In this episode of the @onlyfilmsproject podcast, Mandy (@mandyleft) chats with Bettina (@ysa.gb) as they work on prints at Aire Street Darkroom (@airestreetdarkroom). Bettina is a film photographer from Manchester who Mandy met on a @northwestfilmphoto walk.
They talk about Bettina’s early influences on film, camera preferences, using portraiture to change our personalities in approaching people, zines, and exhibitions. They also discussed their thoughts on fresh perspectives of familiar surroundings, femininity in photography, inspiration for subjects and subject matter and how Instagram has changed over the last few years.
Finally they share a Film Failure Story (FFS) that many will be able to relate to as well as touching on digital photography.
On this episode Mandy (@mandyleft) talks with Nico (@thatonenico) about teaching film photography.
The conversation begins with Nico talking about his experience working in a film lab and how answering questions from lab customers sparked his interest in education. They then talked about teaching young photographers. Nico shared insights on some of their reactions to film from point and shoots, pinhole, medium format, instant and with developing and printing.
Mandy asked Nico about his personal experience with photography, particularly in traveling with film. They talked about the future of film and some of the benefits as a medium since so much of it involves hands on experience and working with older mechanical equipment.
Finally they introduced a fun new segment.

Mandy (@mandyleft), Alex (@disorganised_film) and Kristian (@kristian.faulkner) are back with first impressions of their results shooting and developing Ferrania P33. They discussed how they thought it compared to other films on the market and how this new film might fit into their different photographic styles. They finished by talking through plans of how to shoot and develop another roll in the future. Along the way, they shared some news of what they've been up to and revisited one of the more unique (PACS) pleasing analogue camera sounds from a past episode.
Shout out to Aire Street Darkroom (@airestreetdarkroom) where Mandy and Kristian developed their rolls and made a few prints.
You can find out more about Ferrania (@filmferrania) and their story at their website - https://www.filmferrania.com/
Hello and welcome back to Grainsplaining!
Today I sit down for a chat with my friend Holly @photoxcore_archive* Holly and I have both done some travelling with film recently. In this episode we discuss airport anxiety, the nightmare confusion of xray machines and our tips for travelling with film!
But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom, we also talk about the joys of travelling with film: amazing labs, the film community we have met across the globe and why you shouldn’t be put off by the daunting task of airport security!
I’ve also recruited Holly to help with our #IWDFrameTheGrain Event. We talk more about the event, why you should get involved, and hopefully encourage you to take part.
Shout outs in the episode: @a_guskaart @kalimcmillan @imageplayground @darkroomkt @analoguephotoexhibition @sistahspace_ @rinkokawauchi
*NB I’m building a reputation for audio issues! Sorry guys but during this call I was interrupted by a rainstorm (recording in a tin shed doesn’t make the best audio). We also realised Holly’s headphones weren’t working after finishing our call! I’ve done my best to edit out the echo but there might be a few robotic sounds. Bare with me…

Peggy effectively runs her own camera wiki, trying and reviewing cameras, and then sharing them with the film world for us to enjoy. Peggy’s blog exists as a diary of her life with film, including experiments, DIY fixes, home developing, re-skinning cameras, and more! It truly is a treasure trove of information.
Peggy shares her wisdom on buying cameras and staying organised with film, including how to store your negatives! This was a lovely and spontaneous chat, recorded with one of Emma’s favourite ladies in film- enjoy!

In this episode, Mandy (@mandyleft) catches up with Emma Lloyd (@emmajlloyd_).
They talked about Emma’s experiences with film in Australia since moving there last year. Going on a photowalk with members of the film community in Adelaide, independent labs in Melbourne in general and specifically FilmNeverDie (@filmneverdie), what cameras she took, how much film, what she is photographing and the idea of bonding with people in a new country over film.
Then with March being Women’s History Month and the 8th being International Women’s Day (IWD), they talk about #sheheartsfilm which Emma started while she was working at Analogue Wonderland and current projects they have both planned to recognize and celebrate the month.
Emma is organizing a print sale to benefit women’s charities. Photographers can share prints on social media that they would like to sell along with the hashtag #IWDFrameTheGrain. People who are interested in purchasing the print can coordinate with the seller and do so by making a donation to a charity that benefits women. Follow the hashtag and the Grainsplaining IG account (@grainsplaining) for updates on the project.
Mandy would like to put together a zine with portraits of female film photographers. She’d like to make the portraits this year and put together the zine in time for International Women’s Day (8th of March) in 2025. Please get in touch if you would be willing to be one of her subjects.
Hey gang! We are back! In this mini episode Emma is here to update you on life down under, film photography in Australia and an exciting project for International Women’s Day! To celebrate Women’s month, we will be organising a charity print sale under the hashtag #IWDFrameTheGrain. Listen in to find out how you can get involved, or head to our instagram feed for more details.
Emma also introduces our next mini series ‘from the archives’ featuring episodes recorded B.A (Before Australia).
P.S. This was recorded whilst lying in a hammock, on a beach, on an island in Australia… so there may be some bug noises in the background. Enjoy!

In this episode, Mandy (@mandyleft) chats with Katie (@darkroomkt). They talked about how Katie first got started with printing and then about how she built her darkroom during lockdown.
They talked about printing in colour and with different formats before discussing Katie’s work with photograms and how her process has evolved over the last couple of years.
They then discussed “Silver & Light: An Analogue Photographic Exhibition” (@analoguephotoexhibition) that Katie has organized since visiting the Canwood Gallery (canwooodgallery.com) last year during the Herefordshire Art Week. The exhibition will feature 29 analogue photographers including Mandy. There will be a private viewing on the 30th of March where many of the artists will be present and you can chat with them about their work (please RSVP through the account). Then the event itself will launch on Thursday the 4th of April and run throughout the month until the 28th on Thursdays - Sundays from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
In this episode, Mandy (@mandyleft) chats with Kris Faulkner (@kristian.faulkner) about the zone system. They talk a little bit about the history and how the system works to help improve your black and white exposures. They talk about Fred Archer, Ansel Adams and John Blakemore as photographers known for using the system.
Kris talks about Pinsta cameras and also how 3D printing by companies like Chroma Cameras can help photographers get into large format. Kris also mentioned wanting to visit the Peak District soon, particularly the Monsal Trail for some photography.
Finally they talked about compact cameras. Although the market is smaller for compact cameras than it was a few years ago, there are rebadged cameras available at places like Boots and it is a great option for people just getting into film photography.
Back in November 2023, Mandy (@mandyleft) and Alex (@disorganised_film) chatted about Alex's upcoming trip to Japan. On this episode, they catch up to talk about how the trip - Alex's experiences with street portraits, lab development and camera shops. Be sure to follow along with Alex's Instagram and also YouTube for an exciting upcoming giveaway!
In this episode, Mandy (@mandyleft) sits down with Ali (@stiffpigeons), Charlotte (@char.lottefilm) and Susie (@susiejonesband) to talk about their upcoming exhibition (@recollections.exhibition). The exhibition will be at SHOP in Preston for 3 weekends in February 2024 starting on the 10th. They talk about how the exhibition came about and some of the things anyone might want to consider if exhibiting their own work.

John-Michael and Ade explore types of light and lighting. It can get a bit jargony sometimes - knowing you’re broad from short and Rembrandt from chiaroscuro - so we’re breaking it down and aiming for plain English. Let us know if we achieved that!

Welcome (back) to The Lighting Lounge! John-Michael Mendizza and Sunbeam Ade are readying the ropes, pulleys and sleeping bags to dive deep into the rabbit hole of lighting in photography. We gonna love it and we’re pretty sure you will too 😀.
To kick us off, we are waxing philosophical on the “why” of lighting and we also share some images that inspired us and some of our own work. New for this series, we also have video on YouTube (link to come) and we share the images we discuss in our Discord so we can all talk about them there.

Hello! We are back, two beautiful butterflies that have escaped the cocoon of January blues. We recorded this episode earlier last year, in the dark depths of a cold January season, and it is safe to say we weren’t feeling our best!
In this episode we talk all about the highs and lows of a new year, and how to come out the other side of resolutions, new years goals and the constant pressure to be productive. We cover all sorts from balancing hobbies with work, gatekeeping in the photo industry, and those dreaded Kodak price increases- and how we can beat them. Join us for a chat about getting out of those downward spirals with creativity and the thing we all love most- film photography!

Happy New Year! We are back with a brand new (but old) episode, recorded at the end of last year and we cover A LOT, so buckle in!
Recorded ahead of the launch of Alex’s fantastic campaign with NAS- the National Autistic Society, in this episode we chat about Alex’s latest photography project, “Now I Know”, where Alex photographed six incredible Autistic women and non-binary people, documenting their stories, in their words.
It is a beautiful, moving campaign, and we can’t wait for you to learn all about it. In this episode Alex also tells us more about her story with autism, and how it has led her to where she is today.
Of course it wouldn’t be Grainsplaining with some extra feminism chat, so we also cover smashing the patriarchy and similar issues. Alex has some top notch advice for those who want to break into the photography industry, so we hope this can be some fantastic motivation to kick off 2023 with!

Pick your metaphor: “wild goose chase”, “nailing jelly to the wall”, “red herring”. Our topic is “the film look”. How do we define it? What do other people think? Can we get close in digital? Are Fuji film simulations the answer to all these questions? Spoiler alert: nope!

After a dip into our bulging mailbag, an introspective episode: Why do we second-guess ourselves? What keeps us from getting out and experimenting? Why are we afraid to take chances? How do we avoid becoming discouraged? Perhaps by asking a friend to shoot with us? Maybe photograph some elderly relatives? Trust two comedy writers to plumb your psyche and heal all ills. Finally, we wrap up with gear updates, and — at long last — our FABULOUS CONTEST where you can win FABULOUS PRIZES!
On this episode of On Location, Ian Fleming talks about a few less well known cameras from his collection in an effort to shine a little light on some of the underdogs from the camera world.

• buying from Japan, pros and cons — the cameras look perfect, but… (Jeff's recent Pen W, Widelux and M-1 experiences) • how to suss out a seller • eBay and sales tax • Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist - where to meet, how you know you’re not getting screwed, etc. • user vs. mint condition - how many dents and scuffs can you tolerate? • brassing, engraving, other sorts of wear (real and fake) • painted cameras? customized cameras? yay or nay? • what’s your perfect walkaround camera? what’s your travel kit? • “one camera, one lens, one film stock” - what would you choose? • Gabe brings three cameras to the grocery store • camera repair - local? send it off? who’s your most trusted and why? • originalism: is it uncool to use third-party lenses or accessories on your exotic vintage camera? • Spotlight: the camera you feel the strongest emotional connection to (Leica M4, Olympus 35RC)This is not a podcast about photography, this is a podcast about Rachel and her life since the Summer of 2019.
Over the last 18 months, long time listeners to the Sunny 16 feed will have noticed that Rachel has not been present on the podcasts in the way she was before.
As our listeners are the best, and many people have asked after Rach and enquired about her wellbeing during this time, and more importantly because she's at a point where she feels able to talk about it, I virtually sat down with Rach to talk about her experiences over the last 18 months to explain her absences.
Please know going in that this conversation is about Rachel and her partner Adam's attempts to have a child through IVF, and part of that journey was loss, so if this is likely to be upsetting to you, you might not want to listen.
Thanks to everyone who's reached out to Rach and us over the last year with support and love, even though you didn't know what was up. The film photography community is one of the loveliest and most supportive collections of people out there. We always try to bring these values to our shows, and we hugely appreciate being a part of this awesome community
Jeff and Gabe are back with another brilliant episode of I dream of cameras!
Topics this week include:
• it’s a new year, check your batteries! How to replace the obsolete PX625: the MR-9 adapter, the Weincell, the 675 + paulbg ring, etc. • wrongly valued cameras (Minoltas, Konicas and Mirandas are treated like trash; Mamiya/Sekor is garbage while Mamiya is a treasure; Pentax K1000 overvalued while ME Super is undervalued; Canon AE-1 over, EF and A-1 under; Olympus OM-1 way under, etc.) • autofocus / point and shoot - is it real photography? • does handheld metering make you more of a photographer? • plastic / toy / Lomo cameras • Polaroid, Instax, One Instant (a disaster), Polaroid Chocolate • expired film - what’s so great? • bulk loading • Spotlight: the cameras we each irrationally and indefensibly love (Hasselblad 553ELX, Canon EF) • Thanks to Fred Coury for the music and Keith Greenstein for the logosYou can find Jeff: https://twitter.com/blue439

In this episode we talk to the photographer, author and specialist photographic printer
Mike Crawford about Carol Reeds 1949 film The Third Man.
We had some audio issues with this episode especially in the first third which we've done our best to edit out where we can. Despite this we think the conversation is still well worth sharing.

This is a show about me trying to justify my purchase of a 3rd 4x5 camera. In the process I spoke to the maker of the camera, Steve Lloyd from Chroma Cameras, a known purchaser of much gear and the co-host of the Large Format Photography Podcast Simon Forster, and the man who inspired me into 4x5 in the first place, the mighty Mat Marrash.
I don't know if I succeeded in my justifying efforts, but I did succeed in having some great conversations about starting out in large format, and some of the different pathways you can take to get you going.
