Andrew Ahn's remake of "The Wedding Banquet" had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances from its delightful cast, sharp writing, and sensitive direction. "The Shrouds" had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it received mixed reviews but has steadily been growing in appreciation (as all David Cronenberg films do) as it screened at more film festivals, including TIFF and NYFF Film Festivals. The film is Cronenberg's most personal to date as it deals with the grief he went through following the passing of his beloved wife of nearly 40 years. "Warfare" is the newest film by director Alex Garland, who co-directed it with Iraq war veteran Ray Mendoza. It's a re-enactment of an encounter Mendoza and his platoon experienced on November 19th, 2006, in the wake of the Battle of Ramadi, as they use memories from Navy SEAL team Alpha One to reconstruct the event in real-time as it happened for one of their fellow soldiers who has no memory of what took place that day. "The Brutalist" and "The Room Next Door" had their world premieres at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, where they received critical acclaim, with the former winning the festival's Best Director prize while the latter won the coveted Golden Lion. Both films have something in common, though; they each starred acclaimed character actor Alessandro Nivola. Revered for many years for his performances in film, television, and theater, the 52-year-old actor starred opposite Golden Globe winner Adrien Brody in Corbet's film as Attila, a Hungarian Jew who has assimilated into America and is helping Lazslo get settled in with his custom furniture business. In Almodovar's film, he plays a policeman who confronts Ingrid (played by Julianne Moore) about the apparent suicide of her friend Martha (played by Tilda Swinton). "I'm Still Here" had its world premiere at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, where it received strong reviews for its true story about a mother (Fernanda Torres) and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), during the military dictatorship in Brazil. Adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva's 2015 memoir of the same name, the script won the Best Screenplay award at Venice and has gone on to receive multiple nominations for Best International Feature Film (it is Brazil's official selection for the Oscar in this category at the 97th Academy Awards) and won Torres the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. "Civil War" was released last spring to a positive yet somewhat polarizing reception from critics and audiences as its story drew some controversy while the technical crafts were lauded with praise. The film grossed over $126.2 million worldwide, becoming A24's second-highest-grossing film to date, and has been nominated for the American Cinema Editors Awards and won the British Independent Film Craft Awards for Best Sound and Effects. And now, the film's visual effects have been shortlisted by the Academy's visual effects branch for the 97th Academy Awards.
