Attempting Motherhood: The Aud Way is hosted by Sam, an AuDHD ( autistic + ADHD ) elder millennial mom. Episodes will cover topics pertaining to motherhood, neurodivergence, and the combination of those two and how they intersect. There will be solo episodes as well as episodes with fascinating and fun guests. Remember in this wild ride of motherhood, we’re all attempting to do our best.
The podcast Attempting Motherhood is created by Samantha Johnson. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
This week I'm joined by Steph from Abundant on a Budget.
I cannot even explain how much I learned from this conversation! She talks about budgeting and how to make it realistic - meaning you'll actually stick to it- as a neurodivergent person. She share how you can make money doing side hustles (surveys, user testing, etc) with no experience or huge social media following necessary.
Since Steph is neurodivergent and has lived with chronic illness she's always explored how to do things "differently". We discuss her realisation of being neurodivergent and what lead her to start budgeting and sharing her content.

I'm joined by Megs from Organizing an ADHD Brain
We chat about motherhood and being neurodivergent (of course) and dive into why organizing is about more than making your house "Pinterest perfect".
Megs shares the moment she realized she needed to reevaluate their Christmas plans and traditions, and how she's helping herself and others do it differently this year. She shares how we can plan and get rid of the overwhelm that comes with taking on too much and feeling guilty we can't "do it all".

In this solo pod, Sam talks about the perceptions vs reality we may experience - that may be in part due to internalised ableism, unrealistic expectations, and the lie of modern mothers being able to "do it all"... or a bit of all of those.
There are ACTIONABLE TIPS broken down to help you work through this as well as some "reality checks" to keep in mind for the times your perception is clouding your reality.

I'm joined by Kendra Koch, founder of Divergently a community platform for late diagnosed neurodivergent women.
We start, as always, with Kendra's motherhood story- which, like my own, is so intertwined with her ADHD diagnosis and realisation. She offered amazing insights on the importance of listening to mother's and their intuition as well as the lost aspect of community in mothering.
This was such a wonderful conversation and it felt like a catch up with an old friend - even tough we've only just met. That's the magic that happens when you get two neurodivergent people together.

Everyday Mama: Series
This series consists of chats between Sam and "everyday mamas" sharing their unique and interesting experiences.
Today I'm joined by Regina - a mom who shares her journey of migrating to Australia, discovering her daughter is AuDHD(PDA) and her own late realisation of AuDHD. We go into what the diagnosis process was like for her daughter (and when she realised her own AuDHD) and what supports she has been able to access in the few years since diagnosis. She also shares her daughter's experiences of being a PDA AuDHDer in school and how she advocates for her - including some great tips for fellow parents in Aus.

My guest, Dr. Ceri Cashell, and I get into all things Perimenopause and MHT / HRT today! We open with some Perimenopause Myth Busting and then dive head first into women's hormones and Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT / HRT) - while the hormones we talk about are relative to anyone going through perimenopause, she outlines specifics about what is available in Australia, what is subsidized on the PBS, and what we'll have to pay privately for (spoiler, it's testosterone).
Head to the 24:40 mark to jump into the MHT / HRT breakdown.
Dr. Cashell is one of the co-founders of the new online education platform called Healthy Hormones. It's an Australia specific platform for educating other healthcare professionals and allied health professionals about peri-menopause about menopause and hormone replacement therapy. They are also developing a patient portal side where as patients, we will have access to information where we can learn more about our hormone journey and learn how to advocate for ourselves. Unfortunately she is not taking on new patients, but that is why her Healthy Hormones platform is so fantastic because we can still benefit from her work, even if we can't actually have her as our doctor.

In today's conversation I'm joined by autistic author, producer, journalist, and mother, Clara Törnvall.
We talk about her experience of her late diagnosis, as well as how it has impacted her work and life in general. We also go into her hilarious new book and the unexpected feedback she's received.
This was such a great conversation where we really highlighted how powerful the knowledge of understanding your neurotype can be. She is brilliant, funny, and creative and I hope you enjoy this episode.
Her first book, "The Autist's: Women on the Spectrum" was released last year. It's part memoir, part deep dive into the cultural history of autism, highly recommended. Her second book "The Autist's Guide to the Galaxy: Navigating the World of Normal People". Releases the 30th of July in Australia.

In the second half of the episode I elaborated on perimenopause and the difference between a neurotypical in perimenopause and someone who has made it to perimenopause without knowing they are ADHD.

What does an impulsive haircut have to do with understanding your capacity in motherhood? Listen to find out.
The TLDR version is as we understand and navigate our fluctuating capacity in motherhood it's important that we understand we simply DO NOT have the same capacity we had before becoming a mother. And the capacity changes with each additional child, but also through the month and years for us.
It's something we are going to have to constantly navigate and figure out. Some of us do it with more grace than other, but we're all doing it.

I'm joined once again by the brilliant Dr Lotta Borg Skoglund. She is a Swedish researcher, physician, psychiatrist, and co-founder of LetterLife.
Her book "ADHD Girls to Women: Getting on the Radar" was just released in English. It's available at all major book sellers and via audiobook.
In this episode we talk about hormones through the female life span - from in utero to perimenopause and everything between.
It was a pleasure to have her once again.
LetterLife is a blog, site, and app created by Dr Skoglund and fellow researchers/doctors/clinicians.
I have been using the app for a few months and love that it helps me track my symptoms and helps me develop more self awareness around my cycle and symptom presentations during my cycle.
There is also a fabulous community board, there is information and articles by leading researchers and professionals across the healthcare world, and so so much more - all of which is included with the free version.
The paid version gives you access to past webinars as well as detailed insights and additional tools.

Rose from Unschooling with PDA joined me for a wonderful chat.
We talk about her motherhood story (TW: Intrusive thoughts 6:40-8:20), Leo's diagnosis story, and her own diagnosis story.
She shared what brought them to unschooling / home education and she offered fantastic insight for those that may be curious about going down that path.
There was also a very candid chat about managing your own capacity's as a neurodivergent parent to a neurodivergent child.
Rose has her own podcast, Unschooling with PDA, available on Spotify.

Dr. Amy Joynt has a story similar to so many of us, she made it all the way to her late thirties without knowing she was ADHD. And once it was uncovered she was flooded with emotions.
She took all of those emotions and experiences and created a wonderful self-guided journal to help other late diagnosed ADHD women process their experience.
As I mention in the episode, the journal is part prompts and part memoir. It reads very much like sitting with a friend and having them say "this is my story, now you tell me yours".
It's inviting, thought provoking, and encouraging. Exactly what so many of us late diagnosed folks need when we're trying to navigate the muddy waters post-diagnosis.
"Unique Minds: A Self Guided Journal for Women to Process a Late ADHD Diagnosis" is available through most booksellers, online and in digital format.

Dr Lotta Borg Skoglund is a Swedish researcher, physician, psychiatrist, and co-founder of LetterLife.
Her book "ADHD Girls to Women: Getting on the Radar" was just released in English. It's available at all major book sellers and via audiobook.
In this episode we talk about how women and girls are too often abandoned by their health care providers, diagnosed with ADHD years after their male counterparts, and struggle to find information and support for their many co-morbid conditions.
Dr. Skoglund shares how the healthcare system typically is made up of silos of specialities and it's only once those silos are broken and the different sectors begin to work with each other can real solutions come into play.
We discuss how hormones effect everything - which those of us with a cycle already knew. We address if cyclic dosing might be the answer. How knowing your ADHD type and characteristics can be key in advocating for yourself and treating your ADHD.
LetterLife is a blog, site, and app created by Dr Skoglund and fellow researchers/doctors/clinicians.
I have been using the app for a few months and love that it helps me track my symptoms and helps me develop more self awareness around my cycle and symptom presentations during my cycle.

If you're neurodivergent and don't already follow Tina (aka The ADHD Accountant) I cannot recommend it enough.
As we discuss in the episode, the majority of financial advice out there is "typical". Meant for neurotypical people with neurotypical ways of thinking and spending. When we look at our neurodivergent brains (and especially if you're ADHD) most of that typical advice will not be easy to implement, will not take into account our struggles with executive functioning, or our potential impulsive spending.
Tina gives real, actionable tips in the episode. She gives advice on where to start - hint, it's not as simple as "make a budget" and she dives into her thoughts on children and pocket money/allowance.
If you want more after you've listened to this episode I highly recommend listening to her podcast "The ADHD Money + Finance Podcast". I've listened to all of them and gotten so much great information.

In this episode I talk about resentment and expectations in relationship.
How resentment can take root, what that word may mean for both you and your partner, and so much more.
I also dive into looking at the expectations we place on our partners and how unmet expectations can lead to resentment and even questioning the relationship as a whole. But we shouldn't expect our partners to be all of the things to us. That's impossible.

Pasha Marlowe, MFT, joined me to talk about navigating our romantic relationships as a neurodivergent person. She shares her story of being late realised neurodivergent (AuDHD) and queer and how that impacted her marriage.
We discussed how we can fall into patterns as a couple and need to change things up to see these patterns - sometimes that's with the help of a coach/counsellor/therapist.
She gave tips for how to get on the same page with your partner - both in regards to the relationship and parenting. As well as ways we can bring our partners along on our realisation journey, but at their own pace.

*Trigger Warning: Pregnancy Loss and Fertility Treatment
This is part one of a two part series with Emily.
In this episode ADHD Coach Emily Weinberg tells her very unique motherhood story of having twins, not twins and realising she was ADHD as they were toddlers.
If you're interested to learn more about coaching keep an eye peeled for Part 2 of this episode where we talk about ADHD coaching, how she got into coaching, and how it's different than therapy or counselling.

(Episode 2)
I was joined by Amber Collins, Neurodivergent Amber, to chat about mothering as an autistic - ADHDer. As to be expected when you get two ADHDers together, the conversation bounced all over the place from mothering to advocacy, to gaslighting yourself pre-diagnosis, the pressure of mothering with social media, and so much more.
A special note for those listeners based in England, at 6:00 she highlights how you can go through your health advisor to refer for suspected autism or other concerns, and at 32:00 we talk about the "Right to chose" pathway to get a private but NHS official ADHD diagnosis.
You can follow Amber on the below socials to learn more about her advocacy work and the exciting projects she has coming up!

(Episode 1)
*Trigger warning - suicidal ideations
In this episode I talk about how I first realised I was autistic and ADHD and what my motherhood journey was like that lead to that realisation.
I wanted to give more context as to why this podcast will highlight both motherhood and neurodivergence as the main points. For me the two are so intertwined because becoming a mother made me realise I am neurodivergent.
If you relate to any of this content please know you're not alone and there is a whole wave of people out there who are feeling exactly like you.
