It's one of my favorite stress relieving breaths this week - nadi shoshana, or alternate nostril breath. I use this one almost daily for general stress relief and then extra in times of anxiety or stress. It calms and balances your physical body and your energy body, giving your nervous system a chance to relax and heal.

Spiritual bypassing is the idea that we can use our spiritual practices to avoid doing the hard work of addressing earthly concerns. It can also mean putting on a happy, "good vibes only" persona so that we don't have to experience our hard, painful emotions. It's normal to want to feel better right away, but true growth and self-care only comes from honestly addressing our reality. We'll also talk about the community responsibility we have to one another and why we can't spiritually bypass our way out of injustice.

I am back this week with part two of the episode on energy leaks from your chakras. You don’t need to go back and listen to episode 178 before this one – I’ll do a quick review , but once we’re finished here, you may want to go back and listen to learn about leaks in the upper four chakras. A chakra leak can decrease our power to heal and balance ourselves. Within the chakra system, the Sanskrit word for energy is shakti, and it translates to power, capacity, strength and it means the power, capacity, and strength to do our inner work within each chakra. If we’re leaking energy out of the chakra, we won’t have enough to do what needs to be done there to be balanced. Use this episode to think about whether or not you’re letting your power in a chakra seep out of you and I’ll give you some ways to know if you are, and some ideas on how to stop those leaks if needed so you can focus your energy on healing. Today we’re talking about energy using the definition “our power to do inner work” (a close translation of the Sanskrit word shakti) and how we might be leaking that energy from our chakras. We'll discuss the ways in which we lose energy - our power - through these centers and lose our ability to do inner work there. This is important to be know because if we leak all of our power to do this work, we lose our ability to heal ourselves. You'll learn what an energy leak looks like in each of these four chakras (Crown, Third Eye, Throat, and Heart) as well as how to stop the leaks. We'll also talk about the difference between "blocks" and "leaks," as well as how you can have both at the same time.

Today I’m sharing a breath that stimulates the root chakra. It’s a general “masculine” breath, meaning that it will stimulate all of your masculine energy chakras (more on that in Episode 170!). Today I’ve got the first in a new series I’m working on about spiritual practices that don’t always seem like spiritual practices. Every few weeks, I’ll share on a topic that can expand what we think of as spiritual practices. As the saying goes, we’re spiritual beings having a human experience - everything we do is part of our spiritual development. First up, we’ll start with sexual healing as a spiritual practice. It’s a conversation I had with sex therapist Heather Shannon, where we explore the idea that our sexuality isn't just linked to the sacral chakra, or even the heart chakra. Rather, our entire energy system is affected by our sexual health.

In this episode, we're talking about a method of healing you night not have considered or know much about - psychedelics. Yes, these are generally illegal in the United States, but rest assured we are talking about legal use, or pre-illegal use. Dr. Jahan Khamsehzadeh is an academic, a researcher who studies psilocybin, the compound found in mushrooms and other plants that can have hallucinogenic effects. We’re talking about the history of plant use in indigenous tribes, and the impact these plant medicines may have had on the development of consciousness as we know it. We’ll also get into the current legal research that’s being done all over the world and how psychedelics are being used to treat depression, anxiety, addiction, and even PTSD. In the beginning, it was all energy - there was no divide, no hierarchy, and no labels. And then someone got the idea to divide types and styles of energy into feminine and masculine and it's been downhill ever since. Okay, that might be a bit dramatic, but the elevation of certain human traits over others and the assigning of general traits to individuals based on gender assumptions is not doing the world any favors. Today we'll talk about the origin of the terms, how various energy types show up, and why it's so important to balance "masculine" and "feminine" energy styles in our chakra systems. Let's talk about something awkward today, shall we? It's money. And I know we're not supposed to talk about it, certainly not as people interested in a spiritual path, but the fact is we do need money (or the energetic currency we call money) to survive in the physical world. It's the fourth and final "A" of healing from Dr. Gabor Mate's The Myth of Normal, and it's acceptance. Acceptance is a heart chakra aspect and can refer to accepting all kinds of things - the Self, the Moment, the Past, and more. It isn't about tolerating what we accept, though. It's about having a realtionship with the truth that allows us to be open to change and growth, if we want it.

Can anger be used for healing? In Dr. Mate's book, The Myth of Normal, he says it not only can, but must be. The healing continues this week as we explore Agency, the second of the "As" Dr Gabor Mate offers in his book, The Myth of Normal. Agency is directly related to the Solar Plexus Chakra basic right of being able to act on your own behalf for your highest good. We'll learn how the skill of responding allows us to be sure we're showing up in the world in a way that aligns with our energy and values, as well as how we can have agency even when we don't have control of our circumstances. We'll also revisit boundaries (see episodes 44, 147, and 148 for more) and why a considered "yes," even when it is uncomfortable is authentic and important.

One of the most common questions I get is "how do I start?" We want to start healing, start a spiritual journey, start manifesting, start something. And knowing where to begin can be confusing and overwhelming. Today I want to offer a first step in the healing process, adapted from Dr. Gabor Mate's work in his book, The Myth of Normal (if you haven't read it, I can't recommend it highly enough). If you've ever been interested in manifesting, you've probably heard that positive thinking is the only way to go, and if you don't get what you want, it's your fault. Today we'll talk about how that's not even close to the truth. Negative thinking is normal and natural and unavoidable - so we just need to learn to use it to our advantage! When you understand WHY negative thoughts are showing up, you can start to use them to enhance your creation process. "Positive thinking" every minute of every day isn't realistic for most of us, but it doesn't need to hinder our efforts to create the life we want to live, both inside and out.

How do you feel today? And how do you feel about feeling that way? It's an Inception-style question that seems like it could go on forever - a phenomenon known as "meta-emotions." In the Chakra world, it's when we take our emotions out of our bodies, out of our Sacral Chakras, and let our heads and Third Eye Chakras get involved. Sometimes that's okay - even good! - because we get to act as a witness to our thoughts and emotions, giving us a little space and preventing overwhelm. However, other times we simply add to our discomort by telling ourselves stories about what our emotions mean, or should mean. Today we'll talk about how these meta-emotions develop, how they can bring unnecessary suffering into our lives, and what we can do about them (not how to get rid of them, since they're a part of the human experience!).

It's holiday time...again. And whether you love or hate the holidays, they tend to cause a lot of stress for a lot of reasons. Today's episode is a replay of part of a 2020 talk I did on manifesting a holiday experience, starting at the Crown Chakra and going down to the Root Chakra. It's not to create a perfect evening or event, rather to help you create space in yourself for ALL your feelings, accepting the reality of life, and then energetically shifting that reality towards something that will be more positive for you.

This week is part two of my interview with Jen Moore, and empath and author who helps other empaths understand themselves and how to deal with the world. Last week we talked about what exactly an empath is, the unique challenges of existing in the world while feeling others emotions as your own, and why we can all benefit from moving towards empathy whether we identify as an empath or not, and today we’re talking about boundaries. This is another word, like empath, that gets used a lot, but we don’t always know what it means. Jen takes us through how to set boundaries that are useful and flexible and grow with us, and also how to avoid violating other people's boundaries in an attempt to make ourselves feel better, especially if you’re an empath. I do want to let you know that we briefly discuss eating disorders and suicide, so please take care when listening if these are triggering for you.

Empath - the word gets thrown around a lot, but what does it actually mean? Do empaths even exist? It's time to talk about the final stress response of the series - the Fawn Response. In the fawn response, we’re trying to diffuse a dangerous situation, but not in a way that is helpful to us. It's one of the least studied responses, but one that I think a lot of us use and will recognize. When we fawn, we're trying to placate our aggressor at the expense of our own mental and emotional health. It can look like being overly agreeable, people pleasing, or even abandoning our authentic Self - things that fall squarely within the realm of the Sacral Chakra. We'll talk about ways to keep the sacral Chakra balanced, and mindful use of the fawn response to create and keep our emotional boundaries, while making space for our true, authentic self to grow and express.

It's time to talk about the Freeze Response - the Throat Chakra's reaction to stress. Freeze isn’t complicated. We’re faced with a threat and we freeze. Physically we take no action. We don’t say anything. It’s as if our bodies have shut down, that any message from the brain that we’re in danger and might do something about it never gets translated to the body. We start to take up less energetic space, maybe even physical space, our heart rates slow, and we start to feel detached, like we’re not even there. Or you may experience sudden exhaustion or feeling of heaviness. If any of this sounds like how you respond to stress, this episode will help you understand yourself a little better and give you some tools to help get you back into your body and situation when freezing isn't a useful response.

Today we're talking about the Flight response to stress! This is a very common response and can show itself as avoiding, distracting, and procrastinating. We'll learn about how this response might be useful when confronted with a physical danger, but how the emotional and mental dangers that we most often encounter in our modern lives can't be run from.
This stress response is based in fear and lives in the Root Chakra. When we're unbalanced here or chronically stressed, the blocks that we experience could even be holding us back from owning our true self and living authentically. We'll discuss two ways to help reduce our stress perception - facing and grounding - and why it's so important that we do so as soon as possible (no procrastinating!)

Today we’re talking about the sympathetic nervous system stress response. You might have heard this called fight or flight, to which we'll add freeze and fawn in the upcoming weeks. We'll talk about all of these stress responses - why they happen, why they’re great (and not so great), as well as which chakras might be imbalanced by them if we’re in a constant state of stress arousal. And I’ll give you some techniques to help soothe the stress response and rebalance the chakra.
First up is our Fight response, a solar plexus chakra imbalance, and it doesn't just include physical combat. The fight response can include harsh words, sarcastic comments, and more. We'll learn why this almost never makes us feel better long term, the hormones and energy imbalances responsible for returning our bodies to a calmer state, and some "in the moment" techniques to disperse the fight instinct.

I'm finally answering my most asked question - how can I do chakra work with my child? As someone who is absolutely not an expert on parenting or child development, I hesitated to answer this until I realized that the parent/child relationship is just that - a relationship. And all relationships benefit from us doing our energetic work. I'll go over some broad ideas for how to introduce energy work to your children, as well as touch on a few specific chakras and how they're impacting by our pasts and our current parenting styles.
And if you don't have children, don't worry - these concepts can help strengthen any relationship by deepening our understanding of ourselves and humanity.

How many of us are holding on to old stories, old thoughts, old feelings that are holding us back in the present moment? My guess is almost all of us! In the Full and Waning Moon episodes, I mentioned using rituals to let go of those things and in today's episode I elaborate on what those might be. We'll talk about how you can use elements, color, writing, nature, and a variety of other things to create your own ritual for letting go. This is the time when the moon starts to grow dark in the sky and we have the opportunity to reflect on the work we've done and begin to draw inward towards rest. Today we're talking about everyone's favorite part of the lunar cycle - the Full Moon! As we touch on this magical time, you'll learn about how you can use the Sacral, Heart, and Throat chakras for relationship building, manifesting, and letting go of some pain and finding more self-compassion. Today we’re discussing the second basic phase of the lunar cycle, the waxing moon. This process of the moon appearing to get fuller in the sky takes place on days about 4-12 of the cycle. It's seasonal association is Spring, a time of new life, growth, and creation.
The associated chakras here are the root, sacral, and solar plexus, the lower chakras responsible for drawing the upper energy of the New Moon down into the physical plane and manifesting your ideas. We'll also continue the discussion of working with the natural rhythms of the earth and how to stay balanced throughout each lunar cycle.

Today we're talking about Pranayama, the fourth limb of the eight-limbed Ashtanga Yoga system. Pranayama translates to breath control, and it truly is a superpower that you can carry with you everywhere to reduce stress, calm your nervous system, and clear your chakra energy system. The research showing the physical benefits of proper breathing is unquestioned and the ancient sages created a variety of techniques for us to use to access all of them, as well as the mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of breath mastery.
I'll go over three specific types of pranayama: the foundational yogic breath, Dirga Pranayama (three part, or complete breath), and Sama Vritti Pranayama (equal breath), giving you directions and opportunity to practice so you can feel the changes in your body. We're exploring the concept of Self-Care today and why it might not be exactly what we've been told it is. Society would like us to believe that self-care can be purchased in the form of wine, fancy candles, and chocolate, and that it should be 100% feel good all the time. The truth is, though, that if we want to truly care for our mental, emotional, physical, and yes, spiritual health, self-care is a lot more involved and (at times) uncomfortable than that. But that's where the true change lies, the self-care that creates long-term peace and happiness. I hope this series has helped you identify what’s important in your life and given you some ideas on how to prioritize it. When we make a list of the things that matter, and a list of how we spend our time each day, values help us ensure that the majority of our time is spent supporting the important things. As we get closer to that and closer to living our truth, the better life is. We become more whole, more in alignment with ourselves and the universe. It's the second to last episode in our Chakra Values series and we're taking a look at the principles that live in the third eye chakra - intuition, wisdom, and growth. I'll also take a moment to discuss why I choose to associate personal values with each chakra. They can certainly be used apart from the chakra system but since we're using it as a framework to determine where we feel good and where we don’t, and do the deep work of determining who we want to be as humans, who have struggles and joys and want to live truthfully and authentically, it only makes sense to blend the two.
I'll share with you my second most important personal value and how I came to it - how it chose me, rather than the other way around, and why. Value work, especially when combined with chakra work, is when my life started changing in a positive direction that I could see and feel.

When we know what is important to us, we can build that life by focus on specific chakra work because we know what decisions we want to make, the choices that lead us closer to our highest self. The other thing this work does is let us know where we’re struggling. If we have a vague sense of discontent, general unhappiness, we might be able to identify the source of it if we learn to recognize what missing in our lives. Value studies can help us get specific on our energy centers that need attention to help us feel balanced.
Today we center our efforts on communication, self-expression (and the difference between them), and co-creation (how it differs from manifesting). The throat chakra is a vital energy center for finding and allowing our authentic selves to exist fully in the world.

Our lives are a reflection of what we value, whether we like it or not, each moment is a culmination of the choices we’ve made. Finding just three values that live in the Heart Chakra proved too difficult, so I've split this one up into two parts. After a break for the US holiday, we're back with the third in our Chakra Values series. We’re trying to identify what is the most important to us and then spend most of our energy there, finding what gets us closer to what we value, gets us closer to our truest nature. And even though we’re going through three or four values or ideals for each chakra, leaving us with well over 20 things to consider, not all of them can be the most important. What we’re trying to do is figure out the top one, two, MAYBE three, and focus there.
This week we’re at the solar plexus chakra. It governs self-will, self-empowerment, and is the part of us that takes action. We'll be focusing on self-respect, achievement, and personal fulfillment. I'll share some of my personal struggles here and how we can determine if we're really acting on our truth or if we're allowing society or other people in our lives push us away from it.

What is a value and why is it so important that we talk about them right now? They’re a lens, a filter to use when you’re making choices. Does this choice contribute to my values, or does it not? When you look at what is in your life right now, you can see what you value. The good news is we can select our values, we can explore our values and then make a choice to live into them. A good way to start is by selecting a single value, maybe one for each chakra, maybe one that you’ll work on each week of this series, and consciously use it as a filter for your decisions. And notice if you’re moving closer to embodying that value or farther away from it.

When we’re setting goals or trying to figure out what we want to be when we grow up, one of the first things I’ve always been asked to do is define my personal values, but I never really understood how to limit what I value, or clarify what I value. But recently I’ve been thinking about values as they relate to our chakras and when we understand what the chakras contain, and where we are in our lives and what we need, it’s easier for me to understand what my values are. Chakra work can help create the framework to understand and articulate what is most important, and how to align how we’re living with what we say is the most important to us. Generally, humans are most at peace, happiest, when what they say and do is in alignment with the things that matter most to them.
We'll start today with the Root Chakra. We’ll talk about what it holds, what values live there, and how to find movement toward balance in the energy center through the choices we make in life.

Today is the final episode about planetary connections to the chakras – the third eye and crown chakras, the two uppermost chakras in our common 7 chakra chain. The upper chakras tend to have more than one planet that’s associated with them, and that holds true for these last two as well. The Third Eye Chakra is closely associated with Jupiter, a planet of luck, good fortune, and possibilities. It is also said to be connected to Saturn, and we'll discuss that, too. The Crown Chakra is associated with the Moon (not technically a planet, but a celetial body), intuition, feminine energy, and the Divine. It is also said to be affected by Saturn and Jupiter! We'll talk about why we have multiple planet associations and finding the connections that work best for each of us.

The third and final pairing in the Celtic Chakra system - the Crown and Root Chakras - is the subject of today's episode! Representing your connection to both the earth and universe, the past and future, the physical and spiritual, we'll explore what this ancient system calls the Path of Life. This is the pair responsible for health and vitality, not just physical health, but emotional, mental, and spiritual health as well. Importantly, this pair shows us that connection to the divine, to ourselves, and to others is how we fully experience this life. This connection is inescapable, yet a healthy root/crown pairing lets us hold on the the love and the lesson while letting go of any pain we may have from previous chakra trauma.

Our conversation today has us addressing the first of three pairs of chakras - the Heart and Solar Plexus Chakras. We've reached the Crown Chakra in our first series of 2022! The crown chakra is the least physical of the seven main chakras, so I know it can feel less important. However, I encourage you to spend at least a little time on it since it really does impact all the other energy centers and how we experience the physical world. Today we talk about what the ego is, why we need it, and what it really means to transcend, surrender, or quiet the ego. The ego is the collection of traits that make up our personalities, and the goal isn't to get rid of those traits, it's to see how and why they fit into the larger picture and to understand what it means to be present in the physical and spiritual planes while not being overly attached to either one. It's a big episode with a lot of ideas!

It's the fifth and final niyama - ishvara pranidhana. The translation is "surrender to god," and today we'll explore how we can navigate the seemingly negative connotations of the word "surrender" and the sometimes tricky concept of a western god. In the end, this niyama asks us to trust that we are part of a larger consciousness and that we are always where we need to be for the next step on our path. Surrendering is learning how to give away the things that are causing us unnecessary suffering, not giving up on our ideals and values. The practice of Ishvara Pranidhana is the art of going with the flow, without letting the flow overtake us.

Continuing our studies of the niyamas (guidelines for internal work) we really start to dig deep into what it means to reflect on ourselves and our connection to the world and to the universe. The fourth niyama is svadhyaya - self-study - and it's here that the work can start to get really interesting and, at times, really intense. What would it mean to take a deep, honest look at who you are? At your thoughts, at your stories, at what might be holding you back from where you want to be? We'll talk about cultivating the witness and learning to more objectively look at our emotions and responses in life. Remember, you are worth the effort it takes to follow the unique path toward your highest self!

The third niyama on this inner journey is tapas - heat. The kind of heat that changes us and transforms us into the highest versions of ourselves, even when it is sometimes a little painful. Tapas is part of the Ashtanga Yoga system, an eight-limbed path that leads us toward spiritual growth, and this niyama is all about practices we can include in our lives that burn away the things that aren't working anymore. That might be old ideas, poor physical health, or simple mind clutter. Tapas are the tools that we use to clear away debris to create the space we need to grow!

It's time for the second niyama - santosha. Santosha is the practice of living contentedly, with a sense of inner peace. It doesn't mean that we can't ever change or grow or improve, only that we have the opportunity to act from a strong, measured center. Santosha allows us to feel secure moving through an insecure world. We'll talk about some of the biggest obstacles to contentment and some practices we can develop that can lead us closer to peace.

Today we begin our series on the niyamas. If the yamas are ethical guidelines on how to interact with the world, the niyamas are ethical guidelines with a more internal focus. The first is Saucha, which translates to purity, or cleanliness. Of course, we recognize the importance of keeping our physical bodies clean, and we'll also look at how this practice relates to inside our bodies, as well as emotional and mental "cleaning house." Practicing purity of body and mind creates space for us to grow and explore a spiritual path and expand our consciousness without being weighed down by poor health or emotional ties that aren't serving us any longer.
And for the record - purity isn't some sort of moral code here! We're just talking about how a healthy, balanced mind and body prepares us for an aware, awake soul.

Today we explore the fifth and final yama - aparigraha. The translation is non-possessiveness, or non-clinging, which in the chakra system we might experience as the act of letting go. In the Buddhist traditions, it's often said that clinging or grasping is the cause of unnecessary suffering and it is only when we learn to let go that we can find peace. Aparigraha, in the Ashtanga Yoga tradition, invites us to incorporate that practice into our lives every day to help us find our true nature, or highest self. We'll take a look at what this practice means and might look like in modern life, why it's so difficult to do, and how we might be clinging to things without even realizing it.

It's the question I get most - how do I know if I have a block in my chakras? And then the follow up: how do I get rid of it? When energy isn't flowing freely through our energetic channels, we don't feel quite right. Like something is off. And generally, that means we need to release some of the low vibrations in our energy centers.

While there are some foods here that are good for nourishment, these uppermost chakras are more energetically minded so we focus on how foods affect our bodies and even the possibility that eating NO food for a while might be helpful!

The Solar Plexus Chakra
Located a few inches above your navel, the solar plexus chakra is associated with the color yellow and the fire element. Physically, it is the chakra of digestion and gut health, and energetically, it regulates personal power. Emotions affect the digestive system, just like food, so we always want to me mindful of both physical and energetic resolutions to stomach discomfort. The solar plexus chakra may need to be energized or calm down depending on what you are experiencing, so I will share with you which foods can give you the results you need here, as well as the nutritional value they hold.

Victor Briere, A.D., and I discuss what Ayurveda is about, its application to health and wellness, and its connection to chakras. To perform spiritual practices in yoga efficiently, one has to have a healthy body. As a holistic science, Ayurveda treats the body and the mind as a whole. In this episode, Victor sheds some light on how Ayurveda can help improve overall health.
Ayurveda Explained
While yoga is about finding life’s spiritual aspects, Ayurveda is a holistic science that promotes good health and balance. Its approach is more on treating every part of the body by acknowledging that it is connected as a whole at the core. It attempts to treat a disease at the roots itself. Ayurveda also focuses more on staying healthy to avoid getting illnesses and maintaining balance according to one’s body, mind, and spirit. Victor recommends that Ayurveda should be practiced alongside yoga to achieve overall wellness. Yoga practices require focus, and if you’re not healthy, it would be a challenge to meditate, chant, and breathe. Ayurveda ensures a healthy body, increasing the benefits of yoga towards finding balance within.
Stress is the most common cause of imbalance, according to Victor. The body has the ability to handle stress, but too much stress is where the problem lies. External conditions also contribute to imbalance. When these build up little by little, the body gets weaker, and if it goes too far, that is when illness comes in. Ayurveda exists to provide solutions for this problem, restore balance in the body and keep the body healthy.
The Concept of Doshas
Doshas are the primary biological forces in all of nature. Primary patterns in nature reflect in the human body, and these control the functions of the body. There are three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata is concerned with all movement in the body from the nervous system down to the digestive system. Pitta controls breaking down substances like the metabolic process, and Kapha is about growth in the body. The harmony between these Doshas creates balance in the body, and each person differs in their concentration of Doshas. It is an Ayurvedic professional’s job to assess a person’s Doshas and provide ways to keep them balanced.
