This podcast chronicles my homesteading journey on 7 acres in Ohio with my husband, chickens, bees and garden. This podcast is meant to be a bridge between nature centered homesteading and the more girly aspects of your life. Some topics discussed on my show are: what it means to be a homesteader, beekeeping, food preservation, self sufficiency, gardening for beginners, planners, backyard chickens, seasonal living, year round gardening, nontoxic homemaking, holistic living, safer skincare, hunting, clean beauty, real food cooking, canning basics, rural living, and living in the Midwest!
The podcast The Girly Homesteader Podcast: NOT the Typical Homestead Show (Gardening/Seasonal Living/Chickens) is created by Laura Millat: Makeup Wearing and Homesteading. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).

Yes, the winter garden! Although not much grew for me, I did learn some major lessons in terms of how to keep things (or not keep things) alive during hard freezes, I learned that you cannot be lazy if you want to overwinter food and a HUGE tactic that makes transplanting cold hardy veggies in the very late winter a lot more doable.
Here's some of the things I mention in today's episode:

Spring is the easiest season for skin when you live in the midwest due to the warming temperatures and increase in humidity, but there still are things to take into consideration as your skin and the weather change. Your skin might be a bit more oily temporarily meaning you might get more acne or need a foamier cleanser. You also might need to swap your moisturizer or sunscreen for something lighter too. I talk about all those details in today's episode but here's the links to the specific products I mention:
SERUMS
Cocokind Postbiotic Acne Serum
Beautycounter Tripeptide Serum
MOISTURIZERS
Beautycounter Adaptive Moisture Lotion
Beautycounter Cocoboost Moisturizer
SUNSCREENS
CLEANSERS
Beautycounter Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm
Today I am talking all about the Aerogarden Hydroponic Indoor Growing System! Please note that I am NOT sponsored by Aerogarden and these are my honest reviews and opinions. I have had 3 of my units since the beginning of December and the other 3 since January. I have used them to grow full size plants and herbs and I have also used the units to start seeds for my outdoor garden. So far I think they are great for seed starting because they take a lot of the guesswork out and have very strong lights.
These are links to the gardens I have:
Harvest Slim (my preferred unit)
Harvest Slim Elite (nice but not necessary, this was a gift)
Harvest (I prefer the "slim" model for more airflow)
And the accessories I have purchased for them:

Today's episode celebrates one year of the podcast and one year of considering myself a homesteader! Today I reflect on the past year about what I learned and what it means to be a homesteader. I talk about how homesteading is about being self reliant, closing loops in the systems that you take part of, and how it's not for everyone, because it's definitely not cheap up front and takes a lot of time, work and trial and error to be efficient and eventually save money. I also talk about how we choose to homestead because we love food and know the difference that local fresh product makes in our cooking.

Today's episode of the podcast is part one of a deep dive into how we built our 4x12 raised beds in our new and expanded garden space for this year. This episode specifically talks about the raised bed portion. The topics I discuss are:
Next week I will talk about how we made the low tunnels over the beds.
We decided to tap some of the maple trees on our property to make maple syrup! It actually worked out really well, so this episode of the podcast talks all about it. We turned about 50 gallons of maple sap into about 1 gallon of syrup, but it was definitely worth it and I am pretty sure we will do it again next year. After listening to this episode, you'll know whether or not it's a self-sufficient activity you'd like to add to your homestead calendar!
Today's episode of the podcast is about my March goals for our homestead. We've had great success keeping our chicken water from freezing solid even in single digit temperatures! In this episode you'll learn about our current set up and how it will be a better choice than a typical chicken water fountain during summer months too. We switched to poultry nipples to make our lives easier but also to improve the health of our chickens. Good chicken keeping starts with making things as easy on yourself as you can, that way even if conditions are nasty, you'll know that your girls are still being taken care of.
Here's links to the products we used to make our current water system:

This episode of the podcast is all about processing deer on your own. Although it is an intimidating process, my husband and I have been doing it for 5 years now and have learned quite a bit along the way. In this episode I talk about why you'd want to process a deer on your own anyway, meat quality, meat processing tools, how to figure out what cuts of meat you'd like, a general step by step process, tips to reduce the "gamey" taste of meat, how to get the best tasting ground venison (that tastes like ground beef) and give you some ideas for some of the cuts that might be sitting at the bottom of your deep freezer.

Hello and welcome to the very first episode of The Girly Homesteader Podcast! My name is Laura and I live on 7 acres in Xenia Ohio with my husband, 10 chickens and 2 beehives. This episode is an introduction of myself and our homestead to you, along with our goals for this year. I definitely did not grow up as a country girl, but I love the life I live now. I do not consider myself an expert in any way, so the first season and first year of this podcast will be documenting our transition into "true" homesteading life. I'll be sharing with you my homesteading experiments, research, successes and failures. This episode is especially helpful for the beginner homesteader, confirming the fact that you do NOT need tons of acres, tons of animals or a picture perfect garden to consider yourself a homesteader. You didn't even need to grow up with the intention to live this life.
