A series to help you get great photographs (including wildlife) when travelling. The series includes volunteering and why it provides a serious alternative to traditional wildlife photography trips. It looks at some of the techniques photographers use to find subjects and get great results.I also share some of my more unusual trips including visiting the wreck of the RMS Titanic and climbing mount Kilimanjaro. This podcast is for those with an interest in photography, wildlife, conservation and adventure.
The podcast Wildlife and Adventure Photography is created by Graham. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Welcome to the 150th episode of the podcast.
I was inspired at 3.00 am to talk about when a photograph isn't a photograph; when it becomes something more.
I've spoken about photojournalism and that type of photography has the power to influence global events. For most of us, that will not be a consideration, but being able to take good photographs, especially portraits, can have a positive impact on us, and people we haven't met yet.
People come in and out of our lives for various reasons, and we all have different phases in our lives. Sometimes it's great to look back on some of them and share them with people we care about.
If you're the type of photographer who leaves the camera hidden away until it's time to go on your annual vacation (or whatever it might be), you might be doing yourself a disservice. And, especially now that most of us carry smartphones around, there's no reason why you shouldn't be in a position to grab those 'moments' as they occur.
Here are the suggestions I have for you in the podcast:
Sign up and take the 14-day challenge.
Or take one of my online courses.
Whatever you do, remember that some of your photographs might be telling your story in the future to someone who hasn't even been born yet!
I hope you enjoy it.
Graham

Modes and the exposure triangle revisited:
I spoke about this subject some time ago and I had a very positive reaction to it. So, I thought it was worth a revisit!
If you don’t understand the exposure triangle, your results will be limited and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to shoot the kind of photographs you would like to. I say this with some conviction as one of the most common questions I am asked is ‘How can I get a sharp subject and an out-of-focus background?’.
Simply put, once you understand the exposure triangle, the full creative capability of you and your camera can be realised. Without that understanding, you’re likely to be stuck on ‘Auto’.
The exposure triangle is the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO (sensitivity). To some people, it looks quite complicated at first. But, especially if you drive a car, you are already, instinctively, dealing with a similar relationship.
Modes take advantage of the automation offered by today's cameras. They relate to the exposure triangle and allow the camera to do some of the heavy lifting for you, freeing you to indulge in your creativity and produce great results.
If you are struggling with the exposure triangle (or any other aspect of photography), check out my course: Discovering DSLR and Mirrorless Photography.
I hope you enjoy the podcast.

As I'm recording this towards the end of 2024, I've been looking back at what went well, and what didn't. And identifying the lessons I've learned this year that I can take with me into 2025 (and make a lot of new mistakes!).
Something that I believe can be very helpful is to take part in a photography project. In this podcast, I'll take you through a few project ideas, and outline why I think they can be very valuable to improving your photography.
Here's the link to my 14 day challenge (discussed in the podcast).

Have you ever tried street photography?
If you haven't, but you're thinking about it, now is a good time to start.
The primary reason for this is the frequent use of smartphones in the street. I'm sure you've had to avoid a few "phone zombies" in your time, and this makes it very easy to discretely take street photographs. People will just assume that you're on your phone.
So what do you need to think about before you get started? You're probably already carrying the ideal camera, in your phone. And that allows you to blend into the general street traffic. But there are a few other things:
I've made a few suggestions. See what you think of them!

Hello again,
I'm recording this podcast at the end of 2024 (Boxing Day, actually) and thought I'd share a little background to my activities this year. I've referred to it as my 'Blooper Reel' because I share some of the less glamorous aspects of wildlife photography.
In particular, I thought I'd share the story of my trip to Namibia, to support EHRA. And, some reasons why I always hope for the best, but plan for the worst!
I hope you enjoy it.
Best wishes,
Graham

Being part of a photography community is a great way to improve your photography, connect with other photographers, and have more fun!
Not everyone has access to a local photography community. So, in this podcast, I'll talk through a few options you have if you live in a more remote location. And I'll make a few suggestions for those of you in larger communities where photography groups might exist.
And, if all else fails, you can always take on photography challenges.
For me, photography is a creative outlet, and having that outlet is a great way to step back from the stresses of everyday life.
So, whatever you do, commit to it, make it a habit, and hold yourself accountable!
I hope you enjoy it.

Macro-photography can be very rewarding. Things to think about:
1. Magnification & Ratio
How large the subject appears in the frame compared to its actual size. In macro photography, the subject is typically life-sized or larger.
2. Depth of Field (DOF)
Using a small aperture like f/16 or f/22 can help increase DOF and keep more of the subject in focus, but may require slower shutter speeds or higher ISO.
If you’re not familiar with DoF, check out my course!
3. Lighting
Consider using diffused light to reduce harsh shadows and evenly illuminate the subject. Ring lights or macro flashes can be very useful because they provide even, directional lighting.
4. Focusing Techniques
Macro lenses typically offer manual focus due to the extreme precision required at close distances.
5. Stability and Camera Shake
Consider a tripod, remote- shutter release or self-timer to minimize camera shake.
6. Choosing the Right Lens
A dedicated macro lens (usually 50mm, 100mm, or 150mm) can be expensive. Consider extension tubes. They're cheaper than buying dedicated lenses, but there may be compromises.
7. Composition
Pay attention to the background and foreground.
8. Insect & Nature Photography Considerations
If you're photographing small plants or flowers, consider the time of day as morning light can be softer and dew can add interesting details to the subject.
9. Post-Processing
Post-processing can help enhance colours, sharpen details, or even combine images for focus stacking.
Here are a few lens suggestions (November 2024):
Canon:
DSLR: EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Mirrorless: RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Nikon:
DSLR: AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
Mirrorless: Z 105mm f/2.8 VR S
Sony:
Sony full frame: FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS
Sony APS-C: E 30mm f/3.5 Macro
Sigma:
105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro: Available for both Canon, Nikon, and Sigma cameras.
70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art: From Sigma's "Art" line. Available for Canon, Nikon, and Sony mirrorless cameras.
Tamron:
90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD: Available for Canon and Nikon DSLRs.
What to look for when buying a lens:
1. Magnification Ratio: 1:1.
2. Focal Length: 90mm or 100mm, for a longer working distance from the subject, (useful for shooting insects or delicate subjects).
3. Stabilization: Image stabilization (IS, VR, or

This podcast was inspired by another podcast that I listen to (“The rest is history”) where they spoke about Lee Miller. This, in turn, was prompted by the 2023 movie starring Kate Winslet.
Lee Miller was largely forgotten until her biography came out in the 1980’s (she died in 1977). She had a privileged upbringing and, I think it’s fair to say, lacked any purpose in her life. This changed when the Second World War started, and she became a war photographer.
If you google Lee Miller, the first photograph you’re likely to see is of her in Hitler’s bath in his flat in Munich. I understand that she was in his apartment by accident and the reason for the bath was that she was washing off the mud from the Dachau concentration camp, which she’d just visited.
Photojournalism is a central part of my approach to photography (the “visual storyteller”) and I always respect the people who are willing to put themselves on the front line. Lee Miller was in real danger of death, and journalists and photographers are often targeted to stop the truth from getting out (this is happening in Palestine as I write).
Another aspect is censorship and misinformation. In Lee Millers case, the photographs she took at Dachau featured in two spreads in Vogue, clearly showing what had happened there. Another set, showing American bombers dropping napalm on German positions, was censored.
So, what are the takeaways for our photography? I suggest these:
Imagine you only have a roll of 12 (or 24, or 36) images available and think before you press the shutter button: What is this photograph about? What is the story you want to tell?
Try a film camera if you’re not familiar with using them, as you need a different approach and I believe this will positively impact your work.
When is a photograph dishonest? For example, some, pre-Google maps, real estate photographs create an impression of space. So the question has to be, is the intention to deceive the viewer? What is your intention? This is important with the amount of misinformation we see today, much of it photographic.
I hope you find it thought provoking...
Graham

My guest on this podcast is Rachel Harris, Managing Director of EHRA Namibia.
EHRA is a project I’ve personally been involved with and I recently returned from a fundraising event with them in Namibia. Rachel talks about the aims of EHRA, their beginnings and their current activities.
She has built up an award-winning eco-tourism volunteer programme (active since 2004) which helps to fund their conservation activities. EHRA also runs a community education programme to help the local people live with the elephants and minimise conflicts.
If you’d like to learn more about EHRA or get involved in their work, you can find out more on their website: https://www.ehranamibia.org/

I was asked this question by a listener (thank you) who is planning an exciting trip to see gorillas (and other animals). So what can you do to protect your camera in different environments?
To protect my lenses, I do a couple of things:
For the lens and body, I have invested in a splash cover from Aquatech. This has an elasticated opening at one end (that I put around the lens hood) and an opening at the other that allows access to the camera controls. A clear window at the back of the hood lets me see the camera screen.
This is great in wet environments and dusty environments and minimises the chances of water and dust getting into the camera or lens.
Other hacks:
I hope you find this useful.

In my wildlife photography tips podcasts, I always recommend that people practice on birds. But why should they do that?
Well, for one thing, most of us have access to these wild animals and they allow us to get to know our cameras.
Photographing birds is also an opportunity to start thinking like a wildlife photographer:
These are just a few of the questions you should be asking yourself.
When it comes to using your camera, have you thought about whether back-button focus is appropriate?
How can you get your camera's auto-focus system to work most efficiently?
What shutter speed should you use? Are you shooting RAW?
I go through a number of these options and issues in the podcast. In some cases, there will be conflicting opinions about which option is best in certain situations. In those cases, I suggest you do what is most comfortable for you. The most important thing is for you to be shooting images you love and for you to continue to experiment with and evolve your photography.
I hope you enjoy it.

I believe there are two aspects to what makes a good photograph. The first is the technical side. Different people will have different ways of categorising this aspect and for the sake of this podcast I used five elements:
The second aspect is to look at the questions you are asking. I am constantly inspired by other people's work and I'll typically ask:
What inevitably happens after answering the second question is that I will put my spin on it and get the outcome I want.
So, if you're not sure what makes a good photograph for you (and this, of course, is all subjective), start by asking more questions. A comment that I like is that the quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask. I think this is true for photography.
Another thing to think about is the result you are driving for. So, begin with the end in mind and ask the questions that will lead to you achieving the outcome you are striving for.
And, a final comment about social media: Shoot what you love and don't worry about the number of Likes. And, ignore unsolicited comments. Only accept comments from the people you would choose to approach for feedback.

Flash photography certainly has its place, but not always where you might think.
Sure, it is one option in low ambient light situations and can also be used in daylight to make sure the subject is correctly exposed without overexposing everything else. But is a standard 'pop-up' flash the best option.
Pop-ups are useful but are all but guaranteed to create red-eye when photographing people. And are they really powerful enough to be useful.
Realistically you need to buy a flash gun and I talk about a few of the things to consider when using one. These will also influence which flashgun is right for you!
Now, there were some maths in this podcast. The important maths is the Guide Number (GN) of the flash. This is calculated from:
GN = (flashgun to subject distance) x (Aperture needed for good exposure)
This will be specified at a particular ISO. The example I gave is a distance of 7.5 meters at aperture f/8, which gives a GN of 60 (7.5 x 8) @ ISO 100.
Obviously you will need to vary the aperture and/or ISO as you change the distance to your subject, but the answer to the equation will always be 60.
Flash (especially off-camera flash) adds another dimension to your photography and is well worth exploring.

I've been interested in psychology for a long time and I'm especially interested in how it relates to photography. In this case it's composition and why certain compositional elements are very effective.
In this short podcast I'll do my best to explain my understanding of seven elements:
While I don't expect these insights to revolutionise your photography, it might give you pause for thought about which elements are around you and how you can use them in your photographs.

I thought I would run through what I believe are the most important aspects of wildlife photography. So, apologies if you've heard this before (but you might hear something new, too!).
These are the key things to consider and I speak about each in the podcast:
As always, you need to be patient and prepared at all times!

Hello again,
This is for you if you can't quite get the results you're looking for. I'm sure that we've all had the experience of thinking we've just created a great photograph, only to find that the result isn't what we'd hoped for. This can be very frustrating, especially if it's something that happens often.
For me, photography is a subject that I am continuously learning about. I get inspired by other people and apply their ideas to my work. However, it's impossible to do that if you don't understand the basics of photography. So, if this is you and you don't want to invest in a course right now (and I recommend that you do if you want to realise everything that photography has to offer for you!), these are some areas to consider:
Light/Exposure: Photography is all about light and a photograph that is either under, or overexposed, is not going to be what you want. This equally applies if the part of the photograph of the greatest interest to you is wrongly exposed.
Focus: It's important to understand your AF system, and how it is deciding what it needs to focus on. If your AF is wrongly set up, you will struggle to get your subject consistently in focus. You might even want to consider using back-button focus.
Shutter speed: A common cause of out-of-focus photographs, understanding shutter speed means that you can introduce, or eliminate, movement in your photograph at will.
Composition: Siting your subject dead-centre in your photograph every time gets very boring very quickly. Using composition techniques, such as the rule of thirds, opens the door to more interesting photographs.
You can learn about all of these techniques, and more, through my online photography course. Please take a look, or share with someone who would like to be a more confident photographer.

I'm using this tagline in some of my promotional material and I thought I would share what it means.
Going beyond that, what inspires you and your photography? Is there a particular photograph you're trying to get, or are you looking to share an aspect of something that you're passionate about with someone else?
Part of my motivation is to sell photographs so that I can contribute to conservation projects that I feel passionate about.
I also want to raise awareness of what's going on with our wildlife and what everyone can do to stop the seemingly inevitable slide into extinction that many iconic animals now face.
I also challenge myself to get the best animal portrait shots that I can, so that the person looking at the photograph gets a sense of the personality of that particular animal.
I also like to take photographs of popular and familiar places that show an aspect that many people miss. And that is my challenge to you, to photograph some aspect of a place you know well, that most people aren't aware of!
I hope you enjoy it!

Being able to control what, within your photograph, is in focus and what isn't, is one of the best ways to create interesting and engaging photographs. How to achieve this is the question I'm asked most often.
So, what do you need to know?
In this podcast I'll take you through the key areas; understanding depth of field, how to set it, how to maintain the correct exposure, and how to use auto-focus effectively.
I'll also suggest a way you can experiment with depth of field so that you can develop a real 'hands-on' feel for it.
I hope you enjoy it.

Animals will often act on instinct and we tend to think of that as their default operating condition. And, for a long time, human beings (homo sapiens) were thought of as being the only intelligent animal around.
But, as we've learnt more about the animals around us, that belief has been challenged. It's now known that many animals exhibit behaviours that go beyond instinct. Many use tools and some even demonstrate behaviours that are more akin to how humans behave.
The purpose of this podcast is to (I hope) get you thinking a little more about what constitutes animal intelligence and to reappraise which animals we should consider to be intelligent.

Understanding the 'modes' on your DSLR or Mirrorless camera allows you to make use of the full potential of your equipment. But which mode is right for you?
In this podcast I'll take you through what are, in my opinion, the two most useful modes for most types of photography; Shutter Speed Priority and Aperture Priority. And the chances are that you'll make use of both of them in different situations.

I was recently asked to suggest a camera for someone who shoots exclusively for social media. While I much prefer to see photographs on a wall, or in a photobook, many photographs will only be seen as social media images.
So what do you need to think about if this applies to you?
That's what I talk about in this podcast.

I'm a big believer that practice makes perfect, but I'm not always disciplined enough to take photographs regularly. This isn't usually a problem for me as I do often use my camera, but, if you're one of those people who puts your camera away until just before that big day, or trip, this might be for you.
My challenge is for you to describe your local area in 12 photographs (or whatever works for you). Imagine yourself as an art director and you are producing a brochure to attract people to where you live. What photographs would you choose?
Think visual storyteller; think composition, viewpoint, lighting, shadow, colour, black and white.
What details do you walk past every day without noticing?
How observant are you?
Treat your local area in the same way that you would treat somewhere new, somewhere you've wanted to visit for a long time!
By building these skills, you'll be able to take much more interesting photographs when you travel.

Do you ever notice that people seem to vanish the moment you suggest showing them your latest photos?
Whether or not you do, these suggestions might help you to rethink your photography.
Think of three photographs that you love. What is it about them that makes them standout? Which elements are common between them?
This might be the use of colour, composition, the use of the foreground, background, or both. Whatever it is, jot it down and start incorporating those elements (and how they've been used) into your photography. See if you can get a different reaction!

I've spoken about the differences between DSLR and Mirrorless cameras in the past and I thought it was time for an update.
You might be thinking about buying your first camera system, or you may have a DSLR system and you're thinking about transitioning to Mirrorless. Wherever you are, I hope this podcast will help.
Previously there were clear differences between the two types of camera, but these have largely gone and most camera manufacturers, with the exception of Pentax, are only developing their Mirrorless cameras and lenses.
So, should you buy Mirrorless? Here are some thing to consider:

Most of us need to apply a little planning before heading off for a wildlife shoot, otherwise our results can be disappointing.
So, what are the best questions to ask yourself before you go?
They will include:
These questions, and more, have a bearing on the available light, how quickly things are likely to happen and how far away you are likely to be. These all dictate the ideal lens you will need, and how you need to get to where you will be shooting.
These are just a few of the things you need to consider. I'll share more in the podcast...

Creating sharp photographs is a basic requirement for most photographers. In this podcast I'll go through a few things to consider if you're not getting the results you want, but first of all, there's something to consider.
Sharp focus is a tool, rather than an end in itself. Just as exposure and composition contribute to the final result, focus can do the same. Compare it to the headline in an article, or book; it draws you in and, if you're sufficiently interested, you'll start to read the rest.
Focus works the same way. The area(s) of you're photograph that are in focus will draw people in. They will then go on to look at the rest of the image (the context of the subject using the 'Visual Storyteller' idea). So it's not necessary for everything to be in sharp focus.
Having said that, these are the 6 areas I discuss:

If you know what you're doing, a short look at a landscape will tell you a lot about what the inhabitants have been doing and who they are.
The term for the evidence left by animals, of their presence, is spoor. This includes dung, footprints and other evidence such as damaged vegetation.
Animal sounds are also very helpful, not just from the animal you're looking for, but alarms calls that come from the animals it preys on if it's a predator.
If you're looking for mammals at sea, such as humpback whales, a 'spout' or 'blow' tells you where the animal is (as will a breach, but that makes it very easy!).
It's also helpful to know something of an animals habits and behaviours if you're trying find one.
Basically, the more you know, the better.
And all of this applies equally to wildlife you might come across at home!

Portrait photography can be very rewarding. For me, a good portrait is one that captures something of the personality and story of the subject. But it isn't as easy as it looks!
Whether you're shooting portraits of an individual, or at an event such as a wedding, and whether you are being paid, or doing it as a favour for someone (or even to build your portfolio), there are a few things to remember that can have a big impact on the final result.

When we start to talk about specialised photography, travel, nature and wildlife are good examples, we often think of Mirrorless and DSLR as being the only options. However, most of us carry a very capable camera with us every day on our smartphone.
In this podcast I talk about what I use my smartphone for when I'm travelling, and a few accessories you might want to consider. If your needs are quite general and the results from a smartphone cover most of them, you might be able to use it as your primary camera.
Some additions to consider are:
The great advantage of a smartphone is that everything will fit into a small pouch.
I mentioned my smartphone course and that's currently available on a 'pay what you feel' basis. You can find out more about the course by visiting the course tour.
Or you can go straight to the course itself here: Discovering Smartphone Photography

Choosing the right lens, or lenses, is obviously important when it comes to creating the photographs you love. So, which lens or lens combination is right for you?
This will depend upon the type of photography you do, and here are some questions to ask:
Should I use a prime lens or a zoom lens?
What is the best focal length, or focal length range?
How much can I afford to spend?
How many prime lenses do I need, or should I switch to a zoom lens?
What are the pros and cons for both types?
In addition, it's helpful to understand how a lens is described. For example, you might come across:
RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM
or
RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM
Which letters and numbers do you need to know (especially if you order lenses online)?
This podcast answers those questions and gives you some other things to consider.

Cheetahs are one of my favourite animals and I know many other people feel the same way.
But, aside from the obvious (i.e. their speed), did you know that there are only 6,500 mature adults thought to be remaining in the wild (from 40,000 in 1960)?
Or, did you know that they almost went extinct 10,000 years ago?

Born in the small town of New Prague, Minnesota, and raised amidst the sun-soaked landscapes of Scottsdale, Arizona, Cory Mortensen embarked on a unique journey that shaped both his life and literary career.
Choosing an unconventional path, his journey began with dropping out of college to immerse himself with a job on Wake Island, gaining valuable experiences that would later infuse his writing with a distinctive perspective. Returning to the United States, he started a dynamic career as a project manager for several prestigious architecture firms, coupled with a venture into real estate by flipping houses.
The allure of exploration took center stage when Cory made the bold decision to sell everything and traverse the globe for two transformative years. This period of travel not only broadened his horizons but also laid the foundation for a successful entrepreneurial endeavor. Cory established and grew a business into a multimillion-dollar venture, eventually selling it to pursue a shared dream with his wife, Kate.
Cory has written three books about his travels. You can find out more by visiting his website: www.thebuddhaandthebee.com

Many of us grew up in a culture where it's not OK to fail. However, the most valuable lessons we can learn often come from failure.
When it comes to creative activities, an apparent failure can lead to a complete change of style and direction.
The purpose of this podcast is to encourage you to 'fail' regularly in your photography and to see where these failures take you. Embrace 'failure', don't fear it!

I realised a couple of months ago that I was on track to record 100 podcasts!
The first thing for me to do is to acknowledge and thank you for the support you have given me. I hope you've found them helpful, or, at least, thought-provoking.
I wanted to do something different this time and I've been mulling it over for the last two weeks. In the end, I decided to share my reasons for starting the podcast and some of the stories from my travels.
I also wanted to share a few of the most important aspects (to me) of wildlife and adventure photography. I hope you enjoy it.

The use of space in a photograph has a big impact on the message you are trying to convey to the viewer.
Using the Visual Storyteller approach, you can use your composition to convey a feeling or story that you wish to share with them. This might be the context (the environment) where your subject lives, a feeling of size or significance, or to imply that something has happened, or is about to happen.
How you use space has a big impact on how your viewer with connect with your photograph. I like to think that the longer someone spends looking at a photograph, the stronger the connection they will feel to it, and the subject.

India is an amazing place and I have a love/hate relationship with it: I love the country, the people and the culture, but I hate the bureaucracy.
I thought I would share a little a little of my experience there and why I love it. I've also included some tips that should help you if you are planning a visit.
If you can, I recommend that you spend 10 days or so in a wildlife park (I assume wildlife, and probably tigers, will be one of your reasons for going as you're listening to this podcast) and then allow more time to visit other parts of the country.
Always make sure that you have the necessary vaccinations and that you have the appropriate travel insurance (if you're going off the beaten track, your standard insurance might not cover you).
Final recommendation; use the same airline for internal flights connecting to international flights on the same day.

If you're new to photography (and I'm talking about DSLR and Mirrorless photography primarily), the equipment and settings can be quite daunting. So where to start?
In this podcast I'll take you through what I believe to be the most important considerations for your kit; camera body and lenses, and how to quickly get on top of the 'techy' part.
What is the "exposure triangle" and what do you need to know, and why?
I'll talk you through what you need to know about 'Aperture', 'Shutter Speed', and 'ISO' and how each one impacts your final photograph.
As always, I recommend that you take a training course if you can. A face to face course is likely to get you the best results, if one is available. If you don't have that option, check out on line courses to see if there's one for you. Make sure that:

This podcast was recorded in December 2023 and I find this a valuable time (at the end of the year) to look back on what I've achieved and look forward to the new year.
So, how was 2023 for you?
Did you make progress, or are you not where you hoped to be?
I find that we often tend to focus on what went wrong, rather than what we've achieved. So what have you achieved in the last 12 months and what should you give yourself a pat on the back for?
And, with a new year ahead of us, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?
One challenge for many people is keeping the momentum going, especially once the holiday season is over. So what can you do to keep your photography alive once you return to your normal day-to-day? Here are some suggestions:
Look for sources of inspiration; Instagram, photography awards, books... there is a lot of great work out there.
And... don't forget to make something of your favourite photographs from 2023. How about wall prints, or a photobook (you can have extra copies made to share with others).
What else can you do to make 2024 a great year for you?

Older listeners may remember Chris Bonington; famous as a British mountaineer. Joe is his son and I first met him while training for my Kilimanjaro climb.
Joe ran a physical gym on Sydney's northern beaches. He would train and coach people who were planning major exhibitions (including attempts on Mount Everest). As well as the physical training, Joe would step back and coach the mental requirements needed to successfully participate in extreme events.
Joe has since made his expertise available to people around the world by putting his training on line. You can find out more by checking out his website: http://www.joesbasecamp.com.
In this podcast Joe shares his thoughts on tackling 'extreme' events and shares some of his stories.

What I mean by mood is how a particular image makes you feel. Good photographers will compose their images to suggest, or to invoke, a certain mood in the viewer with their image.
If this is something you would like to do, where to you start?
In this podcast I'll make some suggestions about how you can take the viewer towards a certain mood when they view your work. Key things to consider are:
And how these can be brought together to invoke a certain outcome.

I only spent a brief time in Botswana as I travelled between volunteer projects in South Africa and Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls). However, Botswana proved to be a treat.
I visited the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park. The best time to visit is the dry season; from June until the end of October, as animals tend to get water from the rivers.
Unfortunately I visited the country at the end of January and it had been very wet. This meant that the wildlife was scattered throughout the very green countryside. That said, we had a few pleasant surprises when wildlife appeared by the side of the highway we were on!

Camera equipment has a deserved reputation for being quite expensive, but is it necessary to spend a lot of money to get the equipment most appropriate for your style of photography?
Todays smartphones are very capable and can be even more flexible with a few additions.
Or, will a basic DSLR or Mirrorless setup give you everything you need without the price tag?
A little planning before you buy can save you a lot of money if you ask the right questions.

Uganda probably isn't at the top of your list of places to go to see African wildlife, unless you hope to see mountain gorillas.
Uganda and Rwanda are the best places to see mountain gorillas and I spend a couple of weeks in Uganda in 2022. Uganda boasts a variety of wildlife and offers good value. It's definitely worth considering, but there are a few things you need to be aware of.

The ongoing debate between DSLR and Mirrorless cameras and which is best, continues. Buying your first camera is a big investment, so what do you need to think about and which is best for you?
I've spoken about this subject before in the context of wildlife photography. This may or may not apply to you and I thought it was time to record something more general.
In short, most camera manufacturers have stopped investing in DSLR equipment and have moved over to Mirrorless cameras. This means that some of the advantages of DSLR cameras are reducing and it's fair to say that Mirrorless is probably the best choice for most people.
But there are things to consider when it comes to deciding which camera is best for you.

Sooner or later, most of us will experience something going wrong when we travel. It might be a missed flight that leaves us stranded, or a vital piece of equipment might get damaged - I'm particularly thinking about photographers here.

A few questions come up fairly regularly, so I thought I would provide some answers to them. These are the questions:

Having lived in Sydney, I'm bound to be a little biased. But it definitely is one of my favourite places.
From a nature and wildlife perspective, Sydney has access to great national parks and bushwalks, and, of course, humpback whales for six months of the year.
If you like history, it offers museums that are on a par with many European and US exhibitions, many of which have regular speaking guests and temporary exhibitions. (And I recommend "The Fatal Shore" by Robert Hughes if you're interested in the history of the early European settlement.)
It is also home to two of the structures that define Australia; the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
If you're thinking about going, give it a go!

I was shocked to find that these iconic animals are another species facing extinction. They are found in southern and eastern Africa and many of the remaining animals live in protected areas.
There are three species of zebra; the plains zebra, Grevy's zebra and the mountain zebra, plus subspecies.
In this podcast, I'll talk about how to differentiate between them, and their lifestyle and habits. I'll talk about predators and, of course, their stripes!

Whether you want to practice before a big trip, or you want to explore the wildlife where you live, you'll find there is a lot of wildlife wherever you live.
You might be fortunate to live in the country and there are obvious subjects you can photograph. But have you thought about the 'micro' world that is around you?
What dramas take place everyday that go unseen by most people. What stories can you tell, visually, that open up the natural world that surrounds us all?
In this podcast I take a look at how almost everyone can find 'wild' subjects and develop their photography, and storytelling, skills.

I find the countryside of Namibia to be stunning and it was a place I'd wanted to visit for a long time. I got my wish at the end of 2019 when I volunteered with EHRA.
Namibia has the least rainfall of any sub-Saharan country and has some amazing attractions. These include the huge sand dunes along the Skeleton Coast, Etosha National Park, and (of course) the wildlife.
I spend a week or so in Swakopmond, on the coast, and enjoyed my time there. I was volunteering with EHRA who spend one week per fortnight tracking the local population of African Desert Elephants in the wild. This allows them to check their health and to see where they are going (and help the local people to live in harmony with them).
I mention that Namibia has a population of approximately 2.25 million and an area of roughly 825,000 sq kilometers. By comparison, France has an area of 551,000 squ km and Alaska an area of 1.72 million squ km (making Namibia roughly half the size).
If you would like to know more about the elephants, and maybe get involved in supporting EHRA, I recommend their website: ehranamibia.org

I've been photographing humpback whales since 1993. My first experience was while volunteering with Curt and Mich Jenner on Enderby Island where they were trying to find the mating and calving grounds of the western population of humpback whales.
Since then I've been lucky enough to live in both Perth and Sydney, both of which witness and annual humpback whale migration.
In this podcast I walk about some of my experiences with whales, and give you some facts and figures to help understand them.
Humpback whales make up the majority of the photographs in my "Wild Earth" collection. The revised collection will be launched at the end of June 2023.

I thought I would share with you the top places I've been to, places that I would like to visit again.
The first of these is Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls is a place I've wanted to visit for a long time and it didn't disappoint. It's located in northwest Zimbabwe on the border with Zambia.
Zimbabwe has had a tough time in recent years, yet was once home to one of the early civilisations of the world; Great Zimbabwe. This was founded by the Bantu people in the iron age and their descendants, the Shona people, form around 80% of the current population (15 million people).
This part of Africa is full of wildlife and the town of Victoria Falls is on one of their migration routes. I saw baboons and warthogs regularly and it's not unusual to see an elephant walking down the main road of the town.

One of the things that interests me the most about wildlife is learning about their habits and behaviours.
In this new series, I'll be talking about animals in my fine art photography collections and trying to fill in their stories.
I've deliberately started with elephants as I've spent more time with them than with any other animal (other than humpback whales). In addition to a number of elephant photographs in my collections, I've also put together a couple of photobooks about them.
I hope you find the podcast interesting (and apologies for anything I managed to miss out!).

This is one for photographers!
I talk a lot about shooting in RAW, but what do you need to know if you've only shot JPG files?
I'll take you through a few things in this podcast:
I'll also briefly talk through my editing process using Photoshop.
Switching to RAW can feel like a big step if you've never used it before. However, there is a huge difference in the quality of RAW and TIFF files when compared to JPG files.
So, if you've ever taken a great photograph but have been disappointed with the quality (and resolution), switching to RAW will transform your photography.

Well, we all have one!
When the COVID lockdowns started in March 2020, I was technically homeless and volunteering in Mozambique. At the time, none of this made me feel optimistic about my chances of an easy trip 'home'.
I had sold my home in Sydney and had decided to spend a few months with volunteer projects on my way to setting up a new home in France. I was planning to move using my British passport before the Brexit cut-off at the end of 2020 came into effect.
Having set up a plan that gave me enough time to do what I needed to do, COVID rather spoilt my plans (as I know it did for millions of others).
For what it's worth, this is my story. I'm grateful to the people who helped me out and who were rooting for me!

I'm a big believer in seeing new places through the eyes of a volunteer. Unfortunately there can be drawbacks and not all projects are 'as advertised' when you arrive.
In this podcast I share my experience of such a project when I visited Mozambique, and talk about a few positives too. Of course, there are always stories regardless of where you go and how closely the experience matches your expectations!

The discussion about which is best; DSLR or Mirrorless cameras, still continues. In this podcast I compare similar cameras to try to give you the right questions to ask when choosing between the two.
It really comes down to what you need for your type of photography, or at least for 90% of it.
Mirrorless cameras have certain advantages:
But so do DSLR's:
What it comes down to is what is important to you? If you're new to photography, you might want to experiment with a lower cost DSLR and/or Mirrorless camera and hold off from making a larger investment until you are clear about what you need in your system.
For my wildlife photography, I sometimes have to walk for several hours, sometimes over difficult terrain. This makes size and weight an issue.
I also like to have two camera bodies with me; as back up in case one of them goes wrong, and to allow me to switch between telephoto and wide angle setups very quickly.
I hope you'll get some useful pointers from listening to this podcast.

I often talk about finding inspiration for your photography, but where can you find it?
There are several ways I find inspiration. One is through social media such as Instagram (where I post every day). You can do a # search for a particular subject (e.g. #wildlife) and click on images you like. This will give you the photographers page, who you might choose to follow, and you can see which # they are using for their posts.
Another source is to join group photography sessions, be it a photo walk or a seminar or webinar.
Even simpler, rotate your camera 90 degrees and change your angle!
And don't forget post-processing. Always start with the end in mind and remember that post-processing is an important aspect of creative photography.

Going on a wildlife photography trip is very exciting (for me anyway, and I hope for you too). While it's easy to concentrate on your camera equipment, knowing what else to take is very important too.
This podcasts runs through a few things to think about before you go. I'll talk about the camera equipment I usually have with me, what's important and what is less so, and what I never leave home without.
I'll also talk about clothing, vaccinations and documentation. These are all important if you're going to have a great experience.

This is a question that I see quite regularly. The short answer is yes, but there are a couple of caveats. The first is what kind of photography are you doing (and what you want to do with your final images), and the second comes back to that 'twelve inches' behind the viewfinder.
All cameras are tools, the smartphone camera is just one variation. So how well are you able to use the tools that you have? This comes down to knowing the camera and what it's capable (and not capable) of. It's also about understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the format.
To me, the advantages are its' size, its' unobtrusiveness, and its' ability to get into quite cramped spaces.
The disadvantages are limited lens options (although I'll talk about that) and the inability (of most smartphone cameras) to shoot in RAW.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for you? You'll have to answer that yourself.
One source of inspiration is my colleague at WeAreObservers in Sydney, Colin Wynter Seton. He has a couple of Instagram pages and I suggest you take a look at them to see what's possible. The links are:

Photography is an ideal medium to share our passions and ideas. But, in many cases, people hold back for fear of negative comments about their work.
In this podcast I dive (a little) into our psychology and why it's so important to share your passions:
Out fear of 'shame', or 'rejection' is driven by a fear of not belonging. This is why many people don't share their work.
On the other hand, sharing photographs that you love is a way of connecting with others, of sharing what inspires you and forming a deeper connection with others.
So what happens if people criticise or don't like your work? The thing to remember is that once you've put your work out there, anything can happen!
Negative comments are often more about the people that made them than the work itself. You might also get positive feedback (and have to deal with it!) and comments that give you ideas.
Putting your work out there makes you vulnerable. But allowing yourself to be vulnerable is an important way of growing (both in your photography and personally) and I whole heartedly recommend it.

I recently read that, for the first time in decades, Eastman Kodak have started recruiting technicians. It seems that a new generation is discovering film and the creative options it offers.
If you have never used a film camera, and you're interested in knowing more, I hope this podcast will help.
The operation of the camera is slightly different. Obviously the film needs to be loaded and removed and in many cameras the film speed must be manually set (some read the barcode on the film canister). In-built light meters will be different to what you're used to on DSLR's and most SLR's didn't use auto-focus.
I'll talk about these aspects and the elephant in the room; the film itself.
I'll try to give you some insights into these questions in this podcast.
And, if you like this podcast, I;d be grateful if you would let other people know about it.

I've spoken about wildlife photography a few times and thought it was worth looking at some of the common problems and misconceptions that people have. These include:
Animals will just be there waiting to be photographed.
A great camera will automatically give you great shots.
They don't do any research.
They use the wrong shutter speed and/or ISO for the shot they're going for.
Their pictures are out of focus.
They are not ready when something happens.
The subject is too small or too far away.
They don't think about composition; what's the context or story?

Mental health problems may be more widespread than you realise (they certainly are more widespread than I had thought). I have a background in coaching and personality profiling, as well as several decades in a corporate environment. I firmly believe that photography can be an important tool in helping people to find meaning in their lives.
This podcast was inspired by a TED talk given by Johann Hari in 2019. It reminded me of several initiatives I ran last year (2021) and underlined one of the reasons for introducing my Patreon membership programme earlier this month. The obvious answer is wherever the wildlife is! However, there's a little more to it if you want to shoot photographs you love when you visit wildlife.
In this podcast I'll give you some tips about how to prepare for your wildlife trip (or adventure!). What can you do if you don't have easy access to elephants, tigers, whales, or whatever animal it is that you want to photograph?
The answer is... quite a lot! That's because it's less about gaining access to wildlife to practice with, that being prepared by knowing what you want as a result and how to get it with the equipment you have. The most important part of your camera 'system' is you and that's what we'll be looking at.

So, you've bought a new camera and the "M" on the mode control keeps beckoning to you.
Or you might be contemplating the unthinkable and take the camera out of "Auto"!
Some people think that professionals only use their cameras in Manual, or that you need to use Manual to be considered a good photographer. None of that, of course, is true.
However, understanding the modes on your camera (and where Manual sits for your style of photography) will help you to get the most from both your camera and your photography.

I find climate change a difficult subject. There is mounting evidence of the severity of the situation and it's easy to feel helpless and that there's nothing we can do about it.
In this podcast we look at the realities of climate change in the Kisoro area of southwest Uganda. We also talk about what can be done about it, and what you can do personally.
Climate change is one of those problems that requires everyone to take steps to minimise the damage it is causing. That might involve contributing money to the various projects and organisations that are doing what they can, but many of us are facing significant economic issues too.
So what are the steps you can take? The simplest answer is to look at what you are consuming and minimise what you can. Also look at repairing and reusing what you can. Consider buying second hand, or keeping things for longer. One of the biggest contributors to our current problems is the clothing industry and yet it seems to fly under the radar.
It might feel that you can't make much of a difference on your own, and that might be true. But remember, you're either part of the problem or part of the solution! It's time to make a choice.
If you would like to know more about Sandra Gray's work, or even get involved with what she is doing, please send me an email at [email protected].

I'm often asked what gear I use, or what's the best gear for photographing wildlife. As usual it depends upon what outcome you are looking for. However, I have a few suggestions for you and the questions you should be asking before you buy any new equipment.
What are you planning to shoot?
What will the light be like?
Should you take a flash?
I cover these and other questions in this podcast.

I believe that most people trying to progress a dream, whether as a job or to fulfill a passion, hit road blocks from time to time. This has certainly been the case for Sandra Gray who began her career as a nurse but decided she wanted to do animal research in Africa.
Getting qualified and getting out to Africa (and a genuine field placement) were big challenges, but she's then had to keep the research going for a little known species in an area where the odds were stacked against her.
Things have finally started going right (although she is a long way from the 'finish line') but it's taken a huge amount of dedication and commitment to get this far.
In this podcast, she talks about what keeps her going and where her journey so far has taken her.

I've spoken before about what to do with photographs once you've shot them. For me, one of the best things you can do is to create a photobook.
It might only be for you, or you might create is as a gift. Alternatively, it might be something you want to sell.
In this podcast I talk about a few things you can think about, ideally before you even start shooting.
These include who is it for? What's its purpose? What's the story? What's the best layout to use?
I hope it gives you some ideas.

Sandra Gray has been studying golden monkeys in Uganda since 2009. In this podcast she shares what it's like to be involved in long term research of a species and how doing this research has greatly improved our understanding of both the monkeys and their environment.
She also talks about how she works with other scientists and researchers in Rwanda and the Congo and how this knowledge has changed the way the animals are protected.

In 1997 I moved to Australia. Rather than just get a job and trade one view (in the UK) for another, I decided to take time out and ride around the continent. I'd got my full motorcycle license in the UK 6 months earlier riding 125cc motorbikes.
Once I got to Brisbane I started doing my research, and bought a 900cc shaft drive Yamaha Diversion. I'll tell you more in part 1 of this 3 part podcast.

When we think of wildlife conservation, most people think about the animals. However, there are two other factors that play a vital role.
One of them is environment and most people are aware that saving their environment is vital for wildlife conservation.
A less recognised aspect is the people. Here I'm talking about the local people. How do they feel about the animals? What is the reality of their day to day experience and how does this set a good foundation for those with no interest in wildlife conservation.

I often see people on Instagram and elsewhere asking for opinions on whether a photograph looks better in colour or black and white.
In this podcast I talk about a few things to think about when making a choice and why you might prefer one over the other.

If you're using a DSLR or a Mirrorless camera, there are two things that, if you understand them, are the key to getting the most from your camera in any situation.
In previous podcasts I've spoken about being prepared to take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself, but how can you do that? If you understand how these two aspects of the camera work, you'll be able to react fast and get good photographs in most situations.

If you haven't done it before, it's very easy to approach your first wildlife shoot with some pretty unrealistic expectations. In this podcast I'll take you through a few of the realities and what you can do about them.
The most important things you can do are to really understand what your camera equipment is capable of (it's your primary tool) and to approach the shoot with an open mind (be ready to grab whatever opportunities arise!).

Wildlife photography can make a huge contribution to wildlife conservation and education. Unfortunately some photographers engage in unethical practices, either unknowingly or deliberately, and these can have a very negative effect on the animals we photograph.
This podcast runs through eight common areas where the ethics of the photographer might come into question.
This is an important issue for me personally as preserving wildlife and the environment are central to Graham Elliott Photography as an idea and as an organisation.
"Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time."

I love history and I talk about what I loved about visiting the ancient Roman port of Ephesus in Turkey in 2013.
I also talk about what I look for when I visit new places, and when I walk around where I live. What's the story of your home town and how can you tell it in photographs?

Have you ever taken a great photograph only to find that something's going on in the background that you hadn't noticed (or want in the final shot)? Or maybe your photographs tend to look bland and uninteresting.
Whatever might be dampening your enthusiasm for photography, there's a simple approach you can use that will greatly increase your chances of shooting great photographs.
It's all in the approach. In this podcast I talk about why I believe you should stop thinking of yourself as a "photographer" and become a "visual storyteller".

Planning for a photography project that is off the beaten track involves more than simply picking the best flight.
There are various aspects to consider; documentation (passports, visas, etc), health (which vaccines and certificates are required), insurance (standard insurance often won't cover you) and personal safety.
This is before you start thinking about what equipment to take with you.
In this podcast I talk through the things I consider when I start planning a photography trip to more remote areas.

The Bengal Tiger is the largest species of tiger and the good news is that in some locations they are making a comeback. One of these is Kanha, in central India. The people managing conservation efforts there have recognised the importance of having the local people buy-in to what is happening in the reserve. These are their tigers and they will protect them from poaching and other threats.
This approach is endorsed by the gradual increase in tiger numbers in the reserve. This is especially important as only a few thousand tigers remain worldwide (from over 100,000 at the start of the 20th century) and some sub-species are now extinct.

Never one to miss an opportunity, I decided to make the most of my time in Tanzania after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The Ngorongoro crater and the the surrounding national park are rich in wildlife and a wildlife photographer's dream!
I was also able to visit Olduvai Gorge where some of the earliest hominid remains have been found. These are believed to be the ancestors of our species. Olduvai Gorge may be where our species originated.

I grew up while the moon landings were taking place and a part of me always wanted to be an astronaut. I’ve flown light aircraft (and tried flying a helicopter) and leapt at the opportunity to fly a twin cockpit supersonic MiG 25 up to 80,000 feet.
While not quite space, I could see the curvature of the earth and that most of the atmosphere was below me; the sky above was completely black.
In this podcast, I tell you more.

The Chobe River in Botswana is a fantastic place to visit and has a wide variety of wildlife. There is also the opportunity for some interesting encounters and some encounters might be a little more than bargained for!
I only had a couple of days on the river but had some of my most memorable wildlife encounters there. I’ll tell you more about them in this podcast.

This is the second part of my podcast about diving to the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 2001. In this episode, I talk about the dive.
I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity. More people have been into space than to the ocean floor and the chances are that deep-sea exploration will be left to remote vehicles.

I’ve been fascinated by the sinking of the RMS Titanic since I was a boy and clearly remember my excitement when the wreck was finally located.
In 2001 I was fortunate enough to be able to go on the first dive of the season to see the famous ship myself. In this podcast, I talk about the first part of my experience including the pre-dive preparation.

Back in 1993, I took part in my first project as a volunteer. I was fortunate enough to volunteer with Kurt and Mich Jenner off the west coast of Australia.
In this podcast, I share some of that experience. I’m a strong believer in volunteering for wildlife projects for several reasons:
I’ll leave it to you to decide for yourself. I hope you enjoy the podcast.

When I've travelled to photograph wildlife, whether on land or at sea, I've been in an unfamiliar environment.
However, if you know how to read the signs, every landscape tells its own story. So, just as you can probably find your way around your local town, and by extension other towns, because you know what to look for to get to where you're going, the signs are there in wild environments too.
In this podcast I share some of what I've learned about tracking animals and what those signs tell me about the animals I'm tracking.

Having volunteered several times now I consider myself an advocate. Volunteering is a great way to play an active role in conservation. If you're working with wildlife you get far better access to the animals than regular safaris offer. You're also likely to find out much more about the realities of wildlife conservation.
In this episode, I talk about my experience volunteering at the Nakavango Conservation Programme in Zimbabwe. This has been my favourite volunteering experience (on land) to date and I found that I didn't know as much as I thought about the best methods of conservation.

Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) is a project dedicated to helping the population of African Desert Elephants in northern Namibia both survive and live harmoniously with the local population.
I spent a couple of weeks with this project at the end of 2019. I've volunteered with other projects and one of the advantages of this approach is the unprecedented access to animals they offer.
This is one of the projects I am supporting through sales of my fine art wildlife photographs.
