In a world as vast as the kaiju genre, there needs to be a podcast that can tackle all things giant monster – from film to fandom, television to toys, Godzilla to Gamera. That podcast is YHS on Monster Island!
From the world of Yes Have Some comes a new show dedicated to the spectacle and madness of the kaiju genre; one as fun as a trip to World Children’s Land and as informative as a Dr. Yamane lecture. Piloting this ship will be ”The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” and YHS co-founder, Jacob Walsh, and the ”Mayor of Toku Toy Town” and acclaimed sci-fi author, Jay Key.
The podcast On Monster Island – Godzilla, Kaiju, & Tokusatsu! is created by YHS Media Network. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Jake and Jay roadtripped it to Las Vegas for DesignerCon 2024 - and it was an epic trek! Our two daikaiju devotees share their favorite parts of the experience as well as an impressive roster of pickups from Marusan, Marmit, Bullmark, Mondo, Draculazer, Ressinblood, Sad Salesman, Creature Bazaar, and more!
Jake and Jay recap an eventful GODZILLA DAY 2024 that gave us huge news, amazing toy releases, another impressive short film (can you say "G-Claw"?), and much more! But it's not just Godzilla Day, as we saw more exclusives from Hobby Round 31, Hakaba Gallery, and the Tsuburaya Store.
Plus, we have pickups!
Have fun on Monster Island!
Jake returns! On top of that, we're big-time overachievers getting this episode out a few days early! Don't you love us? Okay, don't answer that!
This episode covers Jake's visit to New York Comic-Con and all of the kaiju sightings in the Big Apple; but that's not all...our hosts chat about a bevy of new releases from X-Plus/Star Ace, Marusan, Max Toy Japan, Bandai, and more. But...again...that's not all! One of the best moments of any year is Godzilla Day - and doubly so since Toho has been releasing shorts every year, both CGI/animated and suitmation. The trailer for the "person in suit" short - a continuation of last year's Godzilla vs. Jet Jaguar - was released...and wow, does it look good!
And, of course, we have a few toy pickups!
With Jake traveling to New York Comic-Con, toy designer and artist, Chas Foreman (Chazbro Toys, Kaiju Go!) joins Jay to not just talk kaiju and Godzilla toy pick-ups and recent tokusatsu viewing - but to engage in two awesome new segments: Questions by Chas and the first-ever game of Collect...Customize...or Cash Out!
You crazy kaiju kids and henshin heroes and heroines, it's time for another YHS on Monster Island - and this was is jam-packed with toys, news, and bouncy surf beats! Jay is joined by "Everyone's Favorite Kaiju Collector" Ryan Wilhelm (Collect All Monsters) and toy designer / artist Chas Foreman (Chazbro Toys, Kaiju Go!) to review the 1967 kaiju flick, Gappa: The Triphibian Monster, discuss a bevy of kaiju toy and sofubi releases from Marusan, X-Plus, M1, and more, go over the big reveals from Super Festival 89 in Japan, and lastly - but most importantly - unveil some exciting developments with Chazbro Toy's latest release, StarMonkeyGo!
It's a fun one - so enjoy your time on the island!
Hey there, listener...question...how come no one talks about Neo Ultra Q? We need to fix that.
Jake and Jay breakdown the 12-episode sequel to the groundbreaking Ultra Q (1966) - released 47 years later after the original - but capturing the vibe better than it had any right to; but what did our hosts think?
Also, it may be after the convention season but that's not stopping sofubi powerhouses like Marusan, Bullmark, and USToys from releasing amazing items!
Enjoy another episode of YHS on Monster Island!
Jake and Jay sit down to review what kaiju toy companies are trending up vs. down in 2024 - and what are some of the biggest toy trends. Be it Mondo or Max Toy, Marusan or Sarujirushi, the duo of daikaiju devotees have it covered in this episode! Also, a huge week of pickups...and they answer the question: what ever happened to the 2023 Kaiju Toy of the Year Award?
Jake and Jay survived Kaiju Go! 2024! And they came out of it with tons of new toys from amazing artists like Mark and Max Nagata, Ressinblood, Michael Morse - and big name sofubi players like Marusan, Marmit, and M1. The duo recap the weekend's festivities which included a trip to the sofubi/kaiju/horror hot spot, Leviathan Collectibles, and the flagship store for Half Price Books.
Tons of toys. Tons of kaiju. Tons of fun.
Let's Kaiju Go already!
Its a few days away from Kaiju Go! 2024...Jake is on an airplane heading to Dallas...Ryan Wilhelm is out sick...so what does Jay do? He just stares at a camera and talks about his recent pickups for 30 minutes. Is it riveting? No, not really. But it exists anyways.
Jake and Jay compare all of the toy releases and reveals from the two super shows over the last few weeks - San Diego Comic-Con and Wonder Festival - Summer.
Also, do we have two "Top 10" pick-ups this week? I think we do!
It's a wrap on another G-Fest - and this one was the biggest yet! Listen to Jay and Ryan chat about their experience - their second year of working the dealers room as Toku Toy Town - and review all of the great pick-ups from sellers like M1, U.S. Toys, Marusan, Tolzar Toy Co., Chibi Goji Toys, Last Bastion Studios, and more!
Netflix's Ultraman: Rising (2024) - a partnership between the studio and Tsuburaya Productions, with animation from ILM - is making some waves with its heart-first approach, and excellent animation as it tries to finally get Ultraman to be a viable property with the American audience. But - as YHS on Monster Island host, Jacob Walsh, asks: is it even Ultraman?
Our two hosts debate the merits of the film through the lens of a tokusatsu-loving adult, a child, and a Tsuburaya/Netflix decision-maker; and its a rare opportunity to see the duo of daikaiju devotees, Jacob and Jay, disagree on a movie.
Other than Ultraman: Rising, the team briefly speaks about two other films the recently watched - The Great Buddha Arrival (2018) and The Primevals (2023).
Oh yeah, there's also lots of toy pick-ups - including a Top 10 Wishlist get from Jay and the world's smallest Godzilla collectible (not really...but maybe).
Enjoy!
This is the second half of Jay's "Pair o' Parodies" and we finish it off with Nikkatsu's 2010 film, DEATH KAPPA! The Tomoo Haraguchi brain child is unique - even for low-budget kaiju parody films - but does it deliver? Bigger question: why aren't there any Hangylos toys?
But Jake and Jay do more than talk about Death Kappa...they have a YHS on Monster Island exclusive toy reveal for Max Toy's Kaiju Go! event exclusive release! You don't want to miss this!
And that's not all, folks! We get kaiju news (the MonsterVerse has a new director, right?), toy pick-ups, and 10 things you need to know about kappa!
Enjoy your visit to YHS on Monster Island!
In this very special episode - Part I of a Pair o' Parodies - Jay is joined by "Everyone's Favorite Kaiju Collector" Ryan Wilhelm to discuss many things - but most of all the merits of the Minoru Kawasaki film, MONSTER SEAFOOD WARS (2020) and if Jumbo Cook is the greatest thing...in...ever. In ever.
But the duo also talk about big events in the kaiju community that are fast approaching - like G-Fest, Kaiju Go!, and the release of Ultraman: Rising on Netflix. Ryan and Jay discuss what it's like to vend at G-Fest, what they're looking forward to this year, the excitement level for Kaiju Go! and what it means to the the indie/designer vinyl toy scene in Dallas-Fort Worth, and initial anticipation levels for Ultraman: Rising.
And, of course, there's going to be toy pick ups! Ryan has a litanry of treasures including a new favorite and an all-time signature piece!
Next week - in Part 2 of the Pair o' Parodies double shot, Jake returns to chat DEATH KAPPA with Jay!
Wait, were we wrong about the Godzilla anime trilogy?

In addition, Jake and Jay preview Hobby Round 30 and discuss a litany of recent toy drops and upcoming pre-orders from Medicom Toy, Anraku Ansaku, Marmit, Bandai, M1, and many more!
It's sofubi time on YHS on Monster Island!
You heard it right, folks. Our beloved "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh is the first person to take the YHS on Monster Island "Kaiju Personality" Quiz. Will this new test deliver palatable results...or is this just a waste of time? Tune in to find out!
Also, our hosts chat Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Season 2 renewal, the GXK box office success, and a few recent toy releases making waves within the fandom!
#godzillaxkongthenewempire #godzilla #monsterverse Can something heading towards half a billion in global revenue be bad for the franchise? Are long-time Godzilla fans being too harsh on the MonsterVerse? And where can the MonsterVerse go from here? All of these questions and more are answered by our two hosts as they review GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (2024). Also, Jay introduces a new segment: What I Think Jake Would Buy at the Thai Toy Expo; it's sofubi and vinyl designer toy madness like you've never seen!
We are mere hours away from GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE hitting theaters across the nation and Jake and Jay share their thoughts, hopes, and predictions on the latest installment of the MonsterVerse madness!
Also, the duo discuss a ton of news items, including a lot of toy reveals and exclusives from Mondo, Medicom Toy x Anraku Ansaku, Marusan, Seismic Toys, and more!
And when it comes to pickups, this is a week you don't want to miss! Jake gets another item off his Top 10 list...and Jay brings home a wacky assortment of toys, ranging from pachi blow molds to Sunguts Factory to a vintage beach ball.
Oh yeah, and something to do with the number 89...
From the premier kaiju and tokusatsu podcast/YouTube show, YHS ON MONSTER ISLAND, comes this definitive ranking of the TOP 10 MOST UNDERRATED PERFORMANCES IN THE GODZILLA FRANCHISE. All kaiju fans know Dr. Serizawa and Miss Namakawa and Lt. Akane Yashiro - but what about those characters, unheralded by the masses, that bring substance and texture to these monster-filled narratives? This list takes a look at some of the most under-appreciated acting jobs from the Showa, Heisei, and Millennium eras - and remember, this ranking is to start the debate, not end it! Enjoy!
Ninjas. Wizards. Giant Frogs. Yes, 1966's The Magic Serpent from Toei has them all - and a lot more! This film is said to have inspired George Lucas' Star Wars - and you actually can see why - but at the end up the day, it's just bonkers.
Aside from this fun romp of a film, Jake and Jay have a litany of fun pick-ups, including items from Bandai, Yamakichi, Marmit, Max Toy, and more! Oh yeah, Jay also gets a "collection-defining" item...tune in to see!
Jake and Jay take a look at the amazing kaiju toy releases from Wonder Festival 2024 Winter edition, including new releases from X-Plus, M1, Sunguts Factory, Max Toy Company, PassionTank, One Up, Spiral Studio, and many more!
On top of this, it's been a great week of pickups as Jay knocked two off his Top 10 Wishlist and Jake grabbed one of his new favorite toys!
In one of the most fun episodes to date, Jake and Jay share their top 10 Godzilla scenes of all-time...did yours make the cut?
Kurt Russell, Apple, and Godzilla are an unlikely trio - but can they work together to produce a compelling MonsterVerse entry? Jake and Jay go through their overall thoughts on the series - was it necessary? Did the kaiju deliver? Would they watch a second season?
In addition, the big news in G-dom is that Godzilla is up for an Oscar!!! It only took 70 years - but Toho's money-making monster has a chance to bring home the gold (and totally should!). But, was he snubbed for other major awards?
Jake has a few pickup and the duo go over some funky new releases and news from Anraku Ansaku, Titan Publishing, and Titanic Creations.
**apologies for some audio issues**
Happy 2024! Jake and Jay are back reviewing Daiei's 1962 film, THE WHALE GOD, which was brought to North America for the first time (this year, by the way!) by SRS Cinema. We all know that the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" is an expert on "killer animal" films - but where does this Kojiro Hongo and Takashi Shimura-led entry land on his spectrum: is it more Jaws? Or more Orca?
Also, M1, Marusan, and U.S.Toys were active at Super Festival 87 in Japan - what gems did they unveil to the sofubi-crazed collecting community?
And did Jake already knock off something from his Top 10 Wishlist? And did Jay have his best single pick-up of the 2023 right before the holidays?
Enjoy this episode of YHS on Monster Island!

Does it deliver a compelling cinematic experience and respectfully pay homage to the source material...or is it a fan service-laden train wreck that destroys the legacy of everyone's favorite grasshopper hero? And where does this entry rank in the Shin Japan Heroes Universe?
Besides the analysis of Shin Kamen Rider, special guest Ryan Wilhelm shows off his recent toy pickups, discuss what it's like to be a kaiju fan right now, and much, much more!
Enjoy this bonus episode of YHS on Monster Island!

One thing is for sure, the kaiju fandom and film critics alike are going crazy for this new Toho release – and its winning over fans and smashing records like no other film in the franchise. Lastly, it can’t be an episode of YHS on Monster Island without some toy pickups? This week brings us a Shin-tastic X-Plus and a special ToygrapH piece that is sure to impress!
Happy Thanksgiving!

After a long slumber, Gamera is back in the all-new Netflix anime series, GAMERA: REBIRTH. Our beloved hosts, Jacob Walsh and Jay Key, break down the series and grade some of the major components of the show - visuals/animation, kaiju design, characters, etc. It's more art than science - but the big question is: did they like it?
In addition to Rebirth, Jake and Jay both weigh in on the trailers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and (a bit belated) Godzilla: Minus One. Also, they highlight some recent and upcoming toy drops from Anraku Ansaku, Marusan, and X-Plus.
And it wouldn't be a YHS on Monster Island without some kaiju toy pick-ups - this time including a few botantical beasties, a small Spectreman surprise, and wave one from Super7.
Have fun on the island!
With "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh at DragonCon, Jay mans the island by himself this week to recap a successful Kaiju Go! event in Fort Worth this past weekend, discuss the launch of the US Godzilla Store site, share his excitement over the return of Jet Jaguar, and admit to corrupting IDW cover artist John Yurcaba's mind with Spectreman!
On top of this, Jay has a ton of fun pick-ups ranging from vintage to X-Plus, designer vinyl to signed prints!
Enjoy YHS on Monster Island!
In this episode of YHS on Monster Island, Jake and Jay highlight some of their favorite toys that would fall into the zany category, leaving us asking the same question over and over - "Why'd they make this?".
But it's not all silly toys, as our favorite tandem of tokusatsu talkers dish out some recent toy news from Marusan and Medicom/Anraku Ansaku, discuss Jake's budding author career, and debate if Mondo's SpaceGodzilla ("Trendy" variant) is worthy of "Kaiju Toy of the Year" consideration.
All this and a whole lot more on YHS on Monster Island!
In this episode of YHS on Monster Island, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and Toku Toy Town's Jay Key provide insight and commentary on the kaiju happenings at San Diego Comic-Con and Wonder Festival 2023 Summer, plus provide their thoughts on the Godzilla: Minus One teaser. It's a can't miss episode!
It's a special Friday edition of YHS on Monster Island: Monster Island Live! Oh yeah, and this was his FIRST G-FEST!!! We are going to recap the amazing weekend in beautiful Rosemont, IL - did Ryan have a good time? Does he have any money left? What are some of his favorite memories? Don't worry, we won't get into any news or discussions on "Minus One"...it's all about G-Fest!
As Jake and Jay prepare for San Diego Comic-Con and G-Fest respectively, they find time to chat about the recently released MonsterVerse entry - SKULL ISLAND. The two break down their likes and dislikes of the Netflix anime - do you agree? Disagree?
Also, Jay has a big haul of pick-ups this week including a litany of Ultra goodies from Marmit, Bear Model, and USToys - plus a few. more Marusan '89s to add to the collection. In addition, the duo talks Pluto TV, James Groman's upcoming Mondo Godzilla release, and much more!
Toho's "A" Team. Check. Two bonafide stars of film and television. Check. Trampolines. Super check. On paper, everything looks (blood) rock solid for 1969's US-Japan co-production of LATITUDE ZERO - but, it was definitely a paper tiger (errr...gryphon?)...because it was one of the studio's biggest flops. Our YHS on Monster Island hosts, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, share their thoughts on this unique entry from Toho's cinematic roster - and why it may not be remembered in the same manner as other tokusatsu films. Everything from Joseph Cotten's multiple costume changes to "The Joker" and his "Batmen" to the (in)famous gryphon kaiju that is, well, it's something - nothing is off limits for our duo of daikiaju devotees.
But wait! That's not all! The tandem also discusses a ton of toy news from Mondo and Max Toy Co. (among others), their own weekly pick-ups which include some great Godzilland finds and Jay's return to X-Plus, and Jake's recent viewing of The Black Demon (2023).
It's always a fun trip to YHS on Monster Island - your home for kaiju films, fandom, television, and toys!
YHS on Monster Island takes a look at the pioneering tokusatsu show, 1966's Ultra Q, and ranks its top ten offerings. Tsuburaya's initial entry into the Ultra series kickstarted a tokusatsu boom that would take over Japanese airwaves only a few years later, giving way to the iconic Ultraman, Ultraseven, and many more. But this unique and ground-breaking series gave fans of kaiju, seijin, and just flat out good storytelling some memorable episodes, characters, and - of course- monsters. Join Jun, Yuri, Ippei, Garamon, Gomess, Peguila, Kanegon, and many more as YHS on Monster Island presents "The Top 10 Episodes of Ultra Q".
IDW comic artist, JOHN YURCABA IV (Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors - All Hail the King!), and beloved kaiju influencer and toy aficionado, RYAN WILHELM (Collect All Monsters, YHS on Monster Island), join JAY KEY for another edition of MONSTER ISLAND LIVE! The trio discuss the final season of the Netflix anime, ULTRAMAN, plus a litany of kaiju news from the worlds of film, fandom, television, and toys! Topics range from John's love of Gundam to Ryan's initial thoughts on Shin Kamen Rider to Jay's latest pick-ups, including a Tom Whalen Ultraseven print and the first ever release from designer toy company, Chazbro Toys - the sofubi ape idol, BANG KONG.
This week's YHS on Monster Island is a free-form discussion on a litany of topics - from the MonsterVerse to Marusan, Crazy Tsunami to crazy combining robot toys. Nothing is off limits as Jake and Jay go through what they've been watching, what they've been buying, and what they think on recent news items.
What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than with a film about the greatest monster mama of them all?
This installment of YHS on Monster Island is jam-packed with kaiju goodness, including a full review of the 1961 British-Irish-American co-production, Gorgo. Jake and Jay discuss suit design, who is actually the real protagonist, and if this movie had the most powerful net in the history of cinema! On top of reviewing the "Big G" - okay, the other "Big G" - okay, the third "Big G", the duo talk pick-ups including some Harryhausen awesomeness and more BioGojis, Jay's recent obscure tokusatsu binge into the worlds of Fireman, Mirrorman, and Spectreman, why it's hard to rank Ultra Q episodes, a host of toy reveals from Super Festival 85 and the 6th Mandarake Creative Sofubi Rally, Gamera: Rebirth giving us a tentative release date and a teaser image of Zigra, animal rights, and the first (and only) edition of Gorgo Movie Posters from Around the World!
It's a wild and chaotic episode, no doubt...so enjoy!
YHS on Monster Island returns and, like everyone else on the internet, they have to share their opinions on the controversial teaser trailer that dropped for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In addition, our hosts discuss the internet gem that is Quazies, some cool new releases from Bandai, updates on Titanic Creations' Gorgo stretch goals, and a big announcement regarding a Dallas-area event called Kaiju Go! As always, Jake and Jay will share their weekly kaiju collectible pick-ups!
YHS on Monster Island returns to review the recently acquired South Korean film, Space Monster Wangmagwi…and it’s a doozy! Not only do we get a creepy monster (and not in the horror film “creepy” way), we witness the kaiju genre’s first inner ear canal urination scene, terrible paper mâché monster feet, and the very best in retro sci-fi costuming! Can Jay’s compliment sandwich do enough to salvage Wangmagwi’s reputation or will Jake toss it back into the lost and (not) found drawer in the Korean film archive?
But it’s not just the review on this week’s episode, the duo goes over recently pick-ups ranging from Marmit to Marusan to Trendmasters - and includes a Top 10 Wishlist acquisition! Other quick hitters include Jay’s hatred for Gyaos, the greatness of Sinbad, and the struggle of making a top 10 episode list for Ultra Q.
It’s a fun one on the Island…so join us!
With Jake vacationing in Seatopia, Jay has invited kaiju expert and toy collector extraordinaire, Ryan Wilhelm of Dallas Vintage Toys, to the island to discuss the recently released Gamera: Rebirth trailer, new pre-orders and releases from Mondo, Titanic Creations, Bandai, Marusan, Bullmark, and more, plus show off some really rockin' kaiju collectible pick-ups! It's a special LIVE edition of YHS on Monster Island!
YHS on Monster Island returns and takes a look at the polarizing 2004 entry and finale of the Millennium series, Godzilla: Final Wars...and what better way to do that than have "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh reveal his Top 10 kaiju designs (or, more accurately, re-designs)? Our host minces no words as he discusses what went right, wrong...and very wrong...with the likes of Keizer Ghidorah, Anguirus, Monster X, and the entire Final Wars kaiju roster.
On top of reviewing the film, Jacob and Jay touch on some recent toy news from Marusan, Star Ace/X-Plus, and compare the upcoming wacky Hedorah releases from Medicom Toy x Akashic Records and Swimmy Design Lab. Jay also provides a recap of Toku Toy Town's weekend at Retro Expo and his run-in with a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer! Of course, it wouldn't be YHS on Monster Island without weekly pick-ups...and though it's a light week on that front, it doesn't stop our dynamic duo of daikaiju devotees from detouring on topics such as Jay's fear of Harryhausen collecting and Super Mario Bros. toys.
As always, please leave us a rating and review...and subscribe to the channel to get your latest on kaiju films, fandom, television, and toys!

Our duo of daikaiju devotees, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, return to bash the 1957 Toho sci-fi classic, The Mysterians, with a hatred not seen since War of the God Monsters. Maybe they just don't share that same love of primary colors, large underwear, and repetitive explosions? But, in an effort to save the episode, the tandem go through Jay's DesignerCon Top 10 and highlight the efforts from some of our favorites: Rocom Toys, Max Toy Co, Mondo, and many more.
But that's not all! They tackle recent kaiju collectibles news from Star Ace, Mezco, Medicom Toy, and others...plus, weekly pick-ups!
Go ahead and head on over the YHS on Monster Island...which also happens to be 3 kilometers!

Aside from Godzilla Day, the hosts talk about recent releases from Super Festival Extra Vol. 5, their excitement for DesignerCon, and some really toy drops from X-Plus, Marusan, Medicom Toy, and more. Oh yeah, Netflix also surprised the entire kaiju community with news of Gamera: Rebirth! Wow!

Yes, we are the idiots that podcasted the night BEFORE Godzilla Day - so you don't get to hear us freak out over the BIG news or even a majority of the releases! But, fear not, we will be back to dive deep into all of the goings on around November 3rd during our next installment.
But what do we talk about then? How about Jake's introduction to Kamen Rider (1971) - his thoughts on human bats, scarves, Rider Kicks!, and cyborg babes in fishnet stockings! But no, that's not all - we discuss our anticipation for Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex and Godzilla Fest 3: Attack on Gigan, what we think may or may not happen on Godzilla Day (spoiler: we are idiots), recent Bandai Movie Monster Series news, Fantazzzy's latest release, and a flurry of weekly pick-ups that include a certain autographed egg that makes Jay a more complete human.
Go ahead and prep the Moonlight SY-3 and head on over to YHS on Monster Island!

With Jake back from New York Comic-Con, the hosts discuss the big releases from Super7 - the good and the bad, plus other kaiju collectible news from Marusan and the Tsuburaya Store. In addition, our tandem updates each other on their own personal state of collecting..is Jake getting ride of his NECA Godzilla collection? Is Jay giving up on Mezco? Where do they stand with X-Plus? Does Jay have room for any more sofubi?
Also, Jay shares his three big pick-ups including a new "top 5" piece of sofubi from SecretBase, a much anticipated X-Plus delivery, and some "creepy eyes". Like, subscribe, but most importantly - ENJOY!
With the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh at NYCC this week, there won't be a traditional YHS on Monster Island show...however, Jay Key has continued his rankings of Ultra series episodes; this time, tackling Ultraseven!
What episodes of Dan Moroboshi and the Ultra Guard will crack the Top 10? Which episodes will be left out? Can famed ultra seijin and kaiju like Eleking, King Joe, Dinosaur Tank, and Metron make the cut? Remember, this list is for starting debates...not ending them!
Enjoy...and check out YHS on Monster Island!
Our hosts are joined by Yes Have Some Podcast's Abigail Gardner to discuss the 1961 Toho classic, Mothra.
In addition, the crew touches on the recently released teaser of Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, the proverbial gauntlet being thrown down by the All Monsters Attack Convention directly at G-Fest, some exciting new reveals from Super Festival Extra Volume 4, and a long list of weekly pick-ups!
Check it out!

The intrepid duo of daikaiju devotees, Jacob Walsh and Jay Key, return with another episode of YHS on Monster Island. In this release, Jay gives Jake a litany of possible antagonists for the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong 2 - and the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" tells us why they would or wouldn't make sense. Let's hope Legendary is listening!
In addition, the tandem review the 2009 short, Geharha, the Dark and Long-haired Monster, and go over recent kaiju toy news and weekly pick-ups! Enjoy!
On this episode of YHS on Monster Island, the intrepid duo of daikaiju devotees, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu", Jacob Walsh and sidekick, Jay Key, dive into the 1953 cinematic triumph - The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. The conversation covers everything from the Rhedosaurus' claim as the "first kaiju", the timely usage of Ra Bradbury's "The Fog Horn", the film's importance in the kaiju genre, as well as a handful of tangents ranging from Bradbury's " A Sound of Thunder" to the charming nature of outdated dinosaur paleobiology.
On top of that, Jake and Jay go through some recent news such as Disney+'s Kong series announcement, Marusan's Soft Vinyl Summer Festa exclusives, and much more! We also get some top flight weekly pick ups from Marmit, M1, SHMonsterArts, just to name a few! Check out YHS on Monster Island...and please like and subscribe! It means alot!

It's not fair that Godzilla vs. Gigan gets ALL of the 50th anniversary love! There was another little Toho project that came out in 1972 - a co-production with Tsuburaya - that deserves some respect: Daigoro vs. Goliath! Okay, maybe deserving respect might be too much for this film - but hey, it...uh...exists. And "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and his co-conspirator, Jay Key, are here to discuss this oft forgotten kaiju gem. From monster-sized toilets to excessive alcohol consumption to domestic violence, it has everything one expects in a kids' movie! However, the most compelling thing about Daigoro vs. Goliath is what it COULD have been!
In addition to the film, Jake and Jay discuss Kurt Russell in the Monsterverse, weekly pick-ups, Shin Ultraman's international release news, and some new reveals by Marusan for the Godzilla Store. Please leave a positive review wherever you choose to consume YHS on Monster Island!
It’s G-Fest versus San Diego Comic-Con. Monsters in the Midwest versus SoCal Kaiju. G-Fans versus sun tans. Our hosts discuss their recent trips to these beloved events and compare notes on all facets of the convention experience. “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh headed westward to try and tackle the biggest beast in the battle, the mecca of media news and the pinnacle of pop culture and celebrity – San Diego Comic-Con. He talks about his experience as press and thoughts on all of the huge news, reveals, and teases from Mondo, Super7, Mezco, Toho, and more. “The Mayor of Toku Toy Town” left the comforts of his soft vinyl home and ventured back to his old stomping grounds – Chicago – for a weekend of rubber suited madness! Jay enlightens us on his top moments from G-Fest – from the panels to the vendor hall, from meeting friends to meeting tokusatsu celebrities. Both provide a nice glimpse into what each of these gatherings are like – warts and all!
But those weren’t the only two major events over the past few weeks…Tokusatsu DNA 2022 and Wonder Festival 2022 Summer both happened in Japan and produced a kaiju-sized quantity of new toy reveals from X-Plus, Sarujirushi, PassionTank, M1, U.S.TOYS, Marusan, and many more!
YHS on Monster Island is honored to have a special interview with kaiju art royalty, the incomparable Attack Peter! Peter shares details on his rise to stardom, from his unique linoleum block printing style to his relationships with Toho and Mondo, to his exciting Kickstarter around his popular Takoro character. You can't say enough good things about Peter - and he is truly representing the kaiju community on the grand scale!
Link to his upcoming Kickstarter: https://www.skybound.com/attack-peter-kickstarter
In addition to the interview, Jake and Jay review weekly pick-ups, Jake's headlong dive into the Harryhausen X-Plus rabbit hole, and Jay breaks down his plans for G-Fest in Chicago!

Question: What do Takashi Miike, Valley of Gwangi, and Ted Lasso have in common?
Answer: They all managed to be brought up in this week’s episode of YHS of Monster Island.
“The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh and “The Mayor of Toku Toy Town” Jay Key somehow talk about a lot and about nothing at the same time as they navigate through topics ranging from their current feelings and anticipation for the three upcoming Monsterverse projects, recent releases from Super 7, X-Plus, and Passion Tank, SRS Cinema’s big announcement regarding Space Monster Wangmagwi, recent yokai film viewings, and Shin Ultraman. Oh yeah, and they have tons of toy pick-ups that include a 1966 Marusan Godzilla and the hard-to-find Marusan “Night Raid Sparkle” Gigan!
Join the conversation and enjoy!

YHS on Monster Island's "Mayor of Toku Toy Town", Jay Key, takes a look back at 1966's Ultraman and gives us his top ten list.

YHS on Monster Island is a bi-weekly podcast that reviews all things kaiju - from films to fandom, television to toys! Hosts Jacob Walsh - "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" and YHS co-founder, and Jay Key - science fiction author and founder of Toku Toy Town, will help you scratch that rubber suited monster itch...and maybe spend some extra money on sofubi!
Following up on their review of Frankenstein Conquers the World, your favorite kaiju hosts return to discuss its kinda, sorta, quasi-, pseudo-spiritual sequel - The War of the Gargantuas. It's a rip-roarin' rampage through this rubber-suited monster flick - a journey that leads you to maser cannons, tons of atmospheric lighting, a songstress that hasn't quite perfected her craft, Brad Pitt's origin story, and lots of Russ Tamblyn.
On top of the film conversation, Jake and Jay highlight some of the biggest and best toy reveals from Super Festival Extra Volume 2 and go through Jay's army-building weekly pick-ups!
The words definitely did not get stuck in our hosts’ throats…

Frankenstein Conquers the World! But does he really? On this episode of YHS on Monster Island, “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh and Jay Key take a swing at the 1965 Toho release, Frankenstein Conquers the World. It has all of the makings of a golden era classic – Honda directing, Tsuburaya doing his thang, an Ifukube score, and cast chock full o’ regulars like Kumi Mizuno, Yoshia Tsuchiya, Tadao Takashima, and Takashi Shimura, and even good ol’ Nick Adams drops in to lead the way! On top of that, you have an alternative ending that makes absolutely no sense! But does all that, mixed with an original interpretation of the Frankenstein story lead to a top tier film? Tune in to find out what our intrepid duo of daikaiju devotees have to say about when Frankie goes to Japan!

Wait, what? YHS on Monster Island is celebrating one year of giving us kaiju fans everything we ever wanted - from the "spine gap" to "kaiju on the side", from damning Godzilla vs. Megaguirus to the 7th lair of bad movie Hades to defending the misunderstood cinematic achievements that are Ebirah, Horror of the Deep and Yamato Takeru. Yes, we made it one whole friggin' year! And how do the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key celebrate? They watch Godzilla Raids Again...uhhh...yep.
But it's not just our intrepid duo taking about bad dino science, Minoru Chiaki love, and dancing - oh no, we also get a host of pick-ups, including a Top 10 Wishlist get, and some recent toy news! It will make you laugh, cry, and buy vinyl toys covered in glitter...it's YHS on Monster Island!

The YHS on Monster Island crew is back and cover a host of topics ranging from the passing of the iconic Akira Takarada to breaking news from Legendary's MonsterVerse to Super7 Ultimates being revealed to toy show experiences at Toylanta (Atlanta, GA) and Retro Expo (Plano, TX). It's a fun ride...so "mind the spine gap" and let's talk kaiju!
Happy 50th, Gigan! The intrepid hosts of YHS on Monster Island go back to 1972 and tackle a film that brings us everything that we need - corn-on-the-cob, cockroaches, rock climbing fatalities, action tapes, and World Children's Land! Yes, of course, they are talking Godzilla vs. Gigan - but do they love this blood-splashing live action manga? Or are they overcome with the onslaught of stock footage and talking kaiju? Tune in to find out!
But it's not all gabbing about Gigan...Jake and Jay cover recent news including the new Toho short film project (okay, that IS about Gigan) and recent Super7 teases. In the "What Did We Pick Up Segment", we get some Marusan BioGojis and the creation of "The Orochi Club". Enjoy!
It's another YHS on Monster Island - but this one is missing our fearless leader, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh. However, don't fret, because Jay is given a mic and no rules! "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" waxes poetic about topics ranging from The Legend of Firefly Marsh to Ultraman '66 to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. He also revisits the Geoffrey Awards and the winner of the Kaiju Toy Line of the Year - Marusan 350. Lastly, Jay tackles (or tries to) why the kaiju community lacks regional fandoms and what would be his initial class in a Sofubi Hall of Fame.
It's fun, it's weird, and a bit all over the place...it's the one-man booth version of YHS on Monster Island. Hopefully, the island will survive...
Your intrepid hosts of YHS on Monster Island take you on a trip from Wonderfest to Lobsterfest as they review the recent toy reveals from Wonderfest 2022 in Japan and have a fun discussion around why everyone shouldn’t hate on Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (aka Godzilla vs. The Sea Monsters) so much! “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh and the “Mayor of Toku Toy Town” Jay Key are pretty passionate in their appreciation of Ebirah – and throw out some hot takes that are sure to start some arguments among kaiju fans! Oh, and Mothra, the Flying Dracula Monster is a real thing – just ask any daikaiju-digging Dutchman!
As always, our hosts share their weekly kaiju collectible pick-ups and this is one for the ages! There’s glitter, there’s exclusives, there’s sofubi and statues, and there’s an eBay steal of a lifetime!
Welcome to YHS on Monster Island…where you get your #kaijuontheside!
This episode of YHS on Monster Island is brought to you by the letter "X".
"The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and his sidekick, Jay Key, tackle not one - but two- kaiju flicks from Shochiku: 1967's The X from Outer Space and 2008's follow-up, Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit. If you aren't already familiar with these films - hold on tight - because they offer a little bit of everything, from truly original kaiju design to moon dancing to famous cameos to Kim Jong-Il. Most notably, it demonstrates two very unique ways that kaiju can stop deadly missiles. So grab a cocktail, check for any Guilalanium, put on your headphones (make sure they aren't the brainwashing kind), and start chanting "Neci-Coma" - because YHS on Monster Island is taking you to GuiLALA-Land!
In addition to reviewing these two movies, Jake and Jay discuss some big news items such as Apple TV+'s upcoming Monsterverse series, a new Marusan 350 BioGoji, and SH Monster Arts' Singular Point Rodan! Oh, and is there a new Guilala toy? Now that's timing. And don't forget weekly pick-ups!
Is there a better New Year's resolution than becoming a kaiju fan? We don't think so! On this week's installment of YHS on Monster Island, Jake and Jay are joined by Godzilla newbie, Abigail Gardner (Yes Have Some Podcast, Toy Anxiety, The Boba Book Club), as she discusses her journey into this wacky and wonderful world of rubber-suited monsters. Abbey discusses the films and kaiju that she's fallen in love with - and the ones that she could live without. From weekly pick-ups and appreciating the artistic nature of sofubi to what's on her "to watch" list, the hosts and Abbey cover it all! She proves that, though it may seem daunting, anyone can (and should) dive into kaiju in 2022!
In addition to the wonderful chat with Abbey, Jake and Jay get the pleasure of talking to Michael Hamilton of Kaiju Ramen Magazine, Kaiju Weekly, and The Power Trip Podcast about their latest kickstart - Kaiju Ramen: Volume I. Michael is a wealth of knowledge and his enthusiasm for this project is contagious! Please, everyone, go out and back this project!
Thanks for listening and please leave a rating and review...it means a lot!

It’s the holiday season and, let’s not kid ourselves, that means one thing – toys! And when you’re on Monster Island, that means kaiju toys! This week, our favorite two hosts – “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh and “The Mayor of Toku Toy Town” Jay Key – unveil their respective Top 10 Kaiju Collectibles Wishlist!
In addition to the wishlist, the duo cover some of the top news – from Shin Ultraman to the opening salvo of Gigan merchandise getting ready to hit in 2022 for his 50th birthday – and share weekly pick-ups (including Jake’s massive haul from the Kaiju Days pop-up shop)!
It’s time for some YHS on Monster Island!
On this episode of YHS on Monster Island, the boss is away…and when “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh is gone, Jay Key assembled a dream team of Kaiju All-Stars to discuss why they love this fascinating sub-genre of collecting – sofubi!
Joining Jay is the founder of the Hedorah Fanatics Club and collecting legend, Andy Peters; owner of Monster Lou’s Clothing and kaiju Instagrammer, Lou Munster; Ryan Wilhelm of Dallas Vintage Toys; and Michael Hamilton of Kaiju Weekly podcast and Kaiju Ramen Magazine.
The crew talks how they got into sofubi, how they manage and display their collections, and can a sofubi addiction co-exist with the more realistic X-Plus type figures? They show off and discuss their favorite pieces, chase pieces and so much more!
**Please note that Jay has to leave after the first twenty minutes so you get a really cool, non-moderated discussion with four of the best collecting minds in the sofubi space!
The one question that has plagued humankind for far too long isn't "what is the meaning of life?" or "does anything really matter"...oh no...it's simply "is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man a kaiju?". Our hosts attempt to answer that very question - but first, they must lay some groundwork on how they define "kaiju" and how do those rules apply to not just Stay Puft but also creatures such as Mighty Joe Young, the graboids from Tremors, Alien Baltan, werewolves, rampaging dinosaurs that have survived to live in our time, and many more! It's about as nerdy of a conversation as you're going to find - and who better to discuss it than the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" and Ghostbusters expert Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key?
In addition to the big question at hand, the duo review recent toy news - ranging from XM Studios jaw-dropping Shin Godzilla and GMKGoji busts to Medicom announcing a Kilaaks set for an upcoming lottery to Tako Kong - and their recent pick-ups. It's a wild ride so make sure you soma berry cocktails are refreshed and enjoy YHS on Monster Island!
YHS on Monster Island goes fully cosmic! Telepathy. The Yakuza. The worst battle scene ever filmed. A live action chibi Goji. And the fastest moving love story in movie history. Welcome to the overly-crystallized world of 1994's Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla. "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusastu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key explore what works in this film...and what doesn't...and what is simply painful (how's it going, M.O.G.U.E.R.A.?). Both hosts have a deep connection to Space Godzilla - so will that influence their objective review of this cinematic spectacle? And who wins in the argument around if Little Godzilla's design "works"? It's an episode that is sure to pack a punch equal to that of a Yuki's Special.
Long before the South Korean film industry was putting out groundbreaking and critically beloved flicks like The Host and Parasite, they bestowed upon the world such epic daikaiju dumpster fires as Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) and War of the God Monsters (1985). The question isn't if the "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key enjoyed these two movies - it's if they survived them. Though Yongary's historical significance on the Korean film world is legitimate and undeniable, it provides little shelter from itchy monster dances, rectal bleeding, poorly hidden flame throwers, and thinly veiled metaphors regarding South Korea's geo-political views following the Korean War. It helps redefine the word "boring". But less than twenty years later, the world was treated to what can only be described as the cinematic interpretation of insanity in its purest form. Stock footage Tsuburaya monsters described as "dinosaurs". Bones that may or may not cause children to get sick. Uncomfortable emotional and physical abuse. A sociopathic pre-teen. And that baby scene...oh, that baby scene. Maybe there was a reason this film was lost.
In addition to traversing the landscape of South Korean kaiju, Jake and Jay discuss some hot news items such as the approaching Godzilla Day and the two huge announcements - the official Toho short, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (in honor of Hedorah's 50th anniversary), and Super7's tease of their next reveal (the first wave of Ultimates, maybe?). The two hosts also compare pick-ups; Jake flexes his cute credentials with a "pumpkin" Negora and LitGodzi Space Godzilla cup...Jay battles back with a cool MaxToyCo Ultraman and a set of Eiji Tsuburaya 100th anniversary finger puppets from Yutaka.
It's October - which means we are contractually allowed to venture away from classic kaiju and into the realm of human-sized monsters and horror! But we won't stray too far, as we are staying with Toho and the 1963 classic, Matango (aka Attack of the Mushroom People)! This is an in-depth conversation on the genre-bending film based on the 1907 William H. Hodgson short story, The Voice in the Night, and brought to life by a "who's who" of Toho legends - Ishiro Honda, Tomoyuki Tanaka, Eiji Tsuburaya, Hiroshi Koizumi, Akira Kubo, Kumi Mizuno, Yoshio Tsuchiya, and many more! But how did the hallowed horror historian, Jacob Walsh, feel about this foray into early Japanese body horror? Is he even awake yet after his whirlwind trip to New York Comic-Con?
Also on the episode, Jake and Jay review their recent sofubi pick-ups that included a nice array of subjects - from the custom cat kaiju, Negora, to the beautiful Shobijin to yet another Titanosaurus for Jay's collection.
Fire up the maser cannons, gas up the Moonlight SY-3, and polish your space titanium, because it's time to get a little kaijuontheside with YHS on Monster Island!
YHS on Monster Island - What Kaiju Need a Reboot or Reimagining?
Kaiju world rejoice! "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key have returned to record together - and what better way to get back on the horse (kaiju?) than discussing ways to give some love to undervalued and underappreciated monsters? It's a little bit fantasy filmmaking, a little bit intellectual kaiju commentary - but mostly it's just weird. After all, can Jay really sell us on the idea of a new Varan movie? Can a horror historian like Jake convince us that Godzilla could be creepy and scary for an entire film? Is there any point to saving Minya? And what about all of those alien races in the Toho universe? Your favorite hosts dive deep into these questions on this episode of YHS on Monster Island!
But that's not all! Jake and Jay discuss some recent film re-watches that range from the absurd (the alternate ending of Little Shop of Horrors) to the absurd-er (Gamera: Super Monster), kaiju collectible news (looking at you, Mezco!), and some personal collection-defining toy pick-ups including a Jacob Walsh "grail"! Also, did Jay just complete his Yamato Takeru mini-collection?
Listen now and get your #kaijuontheside!
In a YHS Universe first, the two hosts of YHS on Monster Island - "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key - go head-to-head (kinda) as they both review 1986's KING KONG LIVES in isolation from one another (probably in that damn bunker in Georgia with Lady Kong). They don't know what each other thinks of the film - so you, loyal and valued listener, get to see if they are truly in sync like they tend to be on the show...or if this will result in a schism that their personal and professional friendship cannot withstand. Tune in to find out that and, at the end of the day, it's a movie with alligator-eating apes, giant artificial hearts, drunk rednecks, Linda Hamilton, glorious '80's feathered hair, and a bold cinematic choice from Director John Guillermin that involves a frog. It's King Kong Lives!!!
Once again, Jay tries to turn Monster Island into Dinosaur Island...boy, is he lost without the leadership of "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh. This episode is a quick recap of the 2-part pilot episode of 1988's Denver, the Last Dinosaur; and Jay tries to answer questions such as: what was the true essence and message of Denver, the Last Dinosaur? What place does it deserve in the ecosystem of dinosaur pop culture? Does anyone care? Probably not. So just be thankful this is only 20 minutes.
“Denver, the last dinosaur, He's my friend and a whole lot more. Denver, the last dinosaur, Shows me a world I never saw before.”
YHS on Monster Island - I Guess We're Doing Godzilla 1998
If you want to listen to "The Tattooed Titan of Tokasatsu" Jacob Walsh act as a truth-telling troubadour trumpeting the trial and tribulations of Tri-Star...this is your episode...and YHS on Monster Island is your podcast. Mr. Walsh and his spunky sidekick, Jay Key, tackle the most maligned Godzilla film in the series - Godzilla (1998). More so than any other movie in the franchise save Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the "what ifs" and lore surrounding the production have become bigger than the film itself. Our hosts discuss those very aspects of this bloated and misguided flick along with everything from the seemingly unlimited merchandise to the lack of emotional connection to the characters (or, at least, the emotional connection that was intended by the filmmakers) to the radical design of the King of the Marine Iguanas. An interesting question is raised - if you applaud the new and unique approaches to Godzilla such as Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Earth, and Godzilla Ultima, can you not give credit to the Tri-Star interpretation for being, quite possibly, the furthest from the original concept?
All of this, plus Jay and Jake share their most recent toy purchases including the X-Plus Gigantic Godzilla 1954, a 2003 Marmit Varan, and...did Jay really buy Yamato Takeru figures?

On this week's installment of YHS on Monster Island, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key deep dive into the latest from the world of kaiju collectibles. From the controversial Mondo sofubi drop to the recent exclusives from Marusan, U.S. Toys, and Medicom to the surprise releases from Mezco and Playmates, our heralded hosts attack each topic like the Moonlight SY-3 going after a Kilaak ship. What did Jacob think about the Super7 Shogun Godzilla? Did Mezco win them over with a flocked Mothra? How much hate mail will Jay get after his comments on Anraku Ansaku?
After talking toys, Jake poses the question: now that Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla: Singular Point are old news, what's next for our favorite radioactive monster? As expected, this turns into some fantasy filmmaking of the highest order!
All of this, plus the duo reviews their latest personal toy pick ups - ranging from Burning Cat-Zilla to a LitGodzi Space Godzilla to a golden Gezora to a Nishikawa BioGoji!

"The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key goes solo to tackle the 1969 Ray Harryhausen classic, The Valley of Gwangi, and attempt to overcome his decades long indecision about the merits of this plucky little film. We get dinosaurs battling cowboys, dinosaurs battling dinosaurs, dinosaurs battling elephants, dinosaurs eating evil gypsy dwarves, cinema's longest roping scene, a former Miss World runner-up, and an Eohippus. I mean...come on! Gwangi's influence is far reaching, there is no denying that, but does it hold up today? And why is Jay reviewing it anyways...this is a kaiju podcast, not a dinosaur podcast?

Godzilla: Singular Point has taken the kaiju world by (a big red dust) storm! But does one need an advanced understanding of temporal physics to enjoy it...or can you just sit back and watch Jet Jaguar slice and dice his way through a swarm of Megalon-Kumonga-Hedorah-Kamacuras-Gigan hybrids and be satisfied? YHS on Monster Island's hosts, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, try and answer just that - plus, what monster designs delivered, how it improved on the last Godzilla anime, did it handle time travel better or worse than Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and what may be in store for season two. It's an episode jam-packed with a metric ton of technobabble (not really) befitting of a podcast that even Ashihara considered the undiscovered 14th stage of the red dust (not really), breaching time and space beyond what was ever thought possible by the Archetype (also, not really).
In addition to Godzilla: Singular Point, the hosts share their sofubi and LitGodzi hauls and Jay shares some quick thoughts on Birth of Japan/The Three Treasures and The Howl from Beyond the Fog.
Also, use promo code YHS10 at TokuToyTown.com for 10% any purchase! No minimums. No usage limit. No expiration. YHS10 gets YOU 10% off any kaiju collectible, tokusatsu toy, or rare sofubi at Toku Toy Town!
What happens when "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and co-host Jay Key recommend films to each other that the other one hasn't seen before? You get the first ever Great Kaiju Cinema Swap! Four movies. Four very different movies. Spanning nearly four decades of cinema, our beloved hosts dive deep into a quartet of kaiju and kaiju-adjacent flicks ranging from a zany 1970 "giant monsters fight on a tropical island" film that could be the final nail in the coffin of the golden era of kaiju eiga; to a 1994 epic fantasy steeped in Japanese folklore but somehow manages to weave in were-wizards with laser beam eyes, lightsabers, and a final confrontation between an eight-headed King Ghidorah and a Megazord; to a 2006 Korean critical masterpiece that tackles multiple themes brilliantly under the guise of a dark absurdist satire; to an American entry from 2008 that broke all previous molds of successful viral marketing and solidified the term "found footage" into the moviegoing lexicon. We give you: Space Amoeba, Yamato Takeru, The Host, and Cloverfield.
Did they love them? Did they hate them? Are they still doing the podcast after subjecting each other to these films? Tune in to find out!

Some movies are supposed to be "bad" because they're intentionally poking fun at films that are simply bad. Some movies are the films that are simply bad. YHS on Monster Island's Jay Key takes a look at two instances where a low budget indie kaiju film tries to be a successful parody of the genre - one nails it, one is almost unwatchable. It's 2010's Death Kappa from the mind of Ultraman veteran, Tomoo Haraguchi, versus the Reigo/Raiga Trilogy from beloved fan favorite multi-tasker, Shinpei Hayashiya. Will the irradiated creature of Japanese folklore and his love of bad Japanese pop music deliver? Or will it be the three-part series about the lightning-summoning kaiju with a penchant for urinating on cities that excels? Who the hell knows? Is anyone even listening?

It’s the dawn of the disco era and the Godzilla franchise decides to change direction and leave behind the golden era of Toho with a psychedelic avant-garde film that’s equal parts environmentally-charged horror flick and Saturday morning superhero kids show. It’s a story of unproduced sequels, appendectomies, and a brash director that dared to make Godzilla fly. It’s 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah!
On top of that, “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh, and his alliteration-loving sidekick, Jay Key, talk Matango, Atragon, recent kaiju collectible news, and our latest toy and sofubi pick-ups!
