What do you have planned for your equestrian adventures in 2023? Exploring a new country on an equestrian adventure is growing in popularity as a unique and alternative way to see the land. Whether your equestrian adventure is taking you to the countryside or coastline from the back of a horse is the best way to experience it. Equestrian adventures are not only for experienced riders, many options are now available for beginners, with a combination of lessons and guided treks. When you combine horses, travel, and adventures your trifecta of passions indeed comes together.
Horse adventures don't always need to be epic but also commonplace and short. It really is the spirit that counts. Rather than always dream about your future long ride, maybe go for a small adventure with your horse. Do a day ride, visit a friend or ride to a restaurant. All of these adventures do not need a lot of preparation, time and training but can be done on a day or a week-end. Surprisingly, most people never think of doing something like this. Today I want to inspire you to do all these small, everyday adventures which are everything but small but in the true Equestrian Adventuresses's spirit!

Horses play an important role in almost all cultures around the world, ancient as well as modern. In mythology they are usually depicted as powerful animals, associated with the gods or the spirit realm. Shamans often used them to travel to the otherworld and they serve as symbols of power, faith or the divine. In northern mythology horses have been associated with the gods and their names and deeds recorded in the Eddas. The most famous horse is of course Odin's eight-legged Sleipnir, the best of the horses but there are many more.

Horses are powerful animals but there is a limit to how much weight they can carry on their backs. Despite extensive studies, this is still a heated debate and different arguments are put forth. Fact is, horses were not meant to carry people on their backs so we need to prepare and train them for this task. Burdening them with excessive weight for a long time can lead to damage of their tendons, bones and joints. What is too much weight and how can be help our horses carry us? The fall hunts, a tradition dating back almost 500 years. The British were the original group that started this tradition of riding horseback while hounds chased down the foxes who were killing the livestock. Now in current times, the annual fall hunts have changed from actually hunting a fox to more of an opportunity for like-minded friends to get together with their horses for an afternoon of riding. Many traditions still exist from the early days of what clothing attire is required, the style of riding, and the files of the field. Fall hunts are a great way to enjoy an afternoon of field cantering and cross country jumping before the winter snow takes over.

Why do you ride bareback? Is it so you can really feel your horse move or do you do it because you are too lazy to put the saddle on? That is the question we are asking in the podcast. Bareback horse riding came first. Long before the invention of the saddle, man was riding his horses bareback. Truth be known, when it comes to horse and rider, a saddle is not a necessity, but merely a handy tool of convenience. Bareback horse riding is arguable, the fastest way to develop your skill as a rider. Many riders use their saddle and their reins as a crutch. Humans tend to be rather lazy creatures. We won’t learn anything unless we have to, and that goes for balance as well. It’s only natural for a rider to take advantage of the stirrups and the saddle horn that sits so conveniently at their disposal.

Today our podcast travels to Indonesia, to the tiny group of the Gili Islands, situated North of Lombok and East of Bali. Indonesia has a few native pony breeds which is unusual for a tropical island nation. Horses have always played an important economic as well as religious role in Indonesia and especially so on the Gili Islands, as they have banned all motorised vehicles. So pony carts are the main way of transportation there. At the same time the odds are striking, no natural sweet water source, very little grass and few skilled vets or farriers. Add Corona and suddenly the situation gets really bad for most of the ponies and their owners.
I am talking with Tori Taylor, an American who made the Gili Islands her home and as a veterinary technician, is predestined to help the ponies. She has founded the NGO Horses of Gili and helps to feed and care for them. Additionally she has started to teach local kids riding on rescue ponies, all in the middle of the Corona pandemic.

Another episode of our Horse Breeds around the World Series. Today we turn our attention towards South-Eastern Europe which is home to a little known horse breed, the Bosnian Mountain Horse. These small horses are sure-footed, tough and can carry heavy loads up and down their rugged home of the Dinaric Alps. Today there is little use for horses, except in the remote villages, so the Bosnian Mountain Horse is disappearing in its home countries of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Croatia and Montenegro.
However, people all over the world have recognised the potential of this horse breed as trail and leisure horse and there are some efforts in breeding and popularising the breed again. Above all, it is important to let people know about it and establish Bosnia-Herzegovina and the other countries of the Balkans firmly as horse tourism destination. I am talking today with Zorica Bucinak, a Slovenian horse lover and rider, who fell in love with the breed.

Can you ever really have too much horse equipment or tack? In today's episode, Heather discusses some pros and cons of both fly and rain sheets. The first question you need to ask when looking at horse equipment is, does my horse really need this? Well of course they do they're our pets, lol. Horse equipment needs to have a purpose to justify the purchase so make sure it fits correctly and will give you the protection you are looking for. Things like wither protection, tail cover, and good leg straps are important when looking at a sheet. Keep in mind that horses can be very hard on sheets and the material isn't really designed for abusive use. Fly sheets only usually survive one season if you can get two bravoes. Rain sheets are usually a little more durable so you may get a few more years from them.

It's that time of year again when we need to look at Equine vaccines. Today's episode will help guide you through equine vaccines and help you plan the best protection for your horse. The number one way to do this is through an effective equine vaccine program. Equine vaccines are essential to keep your horse healthy—and in some cases, alive—for the long run.
