A concise weekly discussion of whiskey we are drinking, watches we are wearing, and featured segments from Fresh Forum Finds, to Omega Opinions, and Defunct Designs. We are enthusiasts, not experts.
The podcast Whiskey&Watches is created by Spence, Spangler, & Buzz. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Spence and the Buzz man are back together for the first time in almost three months! We pick up the mantle posed to us by our friends over at Spirit of Time podcast and offer some of our non-watch favorite follows! Enjoy!
In this week’s episode, our friend Mitch comes back to discuss the finer (and I do mean finer) details of the current Speedmaster and previous generation. We have a lovely conversation at a local brewery, so please excuse the background noise. Cheers!

After a not so brief summer holiday WE'RE BACK! Spence and Buzz get a portion of the band back together to discuss watches, life, other things. We will try to be more consistent for all of you listener(s) out there! Enjoy!
It has been a minute (or at least six weeks) but Spence and the Buzz Man are back! We catch up on TWO new watch additions and other fun items, enjoy and keep all them digits!
Semi back to our original lineup and original format. Spence and Spangler try to keep it brief and cover some new releases, golf, and other shenanigans. Work's been a lot lately, so just nice to have a quick decompression session.
Apologies for some of the technical delays as well, someone's internet wasn't up to the challenge!
On this week's episode, Spence and Spangler talk about how trading a watch is great in theory, but can be a bit more challenging to execute. We also get Spangler's belated reaction to some of the new watches that have come out of Watches&Wonders. Enjoy!
Yes, we are riffing on the title from our friends at Spirit of Time. We have the original Buzz though, so it is fair. Spence and Buzz talk about W&W, the VPC type 37 HW, among other shenanigans. Enjoy!
This week's episode Spence has the opportunity to speak with Fratello writer, and watch brand founder, Thomas Van Straaten to talk about his passion project, VPC watches.
It has been a minute since we have had a brand owner on the show, but having spent some time with the VPC Type 37 HW you will see that it has left us thoroughly impressed. Thomas's eye for detail, including developing a unique typeface for the 37 HW, leads to a watch that punches well above its weight and is more than just a spec sheet watch.
Overall, the fit, finishing, and detail of the Type 37 HW make the wearing experience superb. It is one of those watches that you only pick up these details having worn it. It was a pleasure getting to know Thomas better. If you have a chance, find a way to check out the Type 37 HW, you will not be disappointed!
This week Spence and Buzz are trying to do our topic justice. It takes a minute, but we do finally discuss one brand in particular that we think is significantly underrated. Enjoy!
Well, Spence and Spangler talk some predictions from the crown as well as some SEASONAL stuff from GS. Enjoy!
Despite not publishing an episode for a couple of weeks, we have the nerve to discuss streaks! Namely, which brand has been on a bit of a tear as of late.
In this week's episode Spence, Spangler, and Buzz are joined by our friend Mike Stockton from Fratello watches! We talk about what the future of Universal Geneve under Breitling ownership might look like. We also each build a watch (Spangler's idea) based on components of existing timepieces. A sort of everyman's Moser Swiss Legend concept. Enjoy!
This episode we riff on the concept of the worst watch in the world. We do this in the vein of the old Top Gear, and the answer(s) may surprise you. We even consider a Rolex making the cut! Enjoy!
On this week's episode the gang is all here, and they throw down. We each pick (semi-sarcastic) new year's resolutions for each other. No holds were barred.
We would like to wish each of our 12 listeners a very happy and prosperous new year. We had some fun this week recording with our first listener, @motorjon68 at a new haunt. We hope you enjoy!
In this episode we discuss release strategies from watch brands, and why holiday releases might not really be a thing.
We hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday season!
This episode we have Spence and Buzz talking about new watches, but also new watch BRAND acquisitions. We talk about the recent Breitling acquisition of Universal Geneve and what it might mean for Watches & Wonders 2024. Enjoy!
Well you have the OG lineup this week, and just in time for the weekend. We get into some good old fashioned debates on certain topics such as consolidation, Grand Seiko, and a more. There is also a good amount of sidebar conversation, if you like that sort of thing. Enjoy!
Rumors of our demise have been grossly overstated. We have, however, had a busy November. We do apologize, dear listeners, for leaving you in the lurch for so long. While the time off was busy, there was a new watch added to Spence's collection. We wax poetically about it in this episode. We hope you enjoy!
This week's episode is a lot of fun. Spence sits down with Nick, from StrapHabit. We talk about the origin of the pink strap collaboration with Brodinkee, watch collecting, and where he wants to take his brand next.
This episode was a long time coming, as we have actually met IN PERSON before (crazy right?)! It was great to catch up with Nick and all of the cool things he is doing.
There is still time to get your pink straps to support Men Wear Pink, so be sure to check them out soon!
If you have made it this far go check out StrapHabit.com and enter promocode WHISKEY15 for a discount!
Enjoy!
This episode has been teased, and for good reason. We are delighted to have our buddy Chris Sohl back on the show. Chris has been rather busy since we last spoke with him. As an avid diver and watch enthusiast, he has had the opportunity to be at, or in some cases organize, some pretty cool events in which his two passions intersect. Whether it be Wind Up In a Lake, the recent Tudor FXD launch, or a Mark V dive with a special meaning. His experiences have allowed us to live vicariously through him at times, and his storytelling is superb. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!
It has been a minute, but we are finally back. Spence and the Buzzman talk new releases from Seiko, Certina, Blancpain, and Zenith. We also have some personal fresh forum finds, and we talk a bit about beauty and objectivity in watches. Enjoy!
Sundials aside, we talk about some watches that have caught our eye, and a friend who has a new pick up. Enjoy!
I think we have used this episode title before, but it is fitting. We are coming to you live (almost) on the release of the new Pelagos FXD (not on location though). Keeping it simple for this one, just Spence, Spangler, and Tudor Talk.
The title says it all. Two things that were previously unfathomable (well, maybe one, but still) happened recently and we have yet to talk about them. So we talk about them. Enjoy!
Sad news this week, legendary host of The Price Is Right, Bob Barker, passed away at the age of 99. While we are all saddened by the news, we felt a tribute was in order. So we brought friend of the show @Brodinkee back to play host to a little competition between Spence and Buzz. This was a lot of fun to record, and despite having to do most of the work, we think @Brodinkee enjoyed playing host. Enjoy!
This episode is a lot of fun. While Spangler is away, Spence and Buzz play with a fun idea. We didn't even get through all of our thoughts on this, so see if there is a follow up episode!
We talk about the evolution of watch tastes within specific watch categories. How one might start out with a Seiko and end up with a Submariner! This was a lot more fun than either of us anticipated, we hope you enjoy!
This episode is the first time we have had brothers as guests on the podcast. Surprising that it has taken us this long, but it was worth the wait. We have local friends Zack and Mitch who both have influenced each other along their collecting journey. Additionally, many of you may have run across Mitch's website, Menswearmusings.com! We get the inside scoop on his journey and passion for tailored clothing, the experience of going to Pitti Uomo in Florence, and how welcoming the menswear community can be. There is a significant amount of overlap here with watch collecting, so these topics seem to fit like a well tailored jacket, enjoy!
This week's episode was pitched to us (and Wrist Cheese Radio) by a listener local to us in Cincinnati. We all have watches that fill a gap in our collection, and for that reason, there are other watches we do not own. In some ways, this is the collection we could have had. It is our doppelganger collection. Enjoy!
In this weekend's episode we cover it all! Fresh Forum Finds, traveling with watches, other nonsense. Enjoy!
In this episode Spence and Buzz talk the new Tag Heuer Skipper, the new Tissot PRX 35mm, and some other things we have tried on recently. Enjoy!
This episode reunites the original dynamic duo after some time spent as ships passing in the night. Spence and Spangler are back at it! We are sadly without the third leg of our tripod as Buzzman had to sit this one out. That said, we are getting into some new releases and a unique thread that unites all of them. Something that frustrates us, and we are sure frustrates many of you. Enjoy!
Spence is joined once again by an esteemed guest host. Now 5 time participant on the podcast, @ryanwearswatches, joins to talk about watch alternatives. Whether you are looking at a vintage Constellation vs. a Tissot PRX, a smooth bezel Datejust vs. a Tudor Black Bay 36 on jubilee, there are plenty of good watches to discuss. Spence is very intrigued by a new Seiko 62mas re-edition compared to his own SPB149. Enjoy!
This week's episode is a different vibe from the last two weeks because Spence is back! He is flying solo from a W&W perspective, so he had to call in his wingman from the west coast. Matt McD from Spirit of Time joins to talk about all of the new releases, some cool stuff we have tried on, some collection conundrums, and the problem with watches under $1,500. Enjoy!
This week we are without Spence again. Do not worry, he will be back. BUT! This means you all are treated to our buddy MotorJon! Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
In this week's episode Buzz and Spangler are sans Spence. So I have no idea what was discussed. Enjoy!
On this episode we are thrilled to sit down with co-founder Zac and plank owner Alex to discuss their watch collecting journey. What is neat about this episode is how the collector bug spawned something greater, service for those called to serve. If you haven't heard about AWWC (and if you listen to this and other podcasts we know you have) you should check out what they are doing as a community and charitable organization.
For those of you who listen to the Spirit of Time podcast and Wrist Cheese Radio you will know what we are talking about today. The beverage of choice of one James Bond 007. While it might take us a bit to get there, we promise that we will lean in heavy on the cocktails and heavy on the banter. Enjoy!
This week, we talk bezels! Which bezel is best? Do you prefer timing, time zones, unidirectional, bi-directional, friction, click, or compass? What is your preference? Hit us up!
This episode has a theme. It is surprising it took us this long to have an episode totally dedicated to the unsung integrated bracelet sport watch from Omega, but we finally did it. This one is for the astronomers who share our opinion.
Not only do we each feature 3 constellations (that is 9 for those of you keeping score at home) but there is also a gentlemen's agreement, of which we will surely hold ourselves accountable.
Enjoy!
So Spence is doing the show notes even though he wasn't here for this one. He also hasn't listened to the episode, just enough to ensure the mix was decent. He IS aware, however, of the topic.
You ever have an expense pop up? Replacing/patching a tire? Leaky faucet? Garage door opener quit on you? Of course, we call have. As an addict...collector, we always tend to think of what watch we would have rather purchased instead with that very specific sum of money.
Enjoy!
In this week's episode we talk recent local travels, specifically to our neighboring state of Kentucky. Spence and the family took in the sights at Keeneland's Spring Meet while Buzz and a buddy sampled the fares in Frankfort. If you are near the area you will enjoy this one!
Stay with us here. While this episode is musically inclined, it isn't what you might expect. Given our preference for different musical instruments, Spangler and Spence talk about how that aspect might either influence or shine a light on how our collections have evolved over time. Another fun conversation we hope you enjoy!
In this week's episode we talk about the concept of a signature watch. While we have collections that speak to what we like, several of us were inspired by one watch associated with an influential figure in our lives. Whether it is a family member, cinematic hero, or public figure, we have one watch that we associate with that person. How does that influence our collection? How do we think about our signature time piece? How do you think about this? Let us know!
This week we have a special guest, our Man in Geneva, @moorewatches. Our buddy was recently at Watches & Wonders, so of course we had to have him on for a chat. Enjoy!
Let's see if that was enough clickbait for everyone. This episode is coming a bit earlier than we all expected because two brands might have dropped some teaser videos. We decided it would be good to publish our reactions to them BEFORE the watches drop on Monday. There is some decent analysis of the Rolex teaser, as you can expect. There is also one SCORCHING HOT TAKE for the Tudor teaser. Let us know what you think!
On this episode we discuss our take on watch shows. Do we need them? Are trade shows necessary? Should you be able to purchase watches at them? All of this and more this week!
We had such a great set of content we had to split it into two episodes. The rest of the gang checks in with their origin stories!
This episode is a two parter, so catch the second one next week! We went to the SPCA Cincinnati with some friends from our local Redbar chapter to have a watch meet, donate and sample a few bottles, and of course talk watches. This was a fun event with a varied group of characters. Some have been on the show in the past, others this is their first podcast. It was an absolute blast getting to do this in person, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
That's right, we made it to episode 151, the highest proof episode yet!
Jokes aside, we have some fun pondering what might come out in the next few weeks at an upcoming event known as Watches & Wonders. Dig the alliteration, almost as if someone else thought of that concept first...
We can't believe we have made it to 150! Three years and 150 episodes. Thank you listeners, thank you guests! We wouldn't be where we are without you. It has been a wild ride, but we count ourselves lucky to be continue to be able to hang out with you on a weekly basis. Here's to another 150!
This episode has a bit of a different feel. Spangler is on call, Spence has almost lost his voice, so Buzz is shouldering the load. The discussion here, aside from our many side bars, is the price increases that we have seen over the last two years in the watch industry. Inflation ran hot in 2022, but watch prices ran hotter. We dig into if there are still values out there at MSRP. We realize that luxury goods serve no value purpose, so this is subjective. However, the Midwesterner in us can't help but feel that if we are going to spend our hard earned money on something, we don't want to fee like we are overpaying. We hope you enjoy!
This week we have the pleasure of welcoming our buddy Ryan back to the show. Ryan has just made a big purchase, and that has changed his perspective a bit. We talk about the evolution of collecting, the upcoming watch fairs, and how our views change when we finally go after the big one.
This week's episode goes back to where it all began. Richter&Phillips Jewelers in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is where Spence and Buzz met Spangler. This is where the we go our name.
If it wasn't for this, we wouldn't have met the fun crew at Redbar Cincy, and we wouldn't be chatting with @motorjon68 tonight. That would make us very sad. This isn't quite the anniversary episode because not enough hosts were available, but I think this sets up that episode quite nicely. As always, it is a pleasure to hang out with our buddy Jon, and I am sure you will enjoy this one almost as much as we enjoyed recording.
Huge thanks to the folks at R&P for letting us use the vault. We can't say enough about this place. If you are in the area, or are just visiting stop by. You won't regret it!
This episode feels a bit overdue. As big of a James Bond fan as Spence is (Buzz and Spangler appreciate everyone's favorite 00 as well) having the chance to sit down with Lorenzo to chat about his collecting journey was an absolute pleasure.
As we have done in the past in our Collector Conversation series, we chat about what sparked the itch for Lorenzo, how he finally bit the bullet, and at what point he realized he was a watch collector. His collection is truly a collection, with a definite theme, and it was an excellent conversation that crossed from the movie series, Omega, and everything in between. As you can tell by the length of this episode, this was a fun chat that we know you will enjoy!
And as it always seems with all of our guests...
@Omegabondwatches will return...
This week’s episode was supposed to drop last week. Somehow it never got posted, for which I apologize.
We chat what watches, if they came out, would we do everything in our power to make happen. Let us know what you think!
This week, the guys are thrilled to welcome back friend of the show Mike Stockton from Fratello Watches! It has been a minute since he was last on the show, but it is always an excellent conversation when we all get a chance to hang out with Mike.
Mike recently paid a visit to Wind Vintage as he is currently stateside, so we chat about some of the interesting pieces that Eric has currently. This is a fun replacement segment for our Fresh Forum Finds.
We also chat about what all of us still enjoy about the hobby, and what we might be looking at next. The idea of collecting or curating watches vs. wearing and enjoying them is another topic that we cover a bit. We also chat about where our collecting journey might take us next.
We hope you enjoy!
Well, we have come to the end of another year. While we aren't quite to our three year anniversary yet, we are wrapping up 2022. We figured that while we aren't ready to predict what 2023 will bring yet, we do want to revisit three things in 2022 that we wish would have either happened or gone differently. Not exactly the episode we were expecting to get for the end of the year, but then again, these things either didn't happen or didn't go as we would have hoped in 2022, so that is only fair!
The title really gets down to it. We each pick our favorite watch of 2022. Let us know what you think!
This week's episode is a juxtaposition of two interesting topics. First, we talk CPO Rolex. There are a few different takes on what it could mean for the "secondary" watch market, grey market dealers, and overall supply of watches. There are some other, ancillary items related to this that have been slightly overlooked as well.
We also talk about the most wonderful night of the year (if you are a watch nerd in the greater Cincinnati area) Whiskey&Watches at Richter & Phillips. Catching up with old friends, seeing new watch models, speaking with brand reps, and enjoying a cocktail or two. This is one of our favorite events each year, and Spence and Buzz regale Spangler with our highlights from the night. This event holds a special place in our hearts (and our podcast history) as it is where Spence and Buzz met Spangler in 2018. The result of that meeting, you all have stayed tuned to for 140 episodes!
This week's episode is a long time coming. Spence, Spangler, and Buzz have the opportunity to chat with Mike Pearson from Zodiac watches. We talk about the brand's direction, the heritage of the Zodiac name, and some hints at what is to come.
It is refreshing to hear the overall direction for Zodiac, under the stewardship of the Fossil Group, from Mike. Stewardship is the correct term for the relationship. Zodiac is a brand with 140 years of history, a history that is being showcased by the new ownership. Some of the stories that Mike relates to us speak volumes to the direction the brand is heading, and we are very excited to see what comes next!
Cheers!
This week's episode is a bit late. Thanksgiving travel has a way of setting priorities. However, enjoy this episode with Spence and Buzz talking about some black Friday weekend specials to keep an eye out for, as well as what we are Thankful for as we continue to be amazed at your support!
This week's episode feels like a long time coming. Spence and Spangler sit down with Everett and Christian from Foster Watch Company to talk about the 11 Atmos. The guys touch on the design process, Christian's point of view as more of a "normie" and how the entire project came together.
We reference Montgomery Ward, Foster Road, podcasting, Jazz, you name it. This was the perfect way for 40&20 and Whiskey&Watches to bond over what looks to be a killer release. Even Joey Harrington agrees!
This episode explores complications. Not from an educational perspective, mind you, but from the perspective of what we would like in a complication. Whether it is combining existing complications, making up for user ineptness, or alerting to geographically specific astronomical phenomena. This was a fun topic, with only a few side bars. Enjoy!
On this week's episode we have some thoughts on deep watches. We are talking the new Rolex SeaDweller Deepsea Challenge, the Omega Deep Tech, and the Omega Ploprof. We pick a two watch pairing to go with each of the denizens of the deep.
Enjoy!
Yes, we hinted at it, but Spence's Grandpa is a big fan of the show Frasier! So are Buzz and Spence, and I would guess many of our listeners. We riff on what watches are fitting for the main characters, as well as some characters from off the beaten path. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
This is a walk down memory lane. We have talked in the past about the watch that started us down the enthusiast (or collecting) rabbit hole. However, if you look back a little further, there is most likely a watch in your pre-collecting days that would fit right in with your current collection. How did we get there, and what watch was it? What stories are behind that particular piece?
The funniest part of this is, we don't consider these watches part of our "collection" as it were, but they will NEVER leave. Take a listen, and we hope you enjoy!
In this week's episode, Spence and Buzz debate if there is still creativity in the watch space. Are we resigned to press releases and boring launch events? Are vintage re-issues sapping the creative juices of designers and watchmakers? These are topics we discuss, and more. We hope you enjoy!
Spence is back and we are talking Value Propositions. The guys debate, do value propositions still exist? Are they what they once were? What items at what price points make sense? Have watches jumped the shark?
The final conclusion might just surprise you.
Spence is out this week which means that its a 100% Buzz and Spangler episode. And we figured that since it's that time of year where the leaves start to turn yellow and pumpkin spice is all consuming, that we should talk about seasonality when it comes to watches. We start off the episode though with our thoughts on aftermarket straps, bands and bracelets because, well...why not!
Spence and Spangler catch up on watch nonsense. We have Fresh Forum Finds! We get Spangler's long overdue opinions. We chat collection status, consolidation, contentment, AND Spence might have figured out what is going on at Hodinkee....
Enjoy!
On this week's episode, Spence and Buzzy are joined by friend of the show Bryant to talk all things Tudor. From the newly released Pelagos 39, to the Black Bay Pro, and the Ranger, we hit all of the new drops from 2022. Enjoy!
Buzzy is back this week. We both have new watch additions! Some predictions that are at this point dated, enjoy!
On this week's episode, Spence and Spangler welcome back VJ Geronimo from Oris!
We chat about the new releases that just dropped. The Diver 65 with 12 hour bezel and caliber 400 is sure to be a hit. VJ revealed some interesting details about this watch, and movement production, that I am sure you all will find very interesting.
Also, the new Aquis mother of pearl dials are reminiscent of the New York Harbor limited edition and are excellent additions to the collection.
We also talk with VJ about the concept of sustainability, what it means to Oris, and how they are working towards a more carbon neutral future. Additionally, we touch on their recently released sustainability report, and how they partner with organizations such as the Billion Oyster Project, The Coral Restoration Foundation, and Wings of Hope.
This is another fantastic episode, and it is always fun to see what Oris has in store for us next!
This week, friend of the show @motorjon68 joins Spence to talk about where we sit within our watch collecting mindset. Lately, there has been less and less that creates the got to have it urge. While this isn't a bad thing, it does change the mindset that we had earlier on in our collecting days of constantly chasing new releases.
This conversation allows us to be reflective, and think about where we see our collections. We also talk about any connotation that comes with being seen as a "X-watch guy." As weird as that sounds, it is definitely a thing.
Sit back, relax, enjoy, and ponder.
This week's episode is a real treat. Spence, Spangler, and Buzz sit down with Dane from Bourbon Watch Company to talk about his upcoming release, the Rue Canal. The design of the watch is inspired by New Orleans landmarks, and angles a bit dressy. However, depending on the dial color, it has quite a bit of range. Spangler has been able to go hands on, and is quite impressed with the fit. We are especially a fan of the 9mm thickness, an impressive feat in this space.
The story of the watch goes back to Dane's proud heritage in Southern Louisiana. Dane's family were some of the earliest settlers, dating back to 1721. Impressive, considering Louisiana was settled only three years prior. The passion for his home, and his passion for watches fueled this project. This passion definitely comes through in this interview.
Enjoy!
In this week's episode, we play on the topic that our buddies over at Wristcheese Radio just dropped. We are going Mount Rushmore, but with a twist. Not going to give this one away, you'll just have to listen for yourself!
This week's episode is a new flavor for all of us. For the first time in 122 episodes, Spence, Spangler, and Buzz are recording in person JUST THE THREE OF US! This is sort of a collection inspection, banter type episode. I have to say, this was one of our most fun to record. As much as we enjoy hanging out virtually, recording in person was an absolute blast. We got to see watches that we have picked up that others havent seen in person, we go down a few rabbit holes, we have laughs, beers, etc. This was a ton of fun to make, and I hope that all of you have folks you enjoy hanging out with as much as we enjoyed seeing each other!
This week's episode is a fun three part-er! In the introduction, Buzzy and Spence talk about Wind Up, do a normal drink check/wrist check, and get through some FFF.
In the second part, Spence and Zach from Cincy Strap Co. come to you live from the road to talk about what we hope to see at Wind Up Chicago!
In part three, Spence and Zach come to you again from the car studio on our return trip from Wind Up Chicago. We reflect on what we saw, who it was good to see in person, what Spence's sister thought of the watch nerds, and how much fun it was!
We hope you enjoy!
This episode is a two parter. In the first half of the episode, Spence and Buzz exchange the usual pleasantries, discuss some FFF, and talk a bit about Norqain.
The second part of the episode features Spence's conversation with Katlen Schmidt of Tenn and Two. We talk watches, podcasting, her new gig at Norqain, and what podcasts she has been listening to lately (this takes a turn, but stick with it!)
Katlen was gracious enough to sit down with Spence after hosting a get together with Norqain and Redbar Cincy. A lot of fun was had by all!
This episode concludes the Watch TriPod Alliance's jaunt through the decades. We get through some more recent honorable mentions, but then dive right into our main topic in chronological order.
Spangler, ever the wild card is up first with three selections from the 1940s. He reaches back the furthest out of anyone.
Spence takes a decade near and dear to his heart, the 1980s. While we joke about the design of the era, the conclusion is that maybe these watches (and cars) look better than we think.
Buzz does the only repeat of the entire series, selecting the 2000s. However, given that his taste is significantly different from Gregg's, we think it is just fine to hit this era of design again.
Enjoy!
On this week's episode we are short a Spangler. You hate to see it but had to know that it was going to happen. Spence and Buzz talk the new Oris releases, a new bracelet from Forstner, and some summer reading materials.
We also have some fresh forum finds and an excellent beer review for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy!
On this episode we keep it short (relatively) and sweet. We talk about Spangler's new MoonSwatch, the effect it has had on the watch universe, and the WRONG way to collect watches. Hint, it's not necessarily what you might think. Enjoy!
In this episode Spence and Spangler talk summer activities, cookouts, and a little bit of summer watches.
We get less into specifics about the watches, but talk more about another summer staple: the cookout. What to bring (sides, beverages, seating) what to wear (shirts, shorts, watches) and how to host! This one was a lot of fun shooting the summer breeze, we hope you enjoy
This one is a fun conversation. It takes place at the end of the episode after FFF and the usual pleasantries. Are we over Rolex hype? Are we over Rolex itself? How has Omega shifted their focus? What does it mean to be a collector/enthusiast? No idea, it is still fun, but not in the same way as it used to be. We muse on this for a bit and it is a fun conversation. We hope you enjoy!
This week's episode is a bit of a grab bag as it were. We talk watch spotting at the neighborhood cookout, expensive straps on cheap watches, being bitten by the gold bug, and how green a bronze bracelet will make your wrist. There is also a series (yes, series) of FreshForumFinds!
Enjoy!
Episode 113 has everything: Lange One, Doxa, the new Oris PPX caliber 400, whisky, whiskey, vermouth, dogs, Jurassic Park action figures, We're Back references. The only thing this episode doesn't have is Spud Webb.
In all seriousness, Spence, SPANGLER!, and Buzz had the opportunity to chat with Analog Shift founder James Lamdin to talk watches. Our buddy Cory from Method Vermouth provided the introduction, and this episode does not disappoint. One of the pre-eminent watch nerds, James is well versed in everything from Lange to, of course, Doxa. We chat about the new ceramic Doxa Army, the recent opening of the Cincinnati Watches of Switzerland location (which includes Analog Shift) and the exciting journey that James is continuing on. It is funny how this hobby has brought us together with some excellent people, and James is no exception to this. We go down several rabbit holes, but knowing our listeners (all 16! of you) this one is going to great. Enjoy!
Episode 112 is an interesting topic. We tackle an interesting take on a "grail" watch. There is one catch, you have to sell off the rest of the collection (with some caveats). Spence and Buzz talk about the watch, or watches, they have considered blowing the collection up and buying to be a one watch person.
We also have some Fresh Forum Finds for you, always fun.
Don't forget, episode 112 is brought to you by MANSCAPED! Use promo code "BUZZCUT" for 20% off and FREE SHIPPING!
This episode starts off less serious than others as we have a few laughs. In all seriousness though, we do have FIVE, yes FIVE, Fresh Forum Finds in this episode. After quite some time off this segment comes roaring back.
Also, Buzzy has recently acquired a Forstner Jubilee bracelet for his BB58. We talk about that new acquisition, aftermarket bracelets in general, and what watches they make sense for. Enjoy!
This week's episode was teased by our buddies at Spirit of Time podcast. We are exploring the $10k three watch collection. As Spangler was sadly working on his next assignment trip we were honored to have our buddy @ryanwearswatches join us for this episode (which is still brought to you by Manscaped! Use promo code "BUZZCUT" for 20% off and free shipping while you can!).
As you can tell, this conversation was a lot of fun, and I think offers three excellent versions of a three watch collection. Enjoy!
On this week's episode we are pleased to welcome back Mike Stockton from Fratello Watches! Mike is our most frequent guest, usurping our meme extraordinaire buddy Brodinkee! On this week's episode (once again brought to you by Manscaped, use promo code "Buzzcut" for 20% off and FREE SHIPPING) we talk about the Moonswatch as Mike was lucky enough to acquire one, Breitling's new Navitimer (a fantastic release), and a few sleeper watches that came out around Watches&Wonders that might have slipped under the radar. It is always a pleasure to catch up with Mike, and we can't wait to have him back again soon!
This week the triumvirate is back with Spence, SPANGLER, and Buzz together once again. We talk about Spangler's take on Watces&Wonders since he missed last week's episode, and the Fresh Forum Find returns!
However, the big news this week is that Spangler is on assignment in Dallas! (Mainly for veterinary school) BUT! Dallas has a Swatch boutique! We talk about the Moonswatch, how many were in the DFW boutique, the fact that these are actually really well done in person, and which colors Spangler prefers, and whether or not Swatch is part of the Richemont Group...Enjoy!
All of the alliteration this week as Spence and Buzz take a gander at all of the latest releases from the past week's Watches&Wonders show. There were definitely some hits, some notable misses, and some curiosities that we are glad to see exist, but are likely unobtanium.
This week's episode is once again brought to you by our friends at Manscaped! We are really enjoying the Performance Package 4.0, and you can get 20% off AND free shipping with the promo code "buzzcut". Be sure to check them out!
We have a lot to talk about in this episode as it has been a while since we last talked about WATCHES, but here we go.
We start out with the usual pleasantries, and Spence has a new watch addition to talk about. He recently made his decision on what watch to pass down to his third little boy, and the Oris Aquis caliber 400 41.5 is the one.
Speaking of new things, this week's episode of the Whiskey&Watches podcast is brought to you by our friends at Manscaped! Use promo code "BUZZCUT" to get 20% off and free shipping!
We also talk about some stunning new releases, starting with what Omega has come out with. The Ultra Deep, Aqua Terra, and some stunning new Speedmasters in Moonshine gold.
After a few other brief talking points we hit the big one. ORIS HAS DONE A BABY PPX AND IT IS AMAZING! We are so excited for this launch. We were able to go hands on with a press model prior to the launch, and what is there to say that we don't cover on this episode.
If you want to hear about our request for this watch (which, sure probably has nothing to do with the development, but still!) go back to our first episode with VJ Geronimo from Oris! This is one we are super duper excited about, and I am sure you will want to go see in the flesh!
Enjoy!
This one is another field trip for the podcast as Spence is joined by fellow podcaster Matt from the Spirit of Time Podcast and former guests Michael Pandolfo and Josh Shanks to not talk about watches!
The guys do mention what is on their wrist during the standard wrist check/drink check, but this episode is all about Formula 1 and racing in general. The four of us have a shared interest in watching high tech automobiles drive in circles (some with many turns) at high speeds. We thought it was fitting as the season was just about to kick off and we were all excited to see the new rule changes put into effect. If you are a racing fan, a fan of Drive to Survive on Netflix, or just like hearing passionate people talk about a topic they are interested in, this one is for you!
This week's episode is an education for Spence and Buzz as we chat with Method Spirits founder Cory Fitzsimmons to talk vermouth. This spirit is a key ingredient to many cocktails we all love, from Spence's beloved Manhattan, to Buzz's Boulevardier, to the WIS-centric Negroni. A key to a great beverage is quality ingredients, and having tried Method prior to recording, we can easily say it is up to the standard.
Cory walks us through his experience in bar tending and hospitality (by way of ND's school of architecture, so please excuse the trip down memory lane for these three Domers) and how his goal is to create a local product that still hits all of the right flavor notes for your favorite classic cocktail. The process is interesting, and the end result is one we would recommend trying for yourself!
Chances are, if you've read about watches, watch collecting, or watch collectors in the New York Times, you've read an article written by our guest this week. Spence had the privilege of meeting Alexandra on his trip to Vail with Oris. Working as a travel/culture/luxury writer, Alexandra is easily our most well traveled guest, and she was happy to share some of her stories from writing about this space with us. Alexandra calls California home, and is a former professional surfer, but her job has taken her to more countries than I can remember as I am writing these show notes, driving faster cars than many of us have had the opportunity to (one of which had her driving one James Stacey around Germany). She will be attending her first Watches&Wonders event later this month, an experience I am looking forward to reading about upon her return!
On this week's episode of the show, we welcome our friend Mike Stockton from Fratello Watches! We discuss some of the latest releases, football (as he was stateside) and what we might expect as we head into the upcoming watch fairs.
Enjoy!
In this episode, we hear what Spence was able to record on his trip to Vail with Oris!
There is a candid conversation with Oris CEO Rolf Studer, talking about brand heritage, new releases, and what some of his favorite Oris models of past and present are.
Next, we sit down with our first listener @motorjon68 to talk about the new releases we have seen so far this year from Oris. We also touch on what Rolf hinted at with what we think might be coming later this year.
Lastly, Spence had a chance to sit down (really step outside the bar, and get interrupted by a delivery driver, so apologies for some background noise) with Ablogtowatch's Ariel Adams. We discussed the state of collecting, designing a collaboration watch, and what excites him in this space today.
Enjoy!
We did it! Something none of us had ever imagined might actually happen has happened. To celebrate, we had to have our close friend and first listener, @motorjon68 on the show to talk watches, do #FreshForumFinds, and have a great time!
Thank you for sticking with us for 100, here's to the next 100!
We have nearly made it to 100 episodes and 2 years! This one is a fitting 99th episode as prodigal host Spangler has returned, and with a BIG NWA. We talk through how his collection has evolved and what is now filling this Space!
Spence and Buzz gather once again without Spangler (who does factor into this episode) to talk about Buzz's new watch addition! There are also several Fresh Forum Finds that hit close to home, some discussion of insanley priced Omega's, and some very nicely sized Orii.
We also talk about the directions our collective collections might head in the next year, and we preview some exciting things to come.
What a year 2021 has been. In this first episode of 2022, Spence and Buzz walk down memory lane to revisit some of the fun conversations we have had with new friends over the past 12 months. What a year it has been, but here's to making 2022 even better!
In this episode we discuss how the holiday season is ripe for potential for "stepping in it" as it were with your non-wis significant other. From projecting our interests onto them, to wanting to spark a desire that might not be there, we talk about why it might be best to REALLY think hard about a watch for someone this time of year.
This week, the guys are back together to talk about new watches! Some were unexpected models that were discontinued last year, others are fun takes on a more traditional style.
We hit the usual bits with a Fresh Forum Find, but also give you some College Football Chat given how intertwined the schools we all support/attend are at the moment. Please excuse our digression.
We are thankful to have all three of the amigos back to host the episode on the week of Thanksgiving. We touch on a few items in the watch world we are thankful for and keep it pretty brief. We are thankful we each have a Fresh Forum Find, thankful for each of our 14 listeners, and hoping that everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
Cheers!
Our friend from north of the border returns! Spence and Buzz sit down with RJ to talk about a lot of things going on this month.
First, RJ was able to attend the GS9 symposium in New York. He fills us in on the event, including on the panel he participated in. Grand Seiko pulled out all the stops on this one, and from the conversation we had with RJ, it is definitely something to check out in the future (when you aren't welcoming new family additions). The human connection is definitely there among the GS collector base, and RJ said the best part was getting to meet all of the people he has interacted virtually with during lockdown in person.
RJ also recently worked with Macallan in eastern Canada to host a tasting as a fundraiser for Movember. RJ walked us through the tasting notes he could remember, but mainly recounted an excellent time and a good dollar amount raised for the cause.
Which brings us to the last topic of discussion. RJ is a firm supporter of the Movember movement as he sees the need for it everyday in his job as a physician. Working to raise awareness for men's health (not just testicular and prostate cancer, but mental health and overall wellbeing) is a cause that is worthy of focus. As we talked about last year, men are sometimes not encouraged to ask for help or show signs of weakness. It is important to make sure that we all take care of each other, and encourage the care and focus on these items that is something we all benefit from.
Spence and Buzzy are super excited for this one. We had the opportunity to catch up with Josh Shanks (fellow Hoosier, for those keeping track of where Spence is from) of Watchonista!
It is not everyday you meet someone who has followed their passion to the degree that Josh has. We talk about the passion project that was being the first US based employee for Watchonista, and getting the operation set up on the ground, to being vetted by the RedBar folks to go to his first meet-up, to eventually meeting his wife at SIHH. Josh has taken an amazing journey, and we were so glad he was happy to share it with us.
Don't worry, we also talk plenty of watches! Josh walks us through his original purchase as a kid (at a flea market) and then walks us through how the addiction (his term not ours, but applicable) spiraled from there. He has had some amazing experiences in his time at Watchonista, including one very recently which we won't give away here.
It was a pleasure getting to know Josh more, and here's looking to another episode, because I think we only scratched the surface!
Recording on the day after Halloween, we decided to take on an interesting topic. What watches are the unwanted pieces of candy that should get more love. Is there a watch equivalent of the Mr. Goodbar, an excellent chocolate and peanut candy bar that is often passed over for the more popular Snickers, Reese's Peanut Butter cup (or even better the pumpkins!), or Butterfingers.
This week is even more fun because not only do we have @brodinkee back, we are also joined by two friends from the Carolina Watch Club @ryanwearswatches and @bearded_southern_gentlemen. This episode was a ton of fun to record, I am sure you'll enjoy listening!
I am not going to give anything away here. I am looking forward to listening to this one too!
Spence and Buzz catch up with Wes and for the first time Cullen from Nodus Watches. These two have had a busy year, with several product re-launches. Their plans for the end of the year and 2022 are even bigger. We talk about the various models in the Sector family that will continue to drop later this year, their upcoming Avalon II with a NEW CLASP, and what they might consider releasing in 2022.
We also talk about the state of the watch industry, how microbrands were uniquely poised to weather the pandemic from a customer engagement perspective, and what we are seeing as the path forward for brands of all sizes. It is an exciting time to be an enthusiast because brands like Nodus are innovating and designing killer products that compete with "the big brands."
It is always a great time catching up with guys from Nodus, we hope you enjoy!
In this week's episode, the guys talk loosely about the watches of James Bond, what an ideal watch for the superspy would be, and how long it has been since the No Time To Die Omega debuted compared to the movie it stars in.
This is a fun topic that we haven't covered yet, mainly because the watch came out before we started this podcast, and the movie didn't come out until this week!
This episode is a bit self explanatory and a bit like last week's episode with one major difference: It is our 1 year Anniversary of Brodinkee's podcast debut!
To celebrate we decided to riff off one of our favorite Family Guy episodes and do a little segment about what has been grinding our gears as of late. It ranges from odd lug widths, less than stellar lume, to watch collecting as a lifestyle instead of a hobby. Sit back, relax and let us know, what has been grinding your gears lately!
On this week's episode, Spence and Buzz reflect on opinions that have evolved or changed since we have been in the watch collecting hobby. Tastes change, opinions change, and people change. Watch collecting, for the two of us anyway, is no different. Whether it is a comment made on a group chat, opinions on watches in our collections that we never thought would be there, or at least wouldnt be there yet, or a woulda coulda shoulda.
Sit back and relax as Spence and Buzz go through a fun walk down memory lane.
In this episode, the gang is all back (as you can probably tell from the intro music!) and we discuss a few things. First, we get back to our usual tropes with wrist/drink check and fresh forum finds. We also review some of the listener suggestions for Spence's newest addition (we made it to 10 listeners!).
The topic du jour, however, is picking one watch LINE to wear exclusively from. There is a good discussion, some technicalities, and a good debate, but we do think there is a correct answer and a few other good but less-correct answers. Hope all of you enjoy!
This episode is a bit of a misnomer, but it fits the discussion Spence and Buzz have. Spence and his wife are expecting a third little boy at the end of October. As many know, he has a watch for each of his two sons (stainless steel, released in the year of their birth). So this draft episode (which coincides with a fantasy football draft) is to help Spence analyze his next pick. Buzz does an excellent job making a case for Spangler's pick, but then also does his best Mel Kiper to tear it apart!
This is an episode where the audience can also participate! Let us know what you think of the picks, or if there is anything we might've overlooked!
This week Spence sits down with friend of the podcast and longtime listener @ryanwearswatches to talk watch collecting, the strange ways this hobby has turned since he got into it, and just general nonsense. He might be the only member of both the Carolina Watch Club and the Boston Watch Shots. He is a traveling man who also is celebrating a new watch addition. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this lengthy episode!
In this weeks episode, Spence and Buzz catch up after Buzz's absence last week. We chat about what watch he identifies most with (hint, its not in his collection, and it might not even be one watch...). We also have the usual pleasantries, a few off the wall Fresh Forum Finds, and a bit of a Spence Soliloquy at the end.
In this episode it is just the OGs, Spence and Spangler. We exchange our usual pleasantries, including a fresh forum find, and then get a bit more personal. We each discuss which what (either in our collection, or decidedly not in one case) we identify with. A watch to personify each of us. Now, we took two different paths, Spangler looking at all aspects of his life to find the perfect watch for him (huge shocker that I won't spoil) and Spence looked at lifestyle, but also what defines his collecting style. This was a fun conversation that allowed us to get a bit more introspective, peel back the onion as it were. Sit back relax, do some thinking of your own, and enjoy the show!
In this week's episode, friend of the show, and Fratello contributor, Mike Stockton returns! Each of us, including our guest, brings in a FreshForumFind with so many asides you might think it is an hour long episode of Family Guy...
We do finally get into our main topic, our favorite (or best) odd ball case materials. There are fun discussions on various types of metals, materials, and maybe even a food product. Such a fun discussion and always a good time when we catch up with Mike!
In this week's episode, Spence and Buzz (both dads) discuss watches for dads. There is a trend you will see developing as we tackle several different price points. We also briefly touch on what we think is a low key ultimate mom watch (based on some personal experience). We also hit a Fresh Forum Find as well.
In this week's episode Spence and Spangler have new watch alerts! We all have Fresh Forum Finds, and we discuss what our preferences are for summer straps. There are definitely some shenanigans, possibly some hijinks, and definitely excellent banter.
On this week's episode the gang sits down with Bryant, aka the bearded southern gentleman on instagram. Bryant is a collector and member of the Carolina Watch Club and host of Triple T. The group talks about Bryant's collection, how he got started in watches, and about his affiliation with the Carolina Watch Club.
In this episode Spence and Buzz talk New Hats!
We also bring Fresh Forum Finds and talk about the idea of milestone watches, how they fit into collections, and what Spence might be looking at next.
On this week's episode Spence, Spangler and Buzz sit down with Hodinkee's own Cole Pennington. The gang chats with Cole about his start in journalism and then his, albeit in his own words unexpected, move into his role at Hodinkee. They also talk about watch shows, wrist sizes and of course a bit about cars. This is a great episode so get ready and sit back, because it's time for another episode of the Whiskey and Watches Podcast!
This week's episode features all three hosts! Spence and Buzz are joined by Spangler (who edited this episode) to talk Tudor, Oris, Breitling, and Zenith! A good amount of new watches came out in the last week, and we are here to offer opinions, as well as talk about the new PBR truckload of beer, some consumption math, and other things.
Enjoy!
This was a bit of a slow news week in the world of watches with a few releases for Spence and Buzz to cover. Spangler is out traveling the west coast, so the time change proved to be too difficult. We touch on multiple Seikos, Omega, IWC, and Seiko again.
Fresh Forum Finds make a return, and these are about off the wall this week.
Enjoy!
This week Spence and Buzz sit down with Oris North American CEO (and returning guest) VJ Geronimo to discuss a new release, what has already dropped this year, and what we can expect from Oris throughout the rest of the year including some in person meets!
Well, we threw up the Bro signal and look who was able to join us! Our friend @brodinkee was able to sit down with us last minute to go over some new releases from Oris, Zenith, Tudor and a few others. We get into the Holstein Edition, Zenith Revival Safari, and of course the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic. We also wonder when, if ever, Tudor is going to release their MN branded watch, what it could be, and what is taking them so long. This was another fun conversation and always a good time catching up with @brodinkee.
On this week's episode, Spangler, Spence, and Buzz are joined by John (master distiller at Old Pogue), Chanslor, and Mike to talk mainly whiskey, and a little bit of watches. There are some surprising parallels between the two worlds as we have learned.
John has a very interesting story regarding the family distillery, how he goes about making his 200 barrels per year, and the overall whiskey industry.
Additionally, we do some live tasting of three of the products from Old Pogue, we hope you all enjoy this one as much as we enjoyed making it!
Some of you might be excited for whatever Tudor is releasing today, but we are talking vacation watches again! In this continuation from the discussion in last week's episode Spence, Spangler, and Buzz talk about what one watch they would take with them on vacation. Since we all agreed to bring just ONE watch on vacation, we need to talk about which watch that is. No rules, no budget, just the ultimate watch to take on a vacation.
There is some significant discussion here, but the answers from each of us might surprise you. Also, we know we are going to catch some heat for our last little Rolex Rant, but bear with us, i think you all might agree it makes sense!
Summer is nearing, restrictions for the vaccinated are being lifted, and the guys are talking vacation watches!
In these next two episodes we tackle the question many of us face around this time of year, how many watches should you bring on vacation, and if you could only take one watch, what one is it?
These episodes are full of hot takes (sort of) and are a lot of fun. They definitely have us thinking of warmer weather and exotic destinations!
This week, despite an unexpected week off, we are back and Spangler is filling in for Spangler! That is all you really need to know about this episode. We get back to our usual nonsense, and Spangler even throws some additional nonsense our way that had Spence and Buzz really going for a second.
We teased this one a b it, but it is finally here! Spence and Buzz sit down with @lange.on.a.nato to talk about sowing seeds of chaos in the watch collecting community!
In reality, this is very similar to other collector conversations, we talk about his inspiration for the account, how he caught the watch collecting bug, what pieces have come and gone, and what he really thinks about Nato style straps! You definitely won't want to miss this one!
This week Buzz and Spence sit down with @watchgirloffduty aka Zoe Abelson! Zoe has a unique perspective on collecting from inside the watch industry. Zoe has worked for names we all know and recognize in her tenure in the industry such as Antiquorum, Crown&Caliber, and WatchBox to name a few.
Zoe has been in Hong Kong for the last three years. She discusses the difference between the Hong Kong market and the US market, what brands are popular in Asia vs. the US, and other trends that are emerging in this very wealthy market.
Of course, it would not be a collector conversation if we didn't discuss Zoe's personal collection. She is the first person to wrist check a Patek Philippe on our podcast, as well as the first guest who currently resides in Asia! We also discuss the Rolex Oyster Perpetual(s) that are in her collection, the story behind how she obtained them, as well as her obsession with the JLC Reverso.
Zoe has some excellent stories, is a genuinely fun person to chat with, and has a special Mixed Tap dropping soon you won't want to miss!
We cover some of the new Omega releases and then have some banter about this upcoming alliterative watch fair that may already be happening. Enjoy!
We are very excited for this episode that has been in the works for a little bit now, Spence and Spangler sit down with Sam (@samandherwatchbox, Stateside Sam from @timeoftheweek and Scottish Watches Live). We have been wanting to chat with Sam to get her unique perspective in this hobby, not only the female point of view, but how she got into collecting at such a young age. We walk through Sam's watch journey, what pieces she has acquired along the way, and get a little bit into what she has her eye on for the future from a collecting and overall life perspective as she approaches college graduation.
Collecting watches on a college student budget can be challenging, however, anyone who follows her on instagram knows she has some pretty awesome pieces in her collection already. We talk about her penchant for bright dialed watches with red, blue, and yellow (or divingstar for the Doxa heads) already in the collection. Blue dials have been her thing since before it was cool, and the Tudor Black Bay in her collection holds special meaning and gets the most wrist time. We also talk about how difficult it can be to choose your watch each morning (especially if you think those watches have feelings...) and how a white silicone strap can go with pretty much any watch.
We also talked about her future plans as a theater major. She has already been going to auditions prior to graduation, and you won't have to learn a new name to find her in any of your favorite TV shows or movies. Her strong personality and sense of self is an attribute that comes through in an instant. We had a great time getting to know this rising star!
In this episode Spence and Buzz sit down with a friend from our Cincy Redbar group @Sohl to discuss the intersection of his two hobbies, Diving and Watches. Sohl is the first (that we know of) registered diver to come on the podcast, and his journey into watches and diving happened concurrently, but not in the way you might think. We discuss what came first, the diving or the watches, some of the pieces in his collection, his interaction with the Bund King himself, Jason Heaton, and a few other pertinent topics.
We end the episode discussing the recent Doxa Dust-Up and get Sohl's take on the Synchron Military (he owns one), Doxa's reaction, and what we might expect from both of these brands in the near future. It was a pleasure having our friend on the show, and I am sure, once Doxa releases a response, he will be glad to share his opinion with us on air again!
Oh, and here is a link to the Hodinkee article we talk about!
This week the guys get together to talk some of the new watch releases. We cover all of the new integrated bracelet sport watches from Tissot and Citizen. We also get back to basics with a Fresh Forum Find.
That is just the icing on the cake, as the real discussion centers around Synchron, Rick Marei, Doxa, and the Synchron military. I am sure we butchered some of the history, but a discussion of the newly released dive watch and the reaction from Doxa have had a segment of the watchfam heated for the last week or so. Sit back and enjoy our ill-informed take on it!
This week's episode is quite special. We made the resolution to feature more Whiskey (or Whisky) on the podcast, and this episode really delivers!
After recording in November with RJ, he brought up the idea of recording an episode with our new friend Sandy, the master blender at Chivas/Glenlivet/Ballantines/etc. to really get into the development of a scotch blend, what goes into the process, etc. After finally coordinating our calendars (or diaries) we were able to make it happen!
This episode features the Glenlivet 12 year, and Sandy walks us through how his job as master blender really touches all points of the process to get that excellent beverage from the still to the bottle. Sandy takes us behind the scenes as we talk about whisky recipes, the industry in general, and how it all comes together. We get into the cask selection, what drives new product creation, and how these items are passed from generation to generation.
If that sounds a lot like wrist watches, you would be correct. Sandy is a huge fan of Grand Seiko (no surprise) and appreciates the craft that goes into fine watch making. We talk about where the love for watches started (at a very young age) and how it has progressed over the years. This episode is full of great discussion, new friendship, and plenty of jokes, we are sure you will enjoy this as much as we did!
It seemed like there were more releases than we could count, but we tried. In this week's episode Spence, Spangler, and Buzz go over releases we havent covered from Oris, Tag Heuer, IWC, and of course Seiko and Grand Seiko.
We probably missed a few, but our guess is you all visit the usual spots to read up on those. We covered a lot of ground, and forgive us for not doing a Fresh Forum Find because it was always going to be a LONG episode. Enjoy!
This is a big episode because SPANGLER IS BACK! A brief 3 week hiatus sees Spangler return with a new watch for each episode he missed! Spence and Buzz also have made some new acquisitions recently. This is a fun episode where we get to talk about these new acquisitions, fresh forum finds, AND some other new releases.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
This is our first ever crossover episode and we couldnt be more excited. Spence and Buzz were thrilled to join Anthony and Vinnie from Fifth Wrist Radio!
These guys have been doing a series of shows for a little bit longer than we have, and it was fun to collaborate with like minded folks. They also were our first guests to come to us FROM THE FUTURE! The time change made for a lot of fun. We get into some of the usual bits from our show, as well as some from theirs as well. The discussion of podcast insights and memorable moments was fun given that we were able to pull on a year's worth of episodes.
We do eventually get into our main topic that seems to be a big discussion amongst the #watchfam lately: Is any watch REALLY New? Most people compare each new release to something that came before it (especially something from Rolex or designed by Gerald Genta). We each offer our opinions of why we think more choice is better (typically) and then tackle another fun topic.
This episode was a great chat, as you can tell by the length, and we were glad to make some new friends from Australia! Give them a listen, if you enjoy what we have going on, Fifth Wrist Radio should be right up your alley!
We each go through our watch predictions for the rest of 2021, with a Lead Pipe Lock, Safe Play, Even Money, and Long Shot bet! We go through the parlance in the episode, so dont worry if you are not a gambler (we actually had Bro explain most of it to us prior to recording...). We then assign each bet a WIS (WIS Intolerance Score) to each of our predictions.
Unfortunately, no sports book has actually been willing to take any action on these bets, so for now we just have to wait to see how we did!
In this Collector Conversation we sit down with friend of the podcast @case_and_crown, the Microbrand Queen, long may she reign!
All joking aside, we have a fantastic conversation with Debby. She has a unique origin story when it comes to watch collecting. She has an affinity for the microbrands, owning more than most, if not all of the collectors that we know personally. She has recently "discovered" other brands as well, having added both Oris and that brand with a 5 pointed crown...
Her story about one of her acquisitions had Spence and Buzz in stitches, and it was most definitely the first time a certain phrase has been uttered on the podcast.
Debby is also a part of the New England watch club the "Boston Watch Shots" who are her friends and enablers. They are always there to offer discussion on new pieces, and she said they are a great sounding board. We also do a bit of detective work on one of their members who's identity might be revealed in the days to come, so stay tuned.
We had an excellent time chatting with Debby, and are sure you will enjoy this conversation.
We did it! One year is in the books! We honestly cannot believe that this podcast has made it this far. There have been excellent interviews, banter, tropes, alliteration, new friends, and plenty more over the past year. We wouldnt have made it this far without you! Our listeners (regardless of the actual number).
This episode is quite a bit of fun, between some "well wishes" from listeners and past guests, to a neat drinking game that may have been coined on a previous episode. We bring the heat with some #FreshForumFinds, we talk about some new releases, and some watches that you can't get anymore (not that you could really before). Sit back, relax, and enjoy this one year anniversary special!
This episode was a long time coming. Our friend @gelatomancer (Noah) who has been a regular contributor to our site (www.zeitzwatches.com) is FINALLY a guest on the podcast. We get into the usual Collector Conversation discussion such as his origin story with watches, how he ended up tool watch focused, and how his collection has evolved. Noah started with microbrand watches and has since ventured into German watchmaking, which is very appropriate given our location in the very German (based on settling) Cincinnati, OH. We do get into a bit of a history/geography lesson on the city, which ties into Noah's first watch. We hope you enjoy this episode.
In this episode the guys talk new Speedy! We give several Omega Opinions on the look of the new Speedmaster, the different versions, as well as another fund Omega rabbit hole we have been exploring lately.
We also stick to our New Year's Resolution and come up with three exciting Fresh (fast) Forum Finds!
There is additional peer pressure to help Spangler keep up with one of his resolutions, as some have already fallen by the wayside.
Buzz is also on could nine after the Browns victory earlier in the week, and he has the best idea we have come up with so far!
This week's episode is just Spence, Spangler, and Buzz for the first time in several weeks. We talk about some of the happenings in the past few episodes, some updates to the site, how we are keeping up with our resolutions and more!
We start with the usual, wrist/drink check, then get into any watch adjacent items we received for the holidays. We then check in to see if we are keeping up with our resolutions (I guess Buzz gets a pass on that) and do another Fresh Forum Find!
We then (presciently) talk about the new Speedmaster, what we hope it looks like, and whether or not it is on one of our lists.
Lastly, we revive the Defunct Design trope and talk about two of our favorite now discontinued Rolex models.
Enjoy!
He's Back! You knew that for the last episode of 2020 we were going to have some fun! We brought back our buddy @brodinkee for some New Year's Resolutions (watch style). This episode is a ton of fun, from resolving to listen to Spangler more (about Whiskey) to wearing what you want, to collecting with a purpose. We pause for some reflection about the hobby, where we are as collectors, and where the podcast is going.
We also have a Fresh Forum Find for you all, because we are resolving to do that more frequently in the new year! This one is a lot of fun, as it always is when we hang out with Bro. We hope you all enjoy!
This week's episode (sorry, a day late again, I know) features Jon Weber from Par Weber watches. If you aren't aware, Jon is doing something pretty neat in the micro brand watch space. He has created his own proprietary luminance system called Enduro-Lume, which is patent pending! He has deployed this technology in a watch that Buzz and Spence have been lucky enough to try out for a good chunk of time, the Coefficient.
Jon's is a watch guy, but he realized that not all lume, light sources, etc. are created equal. He found this out while feeding his newborn son at 4:00 A.M. (been there!). His Seiko, while great, wouldnt last that deep into the night. His G-Shock required a button push or flick of the wrist to engage the backlight, not exactly easily done whilst feeding a baby that you want to get back to sleep.
What he has developed is an always on lighting system using a series of LEDs running at extremely low output, hence a battery life of around 3 years. Buzz and Jon get really deep into the challenges of manufacturing enduro-lume, how he got the LEDs to work, how he managed to get the technology into something as small as a watch, and how the design of the watch plays into the form following function ethos of a true tool watch. This is an exciting episode, because what Jon has developed is some very cool technology, much of which is manufactured in the United States, all packed into a watch that is an excellent wear! We really hope you enjoy this episode.
Our apologies for the delay in uploading the episode, but one of us had to learn how to edit as Spangler is in a cabin that ADVERTISED WIFI but did not actually have wifi.
Anyway, our buddy Mike from Fratello sits down with Spence and Buzz to talk about a great number of topics. Of course we had to start with the new FratellOris that was released (and is on Spence's wrist for the episode) as it was inspired by Mike's mod of two watches that Oris released in 2017 and 2018. Mike talks about the process for his original modification, the design of the new watch, and why Fratello really enjoyed working with Oris on this piece.
From there, we talk about the various watch trends we have seen this year, what we liked, and what we were luke warm on. Oris, Omega, Rolex, and Breitling had some killer releases this year, and we hope this can continue.
Lastly, we talked about what 2021 may hold for watch fairs, meetings, releases, and sales. In person, large scale, events might not be a thing for the first half of 2021, but brands seemed to figure out how to release products during 2020, so we hope that once we can all get together again safely it will make for an exciting time!
Oh, and we also talked a little bit about the new Speedmaster, as one does when you have one of the Fratelli on! We are sure you will enjoy this one!
We had the pleasure of chatting with Lauren and Lorenzo from Lorier watches for the second time! Hot off the release of the much anticipated Hyperion they were able to walk us through how busy 2020 was for them from a release perspective, how they decided to revamp the different models, and their goals for 2021.
We had the opportunity to spend some time with their newly released dual crown Hydra II, and the three of us are huge fans of that model. Lauren and Lorenzo walked us through the design process for that model, what made the dual crown case more complex than usual (hint, acrylic) and some of the feedback they have gotten from the watchfam.
We also talk about their early 2020 trip to Hong Kong, and what this year has meant for the micro brand space when it comes to watch releases, prototyping, designing, etc.
Spence and Lauren also gripe about being lefthanded, and the struggle that us lefties go through when it comes to writing, notebooks, three ring binders, and baseball gloves. It is hard to believe that it has been just over 6 months since they were first on our podcast. It will definitely not be that long before these two return!
One of our favorite guests to date comes back for another episode! We are very excited to have a chance to sit down with Jonathan Ferrer from Brew Watches for the second time.
We have the first watch twinning on this episode as both Spence and Jonathan were wearing the burgundy Retromatic. This is very exciting. We also talk about the design process, some of the color iterations that were left on the cutting room floor, why the burgundy colorway doesn't have the yellow seconds hand, and much more. We also talk about Brew Time, the magazine that accompanies the new Retromatic. This adds a personal touch to the story of the design process.
We also really dive into the bracelet for the Retromatic as it really ties the whole watch together. Jonathan talks to us about the design, the structure, and how he had to ensure that the bracelet was thin enough and flexible enough to be comfortable, but also retain its structural integrity. We think he absolutely nailed it.
Of course, we had to talk about the new watch transport vehicle as well. This conversation was fun as we got to talk about modifying cars, watches, and other designs. Sometimes, it is just best to leave the design work to the person who had the original idea.
Once againg, Jonathan does an excellent job of articulating his design process, inspiration, and philosophy. He really has a knack for being able to relate these complex designs to those of us who do not live in this world. That is what makes this conversation so enjoyable, we hope you agree.
The guys (and special returning guest Ryan) sit down with Chase Fancher from Oak&Oscar. We talk about how he goes about designing a watch, what inspires him, and how he names his pieces.
Spence gives a brief review of the O&O Humboldt, which will be fully reviewed on Zeitz in the next week or so!
Chase is really working to not only build a brand (which you can see all of the design evolution on his website!) but also a community. The video series he has produced, the zoom happy hours he has done during the pandemic, and the owners gatherings each year (when there isnt a pandemic) are really fostering a community of enthusiasts for watches and his brand.
We also get into a few cool stories about guests he has had, as well as some of the special pieces he has worked on. The story about the Jackson Flyback chronograph that was specially made for the coach of the US Gold Medal curling team and the process for making the collaboration with Wilson Baseball Gloves are two AMAZING stories that you will definitely appreciate.
We also talk about the latest release, the matte ceramic coated Olmstead. For the first time, the number 6 has made an appearance on a watch of his, and it looks awesome!
This is a fantastic conversation, and we cannot wait to see more from Oak&Oscar!
Spence and Buzz had the pleasure of chatting with SUPERDOC @RJKAMA. We chat about what got him into collecting and he gives one of the more thoughtful answers we have had on the show. All of us are collectors, it just manifests itself in different passions. Currently for those of us listening to the show it is watches.
We also get his opinion, to a degree, on the stainles steel Rolex sport model craze. This part of the conversation takes a fun turn as we all revisit hype items of the past (who doesn't love Beanie Babies!).
RJ is a passionate Seiko and Grand Seiko collector. He recently was able to go on a trip to the Seiko Factory in Japan to see how these beautiful timepieces are created. He was able to share some of the details from that trip, and how it fuels his passion for what they are able to produce.
We then shift to another brand that is near and dear to his heart, Omega. While he has a soft spot for Omega, the conversation centers more around some of their interesting decisions as of late with their core models. He will always have a passion for what they do, but hopes they get back to their brand foundation.
Lastly, we talk a bit about the Movember initiative and mens' health. This is a particular area of focus for him as he says he lives it every day in his clinic. There is a stigma for men of a certain age showing "weakness" by seeking out help for medical and mental issues. As a doctor, his main focus is to raise awareness as to how good prognoses can be for some of these issues that can effect men our age. Testicular cancer in particular, if caught early, has a fantastic prognosis. Also, folks dealing with depression caused by chemical imbalances can be treated. There is no shame in having an underactive thyroid gland, why should any other hormonal imbalance be treated differently. It was an overwhelmingly positive message that a lot of us should heed, especially in a difficult year as 2020 has been.
It was great sitting down with RJ, and the conversation is one we hope you enjoy!
This week's episode features our first guest from the Southern Hemisphere! We had the opportunity to chat with Brett Williams, co-founder of the Albany Watch Company. Brett is located in Cape Town, South Africa but also has connections to Australia. Surfing, Sharks, Snakes, Spiders, its all here!
Chatting with Brett was an absolute pleasure, and the first piece from Albany is truly a stunner. We have had the blue version of the AMA Diver in for review for about a week now, and it is very impressive. Brett has a unique approach to watch design, seeking out "lesser known adventurers." The story of the Ama in Japan is truly unique, and very fitting for a skin diver. We did chat a little about what is to come now that the kickstarter was a big success.
We also chat with Brett about his other passion, acting. Brett is a professional actor with credits to his name such as Black Sails and Raised by Wolves. He told us about how his life as an actor started, and how it prepared him to take a risk by starting Albany Watch Co.
We also got a chance to talk about cars as Brett is a bit of a gear head as well. He is currently restoring a Charger (Aussie spec) as he is a big Mopar guy. It was a blast talking with him, and we cannot wait to see what else is in store for Brett and Albany!
This week it is just Spence and Buzz, and we do have a lot to talk about. Despite trying to bore our listeners by talking about refinancing a mortgage and voting in the election today, there is quite a bit of watch content as there have been several new releases that we have yet to discuss.
We start off with the customary drink/wrist check, and it starts here. Buzz has the Par Weber Coefficient, a piece we have in for review to accompany his Happy Amber. Spence is double wristing again this time with his new Brew Retromatic in burgundy (Brewgundy) and the Albany AMA diver along with his Larceny bourbon. The guys are excited about the pieces, and listeners should look out for some good content over at Zeitzwatches.com and future episodes.
Fresh forum finds return and we pay our respect to Sean Connery who we lost last week. Diving into his time as James Bond and the non-Rolex Submariners he wore on screen.
Spence and Buzz then dive into all the watches we haven't been able to talk about, starting with the Oris Aquis caliber 400. Suffice it to say, we are pretty impressed with what Oris is doing, and this watch is a highlight of their technical chops. We cannot wait to see how the new movement works its way through their lineup, and this is the perfect place to start.
We then discuss the new Formex Reef, which seems to be a mash up of several watches we all know and love, but manages to pull the look off. All of this for a pre-order price under $1,800 with COSC certification makes for a compelling package.
Our friends at Collective Horology have been busy with the folks at H. Moser & Cie. The new Pioneer Center Seconds for Collective is a stunner of a travel watch. The handset with globolight inserts really make this a standout piece along with the green dial and 12 hour bi-directional bezel. The folks who have the opportunity to pick this 75 piece LE will not be disappointed.
Rounding it out, we talk about some other new recent releases including th Doxa Sub 200 Chronograph and the new Breitling Chronomats. Hope everyone enjoys this episode!
For this our 40th episode we take a bit of a Halloween focus with our guest from @redbarcincy, @kidwizzle.
Before getting into our main theme, we take some time to get to know @kidwizzle's background in the hobby, how he takes such great pictures, and a little bit about what is in his collection.
Anyone who remembers "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" on Nickelodeon will be familiar with this format. All of us get into our version of "horological horrors." These run the gamut from Wooden Watches, Diesel Watches, Water Resistance, Setting the Date, etc. The discussion goes in a lot of different directions, and was a lot of fun.
We hope you all stay tuned to the end for the biggest horological horror of the night!
Buzz is back this week, and the guys are talking new releases, new calibers, and a little bit about the new Speedy.
The guys start off with the new Oris Caliber 400, released by Oris last week and up on Zeitz watches for those so inclined. This new engine, as Buzz described it, features a 5 day power reserve, anti-magnetic properties, and a 10 year warranty and service interval. It is quite an accomplishment, and we cannot wait to see what watches it ends up in.
The guys also talk about the new Lorier Hydra II that is in for review. Spence currently has it, but Spangler will be writing the Work Week Watch Wrap. The 38mm case is similar to Spence's new 38mm El Primero, and that is a high compliment. It is very wearable, the dual crowns give it that little something extra (you know, the second crown), and the bracelet is absolutely fantastic.
Another 38mm watch has recently hit the market, and that is the new Astor + Banks Fortitude. Their take on an "officer's watch" the new Fortitude is also 38mm, has a unique looking bracelet, and comes in some neat colorways (namely mint green and mother of pearl). The guys are hopeful they will be able to go hands on with one of these in the future.
We also get into a watch that should be right up Spangler's alley, the new Aquastar Deepstar dive chronograph. A column wheel chronograph for under $3,000 is a screaming deal, and this one checks a lot of boxes.
Lastly, we do get Buzz's take on the new Snoopy Omega Speedmaster as he was not here last week.
There is also a Fresh Forum Find, and all three guys have watches this time!
Buzz has the night off, so Spence and Spangler sit back down with our OG guest, Zach from CincyStrapco and Nereus watches, to talk about his latest project.
Zach gives us the story behind Nereus, a watch brand that will focus on tool watches, and the first model in the brand's history the Santiago. The Santiago is inspired by the Tudor Submariner, specifically the version with the lollipop hour hand. While the watch is an homage to the Tudor, some of the design elements make it more its own watch. The choice between a 12-hour and dive bezel, the roulette date wheel, and the case dimensions (being slightly SLIMMER than the original) are all small details that help complete the package. Zach also runs us through the technical specs, movement choice, and other fine details.
We also get into some of the new watch releases because those of us that know Zach know that he definitely has his own opinions of things. It was a blast having Zach back on the podcast, be sure to check out CincyStrapco and Nereus Watches as pre-orders are open until Friday of this week!
This week the boys are back with their usual banter about watches that have been released (but not the new silver snoopy!) and watches that are new, or newly back to them from modification!
Spangler has made some modifications to his Speedmaster (fitting this is dropping on a Tuesday) that he hinted at in last week's episode. He goes into further detail about the new look of his sapphire sandwich, where he sourced the parts, and how he likes this ruined watch so much more now.
Spence talks about the several new additions to his collection which include the Grand Seiko SBGE249, Zenith El Primero Chronomaster 38mm, and Nodus Retrospect2 with a salmon dial. All three of these watches are getting significant wrist time and each can be a great daily wear.
The guys also talk about some of the new releases that have come out, or are coming to the U.S. instead of just four random Asian markets. There are Oris Opinions, Tudor Talk, Seiko Soliloquies, and a Frank Conversation about Frederique Constant. The Fresh Forum Find also returns with Spence coming so far out of left field he may not even be in the stadium.
Coming to you from an undisclosed location, the one and only Brodinkee! That's right, Spence, Spangler, and Buzz had a chance to shoot the breeze with the Watchfam's favorite memer, and this episode goes to 11!
The guys have been very excited for this one, as I know you all can imagine. Brodinkee talks about his inspiration for the account, how it actually started as his wristshot account, and what it was like to have his wife find out he has a cult following of fellow watch nerds. Bro (for short) also gives us some insight into his creative process, describing how he stays current and seeks his inspiration. Sometimes memes take time, other times, they write themselves. I know he mentioned it in his instagram stories when it happened, but the fact that a certain travel clock DROPPED ON HIS BIRTHDAY is just pure gold.
What is obvious to everyone who follows him is that he truly is a member of the Watchfam. We get into how he got into watch collecting. He talks about his friends who have helped enable this hobby along the way, the podcast they almost started (can you imagine!), and the podcast he suggested a name to (it stuck, and works perfectly!). From his 861 Speedmaster "barn find" to the Pelagos that got away, he is #watchfam through and through, and it was so much fun to get to know the person behind all those memes that hit a little too close to home!
Spence and Buzz had the chance to sit down with Gabe, one of the founding members of Collective Horology.
Gabe and Buzz were introduced by friend of the show Dustin, over a Monta Skyquest that may have been for sale. It was also obvious that Gabe was someone we would definitely want to have on. The two current collaborations done by Collective are stunning. We were able to ask Gabe about the design process, how they approached the Zenith, and how working with Josh Shapiro on the Portfolio piece was different than working with a major brand.
We also got to go deep down the rabbit hole into how Gabe and Asher met Josh and what sparked their idea to do a collaboration with Josh. The story is a good one.
Lastly, we get into what watch in his collection is getting the most wrist-time recently. Like any good watch nerd, Gabe has a great story about what inspired him to pick up his Rolex 16710.
We appreciate Gabe taking the time to chat with us, and we hope you enjoy this as much as we did.
Spence had the opportunity to sit down with Marathon Watch company Executive Mitchell Wein and Martin Cohen, from their marketing area. Marathon is a Canadian watch company that has a manufacturing facility in Switzerland and is a supplier of watches to the US and Canadian militaries and government agencies.
Despite being a close neighbor, the guys had not heard of Marathon Watch Company until Hodinkee's Cole Pennington penned an article about the 36mm Marathon JSAR arctic dial he took on a recent road trip. Upon seeing the watch, we knew we wanted to know more.
Mitchell, the grandson of the founder, was able to fill us in on our knowledge gaps. We talked about the founding of the company, how it got its name, its history of supplying the Canadian military with watches in WWII and beyond, and what watches it supplies to various militaries currently.
We also chatted about the design process when working with a government contract. Marathon organizes their watches based on what use they are for: air, and, and sea. Each is built to a specific purpose, high standards of reliability, and extreme toughness. The toughness tests, even for their clocks, are more extreme than we ever imagined (not sure if a certain travel clock is up to the same standards) and involve a pendulum, a brick wall, and a high rate of speed. The story of their dive watch may also involve winning a government contract over a certain brand that is known for dive watches and may have a crown in their logo...
We really appreciate Mitchell and Martin taking the time to speak with us. You do really get the feel that this family owned company holds themselves to a high standard because of the important role their watches can play in the areas where they see action. Keep an eye out over on Zeitz watches for reviews coming soon!
Rick sits down with Spence and Spangler to talk new releases. All of the new models are available for pre-order, and we talk some more about the inspiration for the Time Hill collection.
We also get a chance to speak with Jordan, the newest member of the Cincinnati Watch Company team (Spangler definitely doesn't count) and the former executive director of the AWCI. We get into a more technical discussion than we usually do about watchmaking, escapements, working on movements you have no experience with, and how Jordan got his start in the profession.
This was an excellent conversation, and we can see how much passion for watchmaking Jordan is bringing to the Cincinnati Watch Company team!
This is pretty straight forward, the guys react to the new releases from Rolex. The new Cermit, the Grover, the additional submariner variants, etc.
Additionally, the biggest surprise was the Oysters Perpetual in all the funky colors and the death of the 39mm OP was also a surprise that came Out of the Blue...
It would be great if the new Lady DateJust 31 was an inside joke at Rolex releasing it in conjunction with the Submariner...
Skydweller on Oysterflex, nice...
Anyway, this is a short one, but it was fun to record. Let's try to make the #rolexgrover a thing!
Sunday, August 30th, and the guys are struggling to find something to talk about...
Just kidding! This is a very Rolex themed episode given the announcement this week that came "Out of the Blue" including specific Fresh Forum Finds related to the brand.
The topic of conversation is what we are thinking Rolex might be releasing tomorrow, what we would love for them to release, and what we know they WON'T be releasing. We also talk about the "leaked" images we have seen on the internet, and how we think everyone will lose their minds if the new Submariner is 41mm. We also debate whether or not the new models could come out in precious metal only or if we will see new ones in stainless as well.
Additionally, we bring back the Defunct Design segment to talk about which watches in the Rolex lineup are possibly no longer there after September 1st.
This was a fun episode to record, and stay tuned for a follow-up to this episode with our take on the newly released Rolex models later this week!
The guys sit down with Nodus Watches co-founder Wes Kwok. After the customary drink and wrist check (Wes brought a strong dring and wrist game!) we found out that the guys from Nodus have known each other for quite a while.
Their first venture, a band, had a good amount of success while they were still in school. Excuse the minor segue into guitars, we think it adds to the conversation! The guys went their separate ways in college, and independently got into watches. This was a pretty cool part of the story. Upon graduation, they met up in LA and decided to start Nodus.
We get a chance to talk bout the new models that are being released (Contrail II, Duality, Retrospect III, and a forthcoming new piece...) and understand some of the inspiration for the design of their pieces.
We had a great time recording this with Wes, and if you want more of Wes and Cullen, be sure to check out their podcast Long Roads! Also, be sure to check out the First Impression and Work Week Watch Wrap on the Retrospect II over on zeitzwatches.com!
Or at least it feels that way. We dive into the new offerings from Monta, Cincinnati Watch Company, and Doxa!
For those of you reading this, there may still be time to snag a new Monta Noble which was released this past Monday (of course). The Noble is their take on a luxury sport watch, with a slim, familiar case design, new handset, two new dial colors, and new markers. The blue dial looks especially interesting and we would love to see this version in person. The watch comes on their new bracelet and features the tool-less micro adjust. All in all this is a solid package for someone looking for an everyday watch.
Our buddy Rick from Cincinnati Watch Company recently did an instagram live video to launch his new Diver Edition (long awaited for me) AND his new version of the Field Watch. But wait, there's more! He is also releasing a new quartz line called his Time Hill Collection, with a new Museum Watch and two other models. If you can't tell, we are all very excited about these new released. Cincinnati Watch Company continues to sponsor charitable work with every release, and still somehow manages to keep all of these pieces very affordable.
Lastly, the gang talks about why none of us own a Doxa yet, and why that will probably change after this release. Doxa is bringing back the Sub 300 in all of its original dimensional glory! This is not to be confused with the modern Sub 300T, which, is a bit confusing. The Sub 300 will be a COSC Chronometer grade ETA 2824-2 with a domed sapphire and the no-deco scale on the bezel. This version is NOT a limited edition like the one in 2017 (new ownership, so some forgiveness from the LE owners, please) and comes in all 6 colorways. The guys do engage in a fairly lively debate on which colorway (or double signed version) they would rock.
This was a lot, but the episode clocked in under 1 hour. Go figure.
Episode 29 is a blast! Spence and Buzz sit down with Mike Stockton, all the way from Frankfurt Germany! Apologies to those who don't speak German (myself included), but Buzz has had some fun with the intro to this episode, flexing his 4 years of German in high school.
We all know Mike from his time at Fratello Watches, where he is a regular contributor. His first article was, of course, about a Speedmaster he had recently purchased. We also discuss his entry into the hobby, some of the watches in his collection (including an interesting story about a Submariner), and some of the new watches he has added. We talk in a fair amount of detail about the new Breitling Superocean '57, the Crepas Megamatic, and the new Ming diver.
These are just some of the highlights in what was a really fun conversation. We cannot thank Mike enough for dealing with the time difference to talk to us, it was a fun conversation, and we can't wait to read his next article on Fratello!
For the second week in a row, one of the guys has added a new watch to the collection! Spangler picked up a Seiko that he has had his eye on for a bit from our friends down at Richter&Phillips. Spence has a special bottle of whiskey for a special occasion, and Buzz is looking to make it three weeks in a row with one of us having a new watch on the wrist, so stay tuned for any updates next week!
The FreshForumFind returns! Each of us has a chronograph for your consideration, and we didn't even plan it that way.
Also, Tudor did a stealth release in a few overseas markets last week, so of course the guys are going to have a bit of Tudor Talk. Size of the watch, dial and bezel style, and why they only release it in certain markets baffles us. We would love to see this in person.
This was a fun chat that is more back to form for us.
This episode is the second in our collector conversation series as we sit down with our Redbar Cincy friend Dustin, a Cincinnati native and avid collector. We chat with Dustin about how he got his start in watches (a juicy fruit watch at around age 6) his first watch (a Tissot) and the watch that got him hooked (an omega seamaster chronograph). We then dive into his passion for independent watchmaking, and the direction his collection has shifted recently. His collection currently includes DeBethune, Sarpaneva, and Gronefeld.
We also talk about how during the pandemic, watches have been a much needed source of joy for the collecting community. How the people in the hobby make sitting at a computer screen talking about tiny mechanical pieces of art we wear to tell the time an enjoyable experience.
Don't worry, we also talk about the Travel Clock, the effects of social media and internet culture on our society, and how in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. Also, we talk cars for a bit too! This is probably our longest episode to date, but it is a really fun conversation which we hope you all enjoy!
Rick from Cincinnati Watch Company returns to talk about the Cincinnati Museum Center, located in the old Union Terminal building. Rick is donating his last remaining Union Terminal watch to the Museum Center in support of their COVID-19 Relief Fund. Anyone donating at least $50 to the fund will be entered for a chance to win the last remaining watch. We also chat with Rick about the pending releases of the Divers Edition and Cincinnatus Field watch. He has a lot of exciting things coming, so be sure to check out his website and Zeitzwatches.com for reviews of his pieces in the near future!
Also, as you can probably tell, this week's episode is themed. Not only is Rick a microbrand owner, but he is a watch nerd through and through. One of the brand's he is most passionate about is Seiko (in all its varieties). We have a bit of a Seiko Soiree discussing all things Seiko, his idea for a 3 watch Grand Seiko collection, and what piece he is eyeing next. We were so excited about this episode, that I forgot to mention i was drinking the Suntory Toki Whisky in honor of the Japanese brand. Additionally, due to some audio issues at the end, we had to edit out a great joke Buzz made. Stay tuned to see if it makes it into another episode!
Episode 25 and this is a big one! The guys sit down with Zach Weiss to discuss the journey that led to what Worn&Wound is today. We talk about what got Zach interested in watches, his design background, watches he has owned and currently owns, and what gave him and co-founder Blake the idea to start writing about watches.
Zach tells us how Worn&Wound was started, what their first days were like, their first watch reviewed, and how they decided to start the Wind Up Watch Fair. We also ask Zach about what watches he wears most, favorite watches at certain price points, and what advice he would give his past self about starting the site knowing what he knows now.
It was great of Zach to take time out of his busy schedule to sit down with three fellow watch nerds and share some more of the Worn&Wound story. This is definitely an episode you won't want to miss!
On this week's episode, our budy Ryan from our group text joins us! We talk the watches we are wearing and the whiskey we are drinking, and maybe a bit about a certian blue watch that was released what seems like forever ago at this point.
But first, Spence and Spangler are both wearing watches on loan from Oris, one of which has a review now up on zeitzwatches.com which you will want to check out.
The guys then get into the blue watches released this week, but the majority of the time is spent on the Tudor Black Bay 58 Navy Blue. Spangler talks about how it compares to his OG BB58, Buzz has also seen it in the metal and was impressed. Ryan offers his take on how it is still a fabulous watch that will sell, and Spence talks about a potential missed opportunity for Tudor with this piece. This was a fun episode, with some minor rants and a lot of Tudor Talk!
This is the one we have been teasing for the last several weeks. The guys had the opportunity to chat with Oris North America CEO, VJ Geronimo. VJ was kind enough to send us the Oris ProPilot X (PPX) and the Oris Divers 65 Chrono (with bronze bezel) to review, and both of those feature in this episode (although the reviews will be up soon on OUR NEW WEBSITE!). In his ten years at the helm of Oris North America, VJ mentioned that the biggest trend in the industry has been the strengthening of the community in recent years. With several websites, blogs, instagram influencers, and of course, podcasts entering the fold. They are one of the few larger Swiss brands that is able to have conversations like this on a regular basis, and we applaud that sense of independence from Oris.
We also talk about the new release that is out today, the Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition, a new version of the Aquis GMT, which you can also read about on Zeitzwatches.com.
From there, the conversation heads towards the independence of Oris as a brand. The two watches we have on loan could not be more different. The Divers 65 line highlights pieces from Oris's past, following the vintage trend of the last several years and is one of the best executions of a vintage feeling modern watch (that BRACELET!). The PPX, with its openworked dial and in-house manual wind movement, showcases what the future could hold for Oris, and VJ hinted briefly that if you like that direction (which we do) we should like some of the other new items that Oris is coming out with this year. The guys also make a few "requests" of dream combinations of Oris watches, some of which are rather interesting.
This was such a fun conversation, and it was excellent to have the opportunity to speak with VJ who could not have been more kind to come on the show. We are ALL looking forward to the day we can all get together at a Redbar meet-up and do this again in person!
The guys have a chat with the husband and wife team, Lauren and Lorenzo, from Lorier Watches. We get into a brief history of how they started Lorier, which led to them quitting their jobs as teachers (World History for Lauren and French and Economics for Lorenzo, both high school) to focus on Lorier full time. We talk about what their idea is of a perfect watch (hint, it involves a famous super spy) and how their designs speak both to collectors, and people who are looking for one watch to wear every day to any occasion. We also help them debunk a myth about their limited edition with Worn & Wound, and talk about what they have coming up. They also ask the guys what their opinion is of dress watches. This was such a fun conversation, and we cannot wait to see what these two come out with next!
This episode is on a different level everyone! The guys sit down with NAABS founder and vintage Rolex collector @moorewatches to talk about how he got into watch collecting, why vintage, why Rolex, and a few other fun stories. We were introduced to @moorewatches via our friend @cincywatchdoc, who has worked on some of the pieces in his collection, including a Speedmaster that was previously owned by someone we all know (hint: he owns a lot of sweaters, among other things). We also talk about how he came to find a "Big Crown" Submariner in a relatively short amount of time with the help of an Indy Car driver, and how a watch was shipped to him by a former LA Clipper. We also discuss NAABS, a group of close knit collectors in North America, who get together once per year to nerd out over vintage watches, everything from Patek to Gallet to Seiko. He also gives the guys some advice for anyone who is considering jumping into the shark infested waters of vintage Rolex. This was a fun conversation with someone who is very down to earth and thoughtful about his collecting hobby, and more than willing to share about it. Also, for anyone interested in reading more about NAABS, check out this article from Fratello!
On this weeks episode, the guys put their own spin on a Fantasy Watch Draft, taking cues from the most popular episode type in watch podcasting, to the most popular type of watch on the market these days. That's right, we are talking Integrated Bracelet Sports Watch Fantasy Draft! This was such a fun episode to record, and should be a fun listen. The guys are also all wearing watches that aren't their own, and each have a #FreshForumFind from eBay!
Spangler has the night off, so Spence and Buzz talk about Spence's new aquisition, the SARX069, better known as the Seiko Presage Turnograph! After talking about the new acquisition, the guys talk about wearability. Spence is wearing his Tudor Black Bay Steel, which has the same case diameter as the Seiko. As one would expect, the two watches wear differently. Spence and Buzz talk about all of the factors that go into how a watch wears, dial size, bezel width, case thickness, bracelet taper, lug to lug measurement, and lug width. This topic comes up a lot (thickness especially recently on 40&20!) among watch enthusiasts, and it is always an interesting discussion.
Spence, Spangler, and Buzz caught up with Brew Watch Company founder Jonathan Ferrer to talk about his watches, what inspires his design, and what might be coming next from Brew! We get into how he started the company, a little bit about his background, but then also what trends we are all seeing in 2020, what colors could be the next big thing, and how interesting it would be to see microbrand watches in the same store as larger and fashion brands. Buzz has been hands on with the Retrograph for over a week, and offers his impressions of the watch in a mini review as part of the wrist check. The last part of the interview turns into a RedBar meet and greet as each of us, including Jonathan talk about what got us into collecting, and Jonathan walks us through part of his collection! This is a fun episode you definitely won't want to miss!
On this week's episode, Spence, Spangler, and Buzz talk watches and things to come for the podcast. The guys are working on some new things, including a youtube channel. Buzz has a watch in ON LOAN! There might be some unboxing videos coming soon, you never know! Unless you follow us on instagram, and then you might know.
Spence has the Moser Pioneer Funky Blue Black in as part of the #PioneerTour. The watch was with a friend of the show before everyone went into lock down mode, so it has found its way on this podcast. The guys talk about their impressions of the watch (the dial is gorgeous), some of the fun things that H. Moser Cie are known for, and how this watch works in a collection.
Lastly, the guys work through a few Fresh Forum Finds, and Buzz brings it home with a Defunct Design! There may even be a Longines Leap and a Bvlgari Beat! Listen to find out!
On this episode, Spence, Spangle, and Buzz chat with Rick from Cincinnati Watch Co. We know Rick from RedBar Cincy (where else) and talk about what got him into watches, what started Cincinnati Watch Co. and some things he has his eye on as a collector. Cincinnati Watch Co. is unique in that each watch line that is developed is partnered with a specific charity. They have partnered with the Cincinnati Museum Center, Tri-State War Birds, and the Free Store Foodbank. The most recent issue, which you can see all over Cincinnati Watch Co and Whiskey&Watches instagram is the Dive Edition, which partners with the Dive Pirates Foundation. This is a fun conversation. Rick is always thinking about new ideas, and we cannot wait to see what he comes out with next. Be sure to check him out at cincinnatiwatch.com and subscribe to his newsletter!
Yes, that is 4 W's and 2 &'s, all in the same title! We know that our listener is all about alliteration! Spence, Spangler, and Buzz cover the watches (or some of them) released over the weekend at the Watches & Wonders virtual trade show. They each pick the watch they think is the coolest, as well as a watch they think they would actually be able to pull off as a daily wear. It is fun to see a ton of new models released, even if none happen to be from Tudor, Rolex, or Patek!
Also, the FreshForumFind returns!
This is really exciting for Spence, Spangler, and Buzz. We get a chance to sit down with Justin from Monta Watches (via videocall of course) to talk about the brand's history, his take on the Baselworld debacle, and a few other things. He lets us know about a few exciting things coming (or already announced on Monday) from Monta, and answers a few of our questions about Monta and Everest. Also, we go into his background as a watch guy. He founded the Redbar St. Louis chapter, was Monta's first customer before joining full-time, and is just an all around fun hang! I think we will have to have him back because this interview was just so much fun!
In this episod, Spence, Spangler, and Buzz talk about the disappointing news: NO NEW PATEK's THIS YEAR! Ha! Actually the discussion centers around the announcement from Rolex/Tudor that there will be no new releases in 2020. Tudor Talk and Rolex Rant ensue. In light of the assurance that there will be no Tudor FOMO, the guys talk about What We're Watching, what watch could be next on the horizon for each of them. It is a fun discussion that includes everything from an Alpha Explorer to a Grand Seiko Quartz, to an Omega Constellation.
Weekly staples of Fresh Forum Find and watch/drink check also make their regularly scheduled appearance.
This week, Spence, Spangler, and Buzz discuss Watches We Would Want (if they would just change one thing!). We hinted at it last week with Zach, but there are several watches which we love, but once we see one minor detail, we can't unsee it. Whether it has to do with the slightly awkward fit of the Hamilton Intramatic Chrono (a fine watch we all love), the thickness of the Omega Seamaster 300 (a classic vintage looking diver that is on our list), or the presence of EIGHT 5s (yes, EIGHT!) on the Rolex AirKing. Obviously, in this discussion we have our Rolex Rant, Omega Opinion, and Hamilton Hootenanny.
We also feature the weekly Fresh Forum Finds and wrist/drink check! Check it out and enjoy!
Spence, Spangler, and Buzz talk with Zach from Cincy Strap Co. We get into how he got into watches, what watches he has had, and what makes up a current portion of his collection. We also talk about Cincy Strap Co., how he started the company, how he got the idea for some of his straps, and some exciting new things coming out. We also talk about another special project he has on his horizon, which looks really cool from the photos we have seen!
There is also the mandatory wrist/drink check, and Spence, Spangler, and Buzz each have a Fresh Forum Find! Zach declares the first ever "winner" as well!
Be sure to check it out.
In this episode, Buzz joins us as we record remotely (we have been doing this since before it was cool!). All three of us have a Fresh Forum Find. We then spend some time on Spangler's Rolex Rant, go into a brief Monta/Microbrand Minute, Spence has a Seiko Second, and Buzz brings it home with some movie watch-spotting!
In this episode, our friend Buzz returns! He poses an interesting question that many of us collectors have probably faced in some form at one point. Spangler reviews as many of the Grand Seiko releases as we have time for, and each of us has a Fresh Forum Find!
In this week’s episode, Spence and Spangler each have a Fresh Forum Find, and talk briefly about Spence’s new acquisition that finally made it Stateside!
They also discuss Seiko’s Strategy if releases in a post cancelled trade show world, and try to talk about all of the Seiko releases they can find information on!
There is some Tudor Talk about Tudor’s timeline for releases, and a Rolex Rant!
Friend of the show, and founding member of the Time Well Spent group chat on our iphones, Buzz, stops by to review his collection and talk about his first RedBar experience!
Spence and Spangler each have a Fresh Forum Find, talk about the Corona Virus effects on Baselworld, and talk a Defunct Design from Spence's hometown.
Shout out to all the fine gentlemen (so far no ladies, let's change that!) who frequent the Redbar Cincy get-togethers! This episode features the Redbar Redux, an overview of the fun stuff Spence saw at the January meet-up. Spangler also has a defunct design with some local appeal.
