"Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability." #harrisonbutker #naturalfamilyplanning #kansascitychiefs #benedictine #taylormarshall #humanaevitae #marquettemethod #Catholicbirthcontrol #mortalsin #venialsin #catholiccatechism The Uncharted Catholic Man is a podcast hosted by two Catholic men, husbands, and fathers. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability."

Craig and Jonah discuss Craig's 4-part process to better intimacy in Catholic marriage, and whether the process even works on non-Catholic marriages. It's no mystery that the Catholic Church has a very traditional and conservative approach to marriage and human sexuality. Craig and Jonah discuss the progress in Craig’s household with the new Natural Family Method, the Marquette Method. They discuss NFP in postpartum situations as cycles eventually return. Craig and his wife have been learning the Marquette method, a natural family planning technique, which they have found successful. They have enjoyed its design for transitioning postpartum. Craig explained the rules of the new cycle and the use of a fertility monitor, stating that there is a 10-day window before the start of the next cycle or the first day that the monitor measures high, whichever comes first. He clarified that low readings are safe, high readings indicate approaching ovulation, and peak readings should be avoided. Craig also discussed the challenges of unpredictable fertility in their 40s and acknowledged the role of patience, perseverance, and motivation in trying to avoid pregnancy. Craig discussed Mrs. uncharted’s perception that he couldn’t hold out for the entire abstinence period. He expressed feeling conflicted about defending his honor and missing opportunities. Craig discussed his experiences with Natural Family Planning (NFP), highlighting how it has improved his marriage. He expressed his fears about his wife's increased involvement and understanding of the PMAS process, but also acknowledged that the increased frequency of intimacy has led to a change in desire for both parties. Craig also shared that he used to hate NFP, but now appreciates the care and support it has brought to his marriage. He emphasized the importance of communication in understanding and addressing the needs of men in a relationship. He highlighted that men's intimacy needs are often overlooked and that communication is crucial for understanding how to help a woman with her mental load. Craig also stressed the importance of fulfilling one's partner's love language and expressed hope that their videos could help change people's perspectives on intimacy. He also mentioned the possibility of involving a woman's perspective in their future content to better resonate with the female audience. Craig and Jonah discuss Craig’s four-part plan for achieving better and more frequent Catholic intimacy in marriage. Step 1: Wife must understand and appreciate appreciate her husband’s “need” for intimacy. 2. Both spouses mutually desire that the man should not take matters into his own hands. 3. The husband must actively and progressively reduce his wife’s mental load, especially with the handling of household chores and childcare. 4. The husband must understand and actively engage in his wife’s love language. These factors are crucial for achieving better and more frequent intimacy in a Catholic family. Craig discussed the importance of understanding and fulfilling his wife's love language, which is quality time. He emphasized the significance of “active listening” and being attentive, even when they are just spending time together. Craig acknowledged that he has been slow to understand this, but has come to realize that this has been a vital missing part of his relationship with his wife for too many years He also shared a recent conversation with his wife about possibly increasing their intimacy during the infertile times of their cycle to motivate him to remain strong during the fertile abstinence times, and discusses her response. 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." Craig and Jonah have a lengthy conversation with a newly-married listener named Josh who recently found the podcast and was upset at some of our video clips. After Josh threatened to call our bishop on account of our content, we invited Josh on the show and he graciously accepted the invitation to defend the faith. This episode is our discussion with Josh about his complaints and criticisms, which led to a respectful and productive discussion on topics such as masturbation, marriage, abstinence, addiction, and even Onan. Be sure to like and comment on this episode and let Josh know you appreciate his open and frank discussion with us. Josh discussed his journey as a Catholic, temporary atheist, and past addictions to certain sins of the flesh. And how he came back to the Church, and is a fervent defender of Catholic teaching. We discuss a lot, including masturbation, wet dreams, Aquinas, oral sex, theology of the body, confession, hell, mercy, intimacy, and communication. Moreover, they should conform their behavior to the objective criteria of morality: When it is a question of harmonizing married love with the responsible transmission of life, the morality of the behavior does not depend on sincere intention and evaluation of motives alone; but it must be determined by objective criteria, criteria drawn from the nature of the person and his acts, criteria that respect the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love; this is possible only if the virtue of married chastity is practiced with sincerity of heart.

Episode 167. From Occam to Galileo, weird dreams to white lies, why do all roads lead back to Onan?Craig and Jonah discuss the challenges and demands of parenting, balancing work and family, and how tough it is to be a good husband and father during the best of times. They discuss how abstinence and less intimacy, which results in PMAS (post marital act syndrome) makes these responsibilities more difficult.Jonah is visited in a dream by Craig, who tells everyone to go to confession if you fall in to solo sin. Frequent confession, whether you struggle with sexual sins of lust, masturbation, or porn or not, is just a good practice for Catholic men and women. A recent YouTube short when “viral” by our meager standards, and led to some very nice discussions and invitations for interviews for people to discuss their stories and lived experiences. https://youtube.com/shorts/qDYSERtJkVU?si=O3YYAwZr-pAVeswBCraig puts on his heretic hat for a moment and engage in some speculative theology as to what God really does and really doesn’t care about when it comes to sexual morality. Occam’s razor: “This philosophical razor advocates that when presented with competing hypotheses about the same prediction, one should prefer the one that requires the fewest assumptions[3] and that this is not meant to be a way of choosing between hypotheses that make different predictions.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razorDoes man and the Church’s past struggles with fitting our experience and observations in to an earth centered universe, bear any resemblance to the seeming complexity of the traditional nothings of man, sex, and concupiscence? Some important and (hopefully) helpful changes are coming to the podcast.1. Full episodes will remain available, in audio, on the audio side (e.g. Spotify, Apple, etc.).2. Full video episodes will be unlisted on the YouTube Channel, and under an unlisted Playlist called the "Unfiltered Catholic Man". If you wish to have access to full video episodes, go to the link tree and email us and put "email list" in the subject line and indicate you want to be added to unfiltered videos.3. We will put out a public, shortened clip on the normal public channel. We may include links to the unlisted videos so you can access without an email list. 4. We're looking for a volunteer to help with the behind the scenes stuff. Basically, helping take the video content and have it saved and uploaded to YouTube and Spotify. Editing not required unless you want to. If you like generating clips, shorts, and reels, we'd love to have some help. This is a volunteer position (for now at least), but Jonah and I are just limited by our time to generate the quality content you want and deserve, and to help this channel reach more people. Email us if you are interested. The Uncharted Catholic Man is a podcast hosted by two Catholic men, husbands, and fathers. Christopher West is the face of the Theology of the Body in most Catholic circles, aside from Pope John Paul II himself (Karol Wojtyła). Craig wrote to Christopher West and asked him two questions. Question 1: What does the Church teach about the morality or licitness of "other acts" (i.e. those acts between a husband and wife that result in climax but don't involve or occur at the time of intercourse. Question 2: Why does the Church teach that, and what is the harm that he believes comes to marriage. Craig and Jonah listen to part of his response, and offer their commentary on what he said and whether and how persuasive it is. What do you think of Christopher West's explanation? Is it persuasive? And is it persuasive only to those who already believe, or is it also persuasive to those who don't already believe what the Catholic Church teaches about birth control, contraception, masturbation, and acts of intimacy between husband and wife. "In his podcast today, Christopher West seemed to contend that the female orgasm is intertwined with procreation because it can assist the female body in drawing the sperm up inside where conception occurs. Does this support the distinction the priest in question is making? It absolutely baffles my mind that these critical questions affecting Catholic married couples do not seem to have a clear and uniform response by the Church." "The research doesn't support that across the board. There is some research that says orgasm can help with conception and some research that says it doesn't help. It's a difficult thing to research in an ethical way so it actually makes sense that we don't have answers. The body is still a mystery and we as humans as an image of God, it actually makes a lot of sense that we don't understand everything about our body because we can never understand everything about God. Philosophizing in this way is part of being human and part of the journey toward God. We'll never have all the answers, but we have more answers than we did in 1930 when castii conuubi came out, and we can thank God for that. But if we frustrate our journey toward God with an insistence on having all the answers, we're going to have a very hard time getting closer to him. Sometimes we have to admit that orgasm is a mystery we don't yet fully understand and we may never understand. What Christopher West was ultimately trying to get to us that there is some merit to simultaneously experiencing orgasm. But it's also not a necessity in a full sexual act. What exactly that merit is, we don't yet fully understand, and that's kind of exciting because it means we can continue to learn and pray and ask God for guidance. Some of the greatest saints came out of times when there was not clarity on big issues of the church. Things like the iconoclast heresy, the skism, etc. I agree wholeheartedly with something Christopher West says a lot that this period of time in our Church will build some incredible saints." #catholicpodcast #unchartedcatholicman #nfp #naturalfamilyplanning #marriage #catholicmarriage #abstinence #theologyofthebody #catechism #catholiccatechism #humanaevitae #contraception #chastity #faithfullness #catholic #intimacy #physicalintimacy #emotionalintimacy #marriage #marriageadvice
Craig reflects on the concept of PMAS and why it is such a strong force for men, and a major source of confusion between husbands and wives. The male sex drive is much less about the urge for the pleasure of the act itself, and more about the healthy balance and peace of mind it creates in the days after intimacy. Craig discusses questions like: Do men need sex, is sex a need, nobody dies from a lack of sex, or do they. It all depends on what we need by need, and what standard we have for our spouses. #catholicpodcast #unchartedcatholicman #nfp #naturalfamilyplanning #marriage #catholicmarriage #abstinence #theologyofthebody #catechism #catholiccatechism #humanaevitae #contraception #chastity #faithfullness #catholic #onanfans #onan #catechism #catechismofcatholicchurch #baltimorecatechism #PMAS #postmaritalactsyndrome #selfmastery #selfmisery #suffering #heaven #hell #sin #mortalsin #confession #concupiscence
Craig and Jonah discuss a concept addressed by Pope Benedict, and the so-called "dark passages" of Scripture, and specifically the Old Testament, and how we should view those passages to the extent they challenge or contradict Catholic doctrine and/or our modern sensibilities. They specifically discuss whether the Story of Onan, the only man to be killed for pulling out, and the ongoing effect that passage has had and continues to have on Catholic understanding and teaching of marriage and sexuality (i.e. onanism). Do we need to evaluate the Story of Onan through this same lens, or are we to view it in the strict sense, and that God was so angered by the idea that Onan would deposit his seed in an unnatural way, that He struck him down? https://bible.usccb.org/bible/genesis/38#:~:text=9Onan%2C%20however%2C%20knew%20that,LORD%20took%20his%20life%20too. #catholicpodcast #unchartedcatholicman #nfp #naturalfamilyplanning #marriage #catholicmarriage #abstinence #theologyofthebody #catechism #catholiccatechism #humanaevitae #contraception #chastity #faithfullness #catholic #onanfans #onan #catechism #catechismofcatholicchurch #baltimorecatechism.

We've talked a lot about how the Church, wives, priests, and others need to distinguish masturbation from porn and masturbation and porn from infidelity or actual affairs. We want to normalize the conversation about husband's struggles with porn or masturbation without normalizing the acts themselves. Catholics marriages struggle under the yokes of these sins. Marriages can be transformed when these matters are discussed, especially when wives understand the struggles their husbands have. But if you are a guy having affairs or engaging in actual acts of infidelity, you need to stop immediately, and get help if you can't. Your wife has every right to be angry and upset and probably divorce you if you don't stop this. The next step is to stop with the porn. While porn and masturbation often go "hand in hand", they are separate, and porn is worse than masturbation and men and women need to treat them differently. You can stop porn, even if you can't immediately stop with the masturbation. Speak with your confessor, and meditate on section 2352 of the Catechism, but you need to get rid of the porn, and seek help if you can't. If you need help with that, please message us and we'll try to help. Catholic marriages can be saved, and even improved, when the couple has a conversation about the husband's masturbation difficulties. This is far less likely if you're still actively using porn. #catholicpodcast #nfp #marriage #naturalfamilyplanning #catholic #recovery #addiction #chastity #faithfullness #communication #concupiscence #confession #catechism #theologyofthebody #mercy #humility #forgiveness #intimacy

Craig: “Perhaps the husband that is asking for a quickie is not trying to be selfish, but is simply trying to remain chaste and not fall in to sin.”Moderator: “This is where self-control is required in remaining out of sin. It's still a sin to use your wife only for sexual pleasure and not prioritizing her pleasure. The husband's job in sex is to give his wife the gift of pleasure and the wife's job is the opposite. Simply using the wife for sexual release in order to "stay out of sin" is still use of a person and is at odds with the dignity of the human person.”Craig: “"This is where self-control is required in remaining out of sin. It's still a sin to use your wife only for sexual pleasure and not prioritizing her pleasure." I wish I could convey the amount of spiritual pain and guilt many Catholic men quietly carry around with them every day, and in and out of the confessional, as they try to faithfully follow all these teachings. It truly feels like an impossible task much of the time. This is the quiet agony of the cross many men, myself in included for man years, carry as we try to navigate Catholic moral theology. I'm very grateful that my beloved wife was willing to embrace this cross and help me carry it.”Moderator: “And Craig on the flip side of that, I wish I could convey the deep pain of women who feel objectified and used within their marriages by the person who is supposed to be sacrificing himself as Christ did for his bride the church. Marriage is made of fallen people. It's never going to be easy. It will get harder and harder as God calls us to greater holiness. We are always called to do the hard work to grow toward grace. And it will be physically and emotionally hard and it may at times feel impossible. Countless saints have said that the path to holiness looks impossible to many, but it is the righteous who lean on Jesus to guide them through what would be impossible for human beings alone, but it is not impossible with God. The "impossible" factor is what separates the saints, we know that NOTHING is impossible with God.”Craig: “"I wish I could convey the deep pain of women who feel objectified and used within their marriages by the person who is supposed to be sacrificing himself as Christ did for his bride the church." I respect this perspective 100%, with one caveat. The key distinction between men and women in these divergent crosses is that, for the man, failure is said to be a mortal sin and warranting eternity in hell. A single act of masturbation, or lusting after his wife when he just craves a sexual release, is potentially a mortal sin that cuts him off from God. Forever. That is what we are told to believe as Catholics. That is what the husband is waging war with every day of his life when it comes to his body and his sexual desires, which seem intent on dragging him to hell if the Church's teachings on this are to be believed. His only respite from this war is intimacy with his wife. Some men turn to masturbation rather than burdening their wives with their bodily needs, especially if they are going to be told they are being selfish if they ask for it more than their wives are willing or able. So a husband finds himself in this battle for his very salvation, as he further adds to it the worry that he is objectifying his wife, which he does not want. And his reward is to be told he's just selfish, and needs to exercise more self control.”#catholicpodcast #catholic #quickies #nfp #naturalfamilyplanning #theologyofthebody #objectify #selfish #salvation #salvation #confession #2352Project

Craig discusses the 3 pillars of Catholic sexual morality that distinguish it from most non-Catholic moral structures, and how that informs the content of this show. The three pillars are 1. Catholics may not use artificial birth control. 2. Catholics may not engage in certain "other acts", such as masturbation, coitus interruptus, etc.. 3. Violations of these teachings is an objectively grave matter, and can be a mortal sin if done with full knowledge and consent. Craig discusses a recurring issue in Catholic moral circles regarding whether it's possible to use Natural Family Planning (NFP) and other fertility awareness methods in a "selfish" or sinful manner. Craig plays clips from two recent episodes that touch on this topic. Others disagree. What do you think?

Craig discusses episode 113 of Charting Toward Intimacy, and specifically the topic of abstinence and whether it can be a "gift" or just a "cross" to Christian/Catholic marriage. Craig discusses how, unlike a lot of thing that are "hard" in life and in marriage, such as raising children, going to work, working out, etc., marital abstinence and chastity during abstinence presents a unique hardship that has potential eternal consequences. For people, especially men, who struggle with sexual sin and temptations, these struggles are often the most difficult during abstinence periods. Understanding the spiritual battles that take place can help couples understand the cross that one or both spouses have to carry when trying to live out faithful Catholic lives and strive for sanctification.
