Roshi Joan Halifax, Ph.D. is a Buddhist teacher, Founder and Head Teacher of Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a social activist, and author, and in her early years an anthropologist. She is a pioneer in the field of end-of-life care and has lectured on death and dying at many academic institutions and medical centers around the world. She has received many awards and honors for her work as a social and environmental activist and in the end-of-life care field. Venerable Dr. Yifa, PhD is a Taiwanese Buddhist nun, scholar, and writer. Ordained in 1979, She holds a law degree from the Taiwan National University, a Master's in Comparative Philosophy from the University of Hawaii and a doctorate in religious studies from Yale University. She has been the Dean at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist seminary and served as a department head and Dean of the University of the West in Los Angeles. Her main area of research is Buddhist monasticism and she is the author and co-author of multiple books, including The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes. Joy Har­jo, the 23rd Poet Lau­re­ate of the Unit­ed States, is a mem­ber of the  Muscogee Nation. Har­jo began writ­ing poet­ry as a mem­ber of the Uni­ver­si­ty of New Mexico’s Native stu­dent orga­ni­za­tion, the Kiva Club, in response to Native empow­er­ment move­ments. 

Har­jo is the author of ten books of award-winning poet­ry, three children’s books, and sev­er­al screen­plays and col­lec­tions of prose inter­views. Har­jo per­forms with her sax­o­phone and flutes, solo and with her band, the Arrow Dynam­ics Band, and pre­vi­ous­ly with Joy Har­jo and Poet­ic Jus­tice. In addi­tion to serv­ing as a three-term U.S. Poet Lau­re­ate, Har­jo is a chan­cel­lor of the Acad­e­my of Amer­i­can Poets and is a found­ing board mem­ber and Chair of the Native Arts and Cul­tures Foun­da­tion. She has recently been induct­ed into the Amer­i­can Acad­e­my of Arts and Let­ters, the Amer­i­can Philo­soph­i­cal Soci­ety, the Nation­al Native Amer­i­can Hall of Fame, and the Nation­al Woman’s Hall of Fame. Thomas Hübl further expands on Attunement– a relational mindfulness practice that allows our nervous systems to feel one another and transmit many layers of information. According to filmmaker and founder of the Identity Development Institute, Stephen Gyllenhaal, “The best instrument in the world is another human being.” In this episode, he and Thomas discuss the importance of resonance to trauma healing. Similar to attunement, resonance involves communication between nervous systems wherein our bodies transmit our pain to others within a safe and open environment.

Thomas Hübl explores the concepts of Inner and Outer Coherence and the role they play in relationships and communication. He describes inner coherence as the capacity to understand our own inner experience, resonate with others, and feel whole. It’s a function of our nervous system that combines external sensory information with our internal thoughts and emotions. 

He explains that inner coherence leads to outer coherence- it creates a space for us to be present, empathetic, and share openly with others. Dr. Ruby Gibson; author, cultural healer and advocate, and the developer of Somatic Archaeology© joins Thomas for a second conversation. Thomas interviews world-renowned trauma expert and the author of “The Body Keeps the Score,” Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. They discuss different approaches to healing trauma on individual and societal levels. Dr. Van der Kolk emphasizes the need for physical and relational safety in order to process trauma, and the difficulty of healing in environments that tend towards disembodiment.

He explains that trauma causes us to become numb, withdrawn, and full of shame, and that we experience these sensations physically.

Bessel van der Kolk, MD is a psychiatrist, author, researcher, and educator based in Boston, United States. Since the 1970s, his research has been in the area of post-traumatic stress. He is the author of The New York Times best-seller, The Body Keeps the Score. Van der Kolk formerly served as president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and is a former co-director of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. He is a professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine and president of the Trauma Research Foundation in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Thomas Hübl explores how trauma changes our experience of time, and how integration and acceptance can help us create a better future. When traumatic events occur in the present moment, we become overwhelmed, and our experience of "presence" is split, pushing the trauma into the subconscious realm. 

He explains that our compartmentalized trauma is like a data package that becomes stuck in the past, interrupting the flow of time like a rock in a river. As we go through life, we experience tension, numbness, and absence-- repetitive difficulties influenced by the trauma embedded in our past. Thomas provides insight into how we can embrace and integrate our pain and our defense mechanisms, and how that is a more healing and effective way to create change than trying to get rid of them.

sujatha baliga’s work is characterized by an equal dedication to people who’ve experienced and caused harm and violence. A former victim advocate and public defender, sujatha is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences about her decades of restorative justice work. She also speaks publicly and inside prisons about her own experiences as a survivor of child sexual abuse and her path to forgiveness. Her personal and research interests include the forgiveness of seemingly unforgivable acts, survivor-led movements, restorative justice’s potential impact on racial disparities in our legal systems, and Buddhist approaches to conflict transformation. She’s a member of the Gyuto Foundation in Richmond, CA, where she leads meditation on Monday nights. She was named a 2019 MacArthur Fellow.

Throughout the centuries, humans continue to be stuck in the same pattern of humiliation. And it has become even more significant in the present.

William Ury is one of the world’s leading experts on negotiation and mediation. As the co-founder of the Program on Negotiation, he is a driving force behind many new negotiation theories and practices. Dr. Stephen Porges points out that our bodies have their own ways of signaling to us that there’s something wrong. It's important to pay attention to our bodies and acknowledge what they're trying to teach us.

✔️ Our patterns of protection are shaped throughout our life.

Due to trauma and constant exposure to painful situations, we have developed patterns of protection that we immediately employ when we sense even the slightest dangers. Getting stuck in this constant cycle of shielding oneself inhibits one from enjoying life.

✔️ Recognize your body’s signs of a warning and a welcome.

Dr. Stephen Porges and Deb Dana share ideas about how to remain in a state of regulation and how to differentiate a 'warning' from a 'welcome' sign. People have been programmed to mobilize, complete tasks, and maximize productivity in the modern world - without considering their mental and physiological state. This constant inhibition of bodily cues disconnects us from our physical form.

When an individual becomes ill, the Lakota tradition teaches that the community extends gratefulness and that sickness manifests to uncover shared dysfunction. This gives way to the belief that "Your healing is our healing."

Dr. Maté emphasizes the traditional wisdom that works with interdependent medicine is just as applicable to our modern world as it was in ancient times. Yet, sadly, medical practice often fails to acknowledge the science that confirms this.

"The single biggest block to getting a yes in any kind of conflict is yourself,” says author and expert negotiator William Ury.

In this episode, William Ury shares his expertise in demonstrating spaciousness and empathy in conflict-laden situations, mediation as an intrapersonal exercise, and dissecting trauma in an unsettled society.

▶️ Practicing Spaciousness and Empathy for Conflict Mediation with William Ury

Key Points to Discover: 

✔️ Practice the palm pinching technique. Standing in the middle of conflict can be terrifying. Step back and find perspective within by pinching your palm. “It gives you momentary pain, but it’ll keep you alert,” William Ury retells.

✔️Befriend your emotions. Trauma brings about emotions we perceive as negative – such as anger, resentment, jealousy, hatred, and fear.

William Ury says, “Befriend these emotions. Welcome them. Don’t judge them. Host them. Don’t suppress them.” Every emotion contains a message. If we’re open and paying attention, we can better understand it.

✔️ Conflicts have three sides. The third side is called the whole – the larger community to which the two parties belong. “It’s not a conflict between individual A and individual B. It’s a collective,” he explains. This unseen side holds a huge responsibility to mediate and gather the two parties to reach a resolution.

✔️ Empathy requires putting yourself in your own shoes. It’s hard to put yourself in others’ shoes when you have preconceived ideas about them.

Be in a place of clarity and gather as much information as you can about the conflicts you witness. This is where real and deep empathy begins.

✔️ The absent parts of ourselves are filled with the past. When we aren’t fully integrated with the painful experiences of others, it blocks us from developing genuine empathy, and we might instead find that we’re filled with fear, physical tension, and numbness. Healing from intergenerational trauma requires us to feel the fears of our ancestors – merging them into our present flow. This allows us to cultivate greater empathy for the people in our lives.

✔️ Mediation means seeing a way forward. Finding the way forward in conflict calls for inner spaciousness. As a mediator, William Ury recommends taking a step back and viewing the situation from what he calls “going to the balcony” - a removed position from which we can be more present, empathetic, and objective. Take off the blinders of your own biases and see the larger picture.

What are legacy burdens?

These are ingrained parts of us that involve extreme beliefs and emotions coming from traumatic experiences inherited from family or other people.

This is mostly experienced by people in marginalized groups. And unpacking them takes courage, acknowledgment, and a safe space to open up.

Listen as Dr. Richard Schwartz and Deran Young share their expertise and experiences in navigating through intergenerational trauma and un-learning past beliefs.

Key Points To Discover:

✔️ Your trauma isn’t your identity. When your pained inner child starts to hijack your emotions, it’s important to separate it and allow your higher self to take over. “That one part of us doesn’t have to dominate our life,” Deran Young says.

✔️Foster a culture of healing in shared spaces. While some are far in their journey of inner work, others still need an extra boost.  What are the rules in the communal space? How do we respect each other? How do we honor our differences and similarities? It’s important for all to feel a sense of comfort and belonging when it’s time to unpack trauma.

✔️ Identify your “exiles”.  These vulnerable parts greatly impacted by trauma are called “exiles” – our spaces for creativity and desire that were hurt and are pushed away. This makes us feel like we’ve moved on. But in reality, these “exiles” still have an underground influence over our decisions and overall worldview.

✔️ The best healing happens in collective spaces. It’s normal to feel alone when grappling with deep trauma. This is why Deran Young recommends looking for groups where you can share your experience and feel a sense of community. This is where people can start to acknowledge their trauma and speak more compassionately to themselves.

✔️ Everyone deserves access to healing. Economically marginalized places may not have access to the tools needed to treat inner wounds. Forms of psychedelic-assisted therapy – trauma healing using natural resources from the land – have existed for generations. Each person in the world has the right to utilize it for their improvement.

✔️Bring your exiled parts back home and reconnect. Dr. Richard Schwartz emphasizes that we shouldn’t disconnect these traumatized parts of ourselves, but rather recognize and acknowledge their presence for healing to take place.

Dr. Richard Schwartz began his career as a systemic family therapist and an academic. Grounded in systems thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in response to clients’ descriptions of various parts within themselves. He focused on the relationships among these parts and noticed that there were systemic patterns to the way they were organized across clients. He also found that when the clients’ parts felt safe and were allowed to relax, the clients would spontaneously experience the qualities of confidence, openness, and compassion that Dr. Schwartz came to call the Self. He found that when in that state of Self, clients would know how to heal their parts.

A featured speaker for national professional organizations, Dr. Schwartz has published many books and over fifty articles about IFS.
