In this episode, Mary Debono shares the unexpected benefits of Equine Debono Moves for both horses and humans. Inspired by Mary's studies in the Feldenkrais MethodⓇ, Debono Moves was originally designed to help horses move more freely and reduce tension. But as you'll hear, this gentle hands-on work can be a two-way street of healing and connection.
Mary recounts a recent experience with a Trakehner mare that exemplifies the deep, almost magical connection that can occur during a Debono Moves session. She explains how the practice requires equestrians to be fully present, creating a state of shared awareness with their horses. This mindfulness not only enhances the effectiveness of the method for the horse but also serves as a form of mindfulness meditation and stress relief for the human.
The episode delves into the science behind why this connection feels so good, touching on concepts like neuroplasticity and the power of living in the present moment. Mary illustrates how the skills developed through Debono Moves - presence, attentiveness, and adaptability - translate into other areas of life, improving overall well-being and relationships.
Listeners will learn about the wide applicability of this technique, from young horses to seniors, and how it can address various issues including tension release, improved athletic performance, and recovery from injury. Mary also shares practical tips for listeners to begin incorporating elements of this practice into their daily interactions with their horses.
Whether you're a competitive equestrian looking to improve your horse's performance, a recreational horse enthusiast seeking a deeper bond with your mount, or simply someone interested in innovative approaches to mindfulness and well-being, this episode offers valuable insights and inspiration. Happy listening!

Mary provides practical examples and encourages listeners to experiment with these ideas in their everyday routines.
Whether you're a seasoned equestrian or just beginning your journey, this episode offers valuable tips to help you and your horse move more easily and happily together.

In this episode, Mary Debono continues her discussion on how to work with your horse's existing habits to encourage ease and comfort. Building on concepts from previous episodes, Mary explains the importance of introducing novel, non-habitual movements that engage the horse's nervous system in a positive way.
These movements do more than just improve your horse's athletic abilities—they also enhance their emotional resilience and foster a deeper bond between horse and human.

In this episode, Mary Debono builds on the previous discussion about why it’s crucial to work with, rather than against, a horse’s current movement patterns.
Mary explains how supporting a horse’s tendency for spinal extension, for instance, can be the first step in helping the horse discover healthier movement options, like flexion and rounding.
By exaggerating and then gently guiding the horse back to a more neutral position, the nervous system starts to feel safe and open to new possibilities. This method not only benefits the horse’s physical health but also fosters a stronger, more trusting bond between horse and rider.
Mary also touches on how important it is to involve the entire spine, rib cage, and sternum in these movements, emphasizing that healthy movement isn’t just about the back but the whole horse, including the horse's mind.
This episode serves as a valuable guide for equestrians looking to improve their horse’s movement and deepen their connection through gradual, supportive methods.

In this episode of "Easier Movement, Happier Horses," Mary Debono delves into the often-overlooked concept of working WITH a horse's current movement patterns, however "incorrect" we may think they are, instead of trying to force a change.
Mary explains how many equestrians, in their desire to help their horses move better, may inadvertently cause discomfort or resistance by attempting to immediately correct posture issues, such as a dropped back.
Drawing on her extensive experience, Mary illustrates how gently supporting a horse's existing habits can create a sense of ease and safety, making the nervous system more receptive to learning new, healthier movement options. This approach not only improves the horse's physical well-being but also enhances its mental and emotional state.
Mary offers a fresh perspective on fostering a deeper connection with your horse by respecting its current state and guiding it toward better movement through gradual, supportive methods.

Can the way you think about your body transform your riding experience? Join me, Mary Debono, on the Easier Movement, Happier Horses podcast as we explore a crucial concept for equestrians: understanding the difference between using body parts in isolation versus independently. This might sound like a subtle shift, but it can lead to a profound improvement in your movement coordination and your harmony with your horse. By gaining better control and awareness of how you move both in and out of the saddle, you can elevate your nonverbal communication with your horse, resulting in a more enjoyable and effective riding journey.
Throughout this episode, I’ll guide you through breaking free from maladaptive movement habits that limit your potential and cause unnecessary fatigue or injury. We'll discuss the importance of learning to use your body parts independently, fostering healthier and more harmonious movements that benefit your overall well-being. Tune in for practical advice and valuable insights aimed at helping you cultivate greater body awareness, enhance your athleticism, and build a more pleasurable and productive connection with your horse. Make mindful adjustments, transform your riding, and discover the joy of moving in harmony with your equine partner.

Did you know that your horse’s sternum plays a key role in helping your horse round the back easily?
The sternum and ribs are often overlooked, yet they play a key role in ensuring horses have freer, healthier and more comfortable movement.
In this episode, Mary Debono discusses the role of the rib cage in reducing stress and wear and tear on the horse’s back, neck and limbs.
When horses are reminded how their rib cage can participate and support their movement, it can lead to freer, healthier backs, necks and legs. And more elegant, harmonious movement.
And the same is true for you too!

Wish your hips were more flexible or comfortable? Learn why the Feldenkrais MethodⓇ is different from stretching and strengthening programs. To improve your hips, explore this holistic, whole-body approach to movement, so you AND your horse can experience more comfort, elegance, athleticism and harmony.
Key Takeaways from the Podcast Episode:
1. Hips are a Common Issue: Many people, across different ages and riding disciplines, struggle with tight, stiff, or uncomfortable hips. This is often a significant obstacle in riding comfortably and effectively.
2. The Feldenkrais MethodⓇ: Mary Debono discusses her personal experience with severe hip problems and how she found relief through the Feldenkrais Method. This method focuses on holistic approaches to movement and can offer relief from hip pain and stiffness.
3. Unique Approach to Hip Improvement: Unlike other methods that may focus solely on stretching or strengthening the hip muscles, the Feldenkrais Method takes into account individual history, injuries, and unique structural differences. It aims to help individuals organize their movements more efficiently to relieve stress around the hips.
4. Connection Between Human and Horse: Debono emphasizes the importance of integrating movement improvement for both humans and horses. Techniques like the Ischium Wave not only benefit the human but also help horses by transmitting ease and relaxation through their musculature.
5. Whole Body Functional Approach: Instead of isolated exercises, the Feldenkrais Method encourages a holistic understanding of movement, emphasizing efficient coordination throughout the entire body. This approach fosters regenerative movement patterns, reducing wear and tear on joints and muscles.
6. Biological Optimism: The method instills hope by encouraging curiosity about aches and pains, exploring ways to reduce effort and heal, and promoting coordinated movement to prevent compensation after injuries heal.
7. Benefits of Joining the Move With Your Horse group: Debono invites listeners to join her program (opening our doors soon!), which offers live coaching, professionally pre-recorded videos, other supporting materials (pdfs, etc.), and a unique blend of human and horse movement improvement techniques.
8. Encouragement to Explore Holistic Approaches: Listeners are encouraged to explore holistic, global approaches to addressing their own or their horse's movement issues, with the understanding that both human and horse deserve to feel great together.

Would you like to be more supple, balanced and strong? Would you like to improve your horse's movement too? In this episode, we'll discuss why simply repeating movements won't help, and can actually make things worse!
Our bodies were made to move, but so often both we and our horses get stuck in less-than-ideal movement patterns. Mindless repetition of a movement won't fix the problem, it can exacerbate it. To improve a movement, you must focus on the quality of the movement, not the quantity.
To do that, you must pay attention to how you initiate movement. This mindful method can dramatically improve your movement and your horse's movement. It's key to improving balance, flexibility, and power, and can help make you and your horse a more harmonious and elegant team.

Let's talk about how you can effortlessly improve your movement. And your horse's performance.
Many of us force ourselves into a straighter posture and endure uncomfortable stretches in an attempt to improve our position and flexibility. And we use that same mindset with our horses. We use our seat, legs, hands and voice to "get" a horse to bend through a corner, pick up the right lead or round their back and engage their hind legs. We're constantly correcting ourselves and our horses!
And while this approach is common, it's not effective. Nor kind.
In this episode, I offer you a kinder, more mindful alternative. This connecting approach not only feels better, it's also effective, it enhances body awareness AND it can elevate your relationship with your horse.

Whether you want to improve your horse's athletic performance, confidence or comfort, there's a KEY step that needs to happen. And I'll tell you all about it in this episode.
This key step has benefits for you too. It refines your communication, enhances your feel and helps you connect more deeply with your horse.
What's really cool is that when you help your horse improve their movement, it opens improvement in other areas as well. Your horse can begin to experience greater ease and comfort in other activities, such as being groomed, tacked up, ridden, etc. In other words, they can feel better about these experiences too!
All of this equine improvement takes involvement on your part, of course. And in this episode, I describe how I help horses feel better. And how you can too.

If your horse expresses displeasure when being groomed, tacked up or blanketed, how do you respond? Do you correct your horse with a verbal "Hey, knock it off!"? Or do you administer a slap?
Or do you reassess what you're doing and (gasp!) actually LISTEN to your horse?
This episode explores common situations that equestrians encounter with their horses. Horses that wave a hind leg, pin their ears, gnash their teeth or bite when being blanketed, groomed or tacked up.
We explore various ways you can respond to these scenarios. You'll learn how responding with physical corrections or even threats can shut down communication and damage your relationship with your horse. Plus, it doesn't feel good to either of you!
You'll learn safe, intelligent and KIND responses that can leave both you and your horse feeling good. You'll hear how choosing to respond with kindness and cooperation refines your communication and builds trust in each other.
After all, you love your horse. Your horse is your partner, your friend. Let your actions - and your relationship - reflect that.

Not to mention discomfort and confusion for your horse!
And that’s because the way you dress is influenced by your movement habits. And your movement habits can determine how balanced–or how unbalanced–you are in the saddle.
And it’s not just restricted to how you put on your shirt. How you put on your pants, shoes and socks also matter. Along with other activities such as how you grip your steering wheel, wear your watch and hold your phone.
And even the habitual way you tack up your horse.
We have very strong habits around those things we do on a regular basis. And that can be a good thing! But many habits are formed because we’ve developed movement restrictions that leave us with little choice in doing activities, such as dressing, in a different way.
After listening to this episode, you’ll be able to use everyday activities to positively influence your horse’s well-being. And your own.

Want to get rid of a common cause of stiffness, soreness and fatigue? In this episode, you’ll learn a NEW way to use relaxation to improve suppleness, generate more power and enhance well-being. And this works for you and your horse!
It's likely that you and your horse have excessive tension in certain muscles. You’re overworking some parts and underusing others. It’s an incredibly common problem!
It’s something that humans and horses do unconsciously, out of habit. What may have started as a healthy response to an injury or some other stressor, has become a maladaptive habit.
This unnecessary muscular work is a common cause of stiffness, soreness, fatigue, weakness and damage to joints and muscles.
In today’s episode, we’ll explore a new way of looking at relaxation(it’s not what you think!)and its importance in being able to use your muscles powerfully and effectively. You’ll know how to apply these concepts to both you and your horse!

What do you do when your horse feels stiff, resistant, or “lazy?” Do you use stronger leg or rein aids? Maybe add a touch of spur or a tap with the whip? In other words, do you simply make your request LOUDER?
If you do, I’d like to offer you another option. One that will work a whole lot better. And FEEL a lot better to you and your horse too.
In this new approach, you'll turn the focus off your horse and onto YOU. Many excellent riders do this intuitively. Instead of pushing and pulling your horse, you'll create the movement in yourself and invite your horse into the experience.
In this episode, I’ll share how you can get started with this approach. Don’t miss it. It can be a game-changer for you and your horse!

What do you feel when you touch your horse?
Maybe you notice that your horse is itchy. Or that a certain spot is tight or sore.
These observations, while important, only tell a very small part of your horse’s story.
Would you like to learn a lot more about your horse? Like why she moves and behaves the way she does?
I’ll give you a simple, powerful exercise you can do to improve this ability to feel your horse on a deeper level.
When you educate your touch, your hands will naturally pick up more information about your horse. You may even start to sense WHY your horse is stiff, resistant, or sore
And very importantly, your improved attention to detail will deepen your connection with your horse.

You make decisions all day long. From what to wear, what to eat, what to think, what to do with your horse, those are all decisions. Most of your decisions are unconscious. They happen automatically, without thought.
Each decision you make helps shape your life.
If you’re like most people, you’re making decisions based only on remembered experiences and images. You’re not using your imagination to create something entirely NEW.
You’re simply reliving old experiences, packaged with a new date. That’s stale. And boring.
In this episode, I share a simple, powerful strategy that can jumpstart your creativity and help you design a more joyful, satisfying life at any age.
And if you don’t think you’re a “creative person,” be prepared to become one!
Let’s get started, shall we?

Are you doing stretches with your horse? Do you stretch yourself to stay limber?
While it's a common practice, stretching may NOT be helping you, after all.
In fact, studies have shown that stretching can actually weaken muscles. It can also exacerbate harmful movement habits, making you (or your horse) MORE likely to stiffen up.
In this podcast episode, I explain why stretching can be counterproductive. And what you can do instead. I hope you give it a listen!

If you're like most people, there's a thing or two you'd like to improve. Maybe it's your posture or maybe it's the way your horse uses her back.
Whatever you'd like to improve, it's tempting and common to just try to CORRECT the situation. If you're slouching, well, then just straighten up!
If your horse's back is tight and dropped, do what it takes to get your horse to lift her back. Simple as that!
Or is it?
When we correct movement or behavior, we're contradicting what the nervous system is doing. That doesn't promote safety or trust. That means that the change is not only unsustainable, but can create additional problems.
In this episode of Easier Movement, Happier Horses, I explain why it's soooo much more effective to CONNECT, rather than correct. You can improve posture, you can improve the way your horse uses her back or any other habit you'd like to change. Give it a listen and try it out!
I have FREE resources to get you started CONNECTING and helping your horse improve. Go to https://www.MaryDebono.com/Horse.
You'll get access to a hub of videos to teach you basic hands-on "moves" to help improve your horse, as well as Feldenkrais-inspired awareness exercises to improve your comfort, flexibility and balance too.

You want to improve your balance, flexibility and confidence, right? And you want your horse to be supple, sound and relaxed too. But you're already pressed for time! How can you pack more into your day?

Is your horse stiff to one side? Does your horse hollow her back or stand asymmetrically? Does he pin his ears when he tighten the girth?
In this episode, you'll learn how to identify and help change your horse's unhealthy habits of posture, movement and behavior.
You'll learn a gentle, effective way to enhance your horse's body awareness and help your horse release unhealthy habits of tensing muscles. This hands-on technique can also improve your "feel" and improve communication and connection between you and your horse.
