Are Welfare and Performance Mutually Exclusive in Equestrian Sport?
This week, we’re bringing you something significant - a recorded presentation by Dr. David Marlin from March 2023, all about SLO—Social Licence to Operate.
This presentation predates some of the major welfare controversies that have recently hit the headlines: the military horses galloping through London, the Blue Tongue outcry, and the shockwaves caused by a dressage rider’s training video.
David has been at the forefront of the SLO conversation for years, and we believe now is the perfect time to revisit this critical topic. His presentation reminds us what’s truly at stake—the trust and acceptance that allow us to keep enjoying our horses, our sports, and our industry. If we don’t take Social Licence seriously, we risk losing it all—for our hobby, our profession, and for the horses we care about so deeply.
David’s presentation is titled - Are Welfare and Performance Mutually Exclusive in Equestrian Sport?
You can watch the full presentation on YouTube or on the AskAnimalweb.com website, but for now, enjoy this powerful audio recording. Feel free to comment on our social platforms or email us. Thank you for tuning in!

Dr David Marlin took the opportunity to catch up with his old friend and colleague, farrier Ben Benson, at the annual Acpat seminar at Leamington Spa in October 2024.
Ben Benson AWCF Farrier presented at the conference 'The Farrier's role in influencing equine posture and injury prevention'.
They discuss the role of the farrier and how they can work with other professionals to determine the best course of action for any horse - given their unique perspective. How can a horse owner/rider get all these experts working together.
Why is the farrier industry in decline, and what are the problems, causes and concerns for the industry? And what are the price differences between shoeing a horse in the UK and abroad? Farriers are being forced to shoe high numbers in the UK, and this is having a detrimental effect on their bodies, and they are struggling to make ends meet.
They even discuss barefoot and why this topic is so divisive, and really it should be about welfare and what is best for the horse at that point in their life given; breed, age, condition, care, sport and whether it actually benefits them or not!
You'll be able to watch the interview video here on Animalweb or listen to the podcast.

Dr David Marlin Interviews Charlotte Hodgetts of Myerscough College about her latest Research into Cooling Horses.
David chats with Charlotte about how her equine science career started and what led her to research cooling horses.
Charlotte's work and abstract can be found on the Animalweb website here.
To understand more, here is the Introduction:
Introduction: Strenuous exercise like British Eventing (BE) cross-country competition can increase equine core body temperatures to critical levels, particularly in hot/humid conditions without suitable acclimatisation (Marlin et al., 1996). Heat stroke is a welfare concern, particularly with increasing occurrences of UK heatwaves due to global warming (Kendon et al., 2021). Cooling practices have been investigated for international competition horses working maximally (Marlin et al., 2018), but not specifically the practices used in industry by riders at grassroots level. The aim was to investigate cooling practices used after cross-country phases at BE affiliated grassroots and international-level competition.

🐴 Can Horses Experience "Flow" During Training? 🤔
Ever wondered if we could make rehab and training more enjoyable for our equine partners?
Research by Hintze & Yee (2022) asks: "Can we provide animals with the same access to a sense of enjoyment that we as humans value so much?"
🔑 Key Points:
Dr Giliian Tabor has been diving into human psychological theories of motivation, particularly Self-determination theory by Ryan and Deci. It's fascinating to consider how these concepts might apply to our horses!
What are your thoughts? Can we make training more intrinsically rewarding for horses?

Dr Gillian Tabor chats with Diane Howard, lead author of a research study developing a pain scoring system for owners to use for horses with osteoarthritis. The article and the scoring system – the Equine Brief Pain Inventory (EBPI) – is openly available for anyone to access and use. Diane and her team used a reliable methodology to design a questionnaire to help owners assess the posture, facial expression, movement and behaviour of their horse. The resulting tool is undergoing further reliability testing in a larger population of owners/caretakers of arthritic and healthy horses before it can be introduced in practice. Your horse has been diagnosed with kissing spines - what next?
Firstly, don't panic or ask advice from the internet, which will definitely add to the confusion!
Gillian talks about why sharing X-rays on social media are unlikely to help and some things you need to consider before committing to the veterinary intervention. Working on pre-hab and planning post-intervention management and individual care are discussed, which are critical to a successful outcome.

Dr Gillian Tabor chats with Jo Paul, Chartered Physiotherapist and President of The Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP). RAMP is a voluntary register of professionals who have signed up to take responsibility for attaining and maintaining gold standards of practice in animal musculoskeletal treatment. Professionals trained in Chiropractic, Osteopathic and Physiotherapy techniques are regarded by RAMP as one occupation - i.e. animal musculoskeletal practitioners. The register is designed to help veterinary surgeons and animal owners choose competent professionals who provide chiropractic, osteopathic, and physiotherapy techniques for the treatment of their animals.
Gillian and Jo discuss RAMPs history, and the value of the three professions working together, to raise and maintain animal welfare and support veterinary referrals and animal owners choosing their MSK practitioner. They also talk about the education and courses that gain or work towards RAMP registration. Gillian finishes by asking Jo about the future of RAMP and the profession.

Recognising pain in the ridden horse – use of the ridden horse pain ethogram (RHpE) with Sue Palmer (interviewed by Dr Gillian Tabor)
“All too often, pain in ridden horses is labelled as ‘bad’ behaviour. The apparently ‘sound’ horse is ‘naughty’, ‘lazy’, ‘difficult’, ‘explosive’, ‘spooky’, ‘nappy’, and more. These labels are wrong. Pain impacts all aspects of a horse’s performance, including its partnership with the rider, and its potential to progress. It does not always create lameness. Relieving pain can lead to improved performance, a deeper partnership, and greater potential.”
Sue and Gillian discuss the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE), developed by Dr Sue Dyson and colleagues. The RHpE is a checklist of 24 behaviours to check for musculoskeletal pain in the ridden horse. Horses can only demonstrate pain through their behaviour and performance. Only through first recognising pain can we then address it through accurate assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Sue Palmer and Dr Sue Dyson have recently published ‘Harmonious Horsemanship: Use of the Ridden Horse Ethogram to Optimise Potential, Partnership and Performance’.
Sue Palmer has worked in the equestrian industry for over 25 years, is an ACPAT and RAMP registered Chartered Physiotherapist, and based in Staffordshire, UK

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for horses, much like it is for humans and other animals. Vitamin E cannot be made and must be obtained from the diet. It plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including immune system support, muscle function, and the elimination of free radicals that can damage cells and tissue. Horses that have access to fresh, green pasture typically get an adequate amount of Vitamin E from their diet. However, those that are kept in stables/stalls or fed on a diet consisting mainly of hay might require supplementation.
Dr David Marlin explains the extensive importance of Vitamin E, with a discussion around:

Helen from the Dr David Marlin team interviews Dr Heather Cameron-Whytock - Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Central Lancashire and researcher into THREE of eventings key horse safety studies.
With colleagues, Heather has conducted three significant studies into Horse falls at events. Heather’s 2023 study on horse falls in British Eventing competition was the largest scientific study ever published, and her previous research with FEI data has led to significant safety discussions about fence types and their order during a cross-country course and a closer subjective look at what constitutes a risk factor.
Equestrian eventing is a dangerous Olympic sport, with 16 rider and 69 horse fatalities at competition in the last 10 years. Despite this, there is limited research that aims to improve safety within the sport.

At this time of year, many people are starting to use studs if they are eventing, show jumping on grass or concerned about their horse slipping in grass arenas etc. It is an often contested subject with lots of opinions and anecdotes, but sadly very little research. In this podcast, Dr Gillian Tabor will review one research article about using screw-in studs.
The Dr David Marlin Team are currently running a survey - Use of Screw-in Studs for Competition Horses – What do you think?
In this short survey, we are interested in understanding how and when studs are used. Finding out how stud holes are maintained, the perceived benefits of using studs and if there are any concerns relating to horse injury.
This anonymous survey consists of 14 questions, should take no more than 4 minutes to complete. The results will be shared on our website DrDavidMarlin.com and on our social media pages free for all to see.

John Moore is a renowned equine development professional in America. Some may call John a horse behaviourist, although he does not like the title… he prefers to think of himself as providing equine educational opportunities for humans to understand what our horses are thinking, feeling, and why.
Dr David Marlin has asked John to share a few of his thoughts and learnings about horse behaviour with us.
The interview was conducted over Zoom as John is based in Montana in the USA.
In the coming months, we hope to have John on to discuss various aspects of how horse behaviour is important to how we keep and care for our horses. We hope to cover topics including; when science meets behaviour, demographic differences, horses are ever naughty, spotting a horse's reaction to pain and other interesting subjects.
If you have any questions for John or ideas for topics you would like him to cover then please let us know in the Members' Facebook Group or by email - [email protected]

In this episode, Dr David Marlin looks closer at Sugar and Starch - Are they always bad for horses?
Sugar and starch are everywhere in our horse’s diets. Even grass can be a source of sugar and starch. And in fact, our horses might struggle on a ZERO sugar and ZERO starch diet, which is good news because it would be impossible to achieve. And part of the sugar and starch problem is how it’s fed. So a horse eating grass or hay with a moderate sugar or starch content over the course of several hours will cope better from a metabolic perspective than if the same volume of sugar and starch were given in one go in a hard feed that could be eaten in 10 minutes!
Dr David Marlin has delved into great detail on this subject, and to read and learn more on this, please check out the extensive article on the website here >>> https://drdavidmarlin.com/sugar-and-starch-good-or-bad/

Gillian discusses the effects of a technique commonly applied to horses to lift and round their backs. This movement is often used as part of therapy treatments and prescribed to owners to repeat with their horses on a regular basis. Whilst it is possible to see the ‘lift’ and flexion of the back, this paper evidences the effect on the vertebrae and discusses their effect in horses diagnosed with kissing spines
In this podcast Dr Gillian Tabor reviews the research paper:
Paper: O’Sullivan, S., McGowan, C.M., Junnila, J. and Hyytiäinen, H.K., 2022. The effect of manually facilitated flexion of the thoracic spine on the interspinous space among horses with impinging dorsal spinous processes of the thoracic vertebrae. The Veterinary Journal, 289, p.105909.

Is it time to start rugging our horses?
The temperature is dropping, and we're all feeling the cold, but when does our horse feel the cold, and when do they need a rug to keep warm?
Dr David Marlin explains the fundamentals of how the horse's own "central heating" system works and what they do to stay warm, and how their bodies are affected by the weather. What are the horse's copying mechanisms, are they better equipped to deal with colder temperatures?
Learn the basics in determining if your horse needs a rug on (yet) or not.

Dr Gillian Tabor is a charted physiotherapist specialising in the treatment and rehabilitation of horses. In this podcast, Gillian reviews a very recent research paper, Posture and Pull Pressure by Horses When Eating Hay or Haylage from a Hay Net Hung at Various Positions by Hodgson and colleagues. Through her research review, Gillian poses questions about how feeding from haynets differs from how wild horses graze on grass and occasionally on bushes/trees.
The study looked at height of haynets, the pressure exerted by horses, the difference between hay and haylage and how double-haynets affect the horse's feeding practice.
Questions asked:
Gillian and the researchers compare our domesticated horses to wild horses, what we feed them and how we provide that feed whilst trying to ensure they are getting a suitable type of forage, amount of forage and regularity of forage without causing weight/obesity issues (and the associated detrimental health effects of this), whilst ensuring they get enough forage to protect against stomach issues and ulcers.
Gillian reviews the research to help us find the answers so that we can care for our horses in a way that improves their lives.

What is tapering?
Tapering is reducing the amount of training time on the days prior to your competition. Tapering is not about reducing the intensity or effort that you or your horse puts into training but the actual duration that you work them for, this is key. Tapering is a tried and tested method to improve performance at your competition and has been used successfully in human athletes over the past 30 years but isn't so widely known in the equestrian community. In this Podcast, Dr David Marlin explains what Tapering is and how to use it in your horse's fitness and training plan to greatly improve your horse's performance!
