Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod, this time looking DTV flicks starring rappers. First we're looking at "Turf War" aka "Lady Rider" with Fat Joe, and a character named "Old Timer Dave." This one's definitely on the junkier side. Then we have "Blood Money," which stars Pitbull. This might be one of the best films we've seen in our series of movies, but is that saying much? Finally, our spotlight on a fight looks at the fight between Peter Weller and Kurtwood Smith in RoboCop.
You can find Ty at comeuppancereviews.net, or on the Comeuppance Reviews podcast, which you can subscribe to on most major podcatchers.

In this episode I'm joined once again by Chris "The Brain" Kacvinsky from Bulletproof Action, and this time we're going "meta" before the kids starting describing everything as "meta," with "Invasion Force." We look at what makes AIP films great, and how we found our way to them. We then break the movie down, as this scrappy film crew tries to defeat the nefarious Richard Lynch and his militia!

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this special episode I look at the Blade franchise with "Blade," "Blade II," and "Blade: Trinity." For the first one, I look at how this movie was the first successful big-screen Marvel film, but also how it served as a bridge between the 90s darker comic book era to the 2000s bigger budget hero-driven era. With the second film, we look at how Snipes keeps the ball rolling, and how del Toro as director gave the film an extra gear. Finally, with the third film, we look at why it was such a big miss, but then the overall legacy of the franchise, and where it could go next.

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time "Out for a Kill." Some of the funniest stuff ever in a Seagal DTV flick, this is what you came for. Monkey Style Kung Fu climbing up walls, people being beheaded by flying samurai swords thrown from second story windows, and Seagal as an archaeology professor.

In this episode I'm joined by Freddie Young from Full Moon Reviews as we look at the holiday horror sequel "Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2." Before that, we look at the year that was in theatrical releases, the winners and losers, and what we expect from next year. Then with the film, we get into how much of the first film was recycled, and then what we get that's new that's so iconic. "It's garbage day!"

We start with a nostalgic conversation on toys from the past, including action figures and lunch boxes. "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we finish our look at the Beverly Hills Cop franchise with "Beverly Hills Cop III" and "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F." For the first one, I look at how the film went bad, but also some of it's redeeming qualities, and how it might have gotten better over time. Then with the second one, I look at why we went so long before it was released, the length, and how hockey, plus a star with a plural first name, plus a helicopter explosion, is the best combination ever.

Is it better than his turn in the Seagal flick "Absolution?" Then with "Black Lotus," we're firing up the Grillo again with another Frank Grillo flick. "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Beverly Hills Cop franchise with "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Beverly Hills Cop II." For the first one, I look at how the film started as a Stallone vehicle, then moved to Eddie Murphy, and why it all works so well and is one of my favorite actioners ever. Then with the second one, I look at why it worked too, and how if the film was made today, they'd tack on another 45 minutes to it. I also talk about an experience I had on the Flix bus from Boston to NYC.

"Easy! Eas-ee!" Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2003's "The Foreigner." A product of its time, we see early 2000s action in all its glory, from techno music to fancy edits, and to that mix we add a Seagal who wasn't as lazy as he became, but lazy enough.

And then we finish things off with the last movie in the series, and talk about why it's the last one in the series. For the second one, I get into why I like it, but also why I think it's a great action movie, but not a classic. Todd Liebenow from Forgotten Filmcast is back on, this time to discuss "Deadly Prey," the AIP classic. We look at the sillier aspects and the brutal aspects, and explore whether or not this film is more self-aware than it seems. I'm also reminded of a Little League teammate's older brother who tried to gross us out by eating worms; and we discuss whether or not New York Seltzer helped fund the film, or just gave the production beverages.

In this special episode, we're joined by Jon from After Movie Diner and Miscellaneous Plumbing Fixtures to discuss the Jean-Claude Van Damme DTV flick "Inferno" aka "Desert Heat." Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2007's "Flight of Fury," which was a rip-off of Dudikoff's "Black Thunder." As always, we look at the good, the bad, and the problematic--and as is often the case, the latter two are much better represented. Scott also gives us some background on the UK actors who made the trip to Romania to act opposite Seagal's stunt double, and the volume of padding in the film takes us on a tangent about American football.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Superman pre-DCEU films with Superman and Superman II. For the first one, I look at how this might be the best comic book film ever, and why it deserves that title. For part two, I look at both the "Lester cut" and the Donner cut, which one I prefer, and areas where I felt this one could've been better, regardless of whose cut it was.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod. First we look at a "Final Kill" from the director of "Most Dangerous Game," which has a dash of Billy Zane and a smidge of Johnny Messner. Second, we look at "Bloodline Killer," a thriller with a baddie unironically called "Skulleton." "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I'm doing a one-off look at "Deadpool & Wolverine." I start with the context of how we got to this film, going back to Deadpool's first appearance in 1990, how he grew from villain to anti-hero, and the history of attempts at adaptations before we finally got it in 2016. From there I get into the movie, looking at what worked, and why it worked. Finally, I finish with a look at where Marvel is now, and how this film fits with the recent announcement that RDJ will be playing Dr. Doom.

In this episode I'm joined once again by Will from Exploding Helicopter, this time to look at the Cirio H. Santiago post-apocalyptic flick "Equalizer 2000," starring Richard Norton. We get into the hallmarks of the post-apocalyptic film overall, how Italian directors and Cirio H. Santiago tried to mine Mad Max's success, plus go on a tangent about the differences in American and European sports. In addition, my opening thought extols the virtues of the morning matinee, and I give some theories on why theater-goers are so bad now.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Star Trek original cast franchise with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." With the first film, I open with a short history of the blockbuster at that time, starting with "Jaws" in '75, and how Star Trek fit into that. I also get into the idea that the odd-numbered films are bad and the even-numbered ones good, and whether or not that holds up with part III. With the second film, I talk about how it wasn't originally one of my favorites, but how this viewing I really enjoyed it; I also look at how "End Game" follows some of its premise, and chat a little bit about the Challenger explosion that happened the same year this film was released.

Before we do though we get into why recent DTV action hasn't been as solid overall as DTV horror. "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Predator franchise with the two Alien vs. Predator films. With the first one, I talk about the gap in time between Predator films, and how this was a film Predator fans were waiting for, but maybe not so much Aliens fans. I also chat about Predators that aren't hunters, like engineers and anthropologists. For the second one, I talk about where this one might miss the mark from the first one, but despite the poor critic reception, still did well at the box office.

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2006's "Attack Force." We get into the history on this one, with how Seagal and screenwriting buddy Joe Halpin made one movie, but the distribution company wanted something else, so it was re-edited, reshot, and redubbed. Was worth it? Especially with the person they had dubbing over Seagal's voice?

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for two more straight to streamers, this time we're looking at a third Daniel Zirilli film, "Hollow Point," starring Luke Goss and Jay Mohr. And then for the second one, we look at the Tito Ortiz/Cris Cyborg actioner, "Operation Black Ops," and try to see if we can figure out is going on with that one. "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the MCU Phase 2 with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man." Before that, I talk about the flop that was the 2015 "Fantastic Four" film. Then with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" I look at how that film compares with the first one, and how James Spader as Ultron's voice might be my favorite baddie so far. Finally, with "Ant-Man," I look at this as almost an after-thought film sandwiched between the Avengers film and the first film of Phase 3, "Captain America: Civil War," and then I further my thought from last week about how the MCU audience has aged out some, and how that affected the floor for movies like this going forward.

In this episode Sean Malloy of "I Must Break This Podcast" is back, and we're discussing the Van Damme film "Replicant." "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're finishing our look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1, with "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Avengers." In the first segment, I go over the history of Captain America and previous adaptations, and how important this one was to the overall success of this first phase of the MCU. Then I looked "the Avengers," where the only precedent I could find was the Laff-a-Lympics. That inevitably leads me to a rant on "retconning" and "canon," which I blame for why we haven't gotten the X-Men in the MCU yet.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1, with "Iron Man 2" and "Thor." I pick up where we left off in 2008, and look at what happen in 2009 with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and the purchase of Marvel by Disney. From there I look at why "Iron Man 2" worked well, and also how it was unique as a sequel because it was not only working to further Iron Man's story, but also set up the events leading to "Avengers." And then with "Thor" I look at Thor as a Marvel hero, and how incredible I think it is that he's become this big. I also look at "X-Men: First Class," which came out that same year, and how Marvel Studios was able to make "Thor" into someone who could lead movies that were as big or bigger than X-Men films.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1, with "Iron Man" and "Incredible Hulk." I start by going into the history of live action adaptations of Marvel comics, plus what DC was doing, and how that led to Marvel Studios creating their own films, of which Iron Man was the first. From there I'll get into what made Iron Man work so well, and how it would eventually lead to Marvel changing the game and coming out on top above DC. In the second segment, I look at the Incredible Hulk. I talk about the old TV show and the impact it had on me, also my own experience collecting comics, and why the Ang Lee one didn't work for me. And then I wrap the episode talking about why we haven't had another Hulk film, and the lessons I think Disney could learn from how 2008 was so successful, versus the relative lack of success they've had this year.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're finishing our series looking at the Bloodfist films with "Bloodfist VII: Manhunt," "Bloodfist VIII: Trained to Kill," and "Bloodfist 2050." With part VII, we look at how this continues the theme of Wilson against the world with a woman helping him out, also Art Camacho as fight coordinator, and how this feels like part of the end of that golden age of DTV action between the late 80s and early 90s. For part VIII, we talk about how, even one year later, this feels like something from a totally different time. We also get more into where Wilson's career goes from here, that this feels like the beginning of the end of his great era as a DTV lead. Finally, we not only look at "Bloodfist 2050," but I get into where this franchise could have gone, and wonder why Corman didn't slap the name "Bloodfist" on more titles after this.

In this episode we're solo again as I continue our series looking at the Bloodfist films with "Bloodfist V: Human Target" and "Bloodfist VI: Ground Zero." With part V, we look at Wilson as a now established DTV star, and this paradigm that we see in a lot of Bloodfist movies starting with IV--Wilson against the world with a woman helping him out. In this special Halloween solo podcast, I count down my ten favorite horror films. With each one, I give some background on why that movie is special to me. Some hints on ones that made the cut: "It's rainin' Depp, hallelujah it's rainin' Depp!"; one of the greatest dance scenes of all time; and "did you have to drink some chuck?"

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back to discuss two more DTV films from Tubi. First we look at "Overrun" starring Omid Zader, and featuring a couple mainstays on our podcast, Bruce Dern and Johnny Messner. After that we look at "Phoenix," written and directed by Daniel Zirilli, and starring Natalie Eva Marie and Neal McDonough. In addition to that, we look at what we've been watching lately, chat about Brett's visit to Philly and our meet-up at a local VHS pop-up sale, and have a discussion about eating a good soup, and not wanting to be interrupted while trying to enjoy it at the optimum temperature.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we finish our series looking at the Expendables films with "The Expendables 3" and "Expend4bles." With part 3, I look at how this was sauteed in wrong sauce, but tried to understand why Stallone went the way he did with it. Then with part 4, I talk about whether or not this film should've even been made, and if this was the movie worth waiting 10 years for.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we start our series looking at the Expendables films with "The Expendables" and "The Expendables 2." With the first one, I get into some of the context in which the film was released, when we as action fans were looking for exactly what Stallone delivered to us; I also look at how this film brought Dolph back into the mainstream. Then with the second one, I talk about Van Damme as the baddie and the great job he did, plus how Stallone delivered again on what we as action fans wanted out of these movies..

It's a Massachusetts theme in this episode, where I'm joined once again by Ty from Comeuppance Reviews to discuss two films with a connection to the Bay State. "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we finish our series looking at the Kickboxer films with "Kickboxer: Vengeance" and "Kickboxer: Retaliation." With the first one, we look at what this reboot meant after 20 years from part 5. How does Moussi compare to other leads in the series? Then with the second one, I talk about how this movie was too long, all the names in it, and whether the baddie worked or not. Finally, we wrap by looking at Van Damme's career arc between the first film and the last one.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we continue our series looking at the Kickboxer films with "Kickboxer 3: The Art of War," "Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor," and "Redemption: Kickboxer 5." With part 3, we look at ways in which this was sauteed in wrong sauce, the low-rent Joe Izuzu for a baddie, and Sasha Mitchell's too sweet pants in the final scene. Then with part 4, I talk about Albert Pyun's return to the series, and his darker take on Kickboxer with Sasha Mitchell. What if he had had a chance to make his Kickboxer sequels he wasn't able to make? Finally, in part 5, we discuss Dacascos's martial arts, and James Ryan's baddie, plus speculate on why nothing further was done with Kickboxer for 20 years after this one. Also throughout the episode, we look at IMDb lists of what aired on WSBK TV 38 in Boston during the months of April, June, and July of 2001.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we finish our series looking at the Fast and Furious films with "F9: The Fast Saga" and "Fast X." I look at how F9 (which I call Fast 9 to make it easier) is one of the comfort food franchises people were looking for when theaters opened up again in 2021. Then with Fast X, I talk about my first trip to the theater to see a blockbuster in years, and how much that experience has changed since my last time going. I also compare the tail end of the franchise to a sitcom that may have been holding on too long to make it to rerun syndication, complete with going to space being the jumping of the shark, and the addition of the kid to the cast in Fast X--all we needed was that "very special episode" to make it complete.

I look at how Fate of the Furious is able to maintain the success of Furious 7, but also the turmoil that comes at the end of production when Hobbs and Shaw was announced. Then with Hobbs and Shaw, I talk about why this one doesn't do as well. Was it the quality of the film? Were we seeing the "Disney Effect" that also crushed Terminator: Dark Fate that year? Maybe a combination of both?

In this episode we continue the series looking at the Fast and Furious films, moving to "Fast and Furious" and "Fast Five." I try to set the stage for what the film industry was like when both films come out, look at how the franchise pivots from racing films to big budget blockbusters, and how that pivot allows the films to thrive at a time when Disney was starting to consolidate its hold on the industry. Currently you can rent "Renegades" via VOD here in the States, and then on January 30th it'll be available to stream in the UK. Check it out as soon as you can!

The DTVC podcast is back, and I'm joined once again by Ty from Comeuppance as we do another Bruce double dip, this time looking at two from 2022,
"Wrong Place" and "Corrective Measures." In addition, we both had a chance to watch the new Dolph flick "Section 8," so we discussed that as well. Finally, we try out a new bit, where I interview a "special guest."

The DTVC podcast is back, and we're wrapping up the year in style with Dolph Lundgren's "Command Performance." I'm joined by Scott Murphy of the New Horror Express and All 90s Action, All The Time! podcasts, as we look at this Dolph directed DTV classic, where he plays a drummer who's the fly in the ointment of a Die Hard scenario, this time at a concert venue. Those baddies won't know what hit them, because, as Dolph says, "Dyin' is easy, rock n' roll is hard."
You can find Scott's New Horror Express here: https://newhorrorexpress.com/ and All 90s Action, All The Time! podcasts here on Anchor (https://anchor.fm/scott-murphy9), plus both are on iTunes and other major podcatchers.

In this episode we're looking at the Dolph Lundgren talking dog Christmas movie from 2021, "Pups Alone," and who better to join us than Mitch from the Video Vacuum. Spoiler alert, this one was a bit of a rough sit, so after we're done going over where we felt things went wrong, we cleanse the palate with a discussion on the Dan Haggerty Christmas classic, "Elves". You can find Mitch at the Video Vacuum at https://thevideovacuum.blogspot.com/ and his latest book, The Bloody Book of Horror, the perfect addition for any horror collection, at https://www.amazon.com/Bloody-Book-Horror-Mitch-Lovell-ebook/dp/B07B6TBVG1

We're joined once again by Will from Exploding Helicopter (who also came up with the title for this episode) as we look at two DTV films that featured former James Bonds. We have "Made Men" featuring Timothy Dalton as a local sheriff in a small town, along with the great James Belushi as a guy who may or may not have stolen money from the mob; and then "Live Wire," featuring Pierce Brosnan as a bomb expert who's up against a new kind of explosive that involves humans as bombs! You can find the Exploding Helicopter podcast on iTunes and other major podcatchers, and on his site, https://www.explodinghelicopter.com/ for all things, including links to social media, like his fantastic Twitter account.

This episode I'm joined by Ty from Comeuppance Reviews to discuss two Bruce Willis films, "American Siege" and "A Day to Die." With "American Siege," we look at the myriad Poor Man's versions of actors in the film, try to make sense of the story, and how Willis fits in. Then with "A Day to Die," it's not just about Willis, but also the deconstruction of Johnny Drama, plus we fire up the Grillo to discuss Frank Grillo's role in the film. You can find Ty on the Comeuppance Reviews podcast, which is on most major podcatchers, and the Comeuppance Reviews website at comeuppancereviews.net.

In this episode I'm joined once again by screenwriter and cinephile Tom Jolliffe, as we discuss the great Mark Dacascos and his classic "Drive." We talk about what makes this movie such an action mainstay, why it may not have gotten a theatrical release, and why theatrical success has eluded Dacascos as well. Tom's latest film, "When Darkness Falls," is currently available to stream for free in the US on Tubi and Peacock, or you can buy it on DVD; and you can find Tom's articles on Flickering Myth here: https://www.flickeringmyth.com/author/tom-jolliffe/

In our first episode on Anchor FM, I'm going solo to look at three Bruce Willis films, "Out of Death," "Hard Kill," and "Vendetta." How did I make out? I think the word "slog," came up a few times, as did "enough material for an episode of a syndicated action show." I also discuss Willis's legacy, and how these kinds of films may or may not have an effect, plus, have we reached the tipping point with these movies?
