 has frequently been described as the greatest accelerator for digital transformation, forging alternative ways of working and giving new meaning to how, when and where ‘work’ is done – whether or not organizations and their people were ready for such levels of change. ‘Organizational readiness’ not only explains and provides a framework for how quickly we are able to respond to disruptive change, but also how we move forward to reorganize and regenerate in order to ultimately build back stronger.
In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, Nancy Goebel is joined by Shimrit Janes, Director of Knowledge for DWG, who shares insights into how organizational readiness frameworks have evolved over time, as she takes a fresh look at DWG research on this topic from 2016. She considers what has changed in this space during the global pandemic as well as what we have learned over the course of the year.
Diving into three key areas of ‘readiness’ for digital working – organizational systems, team cultivation and individual capability – this enlightening conversation shares new thinking and practical recommendations for digital workplace teams to enable their organizations to be ready for change today and in the future.

We’ve all been asked at some point what our dream job is, and it comes as no surprise that ‘digital workplace leader’ doesn’t typically hit the number one spot. With no set background or neatly crafted career route, digital workplace leaders tend to forge their own paths into this essential role within organizations today.
In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, Graham Kennedy, Head of Digital Workplace at Fidelity Investments, shares insights into his own career path from starting out as a customer service associate to becoming a digital workplace leader. Graham is recognized as a ‘game changer’ in the industry and, in his first year as Head of Digital Workplace, he was named in two category wins in DWG’s 2020 Awards: Digital Workplace Leader of the Year (Game Changer), Digital Workplace of the Year (Fidelity Investments for Strategic Vision).
Graham dives into what it takes to be a game-changing digital workplace leader, explores how to structure a successful team by fostering a culture of continual learning, and talks about his current focus for the digital workplace around re-entry back into the office to empower dynamic work inside the organization.
The lines around the digital workplace are being redrawn and, with that, the role of digital workplace teams has shifted from plugging in new collaboration technology to a more empathic and holistic approach to the whole employee experience and creating a more connected story.
This episode will leave you with practical guidance for navigating challenges within the digital workplace, tips on how to apply the best of what we’ve learned through the pandemic, and unique ways to prioritize the highest value work to deliver integrated, connected and engaging employee experiences through your digital workplace.

Over the last 18 months, the digital workplace has become the essential workplace. Initially, there was urgency to accelerate technical implementations and roll-outs to support homeworking, but now digital workplace teams can focus on recalibrating strategy, uncovering gaps in governance and supporting colleagues to optimally use the tools at their disposal.
In this episode, Nancy Goebel talks with Elizabeth Marsh, DWG’s Director of Research, and Pete Fields, Digital Employee Experience influencer and advocate, to discuss what’s trending in the post-pandemic workplace.
The mega-trends include digital workplace anthropology, which covers digital fatigue, technostress and how the increasing pace of technological change is impacting people; putting AI into perspective, including the challenge around ethics; and no code & low code solutions, which enable teams to develop what they need themselves.
The trio also share ‘living examples’ of good practice from DWG’s Digital Workplace of the Year Awards winners.

We are in a world where we are working in complex, ambiguous environments – and the last year in particular has seen an explosion of this. Workplace exhaustion, digital fatigue, mental stress, lack of wellbeing are a few key trends emerging as a result.
When we observe nature, we find that it also experiences its own stresses and threats, as well as health. But nature reacts differently to fatigue, exhaustion and stress – and in looking to it for lessons, we can begin to understand a different way to approach these threats within the workplace.
In this episode of Digital Workplace Impact, Nancy Goebel hosts co-authors Paul Miller and Shimrit Janes to introduce their latest book, Nature of Work – The new story of work for a living age, in conversation with Sue Pitkin-Frost.
