Most know Chuck, as the first Black skateboarder to grace the cover of Thrasher Magazine back in 1984. Most know him for supplying the anthem to our youth, with McRad "Weakness". A man of many talents, and a pioneer on & off the skateboard. This, is the one you've all waited for.

San Diego skateboarding LEGEND Alphonzo Rawls, grew up just like any other 80’s skate rat. Spent hours with friends at the local curb-cut. That eventually led to meeting new friends, going to the local skateparks & contests, etc. The terrain was limited, the vibes were high and skateboarding was a way of life. Today, we’re gonna talk about those times, and more on the mighty, mighty WCRP on Skateboarding.

The 80’s were filled with some serious heavy hitters. If you’re one of the CULTURE, skateboarding LEGEND Mark Heintzman is a name that stood out amongst those. After crushing every contest in his path. The Ohio native was crowned NSA Street Champion in ‘88, and soon after- took the world by storm. Becoming the first street pro for G&S Skateboards, was no small task. Yet, Mark handled it all with style & grace. One of the top selling skateboards, classic photos & magazine covers.. Mans did it really big. And, he’s here on WCRP today to tell his story.

The willingness, to never give up. To truly believe in yourself, and those around you. Take risks, while most are begging for crumbs to stay afloat. Julio, has done all of the above. And, thats why he’s here 30yrs later- still doing what he loves.

Bill Danforth, is skateboarding in its purest form. Never once cared about the newest fashion, flashy tricks, gimmicks, etc. Just 100%, raw skateboarding. Eye the terrain. Barge at will. Like a true skateboarding veteran, the American Nomad never once forgot where he came from. Why he does it, and why he still loves it. That, ladies & gentleman- IS the culture.

Talking with Ron Chatman- Is one of my crowning achievements, in 25years of multi-media. Such a great, candid moment with one of my childhood hero’s. Father, artist, cognitive thinker.. so many words come to mind, when speaking on the LEGEND. Easily, one of the greatest all-terrain skateboarders- ever. A true national treasure, who should be protected at all costs.

Throughout the years, friends come & go. Some, more memorable than others. Matt Pailes has been a friend, for close to 30years. I’d met Matt, before either of us had even migrated to California as teenagers. Not knowing what the future held, we‘d all eventually link up in SF. Skated everyday. All with the same hopes & dreams.
As time went by, most of those early Northern California friendships fell wayside. Some, no longer with us. Some, became too cool. Some- remained the same. Matt Pailes, has ALWAYS been the same guy since day one: awesome person to be around, absolute charger on a skateboard & one of the funniest people I‘ve had the pleasure of calling a friend.
Tune in, as Matt & I take a trip down memory lane. Starting with his humble beginnings delivering The Salem Newspaper as a kid. Growing up skating Boston, Amesbury & the all the OG, North Shore spots. Being broke teenagers in SF, shooting our first SLAP check-outs. Running from security guards in your 40s. The year was 1993. I remember it like yesterday, seeing Buk skating down 85 South in the Yall So Stupid video. Peep the video, for actual-factual evidence. My man even did a kick flip, and alladat. I wasnt the only one who saw it. It was in heavy rotation on BET, MTV, Video Music Box, etc.. Here’s my question: How can one talk skateboarding, and hip-hop? And, leave this man out of the equation? This gentleman was the first one to mash the cultures together, in a huge arena. Make no mistake about it- Uncle Buk, IS the culture.

When I’d started WCRP. One of the first gentleman that came to mind, was Alyasha Owerka-Moore. I’ve always been fascinated by dude. Quadruple-OG skateboarder, visionary, entrepreneur. So many things come to mind, when speaking on the legend.
I recently got to catch up with Aly, as he spoke candidly about his first skateboard crew growing up. Going to buy his first, new complete from Quadruple-OG, Bruno Musso. Tapping into his creative side, as a kid. Also, the social economics of skateboarding in the 80’s.

When i first started WCRP, my vision was to educate. Plus, deliver the REAL history of skateboarding. Straight from the unsung heroes of skateboarding. One of the first gentlemen that came to mind- Don Hillsman. If you grew up skateboarding in the 80s. Especially, in the South. Don’s story, is that of legend. We hear these rappers who claim “King of the South”. But we all know who the real King is. One of the few skaters that made it to the big leagues, when they weren’t just handing out contracts & pro models. One of the first skateboarders to ever do a 540 on vert. Walked away from one of the biggest companies in skateboarding, over racism. What more really needs to be said? This man, is a national treasure.

We candidly discuss growing up being Black skateboarders, and our family upbringings. Don also shares a hilarious story about blue grass pills & some nosey neighbor.
