Hi! My name is Saskia de Feijter and welcome to the Pattern Shift podcast. In this podcast, I support overwhelmed small business owners in the fiber and needlecraft industry, helping them set up and organize their businesses for growth and personal well-being. Together, we can be a force for good and a counterbalance to fast fashion, helping makers craft garments and accessories slowly and more sustainably. You can be part of that change and make a profit in the process.
The podcast Pattern Shift is created by Saskia de Feijter. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
SUMMARY
Hi friends! I’m wrapping up the year with a heartfelt reflection on growth, creativity, and intentional living. I share how tools like Bullet Journaling and the Year Compass help me process my year, lessons I’ve learned about overcoming self-doubt, and the joy I’ve found in crafting as therapy. Looking to 2025, I’m excited (and a little nervous!) to start a “no-buy year” to encourage mindful consumption. On the business side, I’ll focus on refining what I’ve built instead of chasing the next big thing. Join me for a mix of vulnerability, inspiration, and practical tips as we reflect and grow together.
"Crafting helped me rest without guilt—it felt productive but restorative at the same time."

In this episode, we explore the enchanting yet complex world of fiber advent calendars. These holiday treasures bring joy and nostalgia to makers, but they also pose challenges for small fiber businesses creating them. We discuss the potential for overconsumption among buyers and the heavy production burden on sellers, all while asking: Is the excitement worth the cost? I share insights on finding balance, sustainability, and profitability, plus some creative ideas for advent calendars that prioritize purpose over trend. If you’re ready to rethink the holiday craze, tune in for some valuable perspective.

Autumn's gentle embrace brings both warmth and wistfulness, a duality that mirrors the journey through age and identity. As the leaves change, so too does our perspective on self-image and creativity. Join me as I share my personal reflections on maintaining authenticity while confronting societal norms. From reconsidering bold hair colors of my younger days to finding solace in knitting and spinning, discover how embracing change is an art in itself. The cozy melancholy of the season isn't just a backdrop; it's a catalyst for reevaluating how we express our true selves and connect with others who share our vision.
Ever thought of taking fashion into your own hands, literally? With Caroline's expert guidance, I ventured into the exhilarating world of sewing to craft my ski wear collection. This isn’t just about making clothes; it's a rebellion against fashion industry norms. Picture ski pants with striking pink accents, crafted from repurposed treasures like a yellow raincoat, and plans for a jacket that speaks volumes in leopard-butterfly print. It's a celebration of sustainability and personal empowerment, proving that the joy of creation is often found in the details of what we make for ourselves.

In this episode, I discuss the importance of goal setting for creative entrepreneurship. Drawing parallels between goal setting and preparing soil for a garden, I emphasize the need for alignment with personal values and decision-making to drive business success.
I introduce a step-by-step approach to goal setting, starting with personal goals before transitioning to business goals. Practical exercises and worksheets are provided to encourage entrepreneurs to integrate personal and business values into their goals for greater clarity and effectiveness.
Highlighting models like SMART, GROW, and WWHW, I emphasize specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and timeliness in goal setting. Through examples across various business aspects, I demonstrate how goals can be tailored to individual needs and values.

I wanted to do an episode about Etsy and if it is worth starting your own website, when I went to Threads to do a callout for craft business that have ideas about this, I saw a post by a printmaker. This post inspired my episode. Sometimes you don't know where to start and the business roadmap is completely unclear. I hope that I can make it a bit more simple with this basic roadmap.
I was moved and frustrated by the ever-returning struggles of small creative businesses. So in this episode, I'll guide you through the fundamental steps of building your own business in a simple and straightforward manner. While these steps may seem basic, they provide a solid foundation for anyone embarking on their entrepreneurial journey. My aim is to boost your confidence and highlight areas where you may need further education or information.

In this episode, I'll be taking you through my three-step process to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the upcoming one. We'll delve into both personal and business aspects, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach.
I'll be sharing insights into my use of the Year Compass, a practical tool guiding a deep dive into significant events and creating a compass for the new year. We'll then explore my daily practice as a bullet journalist, unraveling the mindfulness practice cleverly disguised as a productivity system, emphasizing the power of reflection and intention-setting.
As a bonus, I'm excited to announce my certification as a bullet journalist and share details about upcoming workshops.
To wrap things up, we'll discuss potential ways to support the podcast's growth and evolution. I've always been an early adopter and early let-go-er, which means I like to try things. I've tried Patreon but felt like I had to run another community while I already run the Ja, Wol Community.
Now that podcast subscriptions are new on the scene, I'm trying these two

Returning to Instagram after a two-year hiatus was no easy task. Let me, Saskia de Feijter, guide you through my journey of finding my social media footing again, and how I managed to balance business goals with personal values. I'll share my reasons for initially disconnecting and the enlightening course that sparked my decision to experiment with Instagram again.
Ever thought about approaching marketing with minimalism? That's exactly what we'll explore in the second segment. By aligning marketing strategies with personal values and making mindful decisions about social media consumption, I've been able to achieve a minimalist presence on Instagram. I'll share my secrets, the tools I use like Otter, and hopefully inspire you to consider alternative ways to market your business and reclaim control of your social media use.
The final segment delves into the art of crafting an effective Instagram strategy that aligns with your values and goals. We'll discuss creating a visually appealing and informative Instagram grid, achieving a brand presence, and balancing the pros and cons of the platform. For those eager to learn more, I'll share details about a helpful workshop and mailing list. The key takeaway here is the importance of making conscious choices and staying connected in a way that's right for you. Join me as we navigate the Instagram landscape together.

What if marketing wasn't about pushing sales, but about engaging and empowering your audience? Ponder that as you join Simon Batchelor and myself on this riveting journey down the road less taken in marketing strategies. Together, we'll uncover the secrets of ethical and effective marketing, painting a picture of a world where marketing is not only authentic and fun but also resonates deeply with the audience, encouraging them to become active participants in the buying process.
Our conversation covers a spectacular range of topics, from the power of customer-centric marketing to the challenges and realities of social media marketing. We'll challenge the traditional goal-focused marketing perspectives, introducing the concept of viewing marketing from the client's eyes. Simon and I dig deep into brand portrayal, content creation, and the game of numbers that is social media. We'll guide you on how to navigate this minefield, highlighting the importance of genuine engagement and community building over simply growing your follower count.
In the latter half, we shift focus to the power of email marketing, discussing how this often-overlooked strategy can provide a more direct and personal link to your audience compared to social media. We'll also delve into the intriguing concepts of the 'helping others industry' and the 'kindness economy', exploring how these relate to ethical marke

"In my daily life, I play numerous roles, including that of a mom, spouse, entrepreneur, friend, student, teacher, and patient. Each of these personas demands specific attention and care. Without a clear plan of action, I would often feel overwhelmed, struggling to prioritize tasks effectively.
I vividly recall a time when my daily routine left me feeling drained and unexcited about my business. I would open my shop, feeling weighed down and directionless. I took on tasks as they came, without a strategic plan, resulting in stagnation. Despite having knowledge and ideas about what I should be doing to grow my business, exhaustion and lack of direction held me back."
This excerpt touches on the challenges of balancing multiple roles and the impact of not having a clear plan in both personal and business life. It sets the stage for the importance of personal intentions in achieving clarity and focus.

The big question on this episode is; How do we bend time our way? Can we make more of it so we can get out of overwhelm and stress. I’ve invited my friend and coach Kim Witten because she’s the perfect partner for a hilarious but insightful journey through linguistics and philosophy. Which are all fancy words for we have a lot of fun figuring out an the issue of never having enough time and how to deal with it.
In this episode Kim and I give you a three step process for getting out of the thick of it. So you can reach out of the overwhelm storm and grabbing onto something practical and steady.
By managing energy and being intentional about how we use our time. We discuss the importance of pausing, assessing, and setting rituals to get into the mindset of bending time to our needs.
I share how I optimised my day by discovering my natural circadian rhythm and finding what energises me. Kim emphasises the importance of managing energy over time and gives examples of how she rearranged her day to align with her energetic peak.
We do metaphors like no other but they all lead to pretty solid insights. So hang on for a fun ride.
"If we manage our energy, the time part just takes care of itself." - Kim Witten

Are you taking yourself seriously as a business owner, do you set boundaries, are you being professional,
It’s time to start owning the tasks that come with running your business, to stop feeling icky around business terms and accepting what you need to know about your needs and applying business strategies in order to balance and grow your personal and business life.
How business-y do you need to be?
In this episode, I'm talking to designer, maker, and teacher Cal Patch who's specialising in drafting your own patterns. Cal shares her journey from teaching for free to becoming an entrepreneur and how she still really doesn't use business terms, although she really IS an entrepreneur.

As you might have heard in the last episode I did with my friend Zoe Edwards, A Smaller Life is evolving into a podcast that is similar but a bit different. I was always talking to and with crafters and business owners in the field, from now on I will focus more on providing business owners in the needlecraft industry with practical business insights and actionable tips to help you get out of the pull of the day-to-day swamp.
It will however still be interesting for crafters to see behind the curtains of businesses like yours. And I'm hoping that both crafters and business owners will send me voice messages ☞ and emails with their ideas and questions. So I can make my episodes even more to the point and helpful.

In this episode we’re flipping things around. Kathleen Kettles, one of the most enthusiastic members of the Ja, Wol community and a podcaster herself is interviewing me.
Her podcast ‘In conversation with Kathleen’ is all about how her guests define success. I was invited and I loved the atmosphere of this conversation so much that I wanted to share it with you as well.
The main topic is my motto, “Progress over Perfection”, and we'll be discussing the importance of embracing imperfection and focusing on progress rather than perfection.
It's easy to get caught up in striving for the perfect everything in all areas of our life, But it can it can lead to anxiety, self-doubt, and inaction. We'll be exploring ways to take action towards our goals, even if it means making mistakes along the way. We'll discuss the value of surrounding ourselves with a supportive community, celebrating our accomplishments, and being proud of how far we've come, even if the journey was difficult.
Additionally, we'll dive into the impact that we can have on others by sharing our knowledge and experiences and being open to learning from them as well.
I get a little bit more personal in this one, so I hope you like that. Grab your yarn, your needles or your dog or your laundry or whatever you wanna do, and enjoy our talk.

My coach, Kim Witten, teaches us the difference between coaching, mentoring and therapy. Then, we move on to topics such as the struggle we creatives have balancing structure and freedom (for our craft), and also have an enlightening conversation about “imposter syndrome”. Kim shares a comforting perspective and cites the two psychologists who coined the term in the 1970’s.
Enjoy this incredible conversation with Kim Witten, transformational coach, for the first episode of A Smaller Life in the new year.

Before The Holland Wool Collective came along, tons of wool was going to waste. There was a gap between people who had wool, people who processed it into a usable product, and wholesalers or designers who needed the material.
Farmers in the Netherlands needed more options as far as who to send their wool to; there wasn’t anyone gathering that material to send it to be processed it into usable medium– like felt or yarn. At least, not until Janne de Hoop and her partner Mirthe Snoek came along.
Within a week of launching their website, they had received at least 30 calls from sheep farmers with wool to get rid of. Still in the early stages, Janne from the Hollands Wol Colletief gives us a sneak-peek into what goes on behind the scenes in this start-up cooperative that utilizes what, in the past, was going to waste. What a joy to have her with us!
We talk about taxes, balancing work life and personal life, launching a company with a friend, and figuring things out as you go.

Alice owns a branding firm, and she runs an online community (with the help of dedicated others) that's focused on ethical branding / marketing.
How do we attract customers without using lead magnets?
How can we appeal to our customers without manipulating them?

If we don't use the typical selling strategies, what are strategies that work, that work more, let’s say cyclically or in

In this episode I talk about the role of strategy in your small business and how you don't have to change all that much to make better use of the time and effort you are already investing in communication, marketing, branding and all those other 'icky' business words.
Hopefully you'll get some information about how thinking things through just a little bit more, can make a big difference in how you present yourself as a business.

The Dutch social media platform I was struggling to find the name of is (or was) Hyves.
The ad-free and safe community platform I use for my business and for the people that live on our block is Mighty Networks (affiliate link; if you end up using this link, I get a thank you from MN)

This is a fun one. Sharing facts, fun tit bits, percentages and numbers about YOU the listener and me te host. And giving you a wonderful collage of the best quotes of the season.
This made me choke up. Seriously. I'm proud of making this show with the help of Ali and you, the listener. I have to be messy and leave the old perfectionist in me behind or I'll never do it. Episode after episode I overcome fears and grow. While I make mistakes, lots of them. But it's ok. No one is perfect and we don't need to be.
I love making this podcast and hanging out with those amazing guests so I can share their stories with you.
You can quote me on that one!!

In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller.
This episode I'm giving you Half Way There insight on the Me Made May Pledge I took. Letting you know what's going on, if I'm any good at keeping the pledge. If I have learned something so far? Do I have regrets?
"I SASKIA, PLEDGE TO WEAR ONLY HANDMADE CLOTHES (by me or someone else) AND A FEW ITEMS FROM SUSTAINABLE BRANDS THAT ARE GOOD TO MAN, ANIMAL & EARTH."
And as we are approaching the half way point of 2022, I look back at what I've been up to so far in my business after the great pivot of 2021. Letting you in on all the goings on.
Wanna hang out and do some looking back and looking forward?
Thanks for listening, I really appreciate you choosing to spend your time with me and my guests!

'Hart op de tong' is a series of talks in Dutch. When you see this title or this picture, you'll know that it's a Dutch Episode.
GENOEMD IN ONS GESPREK:
'Digital Minimalism' - Cal Newport
'Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now' - Jaron Lanier (personal note: the book is good, this man knows things, but his website is horrid... as a branding expert, this is going to haunt me. Is it intentional? Does he not care? Are people not taking him seriously because of that horrible website? Does he not care...? Anyway. end of my note)
'the Social Dilemma' documentary
Een van mijn Kindness Economy bijbels over branding (wat niet hetzelfde is als marketing, maar in ons gesprek moest ik even een punt maken...'):

In this solo episode I share my 4 Fundamental Steps For Starting Small Businesses.
Last week, in a very energetic mood, I asked my mailing list subscribers "What can I do for you right now? How can I help? And I was bracing myself for a whole week of full service and connecting. Being generous as a business is important and it can really help you to figure out what people need.
I did get a number responses but not enough to keep me occupied for a whole week. So I decided to answer the most asked question in this episode of the podcast and make good use of what I just learned.
"What steps do I take first when I want to start my small business?"
I know what it feels like when you are a (starting) solo-preneur. So much uncertainty. So many questions. It can get pretty scary and it makes you stop in your tracks. While your mind is in overdrive, you are not moving forward.
After 16 years of running a small business and starting dozens of side hustles, I know a thing or two of what is truly important and what fluff you can leave to the side. Because we don't have time for crap shizzle. Am I right?
In line with the generous and energetic mood I was in, I've also made a free download for all of you who are curious or want to start their small business soon.

In this episode, you’ll hear from Solveig Petch aka Petchy a brand strategist and identity designer. Amongst other things we cover that money isn't dirty, that female (identifying) business owners tent to want to work from a caring position sometimes forgetting the selling and money bits. We talk about stealing original ideas and having a generous outlook on things. Making money as a purpose driven brand and sustaining our own lives and having some money left to do good in the world.
This episode is particularly interesting for creative small business owners but if you are a crafter by hobby or passion, this will give you some insights in the 'behind the scenes' of some of your favorite yarn and fabric shops and what things they deal with to offer you their amazing products.

A Smaller Life is a bi-lingual podcast. This episode is in Dutch. If you are a (native) English speaker and want to talk about your journey in crafting your own conscious wardrobe, let me know; I'd be happy to talk to you so we can share a similar interview with our English speaking audience!

In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller.
In this episode, you’ll hear from ME! As I messed up my planning I had to go out of my comfort zone and record a solo show. I didn't want to just be babbling so I decided I'd give you something very valuable; 10 Tips to Make Time to Make, because I know all of us makers AND sellers can really use more time to make!!

'Hart op de tong' is a series of talks in Dutch. When you see this title or this picture, you'll know that it's a Dutch Episode.

In this episode, you’ll hear from le Grande Dame of Wool, Clara Parkes.
Clare is a New Your Times bestselling author, speaker and wool advocate.
Oh m'gosh I had so much fun talking to Clara Parkes, our first conversation 'in sound' was awesome. Le Grand Dame of Wool has a way of talking about serious issues in such a fun way. This talk was recorded and shared with the Ja, Wol community in the late summer of 2021 but I'm so happy to share it with all of you now. We talk about trade offs, compromises we make as conscious knitters, how the industry is build and how we can keep it going and our heart's work; eating chips on you tube.
If you are interested in serious information, packed in a bunch of laughter, this is your episode. It was wonderful to expand our Insta DM relationship to a visible and audible conversation.
I hope you'll love it as much as I did.
Enjoy!

In this episode I welcome Floor, Tama en Maaike who have been active founding members of the Conscious Knitting Club.
We talk about what made them decide to join, how the club is structured, what the value has been to them and how much time they invest.
This interview was such a great experience for me because these women really proved to me that what I had envisioned for the club has become a reality. Connecting to other knitters and getting to a deeper level of consciousness about what and why and how we knit.
I hope you'll enjoy this episode and if you want to become a member of the club, we'd love to have you, just go HERE and scroll down to see the special membership plans.

In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller.
In this episode I welcome knitwear designer, teacher and Fair Isle expert Mary Jane Mucklestone.
Mary Jane and myself have briefly met on several occasions when I travelled to Shetland for Shetland Wool Festival, a festival to celebrate the heritage of Shetland Wool and knitting. I was excited to really get some time to talk to her about exactly that, traveling for work, designing and teaching techniques like Fair Isle knitting and what it means to be a a non- Shetlander that is known for this specific technique. Inclusivity in knitting and our excitement to discover, research and then share what we've learned. Listen to a very lovely and knowledgeable, talented knitter that has a lot to share on stranded knitting and Fair Isle knitting in particular.
At Ja, Wol we loved her patterns, we actually did two Knit a Longs (KALs) with her patterns and had so much fun with it.

In this episode, I welcome Monique Boonstra, a very talented lace knitter and designer and general lovely person. She explains that her skills are part talent and part hard work and many hours of practice. She shares her practice with us and offers over an hour of insights and inspiration to knitters and (starting) business owners in the knitting industry.
If you have questions about how to calculate prices for your knitting and where to find customers that will pay the right price, Monique Boonstra gives us a masterclass in how she calculates the prices for her very intricate lace knitted shawls. Spoiler; she doesn't have an hourly rate but figured out a way to get a fair price and still she gets customers that order multiple (!!) shawls from her.
With this podcast I want to take you with me on my journey to discover the answers to these questions: What do we buy, Where do we buy, Who do we buy from… Or don’t we buy at all but use what we already have? And how relevant is my job as a yarn shop owner selling people stuff when we already have more than we need? How can I make my life as an entrepreneur a

Want to know in what ways acid dyeing is better for the environment than natural dyeing? Don't miss this episode of A Smaller Life!
In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller.
In this episode, I welcome Saskia Maas (@ovisetcetera), an indie yarn dyer focussing on colour and the origin of fibers. Saskia makes it her business to make very conscious decisions about where her yarn comes from and what processes she uses so the impact on the environment is minimal and the effects are maximal.
Saskia and myself share more than a first name, we share a lot of values a great friendship and some fun memories. Listen in on our conversation to learn more about Saskia's inspirations and her process.
ps did you know she owns a bunch of horses and knows a lot about plants?

In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller.
In this episode, I welcome Jonna van 't Hof, she's a legal and business advisor at BBK (Beroepsvereniging van Beeldend Kunstenaars - Professional Association of Visual Artists).
Jonna reacted on my Instagram stories about fair wages and prices for your work as a professional knitter. She was so specific about it that I needed to know more,I contacted her and as it turns out she's a professional in the field. It took me 2 seconds to invite her to be my guest on the podcast and l'm so glad she obliged.
Jonna advises visual artists on legal and business matters and knits in her spare time.
We had such an in-depth discussion about fair wages for self employed creatives. And fair and sustainable prices for handmade items. When do you call yourself a professional artist or crafter, is there a difference. How do you move from creating for fun to becoming a professional and what steps do you need to take.
What I loved about this conversation is that it's all in your hands. It's a mindset if nothing else. Some of the best artists are self educated.
"When you think it, if you have the right mindset, you can become it"

In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller.
In this Dutch solo episode, I am saying goodbye to my shop. I'll explain why I decided to close it down and what I learned from this bend in my journey as an entrepreneur in the knitting industry. I remember the good and the bad and I'm extremely honest answering questions from my community. To be honest, it's a bit scary to open up this much. But I have things to say and information to share which I hope will give you some insight and inspiration.
My podcast is bilingual all episodes marked with a yellow background are Dutch (think of cheese). Most are English (blueish background think of 'overseas')

In this episode, you’ll hear from Bregje @studiospintol, Bregje is a woodworker that started making spindles before she could spin. I know right?! Thing is, she's kicking serious woodworking ass and she's doing it right in her friggin living room. Seriously!! How committed do you have to be to be ok with wood chips in the fringe of your lampshades? We talk about the process of making the Ja, Wol solid wood sock blockers and about our decision to up the price. It's a very insightful and honest talk. I'd check it out if I were you!

With this podcast I want to take you with me on my journey to discover the answers to these questions: What do we buy, Where do we buy, Who do we buy from… Or don’t we buy at all but use what we already have? And how relevant is my job as a yarn shop owner selling people stuff when we already have more than we need? How can I make my life as an entrepreneur and textile crafter smaller and more relevant to these times?
Have a question? Want to leave a message? Want to read the transcriptions? Want to know more...

Get 50% off the Business Circle Program this Summer. No live video, no 1:1 sessions and you have to do 4 hours of work each week to see results. If you are willing to put in the work, you get the BCP and a guest pass to the community for only €600,- instead of €1200,-.
This is a very generous offer if I do say so myself and it's not based on scare tactics but a way for me to find out if an evergreen course would work. An experiment. This might be your last chance! www.patternshift.fm
