Recovery can bring up some unexpected feelings, including grief. Even though binge eating is ultimately a harmful behavior, you may still experience a sense of loss as you let it go, and you may also grieve the time you lost to the eating disorder. As you go through this, it can be helpful to cultivate thoughts and feelings of gratitude to soften the grief, and to keep you moving in the direction of freedom from the struggle with food. Life inevitably involves loss, and some lessons learned from recovery about both grief and gratitude can help you in many other areas as you move forward.

Physical hunger and fullness signals aren’t the only driver of eating. We also have what I’m calling “stop and go signals” which are primarily thoughts, but also feelings and sensations that encourage us to eat or stop eating that are independent of physical hunger and fullness cues. In this episode, you’ll learn to understand and react to these signals in a way that moves you toward recovery and a healthy relationship with food.

The goal in recovery is to avoid binges, but that usually doesn’t happen 100 percent of the time as you are learning to eat normally and dismiss urges to binge. If you’ve read Brain over Binge, you know how problematic cereal was for me during my dieting and binge eating days. But now, many years after recovery, I don’t eat much cereal at all, and it’s not a struggle to avoid it. I never would have believed that this was possible when I was bulimic, because cereal seemed to control me. Marijuana often has the effect of stimulating appetite and enhancing the pleasure of food, and in some cases, the “munchies” can look and feel like binge eating episodes. My boyfriend Jeff returned to the show, and we explored the connection between marijuana use, overeating, and binge eating. The term “binge” has become popular in describing any behavior that seems excessive. The increasingly common use of this term can cause people to label too many eating behaviors as bingeing. In this episode, I talk about why it’s important in recovery to be able to differentiate your binges from overeating or overindulging, and I also tell you about an upcoming free online class (with Cookie Rosenblum) that I hope will help with whatever eating issues affect you.

Elisa Oras shares her experience with intermittent fasting behaviors. She engaged in fasting before it was a mainstream and popular dieting trend, and it led to food obsessions, extreme hunger, and ultimately to disordered eating and bulimia.
I understand that many people want to engage fasting for health reasons; however, putting the body in a food-deprived state isn’t conducive to recovery from binge eating. Ultimately, you have to decide what is right for you (and consult with your doctor or nutritionist for health advice), but I want you to be aware of some of risks of fasting behaviors.

In this episode, you’ll learn that there are two parts of your brain at work in binge eating and recovery. The lower brain (also called the primitive or animal brain) produces the urges to binge, and the higher brain (also called the rational or human brain) gives you the capacity to stop acting on those urges.
