Enterprise technology purchasing has changed and continues to evolve, but whether that evolution occurs rapidly enough to meet the demands of digital transformation remains to be seen.
A 2022 Gartner survey revealed that 62 percent of recent technology purchases failed to meet respondents’ expectations; only 13 percent said that their purchase both met their expectations and that they did not settle when it came to making their final technology selection to purchase. Still, 85 percent of respondents said they received value from their purchase. What’s behind this disconnect between satisfaction and perceived value? Most often, the answer can be found in the technology purchase process.
In this episode, Hank Barnes, Chief of Research on the Gartner Tech & Service Provider team, who focuses on enterprise technology buying behavior, speaks with ThinkCast’s host Karen Stokes Lockhart, Expert Partner, about the challenges tech purchase teams face, how to navigate increasingly complex purchase processes and when to ask for help.

NFTs, cloud sustainability and autonomic systems each represent various stages of the hype cycle framework — from Innovation Trigger to the Trough of Disillusionment, and beyond. Why does Gartner expect those technologies will significantly affect business, society and people over the next two to 10 years?
As organizations prepare for the next wave of digital transformation, leaders are also navigating talent shortages, ESG — environmental, social and governance challenges — and a rapidly shifting cybersecurity landscape.
This episode features two segments that dive into both themes: First, Melissa Davis, a VP analyst who advises Gartner clients on the use of customer analytics, will share details on a few of the Gartner 2022 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies that will drive massive transformation in the public and private sectors, and a whole lot of consumer attention. New Gartner research reveals that 89% of sellers report suffering burn-out, and current levels of seller attrition simply are not sustainable, but there are ways to boost and maintain seller motivation — even improve seller performance — despite economic pressures and other challenges that fall well outside sales leaders’ control.
In this episode — originally aired by our sister show, “The Gartner Sales Podcast” — Doug Bushee, senior director analyst covering Gartner’s Sales Enablement Key Initiative, and Betsy Gregory-Hosler, a senior research director for Gartner’s Sales Research Practice, cover the latest findings from Gartner’s Sales Motivation Survey with Alice Walmesley, a director in Gartner’s Expert Advisory team who works closely with cross-industry sales leaders providing quantitative- and research-backed guidance in critical decision areas. Walmesley details the concept of seller ‘drag,’ and why sales leaders should consider impacts on drag separately from seller drive, as well as ways to diagnose and treat ‘drag’ through a more holistic, organizational approach.

The 2008-2009 recession brought several key learnings to light for businesses long after they entered recovery. First among those lessons: Executive leaders who took bold, decisive action at the very start of economic contraction saw the greatest gains against their competitors post-recession.
While many business and financial leaders looked forward to relief from burnout and a return to normalcy coming out of the pandemic, instead they now face new stresses: recession risks, talent shortages, and increasing pressure to tighten spending. In this episode — originally aired by our sister show, “CFOs’ Autonomous Future, The Gartner Finance Podcast” — Alexander Bant, Gartner’s chief of research for CFOs, dives deeper into the data, key lessons and takeaways from organizations that successfully navigated the 2008-2009 recession, and details nine key actions financial leaders can take today to continue to drive agility and digital transformation, and successfully navigate the next 12 to 24 months.

Since 2020, the pandemic, social justice movements and other significant global events have hastened the evolution of consumer or audience expectations — and criticisms — of social media. Consumers no longer scroll passively through channel feeds, and brands can no longer consider social solely a distribution channel for content.
Businesses and organizations that engage in social media without an up-to-date audience- or community-specific strategy risk diminishing channel impact and ROI, and losing customers. In this episode, originally broadcast on #Hashtags: The Gartner Marketing & Communications Podcast, Dorian Cundick, a vice president with the Gartner for Marketers Advisory Team, and Amber Gallihar Boyes, a director analyst who works with CMOs and heads of communication, discuss the unique expectations for distinct social channels, why and how audience expectations tend to shift, and the organizations that achieved successful engagement, thanks to highly intentional approaches to community building and audience activation.

Supply chain leaders are increasingly required to make faster, more accurate decisions, in real time. You’ve likely heard the phrase “enterprise value model,” but how many of us know exactly what it means — and how to use it to our organization’s advantage? Especially in today’s business environment, which is full of conflicting variables, discontinuity and disruption, we’ve discovered that traditional return-on-investment models fail to properly account for non-financial variables that are critical to value creation.
In this episode, Rita Sallam, a Distinguished VP Analyst and Gartner Fellow on the Data and Analytics team, and Donna Scott, a Distinguished VP Analyst in Gartner's Office of the CIO Research, join us to break down a new enterprise value equation that offers leaders a fresh way to view the decisions they make in terms of the impact those decisions deliver to various stakeholders and the value the organization realizes in return — not just in the here and now, but also so far as the long-term health of the business.

Every business likes to claim that it is “data-driven” or at least “data-informed,” but too often, that’s not the way things actually work. There is, however, a better way, and it relies on successfully linking data to business outcomes.

We also know that 41% of managers report needing to increase base salary an average of 15% to backfill roles. Forget the unicorns and rainbows. We all don’t have to sing “Kumbaya” to establish a good company culture.
“We think of good cultures as these places where people are happy, happy, happy all the time, where there’s no arguments. That is not true. Good cultures are places where people have strong, vibrant, energetic arguments all the time.” (Dan Coyle, Best-selling Author)
We won’t be argumentative, but we always want to challenge to standard notions for driving success, and this time on Gartner ThinkCast, we look at what elevates the best groups and teams above the rest of us. Spoiler alert – it does not mean making everyone feel comfortable. Then, marketing guru, branding expert and author Afdhel Aziz helps you elevate your brand above the noise in today’s marketplace: “Know your purpose. Know why you exist as a company beyond just making money.”
And many companies are taking the approach of, “Ask not what you can do for our brand. Ask what our brand can do for you.” But Gartner expert Rick DeLisi says you might want to ask it differently: “It already feels like a smarter, more contemporary, most sophisticated approach. The problem is, so many companies are taking the same, exact approach simultaneously, it’s real hard to differentiate.”
