Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best?
After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks!
A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars:
A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk.
As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines!

Mount Mary is listed amongst the elite of Australian wine such as Penfolds 'Grange' and Henschke 'Hill of Grace' so why does it cost $165 and the others start at $900? We asked Chief Winemaker Sam Middleton
"I wonder what would have happened if we followed their price structure"
After visiting his local wine shop Angus O'Loughlin asked Sam what his thought were when he sees Mount Mary wines marked up 100% BEFORE corkage
"We treat our mailing list like family, what people do out of that is their decision and their choice"
This episode we are lucky to have a vertical of 'Quintet' the "flagship" of the Mount Mary wines with stories being shared about each vintage and the personal and professional reason why Sam brought them into the studio:

We've all heard about following in your father's footsteps but for Sam Middleton of Mount Mary Vineyard we wanted to know if expectation meant invitation
"There was probably never any doubt that I would end up doing what I'm doing now, wine was always a big part of my life"
Taking our conversation on the Journey through working at Gevrey-Chambertin and cutting his teeth at Coldstream Hills and Dominique Portet before returning to his families estate as Chief Winemaker
"Once you're back you're very unlikely to leave, you wanna try and get as many different experiences as possible"
Imposter Syndrome, stamping his mark on the label and the next generation of winemakers are all discussed while everyone enjoys a stunning
2015 Mount Mary Triolet. "It was a fantastic Yarra vintage, probably one of the best I've been involved in"
2021 Mount Mary Chardonnay "Great acid, great focus, great freshness, great drive but still have flavour and concentration and personality"

Have a cracking bottle of Red Wine and you don't know if you should decant it?
If you should - how long for?
Master Sommelier Carlos Santos is here to debunk the decanting myths and describe the many benefits, including separating the sediment from the liquid. This is especially helpful for red wines. Decanting also enhances a wine's flavour by exposing it to oxygen, and allowing it to breathe.
In this episode of Got Somme: We decant one wine into 3 different vessels to explain the process and why once decanted we can assess 3 different experiences.
Get ready to find out how to be rid of your wine dregs aka sediment and give your cherished wines their best chance.

Embarking his 20th vintage in Yarra Valley Toolangi winemaker Kaspar Hermann knows a thing or two about getting the best from a Chardonnay grape.
Marrying into a wine making family, and taking a viticulture course himself in his teens, wine is where he was destined to be and after vintages with Seville Estate, Rochford and Mount Mary, Toolangi came calling. Taking over the reigns from legendary winemakers Rick Kinzbrunner, Franco D'Anna, David Bicknell and Willy Lunn his first vintage in 2019 was made somewhat easier by starting during the harvest and the pressure of making calls about the canopy and crop being delayed until 2020.
In this episode of Got Somme: Master Sommelier Carlos Santos and wine lover Angus O'Loughlin talk about the Toolangi Takeover, the importance of 'F Block Chardonnay' and the world stage Kaspar dreams to take his wines.

Chardonnay can be a divisive wine when really it shouldn't! If you don't like Chardonnay chances are you probably just don't like over oaked Chardonnay.
The grape variety itself is actually neutral and if you were to taste a Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay next to a William Fevre Petit Chablis you would be mistaken for thinking they are two completely different grape varietals.
The difference? Oak
One with plenty and one without any!
In this episode of Got Somme, Yarra Valley local Brenden Robnik aka 'The Wine Animal' joins us in studio to deep dive his favourite Australian wine region while also looking at the complex differences altitude can make on Chardonnay separated only by a few kilometres.
Disagree that the Yarra Valley is the best wine region in Victoria?

Late last year Got Somme host Angus O'Loughlin was asked via our Instagram
"What bottle would you cellar for ten years"
He held up a 2021 Demi Shiraz that he was drinking in that moment.
That led to a phone call to Syrahmi owner Adam Foster who was inspecting the vines and they confirmed his studio attendance as first winemaker on the podcast in 2024!
Bottles brought into studio:
2022 Demi Shiraz
2017 Lala
2018 LaLa
2022 Syrahmi 'Angus'
2004 Syrahmi (first ever vintage)
A bit of Syrahmi: The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born. Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage.

The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!"
The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours.
Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed.

Imagine being gifted a wine and not realising it's value - they make less than 300 bottles each year!
Hiding in Angus' cellar at home was this bottle of wine and YOU could win it. After discovering the gem in his collection while speaking with Yarra Yering winemaker Sarah Crowe the boys decide to deep dive the world of 'Carrodus' Wines bringing this Masterclass on a true Yarra Yering icon.
This wine isn't made any year. It's created out of a small, historic parcel of vines on the Yarra Yering site. It's only made in exceptional conditions and only when the grapes aren't required for the No1 or No2 wines.
Also listen out for the vintage Sarah describes as "The Goat" and then keep your eyes out for it on auction, bottle shops or wine lists.

In 2018 fire destroyed the restaurant and cellar door, containing $500,000 worth of wine, of famed Australian winery '10 Minutes by Tractor'.
Today owner Martin Spedding sits down with Master Sommelier and Got Somme Host Carlos Santos and co-host Angus O'Loughlin to talk about the tragic day and how they emerged from the ashes to win 'Wine List of the Year' and named as one of Victorias best restaurants.
Make sure you stick around to the end to find out why Martin fought the insurance company to hold onto a $40,000 bottle of 2000 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Conti Grand Cru and what his plans are with the famed or should we say "flamed" bottle.

Ten Minutes by Tractor is a winery on the Mornington Peninsula. It is the convergence of wine journeys that began almost 40 years ago with a group of individuals and vineyards that fortuitously came together over time to create the winery that exists today.

$120 down the drain!
"Corked" wine does not mean a wine with small pieces of cork floating around in the glass. It is a word for a wine that has become contaminated with cork taint. In the worst instances, the wine tastes of nothing but mould – which should be obvious.
BUT what if it isn't?
How do you identify when a bottle of wine has gone bad?
We are here to educate and alleviate that fear as we accidently experience first hand what a corked wine smells and tastes like, demonstrate how it can be easy to distinguish between a regular bottle and the steps you can take when asking for a refund.
NEVER in over 60 Episodes has this happened OR SHOULD IT!

Tasting something brand new and as the name suggest an "accident" to a 10 year old Pinot from their revered 'Kaye' vines it was an amazing showcase of this wonderful Victorian winery.

Kicking off our new format of interviewing the people responsible for a Master Sommeliers favourite wines. First up it's Michael Dhillon from 'Bindi' Wines.
In this episode we discuss:
About Bindi:
‘Bindi’, 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is the family property of the Dhillon family. Their vineyard and winemaking philosophy is to seek balance and purity in the expression of our various individual vineyard sites and this philosophy is applied to farming and conservation at ‘Bindi’; the preservation of the natural harmony.

"Holy S***"
Surprising a Master Sommelier with his FAVOURITE wine! 4 different vintages 🤯🍷
Master Sommelier Carlos Santos has been talking about Wendouree Winery in Clare Valley, South Australia on nearly every episode of Got Somme to date. So when we got the chance to surprise him with a flight of 4 different vintages and varietals from the brand he said "NO F***ING WAY".
The Wendouree vineyards were established in 1893, and its distinctive, high-quality wines are known to have an indefinite shelf life despite their little production. They have grown to be somewhat of an Australian cult favourite among savvy wine drinkers. The only way to get them when they go on sale is via the mailing list, which is still one of the most difficult to join in Australia.

We recorded this episode towards the end of last year but felt it didn't match the seriousness of the podcast trying to find the best value bottle of wine under $30.
To celebrate upcoming Season 2 of the podcast we thought we would share this as a bonus because Carlos' reaction was so good to finding out the trick we had played on him 🤣
If you thought the podcast was funny make sure you check it out on YouTube here to see the reaction of a Master Sommelier drinking wine from a bladder.

Carlos also rates this as one of Australia's finest producers making exceptional, consistent wine and our tasting doesn't disappoint.

Our FINAL $30 or under bottle of wine has been hand selected by Master Sommelier Carlos Santos.
Why this bottle?
Carlos wanted to find a similar bottle that could knock the Chateau Haut Madrac, our current #1, off the top of the podium.
They're both traditional Bordeaux blends and both influenced by coastal climates. Carlos knowing the Vasse Felix winemaker thought it could topple our old world classic but can it shake up the competition before next weeks 'finale'?

We put two Bordeaux Chateau wines up against each other battling out for the BEST BOTTLE UNDER $30
We firstly assess our current #1 wine under $30 the 2017 Chateau Haut Madrac against the just released 2018 vintage and the results surprised us!
Then we take the challenge to a bottle that on paper reads a similar story:
BUT It becomes a very VERY different story once the bottles are poured into the glass!

Usually we match wine with food but in this episode of Got Somme we match the location of where this is best enjoyed, if you don't have a bedtime or young children that is!
A classic dry white from near the mouth of the Loire river on the Atlantic coast of France. The grapes are gently pressed and the young wine is allowed to sit on lees for 6 months to bring out that wonderful briney note fans of Muscadet so love.

"I am a FIEND for this wine"
Ex-Radio Announcer Angus O'Loughlin insisted that this sweet wine be included in this season of Got Somme after tasting it during his WSET level 2 course. This wine, which Carlos had heard of before EVER visiting Australia, is the literal gold standard for dessert wines and the ideal half bottle to present to our palates. It is best suited and suggested to assess together with some cheese and crackers.

"Grenache (by itself) is not something I really, really enjoy but then again if done right can be very, VERY good" - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos
A thin skinned grape variety that usually thrives in colder climates we are excited to see if this Spinifex Barossa Grenache can surprise us by going against the climate 'norms' and producing a balanced, fragrant, high alcohol wine that makes our Top 3 lists.
What do you prefer: Grenache by itself or blended with other grapes like in a GSM?

"Interesting to get a Sancerre labelled 'Sauvignon Blanc' - they are so driven to sell their wine to the export market because back home everyone knows Sancerre is Sauvignon Blanc." - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos
Comparing this bottle to Ep7 the NZ Sav Blanc there is a remarkable difference on the nose and palate showing the influence of climate and winemaking styles as they are using the same grapes.
We find this bottle to be much more finessed, delicate and smooth in comparison and suggest drinking along with this episode to learn about it's tasting notes and then showing off your new knowledge with friends this weekend.

Have you ever tried South African wine? Why would you want to when a Master Sommelier describes the nose and palate as "fresh road" WELL HOLD THAT THOUGHT! This wine is unique and interesting showing a different wine style that Angus had never tried before all while staying under our $30 budget. We apologise!
This podcast is on a mission to find the best quality bottle of wine UNDER $30 and this week we splurged and spent $35.99 at the time of recording. Why? Master Sommelier Carlos Santos was interested in trying this bottle because it was made by John Duval, one of only four Penfolds chief winemakers, who was also in charge of developing Australia's most well-known export, "Grange."
We genuinely hope you don't mind reaching a little further into your pockets this week as we learn about "SGM." Stay tuned for an interesting explanation of why this isn't labeled "GSM."

"Nebbiolo is the grape with the MOST character and personality" - Carlos
When someone say "Acid" I think about white coats and the Joker from Batman falling into a vat of it. Acid however is one of the core characteristics in all wines not just White! Master Sommelier Carlos Santos has waited over 20 episodes to finally showcase a red wine variety that showcases high acidity and Nebbiolo, alongside Sangiovese and Barolo, is one of them.
This wine from the moment it hits the palate sends the mouth into overdrive as we learn about how winemakers create high acid wine, why they do it and how it shouldn't be feared.

"There's nothing like this that I have ever tried before" - Carlos Santo MS
Master Sommelier Carlos gets thrown under the bus with this blind tasting as Angus purchases a novelty bottle of 'Hemp Flavoured' wine that is described as "Cordial" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in colour and appearance.
This might be the first episode we recommend you don't taste alongside us and enjoy the reactions of Carlos seeing the wine in the glass for the first time and tasting it 😂🤮

The internet describes Syrah as:
Syrah (/ˈsiːrɑː/), also known as Shiraz, is a dark-skinned grape variety grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine.
BUT there is a difference between the two!
Find out how a Master Sommelier assess them for differences in this episode of Got Somme as Carlos helps describe the fundamental characteristics of the "Old World" style Shiraz.

"There is one fruit character that comes off the glass straight away and is not the usual citrus fruit that we normally pick on white wine." - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos
We designed this podcast around the idea that you would drink the same wine alongside us each week and at the 5min mark of this episode there's a great moment to play along with us as you guess the fruit most obvious on the nose of this glass.
Welcome to the big body world of a Viognier as we finally see what Carlos has been talking about in previous episodes "fatty and coats the mouth".

Master Sommelier Carlos walks us through how to evaluate Tempranillo, from what to expect when pouring into the glass to classic smell characteristics and palate clues as to the wine style. We will also talk about the difference between Australia's take on Tempranillo and the classic varieties from Rioja.
This bottle makes either Carlos or wine enthusiast and host Angus O'Loughlin change their Top 3 selections from our tastings so far but who will it be?

"We did try in our first episode the Jim Barry 'Watervale' Riesling, but that was so much drier and warmer in alcohol, this is for me what Riesling is mostly about. My favourite country for white wines is Germany" - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos
MIND = BLOWN
A great introduction to German white wine for Angus in this bottle that cost less than $30!

In a surprise to Master Sommelier Carlos Santos he was presented with a line up of three wines with only one being an Argentinian example of Malbec. Can he pick it from the appearance alone? What subtle differences does he pick up on the nose and why does he change his mind after trying on the palate?

"What I love about this podcast is you're introducing us to bottles of wine we would never have the confidence to pick" - Angus O'Loughlin
Originally thought to be Riesling this grape varietal is semi aromatic on the nose and more shy on the palate. Presenting us with oranges, apples and tropical tones it's a bottle that might become a favourite and certainly a talking point around the table.

"I would say for Pinot Noir it has a deep intensity! Compared to tasting a Shiraz then no, it's pale, but we are trying a Pinot Noir which is quite deep even in colour" - Carlos Santos MS
The first time our podcast has circled back to the same wine varietal - Pinot Noir. A very different style to what we have previously tasted hence why we picked this bottle.
Deep red fruit, no freshness, overripe and a jammy nose but with a different effect on the palate.
Enjoy the glass, bottle and episode
Cheers 🍇
