Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained are pivotal pieces of English literature…and they’re Gnostic?! Yes, claims Dr. Paul Robertson in his paper with Gabrielle Scott titled “Gnostic Thought in Milton’s Paradise Lost: Descent, Creation, Materialism, and the Eve-Sophia Parallel.” Paul guests on Talk Gnosis to drop this epic discovery about these epic poems. Virgil-like, he takes us through Milton’s remarkable synthesis of Gnostic ideas about divine descent, materiality, and salvation.
From the Son’s role as a lower creator deity to Eve’s parallel with Sophia, Robertson illuminates how Milton wove ancient Gnostic themes into his masterworks. Don’t miss this revelation of how one of the greatest works in the canon draws on some of the West’s most controversial early traditions.
-Deacon Jon shaking his fist at the heavens-
“Better to reign in the Hell of low audience and low revenue esoteric content than serve in the Heaven of popular conspiracy content falsely labelled Gnostic.”
But seriously, this turned out to be a really fun one and it won’t feel like homework so check it out!

It’s our fav returning guest….Deacon Jon. Plus, Jason has guest host Nic Laccetti back to grill this guy. Jon shares insights from his recent academic paper exploring the intersections between ancient Gnostic theology, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and critical theory. The discussion delves into how these three distinct frameworks offer complementary perspectives on human desire, lack, and our relationship with modern market systems. Jon explains how Gnostic myths about divine wisdom and separation resonate with Lacanian concepts of psychoanalytic lack and desire, while offering fresh perspectives on how these ideas apply to contemporary life.
The conversation takes an interesting turn when examining how these combined frameworks can help us understand modern market systems as a kind of deity that shapes human consciousness and behavior. Rather than simply critiquing capitalism or promoting a return to some imagined “true self,” we explore how Gnostic thought might offer more nuanced ways to understand and navigate our relationship with markets and desire.

Talk Gnosis interviews Terry Robinson and Puka from the Mage podcast about their recent episode exploring Gnosticism through the lens of the role-playing game Mage: The Ascension. The discussion goes into how role-playing games can serve as gateways to understanding complex philosophical and spiritual traditions, with both hosts sharing how games like Mage encourage players to explore different worldviews and ways of understanding reality.
The conversation expands beyond just Gnosticism and Mage to explore how role-playing games can be a “technology” for safely exploring spiritual and philosophical ideas and help players engage with concepts of wonder, belief, and personal transformation in ways that can carry over into their real lives.

Jakob Böhme, Blake, Art, & Mysticism w/ M.R. Osbourne
Make sure you check out Part 1 of this topic at https://pod.link/845230843/episode/d9d2540d29bb691ffe013116420423ba
We’re back with M.R. Osbourne to talk about the profound mysteries and codes hidden in a William Blake painting and what it has to do with a cobbler who changed history. Jakob Böhme, a 16th-century German mystic and cobbler, developed a complex theological system that influenced everyone from William Blake to Karl Marx. Through his mystical insights and experiences, Böhme sought to explain the existence of evil and humanity’s path to reintegration with the divine.
The conversation explores Böhme’s unique understanding of good and evil as necessary coexisting forces within creation, his concept of the “Dark World,” and his influence on later esoteric thinkers like Swedenborg and Hegel. Osbourne illuminates these complex ideas through the lens of Blake’s artwork, demonstrating how Blake visually represented Böhme’s principles of divine essence and spiritual transformation.

M.R. Osborne is back to talk about his book (it’s our fav one yet) “The Alchemy of William Blake: The Three Principles of the Divine Essence in an Allegory of the Spiritual Condition of Man,” which goes deep into the esoteric world of William Blake’s art and philosophy. Osborne meticulously breaks down Blake’s 1811 painting “An Allegory of the Spiritual Condition of Man,” revealing the intricate alchemical symbolism and spiritual messages hidden within. We explore how Blake’s unique vision was influenced by various esoteric traditions, including the work of Jacob Boehme, while still maintaining his singular perspective.
The interview offers insights into Blake’s unconventional views on good and evil, his concept of spiritual evolution, and the role of imagination in his religious and philosophical beliefs. Osborne expertly connects Blake’s artistic and spiritual ideas to his political stance, highlighting how Blake’s mysticism informed his critique of societal norms and institutions. [Talk Gnosis] Discussing the book DRILL with author Scott R. Jones
We welcome back Scott R. Jones, writer, sorcerer, and mailman launching an attack on a very specific god, worshiped by the Jehovah’s Witness. (Or as Scott calls it in the book JHVH1.)
Scott has spent time on Talk Gnosis before, often talking about the intersection of horror and Gnosticism, either individually or on a panel. Scott gained this expertise as a prolific writer and publisher of horror fiction, and through his own explorations into Gnosticism and esotericism.
And now he’s here to talk about the work he’s made where all of those things meet, DRILL. From the blurb on the book: Magical mailman kills God in this novel of cosmic horror/occult ritual.
Mixing auto-fiction, cosmic horror, and personal quest, this book is a powerful experience. (It’s also very well written!) It takes you through Scott’s experiences with the Jehovah’s Witness, and the deeply human reason he would want to exorcise JHVH1.
As Gnostics, we can find many resonances: what it is to grapple with forces that seek to limit you… and speculations of what may lay beyond those forces.
I hope this episode inspires you to experience the book for yourself. If you’ve read it, I hope we gave you some interesting new ideas to chew on.
We sit down down with author Michelle Fogle to discuss her latest book, “Paris Bohemian.” This novel is a fictionalized historical account of the life of the renowned and groundbreaking composer Erik Satie. The book delves into Satie’s life and varied career, from his days as a rebellious composer to his successes in the cabarets of Montmartre, to the influence of occult thought on his musics and philosophy, and his influential relationships like that with Claude Debussy.
“Paris Bohemian” aims to provide readers with an intimate portrayal of Satie’s life, capturing the essence of his eccentric personality and his involvement in the esoteric movements of his time.
Fogle’s journey to writing this novel began with a personal connection to Satie’s music, which she first encountered during the 1960s. Her fascination led her to extensive research, including travels to Paris and Normandy to trace Satie’s footsteps. The author also shared insights into Satie’s personal life, including his tragic losses and complex relationships, which profoundly influenced his music and personality. The novel not only highlights Satie’s artistic legacy but also sheds light on the human experiences that shaped his extraordinary life.

You know a rock opera about the true story of an esoterically inspired cult leader would grab our attention…plus the sex, drugs, gold, and bull whipping! So we interviewed GW Brazier, the creative force behind Brother 12: The Rock Opera, and its producer, Belinda Perez. The project brings to life the enigmatic and controversial figure of Brother 12, a 1920s cult leader who promised salvation from an impending apocalypse. The creators blend theatrical drama, a post-punk gothic soundtrack, and a touch of dark humour to craft a provocative performance.
In the interview, GW and Belinda discuss the story of Brother 12, the musical influences, and the creative process behind the show. They delve into how they adapted historical events and characters for the stage, blending fact with creative license to tell a compelling story. The show not only tells the captivating narrative of Brother 12’s rise and fall but also reflects on contemporary themes of charisma, manipulation, and the human desire for belonging. The rock opera is both an exploration of, and a critique of, the darker aspects of leadership and belief, set to the backdrop of an 80s-inspired musical journey.

Look Back in Anger: The Gnosis of Kenneth Anger w/ Nic Laccetti
Hey everybody, Nic Laccetti ‘s back for a show we can’t wait for you to check out all about Kenneth Anger and his work. Anger was an influential independent and avant-garde filmmaker who incorporated occult themes and transgressive imagery into his work. As a gay man and follower of Aleister Crowley’s Thelema in the 1940s-1960s, Anger saw his films as a way to magically influence culture and usher in Crowley’s new “Aeon of Horus.” His techniques, such as abstract montages set to pop music in films like Scorpio Rising, had a major impact on later directors. Anger was also embedded in 1960s counterculture, befriending and working with celebrities like Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful and uhhhh one of the Manson family killers.
We discuss how Anger’s films were themselves occult rituals, not just depicting esoteric and Gnostic themes on a surface level. Discover how his work is still relevant today, both for its boundary-pushing, taboo-breaking sensibility and the way it documents a certain violent and rebellious undercurrent in American culture.

Sociologist, author, podcaster, and writer Dr. Ashley Frawley comes on Talk Gnosis to talk mindfulness and challenge the prevailing narratives that frame it as a panacea for society’s ills. With a critical eye, she unpacks the journey of mindfulness from a simple practice to a widespread discourse touted as the solution to a vast array of social problems, from improving productivity to addressing mental health issues.
The conversation navigates through the history of therapeutic discourses, revealing how mindfulness, much like the self-esteem movement before it, has been used by governments and corporations to place the onus of societal issues on the individual. By dissecting the rhetoric surrounding meditation and mindfulness, Dr. Frawley invites us to reconsider its role in society, questioning whether it truly serves as a force for change or merely perpetuates a cycle of deferral and blame-shifting.

[Pop Gnosis] Elder Scrolls games can teach you Gnostic skills
Playing these video games will lead to Gnosis! We promise! The only faster way is by contributing to our patreon! (Links below.)
Jason Mehmel and Nic Lacetti explore the similarities between the mythology and metaphysics Gnosticism and the Elder Scrolls series of games. (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, among others!)
Continually developed, and blossoming within the game Morrowind, the Elder Scrolls suggest a metaphysics very different from a lot of other fantasy, consisting of divine beings that explore the nature of stasis and change, as well as creator figures that are either benevolent or malevolent, depending on your perspective. Not to mention, some of those divine beings seem to know they’re in a video game, and some of the mythology reflects the ‘reality’ of a video game experience.
Both the characters in the world and the real-life fans continuously debate and theorize about the nature of these mysteries. They generally assume there there is no ‘final’ answer to be gleaned; the debate is the point.
Nic and Jason reflect on that as connected to Gnostic communities and reflect on the value of discussion within the community!
Some of the stuff we mentioned in the show:

M.R. Osborne, a familiar face on our show, has previously delved into the profound doctrines of the enigmatic mystic, Martinez de Pasqually. Today, we turn our focus to Pasqually’s monumental work, “Treatise on the Reintegration of Beings Into Their Original Property, Virtue, and Divine, Spiritual Power.” This text stands as a unique Kabbalistic interpretation and a re-envisioning of Genesis. It offers an illuminating narrative that precedes and underpins the familiar biblical story, inviting us to explore the deeper layers and hidden meanings behind the tales we thought we knew.
The “Treatise on the Reintegration of Beings” is much more than a historical artifact; it’s a rich and life changing mystical interpretation of the best known stories in Western civilization underpinned by a rich tapestry of gematria, Kabbalistic methods, Rosicrucian symbolism, and of Neoplatonic philosophy. Its core doctrine offers a unique perspective on the spiritual hierarchy of the universe. Pasqually’s work is pivotal in understanding the intricate connections between man, the divine, and the universe. It’s a profound exploration of spiritual cosmology, addressing the fall and potential redemption of humanity, and offering a path towards spiritual reintegration.

[Talk Gnosis] A long chat with SHWEP and Earl Fontainelle!
Settle in, folks, get comfy. This is a long chat with Earl, the driving force behind the Secret History of Western Esotericism Podcast, or SHWEP.
Hosted by Jason Mehmel, with guest Shaun McCann of the Apostolic Johannite Church.
We cover a lot of territory in this wide-ranging discussion. As fans of the SHWEP, Jason and Shaun had lots to ask about and Earl’s wonderful responses kept the conversation going! We also asked listener questions which led to further fascinating places!
Earl was a fabulous guest, engaging with us as practicing Gnostics as much as we were asking him about his fabulous work!
If you’re not familiar with SHEWP, then get on board! Here’s some information about the show itself.
The Secret History of Western Esotericism Podcast is a chronological history-of-ideas narrative documenting the development of a central, but often-overlooked, collection of intellectual currents in the western world. The exact parameters of what constitutes western esotericism are an ongoing debate in academe, but they certainly include esoteric Platonism through history, alchemy, astrology, traditions of learned magic, occultism, and many types of thought usually considered under the imprecise term ‘mysticism’.
Found at http://shwep.net or wherever you get your podcasts!
(Note: We recorded this episode in March 2023, but technical difficulties delayed the release until now!)
The director and writer West Craven is best remembered as a horror genius for “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Scream,” and many others. But his career was more expansive than the horror genre including everything from an experimental novel to a heart warming Meryl Streep pic. What unites his work is a focus on meta, societal, and theological narratives. That’s right, theological! Raised as an evangelical Christian, a movement he rejected, his films say profound things about religion in America, religious mythos, and maybe even the nature of God.
Dr. David Goodin returns to the show to discuss “Theology & Wes Craven” a book of essays he edited and contributed to on the topic. Don’t be scared, tune in now!

Cult of the Dead: A Brief History of Christianity w/ Dr. Kyle Smith
Delve into our illuminating conversation with Dr. Kyle Smith, the author of the fascinating social history “Cult of the Dead:A Brief History of Christianity.” Dr. Smith discusses his research into how Christianity was profoundly shaped by the cult of martyrdom in its early centuries. He explains how the often gruesome stories of saints’ tortures and deaths reinforced Christian faith and bound believers together, and how martyrs’ relics and shrines continue to be venerated today. Kyle also unpacks how commemorating martyrdom through calendar feasts dedicated to saints’ deaths structured the passage of time itself for Christians.

Platonism & Ancient Gnosticism Part 3 w/ Joanne Leone
It’s said “philosophy started with Plato” and while Platonism is everywhere it has a special, intense, and weird relationship with Gnosticism. For more than three hours we examined it with Joanne Leone and now we’re wrapping it up with a discussion on the demiurge! Well not just the demiurge but so much on how the Gnostics engaged and transformed but ultimately embraced the Platonic thought of their time. If you listen to all three hours you’ll be the new philosopher king (or queen or ruler or whatever title you choose).
The funny thing is, in some ways we only scratched the surface, it took us 9 months to get this out (we have A LOT of banked shows for y’all) but we’re hoping Joanne will come back on for a few hours/days/weeks more to keep it going sometime…

The ancient Gnostics were, and still are, accused of cosmic pessimism, of seeing this life as torture. Many have pushed back that this wasn’t their true message but maybe there’s something here we shouldn’t be turning away from: Is life horrible and happiness fleeting? Could embracing a depressive realist view of existence actually allow us to see things as they really are instead of what we want them to be?? Explore these questions and the hell that is existence in our anti-antidepressent show with philosopher and the founder of negative pyschoanalysis, Dr. Julie Reshe.

Founded in 1754 by the mysterious Martinez de Pasqually, the Order of Knight-Masons Elect Priests of the Universe (AKA the Élus Coën) practiced a system of white magic (theurgy) aimed at recovering humanity’s original, spiritual memory. Members of the secret fraternity worked tirelessly for the restoration of man’s inner divinity and eventual reintegration with God. M.R. Osbourne has published the first English translation of the “Lessons of Lyons” a collection of Élus Coën teachings made of notes and lectures written between 1774 – 1776 by Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, Jean-Baptiste Willermoz and Jean-Jacques Du Roy d’Hauterive concerning the directions given by Martinez de Pasqually.

Gnosticism, Lacan, & the Wisdom of the Serpent w/Dr. Agata Bielik-Robson
Dr. Agata Bielik-Robsonm, Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Nottingham, poetically interrogates Gnosticism and Lurianic Kabbalah with us to reveal how Gnosticism is an essential consequence of monotheism and is deeply embedded in the Bible, in Jewish history and thought, and maybe, in so many unrecognized ways, in much of western philosophy. From the contraction of God to the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s “solid hatred addressed to being” to the archons of the symbolic order, Dr. Bielik-Robson unveils the wisdom of the serpent and invites us to read the subterranean bible.

Jacob Frank: His Heresies, His Influence w/Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson
Jacob Frank was a Jewish messianic claimant in 18th Century Poland. Famous and influential in his time, he’s mostly remembered today as a cult leader, a madman, and a swindler, and -maybe- he was all these things BUT that doesn’t mean his thought, his religious ideas, and his life are not fascinating and worthy of study. In fact, some of his doctrines ring with echoes of Gnosticism, and his connections to the western esoteric tradition are startling. Our guest Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson’s new book “The Heresy of Jacob Frank From Jewish Messianism to Esoteric Myth” is a groundbreaking study of Frank, clearing up many misconceptions and laying out his surprising influence on the modern world. You don’t want to miss this one folks, it’s wild, strap in and tune in!

Catching the Light of the “Secret Revelation of John” w/Dr. Shirley Paulson
The Secret Revelation of John was lost to humanity for almost a millennia and a half, and now that we have it again, what light can it shine on the human condition and our relationship with the Divine? What healing can it bring to a world that feels more broken than ever?
Dr. Shirley Paulson’s new book “Catching the Light: The Secret Revelation of John” is a highly readable, powerful, and original guide to Secret John. Combining the best in scholarship with penetrating spiritual insights, Dr. Paulson illuminates the story of Sophia, the Demiurge, the Savior, and of us all. German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is considered by many to be one of the most important thinkers to have ever lived. And he had a lot to say about Christianity, maybe even enough to say he changed how we thought about the faith forever.
However, Hegel is notoriously difficult to follow, so Dr. Todd McGowan, author of “Emancipation After Hegel,” comes on the show to talk Hegel with the Talk Gnosis crew. We dialogue about dialectics, bringing heaven down to main street, the death of God, death in German, similarities and differences between Hegel’s thought and Gnosticism, why alienation can be a good thing, stoicism, and Hegel’s beautiful prose.

Welcome to another episode of Pop Gnosis! Today we’re going to be talking about the Netflix phenomenon Sandman, created by Neil Gaiman. We’ll touch on its comic history as well. On Pop Gnosis we take a look at the culture around us through a gnostic lens. Sometimes the connections are direct and easy to see, but sometimes maybe they’re lurking just underneath and need to be uncovered with a little digging. So that’s what we’re doing here!
Gnosticism is full of mythology and mysticism, and one of the primary elements is imagining a level of reality that goes even higher than gods and angels. Sandman matches this with The Endless, forces that are older than anything, personifications of Dream, Death, Destiny, and so on. Forces that both rule reality and serve it, with strict duties to perform.
The first season of Sandman dives into all of this, as Dream goes through a series of events that bring him closer to human experience than he’d ever dared to… dream?

ReUp: Epiphanies About the Mysterious Magi w/ Dr. Eric Vanden Eykel
Epiphany season, which marks the famous visit of the Magi to Jesus in the well known Christmas story, is upon us! And to celebrate we’re interviewing Dr. Eric Vanden Eykel, author of “The Magi: Who They Were, How They’ve Been Remembered, and Why They Still Fascinate.”
Ancient historian and scholar Eric Vanden Eykel reveals what the author of the Gospel of Matthew may have meant to convey with this mysterious story of wise men from the East and helps us to understand both the Magi and the ancient and modern interpreters who have tried to study them. He shows how, from a mere twelve verses in the Gospel of Matthew, a varied and vast literary and artistic tradition was born.

It’s our Christmas special and also another ep of our new show Pop Gnosis and wow…it’s also the reveal of our new host Rebecca “Bee” Scolnick! Bee and Jason will be exploring how Gnosticism is reflected in the cultural world around us, and how movies, music, art etc. have the capacity for gnosis, instead of only looking for it in explicitly religious, or explicitly historical texts.
This time we’re watching 2021’s arthouse fantasy movie “The Green Knight.” It takes place in King Arthur’s court at Christmas and maybe the original 14th century poem it’s based on has some Gnosticism in it and this trippy, fascinating, and bold interpretation rules. We have a lot to say about it and you’re going to love this ep…I can say that because Talk Gnosis’ Deacon Jon is writing this and he was the guest, not the host, so he’s impartial.

Mystic, philosopher, and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943) was a fascinating thinker and activist whose influence only grows as the years go by. Her life story intersects with some of the biggest events and movements of the first half of the 20th century and her mysterious death is still debated.

Gnostic Questions, Questions, Questions & Some Answers w/ Bishop Tim Mansfield
You ask the questions about Gnosticism and we do our best to answer them. Bishop Tim Mansfield joins Deacon Jon and Jason to give our Gnosis and speculation and thoughts on questions submitted by you, the audience. Profound questions are asked and we go long but I feel like there’s something in this ep that everyone will love and something everyone will hate and each of those things will be different for every listener. This one goes deep and we talk a lot about trauma and abuse at the end of the ep so here’s a few resources for any one going through similar situations or knows someone close to them who is:
Rather than being a quirky religion from almost 2000 years ago, Gnosticism weaves its self through Western culture and history, sometimes hiding, sometimes prevalent. In her book “The Gnostic Paradigm,” Natanela Elias uncovers gnostic undercurrents in the literature of late medieval England—and she’s our guest and guide as we examine the mystical knowledge hiding in some of the most renown English literature of the Middle Ages.

In the early 1800s in Paris, the physician Bernard-Raymond Fabré-Palaprat discovered (or claimed to discover, or was led to believe he discovered) a secret Gnostic tradition that stretched back in time to the medieval Templars and then even further back to John the Baptist, Jesus, and John the Evangelist.
To talk to us about both Palaprat and the Johannite tradition we’re joined by Bishop Shaun McCann, Patriarch of the Apostolic Johannite Church and…hey that’s the church that sponsors this show! And the one that Jon and Jason are in!! And that’s why this is a great ep as the Bishop Shaun, with the help of Jason’s penetrating questions, illustrates why this tradition is a living reality and why a French heretic doctor still matters 200 years later.
This is part 1 of 2 and we’re hoping to do more on the topic….

The Gnosis of Georges Bataille w/ Emmalea Russo & Nic Laccetti
Georges Bataille (1897–1962) was a French philosopher, author, surrealist, poet, writer of erotica, sociologist, a master of transgression and filth, a founder of a secret society, and a mystic…well a mystic of some sort…you’ll see…and a whole lot of other things! To get a handle on this unique thinker, one who associated some of his own thinking with the ancient Gnostics, we have returning guests Emmalea Russo and Nic Laccetti.
Read Bataille’s “Gnosticism & Base Materialism” in this collection of some of his work here (essay 13): https://ia801603.us.archive.org/17/items/BatailleTheBatailleReader/Bataille%20-%20The%20Bataille%20Reader.pdf

Temple Theology posits a secret lost tradition that lies behind Western religion and mysticism… and the now unveiled mysteries of Temple Theology shine a new light on both Gnosticism and one of its most famous texts: The Secret Book of John
Make sure you check out part 1 at: https://pod.link/845230843/episode/c04f717fcb4c922e21a94eed430d59e2
The Secret Book of John aka The Apocryphon of John is often considered the paradigm of the Gnostic myth, what many people think of when they think of Gnosticism. Though lost for more than 1200 years it was influential in its time and since its rediscovery has been blowing minds and bestowing Gnosis. It’s a tricky and intricate and thrilling meta-text that incorporates everything from Greek tragedy to Jewish mysticism to political commentary to the whole history of the cosmos.
Bishop Tim Mansfield is our guest for an open conversation that ended up running THREE HOURS straight and we only scratched the surface of all this book can tell us and all the ways it can be interpreted. We’ve chopped the first part of the conversation into two separate eps and the third is more precise and about Temple Theology so it stands on its own.
Read Secret John here: http://www.gnosis.org/naghamm/nhl_sbj.htm

The Golden Dawn, the OTO, Memphis-Misraim Masonry, Theosophy, all are esoteric societies who’ve influenced and guided spiritual seekers, artists, and thinkers–and a secret powerful technique and meditative practice is shared by all of them…well at least some streams in these movements, it’s complicated.
Sam Robinson from Pansophers.com returns to pick up where he left off in our discussion of the Rosicrucian adept Mailander and how his teachings secretly influenced so many groups and esoteric teachers.
Our first discussion with Sam: https://youtu.be/9faR5zGc2us

Sam Robinson of Pansophers.com comes on Talk Gnosis to reveal a secret Rosicrucian adept and a hidden path of spiritual transformation, a technique of inner alchemy, that’s been a huge influence on a vast variety of spiritual teachers and esoteric movements.
Go to Pansophers.com not just for Sam’s work but for a wide range of thinkers, teachers, and historians exploring different aspects of the Rosicrucian tradition.
Inner Alchemy The Wikipedia article refers to Eastern Inner Alchemy but it gives one a little context at least though what Sam’s talking about has serious differences
Do you feel like the world’s ending? Well, you might be right (this time) but for thousands of years people have seen THE END just around the corner and the canonical Book of Revelation from the Christian bible has inspired thousands of years of paranoia and division but also amazing art, literature, empowerment for the downtrodden, and spiritual speculation. Is it Gnostic? Could it be made Gnostic?
What’s up with this trippy book anyway? To talk about Revelation and Gnosticism a 5-headed beast rose from the waters consisting of the Talk Gnosis all stars: Clark Aitkins, Deacon Angie Wisk-Nowell, Nic Laccetti, Jason Memel, and Deacon Jon.
The Rev. James Ishmael Ford is an American Zen Buddhist priest, a Unitarian Universalist minister, writer, and a spiritual seeker who’s explored and been connected to the last 60 years or so of religious developments in the West. Our frank, funny, and enlightening (literally) conversation touches on everything to nonduality to the quirks of modern Gnosticism. Look, you don’t want to miss any of our shows but you’ll get a lot out of this one!
A mysterious group of soldiers, theatre artists, writers, and mystics tried to bring the magic and mystery of ancient Egypt into 19th Century France through the Sacred Order of the Sophisians. A long forgotten secret society with some Gnostic qualities, the Sophisians are a fascinating group because of their beliefs, rituals, art, and entanglements with Napoleon and politics. An extremely obscure group we hope you enjoy discovering them with scholar Dr. Darius Spieth who’s the authour of “Napoleon’s Sorcerers: The Sophisians.”
The canonical Gospel of Mark is one of the oldest Christian documents and while many Christian mystics and Gnostics may not pay much attention to it we think it might reveal some esoteric secrets of the universe if looked at through new eyes. To talk about Mark and Gnosticism we put together another panel of all Talk Gnosis all stars: Clark Aitkins, Deacon Angie Wisk-Nowell, Nic Laccetti, Jason Memel, and Deacon Jon.
Art and creation is a form of magical creativity and theatre has always had a special relationship to mystical ritual, religion, and the occult. Dr. Ed Lingan, scholar/professor/theatre artist, has a book specifically about theatre and the occult revival of the late 19th century, a revival that included many of the Gnostics and mystics who influence esoteric religion to this day. We talk to Dr. Lingan about his book but also about the Gnosis and power of live theatre.
A mystical experience for you to have is checking out this interview with writer, poet, and scholar Emmalea Russo. She’s our guide to this huge and dense topic as we go through what mysticism even is—and we cover some serious ground including what horror has to do with mysticism, unexpected and underknown mystics, transcendence in a secular age, what art has to do with the mystic and, of course, always so much more.
The canonical Gospel of John has inspired mainstream mystics, heretical Gnostics, occultists, and people of faith of many stripes for almost 2000 years. We put together a panel to talk about the magic and power of this biblical text.
We’ve got all returning all stars for this one: Deacon Angie Wisk-Nowell, Nic Laccetti, Jason Memel, and Deacon Jon.
REUP DUE TO GLITCH: Joséphin Péladan: mystic, art critic, Rosicrucian and curator (sometimes called the “first art curator”) was a late 19th century/early 20th century French visionary who could change your life—and whose vital impact on everything from high art to esoteric and occult spirituality has been almost forgotten. But we’re in a bit of Péladan renaissance now and Dr. Sasha Chaitow returns to the show to talk about his life and work and tell us about the Péladan course she’s offering online.
Take Dr. Chaitow’s course on Péladan: https://www.treadwells-london.com/events-1/peladans-system-for-self-initiation-foundation-level

Dr. Matthew R. Anderson is a Biblical scholar, professor, and ordained Lutheran clergy and he’s the perfect guest for our New Year’s Eve special thanks to his new book “Pairings: The Bible and Booze.” From apple cider (Genesis) to bloody Caesars (Revelation), this book offers a collection of biblical texts paired with drinks reveals a rich complexity of scholarship while remaining satisfyingly easy on the palate. “Pairings” opens up generous undertones of prophetic justice and plush and full-bodied humour.

Sabbatai Zevi was a 17th century religious leader who claimed to be the Jewish messiah. His movement and influence was huge at the time, and while he’s mostly forgotten today he was a major figure. While mostly understood as a scoundrel he’s a fascinating figure and mystics and Gnostics of all kinds will at least appreciate the shocking theological speculation and Kabbalah that surrounded him (though maybe he should be understood as a cautionary figure for all on the religious path). Scholar of Jewish mysticism Dr. David Halperin joins us once more to talk about Zevi and some related thinkers from his movement.

Can esotericism be political? While many practitioners strongly believe that the practical application of esoteric teachings can make human beings more moral, loving, and kind, it often appears as though there is no connection between Western esotericism and social justice. In fact, many esoteric teachers and philosophies have been associated with right wing, or even fascist personalities and philosophies.
In his book, The Inner Church is the Hope of the World: Western Esotericism as a Theology of Liberation, our guest Nicholas Laccetti examines the esoteric tradition in the light of liberation theology, which has a decidedly leftist/Marxist bent. He joined us for a discussion of the current state of esotericism and its association with certain factions of the alt right.
We also discussed whether the perceived elitism of esotericism is compatible with social justice movements which typically support the idea of egalitarianism. Naturally, we had to ask about the archons (Gnostics can’t talk politics without ‘em) and the idea of a social qabala.
Regardless of your political persuasion, we hope that this show provokes thought and, possibly, action as you contemplate how a practice of inner development intersects with human history and social action.

Part 2 of 4 finds us once again with Bishop Timothy Mansfield of the Apostolic Johannite Church discussing some bodily Gnosis. How do awareness and meditation techniques apply to the body? How did a 17th century fringe Christian theology called Jansenism have a profound impact on the development of world religions? The body and the passions are blamed for a lot wrong with the world, but are we really meatbag automata incapable of controlling our thoughts and actions? How can asceticism help us to grow spiritually?

In part one of our four part conversation about bodily Gnosis with Bishop Timothy Mansfield we compare the concepts of the body, the mind, the self, the brain, the heart, the soul, and the spirit. Phew! What a complex topic. We discuss these subjects through the lenses of Gnosticism, the kabbalah, and eastern religions. How did the ancient Gnostics view the body and the material world? What were the Valentinians really talking about when they divided humanity up into three types? Then we close things out by exploring how the body and the mind experience meditation, and how to use that knowledge to enhance your spiritual practices.

The Apostolic Johannite Church is an esoteric, Gnostic, Christian community. Many of us seek a real spiritual community which is loving, inclusive, spiritually lively and empowering of people of all genders, races and sexualities, both rich and poor.
The Johannite tradition represents just such a community: founded by Saint John the beloved disciple of Jesus, rooted in the tradition of John the Baptist and guided by direct, experiential contact with the Divine, this tradition encourages personal responsibility and freedom of thought and practice. Our conversation with Clark Aitkins continues, and the Gospel of Mary just gets more and more interesting. What instructions does the Gospel give? Is this a feminist document? Can we have a soul ascent as modern Gnostics? How does this document relate to Jewish mysticism? How doe the ancient view of the afterlife affect the development of Gnosticism?

Clark Aitkins of the Johannite Church joins us to share his expertise as a recent graduate of Harvard with a Graduate Degree in New Testament and Christianity, where he studied with the renowned Gnostic scholar Dr. Karen King. Clark loves the Gospel of Mary and spent a lot of time at Harvard studying it. In this episode we give an overview of the Gospel of Mary, when it was written, how it was discovered, and how it was used. We discuss the nature of the Gospel as an instruction manual for Gnosis, the role of Mary as a teacher in many ancient Gnostic traditions, and the soul ascent visions that make up the second part of the Gospel. We also take an look at Grant Morrison’s “The Invisibles” series of comic books, and how the character Lord Fanny relates to this Gospel.

The author of The Refutation of All Heresies, and other early Christian writers were very keen to let everyone know how their view of Christianity was the right one. In this episode we continue our conversation with Dr. David Litwa about the heresiologists. We talk about the interesting fact that they were all pretty much accused of heresy themselves. A recent set of reports in the Atlantic sheds new light on the Gospel of Jesus’s Wife fragment, brought to the attention of the world in 2012 by renowned scholar Dr. Karen King of Harvard. Turns out the guy who owns it could very possibly have the skills to forge it. The investigation by Ariel Sabar is super interesting, whether you believe in the accuracy of the fragment or not.

The classical Gnostics certainly took a lot from Judaism at the beginning of its development. From the re-imagining of the Jewish creation story to ritual practices, Gnosticism owes a great debt to Judaism. However, there is also a legacy of antisemitism in Gnosticism and Christianity in general which we can’t ignore. We talk about the demiurge, the remixing of Jewish scripture, as well as kabbalah, merkabah, and the ascent practices that we share in common.

James McGrath of Butler University joins us once again to explain how scholars deal with the figure of Jesus. Is there a vast international conspiracy to convince you that Jesus was a real person? Well, not really. It’s a game of probabilities. Scholars say that, given the evidence we have, it’s more likely than not that there was an actual dude named Jesus walking around in the desert 2000 years ago. Of course, you are free to draw your own conclusions, and a belief in Gnosticism certainly does not need to include a belief in a historical Jesus.

Boy howdy did we have a ton of technical issues with this episode, however, we made it through and had a wonderful conversation with the illustrious Andrew Phillip Smith about the Cathars, his new book (The Lost Teachings of the Cathars), the new edition of the definitive history of the Gnostics, now called The Secret History of the Gnostics, and some of his other projects. He’s really done a lot for the modern Gnostic community, and it was great to finally get to talk to him.
The Manicheans were a very successful and influential Gnostic sect, and we continue our conversation about them with Dr. Timothy Pettipiece. We spend some time talking about their influences and why they aren’t as big in popular culture as Gnosticism. The answer might surprise you.
A lost sect of drug-taking mystical Christians who used ‘shrooms to see Christ? UFO cultists finding proof of their beliefs in ancient texts? Shapeshifting transformer Jesus? Christmas? All of this and more in our discussion on the Revelation of the Magi, an ancient text which retells the journey of the wise men to visit baby Jesus in a way that’ll blow your mind. Brent Landau from the University of Texas at Austin joins us to discuss this fascinating gospel.
There are lots of interesting stories about Jesus both in the canonical Bible and in the extra-canonical sources. Some of these involve Jesus doing some things that looks suspiciously like magic, sorcery, and necromancy. We’ll explore some of those stories in this episode.
We go into some detail about the varying stories of Jesus in India, plus we talk about the actual spread of Christianity to India and what that might have meant for the myth.
We continue our conversation with Monsignor Scott Rassbach about the angels of the Shem ha-Mephorash. He tells us a bit about his experiences, and he lets us know how you can get started with angels if you are so inclined.
Seriously horrifying carved turnips are a great subject for a podcast right? No? Okay how about horror movies? Boy do we have opinions about horror movies. Many of them have fun gnostic interpretations. We chat about a bunch of them with horror movie aficionado and blogger Deacon John DiGilio.
Among the theological geekery, we take all the tangents in this episode. We talk about seeking and seeing, the light within, and lots of silly off-topic stuff too.
Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault joins us for a beautiful discussion of the wisdom tradition in Christianity, Gnosticism, and beyond. We discuss the hidden wisdom in the canonical Bible, the Gnostic scriptures, and, most importantly, contemplative practice. What she says about meditation in the modern world will change your view of the practice.
Programming note, we’re going to be recording the show in a new studio starting in a few weeks, but it’s not quite fully set up yet. Please continue to be patient for another few weeks while that is underway, we’ll be posting sporadically until then.
“The Jesus Myth Theory,” the idea that there was never a historical Jesus of Nazareth and his story is constructed from legends and myths is having its time in the sun right now. Popular among many atheists, it’s a viral idea sweeping around the ‘net. But, could such an idea be embraced by the religious? By Gnostics in particular? Our guest Miguel Conner, the OG of Gnostic podcasting, is on to talk about how the mythical Jesus is more powerful than any man or woman from history.

We continue our discussion on the Secret Gospel of Mark with Dr. Tony Burke of York University. This mysterious text has been used by some to “prove” that Jesus was gay while others claim it’s a forgery. We come at it from all angles, but Secret Mark is not all we talk about in this episode of our Talk Gnosis After Dark podcast. We touch on the intersection between new media, old media and scholarly publication and discourse. Plus, fascinating conversations on Dr. Burke’s connection to the media sensation of The Lost Gospel, and how Pinocchio can be used to teach Gnosticism.

Deacon John DiGilio has a background in both Gnosticism and Eastern traditions so he’s the perfect guest for us to ask about the criticism that Buddhism and Gnosticism is too self-centered. Here on After Dark theBishops continue our Gnarcissism episode, with the addition of Father Tony, and get deeper into the effects of individual spiritual practices, the question of “is Gnosticism is only for special smart folks?”, fancy hats and titles, and the fact that this whole reality is just happening in Father Tony’s head.

We love to jaw about the Gospel of Thomas, and in this After Dark Bishops Lainie and Ken, plus Father Tony, are joined by Bishop Lewis Keizer for a new perspective on the GoT.
Bishop Lewis Keizer’s research has shown him that Jesus of Nazareth was originally a wisdom teacher of secret mystical knowledge in the traditions of Kabbalah, Merkaba, and Gnosticism. Jesus showed his inner circle of disciples how, through study and meditation, to ascend to have personal experiences with the Divine. The best record we have of these teachings is the Gospel of Thomas, a text Bishop Keizer believes to be often misunderstood. Hear all about it in the podcast below.

The topic is the Gospel of Thomas logion 16: (16) Jesus said: Perhaps men think that I am come to cast peace upon the world; and they do not know that I am come to cast dissensions upon the earth, fire, sword, war. For there will be five who are in a house; three shall be against two and two against three, the father against the son and the son against the father, and they shall stand as solitaries.
