#FDNHPodcast is an in depth discussion with equestrian trainers and professionals dedicated to making horse training happen for the horse not to the horse. We discuss how to reduce harm in our horses training environment and how to support our horses mental, emotional and physical well being so that we have horses that enjoy learning and ask to be ridden.
Each episode we discuss the different influences equestrians can have and how we can improve our horses overall athleticism, soundness of mind and body and emotional fortitude whilst strengthening and deepening our relationship.
The podcast First Do No Harm is created by Katie Boniface. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).

Over the coming months there will be some changes at equestrian movement.
The big one is, I'm pregnant! So I will be having term 3 off for maternity leave. As a result Sarah and I are trying to wrangle this beast that is equestrian movement and downsize our work.
What this means for you:
- The podcast will be changing from weekly to fortnightly
- Equestrian movement will be getting rebranded under the face to face school branding of equestrian spirit.
- Therefore there will be changes to email addresses, websites and socials
- There won't be any live trainings this year (ie webinars, coaching, live coaching support through the programs)
- Sarah and I will be revisiting these decisions next year to see if there will be any live coaching next year.
Please reach out if you have any questions or need further support through this transition at
In this episode we discuss the fine line of balancing eustress and distress, creating emotional resilience in our horses and creating intentional lesson plans that see our horses fitter, sounder and healthier for their work with us.

Science, Empathy & Feel. All together complimenting each other. Drawing on the immense wealth of research and logic in these three modalities my horses, my clients and I are sculpting a "Middle Path" of horse training which avoids extreme binaries. You know what binaries are: R+ versus R-. Classical versus Western. Etc. We avoid that and opt for a middle path that is inclusive of all. Creating unique training techniques that are simple to follow and kind to the horse. If you wish to use food reward, you can. If you don't, you don't have to. What we don't use is dominance or escalating pressure. The goal? A performance relationship with your horse that is effortless, inspiring and enjoyable. Emotional horsemanship serves private horse owners who wish to have life long bonds with their horses, versatile and adaptable equine athletes who enjoy tackling a variety of tasks. Recently, a lot of professionals have engaged in Emotional Horsemanship as they are curious about it and/or needed private support behind the scenes of their own equine professional activities. The pre-requisite? To be deeply caring and open minded.

A mantra in our school is to stop on a positive note feeling like you could've done more. As type A achiever equestrians we tend to feel something amazing when riding and keep chasing that feeling. I want it again, I want it more, I want it better!! However, quite often what we are feeling is our horses best effort. If we don't stop and reward for effort and drill for perfect behaviours our horse will go sour at best and get frustrated and throw dangerous behaviours at worst.
In this episode we will talk about how to bring down a shaping plan so that we are rewarding for effort and setting our horse up for success, not only today but in the rides moving forwards.

Are you reacting or responding to your horse? Are you giving your horse the space they need to process their internal experience of you, their environment and their training? As we learn more about the brain and the nervous system we can start to understand that even though we are doing everything "right" in training, because we are working with a living, emotive being, how we are in relationship to each other plays a critical role to our success with our horse.
Some things are physical skills required to develop: balance, coordination, cuing of aids and application of the body in movement. And some of the things are who we are and who our horse is in relationship to us. We could do a physical skill perfectly and our horse can choose to say no. We can fudge and muddle our way through the application of an ask and our horse can say yes.
Timing is about knowing when to ask. When is the nervous system up and receptive to the ask. And when to back off. The nervous system has blocked us out or deemed us as a threat and the horse needs space to process and navigate this internal response to us.

Are submission and willingness the same?
No!
But in the long-standing horse industry we all try to work in, there is a lot of confusion as people use the words interchangeably. We first need to ask ourselves, if the horse was given the option without pressure, would they still participate?
In the latest episode of the First Do No Harm Podcast, we talk about submission, willingness, and a new phrase “congruence”.

Does your horse seek you for direction?
If you are a leader worth following, your horse will seek your direction and ask “what's next”? But in a world of submission and dominance training, our horses can’t see us as a leader worth following, but a bully and someone who disregards their need - even if that isn’t our intention.
In the latest episode of the First Do No Harm Podcast, “Connected Leadership in Horse Training”, I share some of the self- ruling principles that allow us to ALWAYs show up for your horse as a compassionate leader.

Clear is kind and clear is communication.
Do you have a clear, intentional and strategic way of not only communicating with your horse but also your horse communicating its needs with you? This is the challenge of training. Intentional shaping plans that create vocabulary with our horses that layer into the complex skills. When you keep changing how you are going to teach that language you will never progress because your horse will keep getting confused about what you want and lose confidence in you. Communication and strategic layering of cues is the third pillar of holistic horse handling. Check out our free connection training: https://www.equestrianmovement.com/connection
Is your horse being naughty, pushing you around and being disrespectful? Even though I grew up in a world of power battles and being taught to be scarier than the thing your horse is scared of, it is a conversation most people won't win, especially beginner to intermediate riders AND its not a very pleasant conversation to have to be continuously engaging in with your horse. We prefer to consider instead our compassionate leadership skills. Respect isn't demanded of the horse. It is a display of the quality of relationship that you and your horse have. It is the result of developing psychological safety, looking for congruence, seeking team work to make the dream work. Often as horse riders and trainers when we come across a problem we can be told to just show them who's boss and make the horse do it, but is that really how we fix these issues? It doesn't factor in why the horse is saying no and assuming all no's are a challenge to our authority. And going even deeper, that challenging our authority is a bad thing. It doesn't factor in if the no is stemming from pain, they don't understand, they can't do what we are asking of them, they need a break or to finish, or if we are overfacing ourselves or the horse. In this episode we talk about what I teach my students instead.

There have been a few times in my riding career where I've started to think wow I'm actually starting to get good at this. Only to be firmly put back in my place by a or many horses. Confidence in our ability to get our horses to do what we want results in power over, submission based training and rules out the potential for our horse to have choice and consent what is happening to them.
When we are looking to work together as a team we want to be confident in our ability to lead so that our horse seeks us for direction and be flexible in reading their response to our ask and how we respond. That is why our holistic horse handling pillars of relaxation, compassionate leadership, cuing and communication and emotional agility so that every time we ask something of our horse we are reading the response and adapting the ask.

July 2022 I went through the Buteyko breathing practitioner training to add a tool to my tool kit when working with the horses and my students. I didn't expect to be so thoroughly impressed by how easily it taps in to our nervous system, although I shouldn't have been surprised with how intimately our breath and nervous system are connected. Mim has been kind enough to offer a quick 3 minute exercise for you to try out with your horses or just by yourself.
It has taken a couple of months practise to build the body awareness and understand the symptoms associated with the shift of nervous system state as well as getting used to how the horses respond and reading their body language in responses and with each practice the horses show us new and exciting things.

Some of the behaviours we see in our horse and want to "fix" our horses aren't always in control of. If our horse has a reactive behaviour to an environmental stimulus and is punished for it they learn nothing because they can't change that behaviour themselves anyway.
An important part of training is watching for our horses nervous system response to our ask. Are they holding tension or releasing tension? If they are holding tension and we continue to push they do inevitably reach the point of no longer being able to control their behaviour because they no longer have control over their nervous system and hormonal response. It is our job to see tension holding and use our emotional agility exercises to support their experience of the ask.

When we talk about engagement in the equestrian industry it is often in reference to the horses posture stacking, in particular the hindquarters. But once you understand why the body switches on for physical engagement you understand that we can't even begin to talk about physical engagement until we talk about mental engagement.
And mental engagement is hard!! How can we make learning fun and easy and movement feel good so that our horses are enthusiastic and willing partners in training? This is the conversation we are having on the podcast today.

A horse that can't control its emotions can't control its behaviour!
A reason why we see dangerous behaviours as a result of unregulated emotions is because our horse has said no and we are taught to "push them through it" or "show them who's boss". Sometimes this works, but sometimes our horse lacks trust in our judgement if we have previously asked them to do something they aren't ready for or they think we aren't ready for what we are asking of them.
This is how we show up for our horse in a way that breaks their trust, faith and confidence in us. When we set them and ourselves unachievable tasks that either we or they or both cannot confidently navigate together. Which is part of the process!!! We are always going to be putting ourselves in a position where either us or the horse or both aren't prepared adequately. That is where growth happens but its how we respond when the wheels come off, how big that jump was from achievable to unachievable task was or if we've put ourselves or our horse in to a situation that was either too scary or too dangerous to navigate safely that our horse stops taking direction from us because they have lost confidence in us.
In this episode, let's chat about what it looks like for the horse to say no because we aren't ready.

In this training we talk about acceptance of bit pressure vs submission to the bit. These terms are used interchangably in the equestrian industry but couldn't be more polar opposite in the outcome achievement. Have a listen to this training to understand why and check out the youtube training to see how we develop acceptance of contact.

This was such a fabulous conversation with Megan from holistic hooves where we delved in to managing and working with donkeys who have been deemed too difficult to handle. Megan brings us a fresh light on how we can work together with our donkeys and our horses when we can understand the difference between making a donkey feel safe to be vulnerable around us vs being bullied in to submission. Megan gives us a view in to how and why donkeys can get such a bad wrap and how, when we work with them supportively, they have a beautiful heart and soul.

Get your pen and paper out and get ready to take some big actions. We are going to get in to some serious goal setting and planning as we head in to the end of term 1. Setting goals and reflecting are the best ways to not only be accountable for the action you've taken but also realistic. They help you hold tragectory or shift based on what you are enjoying and what is honestly feasable. Without clear goal setting we can end up spending seemingly forever on the same task because we haven't given ourselves a clear direction or we get caught up in the bog.

As a child getting bucked off happened every time I rode my horse. My mum bought me a book, "why does my horse...?" insert problem behaviour here and the question has plagued me ever since.
In todays episode Sarah and I talk about my 20 year trip down the rabbit hole over this question and how the way we deal with this question continues to evolve in our holistic horse handling program. If you have ever ask "why does my horse...?" make sure you listen to this episode as we dig in to some of our foundational skills on creating happy, consenting, willing horses that enjoy learning and ask to be ridden.

How can we be empathic towards are horses without making behaviours worse? In this podcast I go a little in to how I trouble shoot whether I'm assigning an unrelatable human experience to the behaviour my horse is showing or is there foundation here for what they might be feeling that needs to be addressed and supported. Just saying we can't assign human experiences means we can't show empathy for how our horse might be processing their experience. So it's a balancing act. And this is how I balance.
If you want the work done for you so you don't have to figure it out, reach out to us. Our holistic horse handling program is going to be opening for enrolments April 14. You can check it out here.

Join us in this episode as we chat to one of our stable hands Madie. Madie has had a crash course at the barn ready to take on the her competition career we thought it best she got thrown in the deep end and learnt how to swim. With only a year of riding weekly and working with horses under her belt we learnt that she had some very helpful transferable skills for dealing with challenges at the barn and improving her balance and riding quickly.
I love transferrable skills. Having a reference point from to learn something new brings so much more depth, scope and colour to our foundations and the skills we already have been working hard to master.

Connection in the saddle is through our body. We need to make sure we are balanced and secure in the saddle and allowing our horse to travel. Connection and control don't work well together. Do you feel safe to let go of your horses mouth? Can you drop the bit walk, trot and canter and still tell the horse what you want? This is where connection in the saddle is. We want to smoothly move from no contact to in to contact and back again without interfering with our horses posture or balance.

In this episode we are taking our connection work from the ground and transferring it to the saddle. There are 2 big foundational skills that I work on with my students that are often skipped, especially in the riding school environment, that could be holding you back. If you started at a riding school you might need to revisit your foundations and see if these are gaps in your training

When we give the horses the power of consent and choice we unlock their true nature. This is what psychological safety is. We're not seeing the version of the horse that is scared and fears humans, fears for its life and fears threats in its environment. We're not seeing the version of the horse that is tense and braced because it lacks faith, trust and confidence in us. We're seeing the version of the horse that feels so safe around us they are prepared to bring down their boundaries, walls and armour and be vulnerable with us.
What could your horses potential have been before life and humans happened to them? How can we unpack that armour and rewire psychological safety and vulnerability in to their learnt behaviours?
There is a little caveat with choice and consent, once we give our horses a voice, we don't always like to hear what they have to say. Feel free to reach out if you need support. You can contact us via email here

Episode 5 of the connection series, togetherness. When it comes to working with horses we often have to leave our agenda at the gate and not be emotionally attached to the outcome, just working with the horse we have on the day. In this episode we talk about what it looks like to do our training session together and that sometimes it means doing what the horse wants to do. And if you don't know what your horse wants to do, here's a little hint. They want to hang out in the paddock with their herd and eat!

Thanks for joining us for our connection series. Today we are talking about being a leader worth following. Does your horse look to you to take the lead? Do they have faith, trust and confidence in you and your skills to follow your lead? This has a lot to do with how we can strategically and intentionally structure our training sessions so that the horses build more confidence in us and themselves by creating small achievable challenges with an immense sense of satisfaction and reward on completion.
If you feel like your training sessions are lacking organisation and purpose. If you go in to your training session asking what are we going to do today? In this episode we are learning about building relationships and communication with communication buttons. The two buttons in use are hugs and scratches and there are a couple of skill sets required.
Do you know where your horse likes to be scratched?
Do you know how your horse likes to be cuddled?
Do you have a heart felt embrace you can ask your horse for and they can ask you for?
We are in to week 3 of our connection series on the first do no harm podcast in which we are learning about what I call "the softening". Does your horse melt in to your touch or do they stand with tension and brace against it? If you have a horse that holds tension against your touch on the ground they will inevitably brace against you in the saddle.
Softening and allowing them in to you and you in to them is part of relaxation and swing under saddle as well as connection based and holistic horse training

Part of having a safe horse that wants to look after you is relaxation and our horses are super good at show us active signs of relaxation and tension. When working with our horses we want our horses to feel safe to relax and have a sleep with us. That means not only do they trust us and not see us as a threat but they also trust us to stand guard while we sleep.

Join us over the next 8 episodes of our connection based training series as we become powerfully connected equestrians that don't feel conflicted about the tools that we us because we understand what our horses are trying to communicate when they don't respond to our aids the way we asked.
In this episode we are sharing with you one of our first key identifiers for whether or not our horse is with us, eye contact! As humans, we kind of suck at reading body language. We have so heavily leaned in to using verbal communication with each other that we have lost the art of non verbal communication. This is what we learn from our horses.
The number 1 way to recognise if your horse is with you and connected and consenting or if they're starting to feel uncomfortable with what you're asking them to do is their eye contact. This is one of the first places you are going to see your horse showing discomfort about the way you are trying to communicate with them and what you're trying to ask of them.

Experiencing a word gives you a deeper meaning and understanding of what is trying to be communicated. If your riding at the moment feels like pushing shit up hill in a leaky wheelbarrow chances are you are getting frustrated, pushing yourself harder, possibly close to burn out, wondering if you are every going to be good enough.
In this episode I share with you the work I do with my students when they come to me feeling stuck and why pushing harder will only get you more stuck down the track. This is also the work I do with my beginner and intermediate students that prevents them from getting stuck where most riders get stuck and has them smashing road blocks without even knowing most people get stuck and frustrated at these points.

We talk a lot at Equestrian Movement as showing up as a leader worth following for our horses. In this podcast I go into detail of 5 things we accidentally do or unconsciously do with our horses that results in them losing faith in our leadership skills and how we can prove our worth and our value to them as someone they can trust to follow.
We love hearing from you!! So if you have found yourself in a situation where you broke your horses trust we would love to hear your story.
If you are keen as a bean for the process of strategically building your horses trust and confidence in you as well as the clarity of aids and quality of balance in the saddle, check out our membership: Riding for soundness
In this episode I talk about what the purpose of riding the horse "on the bit" is, (spoiler alert its not just to win pretty ribbons) and why I'm not a fan of side reins, chambons and other artificial aids to create it.
This podcast comes with a video training, you can watch it here, so that you have a visual to go with these concepts. Because, I get it!!! Just listening to this words can be super confusing!!! So make sure you watch this video to get a visual for hollow, on the forehand, engagement, seeking contact, behind the bit, flexing away at the third vertebrae etc.
If you're listening to this and your thinking:
- I don't know how to strategically combine my exercises for topline development.
- I thought all I had to do is tuck my horses nose in and now I'm realising why I'm stuck in my training
- I don't know how to work with soft hands my horse trusts, seeks and looks to for guidance.
Check out our online membership that lays the whole process out for you from our holistic horsemanship approach where we include emotional agility and self regulation, cue training and how to complement our exercises for soundness and impulsion. Check the membership out here.
Do you keep hearing the term half halt and feel like that is beyond anything you can begin to understand? That half halts are the realm of wizardy and the secrets are kept safe by the masters of classical dressage?

- why there seems to be so many different explanations, interpretations and ways of riding it
- how to identify the best way you can ride it!

In this training we go over aaaaaaaaaaaall the reasons I have uncovered for the question, "why does my horse buck?" Hopefully that helps you to start down the trouble shooting road for how to work with your horse to undo the bucking issues.
I have a youtube training to accompany this podcast covering the horse that has topline issues and a posterior pelvic rotation that is exacerbating the buck issue. You can watch it here

Does your horses response to you feel off? Does it feel like they don't like you?
Looking for our horses eye contact and facial expressions can be a good indicator to understanding what they feel about us. If they like us, if they enjoy what we are doing with them and to them. But if you're already recognising that your horse isn't stoked to hang out with you how do you go about being a more pleasurable experience for your horse?

Are you worried, nervous, anxious or scared at the thought of riding or handling your horse?
Are you been trawling Youtube university looking for answers for why your horse bucks, bolts, rears, bites, kicks..... etc.
In this podcast I discuss how I have worked with horses from the doggers pens to be able to look after beginner riders, started horses for beginner and intermediate students to be able to ride and taken big behavioural problems and unravelled the horses protests and behaviours so that they could become horses that were confident and trusting in their humans and could put themselves in a position to look after them.

Our horses chill factor doesn't come from moving their feet, submission based training, 20m circles or laterals. It comes from them feeling safe and securely attached within their environment, their herd, themselves and with us!!

We have had quite a few questions come through on different training scenarios and how to address them. In this show we will be applying the Equestrian Movement philosophy to:
- Desensitisation vs confidence through curiousity
- Introducing new environments.
- What to do on the ground to build a relationship with our horse before riding
- Moving your horses feet for relaxation vs developing relaxation and then bringing your horses energy up in to a work ethic.

In todays episode we are talking to Pam from the horse and human wellness project about the journey she has been on with getting to know her horse Stella. It is a story I'm sure a lot of horse owners will be familiar with as we bump along hiccup after hiccup trying to get to know our horse, understand and meet their wants and needs so that we can come together on a common ground and start working together.
After months of digging through different training philosophies on line, she finally found her jam with Stella and the relationship has been strengthening and blossoming ever since.

I often see a lot of confusion and debate about what the term "over the back means" so I thought I'd do a training on what I'm looking for when I teach it with one of the horses going through our green to self carriage trainings where he's just learning how to let go and swing through the back.

This week we are chatting with Georgie from Master saddle fitters international. We talk about how the way the rider sits and the position of the rider maintains and the places their weight is distributed through the saddle affects the horses way of going. When it comes to saddle fitting you have 3 elements that all have to work in relation to one another and you have the saddle that is an inanimate object that has to be the buffering interface between the symmetry or asymmetry of the horses and the symmetry or asymmetry of the rider and the compensation patterns. So many of us don't take enough consideration of the effects we have on our horses when riding them
Everyone has a trick to getting their horse to "accept" contact and "work in a frame" but not all tricks were made equal. Some ways that we can be asking a horse into a frame can be just as detrimental as riding hollow if not more so. In this podcast we discuss submission to contact vs acceptance of and working in to contact and our tricks for getting our horses to accept and work into contact.

In todays episode we talk about how to achieve relaxation and swing in the saddle. We discuss how to get physical relaxation we first need mental relaxation.
If we want to work with a horse that isn't shut down, is emotionally engaged in what we are asking, is learning from our cues and connecting with us so we can ask more challenging ask of them, we need them to have confidence in their job, what they've got to do, their aids, us, their environment and their experience.
For mental relaxation our horses need to be:
- Pain free
- Able to look to us for emotional support and guidance
- Understand how to find answers by us clearly marking our desired behaviours through ways that are motivating to our horse as an individual
- Enjoying learning
- Enjoying movement
When we work our horses for 100% submission we miss cues from our horses saying:
- They don't understand or know what the answer is
- They can't give us the answer their looking for because they physically can't do it
- Pain cues
- The subtle nuances (and sometimes not so subtle) nuances of their individual personality and how they like to be work with and interacted with
- And we miss rewarding them for effort.
If you think you would like a step by step process to mental relaxation and then the physical conditioning for physical relaxation and swing, check out our membership at https://www.equestrianmovement.com/ridingforsoundness

Get your bonus training video here https://www.equestrianmovement.com/blog/musculoskeletal-canterleads
If you've ever struggled with getting the correct canter lead with your horse you will know how frustrating it is and how nerve wracking it can be when you're at a competition! Over the last 20 years of riding hundreds of different horses and training hundreds of different students, I've learnt a thing or 2 about perfecting it and here are my best tips:
Your seat aid and riding the canter strike off from your seat isn't everything.
When it comes to refining the canter lead strike off we certainly focus a lot on how we use our seat so that we can keep balance, engagement and impulsion into the strike off but if we have a problem with our canter leads this is not where we focus for 3 reasons:
- If you haven't established a light, soft seat you can be hollowing and disengaging your horses back away from you making it harder for them to get the correct canter lead and use their back
- The flick of your hip into the canter for the strike off doesn't clearly communicate to your horse what lead you want when you're teaching them. They have to figure it out for themselves.
- It is hard to use your seat exactly the same every time. Nailing that flick of the hip exactly the same way every single time you ride is nearly impossible and so also fudges your communication with your horse.
Bonus tips
- If someone else rides your horse you can GUARANTEE they won't use their seat the same way your horse will so your horse will be confused about canter leads all over again.
If you are a cuing genius and you still aren't getting the canter lead, in particular there is a lead your horse prefers there's a good chance your horse is working with crookedness. If your horse favours loading one shoulder over another or engaging one hind over another you will have a horse that is developing crooked and will favour one canter lead over another.
This is part of our responsibility for our horse. Essentially we are our horses PT and we need to ensure our horses muscle building happens evenly. The problem I see with a lot of riders is they also practice the lead that is easy because they don't want to do the work either!! Or the want the rewarding feeling of getting the correct strike off which leads to the horses muscle development becoming more and more uneven.
Aside from this creating issues in accuracy and quality in the way our horse works, it also has long term impacts on our horses soundness. Working crooked results in behavioural problems and back problems like pain that leads to bucking, rearing and bolting. If you think your horse is developing crooked but would like to know exactly how check out our gait analysis and we can coach you on how your horse is cheating the effort required to develop their body correctly plus you get 2 lesson plans which are your next best steps in developing your horse for straightness and soundness.

Join us in this podcast as I answer a few of them.
5 min 30: I feel like my horse and I don't connect.
10 min 20: I don't feel like I'm the right person for my horse. I don't know how to teach them properly. I really just want to learn patience and how to relax so I can be a partner my horse can trust.
16 min 30: My horse is aggressive, how do I manage its behaviour.

In this episode I share with you how to watch different trainers styles and techniques for training their horses and decide what you want to implement and if it aligns with your values. Specifically we talk about the natural horsemanship technique of getting our horse to "hook on" or "join up" and how I've used this in the past with my training but now prefer to use connection training.
Check out this article on scientists who got horses to "join up" with a remote control car, effectively debunking the theory that it builds an emotional connection and relationship. https://phys.org/news/2012-07-urge-rethink-monty-roberts-horse.html
The way that we work with the horse is effectively to just ask! However, there is a bit that goes into this depending on the horses previous experiences. Listen in for more on that!

This weeks episode we talk about how it can be easy to end up with accidentally having our horse shut down with traditional methods of training and even more so the more experienced you are. We share with you some tips on how to keep your horse engaged, willing and consenting throughout the training process so that we are working with mentally, emotionally and physically sound horses that can communicate their needs to you.
We explain how we use the process of consent to more deeply trouble shoot problem behaviours and share a couple of rules to keep our ego in check to ensure we aren't drilling our horses to sourness.

This week's episode of First Do No Harm we delve into how the Equestrian Movement cofounders Sarah Gallagher and Katie Boniface came together with a mutual passion for working with our horses holistically to support their mental, physical and emotional soundness. A common theme in our discussions that come up in our fb community "The Stronger Bond community" is being uncomfortable with traditional training styles that demand submission.
I talk about not liking the person and trainer I had to be to be a "successful" professional in the industry and the journey we've been on together with our stronger bond community members to build a strong relationship and connection with our horses first and then cue in the tricks, not the other way around.
