Welcome my friends to this inside look with my girl Isabella into her transformation story as a photographer. DM me the word CURIOUS on Instagram @brookebschultz if you want to learn more about Love Soaked.
Isabella shares so much wisdom about what it takes to improve your work, including:
💖 why she doesn’t consider herself to be talented and the mindset that supports her instead
💖 how she saw a difference in her images right away after starting the Love Soaked course but the thing that really made the difference in creating images she and her clients are obsessed with
💖 how she went from a new person in a new place not knowing anyone to fully booked.
If you are even slightly curious about working together, the price for Love Soaked is jumping up by $1k tomorrow night, so DM me the word Curious on IG to get all the details plus some fun before and afters of photograhers who I've had the pleasure of helping through this process.
I've just been so impressed with her imagery and asked her if she’d be willing to share how she went from taking generic pics to having a style her clients come to her specifically for and she was gracious enough to accept and share with you all.
Description:
Setbacks are part of the inextricable set of experiences that make you who you are, and thus make your creative work what it is. We are obsessed with triumph stories, where hard work is the only ingredient required to succeed, but what about the inevitable curveballs life throws along the way? Is the only way to handle them toxic positivity that demands you see how those curveballs were the best thing that every happened to you? There’s another way. In this episode we explore how to think about setbacks in a way that supports your creativity but also connects you to your humanity, and how to alchemize the hardest things into something beautiful.

You know how there can be a storm, or a bunch of clouds, and planes can simply fly above it all? It’s still there, but the clouds take a backseat to where the plane is going. The weather is a consideration, but it’s not the focus—the destination is. ☀️⛅️🌦️ THAT’S what being a visionary means. It means that the wiggly toddlers, kids who don’t wanna listen, dads who don’t want to be there, stressed moms, and EVERYTHING that might arise in a family shoot is simply the weather. Family photogs, this is a WHOLLLEEE new way of approaching your photographs and your business. I can’t wait to share it with you! Comment VISIONARY to join us live for a ❤️🔥special bonus (something I made just for this group to tangibly tap into your inner visionary before every photo shoot that’ll take less than 10 min).

If youre a human listening to podcasts in 2024, you’ve probably done some sort of mindset work. You’re familiar with the idea that your happiness is an inside job, and that no one else can give it to you. You realize that you can rise above your circumstances and write your own story about what everything in your life means, that everything can be viewed from multiple perspectives. You see that some people are blissfully happy with nothing and others are miserable with all the $ in the world; you know that if you don’t believe in yourself no one else will. You know that you’re the key to your own success or failure. and yet:
Sometimes, or a lot of times, you find yourself still being human and not acting in integrity with what you know. You find yourself knowing intellectually one thing, but behaving in another way. Still snapping at the people you love. Still acting in a way that suggests you DO believe someone else can make you happy, still believing that someone else has it more figured out or together than you, still hiding when you’d previously determined to show up for your business or your creativity. What we do at THAT point in the process– the point of ‘I know this but I’m just not doing it’ is crucial.

Tapping into your inner visionary: this is the part of you that sees what other people don’t see. This is the part of you that reads a biography about hamilton and sees hip hop musical. This is where every experience you’ve ever had, good, bad, ugly, stretching, boring, all of it, comes together to alchemize into your vibe, your ethos, your voice, your style and thus, your creative legacy. The body of work you will make that will still be here after you’re gone. And the funny thing about vision is that most of us are blind to our own. We don't see very readily where we are different, unique. And when we have something that feels different our immediate instinct is to hide it BECAUSE it’s different. Or we try to be different on purpose and because we’re carving a new path, we don’t know how to communicate it in a way that makes sense to people. In this episode, we’ll talk about ways to tap into your inner visionary AND ways to enroll other people into the vision so you can get your work brought to life and have it impact the widest group of humans possible.

If you’ve created something and feel it’s not *quite* hitting the mark but aren’t sure exactly why, this technique could be the answer. It’s a metaskill that applies to every medium of creative work, from music to photography to fashion to cooking and more. While I didn’t invent this technique, I had a lot of fun applying it to so many different mediums to inspire you to apply it to what you’re working on.

If you feel like you’ve lost your creativity, there’s nothing wrong with you. There’s an invisible army of people all over the world who have felt the same. 45 minutes of creativity significantly lessens stress in the body, regardless of artistic experience or talent, so when I say it doesnt matter if it’s good, it truly doesnt matter. Creativity is therapy, it is like water to your soul and you need this. Description: I’m so excited to bring you a taste of the portfolio review I did for family photographers in conjunction with Art of Curation. Art of Curation is my course that shows you how to spot your great images in a sea of good images, and now when you get that course you also get the recording of this call included so you can see me reviewing 20+ photog’s work, all different styles- documentary, big families, newborns, maternity, we even had a pet photographer in there.
The call ended up being 3 hrs whoops so this week’s episode is just a few soundbites. If you want the whole thing, go to brookebschultz.com/artofcuration and you’ll be able to watch it on 2x while you edit or break it up into yummy bite size chunks for yourself so you can really interalize the concepts of what makes a strong image technically, and how to put strong images together to tell the most powerful story for potential clients, how to cut your portfolio down from 200 to 30 images, why I passed over specific images, what I’d do to milk just a few images if you have only 5-10 that you’re really proud of in the new style you want to shoot, and of course so much more.
Check it all out at brookebschultz.com/artofcuration and please enjoy these fun sound bites, I know they’re gonna be great takeaways for you in curating your own images.

If you are a multi passionate creator this episode is especially gonna be for you, because it’s an exercise in self trust, in doing it messy, in practical tips of how to get back in your alignment and make what you’re meant to make.
We’re really meant to be in fullest expression of our authentic selves. The rosebushes in my neighborhood are blooming so huge and so glorious, i have to walk by them and smell them every day. And no one is looking at those roses and saying how dare you grow, how dare you bloom so beautifully and so abundantly. All of nature conspires to make the rose bushes bloom that abundantly. The water, the sunlight, even the cold of winter–they are play their part in helping the roses bloom because that's what roses are meant to do. You are meant to be the fullest expression of yourself creatively.
And my guess is that you might be playing small, at some point, in some way, because our human noise sometimes gets in the way, so today’s episode is for cutting through that noise and getting back to your business which is blooming ever more brightly, with all your fragrance, color, and full height.

The only 2 things any photographer needs to make great photos, PERIOD.
My 5 step framework for shooting families with zero burnout + unshakeable confidence
The 3 biggest mistakes photographers make when trying to improve their work
Distinguishing your GREAT images from your good images is a skill that can make or break your photography career.
Potential clients make snap judgments about whether to hire you based on just a few images they see. (that pressure is enough to drive anyone nuts).
But you can learn to spot your best work with confidence to share on social media, your blog/website, and with publications so you can get noticed + work with clients who want the exact art you want to create.
In this section of the class you’ll hear ab why curation matters + how to make it easy, how to decide what to deliver to clients vs. what to trash and how to make peace with that, how to balance consistency with creativity in sharing images on your feed, website and portfolio, and of course a whole lot more, so please message me @heartfulmagazine the word CURATE and i’ll send you this class in its entirety right away.

We’re all products of our environment, experiences, demographics and exposures. We often exist in echo chambers online and in person with others who are similar to us and agree with us, even our algorithms feed us content we’ll likely agree with. How we perceive the world directly affects what kind of art we make. So how do we bust out of our boxes, stop unconsciously copying our heroes and peers and blaze new trails? In this episode we talk through a framework that can be applied to the smallest creative process and the huge creative process of making a creative life.

In this call you’ll meet Brittany, who has been refining what kind of family photographer she wants to be + what type of client she wants to attract. We do a review of her website and while some of the details will be lost since you can’t see the photos, you’re still going to get a ton out of this and it will be like a vicarious review for your own website esp if youre a photog. We talk about whether to repeat images and where to repeat them in a site and pricing guide, how to approach designing a website for max impact for potential clients, how to spot the best testimonials, and lots more.
I want to thank Brittany for letting us share this review w all of you, you can follow her on ig @brittanybekas www.brittanybekas.com for all her beautiful imagery.

The creative process is often painted as eternal bloom; we see only the polished, finished work in carefully curated highlight reels in an endless scroll. But the incubation and quiet that has to accumulate over a seed before the bloom is just as vital to its growth as the vibrant blossoming.
Often, in talking to creators, they say things in winter like, “I’m burnt out”, “I don’t know what I’m doing anymore” “All my photos are crap” or “I’m just not inspired or motivated.” These experiences can feel like a crisis, a shameful problem that requires us to do more and urgently fix, fix, fix.
If you have periods of bleakness, of darkness, there’s nothing wrong with you. We often forget that there is no light without darkness, no bloom without black, rich soil and the bare, gray-brown limbs. Darkness is the contrast that gives light its meaning and magnificence.

Whether you’re a photographer, musician, writer or whatever your creative medium is, this episode is all about the art of storytelling and taking your audience on a journey through your choices.
The order in which you present your work, the juxtaposition you create in your work through the sequence or the sizing or the contrast from one work to the next – let’s talk about curation.

This episode is a continuation of a series of love letters to creatives at different stages of your creative lives.
In today's episode, we'll walk through the place of fear in the creative life, what those fearful thoughts can sound like, what you can think instead, and when to push through fear or listen to it.

If you find yourself starting that creative venture you’re excited about, then dropping it when other things come up or you realize how bad you are, I have two words for you: me too.
This is a letter to the one who keeps stopping and starting. The one with conflicting desires like me, to build an empire and rule the world, and also to lean into the softness of the earth, the squishiness of my heart and my body, and explore the quiet depths of my interior life without anyone else knowing about it.
This love letter is the first of a series of letters speaking to different places you might be on your creative journey. Coming up: The One Who Hasn’t Started Yet, The One Who’s Burnt Out, The One Who is Bored, and more.

The mundane can be flattening, don'tcha think?
I've been thinking about being tired vs. being uninspired, because a lot of times I will go into a creative process and feel tired, and have lots of other things weighing on my mind.
But once I'm there, I feel on fire, and in flow, time and space collapse.
I'm having so much fun, I'm challenged but I'm also up to the challenge. I'm dancing in that magic space between mastery and mystery. In today's episode, we'll explore the tension between creativity and the mundane. When we prioritize inspiration in our lives, we can trust the process a little better and move our creative work forward. Shortening the creative cycle so that we can find a spark and follow it up with action.

Writing is sovereignty. When we wrap language around our experiences, we get juiced with power. So why do we have so much resistance? Should we aim to change the world with our creative work? How can you make a living as an artist without giving yourself over to what other people want? A creative life consists of an array of moving parts, and we can often get lost in the weeds and forget the VERY most important thing in creativity. It’s deceptively simple: do the work. Make the creations. CREATE.
And yet, there are so many ways we mess this up and get it wrong.

Creativity is a sensitive biz to be in. Sometimes we expect too much of ourselves and expect this insane amount of unrealistically fab output and the truth is we are human and also often sensitive as artists and sometimes you just feel off–and yet, it’s not always practical to cancel everything when you feel this way, so what can you do? Walk through with gentle awareness. Today’s meditation will help you do just that.

Every time I ask what you’re struggling with related to your creativity, confidence comes up. But WHY do we need confidence? Sure, it can be helpful, but when it’s elusive, a lot of creators have shame about their lack of confidence- which just creates a bigger downward spiral. When you sign up for a creative life, you’re signing up for a rollercoaster of emotions, but the reward on the other side far outweighs the humiliation, fear, or failure: you get alignment, a sense of contribution and wholeness, a beautiful flow knowing you are giving your gifts away and being used for something greater than yourself. Tune in for stories of unexpected ways to build your confidence and what to focus on instead when you can’t bring yourself to believe in yourself.

The biggest thing that holds creators + artists back: their own toxic expectations of themselves. What would happen if you decided you didn’t need to be more talented, hard working, or in any way different than you are now? In our 200th episode I’m sharing 4 toxic expectations that are keeping you from your best creations yet and how to gently let them go. Let’s explore what happens when you don’t need to be better + you have everything you need to live your dream life–what you create will be better, and even more importantly: way more fun.

6 Hacks for Skyrocketing Creativity (even if you’re super busy): https://brookebschultz.com/get-creating/
Multi passionate creators are some of the most tortured artists I’ve ever met– they never seem to be at peace with what they are doing, because they always have in the back of their minds the other creative lives they want to be living.
They worry that their disparate interests are a hindrance to their success, and they are concerned that if they integrate all their passions into their business or creative practice, they’re gonna confuse people and be too scattered to make any headway in any one niche.
But I propose that multi passionate creators have some of the juiciest world-changing potential, because they are able to integrate different mediums and interests into a narrative that moves people in a way that singular creators can’t. This episode includes a lot of behind the scenes details of my own multi passionate business, how I approach my interests, how I make money from them, which ones I choose to make money from, and how to incorporate all your interests into your business, if you want to. It’s so much closer than you think.

Anytime people buy anything, they’re buying a feeling. Plus, it feels so good to buy and sell feelings, and in this episode I’m sharing 8 feelings people are dying to buy from creators and how to think about your messaging and marketing to speak to these feelings in a way that is fun for you, too. Stop talking about the features and benefits of your creation–no one cares how long the photo shoot is or how many modules are in the course or what paper your work is printed on– start sharing the stories and moments that give your creations a heartbeat.

Wanting to quit happens to every creator. The tricky bit: sometimes it means something, and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes you need to listen to the part of you that’s ready to move on, and sometimes it’s a warning sign that things need to shift just a little bit. Sometimes, you actually *should* quit. Whether you wanna quit every day, every month, or every year, this episode details specific exercises to help you manage it and help you decide whether you should quit + what action to take instead if quitting isn’t the right move (or isn’t possible right away).

We are obsessed with the idea that we should pick one dream or goal as early as possible and stick with it. We believe there will be incremental progress related to our hard work. But so many success stories aren’t like that - they are a million ‘wrong turns’ seemingly unrelated ventures, and then one that explodes, one moment that it all comes together.
In this episode, I walk you through resilience and grit, and the importance of knowing the difference as a creative.

And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Pep talks for 3 listeners: how to have confidence in new ventures + balance creative growth with showing up as a mom (Ep 186)
Takeaways:
1. growing in business + creativity doesn't have to be at odds with showing up as the mom and wife you want to be.
2. you have to believe you can’t afford NOT to pursue your dreams simultaneously with your other pursuits and relationships
3. action creates confidence, not the other way around. You don't need confidence in your abilities, you only need confidence in your own resilience.
4. Take your new big visions to the people on a slower, more specific timeline than you think.
5. the most interesting person in the room is the most interested
6. you can’t predict all the beautiful ways your vulnerability and you going first will snowball!

Family photography has traditionally been the lowest rung on the photography ladder. Not as cool as wedding, fashion, or commercial photography, family photographers have been relegated to little more than button pushers serving the masses.
This reflects the patriarchal structure that runs on the unpaid, unseen labor of parents - especially mothers. Society cannot value what it cannot see.
We rage against this machine by witnessing + spotlighting the holy work of parenthood and family life through art.
I also learned a surprising truth from launching the magazine that I'm sharing in this quick episode! It applies no matter what medium you create in. THANK YOU for being here!
If you work with clients who commission creations from you, this episode is a must listen. Learn how managing expectations is actually doing all of us a disservice, how managing expectations is getting lost in the weeds and what we need to do instead to create true innovation, plus the one assumption to change if you want to be more inspired by your own work while working for clients.
