In this week's episode of the Docs2Dads podcast, we're revisiting the topic of our recent move to Arizona. It's been six months since our big relocation, and along the way, we've encountered some valuable lessons that I can't wait to share with you.
Transitioning to a new environment can be challenging for both parents and kids alike, and storytelling has emerged as a powerful tool in navigating these changes. By painting a vivid picture of what lies ahead, we can help our children better understand and adapt to new situations. From visualizing their new school to outlining our evening routines, storytelling fosters a sense of security and empowerment in our kids, allowing them to play an active role in the transition process.
However, as we've learned firsthand, saying goodbye to our old home isn't always easy, especially for our daughter. Finding ways to honor and preserve the memories of our past life has become essential in helping her navigate this emotional journey. Whether it's planning a trip back to Michigan or simply acknowledging her feelings of nostalgia, we're committed to supporting her every step of the way.
Tune in to this episode as we delve into the importance of storytelling in parenting, the challenges of transition, and the profound impact of resilience in our children's lives. Don't miss out on these valuable insights that can help your family navigate life's transitions with grace and resilience. Subscribe now to the Docs2Dads podcast to catch this episode and more!

Few things will ruin your summer fun faster than a major injury.
This time of year, those tend to happen while kids are riding their bikes or scooters.
Skinned knees and bruises are one thing, but if your child isn't consistently wearing a helmet, the consequences could be immensely more catastrophic.
In this episode, Dr. Scott Grant, will discuss why this issue is so important to him and discuss the risks associated with choosing not to wear a helmet.
In the summer time, it's bikes and scooters.
In the winter, it's skis and snowboards.
Every time, Please wear a helmet!!

We are kicking off our Summer Safety Series this week with a discussion of water safety and drowning prevention.
Summertime for pediatricians is all about injury prevention. We don't see as many runny noses and ear infections, thankfully.
But with kids outside riding bikes all day or swimming in the pool, there is a lot of opportunity for injury. But there are practical steps that parents can take to prevent these injuries.
Safety around the water comes down to three key parts.
1) When and How to Use Safety Equipment
2) Preparation for When Someone Gets Hurt
3) Direct and Active Adult Supervision at all Times
We dive into each of these aspects of safety to ensure our kids are staying safe.
In the coming weeks, as part of our Summer Safety Series, we will be discussing:
- Sunscreen and Sunburn Care
and
- Bike Safety and Helmet Use

Are you tired of fighting with your children over bad behavior?
Do the tactics you’ve been trying fall short?
You are not alone. You are NOT a bad dad.
This week, It’s another Book Club episode - where we turn evidence-based research into practical, values-focused parenting tips.
This week’s episode covers Dr. Becky Kennedy’s Book, Good Inside.
You don't have to feel frustrated. You don't have to feel like a bad parent.
This podcast will include my biggest lessons from this book and how I am applying these to my own life as a parent as well as with the families that I serve:
1. Internal goodness and behavior as an expression of needs, not identity
2. Importance of empathy and connection in building resilience
3. Shift from correcting behavior to helping children develop long-term emotional regulation skills
4. Parental self-reflection and emotional maturity as key to child development
One action item for dads is to practice interpreting their child's behavior as a form of communication and to respond with empathy and understanding, rather than judgment. By nurturing their child's internal goodness and emotional regulation skills, dads can help their children develop into compassionate and resilient individuals.

This week we are tackling a controversial and complex condition - ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder with The ADHD Dude, Ryan Wexelblatt.
Find Ryan on his Social media - Instagram, Youtube, and Linkedin
Find his full content and membership info at www.adhddude.com
ADHD is a difficult diagnosis for families living with someone experiencing it because of the many misconceptions, false beliefs, and poor education that exists around this topic - for medical professionals and patients alike.
So our guest this week is going to help us truly understand ADHD. He shares information that makes it more clear than most other resources you can find on ADHD!
We start by discussing how ADHD is a poor name for this condition, because while Attention challenges and hyperactivity can be clues to ADHD, they don't describe the underlying cause or provide a framework for treatment.
So we start with a definition of ADHD to frame our discussion and cut to the heart of the underlying problems in a way that empowers parents and kids living with ADHD.
We then discuss:
Other conditions that mimic ADHD: poor sleep, screen time, learning disabilities, and exposure to trauma. We help listeners understand how these pieces fit together?
What type of therapy is needed for ADHD?
What changes can parents make at home to help support their child with ADHD?
How can parents advocate for their kid's needs at school as it relates to ADHD?
Then we talk about medication?
There is a lot of stress with parents about starting medication for ADHD. It's also the aspect of treatment that everyone's uncle has an uninformed opinion about - making it even more difficult for families to make the right choice for their child.

Happy Father's Day to all Dads everywhere.
This week on the Docs2Dads podcast, we are celebrating Father's Day with Christopher Brown, the President of the National Fatherhood Initiative.
NFI works with community partners to address the issue of fatherlessness plaguing communities across the country. This includes programs to support fathers' involvement in the family and ensure that fathers are included in the parenting support programs.
We start our conversation by discussing NFI's mission on their website - "Creating a world in which every child has a 24/7 Dad" and what that means to Mr. Brown both as a dad and as the President of NFI.
We talk about the way fatherhood has evolved in the minds of the Millenial and Gen Z generations.
How and why dads are getting more involved in the family life happening in their homes and supporting their wives' careers outside the home.
Then we shift gears to talk about the ways that NFI is working with community programs across the country to address fatherlessness.
Here are some resources that we reference in the episode:

There is one question I get from parents which is most associated with anxiety and worry that one wrong move could be catastrophic. These are the questions about introducing new foods and worries about food allergies.
So this week, I have an expert in food allergies on the Docs2Dads podcast to answer the questions you have around the dinner table about Food Allergies.
In this Episode we discuss:
Infants
What signs should Breastfeeding parents look for to think about elimination diets
What signs should parents look for to think about changing formulas?
Is there such a thing as hypoallergenic formula? How do they work?
Food introduction
What are the rules for food introduction? Are these helpful or more stress for parents than it's worth?
Do parents have to stick to same food for multiple days?
Can we only introduce one new food every 3-4 days?
Common Food Allergies and Risk Factors
What’s the likelihood that a kid would be allergic to a food that isn’t one of the Big 6?

This week, we have our next Journal Club article where we dissect an article from JAMA Network Open entitled, "Association of Video Gaming With Cognitive Performance Among Children"
You can find the article on Open Access (FREE) here: If you read the article, connect with me on social media or send me your thoughts in an email - links below.
Episode Outline:
Introduction to my personal history of video games and the concerns that are commonly shared with me by parents
Outlining the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study where the data came from for this article
Describing the testing performed by the children in the study and how these are related to video games
Video Games are associated with improved cognitive performance, but worse behavioral health symptoms
Defining what is meant by "Video Gamers" and "Non-Video Gamers" and acknowledging the key differences between these groups which may explain the differences described in the paper
4 key takeaways from the article that will impact how I integrate video games into our family life when our kids get older.
1) Moderating the use of Video Games is appropriate as there may be some benefit to cognitive skills
2) Video Games should never replace family time or outdoor time
3) Stay connected to your child's mental health and notice if you might need to intervene
4) You may need to regulate video games in your home differently in different seasons based on your child's behavior, mental health, other family priorities, etc.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecc 4:12
The importance of community is in every book of wisdom from the Bible and most major world religions!!
This week, I’m joined by Anthony Vandagriff, from The Fathering Our Future podcast to discuss the importance of community for dads!!
As Dads we sometimes fall into the trap that we need to “man up” and do everything ourselves. This approach is not just unwise, it’s outright foolishness!!
Whatever struggle you may be having with your wife, children, or business, someone in your community probably has some experience and wisdom to provide.
No man is an island and this week, we challenge you to start building your community of dads to become the best husband and father you can be.
Check out Fathering Our Future for more great content for dads including my appearance on his podcast.

As Spring weather starts to appear here in Michigan, that means I get to return to my favorite activity to do with my kids in the springtime: taking a walk.
When the weather is nice, I take a walk outside with my kids almost every day!!
This good for me because it:
Forces me to Unplug from my cell phone and other technology
Helps me meet my step/activity goal each day
It's good for my kids because it:
Normalizes spending time outside in fresh air
Allows them to get 'the wiggles' out before bed
Helps with their natural circadian rhythm, especially if our walk is around the time the sun is going down.
And it's good for our relationship because:
It's time that my kids know they have my undivided attention
They can ask me about anything and we talk about their day
We can practice with subjects they are learning - right now it's shapes, colors, letters, and words - but someday these conversations will get much deeper.
So I challenge you to get outside with your kids TODAY. Whether it's walk, pushing a stroller, riding bikes, or whatever you like to do outside.
TAKE A HIKE - and take your kids with you!!

“Will you let your kids play football or hockey if they want to someday?”
Sports is a common place for kids to get injured.
This week on the podcast, I sit down with a pediatrician who is a Sports Medicine specialist, Dr. Josh Gatz. We discuss ways that parents can encourage their kids in athletic endeavors, but help them be safe and avoid injury.
This isn’t always 100% preventable, but there are some useful tips that Dr. Gatz shares to help parents.
We discussed the benefits of an active lifestyle and the social benefits of team sports. How rotating sports can reduce risk for overuse injuries and whether parents should completely avoid sports with high risk for concussion.
This was a great conversation that you won’t want to miss!!

What activities bring you the most joy?
Are they activities that you can share with your family?
This was the situation my wife and I were in recently when we took our family on a ski trip.
This week on the podcast I share some lessons my wife and I learned from sharing this love we have with our kids.
Stepping away from our day jobs to spend time with our children is invaluable and can bring us immense joy if we do it right.
Talks of leaving a legacy are frequently centered around financial planning and guardianship, but these activities that become part of your family life can be a source of shared joy for your family. is not always easy to share these activities
I share my tips in this week’s Episode!

What can we teach our children to help them grow into happy and healthy adolescents and adults?
Especially in the aftermath of the pandemic and the response to it, there has been much discussion about the rise in mental health challenges facing young adults and adolescents. Pediatric care providers (and parents) are constantly on the lookout for what can be done to prevent these challenges and support those kids who are facing them.
This week, we are diving deep into another article from a pediatric research journal. The article is titled “Decline in Independent Activity as a Cause of Decline in Children’s Mental Wellbeing: Summary of the Evidence” from the Journal of Pediatrics.
From this article, I take away three key concepts that we should be working to impart to our children to help them grow: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
The article makes the case that these were previously imparted to children through independent play time and that we should aim to return to this ideal.
I don't find this a practical solution and offer how I think modern parents can teach these same ideals within a modern parenting context.
I hope you enjoy the episode.

Should I get my kids a toothbrush with a timer?
What should I do with a loose tooth?
WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT TEETHING?!?
If there’s one area of the body that most pediatricians will gladly collaborate with a specialist, it’s the teeth. I’m so excited to welcome a board-certified pediatric dentist to the show this week.
Dr. Neema Dad (I know, it’s perfect for this show, although it’s pronounced like ‘dod’) is pediatric dentist at MyKidsDDS in Dallas, TX where he is the dentist for my two little nephews!! He did his dental school at Baylor College of Dentistry and his pediatrics fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.
We had an excellent conversation that I think you will find practical and educational. I learned a few things myself and why some folks are more at risk for cavities than others.

How far can babies see?
What's causing all that gunk around her eyes?
Is some screen time better than others?
There are a lot of things happening in a critical window with your child's vision and it leads to a lot of questions and testing in the first five years of life.
As a pediatrician, most of what I know about the eyes, I learned from my wife, the ophthalmologist. We actually don't get that much about the eyes and vision in medical school. So you are going to learn eye care for parents from the same place I did.

In our new series, "Ask the Experts," we are taking the questions you have about your child's health that you discuss around the dinner table and bringing you the most up-to-date answers from the experts.
Today, we kick off that series with Dr. Mark Pressprich, a senior urology resident and father of 5.
How can I prevent my child from getting a UTI?
Should I have my baby circumcised?
How do I get my child to stop wetting the bed?
We discuss all of these questions and more this week on the Docs2Dads Podcast.
In the next few weeks, I will be interviewing an eye doctor, an allergist, and a dentist, so send me your questions at the email below.

This week, on the Docs2Dads podcast, I am joined by Blake Brewer of the Legacy Letter Challenge. Blake has an incredible story of how a letter from his dad altered the course of his life forever and now he is on a mission to help one million dads write a letter for their kids to share the encouragement, wisdom, and love that they need.
If something were to happen to you, you would be quickly replaced at work without much fanfare. This CAN'T happen with your children. They NEED you. This letter is one way for you to be sure that the impact you want to have on your children comes to reality.
Blake and his team at the Legacy Letter Challenge make this super easy and you can start the process today by heading over to www.legacyletterchallenge.com/docs2dads

There are plenty of commentaries to be found in the media and online about parents trying to “have it all.” Parents - moms and dads alike - are frequently trying to have an ambitious career, a fulfilling home life, a fun social calendar, and leave a meaningful impact on our world.
Most discussion in this space revolves around ways to help moms make the most of their professional lives while being asked to do most (or all depending on your preferred news outlet) of the domestic work.
But Dads wrestle with this challenge as well and this episode is all about my favorite analogy for making all the pieces come together and that’s the analogy of the juggler with some glass balls and some rubber balls. And what you should do if you find yourself trying to juggle a bowling ball!!

I’ve wanted to make this type of episode for a while now. I hope you like it.
Part of my job as an academic pediatrician is to stay up to date with the latest research being done and published in the biggest research journals. Some of those articles are related to parenting - and are worthy of discussion and analysis in an episode.
Today, we do our first dive into Hot Off the Presses Parenting Research with an article from JAMA Pediatrics called “Outdoor Play as a Mitigating Factor in the Association Between Screen Time for Young Children and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes” which explores the relationship between screens time, outdoor play, and development!!
We discuss what the research team concluded from their study the Dad Guilt (or Mom Guilt) at the heart of the article and what I think you should know as you parent your kids today.
The full article can be found here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2800738
Let me know if you like this style of episode and I’ll do more like this in the future!!

If your family is anything like mine, then this winter of 2022-2023 has brought you nothing but illness after illness.
If you are living through one of these difficult seasons right now, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! This winter has been A LOT!!
There are so many families in the clinic or in my social circle that have had at least one member sick (and usually more) since Thanksgiving.
In this episode, I share a few reasons why I think this is happening, why I don't think you should be worried about your kid's immune system, and some small steps you can take to try to stop these illnesses in their tracks.
This week on the Docs2Dads Podcast!! Connect with the show across our social media or shoot me an email with your favorite dad joke or a topic idea for a future episode.

This is part two of my highlights from the books I read in 2022 that had the biggest impact on me and will guide my personal and professional development in 2023. This year, I am focusing less on setting resolutions and more on building systems for achieving my desired outcomes.
My inspiration for doing that came from excerpts of the books I read last year. In this episode, I'll discuss impactful passages from:
"Atomic Habits" by James Clear
"The 5 Love Languages" by Gary Chapman
"Life is Messy" by Matthew Kelly
"The Success Factor" by Dr. Ruth Gotian
Each of these books made an impact on me last year that informs the way I am approaching my biggest challenges in 2023. I hope the lessons I learned will help you build systems to tackle your biggest challenges of the year as well.

One of my new year's resolutions for 2022 was to read more books and find a way to actually capture and review the key insights from the books I read. I was able to accomplish this using my Kindle and the Readwise app.
Throughout the year, I have been reviewing my highlights from the books I read last year and for the next two weeks, I am going to be sharing some of the highlights that have stuck with me and I am taking with me to be a better husband, father, and pediatrician in 2023.
Today, I'm sharing the four highlights that have affected the way I think about parenting most in 2022 in the hopes that you will be able to use the wisdom of these books to help you become a better parent in 2023 as well.
In this episode, I discuss my favorite excerpts from:
Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff
Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz
Think Again by Adam Grant
The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek

One thing fathers spend a lot of time thinking about is the big picture. Where do I want my kids to end up? How do I teach them what they need to know in order to be successful and happy adults?
This week, we talk about how to be intentional about accomplishing that mission by laying out your core values into a mission statement for your fatherhood. In business, the mission statement provides clarity for the priorities and goals of a company or organization. There is wisdom in doing the same with your family.
Start thinking about living intentionally in 2023 by exploring your own mission of fatherhood.

Around the holidays, it is easy for us to get caught up in the busyness of the season, focused on what needs to get done and what we hope to receive when the holidays finally arrive.
How much easier is it for our kids to do the same? Not understanding when people around them are in need or how to think of others when planning for the holidays.
We must teach these skills to our kids and that’s why this week we are talking about empathy and generosity as core values you might have for your family. These are core values that you will almost certainly have opportunities to demonstrate for your kids and teach them about in the next few weeks as the holidays approach.
If you are intentional with how you talk to your kids about generosity and show it in your life, the more likely they are to grow up with generous spirits.

The modern American Healthcare system has turned many primary care clinics into a place with phone trees, 15-minute appointments, and surprise bills. Today's guest is working to help families and pediatricians reimagine how the patient-doctor relationship can be. Some would say that these practices are getting back to the roots of primary care with a doctor who spent time getting to know you and your family and might even show up at your home to provide care if that's what you need.
Dr. Keili Mistovich is the co-founder of Greater Cleveland Pediatrics, a Direct Pediatric Care practice in Northeast Ohio and she is sharing the benefits that she and her families have found in this care model. Dr. Keili is a board-certified Pediatrician with a passion for high-quality, personalized pediatric care. Dr. Keili received her undergraduate degree at The College of Wooster, her medical degree and a Master’s of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, and stayed in Pittsburgh for her specialized pediatric internship and residency at the world-class Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. She is also the co-founder of Zest Pediatric Network, creating a network of Direct Pediatric Care offices in Ohio and beyond.

Happy Thanksgiving!! This week, we have a short episode talking about the importance of gratitude and sharing some practical tips for introducing Gratitude as a Core Value for your family.
This requires that you develop your own habit of gratitude as well as working opportunities for gratitude into your children's daily lives.
It means expressing gratitude not only when things are going well, but also in more difficult times.
I hope that you enjoy special times with your family this Thanksgiving and a HUGE Thank You from Docs2Dads for listening for the last year!!

What are the values you want to teach your kids that will help them become the best version of themselves? Sometimes I think we spend too much time focused on parenting syles, the "HOW" of our parenting interactions, and not enough on the values we are instilling into our kids - the "WHAT" and "WHY" of parenting.
This week, we breakdown why you should take time to discuss this issue with your partner so that you can be on the same page and pulling in the same direction when it's time to teach your kids these valuable lessons.
This gives you core values to refer to during discipline.
This gives you core values that you can live out in your own life to demonstrate for your children.
This gives you core values that you can aim for, even if it requires different parenting "styles" for each of your kids to get them there.
Which values are you working to teach your kids? Share them with us on Social Media.

At some point as a parent, you might start to think about your parenting style. How do you approach raising your kids - teaching them, disciplining them, playing with them, and praying with them?
I start the discussion this week by covering the most popular psychology and parenting research done which explores parenting only as how you fall on two primary variables: Strictness and Responsiveness.
The psychology literature says that you can be generally high or low on these two variables and based on your tendencies you fall generally into a category of Uninvolved, Permissive, Authoritarian, or Authoritative Parenting.
Dr. Diana Baumrind, who did the early work of describing these parenting tendencies did establish that one of these categories has the best outcomes for kids. Which one?

Each week, at the end of the podcast, I encourage dads to pursue three things.
1) Healthier Dads
2) Happier Kids
3) Strong Communities
But how do we build stronger communities around our family?
This week, we discuss one way that we can influence the community around us and that is by voting in local elections. Election Day is next week and while much attention has been given to tight races for the US Senate and Governor's Mansions around the country, for many of us local elections, like Mayor, City Council, and School Board are much more likely to have a direct impact on our families and our community.
It's also an opportunity to talk to our kids about the blessing we have to live in a democracy and to be able to raise our voice and cast our vote for the leadership we want to see in our country, state, and community. We can teach our kids about the US Government system and our key role in moving it forward.
Let me know what you think about the power of voting in local elections on Social Media.

I started this journey over a year ago to become a better dad and build a community where other men who wanted to be great dads could find the health information and support they needed to achieve this goal.
Along the way, I have connected with other great men and women who also care about supporting dads, built a community that has taught me a lot, and learned how to show up consistently for my family and this community.
In this week's episode, I explore these ideas further in celebration of Docs2Dads' 50th episode.

We are deep into October and Halloween is just around the corner.
How do you keep your kids safe during trick-or-treating?
How can you avoid sky-high blood sugar from too much candy?
How do you ensure your dad-tax on candy is lucrative and equitable?
When do you start to give kids a little more independence around Trick-or-Treating?
We discuss all of these questions and many more this week as Dr. Scott shares one of his MOST unpopular opinions!! But I don't want my Scrooge O'Lantern to get in the way of your Halloween fun. I want you to have all the information you need to be prepared for fun family time this Halloween and to keep your kids safe whether they are Toddlers, Teens, or everywhere in between.

Is your child's asthma well controlled?
You have two or three different medications. When are you supposed to use each one?
Do these medications have side effects you need to be looking out for?
I get to spend a lot of time talking to parents about the medications they use to control their children's asthma, so I know how confusing it can be sometimes.
This week, I go through the types of symptoms we look for to help know whether a child's asthma is well controlled. I also talk about when you should seek additional help from your pediatrician if it doesn't seem like things are going particularly well.
I then break down the most common medications used by primary care pediatricians to keep asthma under control.
I hope you find this episode helpful. If you have questions please send them to me at the email or social links below and I will include them in next week's Q&A podcast or one of my upcoming social posts.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and many parents spend days and nights making sure that their child with asthma has the medications they need and doesn't have to miss school or go to the hospital for their asthma.
Fall is a difficult time for many patients with asthma, so I thought it would be a good time to talk about this fall frustration.
In this episode, we answer some common questions about asthma:
What is asthma?
How is it diagnosed?
What symptoms should parents look for if they are worried about asthma?
Who is at highest risk for developing asthma?
Why is fall such a bad time for asthma?
Do Allergies play a role in asthma?
Next week, we will cover the asthma medications and answer all of your listener questions. This week we are starting with the basics every parent should know.

Well Dads, it’s official. My wife and I are totally outnumbered. We have more kids than adults living in my house, which will be the most significant adjustment since we brought our first child home.
So I brought in an expert for us to learn from. Josh Simmons is a successful tech entrepreneur who was once my youth minister. He and his wife are on the journey of raising five children together and until their oldest just left to start college, were living with THREE teenagers in their home!!
He was generous with his time and gave some great advice.
1) Transitioning your parenting when you have more kids than parents
2) Making time for one on ones with each child and your wife (which might be most important)
3) Enjoying the season of life with teenagers
4) Thriving with life in a big family.
I’m so grateful to Josh for his time and his wisdom. I know you will get a lot from this conversation.

Throughout this podcast, we have spent a lot of time helping men prepare for fatherhood. As a pediatrician who has coached hundreds of families in the early months of life. I have shared my field guide for how dads can prepare for and adjust to their role as dads to get immense joy and meaning from that role. But when you go through the process a second time (or a third or fourth), there is someone else who needs to be prepared: the soon-to-be big brother or sister!!
Your older kids are going to have a big transition when a new baby is added to the family. My wife and I have been going through this in the last few weeks with our two kids as we prepare for the arrival of number 3.
This week on the podcast I am sharing the tips we used to prepare our kids to be a big brother and big sister so that they are excited to meet their new baby brother or sister. This is not an exact science, but knowing your child and using some of these techniques will help the transition go much smoother.

Welcome back to the Docs2Dads Podcast. I am happy to be concluding my Raising Resilient Kids series with one last tool for your Resilient Kids Tool box: Perspective Taking.
Overall, these tools are
1) Safety and Security
2) Compassionate Predictable Availability
3) The Emotional Container
and now...
4) Building Empathy by practicing seeing the world through someone else's eyes.
As will all skills we want to teach our kids, they learn this by seeing us practice them first. When your child is upset, we demonstrate the value of this skill by seeking to understand what they are feeling and why. Only then can you work together to find the appropriate response.

Much is made of children having "big feelings," but in some situations, this is not only understandable; it is expected. Dr. Viktor Frankl says in his groundbreaking, "Man's Search for Meaning" that an Abnormal Reaction to an Abnormal Situation is Normal Behavior.
We see this in a unique way in kids who have been exposed to various kinds of trauma. We have talked over the last few weeks about the kinds of trauma that have been shown in medical literature to be associated with bad health effects. This is most clearly described in the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study. But what can we learn from this reality to help us raise resilient thriving kids who are prepared to respond in emotionally healthy ways to conflict and adversity?
This week, we add another tool to our Raising Resilient Kids toolbox - the Emotional Container. If we help our kids feel safe and secure and give them the opportunity to talk to use with compassionate predictable availability, then our kids will start to unload some of their concerns and struggles onto us. The emotional container is a tool that will help you support your child in processing those emotions so that they can learn to respond rather than react. The key is this: you can't internalize or react to these big emotions, no matter how badly you want to. This can be difficult at times, but the emotional container can help.

This week is part 3 of our Raising Resilient Thriving Children Series. This week, we are talking about the second tool in the toolbox for parents.
This tool is best emulated by Mr. George Feeney from one of my favorite shows growing up, Boy Meets World. Whenever the students were in trouble, Mr. Feeney was there with a listening ear, a loving correction, or a wise recommendation. I also love this show because it was one of the few shows on television that showed a married set of parents working through life's challenges together, supporting each other, and showing tough love to their kids when needed. I'm gonna try to go back and watch this show again and see if it holds up.
Which style of compassionate predictable availability works best for your family? Scheduled or On-Demand? Parent-initiated or Child-initiated? All of these can work, it just has to be predictable!!

This week on the Docs2Dads podcast, we are continuing our series on raising resilient thriving kids!! This we talk about the hopeful side of last week’s interview. What do we do for kids to help them learn from positive stress and prevent the adverse health outcomes from ‘toxic’ stress.
What is the most important variable that determines if kids will have health outcomes from their adversity?
Can you build resilience in kids before bad things happen? (YES!!)
What is the first step to helping kids develop a sense of resilience?
The best thing about this first pillar of raising resilient thriving kids is that it comes so naturally to most dads!!

This week, I am excited to bring you an interview I did with some dear friends on their Podcast - "Less Stress in Life" where we talked about my philosophy of being a pediatrician and helping families cope with the stresses that all families face.
I start the episode with some explanations of what we mean we discuss "trauma" and "Adverse Childhood Experiences" and steps parents can take to overcome the trauma they have dealt with in their life.
I discuss some of the interesting research that I reference in the clinic and when teaching my pediatric residents to care for families.
If you are someone who has experienced trauma and still have symptoms that interfere with you becoming the parent you want to be. Please seek help. If you need help, please reach out to me or connect with Deb and Barb at LessStressInLife.com

Every day you do things that don't necessarily feel important at the moment but are vital to the long-term development of meaningful relationships. It is in these daily seemingly mundane experiences that we find the joy and meaning of our family relationships. Large romantic gestures and long vacations are nice, but they aren't always practical and will only get you so far if you aren't invested in day-to-day family life.
There are particular windows of time each day that will set you up for success with your kids. To tell them that you love them. More importantly, to show them that you love them. When you partner the advice in the episode with the mindfulness episode during men's health month, you will have concrete actionable steps to improve your interactions with your wife and family each day.

Sometimes we forget that we are made up of different parts of our lives. We cannot live as though our personal and professional lives don't blend together or affect each other. This week in the podcast I reflect on one aspect of this personal/professional integration and consider the ways that becoming a dad has made me a better doctor.
It's possible, that I was going to become a better doctor anyway with a few more years of deliberate practice under my belt. But I believe that the lessons I have learned from my children and from caring for them have helped me serve my patients and trainees better in the 3 key ways.
1. I give better advice: Not just the textbook answer, but stuff that actually works
2. I have more empathy for parents: when we ask them to do treatment options, I know that doesn't take away their other responsibilities or time commitments
3. I use a coaching style: Don't just wag your finger at families, encourage them when they are doing a good job and help them make tweaks to be more successful.
I hope you enjoy this episode and a special thanks to listener OKhateeb for their kind review!! Leave a review on your favorite podcast app and I'll spotlight it in a future episode.

The second book we are going to explore for our Book Club series is Atomic Habits by James Clear. I've referenced this book a few times on previous episodes, but I wanted to give its proper due by making it the focal point of a full episode.
If you want to know all the ways this book can turn you into a super productivity machine, then you should check out other videos and podcasts done by folks like Ali Abdal or Thomas Frank. I share some of my key takeaways from the book, but I spend most of the episode discussing how to use the tips in "Atomic Habits" to influence the environment around your kids to help them develop in Atomic Kids!!
We will talk about secrets I share with families to:
1. influence the environment around your children
2. start developing good habits early to take advantage of the compound interest of time
3. create a culture in your home of improvement, hard work, and deliberate practice, and take the focus off of achievement for its own sake.

This summer, I've been making time to read some business books to grow the podcast and develop Docs2Dads into something that will bring value to my fellow dads out there.
One of the things that struck me as I read these books is how applicable these business concepts are to the way that we run our household as well.
This week in the podcast I talk about three takeaways from a recent book I read “never split the difference “by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz and how those concepts could apply to the way we run our homes as well.
1. Parents should function as an executive board
2. Better Results through Emotional Regulation
3. Dare to dream
I'll share two more business concepts that apply to family life in the Docs2Dads Newsletter that goes out every Monday!!

As June turns to July, it feels like summer is starting to slip away. This year I am determined to make the most of the time I can spend with my kids as my oldest turns four.
This is our last summer before he starts school in the Fall.
We only get eighteen summers with our kids before they are grown and out of the house. We need to be intentional with the time we spend with our children and summer is a great time to do that.
Playing at the park, splash pads and pools, long weekend getaways. There's so much to do if we bother to make the most of it.
This week, I cover ways that we can make the most of our time during the summer with your wife and kids.

This moment for me was when I melted down in a meeting in front of my boss and senior colleagues. I realized that while my energy and passion served me well overall if I couldn’t learn to harness that energy it would be bad for my health and make me less effective as a doctor, husband, and father!!

Our money is a reflection of our values. This is my biggest takeaway from the excellent conversation I bring you this week. Financial wellness is one of the biggest challenges for dads. Money problems are one of the most frequently cited reasons for divorce. Children can grow up with an unhealthy relationship with money whether they grow up with too much or not enough. But if we keep in mind that every behavior we take with our money should reflect our values, this makes conversations with our wives easier, and it provides context for how we talk to our kids about money - whether we are spending, saving, giving, or investing.
We discuss how to get on the same page with your partner if they don't want to talk about finances. Where should you start if you feel like you are barely making it, living paycheck to paycheck, or credit card bill to credit card bill. How do we teach our kids about money and encourage them to make mistakes with small amounts as kids so they don't make mistakes with large amounts as an adult. I know you will enjoy this conversation and will have a practical next step to get your finances back on the right track!
This week's guest is Andy Hill, the award-winning family finance coach behind Marriage Kids and Money - a platform dedicated to helping young families build wealth and happiness.
Andy's advice and personal finance experience have been featured in major media outlets like CNBC, Forbes, MarketWatch, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, and NBC News. With millions of podcast downloads and video views, Andy’s message of family financial empowerment has resonated with listeners, readers, and viewers across the world.
When he's not "talking money", Andy enjoys watching his kids play soccer, singing karaoke with his wife, and watching Marvel movies.

Happy Father's Day from the Docs2Dads Podcast!!
This week, I am so excited to welcome Dr. Jeremy Toffle (@imperfectdadmd) to the show.
In this episode, we talk about dad life and embracing our imperfections when things don't go perfectly. We talk about our generation of dads and how we want to find fulfillment in our personal and professional lives and who fatherhood looks different for us than our dad's generation or any generations of dads before that.
The need to develop a community of dads to share our challenges and accomplishments with and how this can be a very difficult undertaking for dads.
We discuss how Father's Day is among the least attended services in most faith communities and the role dads can play in their children's spiritual development.
I would love the opportunity to meet you and hear about your fatherhood journey. Please take a moment to email me at [email protected] or Message me on your preferred social media platform.

Dad life gets busy. It can be difficult to make time for what we need to do in order to care for ourselves. Spending hours in the kitchen cooking food you hate just to eat it every day for the next two weeks is the only thing worse than spending hours in the gym doing supersets until you can barely move.
THERE IS A BETTER WAY and I have invited Nutrition and Fitness Coach Bart Cagara to teach us about the common myths that we should tear down and the path to developing a mindset that will help you be successful where you may have failed several times, like I have.
Bart is a young entrepreneur, health coach, and dad. Coaching entrepreneur dads to become better fathers, partners, and businessmen by helping them master their health, physique, and lifestyle.
I share a bit about my own health journey, the reality that snapped me into getting something done, and how finding an exercise I didn't hate was the key to starting me on the journey to losing significant weight and feeling the best I've ever felt.
You can connect with Bart on LinkedIn where he shares daily content about nutrition and fitness that will help you know what to do and stay motivated.

The terrible twos get a bad rep. Sure, there can be some tough days as they start to discover their emotions. But this is another period where they are learning so much and they can start to pick up intentional words to prevent some of those meltdowns. They want to play outside, learn, and explore. All things that dads are naturals at.

Should my baby be crawling? Does she have to crawl at all?
Did my baby just say "mama"?

Hey dads, did you get our first issue of the Docs2Dads Newsletter last week? If not, it's because you haven't gone to www.docs2dads.com yet to sign up for our mailing list. Each issue will include a key takeaway from the podcast, some inspiration for your weekend playtime, and what I'm doing in my downtime that might be interesting to you or help you up your game as a dad.
This week, we are starting with the youngest little ones and exploring some of those important milestones to be looking out for, when to be worried about your babies hearing and vision and, most importantly, what fun playtime with your baby should look like in these early days.
Because even though dads love play time, sometimes it can be scary or intimidating to think about playtime with kids at this age, but as they start to smile and laugh, it gets easier and easier. Mostly at this age, you are reading books (whatever you are reading, doesn't have to be kids books yet) or tummy time. My personal favorite version of tummy time is chest to chest tummy time, so you get the eye contact and the bonding.
I would love to answer your questions about development. Please send them to me at [email protected] or on any of our social media platforms!!

If there's one area where dads really feel comfortable and confident when they start their journey as a father, it's play!!
Dads want to play with their kids.
Dads want to throw a ball with their kids and wrestle with them.
We want to play dress up and do tea time.
When we daydream about our new baby, even while they are still in the womb, it's about the fun things we want to do with them, teach them, and share with them.
Dads are pros at playtime!!
So this week, I want to lean into that area of strength and help dads make the most of that playtime to set their kids up for long-term success.
Understanding the developmental milestones will allow you to feel more joy as you see your kids achieve the next steps in their developmental progression and to be an effective advocate when parents identify a concern during playtime.
Over the next few weeks we will work our way through different age ranges and talk about different practical activities you can do to help stimulate your child to develop in particular areas if there is a concern.
If you have any questions about how to integrate developmental concepts into playtime or have a success story of a child who is overcoming developmental challenges. I would love to answer your question or highlight your successes during this series of the podcast!!

The last few weeks have been full of the ups and downs of fatherhood. I had a couple of days where everyone in my family was sick, which meant more time together as a family, but it's not always easy to find joy in those extra moments together when you aren't feeling well or your kids are sick.
I also share the story of a cool professional opportunity I had and the mixed emotions that lead to when I told my son I had to travel for work. He was sad that I was going to be gone for a couple of days, but this was an important step for my career. These are the tough choices we have to make as dads, but it also shows the importance of being present with our kids when we do get time to spend with them.
I also make an exciting announcement in this episode that you will not want to miss!!

We are gearing up for our next big series on Development which will include deep dives into all the different areas of development and how dads can use their time with their kids to maximize Developmental Play.
Before we get to that, I wanted to spend some time talking about some wisdom I read in a few different places recently in regards to the words we use with ourselves, our wives, and our kids. It started with a tweet from Organziation Psychologist Adam Grant (no relation) who said, "You don't have to agree with everything I think, I don't even agree with everything I think." This got me thinking about how often we have thoughts flash in our mind that aren't even true or aren't consistent with our preferred world view. Most of the times we dismiss these thoughts immediately, but we should not lose sight of the fact that this happens. We will be more likely to recognize that those thoughts are out of place if we are spending time in meditation or prayer to process our thoughts and feelings in a consistent way.
Then I heard a homily from Fr. Mike Schmitz (host of the popular Bible in a Year Podcast) where he talked about a few more points about the relationship between our thoughts and our words as he reflected on the teaching in Matthew that from the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks.
It takes a little humility to acknowledge these three points, but I think it will help us all have more successful relationships.
So this week, we will take a look at the reasons why our words matter and how we can take control of the way we think about and talk about ourselves, our wives, and our kids.
We will talk about some habits you can develop to take control of these including a mantra I use when I am struggling with my kids behavior about getting CURIOUS not FURIOUS.
We then talk about a framework for determining whether we should say something out loud.
1. Is it true?
2. Is it actually what I believe? and
3. Will it lead to a positive change in the person I am trying to influence by expressing the thought?
I hope you find it helpful.
Today, I have a special request for you. If you found this episode helpful, don’t go leave a five star review, send to a buddy who you think this will help, that would mean even more to me than the review. And for those of you who have discovered this podcast through a friend, I’d love for you to reach out to me on social media or shoot me an email at [email protected]. I am particularly proud of this episode. I hope it will bring a lot of value and support to struggling parents out there and normalize men talking about mental health with each other. Postpartum depression is a really important topic that affects more moms and dads than most people recognize, so I wanted to bring someone on the show to talk a little bit about mental health challenges that both parents can face in the weeks and months leading up to birth and after baby comes home. I found a fellow physician who is a psychiatrist in training who has experience preventing, diagnosing, and treating the whole spectrum of mental health disorders. And he is a dad, just like us.
Peripartum mental health challenges can affect moms and dads and generally happen along a spectrum from so-called baby blues, worsening to peripartum depression and peripartum psychosis. Baby blues are very common, peripartum depression is estimated to affect 20% of moms and 10% of dads and can lead to loss of interest in things that once brought them joy. Peripartum psychosis is more specific to moms and is very rare, but very dangerous. This is an emergency to seek care for mom to keep her and baby safe.
This can happen to anyone. The more we can be share those vulnerable moments with our partners or other trusted friends, the more we may be able to see that we are not alone. We also need to know when we should seek more professional help. That is, when we are a risk to ourselves or others, or thoughts that are interfering with your ability to function normally in your day to day life.
Having a baby is among the most stressful things that we experience when measured on stress scales, it comes with a lot of transitions in schedules, responsibilities and identity and so we should have some grace with ourselves work to build supportive

Welcome back Dads!! A few weeks ago, we discussed the struggle most couples face with staying connected to each other and maintaining good communication and friendship as you take on the challenge of parenthood. Then, I came across a couple that had the key to success and I had to bring them on the show. Dr. George Naum and his wife, Vanessa, have been coaching married couples for over 25 years. In 2018 they began specializing in physician marriage coaching.
Through the years, Vanessa and Jeep have seen the best and the worst of marriages in the context of medical practice, coaching, and among their personal relationships. They have been married for nearly 30 years. I believe that if you have a goal, one of the best ways to achieve it is to find someone else who is doing it and learn from them. So that’s what I did.
I know this conversation will help encourage you in those long days and nights after a new baby and help you develop habits that will help build lifelong intimacy.
I hope you learn as much as I did from this couple who have been married for a long time, survived raising three kids and having both partners trying to build careers and pursue passions. This can sometimes feel impossible, or at least, overwhelming, so it is always reassuring to see a couple doing this well and trying hard to keep doing it well.
Here are a couple key takeaways from my conversation with Jeep and Vanessa!
1. Some of the challenges associated with having kids can be eased by having conversations about having kids before you get married or start trying for a baby. How many do you want? What will you expect from each other after baby is born? What support can you provide to each other? These answers may change over time, but you need to have at least started having these conversations early on.
2. You and your partner may have times when your confidence is shaken because you are going through tough times or you get worried about parenthood, but you can be a voice of confidence for your partner that you can do it together and that you have faith in their ability to be a great parent.
3. Parenting is a team sport when done well. Parenting will go so much smoother if you work together, communicate effectively and help each other out. Affirm the positive and empathize with the negative.
4. Detach yourself from the idea that there are certain tasks that are “wife” issues or “husband” issues. You can’t put your nose up at changing a diaper or warming a bottle.
5. It’s never too late to reclaim your marriage. If you are feeling “Disenchantment” with your relationship. Investing time in emotional and intellectual intimacy gets forgotten. Communicate how you are feeling and your needs and wants. But take note of your partner’s wants and needs as well.
Dr. George and Vanessa Naum can be found at www.bestfriendsagain.com and Dr. Naum’s book “What’s Forever For” is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.
If you would like more resources on maintaining a healthy relationship with your partner after kids, please let us know that you enjoyed this episode by leaving a five star review on your favorite podcast app or connecting with us on social media.

Today, we talk about what to expect from your visits with the pediatrician in the first 6-8 weeks of your baby’s life. we talked back in episode 8 about how to go about choosing a pediatrician, so if you are still struggling with that decision, please go back and listen to that episode. You will typically have a visit at 3-5 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months to get started. There are a few things you should expect to happen at each visit with your primary care pediatrician or other provider.
1. Your concerns: Bring a list of your concerns or questions about how your kid is doing. No matter if it seems silly or small. This is why we became pediatricians. To support you in your journey of parenthood. If we don’t address your concerns, you won’t hear anything else we say. So, let’s start with that.
2. Growth: This should include measuring weight, length, and head circumference. We will ask questions about nutrition, feeding frequency, physical activity, and how the child is doing when compared to birth weight and the growth curves. We want them to pick a line on the growth curve and stick with it.
3. Development: We will assess five domains of development – speech, fine motor, gross motor, problem solving, social/emotional. Usually with a formal assessment like the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) or similar tool. Early Intervention service are available for kids who are not meeting their milestones
4. Full Physical Exam: This should include a full skin exam and looking for subtle signs of medical problems, specifically those that are related to your concerns.
5. Anticipatory Guidance: This is the teaching or coaching you get from your pediatrician to help you know what challenges are coming around the corner and new exciting skills your child will learn before the next well visit.

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO GROW THE SHOW AND HELP MORE DADS DISCOVER OUR COMMUNITY IS TO LEAVE A FIVE STAR REVIEW FOR OUR PODCAST WHERE YOU CAN ASK A QUESTION THAT I CAN ANSWER ON THE SHOW LIKE THIS ONE:
HI DR. SCOTT, THE TODDLER YEARS CAN BE VERY NEGATIVE AND PARENTS CAN FIND THEMSELVES SAYING ‘NO’ LIKE 100 TIMES A DAY AND THAT IS WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW. HOW CAN I GET TO A PLACE WHERE I DON’T HAVE TO SAY NO SO OFTEN? IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY INTERACTION I HAVE WITH MY CHILD IS NEGATIVE.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS QUESTION. THIS IS A VERY COMMON CHALLENGE FOR PARENTS AND I WOULD SAY THAT THERE ARE THREE MAIN CATEGORIES OF ‘NO’S AND GETTING FAMILIAR WITH HOW OFTEN YOU USE EACH KIND CAN BE USEFUL. I CATEGORIZE THEM AS SAFETY NO’S PRACTICAL NO’S AND ANNOYED NO’S.
WORK TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR POSITIVE INTERACTIONS. SPENDING TIME TOGETHER BUILDING SOMETHING, WHERE THEY CAN’T DO IT “WRONG” AND THEY CAN BE CREATIVE AND EXPLORE.
IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION THAT YOU WANT ANSWERED ON THE SHOW, PLEASE REACH OUT VIA SOCIAL MEDIA OR SEND US AN EMAIL AT [email protected]. WE’D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR QUESTION AND HELP OTHER DADS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH THE SAME ISSUES.
THERE’S SOMETHING THAT’S BEEN ON MY HEART LATELY THAT I HOPE WILL HELP SOME OF YOU WHO ARE GOING THROUGH A TOUGH SEASON.
PEOPLE IN THE MIDWEST TALK ABOUT THE SEASONS AS SOMETHING THEY LOVE ABOUT LIVING HERE. I DIDN'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT AFTER MOVING FROM PHOENIX WHERE WHAT WE LOVED WAS SUNSHINE!! BUT I HAVE DEVELOPED A SENSE OF WHY THEY LOVE SEASONS. NOT THAT EACH ONE IS GREAT, BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN LIFE IS TOUGH AND THIS HELPS YOU APPRECIATE THE GOOD TIMES MORE.
I KNOW A LOT OF MY FELLOW DADS ARE GOING THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES RIGHT NOW AND I JUST WANT TO OFFER SOME ENCOURAGEMENT.
MANY TIMES, DADS IN PARTICULAR FEEL THE NEED TO “TOUGH IT OUT” OR “GO IT ALONE” DURING CHALLENGING SEASONS. BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE NEED HELP. WE SHOULD SEEK ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO WE TRUST.
SOMETIMES THESE SEASONS CORRELATE WITH CHALLENGES WITH FEEDING OR SLEEPING AND THEY CAN FEEL LIKE FOREVER: EVERY MEAL, EVERY NAP CAN TURN INTO AN EXPLOSION. APPROACH THESE CHALLENGES USING TEAMWORK.
FINALLY, TRY SHAKING UP THE ROUTINE. DO DAILY CHECK-INS WITH YOURSELF TO DETERMINE WHAT YOU NEED TO CARE FOR YOURSELF SO YOU CAN SHOW UP FOR YOUR FAMILY. DO YOU NEED MORE SLEEP? EXERCISE? PRAYER AND MEDITATION? ALL OF THE ABOVE? ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES COMES FROM ST. FRANCIS DE SALES "EVERYONE NEEDS HALF AN HOUR OF PRAYER EACH DAY UNLESS THEY ARE BUSY - THEN THEY NEED AN HOUR." IT IS WHEN WE LEAST HAVE TIME FOR SELF-CARE THAT WE MUST FIND A WAY TO MAKE TIME FOR IT.
WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER TO PROTECT TIME FOR ONE ANOTHER. MAYBE YOU NEED A DATE NIGHT TO RECONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER. MAKE A DAILY HABIT OF GRATITUDE AROUND YOUR PARTNER AND KIDS. SOME OF MY FAVORITE CONVERSATIONS WITH MY WIFE ARE SHARING FUNNY STORIES ABOUT THINGS OUR KIDS DID THAT MADE US SMILE. IT CAN REALLY PULL ME OUT OF A RUT.

This Week I Am Honored To Welcome Another Special Guest To The Show. Dr. Phil Boucher Is A Husband And Father Of Six Who Serves As A General Pediatrician Based In Lincoln, Nebraska. He Is Also A Fellow Podcaster With Two Podcasts, One For Parents Called “Raising Good Parents” And One For Pediatric Providers Called “Pediatrics 2.0.” I Have Found A Kindred Spirit In Dr. Boucher As He Describes His Mission As Focusing His Time And Professional Efforts On Educating Parents To Feel Confident And Reassured In Their Parenting Abilities, And I Couldn’t Have Said It Better Myself.
Today, Dr. Boucher Is Going To Talk To Us About Sleep. We Will Be Talking About A Variety Of Topics Including How To Adjust To The Newborn Sleep Cycles, How To Think About ‘so-Called’ Sleep Training, And Some Of The More Challenging Ages To Navigate Sleep Issues. Let’s Welcome Dr. Boucher To The Show.
In this episode, Dr. Boucher and I will discuss
HERE ARE MY THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE WITH DR. BOUCHER:
1) While Babies Sleep For 16-20 Hours Each Day, These Are Usually In Short 2-3 Hour Stretches, So It Isn’t Quite As Glamorous As It Seems. The More You Can Work Together With Your Partner During Those Long Nights, The More Smoothly It Will Go. Check In With Each Other And Take Shifts As Much As Possible. If Mom Is Breastfeeding, Then Do All Of The Other Things That You Can To Make Her Job As Easy As Possible Overnight. And Learn To Swaddle. This Will Help You Get Your Baby To Sleep Very Easily In Those Early Days And Doesn’t Require A Second Mortgage On Your Home Like Some Of These Other Expensive Sleep Solutions.
2) Your Bedtime Routine Should Be As Little As Possible To Achieve The Desired Outcome, Which Is A Sleeping Baby. It Doesn’t Have To Be Elaborate To Be Effective. Try Out Different Approaches To See What Works For Your Kids Until You Find A Sweet Spot.
3) For Older Kids, It Takes Consistency, Persistence, And Patience To Get Them To Stay In Bed. You Have To Consistently Put The Kid Back In Bed, And You Have To Be On The Same Page With Your Partner So That You Are Both Giving The Same Response. Patience To Not Give Any “Negative” Attention In Addition To Avoiding “Giving Into The 12th Request For Water.

Are you tired of fighting with your wife and kids over every little thing?
Are you stressed out that Valentine's Day is just around the corner and you just aren't sure how best to show your love to your partner?
Are you right in the dead of winter and everyone in your house is starting to feel that cabin fever and getting a little testy?
I thought this was a good time to explore a book I finished recently that is all about love!! The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman.
The Five Love Languages are
1. Words of Affirmation
2. Acts of Service
3. Receiving Gifts
4. Quality Time
5. Physical Touch
Being aware of these love languages and which ones speak most to your partner and children will make it easier to express your love in a way that your family will find meaningful and lead to safe and loving environment in your home. You can take a quiz to find your love language at 5lovelanguages.com or purchase the book at Amazon or wherever books are sold.

One of the biggest stressors for parents with every new baby is feeding. This is one that is probably equally stressful each time you bring home a new baby. Commonly, dads feel uncomfortable trying to help with breastfeeding, but there are lots of ways dads can support their partners in successful feeding. We are excited to welcome Dr. Laurie Jones (@doctordrmilk and www.drmilk.org) who has been supporting nursing moms for over twenty years as a primary care pediatrician.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays (*NSYNC style)!! This episode is part 2 of our Holiday Spectacular with Producer Phil. This week, we focus on steps we are taking to build memories and stay in the moment with our wives and kids, because our time with them is precious and limited. In the busy holiday season, it can be easy to get distracted with end-of-year reports at work or making sure we've bought, and wrapped, and hid all the presents for the family. We need to set aside intentional time with our family during the holidays and we share our tips for doing just that and not letting the craziness of the season overwhelm you.
If you enjoy the show, please consider sharing it with someone in your life who you think is a great dad. We all need a little support once in a while, and it's a great opportunity to tell him what a great job he's doing. This week, Dr. Scott dives into a tough topic. The desperation a father can feel trying to protect his kids, even while they are still in the womb. The feeling of loving someone so deeply that you would do anything to help them. Dr. Scott and his wife had this experience with their first baby. Miscarriage is experienced by countless couples every year. If you've experienced a pregnancy loss, know that you are not alone and that you can get support from those around you who have likely had similar experiences.
