The podcast Wild River is created by Sam Pfotenhauer. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
In this special episode, Sam invites her uncle, Mike Pfotenhauer, founder and head designer of Osprey Packs (until his recent retirement), to discuss the role of creativity in his life and in Osprey Packs.
Osprey Packs is a world class outdoor backpack company headquartered in Cortez, Colorado. It is known for its innovative design, sustainability values, and high quality products. Mike founded Osprey in 1974. Osprey’s backpacks can be found in nearly every country, airport, and trail.
Mike Pfotenhauer is an artist and creative, though he might not use those words to describe himself. He approached his business with an extreme emphasis on creativity and his personal freedom of creative expression.
In this podcast, Mike discusses how creativity allows him to get lost and find the path again, what creativity offers you as a person, the importance of being connected to the material items around you, finding an inner sense of freedom through creativity, balancing business demands and creativity flow, and what self-expression offers you in your life.

In this episode, Sam discusses how essential it is to be honest with yourself and what you want to feel empowered sexually. If you don’t feel comfortable saying “no” to anything or anyone that doesn’t feel right, than you won’t trust your yes either. To feel truly empowered sexually, you need to know how you are feeling and be able to articulate it. Because if you can’t trust yourself to articulate what you want or need, there will be a part of you that always feels on-guard because you won’t know if you are safe. In this episode, Sam also discusses using discernment when selecting partners, navigating people pleasing and disappointment, and how to expand your ability to know what you are feeling.

In this new series, Spirituality 101, Sam explores foundational concepts of spirituality and mysticism. Though this content is great for folks having a spiritual or psychic awakening (whether it be your first or one of many), this series is supportive and engaging for anyone on a spiritual path. Just because it is foundational does not mean it is elementary.
We live in an energy universe. Each of us are made of energy and vibrate at a specific frequency. That internal frequency influences our external reality. Though it is not by any means the only factor influencing our lives, your vibration is something you have control over, and a way to influence and shift your lived experience.
In this episode, Sam explores ways to raise your vibration and increase your magnetism. There are many ways to do this. Sam argues that the most effective ways relate to embodiment, feeling and expressing your spectrum of emotions, and living out of the heart. Connecting sincerely with yourself, your body, and your emotions, and allowing love to flow through you, for yourself and for others, allows you to radically shift and heighten your vibrational frequency.

Transformation is inevitable. It is part of being alive. But there is a special power to stepping into transformation - with choice and surrender - and fully allowing it to take you wherever you need to go next. Transformation asks you to surrender aspects of your identity, life, and sense of self to upgrade to a more authentic version of yourself.
In this episode, Sam interviews Libby Christenson, leadership coach, about transformation. Libby has walked through several transformations in her life - sobriety, career shifts, relationship endings, health crisis, and maturation in her identity - and has gained a lot of wisdom from those experiences. She also professionally supports others in massive transformations.
Sam and Libby discuss:
- How transformation brings up resistance, and the importance of surrendering to the unknown
- How to navigate painful transformations and find ease and joy in them
- The magic that awaits you on the other side of big transformations
- Choosing yourself and authenticity during big life changes
- Developing confidence and a sense of safety despite outer turmoil and instability
- Practical tools for navigating transformation

In this episode, Sam is channeling for the first time on the podcast (at least, channeling in this way). Channeling is a way of connecting with consciousness and intelligent energy outside this earthly realm. We live in an energetic universe, and channeling is a means to communicating and expressing this energy.
In this channeled message, our collective guides share all about the importance of the body as a tool:

Under nearly every reaction - whether it be anger, contraction, avoidance, exploding, or judgment - is another, more vulnerable emotion. When you understand the underlying emotion that is driving your reactions, you have the opportunity to move forward with awareness and support yourself for your entire feelings, rather than react from the wound.
In this episode, Sam explores how to do this. She walks through different examples of reacting, and how to explore what is going on underneath the surface that is contributing to the reaction. She describes the process for this type of inner inquiry and what to do with the information, as well as why it is so valuable to expand your awareness in this way.
*NOTE that Sam does say a few swear words in this episode, in the case that you want to be mindful about who is listening along with you.

In this episode, Sam makes a case to do one of the bravest things a person can do, which is to go after what they really, truly want.
It is extremely brave to let yourself desire things. To acknowledge it to yourself, to voice it, and to take actions to it.
A ton of insecurities can come up. You may feel unworthy of wanting the thing, afraid of failing, nervous about being made fun of or seeming stupid when putting yourself out there, or feeling selfish for wanting more.
Even with these fears, it is worth it. Because your desires - the true, soul-level desires you don’t stop thinking about - are the pathway to your purpose, fulfillment, joy, and authenticity. And when you ignore these desires, not only may you still experience rejection or unworthiness, but you also may feel a deep, painful sense of regret for not giving yourself the chance to have what you really want.
Be brave and go after it.

Welcome back to the Wild River Podcast!
With this episode, Sam is beginning a new series called Human Design In Real Life aka “HD IRL”.
HD IRL is a series where Sam shares her candid and free-flowing thoughts about how various aspects of human design feel in real life.
In todays episode, Sam talk about the open root. What it feels like, what Sam loves about it, and core challenges, especially related to timelines, feeling pressure, and relaxation.
In this series, Sam will share from my personal experience and what I have observed from others with the same qualities through readings and through conversations in Human Design Training.
Her hope is that this series will become a useful resource to explore human design in all the ways it can appear - to translate abstract knowledge to embodied knowing.

It can be really challenging to show up authentically over the holidays, especially with friends or family who may not know about or be accepting of parts of you. Maybe you live a different lifestyle, perhaps others don’t understand your spirituality or what you do for work, maybe you have made a shift in your boundaries and it is difficult for others to respect them.
In this episode, Sam provides guidance and questions to help you gain clarity around what authenticity means to you, why it is important, what is standing in its way, and how to move through that.
While this episode was inspired by the upcoming holidays, it can apply anytime you may be struggling to authentically connect with those around you.

In this two-part series, I am sharing my career story. I share about what led my to law school, what brought me to Big Law in NYC (aka a large, corporate law firm), what it was like to work in a rigorous, fast-paced, sophisticated environment, and what led me to leave to create a whole new career.
I didn’t have the confidence to make this sort of dramatic leap when I started. I needed to develop some mindset shifts and learn about myself and my desires to have the confidence to make. In this episode, I outline those mindset shift and learnings that allowed me to make choose myself, my joy, and my wellbeing, such as:
I have a lot to say (and I share a lot of personal context), so this story will be split in two parts. In Part 2, I will discuss what circumstances prompted me to actually leave, the practical considerations (aka career reputation, money and finance), and what came next.
If you would benefit from support as you are making a career shift, I would love to welcome you into my coaching program, Sunbeam. Consider setting up a connection call to feel into whether we are a good fit.

In this episode, Sam and Nadia Last discuss some of the human design authorities. According to Human Design, each person has an inner authority, which is the specific way that you may aligned decisions and connect with your intuition.
There are 8 authorities in Human Design. We covered the three most common authorities - emotional, sacral, and splenic authorities - in Part 1 (see the last episode). In this episode, we cover the ego-projected and ego-manifested authority, self-projected projectors, mental projectors, and the lunar authority. We also discuss de-conditioning strategies.
We also talk about our Human Design Training, a 14-week comprehensive human design training, led in community, which will begin September 7. You can learn more about that here: https://www.wildriver.live/human-design-training

In this episode, I interview my friend Luna Brooke to discuss the chakra system. Luna explains what the chakra system is and why it is a valuable tool for inner inquiry, reflection, and healing.
In this episode, we especially focus on the lower three chakras: the root, the sacral, and the solar plexus. We discuss how experiences of trauma can impact the root chakra, and how that can manifest in your life, particularly in feeling unsafe in the body, feeling unsafe in the world, feeling the need to rush and hurry, or feeling like you always need to achieve.
Luna is such an incredible resource and has so much to share about the chakra system. If you liked this episode, send us a DM on instagram and tell us about what resonated or caught your attention. We’d love to hear from you!

Connecting with Earth consciousness in meditation has been a very powerful tool for me in cultivating peace and presence in the moment, grounding, managing fear and anxiety, and strengthening my intuition. I created these meditations on the Wild River Podcast (a 30 minute episode, a 16 minute meditation, and a 6 minute meditation) to support you in your every day life, as often as you want.
I learned this meditation style from Rachel Pfotenhauer at Vast Earth. Rachel is an extremely gifted Earth channel, meaning she channels the consciousness and energy of Mother Earth, for readings and healings. I have attended dozens of group healings led by Rachel, where she leads us in a meditation to connect with Earth and then amplifies Earth energy in each of our energetic bodies. These experiences were instrumental in me leaving my job as a full-time lawyer and pursuing a career and lifestyle that felt authentic and expansive to me because Earth helped me to clear fear and connect with my body’s wisdom. I highly recommend her work - particularly her Wednesday healings, her retreats, and her readings.

In this episode, I interview my friend William Igbokwe to explore the aspects of his identity. Will is a lawyer, an actor, a son, a caregiver, a man, and a brother, among many other roles. He is one of the most embodied people I know and lives with intention and purpose. I love talking with him and I received a lot from this episode.
We talk about:
Despite significant hardship at a young age, or perhaps because of it, Will prioritizes joy, expression, and living purposefully. He is a beautiful example of an empowered man living with intention.

As a part of your human design, you have a profile. It is two numbers, separated by a backslash, like a fraction. For example, 4/1, 1/3, 2/5, 4/6, 6/2, etc. Your profile is how you are designed to share your gifts with the world and the role and personality type you are here to express.
There are six different profiles lines (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and each is a different archetype, trait, and role. Your profile is made up of two of these lines.
In this episode, Nadia Last and I explain the meaning behind each profile line, the placement (it matters which number comes first!), and practical tips to lean into your most authentic expression of your profile.

After four months on hiatus from this podcast, I wanted to share an episode right from my heart that didn’t focus on Human Design. While I love human design, it is not everything!
In this episode I share about a transition I have had recently stepping from a learner and observer to a leader and a teacher. Though I genuinely love learning, I also can be motivated out of insecurity or fear. I unpack that and discuss how I am experimenting with integrating, rather than learning, during this season of my life. I share about my interest in returning back to the basic - focusing on connecting with my heart, my body, and Earth, as well as feeling available to life - and changing my relationship with distractions that have kept me from this focus (including human design!). I also describe my three threads for winter, the values I will prioritize over this season: (1) creativity without expectation, (2) presence with body, and (3) inwardness/releasing outer authorities.
Lastly, I end with some personal updates. I got engaged to my partner two weeks ago! I have also had some exciting development in my work both as a lawyer and as a coach. I talk about the impact my co-facilitation of Soul Group this fall had on me.

Sam and Nadia, host of the Current (@nadialast), share a personal conversation about navigating post-pandemic life.
After more than a year of COVID-19 related restrictions in the United States, the country is beginning to re-open. With that comes opportunities to travel and gather, a faster pace of life, and a host of emotions, including anxiety, fear, excitement, optimism, and confusion. Nadia and Sam share about their experiences navigating this energy and how they have stayed grounded during this time.
Sam begins this episode with a grounding meditation to connect with Earth, learned from Rachel Pfotenhauer at Vast Earth (https://vast-earth.com). Then Nadia and Sam discuss the experiences they each had over this year, the emotions that have come up in navigating change, and tools that have helped them move through their emotions and stay grounded.
Join Sam and Nadia for a Grounding New Moon Ceremony and Sharing Circle on Monday, July 12 at 5 pm PT // 8 pm ET. Sign up here: https://www.wildriver.live/workshops.

In this short and sweet episode, Sam shares about her recent move to Vermont from NYC. She also discusses the power of play! Play is a wonderful thing - not only because its fun, but it brings us life force energy that is energizing and exciting. This is a spontaneous episode recorded not long after the inspiration came into Sam's head :)
Also, Sam mentions that her partner is going to Vermont Law School. She mispoke - he is studying at the University of Vermont (and he is not a lawyer).
Episode 3
Another biggie! In the second of a two-part series, Sam (host of the Wild River podcast) shares a story that taught her about the importance of allowing yourself to feel emotions, especially ones that you feel ashamed or undeserving of. Sam shares about a series of sexually disempowering experiences she had in college, nearly a decade ago, and the lasting impact these “normal” experiences had on her expression.
Sam shares about a subtle but persistent feeling of being unsafe and unable to trust sexually, even within an amazing and supportive relationship, and her belief that there was just something wrong with her. She speaks about finally sharing memories of prior non-consensual sexual experiences she had been reluctant to revisit because she didn’t think they were “bad enough” to warrant negative emotions.
Sam discusses the difficulty in accepting emotions for experiences that have been normalized by society and explores the toxic culture of consent and drinking present across college campuses. She also shares about the power in reclaiming expression and pleasure, and her refusal to feel ashamed about these experiences or how she feels about them.

This is a big one! In the first of a two-part series, Sam shares a story that taught her about the importance of feeling your emotions and letting others see and support you. Specifically, Sam talks about a formative experience - a physical assault she experienced in college - and the perspective she has gained from processing this experience.
Sam shares the story around the assault and her inability to process her emotions around it for several years.
She describes the way these unprocessed and deeply suppressed feelings of fear, grief, and shame manifested in intense anxiety, and her refusal to see the connection.
Her moment of clarity at a crystal energy and sound bath healing (she randomly found herself at) where she suddenly understood her need to feel her emotions around this assault and to share this experience with others.
She describes the fear she experienced before sharing this story - the fear of disbelief, of judgment, of blame, of dismissal - and the intense support and love she was met with instead.
Sam describes one of the most profound lessons she has learned in her life: when you let others have the opportunity to see you - really see you in your full expression of who you are - you have the opportunity to receive their support in ways you couldn’t know before. And that support can provide liberation.
By sharing her story, Sam hopes that you can find ways to give yourself grace for whatever your story is and however you may feel about it. Each of us have stories that have brought us pain, and maybe even fear and shame. Whatever you are feeling - your feelings are valid and you have nothing to be ashamed of.
The more we can look at and accept the parts of ourselves we struggle to reconcile, the more we can show up in our lives as our true and unique selves. And that is where the magic happens!

Welcome to the Wild River Podcast! We are so glad that you are here.
In this mini-episode - the first episode of the Wild River podcast (!) - Sam, the host of this podcast, briefly introduces herself and the podcast.
She explains that the purpose of this podcast is to celebrate self-expression and those who put themselves out into the world, as well as explore the things that fracture our self-expression.
Sam describes her intentions for the show and the anticipated format and timing of new episodes.
All of this is fluid! It’ll be fun to see where this show goes and how it evolves.
