This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew welcome back poker player, commentator and host Veronica Brill! Veronica unfortunately had a front-row seat to the terrible situation with Nick Vertucci at Hustler Casino Live and she shares her perspective on how events there unfolded over time, culminating in the public scandal that has broken out over the last few weeks. Veronica, who made a name for herself in the poker community by being at the forefront of the Mike Postle cheating scandal several years ago, shares her perspective on how the HCL situation came about, the warning signs she wishes she had paid more attention to along the way, how the public has reacted to her role, some advice she would share to other folks in the poker industry, how her life as a public figure has been affected by the vitriol and anger of some people in the poker industry since that time, and a lot more.

The panel also discusses various problems and solutions available to the poker world as a whole, and Jim gets a little, um…hot under the collar…talking about how we as a community deserve to ask better of ourselves and each other when it comes to making the poker world a better, more comfortable place - and maybe even a place with fewer assholes in it.

This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew interview Shimpei Adachi, a recreational player from Japan who has lived and played online in Canada for several years and has grown a YouTube following as he chronicles his poker journey. Shimpei starts the interview by sharing some details about how poker is viewed in Japan, and how the social and political landscapes are slowly changing there to allow poker to become a more accepted pastime.

This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew interviewed recent RECing Crew addition Mark “Mr. Bullet” Zhang! Mark talked about growing up in Luxembourg and his early experiences with poker, from playing with friends in high school to using it as a means to pay rent during university. He explained how a pivotal win during the EPT in Barcelona convinced him to pursue a career as a professional poker player, and reflected on his mother's initial disapproval of his career choice and how her attitude changed after he achieved significant success in the game. Mark also mentioned his preference for online poker due to the higher volume of hands he can play compared to live games.

The conversation featured a detailed discussion about post-flop play, with Mark sharing insights on the challenges of navigating various bet sizes and opponent tendencies. This week Sasha Sutton and the RecPoker RECing Crew interviewed Rebbecca Scales! Rebbecca and the gang discussed a slew of topics, including the lack of marketing to women in the World Series of Poker and the resistance to change in the industry. Rebbecca also talked about the three main barriers that women face in poker: harassment, social norms, and daily responsibilities. Sasha and Rebecca shared personal anecdotes about their experiences with both positive and negative aspects of the poker world.

Rebecca discussed her journey before joining Poker Power, including her failed attempt at creating a clothing line for women in poker. She then shared her experience of creating a marketing studio called Poker Queen and talked about her work with Women's Poker Association and the Raise It Up campaign. Sasha and Rebecca discussed the golden age of women in poker and the dramatic change that has occurred over the last five years.

The group talked about the need for men to speak up against verbal harassment towards women and the importance of zero tolerance for any kind of harassment in poker tournaments. They also discussed how male players sometimes mistreat female dealers if they make errors in their dealing and the need for protection of the room for all players.

Rebecca announced the launch of Women Poker News, a media company that aims to provide a different perspective on poker content for women. She explained that women consume media differently than men and that the company will cover mainstream events and socialites in the poker world that are often overlooked by other media companies. This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew welcome Tommy Angelo back on the show to talk about his book Waiting For Straighters - and if you are listening to this episode before the end of October, you can claim a free copy! Learn how at the end of the show.

Tommy gets right into sharing how he came to write the book, and some immediate benefits to Hold’em and Omaha players that follow his guidelines for a happier, less stressful, more profitable poker game. They discuss the potential downsides of playing fewer hands and Tommy makes an argument that a lot of those downsides are really upsides in disguise. They talk about Omaha specifically, and how it’s a difficult game to make preflop charts for, but how Waiting For Straighters as a philosophy can make a big difference in playing Omaha hands - with a few caveats and exceptions for paired or Ace hands.

Caitlyn shared her experiences in the poker world, including her meteoric rise in earnings and her advocacy efforts for causes such as homelessness and representation in poker media, before continuing with a discussion of the challenges faced by women in the male-dominated world of poker. Caitlyn and Sasha Sutton shared their experiences and emphasized the importance of mental game work in overcoming these challenges. The group also discussed the need for a more inclusive and respectful poker community. Caitlyn shared her time management strategies and reading list, and the panel delved into the complex issues surrounding women in poker, including gender bias and harassment.
