In this episode you will learn about the secrets of the Inuit culture in northern Canada and how they raise some of the most emotionally intelligent children on the planet. What is so fascinating about this culture is they have parents that rarely, if ever, yell at their children; and they parent in such a way that the children are extremely resilient, compassionate, and emotionally regulated. The Inuit moms helped Michaeleen Doucleff, author and global health correspondent, completely rethink her discipline with her daughter, and in this podcast episode you will be gifted some of the biggest takeaways these Inuit mommas bestowed on Michaeleen during time with them. Michaeleen Doucleff, PhD, is the author of the New York Times Best Seller Hunt, Gather, Parent. This book describes a way of raising helpful and confident children, which moms and dads have turn to for millennia. It also explains how American families can incorporate this approach into their busy lives.
Doucleff wrote the book after travelling to three continents with her three-year-old daughter, Rosy. Maya, Inuit, and Hadzabe families showed her how to tame tantrums, motivate kids to be helpful, and build children’s confidence, and self-sufficiency. Michaeleen also is a global health correspondent for NPR Science Desk, where she reports about disease outbreaks and children’s health. She has a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Berkeley, California, a master’s degree from the University of California, Davis, and a bachelor’s degree from Caltech. To learn more about Michaeleen visit https://michaeleendoucleff.com or purchase her book "Hunt, Gather, Parent"

Today, in our 100th episode, Tammy and Tania talk about how to help children with after-school meltdowns. During the first few months of school ( particularly with younger children), we often see behaviours at the end of the day that do not align with how our child usually interacts with their world. "After-school restraint collapse" - or the after school meltdown is usually the result a long day of rules, expectations, and pressures. There are strategies that we can put in place to help our children navigate these exhausting days- join Tammy and Tania as they explore different ideas to help bring your child back to a place of wellness and ease.

With most of our lives feeling chaotic and our minds constantly in a frenzy, staying connected with our children or ourselves can be difficult. When anxiety and stress hijack parents, they may be reactive with their children, which sets the stage for dysregulation in kiddos. What’s exciting is that in today’s episode, we will discuss how mindfulness can reduce our reactivity to our children and simply make us better, more grounded parents. Diana unearths some of the science that demonstrates how effective this tool is for both our physical and emotional health and dives into some simple mindfulness tools to get parents started that are simple and manageable. Diana Winston is the Director of UCLA Mindful, the Mindfulness Centre at UCLA Health. The LA Times calls her “one of the nation’s best-known teachers of mindfulness.” A former Buddhist nun, mother of a preteen, and Los Angeles resident, she is an author and teacher, she has taught mindfulness for health and well-being since 1983 in the medical and mental health fields and universities, businesses, nonprofits, and schools. She is the author of Fully Present, The Little Book of Being, and A Buddhist Guide for Teens. In todays podcast, Dr. Ablon explores how conventional deiscipline methods often backfire, creating a downward spiral of resentment and frustration, and a missed opportunity for growth. In this refreshing approach of changing problem behavior, Dr. Ablon helps parents to understand that often behaviour is a result of "skill, not will". He looks at how like flexibility, frustration tolerance, and problem solving are all required to help a child to move through challenging moments- and how often these skills need to be nurtured in our kids.
In the podcast, Dr. Ablon walks a parent through how to use collaborative problem solving when her child refuses to get off of his xbox!
Stuart Ablon, Ph.D., is Founder and Director of Think:Kids in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. Today's episode is with Dr Jo-Ann Finkelstein, author of the hot new release "Sexism and Sensibility. Dr. Finkelstein's work focuses on understanding and dismantling sexism for parents trying to raise confident and powerful girls in a culture that often demeans them.
The world is full of mixed messages for girls: Stand up for yourself but do it softly. Be independent but not single. Love your body, just make sure it’s waxed, bleached, and thin. And then there are the more overt hostilities: being talked over, paid less, touched without permission, and having politicians debate their right to bodily autonomy. Many parents find it simpler to affirm girls’ strength than to address these distressing experiences directly. But with girls’ skyrocketing rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide, parenting them in this culture presents an urgent challenge: How do we teach girls to recognize and cope with these realities without crushing their optimism and belief that they can incite change?
Jo-Ann Finkelstein, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who was educated at Harvard University and Northwestern University and now maintains a private clinical practice. An expert blogger for Psychology Today, her work has been highlighted in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Harvard Business Review, Women’s Health, Oprah Daily, Parents, and on HuffPost and CNN. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Ms., Your Teen, among other publications. Dr. Finkelstein serves on the Advisory Board for Stop Sexual Assault in Schools, has served on the board of the Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women, volunteered for Planned Parenthood PAC, and was an organizer for the Chicago Women’s March. She lives in Chicago, Illinois.

In this riveting episode, Dr. Linscott and Dr. Ruoff explore how the current youth sports industry, pay-to-play sports, and the quest for prestige can cause unintended harm to young athletes and their families. Children and parents can both feel the pressure of belonging to a sports team where you feel the need to have a "return on investment," leading to resentment, suffering mental health, and injuries that can stop a career before it even starts. Jean Linscott, Ph.D., a clinical child psychologist, and husband Kenneth Ruoff, Ph.D are the co-authors of the newly released book "What is the Goal: The Truth About the Youth Sports Industry".

Since the death of his son, Austin, from an overdose in October 2012, Jim has devoted all his time to helping teens and parents across America understand and overcome the profound stigma surrounding this adolescent-onset illness, urging the country to tackle this issue head-on; focusing on prevention, as America does with every other serious illness. Today, we interview Dr. Connie McReynolds, author of the groundbreaking book "Solving the ADHD Riddle." Beyond traditional methods, Dr. McReynolds advocates for innovative interventions that address the root causes of learning and behavioral challenges rather than just the symptoms. Her work in neurofeedback is a testament to the effectiveness of such alternative approaches. She also illuminates the often-overlooked auditory and visual processing issues underlying learning difficulties. Dr. McReynolds explains how these challenges are not related to the ability to hear or see but to how the brain processes information, which can significantly impact attention and learning. Her approach offers hope and improved quality of life for those affected by ADHD, as evidenced by her research and publications.

This is a recording from our 2024 summit. The tween and teen years are rife with intense social challenges in school, friendships, sports, and other activities where instances of teasing, bullying, social exclusion, and marginalization are unfortunately all too common. Social media has only made this behaviour easier and more insidious. But when kids aged 9 and up can be coached by a parent to respond effectively, manage their emotions in social situations, and recognize their own self-worth, they can reclaim a sense of their own power and develop skills like resilience, social and emotional intelligence, and compassion for life. Join Kim as he gives you strategies to give tweens and teens the tools to address the problem themselves and develop mastery over the situation—rather than having parents step in and try to "fix" things. He gives vital proactive strategies to help build strong family relationships, trust, and connection so kids can be better prepared for the inevitable social challenges life brings.

In this podcast Tammy interview one of the top trauma experts on the planet, Dr. Peter Levine; founder of the Somatic Experiencing method of therapy and author of multiple books including his most recent book:
An Autobiography of Trauma: A Healing Journey
The number of anxious, depressed, hyperactive, and withdrawn children is staggering—and still growing! Millions of children and teens have experienced bullying, violence (real or in the media), or abuse. Many other kids have been traumatized from more “ordinary” ordeals such as terrifying medical procedures, accidents, loss, and divorce. In this podcast Dr. Levine will talk about ways to "Trauma-Proof" children which is a lifeline for parents who wonder how they can help their worried and troubled children. Dr. Levine offers simple but powerful tools to help children “bounce back” after feeling scared and overwhelmed.
More of Dr Levine's work can be found by visiting his website.

Play is to the child what talk is to the adult. Play therapy is a medium for expressing feelings, exploring relationships, describing experiences, disclosing wishes, and nurturing self-fulfillment. Children express themselves and their needs, relive their past, and connect with others through play. The use of toys enables children to transfer anxieties, fears, fantasies, and guilt to objects rather than people. In the process, children are safe from their own feelings and reactions because play enables children to distance themselves from traumatic events and experiences. In this podcast Tammy Schamuhn interviews Lisa Dion, Clinician, Registered Play Therapist, Co-Founder of Synergetic Play Therapy. We take a deep dive into what play therapy looks like, how it creates long-lasting changes in children, and where you can get appropriate training should you want to explore this medium in your clinical work.

In this episode Tammy interviews Registered Psychologist, Samantha Dover, on the importance of talking to our children and teens about sex, consent, and physical boundaries. While there are many things that worry us as caregivers, talking to children and teens about relationships, sex, and consent is commonly rated as pretty stressful. Unfortunately, without having safe and knowledgeable adults to answer some of their big questions, kids will find other ways of accessing the information in ways that can disastrous. This can lead to shame, stigmas, and a variety of misinformation.
By educating yourself and being available for conversation, you are not only ensuring that your child has access to relevant information, but you are also ensuring that you get a chance to discuss morals and values with them to help them make lifelong, healthy, and empowering decisions for themselves. Do you want more information on how to talk to your child about their bodies or navigate the "talk" with your teen.

Today's podcast is a recording from our 2023 Children's Mental Health and Parenting Summit. In this interview, Dr Doucleff, author of " Hunt, Gather, Parent," talks about her experience of setting off with her three-year-old daughter in tow to learn and practice parenting strategies from families in three of the world’s most traditional communities: Maya families, Inuit families, and Hadzabe families. She finds a very different parenting culture within these communities. Parents talk less, children are more independent, and the parent-child relationship is built on cooperation instead of control. These families are also family-centered instead of child-centered. In this interview, Doucleff explores the differences and how we can apply them to modern-day parenting.
