We've had plenty of conversations about how insurance should work, but this one really got me thinking.
This week on The Leadership in Insurance Podcast, I sat down with Jonathan Matus, CEO of Fairmatic, to talk about something that’s been a huge challenge in our industry—fairness in commercial auto insurance. The way risk is priced right now often feels outdated. Businesses that invest in safer driving and better fleet management don’t always see that reflected in their premiums, and that’s a problem.
Fairmatic is trying to change that. They’re using AI and behavioural data to create a pricing model that actually rewards good driving instead of just relying on broad, traditional metrics. We talked about why the current system often gets it wrong, how better data could make roads safer, and what it really takes to scale an insurtech in an industry that isn’t exactly known for embracing change.
This was such an insightful conversation, and if you’re in insurance, insurtech, or just curious about how AI is shaking up the industry, you won’t want to miss it.
Also, if you enjoy these conversations, make sure to follow The Leadership in Insurance Podcast—we’re talking to the people leading real change in the industry every week.

Is the ‘Insurtech revolution’ over? Max Drucker, CEO of Carpe Data and I explore this and other questions on this week’s The Leadership in Insurance Podcast .
We also discussed the refocus of Insurtech from revolution to measurable results using an evolutionary approach. 🎯Yes I’m talking about really understanding the ROI of insurance technology purchasing.
Insurtech is no longer about generic use of technology and AI but rather discrete solutions (often bought off the shelf) with specific use cases focused on incremental changes, created by those with insurance expertise:
🙋Think… taking two steps out of an underwriting process rather than changing the whole process.
➡️ Importance of discrete data sources properly prepared that enhance predictions and automate decision-making to enable carriers to make better decisions and manage risk rather than overwhelming them.

💡We all know the stats (🤔see below in case you’ve been living under a rock) female founding team outperform, yet women are still underrepresented in leadership roles. The We Are Insurtech Women Community was borne out of a frustration to readdress the balance.
Creating more gender balance should be a business priority but also a societal focus – ⬇️minimise gender biases in funding allocation

On this week’s The Leadership in Insurance Podcast 🎧I talk with Denise Garth, Chief Strategy Officer at Majesco where we take a deep dive into the topic of the moment Gen AI and why the ROI of removing legacy tech debt is higher than you think.
We discussed how insurance is at a crossroads ,🎌with changing risks due to climate change and changing buyer demographics amongst other drivers, and why insurers need to take a step back and take time to review their business systems and technology models - in particular their 💽legacy debt to really activate innovation and productivity.
➡️Moving away from legacy technology allows organisations to get product to market quicker, better manage or even reduce risk, improve underwriting using AI, as well as activate overall productivity gains through the use of Gen AI (👇 listen in for some impressive stats on the impact of moving away from legacy tech debt)
We also discuss how growing availability of high quality data and increasing use of 💻AI/Gen AI is creating a challenge for insurance leaders who are now also running technology businesses. It also changes who we need to hire into the insurance world – with more of a focus on genuine knowledge workers who can make decisions based on insights produced by AI, instead of keying in and out data.

How do we genuinely overcome the challenges of ‘moving data around’ in insurance?
Second time round entrepreneur Alex Cordona, CEO and co-Founder at Recorder and I discuss enabling better risk and information sharing on this week’s The Leadership in Insurance Podcast🎧, as well as some great nuggets of advice for early stage entrepreneurs.
🤔BUILD OR BUY - we discuss how the culture of technology silos is still very prevalent across insurance with a focus still on building in-house – is this holding back insurers and brokers from focusing on where they can make the most value - enabling effective underwriting?
>>We discuss how Recorder has taken on the data gap by enabling brokers to adopt 🖥️ modern technology to improve data ingestion.
↗️Culture shock - moving from FinTech to Insurtech has lead to some moments of uncertainty but Recorder is navigating that by:
➡ Not assuming what they don’t know
➡ Making sure you have a good ‘insurance’ guide…. like an excellent Head of Insurance (FinPro can definitely help you with that 😉)

We also talked about the continued value of thought leadership not just for customers but also as an important and often undervalued 😀talent retention tool.
Corelogic’s 2024 Hurricane report (👇click in the comments to download) focuses on the 32.7 million residential properties from Texas to Maine that have a combined reconstruction cost value of 💸$10.8 trillion. With the 2024 hurricane season likely be a very active season, potentially even more so than 2023 with a shift to La Niña conditions, understanding the risk to those properties is vital.
Did you know that peril risk is changing and it’s not just about climate change - it’s also due to changing population concentrations as post-pandemic people are redetermining where they are choosing to live (🌅think less densely populated, warmer, coastal areas where peril risk is already higher whilst living in larger footprint dwellings).
⇝ alongside the rising cost of repairs ⚒️, this is impacting insurers portfolio risk, making it more challenging than ever to determine
🏘️Property tech Insurtechs are stepping up to support more proactive risk management by providing information that not only better identifies risk but also supports improved risk management and mitigation - enabling more affordable coverage to customers.
We also discussed an important emerging trend that could really impact property tech and risk mitigation… using 💻 AI to predict 🎐weather events in real time (think knowing where a tornado might form or specifically land ahead of time and notifying policy holders immediately) 👇listen to the full episode for even more insights

This week’s The Leadership in Insurance Podcast 🎧continues our deep-dive into #Cyber, where I talk to Xing Xin, CEO and co-Founder at Upfort about 🔨‘enabler tools’ that can empower companies of all sizes to better manage cyber risk by unlocking their data to improve understanding of a company risk and support proactive interventions.
In this episode we take a look at the growing Cyber protection gap – even a one man band now has multiple technology touch points.
⇝We discuss how the growing SME protection gap is often underserved - particular for products that support fundamental cyber security controls and effective cyber risk management - and that’s where Upfort steps in.
We also discuss the ROI that criminals are really looking for in a cyber attack and how focusing on where ransomware attacks are the most cost-effective for criminals enables organisiations to invest more wisely in their cyber security
💡Listen in below for the top routes of entry
Xing also explains the biggest challenge in managing cyber risk – changing user behaviour - as it often at the individual level that cyber risk enters a business (👇listen in for my great analogy comparing cyber security to a smoke detectors!). We discuss how there isn’t a single bullet but multiple avenues to support changing behaviour including:
💸encouraging more proactive behaviour e.g. through incentives and discounts
📲engaging in user training, simulated attacks and AI assistance – including the use of gamification

Ever wondered how "Naivete" could be an advantage in insurance innovation?
In this week’s The Leadership in Insurance Podcast🎧 with Justin Levine, CEO at Shepherd, I explore his unique background and how this has enabled him to challenge traditional views of insurance including focusing on hiring ‘micro-entrepreneurs’.
We look at the advantages of Justin's background in 🏢construction and his journey into the tech-enabled insurance space via risk management and construction finance.
💡 He emphasises the advantages of being "naïve" and questioning the status quo, in an industry that can often be resistant to change, whilst still valuing experience and expertise.
🤔Insurtech is more than a buzzword…. Justine provides us with great explanation of Insurtech (listen below for more details👇 ) including technology that:
➡ Supports improved underwriting including integrating novel sector-specific data sources
➡ Improves data extraction and analysis
➡ Enhances risk management services
We also explored the importance of evolving your business model whilst finding a balance between improving direct client services and enhancing cores platform for internal efficiency
💬Justin also explains how Shepherd focuses on seeking out 'micro entrepreneurs' passionate about innovation and transforming the traditional insurance model and those excited about their multi-product approach and expansion plans.
💡 including a discuss of Shepherd’s upcoming plans to complement their core casualty offering with a builders risk insurance product and their wider plans too expand into industries adjacent to construction.

Good morning and welcome back to this week's episode of The Leadership In Insurance Podcast where for this week's episode I am joined by Tom Spier, Supercede's CCO.
In this episode we dig in to all things #Reinsurance and predominately the big topic of, why is reinsurance innovation underserved?
Tom has a great ocean analogy for insurance innovation (see below 👇 )
🐠 He equates the brightly coloured fish swimming at the top of the sea to be the retail brokers and MGAs attracting the domestic buyers. Then we get to the darker, uglier fish further down ocean (& further down the value chain) - these are the harder to solve, less attractive problems that lack innovation ➡ this is what Supercede are tackling.
We look at whether as an industry, are we approaching Reinsurance wrong?
It's often seen as an addition to insurance, often an after thought - this is even highlighted by putting the 'Re' in brackets ➡ (Re)insurance - the solutions we currently have aren't fit for purpose and they won't fit the same mold as insurance.
Do we need to change our perspective? 💭 Supercede's only thought is reinsurance - never an after thought - that's where innovation lies.

Ever wondered what the secret sauce is for hiring and growing and a team, especially as an early stage business?
Rebekah Bostan, Director of Operations at FinPro, takes over The Leadership in Insurance Podcast this week turning the tables on me diving into all the questions you've probably wanted to ask as a hiring manager or a founding team member looking to grow your team.
Some highlights from our conversation 👇
💡How do early businesses grow their team sustainability? - know your company personality and direction and really embed shared values to create a company story
💡How to attract pure SaaS talent in a challenging hiring market - accept it is hard but have a proactive plan about your talent pools and focus on enabling all employees to become storytelling advocates
💡How to overcome the barriers to cross industry hiring - a good onboarding process will overcome speed to ramp up concerns
💡How someone leaving is a chance to innovate a role and a team - don't just replace 'like with like' -- look for ways to bring in new diverse talent pools including by restructuring roles
💡What genuinely make people stay or leave a role and a business - focus on living your company values and personality every day and be brave and create challenges to allow employees to grow
📢 And you'll have to listen to the end for my three best pieces of recruiting advice!

Wildfire science and satellite imagery expertise to solve homeowners’ wildfire insurance...

🎙 We delve into AI - to what extent is it an opportunity or a threat? Will this force the legal profession to evolve again?
🎙 We examine the link between lawyers and trust, and how this will evolve with AI - people still want humans - but will start to see less reliance on humans for advice? When will society tolerate a robot performing surgery?

Last week, at ITC DIA’s Barcelona conference I was lucky enough to share the stage with some of the industry’s most renowned thought leaders to host a conversation around the future of the workforce and how #Innovation, #Diversity & the war for #Talent go hand in hand.
🎙 Pamela Thomson-Hall - CEO International and Executive Officer, WTW
🎙 Alan De Bruyne, Inclusion & Diversity Strategist, Diversito
🎙 Marguerite Soeteman-Reijnen, Former Chairman & Global Board Member, Aon
It was a truly inspiring conversation with so many great takeaways, so if you weren’t able to join us for the live conversation last week, you can catch the recording on the pod this week
(Or if you loved it so much you’d like to listen again!)
Some of the many take aways…
👉 "Don't forget the why": The underlying purpose of diversity is not just about ticking boxes; it's about harnessing the power of varied viewpoints to drive better decision-making and foster innovation. When diverse voices are heard, organisations thrive.
👉 "DE&I is hard work but pays out": Building a truly inclusive culture requires commitment and effort. However, the return on investment in terms of improved business outcomes and employee engagement is well worth it. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved.
👉 "DE&I is a leadership task": Diverse and inclusive organizations start with strong leadership. Leaders must actively champion diversity, ensuring there is a diverse pool of talent behind them. By doing so, they set the stage for success and enable the full potential of their teams.
👉 "Have your eyes open to see others and recognize them": Building a diverse and inclusive workplace requires an intentional effort to acknowledge and value the contributions of others. By embracing different perspectives, we foster an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and appreciated.
👉 "Representation matters": People tend to stay with a company when they see others who share their backgrounds and experiences. By promoting diversity and inclusion, we create a sense of belonging that attracts and retains top talent, fueling long-term success.
Thank you to The ITC DIA Europe Community for having us - proud to be a media partner for such a great event and glad to be sharing the conversation further

I’m excited to announce the release of a particularly special episode of The Leadership In Insurance Podcast today…
Last week we were lucky enough to welcome, Instanda’s CEO and Co-Founder, Tim Hardcastle into FinPro. towers to record a live episode all about #entrepreneurship. Many of you will know Tim and the Instanda team, they’ve been on our podcast guest hit list for a while now so we’re glad the day has come!
For each episode, we typically plan out the episode structure prior to the recording (previous guests, you’ll know the process!) We delve into each founder’s unique view on the #insurtech landscape and how their company are contributing to the #insurance innovation ecosystem.
We try and maintain a candid nature while also (mostly!) sticking to script - this episode was slightly different… Tim is a natural presenter and our conversation evolved into a much richer and wider discussion around the mindsets of founders and what it takes to be an #entrepreneur.
Tim also flipped the interviewer / interviewee role on me and asked about my career as an entrepreneur. We discussed what motivates people to start their own business, is it restlessness? the need to make your own path? a mid-life crisis?
We discussed #funding and #bootstrapping and Tim’s choices to take the path less trodden. The Instanda team bootstrapped for five years and we get into the lessons learnt from this - the importance of ‘backing yourself with your own sweat capital and personal capital’ as he puts it - how deep do you learn those lessons if you don’t have as much at stake?
This conversation was a really fun one, you’ll hear the laughter throughout - thank you Tim joining me - and we’ve got those pre-planned questions to cover so you’ll have to come back soon!

We are sharing a really great episode on The Leadership In Insurance Podcast today. I sat down with Aviad Pinkovezky, President at First Connect, a Hippo Insurance company to discuss all things from Hippo’s story, to acquiring First Connect and beyond.
Acquired by Hippo in 2020, First Connect is a digital platform that helps independent insurance agents access carriers and insurtechs they may not otherwise reach on their own.
Aviad and I discuss a whole host of topics (and could have spoken for much longer!) digging into Aviad’s background in product, to the growth of Hippo, to why partner and the opportunities that lie in collaboration. Here are some of the highlights…
👉 As someone from the product side of technology - how do you think perception of insurance as an employment destination for product and tech people has evolved over time?
👉 The Insurtech landscape from a wider lense - What have been the biggest improvements of insurance customer experience in the time you’ve been at hippo? What part has product played in that?
👉 First Connect Acquisition - What the rational? What’s the opportunity you saw? Why this route as opposed to doubling down on the existing success you have?
👉 First Connect on a personal level - does it feel like a start up? Does it need to?
👉 Collaboration in the Insurance industry, what have you learnt? How can we empace this more?
👉 & Finally, what’s next for First Connect?
Thank you Aviad for your time, it was great to speak to you!

Sharing a rather special episode on The Leadership In Insurance Podcast this week, with one of our favourite podcasting guests. It’s not often that we invite people back on pod, so when we do you know it’s a good one…
This week we welcome back Bryan Falchuk for a conversation all about #collaboration, to celebrate the release of his new book, ‘The Future of Insurance : Volume III. The Collaborators’.
Bryan is one of the thought leaders I truly admire in this space. Inspired by the findings of the Insurance Collaboration Index, Bryan and David Gritz of InsurTech NY collaborated on this project to help the industry as we strive to innovate and evolve.
In this episode we touch on some of the broader themes explored in the book...
👉 How do we get better at collaboration? What could we achieve if we truly embraced this?
👉 How do we innovate and collaborate in an inherently risk averse environment? & How do we work around that?
👉 Do we reward risk enough? In Insurance no new book will ever perform well - can we really push boundaries if this is how the industry operates?
I really enjoyed this one - and thank you Bryan for joining me to share some of the book's findings.

Hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Leadership in Insurance Podcast where this week we are lucky enough to be joined by Dax Craig, co-founder and president of Pie Insurance.
Pie doesn’t need much of an introduction to those of us in the insurtech world, but for those who don’t know Pie, they are a workers’ compensation insurer with a direct distribution model and a fully digital experience. Their aim is to serve small businesses with insurance that is easy, accessible and affordable.
We dig into what it takes to grow an insurtech, Pie’s journey from start up to scale up and how our goalposts can change. We discuss the lessons learnt and the process of getting things wrong - sometimes its a case of right thesis, wrong application. We chat about culture and the balancing act of managing culture at scale - “We wouldn’t lie to our clients, we apply the same to our team”, as Dax puts it, “We don’t have all the answers, but we admit it”.
As well as sharing a truly inspiring story of insurtech growth and success, Dax also shares a lot of insight that I will take forward into my own business. Do give this one a listen, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Here are some of the highlights…
🚀 The ethos behind Pie - providing coverage that really is ‘as easy as pie’
🚀 A deep dive in to the insurance ecosystem : Is it outdated? What is actually outdated? Is it just the tech that’s missing?
🚀 ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast’ - how do you maintain culture at scale?
🚀 The concept of a ‘Unicorn’ - it’s quite literally a mythical term that doesn’t exist, so is it a helpful term?
🚀 The art vs science argument for insurance : underwriters vs actuaries, are they at odds over price?
Thank you Dax for your time, it was great to speak to you!

Hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Leadership in Insurance Podcast where this week we are lucky enough to be joined by Edward Ryall, Co-Founder of Neptune Mutual, to do a deep dive into #cryptocurrency market risks.
In this episode, Edward shares what the team at Neptune Mutual are doing & it's truly unique. Their platform uses a parametric model to simplify #decentralised insurance and explores new avenues to creating user-centric risk protection products on the #blockchain.
We cover a lot of ground in this episode & if you're like myself and interested in #crypto then I'm sure you'll find this episode interesting.
Here are some of the highlights...
💲 How big is the insurance risk in crypto? & What are the risks?
💲 A deep dive into de-fi insurance - Has de-fi got anything wrong?
💲 All things UX - everyone knows it's important, but how do you do it right?
💲 Buying insurance without an insurable interest - does that put us at risk of bad actors?
💲 Blockchain space is new with limited data available & traditional insurers are reticent about jumping into this space - what are the challenges of operating in a risk-averse environment?
Thank you Edward for your time, it was great to speak to you!

Hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Leadership in Insurance Podcast, it's a very special episode this week and the last episode in our #LiveFromITI series 🎧
For those of you who tune in often you’ll know about my soft spot for claims, I’m a self-proclaimed claims nerd, & love to have conversations around the innovation happening in this space. So when Michael Lewis told me about the Claims Village pop-up at the London Insurtech Insights conference I jumped at the chance to record a live podcast roaming the event. Michael is CEO & Co-Founder of Claim Technology , an insurtech marketplace enabling anyone involved in the claims process to automate administrative tasks and customer journeys.
The Claims Village featured seven innovative insurtechs alongside Claim Technology ; Bdeo, Five Sigma, Imburse, omni:us, Resistant AI, Sprout.ai, and Trustly, each one challenging the status quo & aiming to optimize and streamline the claims process. Tune in to hear more from Claims Village and some insider insights from Philip Ternhem Kotuniak, Ofer Milavski, Lawrence Buckler, Chris Andrew & David Morris 🎙
Thank you, Michael, Claim Technology & everyone involved in Claims Village for this brilliant idea - it really was a true highlight of the Insurtech Insights exhibition

We have an extra episode out on The Leadership In Insurance Podcast today, we don't normally release an episode on a Friday but this bonus episode is particularly topical for everything that has happened this past week.
I connected with Max Bruner, CEO & Founder of Anzen Insurance this week after following his insightful commentary and advice for founders in light of the Silicon Valley Bank events.
The last week has without a doubt been a roller coaster ride for tech founders, employees, investors, and executives impacted by the failure of Silicon Valley Bank… at the mercy of the markets, the media, and the federal government, and initially with many more questions than answers. After the Federal Reserve, Treasury, and FDIC guaranteed depositors were protected in full, a collective sigh of relief was breathed by bank depositors and everyone in their orbit.
With the help of Brett McKenzie, we got together this week to record an extra episode discussing #SVB and how the turn of events is impacting the insurtech ecosystem.
Here are some of Max's recommendations - & tune in to this episode to hear more... 🎧
✅ Have a cash runway: don’t learn the hard way the way many of us have—expect a several month slowdown in #VC financing and do what you can to find an extra three months or more of runway than you had planned last week.
✅ Diversify your accounts: be aware of what is covered and what is not under the #fdic for each account.
✅ Have at least two banking partners with active accounts. Don’t concentrate all funds in one sector specific bank.
✅ Be certain that your payroll provider is diversified in their treasury management.
✅ Know what a sweep account is—the pros and cons—and know that you can control your funds and have appropriate short-term liquidity if invested in securities.
Thanks again Max Bruner for not only getting together this week to record this bonus episode but also for the valuable insight you are sharing for the insurtech community 🙌

One of the (many!) highlights of Insurtech Insights last week was the chance to meet so many people who are fans and listeners of The Leadership In Insurance Podcast
The podcast is at the centre of what we do at FinPro. and it’s so exciting to see how it’s grown. It’s something we love doing, and we’ve been lucky enough to have met so many great guests and friends through hosting these conversations.
Day 2 of Insurtech Insights was a particular highlight as we hosted our first live podcast episode on stage with Oded Barak, CEO & Co-Founder of Five Sigma.
Going from seeing our audience as the weekly download figures to a room full of people feels like a true milestone. Thank you to Oded, the Five Sigma team, Insurtech Insights & all our listeners for making it happen! Already looking forward to doing it all again in New York in June 🎧
For those of you who didn't catch the live podcast last week, (or if you'd like to listen again!), I hope you enjoy tuning into our conversation about all things claims 🎧

Starting the week with a really great episode of The Leadership In Insurance Podcast. I sat down with Amir Kabir , partner at AV8 Ventures to chat about all things insurtech valuations, and emerging markets.
I always enjoy speaking to people in venture about their take on innovation as they are quick to spot what’s on the horizon. Prior to AV8, Amir was an investment director and founding team member at Munich Re Ventures where he lead and managed investment efforts for two of the funds and made early bets in Insurtech. Now at AV8 Amir heads up with fintech and insurtech portfolios.
We covered lots of ground in this conversation, discussing the evolution of insurtech and challenging how we approach valuations. We got stuck into what’s going on in Latam. What I particularly enjoyed about this conversation was that Amir has so many thoughts to share on how as an industry we approach emerging markets.
He raised some fascinating points I’ve been mulling over since.. such as, are we making a mistake by expecting the emerging markets to follow the same patterns that we’ve seen in more mature markets? Is this inherently limiting innovation?
Here are some of the highlights...
📌 Investing in insurtech - what do you look out for and what’s exciting you right now?
📌 How do go about valuing an insurtech? Have mistakes been made in how they are valued in the past?
📌 The Latam market - What is interesting about the insurtech activity in Latam?
📌 Parametric insurance and how it's closing the protection gap
📌 What is the next evolution of insurtech?
Thank you again Amir for joining us on the podcast!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Christie Downs, CEO and Co-Founder of handdii on The Leadership In Insurance Podcast this week to discuss all things construction, culture and start up life.
Handdii is a property insurance claims fulfilment platform which aims to make communication between insurers, trades and customers better and faster.
After having the Handdii team on our podcast hitlist for a while, Christie and I finally met face-to-face at Insurtech Connect in Vegas last September. For those of you who were there, I’m sure you’ll remember the team decked out in their signature high-vis jackets wandering around the conference handing out the rubber ducks (One duck made its way back to London and has become a bit of an office mascot for team FinPro!)
Christie - thanks for being a great guest, I really enjoyed this episode - not only because I love what Handdii are doing, but also because this episode was really fun - you can hear our laughter throughout!
Here are some of the highlights....
⭐️ What is the problem Handii is trying to solve?
⭐️ From a practical perspective is the insurance industry set up to serve small businesses?
⭐️ How are marketplaces impacting insurance innovation?
⭐️ Are we seeing true innovation in insurtech or just a natural evolution?
⭐️ What's next for Handdii?
Give this one a listen - or for those of you who opt for the video version, you’ll catch Christie in the signature yellow jacket

Starting off the week with a true The Leadership In Insurance Podcast highlight! This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Tom Clarke to dig into all things EV and the evolution of motor insurance.
I’ve known Tom for a while now, and he really is the guru when it comes to all things EV. He is the Chief EV Officer at Abacai and sits on the advisory board at Voltric after 10 years at LV=. If you want to know about Electric Vehicles, Tom is the guy!
We dug into a whole host of topics from emerging industries, and new profiles to consider to the wider questions that insuring electric vehicles pose such as should EV’s be insured in the same way?
A truly fascinating conversation, and one that could have gone on for hours with so much to unpack. We kept it to 40 minutes, but maybe we should do a part 2!
Here are some of the highlights…
🚙 How do go about insuring EV’s? The differences and evolutions in traditional motor insurance
🚙 The economic downturn & fraudulent claims - with new products to insure, how do you validate these claims?
🚙 Emerging ecosystems, looking at Tesla’s approach to EV & Tom’s ‘Apple vs Android’ analogy
🚙 What’s next for EV…🚀
Thank you again Tom Clarke - this episode truly is a podcast favourite!

Another great episode out on the podcast this Monday morning, I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with the lovely Rosina Smith, Chief Product Officer at McKenzie Intelligence Services Ltd.
London-based MIS provides data intelligence on a global scale with a mission to empower informed decision-making for the insurance industry.
We dig into Rosina’s background, how she moved into the world of insurtech and all the work they are doing at MIS, & of course, being the claims nerd that I am, we touched on the importance of innovation in the event-response space.
All in all a great conversation, and a fabulous listen to kick start your week. Here are some of the highlights...
📌 The surprises, challenges, and rewards of moving from the incumbent world, to a start-up and now the scale-up environment
📌 How MIS facilitates informed decision-making for the Lloyd’s market
📌 The future use cases of MIS in the insurance industry given the increasingly dynamic global environment we are living in

So The Leadership In Insurance Podcast is back with a bang for 2023...We a kicking off the year with a great first episode with the one and only Nigel Walsh, Head of Insurance at Google. 💥
I'm sure most of you already know Nigel, he really is at the heart of insurance innovation. In this episode, he shared Google's perspective on insurance and what's on the horizon for innovation in 2023.
Here are some of the highlights:
📌 What does innovation mean for you?
📌What role does Google Cloud play within innovation in insurance?
📌 What challenges facing insurers that Google Cloud hopes to solve with technology?
📌 Google’s mission is to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful, how does this play into what Google Cloud is doing in insurance?
📌 When it comes to innovation, are insurers still falling into the trap of only being reactive? What else can insurers do to stay ahead?

Another great episode out on the podcast this Monday morning, I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Jonathan Roomer, Co-Founder and Head of Customer Success at YuLife.
YuLife is a London-based life insurer (just around the corner from us actually!) who are disrupting the life insurance space through gamification.
Launched in 2016, YuLife is digital life insurance striving to transform the current space by addressing a protection gap that has only widened as a result of the pandemic. The insurtech’s philosophy believes that the insurance industry is not fit for the future due to low trust, low perceived value, and low engagement. Their motto 'Protect Lives, Reward Living & Inspire Life' truly encapsulates this.
We dig into the story of YuLife, their strategy of incentivising healthy lifestyle habits and the link between life insurance and well-being. Here are some of the highlights..
📌 As one of five co-founders, how did you come together and what inspired the formation of YuLife?
📌 Why is life insurance and well-being intrinsically linked?
📌 The gamification of healthy lifestyle habits to improve your user's health and wellness?
📌 Balancing & maintaining culture in a fast-growing insurtech
📌 What’s next for YuLife & what does 2023 have to offer? 🚀
Thanks for joining me for the conversation Jonathan!

In this week's episode we hear from Alex Bond, FinPro founder and the Leadership in Insurance Podcast host himself.
We wanted to do something slightly different with this podcast and it reflects some of the wider initiatives we are developing with FinPro. FinPro is a recruitment business specialising in the Insurtech sector and have been fortunate to work with some of the most exciting and innovative people operating within the sector. We have had fantastic guests who have shared their journeys and their experiences all with the objective of moving the Insurtech industry forward. Something we have done less is get to know the people behind the stories. Businesses are an net result of the talent and efforts of the people employed within them. This is a statement of the obvious but when we operate within the tech sector it can be easy to forget that despite how tech focussed you might be it is the people that drive the business and its innovation. We wanted to get to know more about the challenges that are not directly the work – particularly we wanted to know the challenges founders face when trying to drive fledgling businesses to success.
We didn’t feel we could ask our guests to share their fears, hopes and aspirations if we do not share some of our own biggest challenges so we have taken a different path with the podcast today and we have our host Alex discuss his challenges with mental health, his experiences with managing his mental health and what he thinks we can do to accommodate and help people manage their mental health in the world of start-ups.
We hope by doing this we will be able to have more honest and transparent conversations that touch on the founders challenges on a personal level – hopefully if we make the first move we can encourage more conversations about mental health.
We hope you enjoy it.

Niji is one-half of a husband and wife co-founding team behind AgentSync the broker compliance management system.

When running an Insurance leadership Podcast it's sometimes nice to connect with someone on something that isn't just Insurance. Huw Edwards is a CEO and Co-Founder on a mission firstly to deliver a world-class insurance solution to eCommerce businesses with Cyber Fortress but also to rescue "over-educated, high achievers from corporate suffering".
It's a mission that we both share - you can work hard, be successful outside of the big corporate world so why don't more people do it?
This was a fun conversation, in it we talk about:
Innovation labs - without budget and authority what's the point?

We talk often of pivots in the start-up world but I have yet to speak to someone that truly pivoted - often I would argue it's a deviation. Today I was lucky enough to sit down with Meeri Rebane, Co-CEO of Inzmo, an insurance provider born out of a motorbike tracking business.
In the ultimate example of listening to customer feedback, Meeri told me how the business was born from the feedback they got from their original business model - tracking stolen bikes.

Philip is CEO of Now Insurance an AI-driven insurance platform to providing professional liability cover within 3 minutes.

How do you build an AI underwriting solution - where do the people fit in
The importance of speed and customer journey to the small business customer
Why launch as an MGA first? Why go full-stack?
Challenges of building new products in an MGA
USA capacity cycles vs Lloyd's
The ironic balance between SME business - great business for underwriters but the bad experience for the consumer
The importance of digital marketing to the success of SME business
Why there are no cheap costs of customer acquisition
The broker model means that the insurer focuses on the broker as the customer, not the consumer
We discuss how to create more touchpoints with the customer - add value
I NEARLY get a scoop on some patented tech - but don't!
How to run a tech-enabled platform as a non-tech person
The creative challenge of insurance businesses
Thanks to Philip for being a great guest.
